¤[Theme music]¤ 00:00:09.94\00:00:17.28 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:19.48\00:00:20.92 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:20.95\00:00:21.98 Thanks for joining me in Zimbabwe, Africa. 00:00:22.02\00:00:25.42 And today you're not only joining me, 00:00:25.45\00:00:27.52 but the presenters from It Is Written Canada, Chris Holland, 00:00:27.56\00:00:31.13 and It Is Written Oceania, Gary Kent. 00:00:31.16\00:00:33.70 Gentlemen, thanks for joining me today. 00:00:33.73\00:00:35.00 >>Chris Holland: Glad to be here, John. 00:00:35.03\00:00:36.10 >>Gary Kent: Pleasure to be here. 00:00:36.13\00:00:37.33 >>John: I think this is the first time we've done anything 00:00:37.37\00:00:38.40 quite like this. 00:00:38.43\00:00:39.00 >>Chris: I think it is. 00:00:39.03\00:00:39.97 >>John: So, so thanks for making a little 00:00:40.00\00:00:41.44 It Is Written history today. 00:00:41.47\00:00:42.57 >>Chris: Yes. 00:00:42.60\00:00:43.44 >>John: Now, we're here for a purpose. 00:00:43.47\00:00:44.71 We want to open up the Bible together and, uh, 00:00:44.74\00:00:47.54 discuss one of the great chapters of the Bible. 00:00:47.58\00:00:49.98 Now, before we do that, the reason that we're in Zimbabwe 00:00:50.01\00:00:53.38 and not the United States or Australia or Canada 00:00:53.42\00:00:55.78 is because we've been here conducting Bible meetings 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.79 in the city of Gweru. 00:00:57.82\00:00:58.89 It's been a blessing, hasn't it? 00:00:58.92\00:00:59.85 >>Chris: It has been a tremendous blessing. 00:00:59.89\00:01:01.16 >>Gary: What a privilege. 00:01:01.19\00:01:02.32 >>John: Yeah, fantastic. But while we're here, 00:01:02.36\00:01:03.99 we'll open up the Bible, and we'll discuss a subject 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.39 that I think's going to be a real blessing. 00:01:06.43\00:01:07.73 >>Chris: That sounds great. 00:01:07.76\00:01:08.56 >>John: Great chapters of the Bible. 00:01:08.60\00:01:10.27 Let's start with Matthew chapter 5, 00:01:10.30\00:01:12.53 where we find the Beatitudes. 00:01:12.57\00:01:14.84 Matthew chapter 5 and verse 7. How about reading that for us? 00:01:14.87\00:01:19.11 >>Gary: "Blessed are the merciful, 00:01:19.14\00:01:20.98 for they will be shown mercy." 00:01:21.01\00:01:22.78 >>John: Okay. How do we apply that to contemporary life today? 00:01:22.81\00:01:26.72 >>Gary: It's, it's interesting, John, 00:01:26.75\00:01:28.48 because here we are reminded of the reaping and sowing, 00:01:28.52\00:01:34.46 or sowing and reaping concept, that, uh, Jesus speaks about. 00:01:34.49\00:01:40.30 We're also reminded here that those who show mercy 00:01:40.33\00:01:44.73 will receive mercy. 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.80 And I think that the, the, this is also true that those 00:01:46.84\00:01:50.77 who know mercy will show mercy. 00:01:50.81\00:01:55.11 Those who've experienced forgiveness, mercy, compassion 00:01:55.14\00:01:59.11 in their life will be those who will share that with others. 00:01:59.15\00:02:02.98 >>John: Now, what we see here is that mercy 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.22 is, is obviously highly prized in the eyes of Jesus. 00:02:06.25\00:02:10.56 But mercy, or being merciful, is a characteristic of God Himself. 00:02:10.59\00:02:14.46 The Lord God, merciful and gracious. 00:02:14.50\00:02:18.17 So in the Beatitudes Jesus is saying, 00:02:18.20\00:02:20.37 "Here's how to live," saying, "Here's how to be." 00:02:20.40\00:02:22.70 I think what He's saying is not "Go do this," 00:02:22.74\00:02:24.67 but, "This is what will happen when the presence 00:02:24.71\00:02:28.14 of the Holy Spirit is in your life." 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.08 God's plan is to remake us in His image. 00:02:30.11\00:02:33.08 And He says--this is a big one--"be merciful." 00:02:33.11\00:02:35.85 You touched on forgiveness. 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.02 Chris, talk about forgiveness for a little bit. 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.92 >>Chris: Well, you know, it's interesting. 00:02:39.95\00:02:40.92 Forgiveness, mercy, this, these are 00:02:40.96\00:02:42.76 just like we're talking about, 00:02:42.79\00:02:43.89 you know, big chapters of the Bible. 00:02:43.93\00:02:46.26 Mercy is a central theme of the Bible, 00:02:46.29\00:02:49.26 where God gives to us that which we do not deserve. 