>>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:20.25\00:00:21.55 This is It Is Written. 00:00:21.58\00:00:22.65 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:22.68\00:00:23.95 When you open up the Bible, 00:00:23.99\00:00:25.89 particularly the early chapters of the Bible, 00:00:25.92\00:00:28.49 you discover that, way back then, 00:00:28.52\00:00:30.46 some individuals lived a very long time. 00:00:30.49\00:00:33.66 Methuselah, we know, lived to be 969. 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.10 Yet in today's society, when somebody gets to 80, 85, 90, 00:00:37.13\00:00:42.60 we get excited and think they've lived a long time. 00:00:42.64\00:00:44.84 A hundred, more common today than it was a generation ago, 00:00:44.87\00:00:48.78 is an outstanding achievement. 00:00:48.81\00:00:50.58 But compare that to the Bible, 00:00:50.61\00:00:52.11 and it's, not really so long at all. 00:00:52.15\00:00:54.32 Today we're going to talk about anti-aging secrets. 00:00:54.35\00:00:57.55 How you can live longer, healthier, happier, 00:00:57.59\00:01:01.26 and holier from a biblical perspective. 00:01:01.29\00:01:04.43 My guest today is Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:01:04.46\00:01:06.49 He is a nutritionist from the Bragg Health Institute 00:01:06.53\00:01:09.56 in Santa Barbara, California. 00:01:09.60\00:01:11.43 Dr. Westerdahl, thanks for joining me. 00:01:11.47\00:01:13.00 Welcome to It Is Written. 00:01:13.03\00:01:14.14 >>Dr. John Westerdahl: Thank you, John. 00:01:14.17\00:01:15.04 It's good to be with you today. 00:01:15.07\00:01:16.14 >>John: Now, I'm fascinated to know that you are a 00:01:16.17\00:01:17.81 board-certified anti-aging health practitioner. 00:01:17.84\00:01:20.64 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:01:20.68\00:01:21.24 >>John: What's that? 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.51 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's a organization called the American 00:01:22.54\00:01:24.38 Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. 00:01:24.41\00:01:26.35 And there's thousands of doctors 00:01:26.38\00:01:28.02 who are members of this organization, 00:01:28.05\00:01:30.29 and their specialty is into learning how we can 00:01:30.32\00:01:33.92 promote anti-aging, live longer and healthier lives. 00:01:33.96\00:01:37.76 And, uh, so what they have is they have certifications 00:01:37.79\00:01:40.43 for both medical doctors, board certifications, 00:01:40.46\00:01:43.26 as well as healthcare practitioners. 00:01:43.30\00:01:45.00 I'm a nutritionist, so I've taken the exams 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.60 and become board certified in that area as well. 00:01:47.64\00:01:49.77 Because that's a big interest of mine. 00:01:49.80\00:01:51.11 >>John: Anti-aging. 00:01:51.14\00:01:52.01 You can't stop a person getting old. 00:01:52.04\00:01:53.44 The only way to not get old is to die. 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.11 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:01:55.14\00:01:55.78 >>John: The longer you live, 00:01:55.81\00:01:56.75 the further back in time your birthday gets. 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.98 But I'm expecting that this idea of anti-aging is, 00:01:59.01\00:02:02.15 is warding off the ravages of Father Time. 00:02:02.18\00:02:04.55 Is that right? 00:02:04.59\00:02:05.25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:02:05.29\00:02:06.32 And, uh, it's not that we're against aging. 00:02:06.35\00:02:07.76 >>John: Oh, no. 00:02:07.79\00:02:08.66 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're going to age. 00:02:08.69\00:02:09.69 We're going to get a year older every year. 00:02:09.72\00:02:11.09 But there's things that we can do to slow 00:02:11.13\00:02:12.46 the aging process down and, in some cases, 00:02:12.49\00:02:16.06 even reverse some of that process, 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.30 by a healthy lifestyle and some of the new technologies 00:02:18.33\00:02:21.07 in the anti-aging field. 00:02:21.10\00:02:22.17 >>John: I've heard of this thing, 00:02:22.20\00:02:22.97 you look at your birth certificate; 00:02:23.00\00:02:24.17 it says you're 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. 00:02:24.21\00:02:26.04 But then you can do these little tests and it will tell you your, 00:02:26.07\00:02:29.21 your health age, 00:02:29.24\00:02:30.55 and you might be older than your birth certificate says, 00:02:30.58\00:02:33.31 or doing better. 