00:02:49.30\00:02:52.47 And in the context of forgiveness, 00:02:52.50\00:02:54.90 when we talk about forgiveness, 00:02:54.94\00:02:55.90 forgiveness means we're giving up our right, 00:02:55.94\00:02:58.41 so to speak, to retaliate. 00:02:58.44\00:03:00.84 And so the Bible is quite clear: "The wages of sin is death." 00:03:00.88\00:03:04.55 And so from a practical standpoint, we are deserving, 00:03:04.58\00:03:08.42 or the reward we've earned-- 00:03:08.45\00:03:09.82 because we have all fallen short of the glory of God; 00:03:09.85\00:03:12.02 we've all sinned--is death. 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.92 But God in His mercy, according to Romans 5, 00:03:14.96\00:03:19.09 sent His Son while we were yet sinners, 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.26 so He would die for us. 00:03:21.30\00:03:22.66 God paid the penalty for us, giving us not what we deserve, 00:03:22.70\00:03:28.14 but rather, giving us what He desires in our life. 00:03:28.17\00:03:31.01 >>John: We're looking in Matthew 5, 00:03:31.04\00:03:32.24 and over in Matthew chapter 6, Jesus was really clear. 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.91 He said, "If you don't forgive others, God won't forgive you." 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.28 >>Gary: Yes. 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.48 >>John: Now, that's, that's time to sit up and take notice. 00:03:40.52\00:03:43.15 This is, this is real Christianity. 00:03:43.18\00:03:46.19 This comes down to, "Wait, this, this rubs my fur the wrong way. 00:03:46.22\00:03:49.69 I want to retaliate. I want to strike back." 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.56 God is talking about mercy and saying, 00:03:52.59\00:03:54.56 "No, no, show mercy, show grace to those who don't deserve it." 00:03:54.56\00:03:57.67 There's a story that deals with this in Matthew chapter 18. 00:03:57.70\00:04:01.04 And this is where Jesus said, 00:04:01.07\00:04:02.20 "The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king 00:04:02.24\00:04:04.87 who would take account of his servants." 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.41 You remember, there's this fellow who owed the king 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.21 an, a gargantuan sum, 10,000 talents. 00:04:08.24\00:04:11.78 It's a ludicrous debt that he has. 00:04:11.81\00:04:14.78 And he can't, he can't pay it, 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.62 but he falls down and worships the man, and he says, 00:04:16.65\00:04:18.89 "'Lord, have patience and I will pay it.' 00:04:18.92\00:04:21.92 The man was moved with compassion. 00:04:21.96\00:04:24.06 [And] he loosed him, and forgave [him] the debt." 00:04:24.09\00:04:27.23 A gargantuan debt. 00:04:27.23\00:04:28.50 >>Gary: Yes. 00:04:28.53\00:04:29.50 >>John: And then "the same servant went out, 00:04:29.53\00:04:30.77 found one of his fellow servants that owed him a hundred pence." 00:04:30.80\00:04:33.54 Comparatively, just nothing. And he forced him to pay it. 00:04:33.57\00:04:37.77 "The man said, 'I cannot.' 00:04:37.81\00:04:39.37 He cast him into prison until he paid the debt." 00:04:39.41\00:04:42.38 Jesus was not impressed, as you might expect. 00:04:42.41\00:04:46.28 Now, now, we've tied mercy to forgiveness. 00:04:46.31\00:04:49.02 I don't think that's wrong. I think that's accurate. 00:04:49.05\00:04:51.12 But are there other ways to talk about mercy? 00:04:51.15\00:04:52.85 How do we show mercy on a daily basis? 00:04:52.89\00:04:54.59 Okay, somebody backs into your car in the parking lot, 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.99 and what are you supposed to do? 00:04:57.03\00:04:58.03 "Hey, it's okay, I'll have mercy on you." 00:04:58.06\00:04:59.93 You could, right? You could. 00:04:59.96\00:05:02.76 >>Chris: Yeah, you know, you could have mercy by saying, 00:05:02.80\00:05:04.77 "Hey, this is okay." 00:05:04.80\00:05:05.87 And, and you know, we have to understand that, 00:05:05.90\00:05:07.87 that sometimes you need to take the rightful course with things 00:05:07.90\00:05:11.27 and exchange insurance. 00:05:11.31\00:05:12.54 But if somebody backs into your car and leaves a minor scratch, 00:05:12.57\00:05:17.51 do we really need to involve all that? 00:05:17.55\00:05:19.08 Can we just say, 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.35 "You know what, hey, accidents happen. It's not a big deal." 00:05:20.38\00:05:23.65 And so, yeah, I think we can exercise mercy on a daily basis. 00:05:23.69\00:05:27.42 Let's bring it very close to home. 00:05:27.46\00:05:29.89 Our spouse says something unkind to us. 00:05:29.92\00:05:33.70 Do we kind of put that in our back pocket, 00:05:33.73\00:05:36.16 to be used in a later confrontation, 00:05:36.20\00:05:38.90 or do we exercise mercy and say, 00:05:38.93\00:05:41.70 "You know what, I'm gonna just leave that behind"? 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.71 >>John: Yeah, it's, it's, we look at God and we say, 00:05:44.74\00:05:47.71 "How did God treat people?" 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.64 "The Lord is merciful and gracious, 00:05:49.68\00:05:52.11 slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy." 00:05:52.15\00:05:55.08 The concept is repeated in that one verse in the Psalms. 00:05:55.12\00:05:58.65 So it's important to God, ought to be important to us. 00:05:58.69\00:06:01.79 This is a characteristic of God, characteristic of God. 00:06:01.82\00:06:04.99 This is a characteristic of God that God wants to see 00:06:05.03\00:06:07.13 demonstrated in our lives. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.50 Sometimes you just got to swallow and move on, 00:06:09.53\00:06:11.67 or, or be big, and not make a big deal out of something small, 00:06:11.70\00:06:17.11 and let it go. 00:06:17.14\00:06:18.21 >>Gary: I think it's a, it's a, a personality trait, 00:06:18.24\00:06:21.44 a characteristic that is developed. 00:06:21.48\00:06:24.45 And as we understand the mercy we have been shown, 00:06:24.48\00:06:29.82 as told in that parable, 00:06:29.85\00:06:32.45 we are really under an obligation 00:06:32.49\00:06:36.46 to demonstrate a similar mercy to those 00:06:36.49\00:06:40.86 we come in contact with in everyday life. 00:06:40.90\00:06:43.80 Uh, if we've known mercy, we should show mercy. 00:06:43.83\00:06:47.57 >>John: So where do we find mercy? 00:06:47.60\00:06:49.44 If you want to know mercy, you go to the Bible. 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.51 You read the Word of God. 00:06:51.54\00:06:52.67 You say, "This is how God treated people. 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.58 This is how Jesus treated people." 00:06:54.61\00:06:56.71 There was a lady caught in the midst of sin, 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.58 dragged to the feet of Jesus. 00:06:59.61\00:07:01.15 They caught her in the act. They, they set her up, really. 00:07:01.18\00:07:03.85 It was, it was a test to see how Jesus would handle her. 00:07:03.89\00:07:07.02 She was as, as guilty as sin. 00:07:07.06\00:07:09.39 And Jesus said, "I don't condemn you. 00:07:09.42\00:07:12.33 Go and sin no more." 00:07:12.36\00:07:13.93 Man, we can be quick to condemn, can't we, people? 00:07:13.96\00:07:16.23 >>Chris: You know, and it's interesting, 00:07:16.26\00:07:17.57 in that story we often talk about the woman, 00:07:17.60\00:07:20.04 but there's another group that Jesus shows extreme mercy to, 00:07:20.07\00:07:22.87 and that is the Pharisees that bring her, 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.77 the religious leaders that bring her. 00:07:24.81\00:07:26.68 You'll remember He ends writing in the sand, 00:07:26.71\00:07:28.84 and, and we can conclude that 00:07:28.88\00:07:30.15 He was writing their sins in the sand. 00:07:30.18\00:07:32.38 And I, I emphasize that word, "sand," over and over again 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.62 because Jesus did not write their sins in stone; 00:07:35.65\00:07:37.89 He wrote them in sand. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.45 The assumption is later the wind would blow that away, 00:07:39.49\00:07:42.56 and He exercised mercy because He was trying to reach them. 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.76 And ultimately, when Jesus was hanging on the cross, 00:07:45.79\00:07:49.50 He shows that mercy and that forgiveness by saying, 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.67 "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." 00:07:52.70\00:07:54.77 >>John: Think of what Jesus did. 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.14 Judas? 00:07:56.17\00:07:57.77 Man, He, He suffered long with Judas. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.24 He could have tossed him out long ago. 00:08:00.28\00:08:02.51 God could have, could have scrunched up the planet 00:08:02.54\00:08:06.15 and tossed us in the universe's wastepaper basket, 00:08:06.18\00:08:08.88 right back at the beginning. 