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.25 Your body's younger than that piece of paper might suggest. 00:02:35.28\00:02:37.89 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:02:37.92\00:02:38.99 That's the different between chronological age 00:02:39.02\00:02:40.99 versus biological age. 00:02:41.02\00:02:43.02 Chronologically, we get a year, every year we get older. 00:02:43.06\00:02:46.73 But if you are living a healthy lifestyle, 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.03 you're taking good care of your health, 00:02:49.06\00:02:50.40 you don't have the health problems and so forth 00:02:50.43\00:02:52.40 that a lot of average Americans do, you, uh, 00:02:52.43\00:02:55.17 can be potentially younger than your chronological age, 00:02:55.20\00:02:59.07 just by the way you live. 00:02:59.11\00:03:00.41 >>John: Now, if you look at the average age for an individual 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.88 in a Western society, it's not that bad. 00:03:02.91\00:03:05.15 And the average lifespan that is, 00:03:05.18\00:03:08.35 is a whole lot longer than it was, 00:03:08.38\00:03:10.29 say, a generation or a hundred years ago. 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.76 Now, much of that is due to improvements in healthcare; 00:03:13.79\00:03:18.33 uh, infant mortality rates are down. 00:03:18.36\00:03:20.66 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:03:20.70\00:03:21.93 >>John: So those figures don't really give a very accurate 00:03:21.96\00:03:26.20 picture of how much better we're doing today 00:03:26.23\00:03:28.70 than we were some years ago. 00:03:28.74\00:03:29.87 Perhaps the numbers overstate the fact. 00:03:29.90\00:03:32.54 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:03:32.57\00:03:33.61 >>John: So, where are we today with healthcare? 00:03:33.64\00:03:34.71 How well are we doing as a society? 00:03:34.74\00:03:36.48 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're doing very poorly, 00:03:36.51\00:03:37.81 and I think a lot of people see that today. 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.58 Uh, the problem is that, from healthcare standpoint, 00:03:39.61\00:03:43.59 is there's so much emphasis put on cheaper health insurance, 00:03:43.62\00:03:47.52 or cheaper drugs, uh, less expensive, 00:03:47.56\00:03:50.83 uh, treatments that we can have, and so forth. 00:03:50.86\00:03:53.40 Some of those, uh, technologies are miraculous. 00:03:53.43\00:03:56.23 It's amazing what we are doing today 00:03:56.26\00:03:58.57 in the science of medicine. 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.07 However, we're not getting to the root cause 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.74 of the healthcare crisis problem, 00:04:02.77\00:04:04.31 and that has to do with the way we are living, our lifestyle. 00:04:04.34\00:04:08.78 Because for 90 percent of the cases, 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.65 it's our lifestyle that's causing the health problems that 00:04:11.68\00:04:14.85 we have today. 00:04:14.88\00:04:15.88 >>John: A few changes in the way we're living 00:04:15.92\00:04:17.29 our lives would affect our outcomes dramatically. 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.65 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:04:19.69\00:04:20.32 And that's why, 00:04:20.36\00:04:21.32 in addition to the field of anti-aging medicine, 00:04:21.36\00:04:23.53 this whole area of lifestyle medicine 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.89 is also emerging for doctors who see, 00:04:25.93\00:04:28.93 they're beginning to see the light that we can't spend 00:04:28.96\00:04:31.30 all this money in healthcare that we are today, 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.23 and all these exotic treatments in medicines and technologies, 00:04:33.27\00:04:36.87 that we need to do things that can be less expensive, 00:04:36.91\00:04:41.04 and that's like simple things: eating healthier, 00:04:41.08\00:04:44.41 getting regular exercise, learning to control your stress. 00:04:44.45\00:04:47.68 Lifestyle things. 00:04:47.72\00:04:48.72 >>John: So tell me, then, I go to the doctor, 00:04:48.75\00:04:49.98 I'm a diabetic, I have, um, some kind of, uh, cardiac issue. 00:04:50.02\00:04:54.86 I might have rheumatoid arthritis. 