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.15 Instead, He said, "No, my love for the human family is so great 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.89 that my Son will come and die so that they might live." 00:08:13.92\00:08:16.42 This is just a huge concept, isn't it? 00:08:16.46\00:08:18.79 >>Chris: Absolutely. 00:08:18.83\00:08:19.49 >>John: And so God says to us: 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.46 "Blessed are the merciful: [and] they shall obtain mercy." 00:08:21.50\00:08:25.83 It's a Bible truth, and it's a, frankly, 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.67 a challenge to most if not all of us. 00:08:28.70\00:08:31.94 With Gary Kent from It Is Written Oceania 00:08:31.97\00:08:34.54 and Chris Holland from It Is Written Canada, 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.58 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:08:36.61\00:08:37.71 We'll be back with more on one of the great chapters 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.02 of the Bible in just a moment. 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.25 ¤[Music]¤ 00:08:42.28\00:08:45.29 ¤[Music]¤ 00:08:47.46\00:08:48.42 >>John: Today, our free book offer 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.19 is for one of my very favorite books, 00:08:50.23\00:08:52.19 "Steps to Christ." 00:08:52.23\00:08:54.20 Please call or write us, 00:08:54.23\00:08:55.86 and "Steps to Christ" will be on its way to you. 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.80 There's no cost and no obligation. 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.54 Just call 1-800-253-3000 00:09:01.57\00:09:05.01 and ask for the book "Steps to Christ." 00:09:05.04\00:09:07.88 You may also request this free book by writing to 00:09:07.91\00:09:10.91 It Is Written, P O Box 6, Chattanooga, TN 37401, 00:09:10.95\00:09:16.92 and we'll mail a copy to your address in North America. 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.22 For immediate access, 00:09:20.26\00:09:21.36 you can download a free electronic version of the book 00:09:21.39\00:09:23.96 "Steps to Christ" 00:09:23.99\00:09:24.86 from our website, ItIsWritten.com. 00:09:24.89\00:09:28.86 It Is Written is a faith-based ministry 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.57 made possible by viewers like you. 00:09:31.60\00:09:34.64 If you wish to help the worldwide outreach 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.74 of It Is Written, 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.11 your tax-deductible gift may be sent to the same address. 00:09:38.14\00:09:41.61 Or you can make a gift online at 00:09:41.64\00:09:43.41 ItIsWritten.com. 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.21 ¤[Music]¤ 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.78 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.15 I'm John Bradshaw in Gweru, Zimbabwe, 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.29 with Gary Kent of It Is Written Oceania 00:09:52.32\00:09:55.32 and Chris Holland of It Is Written Canada. 00:09:55.36\00:09:58.23 Together, we're taking on one of the great chapters of the Bible, 00:09:58.26\00:10:01.13 at least a part of it. 00:10:01.16\00:10:02.06 We're looking at the Beatitudes. 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.13 And it seems to me, gentlemen, 00:10:04.17\00:10:05.37 that we are down to Matthew chapter 5, verse 8: 00:10:05.40\00:10:08.40 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." 00:10:08.44\00:10:10.71 Chris? 00:10:10.74\00:10:11.91 >>Chris Holland: You know, "blessed are the pure in heart," 00:10:11.94\00:10:13.01 this is a very interesting thing 00:10:13.04\00:10:14.31 because Jesus here is clearly not talking about somebody 00:10:14.34\00:10:17.21 having a clean heart with clean arteries, 00:10:17.25\00:10:19.98 but He's getting to this, this concept of the heart being the, 00:10:20.02\00:10:24.09 "the inner man," the very essence of who someone is, 00:10:24.12\00:10:26.96 the very character. 00:10:26.99\00:10:28.52 And as you said earlier, 00:10:28.56\00:10:30.93 Jesus isn't saying this in a sort of works-oriented way, 00:10:30.96\00:10:34.63 but rather, this is what someone looks like 00:10:34.66\00:10:38.03 who has received the grace and mercy of God, 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.70 and the Holy Spirit is actively transforming them 00:10:40.74\00:10:44.14 into the likeness of Christ. 00:10:44.17\00:10:45.87 >>John: Today, purity is not a virtue that too many people 00:10:45.91\00:10:48.01 hold up as being particularly important. 