00:04:54.89\00:04:57.23 One thing I could do is say, 00:04:57.26\00:04:58.39 write me some prescriptions, Doctor. 00:04:58.43\00:04:59.96 And the doctors in many, or most, 00:05:00.06\00:05:01.53 cases will do just that. 00:05:01.56\00:05:02.70 But a lifestyle medicine physician might do what? 00:05:02.73\00:05:07.20 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lifestyle medicine doctor would sit down 00:05:07.24\00:05:09.20 with you and take a look at your diet, 00:05:09.24\00:05:10.74 and say, well, what kind of foods do you eat? 00:05:10.77\00:05:13.07 Of course, they would do some tests, 00:05:13.11\00:05:14.48 blood tests, and do the weight, height and weight, 00:05:14.51\00:05:16.85 all those tests, to get an assessment. 00:05:16.88\00:05:19.01 But they will look at your diet, they'll look at your exercise 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.95 and activity habits, 00:05:21.98\00:05:23.42 all the things related to your lifestyle, 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.25 really, and see where those may be the causes 00:05:25.29\00:05:28.12 of the health condition you may have. 00:05:28.16\00:05:29.76 And, as I said, in the majority of health problems today 00:05:29.79\00:05:34.20 are diet and lifestyle related. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.30 In fact, 70 percent of the patients that we have 00:05:36.33\00:05:39.07 in our hospitals today are there as a result of diet 00:05:39.10\00:05:41.67 and lifestyle-related causes. 00:05:41.70\00:05:43.17 >>John: The old saying is, "you are what you eat." 00:05:43.20\00:05:45.44 So what are some good foods that can, 00:05:45.47\00:05:48.48 uh, help, uh, perhaps, uh, ward off sickness, 00:05:48.51\00:05:53.52 or reverse diseases, or, or are anti-aging? 00:05:53.55\00:05:58.12 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's one message that I want to get 00:05:58.15\00:05:59.79 clear to you, and to our listeners today, 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.46 is that foods from plants prevent the diseases 00:06:02.49\00:06:06.33 that are killing us. 00:06:06.36\00:06:07.83 Foods from plants promote health, 00:06:07.86\00:06:11.67 longevity, and beauty. 00:06:11.70\00:06:13.13 >>John: So, what are some foods? 00:06:13.17\00:06:15.07 List some quickly, and say, well, 00:06:15.10\00:06:16.40 these ones are really good for you. 00:06:16.44\00:06:17.87 >>Dr. Westerdahl: The, uh, research is showing now, 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.81 eating more fruits and vegetables, 00:06:19.84\00:06:22.04 particularly colorful fruits and vegetables, 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.25 can significantly reduce your risk of having stroke and, 00:06:24.28\00:06:28.18 and, uh, heart disease, and cancer. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.42 There are wonderful compounds that we find in these fruits 00:06:30.45\00:06:34.62 and vegetables that God has put into nature for us to eat, 00:06:34.66\00:06:38.03 besides just the nutrients, the vitamins and minerals, 00:06:38.06\00:06:40.90 but the, we call them phytochemicals, 00:06:40.93\00:06:43.26 which are, include antioxidants. 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.47 Uh, these are compounds that actually prevent or slow 00:06:45.50\00:06:49.20 the process of aging. 00:06:49.24\00:06:50.31 They prevent our cells from rusting, you could say. 00:06:50.34\00:06:53.27 And, uh, they actually block some of the carcinogens 00:06:53.31\00:06:58.85 doing their damage to these cells as well. 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.02 >>John: I'm excited about that. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.12 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:07:02.15\00:07:03.08 >>John: What are the good antioxidant foods? 00:10:47.14\00:10:48.18 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that's actually a term 00:10:48.21\00:10:49.58 that was developed by Dan Buettner, 00:10:49.61\00:10:51.55 who is with National Geographic Magazine, 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.65 where a few years ago they had a special 00:10:53.68\00:10:56.05 on the secrets of living longer. 00:10:56.08\00:10:58.85 And they identified these blue zones. 00:10:58.89\00:11:01.42 These blue zones are areas in the world where people 00:11:01.46\00:11:04.56 or populations have exceptional health and longevity. 