00:10:48.04\00:10:49.88 And we could run through the list of things in society 00:10:49.91\00:10:52.61 today to, to suggest that what we might call traditional values 00:10:52.65\00:10:57.62 basically gone out the window. 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.95 To be morally pure in this modern age, 00:11:00.06\00:11:04.09 um--how do I say this?--seems to me might be a greater challenge 00:11:04.13\00:11:08.03 than years gone by. 00:11:08.06\00:11:09.26 Although if somebody wanted to be morally impure, 00:11:09.30\00:11:11.43 there's certainly many avenues for that, then. 00:11:11.47\00:11:15.40 But today, um, lax moral standards, 00:11:15.44\00:11:19.97 impurity, it's just everywhere. 00:11:20.01\00:11:21.84 What do you do to protect yourself against this, 00:11:21.88\00:11:25.51 this avalanche of impurity in the world today? 00:11:25.55\00:11:27.98 Gary, what do you, what does a person do? 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.82 >>Gary Kent: Well, you're right; 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.12 Jesus is getting to the real heart of the matter here. 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.52 Our, our thoughts, the seat of who we are, 00:11:34.56\00:11:38.59 what, what drives us-- 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.10 how do we build a, a wall, a fortress against this, 00:11:40.13\00:11:44.60 this flood that you've, you've been referring to? 00:11:44.63\00:11:47.77 I think it comes back to our relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:11:47.80\00:11:52.44 And, uh, that's, that's where it's centered. 00:11:52.47\00:11:55.01 And we've got to spend time with the Lord, 00:11:55.04\00:11:58.15 and we've got to build up a, a strong relationship, 00:11:58.18\00:12:02.15 which is our only defense, a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:12:02.18\00:12:05.22 We've got to be covered by Him; 00:12:05.25\00:12:06.49 we've got to be dependent upon Him. 00:12:06.52\00:12:08.22 >>John: We've got to be careful about what we're putting 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.82 into our mind. 00:12:09.86\00:12:11.03 That's, that, that's really important. Think about that. 00:12:11.06\00:12:12.76 And then, what do you do when temptation comes? 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.86 Because it's going to come. 00:12:14.93\00:12:16.13 And you can do nothing and get swept away by it. 00:12:16.16\00:12:18.67 You can fight it in your own strength, 00:12:18.70\00:12:20.30 and you'll get swept away by it. 00:12:20.34\00:12:22.27 Or you could call on Jesus and say, 00:12:22.30\00:12:23.84 "Here's a temptation bigger than me. I need Your help." 00:12:23.87\00:12:26.54 And that's that moment-by-moment dying to self; 00:12:26.57\00:12:29.88 that's living by faith, 00:12:29.91\00:12:31.08 living "by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:12:31.11\00:12:33.28 That's a constant connection and a turning to Jesus 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.85 in times of temptation. 00:12:35.88\00:12:37.25 But surely when He's talking about purity in heart, 00:12:37.29\00:12:39.55 He's not just talking about, uh, moral purity, 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.32 but you can go deeper. 00:12:42.36\00:12:43.39 Motives, intents, how you treat people, 00:12:43.43\00:12:47.93 what you think when somebody crosses you, right? 00:12:47.96\00:12:51.10 These sorts of things. 00:12:51.13\00:12:52.03 >>Chris: And I was going to say, you know, 00:12:52.07\00:12:53.37 it's very interesting that the promise there is, 00:12:53.40\00:12:55.47 is "blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." 00:12:55.50\00:12:58.87 The very original sin, from the devil to Eve, 00:12:58.91\00:13:03.71 is partake of this fruit, which you've been instructed 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.68 not to partake of, and "your eyes will be opened." 00:13:06.72\00:13:11.82 And, in fact, what that actually did 00:13:11.85\00:13:13.89 is it prevented Adam and Eve from any longer enjoying 00:13:13.92\00:13:19.66 fellowship with God face-to-face. 00:13:19.69\00:13:22.16 So sin actually does the very reverse 00:13:22.20\00:13:25.03 of opening our eyes to see God. 00:13:25.07\00:13:27.47 It closes our eyes from seeing God, 00:13:27.50\00:13:30.07 and so, as Gary was stating, 00:13:30.11\00:13:32.11 it is so vital to spend time in the Word. 00:13:32.14\00:13:35.11 You know, there's the verse that says, 00:13:35.14\00:13:36.44 "Resist the devil and he will flee you." 00:13:36.48\00:13:38.88 How do we resist the devil? 