00:11:04.59\00:11:08.46 In that issue of National Geographic, 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.23 they identified three different cultures. 00:11:10.27\00:11:12.43 One is in Okinawa, Japan, 00:11:12.47\00:11:15.80 where there's a high level of centenarians in that area 00:11:15.84\00:11:19.11 who follow the traditional Okinawa lifestyle 00:11:19.14\00:11:22.11 and diet and so forth. 00:11:22.14\00:11:23.41 The second area was in Sardinia, Italy. 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.92 And the third, the blue zone of America, 00:11:26.95\00:11:29.62 was in Loma Linda, California, 00:11:29.65\00:11:32.09 which is the high population of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:11:32.12\00:11:34.92 >>John: And yet, they're living long lives in spite of the fact 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.13 that they're not living in a bucolic little paradise. 00:11:37.16\00:11:40.23 So let's talk about these places. 00:11:40.26\00:11:41.93 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:11:41.96\00:11:42.83 >>John: Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda: 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.03 what are the factors that contribute to this longevity? 00:11:44.07\00:11:46.84 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, when they look at those different 00:11:46.87\00:11:48.40 populations, they find some similar patterns. 00:11:48.44\00:11:51.54 First of all, a lot of them eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. 00:11:51.57\00:11:54.24 They eat a, predominantly a plant-based diet. 00:11:54.28\00:11:56.98 So they're getting a lot of those antioxidants 00:11:57.01\00:11:58.81 and health properties we talked about earlier. 00:11:58.85\00:12:01.42 Uh, they have a, uh, culture where there's a lot of 00:12:01.45\00:12:04.59 socialization with each other. 00:12:04.62\00:12:06.89 They have, uh, their friends; in the Seventh-day Adventist 00:12:06.92\00:12:10.03 population they worship together; 00:12:10.06\00:12:12.23 the community has a similar philosophy of, of life. 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.40 In, um, Okinawa it's the same way. 00:12:15.43\00:12:18.23 These populations are also, uh, 00:12:18.27\00:12:20.20 tend to be more active than other parts, 00:12:20.24\00:12:22.77 their counterparts in their areas where they live. 00:12:22.80\00:12:25.41 And, um, so there's a number of factors that contribute 00:12:25.44\00:12:28.81 to their health and longevity. 00:12:28.84\00:12:30.25 >>John: Hmm. Now, you mentioned the Hunza people. 00:12:30.28\00:12:33.92 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:12:33.95\00:12:35.15 >>John: It Is Written, when George Vandeman was the director 00:12:35.18\00:12:37.65 and the speaker of It Is Written some years ago, 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.49 It Is Written traveled to that part of the world 00:12:39.52\00:12:42.92 and met with the Hunza people, and explored some of the, 00:12:42.96\00:12:47.86 the health secrets of these people that live long. 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.30 What can you tell us about the, the Hunzas? 00:12:50.33\00:12:52.63 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, the Hunzas are up in the Himalayan 00:12:52.67\00:12:54.40 Mountains, very high, used to be northern Pakistan; 00:12:54.44\00:12:57.91 now it is part of Pakistan. 00:12:57.94\00:13:00.41 And, uh, they have a very unique lifestyle in that they live 00:13:00.44\00:13:03.85 a totally natural way of living. 00:13:03.88\00:13:06.35 They eat all organic food. 00:13:06.38\00:13:08.08 They eat predominantly a plant-based diet; 00:13:08.12\00:13:10.22 actually, only 13 days of the year do they eat some meat. 00:13:10.25\00:13:13.72 The rest of the time they follow a vegetarian diet. 00:13:13.76\00:13:16.36 Um, they're amongst the longest living people in the world. 00:13:16.39\00:13:20.06 Uh, reports of ages up to 120 to 130 years of age, 00:13:20.10\00:13:24.53 uh, that have been reported in the Journal 00:13:24.57\00:13:27.10 of the American Medical Association. 00:13:27.14\00:13:28.70 And I know when Pastor Vandeman went over there, 00:13:28.74\00:13:31.47 he had a picture of an individual that was 120 years 00:13:31.51\00:13:34.21 old and was really in good health. 00:13:34.24\00:13:36.14 They have a, uh, a lifestyle that is similar to these other 00:13:36.18\00:13:40.62 blue zones in that it contributes to a population 00:13:40.65\00:13:44.59 that has a lot of centenarians in their population. 