00:13:38.91\00:13:40.25 By, by every word, by studying God's Word. 00:13:40.28\00:13:43.18 By filling--you know, there are some religions in the world 00:13:43.22\00:13:46.39 that talk about emptying yourself. 00:13:46.42\00:13:48.12 >>John: Mmm, that's right. 00:13:48.16\00:13:49.32 >>Chris: But the biblical reality is that we need to not 00:13:49.36\00:13:53.46 empty ourself but, rather, we need to fill ourselves so full 00:13:53.50\00:13:57.77 of the Word of God that nothing else can come in, 00:13:57.80\00:14:01.07 and that will lead to this purity in heart, 00:14:01.10\00:14:04.34 that we might commune with God. 00:14:04.37\00:14:06.07 >>John: Gary, you had a thought on this. 00:14:06.11\00:14:07.31 >>Gary: We've been discussing the practical side of this, 00:14:07.34\00:14:10.28 the importance of resisting temptation 00:14:10.31\00:14:12.61 and finding the right way to do that, the biblical way. 00:14:12.65\00:14:15.48 And you've mentioned that well, Chris. 00:14:15.52\00:14:17.85 I believe that there's also a spiritual side to this. 00:14:17.89\00:14:20.29 As we are forgiven, we are cleansed; 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.96 we are purified through Jesus. 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.49 And it is when we are covered with His righteousness 00:14:26.53\00:14:29.90 that we will see God. 00:14:29.93\00:14:31.23 >>John: Mmm, beautiful thought. Yeah, appreciate that. 00:14:31.27\00:14:33.57 Okay, let's look at the next, the next beatitude, 00:14:33.60\00:14:36.34 the next blessing: 00:14:36.37\00:14:37.47 "Blessed are the peacemakers: 00:14:37.51\00:14:39.17 for they shall be called the children of God." 00:14:39.21\00:14:41.34 The peacemakers. Who are the peacemakers today? 00:14:41.38\00:14:43.21 >>Gary: Well, if ever there was a time that we need peacemakers, 00:14:43.24\00:14:46.55 it's now. 00:14:46.58\00:14:47.65 And who is it that can bring peace, 00:14:47.68\00:14:50.62 not just to our personal troubled hearts, 00:14:50.65\00:14:54.69 but to our world? 00:14:54.72\00:14:56.32 It's the Prince of Peace, Jesus. 00:14:56.36\00:14:58.33 >>John: Jesus is the Prince of Peace; that's right. 00:14:58.36\00:15:00.23 Now, now, there's a, 00:15:00.26\00:15:01.83 there's a great lack of peace in the world. 00:15:01.86\00:15:04.27 Talking globally, in communities, country to country, 00:15:04.30\00:15:07.44 just in our own lives, right? 00:15:07.47\00:15:09.07 Conflict everywhere. 00:15:09.10\00:15:10.37 And it seems, it seems, 00:15:10.41\00:15:12.17 maybe I'm just going after the low-hanging fruit here, 00:15:12.21\00:15:14.61 but it seems that, that people have a much lower threshold. 00:15:14.64\00:15:18.95 You know, we talk about road rage today. 00:15:18.98\00:15:20.95 That's really real. 00:15:20.98\00:15:22.45 People are very ugly and angry online, on the internet. 00:15:22.48\00:15:26.89 Uh, day to day, daily lives, 00:15:26.92\00:15:29.69 man, there's just a lot of conflict. 00:15:29.72\00:15:31.56 Conflict at home, 00:15:31.59\00:15:32.83 and you talked earlier, Chris, about, um, storing things up, 00:15:32.86\00:15:37.63 maybe for a later conversation with your spouse 00:15:37.67\00:15:40.20 because that person crossed you. 00:15:40.24\00:15:41.57 Just better to let it go, right? 00:15:41.60\00:15:43.84 >>Chris: Yeah, and it's, and it's an amazing thing 00:15:43.87\00:15:45.54 because we seem to be living at a time where peace is, 00:15:45.57\00:15:50.25 as you said, is this lower and lower standard. 00:15:50.28\00:15:51.98 And I actually believe we're actually seeing the fulfillment 00:15:52.01\00:15:54.78 of Matthew 24. 00:15:54.82\00:15:55.88 It's a verse we often overlook when we talk about 00:15:55.92\00:15:58.12 the signs of Jesus' coming, 00:15:58.15\00:16:00.46 but it talks about "lawlessness will abound," 00:16:00.49\00:16:03.22 and then it says this: 00:16:03.26\00:16:04.53 "and the love of many will grow cold." 00:16:04.56\00:16:07.13 >>John: Right. 00:16:07.20\00:16:08.30 >>Chris: And so what is the ultimate peace that can be 00:16:08.33\00:16:11.20 brought into someone's life? 00:16:11.23\00:16:13.10 And that is the experience of the gospel message 00:16:13.13\00:16:16.44 and true transformation into being like Jesus, 00:16:16.47\00:16:20.74 which is what the Beatitudes are all about. 00:16:20.78\00:16:22.98 And so the peacemakers are those that don't just preach 00:16:23.01\00:16:27.28 the gospel, but, rather, they live the gospel of Jesus 00:16:27.32\00:16:31.65 by encountering people 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.09 and bring this level of peace, espoused in the kingdom, 00:16:33.12\00:16:38.59 through personal interaction. 00:16:38.63\00:16:40.56 >>Gary: As we experience peace in our own lives through Jesus, 00:16:40.60\00:16:45.13 by knowing Jesus and experiencing the peace 00:16:45.17\00:16:48.47 that comes with the removal of guilt, sin from our lives, 00:16:48.50\00:16:53.31 we're in a position then to share that peace. 00:16:53.34\00:16:56.04 And I think that's what Jesus talks about as He continues 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.61 and talks about His followers as being the salt of the earth, 00:16:58.65\00:17:02.28 the light, and so forth. 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.19 We are called upon, as Christians, 00:17:04.22\00:17:06.86 to bring peace to troublous situations. 00:17:06.89\00:17:09.92 And we can only do that if we've experienced 00:17:09.96\00:17:12.43 the peace of Jesus in our own lives. 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.56 >>John: And so part of that means if you're holding a grudge 00:17:14.56\00:17:16.26 against somebody, you've got to let it go. 00:17:16.30\00:17:18.40 If you want to wade into a situation, 00:17:18.43\00:17:20.10 straighten everybody out, 00:17:20.14\00:17:21.20 it's better to just suck it up and move right on. 00:17:21.24\00:17:24.84 If you want to right all of the wrongs in everybody's life 00:17:24.87\00:17:27.81 around you, nah, that's not what God has called us to. 00:17:27.84\00:17:30.58 He's called us to be like Jesus. 00:17:30.61\00:17:32.41 And the Beatitudes are promises. 00:17:32.45\00:17:34.68 When Jesus comes into your life, you'll be like Him. 00:17:34.72\00:17:38.32 We'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:17:38.35\00:17:39.99 ¤[Music]¤ 00:17:40.02\00:17:43.73 ¤[Music]¤ 00:17:45.73\00:17:46.80 >>Announcer: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:17:46.83\00:17:49.23 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:17:49.26\00:17:52.37 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:17:52.40\00:17:56.10 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:17:56.14\00:17:59.44 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw 00:17:59.47\00:18:01.74 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:18:01.78\00:18:04.68 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks, 00:18:04.71\00:18:07.62 or watch it online every day on our website, 00:18:07.65\00:18:09.78 ItIsWritten.com. 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.92 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:18:11.95\00:18:14.02 Watch "Every Word." And look what Jesus said: 00:20:15.14\00:20:17.31 "Blessed are they which are persecuted 00:20:17.35\00:20:19.78 for righteousness' sake." 00:20:19.81\00:20:20.98 Now, I think we need to be careful here. 00:20:21.02\00:20:22.82 "Persecuted for righteousness' sake." 00:20:22.85\00:20:24.89 A lot of people bring trouble upon themselves 00:20:24.92\00:20:26.92 because they act like fools, 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.49 and they cause trouble themselves. 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.09 That's, that's not what Jesus is talking about. 00:20:31.13\00:20:34.00 But how is that? 00:20:34.03\00:20:35.26 So you're persecuted, 00:20:35.30\00:20:36.80 and you ought to be kind of happy about that. 00:20:36.83\00:20:39.43 Think about persecution in the world today. 00:20:39.47\00:20:41.04 In the Western world, 00:20:41.07\00:20:42.20 not a great deal of religious persecution. 00:20:42.24\00:20:44.91 There's some, though. 00:20:44.94\00:20:46.47 But around the world, there are people really suffering 00:20:46.51\00:20:49.58 for their faith in God, aren't there? 00:20:49.61\00:20:50.88 >>Chris: You know, it's interesting, John. 00:20:50.91\00:20:52.35 When we talk about this issue of persecution, 00:20:52.38\00:20:54.15 something that we also need to be careful of 00:20:54.18\00:20:56.89 is the idea that persecution is a requirement 00:20:56.92\00:21:00.36 for entry into heaven. 00:21:00.39\00:21:01.89 We've talked about this with all of the Beatitudes, 00:21:01.92\00:21:03.99 that the Beatitudes are not necessarily requirements, 00:21:04.03\00:21:07.20 but, rather, what happens when a person is coming 00:21:07.23\00:21:12.43 into relationship with Jesus and being moved by the Holy Spirit. 00:21:12.47\00:21:16.81 Jesus says, to your question of the person 00:21:16.84\00:21:20.11 who is experiencing real, genuine persecution-- 00:21:20.14\00:21:23.45 and there are many places in the world where Christians 00:21:23.48\00:21:25.98 face persecution and death on a daily basis-- 00:21:26.01\00:21:28.68 Jesus says you can be happy. 00:21:28.72\00:21:30.35 This is not happiness that I ate a cookie and, oh, I feel good. 00:21:30.39\00:21:33.99 But rather, this goes to the point of when we are with Jesus, 00:21:34.02\00:21:38.99 when we are following the ways of Jesus, 00:21:39.03\00:21:41.23 even when persecution comes, we can enjoy this, 00:21:41.26\00:21:45.47 this internal happiness, this internal joy 00:21:45.50\00:21:50.51 that we are in relationship with Jesus. 00:21:50.54\00:21:54.04 And even though we're being persecuted, 00:21:54.08\00:21:56.78 God has an inheritance for us. 00:21:56.81\00:21:59.05 >>John: Yeah, there's an assurance, isn't there? 00:21:59.08\00:22:00.65 There's an assurance that we've got to carry 00:22:00.68\00:22:02.28 into every situation in life, Gary. 00:22:02.32\00:22:04.72 >>Gary: The other thing of interest, 00:22:04.75\00:22:06.22 as we come to the last of the Beatitudes, 00:22:06.25\00:22:08.86 the final blessing here, is that it's present. 00:22:08.89\00:22:13.29 When Jesus talks about blessed are those 00:22:13.33\00:22:15.70 who are persecuted because of righteousness, 00:22:15.73\00:22:17.90 "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"-- 00:22:17.93\00:22:20.30 not something in the future, 00:22:20.34\00:22:21.44 but it's something that I think brings that assurance 00:22:21.47\00:22:24.24 that you've just spoken to. 00:22:24.27\00:22:25.84 Those who are being persecuted for Christ's sake, 00:22:25.87\00:22:28.28 for righteousness' sake, can experience the kingdom 00:22:28.31\00:22:31.68 and the blessings of heaven in the here and now. 00:22:31.71\00:22:34.12 >>John: Yeah, that's a significant point, isn't it? 00:22:34.15\00:22:36.08 There are some people battling. 00:22:36.12\00:22:38.29 Uh, friend told me, "My father was baptized. 00:22:38.32\00:22:41.82 If he goes back to his home country 00:22:41.86\00:22:44.39 and practices Christianity, he will be killed." 00:22:44.43\00:22:48.30 That's pretty significant. 00:22:48.33\00:22:49.70 And when Jesus was talking about this back in His day, 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.93 persecution, the fires of persecution were just about 00:22:51.97\00:22:55.64 to start blazing, you understand. 00:22:55.67\00:22:57.64 >>Chris: Well, I mean, and I have pastor friends in Canada, 00:22:57.67\00:23:01.04 when they converted to Christianity, 00:23:01.08\00:23:03.58 the brother was beaten severely and cast out of the home, 00:23:03.61\00:23:08.05 totally disowned. 00:23:08.08\00:23:09.72 And this is not 100 years ago; this isn't 1,500 years ago. 00:23:09.75\00:23:13.82 We are talking in the modern time, 00:23:13.86\00:23:15.29 in the last 20, 30, 40 years. 00:23:15.32\00:23:17.49 And as you pointed out, Gary, "theirs is the kingdom of God," 00:23:17.53\00:23:22.30 which is what the gospel does. 00:23:22.33\00:23:24.43 The gospel is not just a promise for hope in the future, 00:23:24.47\00:23:28.17 but it gives us hope now that we can experience the true presence 00:23:28.20\00:23:33.58 of Jesus in our lives every day, 00:23:33.61\00:23:36.34 even when we're persecuted, such as what happens in countries 00:23:36.38\00:23:40.75 where people can be killed and things like that. 00:23:40.78\00:23:43.25 Or, you convert to Christianity, 00:23:43.28\00:23:45.95 you change your life, and your friends say, 00:23:45.99\00:23:48.39 "I don't want to be friends with you anymore. 00:23:48.42\00:23:50.06 I don't like your new ways." 00:23:50.09\00:23:51.03 >>John: Right. 00:23:51.06\00:23:52.16 >>Chris: That, that, now, that's a minor persecution 00:23:52.19\00:23:53.46 compared to someone who's going to die. 00:23:53.50\00:23:54.83 >>John: That's tough to go through, though. 00:23:54.86\00:23:56.00 >>Chris: But it's still a practical reality 00:23:56.03\00:23:57.83 that people deal with. 00:23:57.87\00:23:58.77 And Jesus says, "You can have peace. 00:23:58.80\00:24:01.30 Oh, and by the way, you can have joy. 00:24:01.34\00:24:02.97 You can have happiness by enjoying fellowship with me." 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.77 >>John: Now, we like to be liked. 00:24:05.81\00:24:06.91 Not too many people like to be hated. 00:24:06.94\00:24:08.91 And Jesus says you are "blessed when people revile you, 00:24:08.94\00:24:13.65 persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you 00:24:13.68\00:24:17.42 falsely for my sake." 00:24:17.45\00:24:19.42 Who wants to be slandered?