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.86 >>John: Now, how do we define aging? 00:13:46.89\00:13:49.52 What are some of the different theories about aging? 00:13:49.56\00:13:52.19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a lot of ways of defining it. 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.23 People think of wrinkles. 00:13:54.30\00:13:55.43 You're losing your hair. 00:13:55.46\00:13:57.23 The typical things we think of aging. 00:13:57.27\00:14:00.10 >>John: I guess I'm aging. 00:14:00.14\00:14:01.07 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And, and we all are aging 00:14:01.10\00:14:02.70 to some degree, right? 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.01 >>John: Um-hmm. 00:16:26.75\00:16:28.02 >>John: I'm going to be going to the bathroom all day long. 00:16:28.05\00:16:29.32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You're going to be going, so, 00:16:29.35\00:16:30.82 you're losing that water. 00:16:30.85\00:16:32.49 You want to have water that's going to keep within the cells 00:16:32.52\00:16:34.99 and retained in there to keep them healthy. 00:16:35.02\00:16:36.89 So really, the best thing to get your water is to eat your water. 00:16:36.93\00:16:40.93 And that's another reason for eating a plant-based diet: 00:16:40.96\00:16:43.70 eating the raw fruits, 00:16:43.73\00:16:45.47 particularly raw fruits and vegetables, 00:16:45.50\00:16:47.60 have a water within their cells that's going to be much easier 00:16:47.64\00:16:50.61 to get within your cell. 00:16:50.64\00:16:51.74 >>John: Now, convince me that this isn't cranky. 00:16:51.77\00:16:54.28 I mean, I can imagine my friend in Tupelo, Mississippi, 00:16:54.31\00:16:56.81 or in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, or in Billings, Montana, 00:16:56.85\00:17:00.35 going, ugh, the guy wants to eat his water, 00:17:00.38\00:17:02.62 he wants to turn me into a rabbit. 00:17:02.65\00:17:04.19 Help me understand that this is good, 00:17:04.22\00:17:07.26 solid, healthy, level, mainstream stuff. 00:17:07.29\00:17:11.19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah, this is, this is good science, 00:17:11.23\00:17:13.50 based on what we call the science of cellular water, 00:17:13.53\00:17:16.80 and is one of the concepts of aging: that we lose our water. 00:17:16.83\00:17:21.44 As we get older, there's no question, 00:17:21.47\00:17:23.74 our body water in the body cells, 00:17:23.77\00:17:26.07 the water within our cells are lost as we get older. 00:17:26.11\00:17:28.81 So we're trying to build healthy cells to keep that water within. 00:17:28.84\00:17:32.28 >>John: All right. 00:17:32.31\00:17:33.15 I'm a believer; I'm not a skeptic. 00:17:33.18\00:17:34.28 All right, what have we got here, 00:17:34.32\00:17:35.62 and what are we going to put into this machine? 00:17:35.65\00:17:36.95 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay, so, in order to build healthy cells 00:17:36.99\00:17:38.39 and, we're going to start with putting some antioxidants in. 00:17:38.42\00:17:42.29 This is pomegranate juice. 00:17:42.32\00:17:44.26 >>John: All right. 00:17:44.29\00:17:45.36 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Pomegranate juice is loaded with 00:17:45.39\00:17:46.26 antioxidants that... 00:17:46.29\00:17:47.20 >>John: Pomegranate juice. 00:17:47.23\00:17:48.40 >>Dr. Westerdahl: ...that, uh, help protect cells from damage. 00:17:48.43\00:17:51.40 >>John: All right. 00:17:51.43\00:17:52.00 That's good and red. 00:17:52.03\00:17:52.70 You mentioned before the red, 00:17:52.73\00:17:53.54 the reds and purples are good stuff. 00:17:53.57\00:17:55.50 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:17:55.54\00:17:56.54 >>John: Okay. 00:17:56.57\00:17:57.57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to put 00:17:57.61\00:17:58.54 a vegetable protein in here. 00:17:58.57\00:17:59.74 This is soy, soy milk. 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.58 >>John: All right. 00:18:01.61\00:18:02.78 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So that's going to provide you with 00:18:02.81\00:18:03.98 good-quality vegetable protein. 00:18:04.01\00:18:06.05 >>John: All right, and you get soy milk 00:18:06.08\00:18:07.42 at the supermarket, right? 00:18:07.45\00:18:08.28 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:18:08.32\00:18:09.45 And that's also part of the cell walls, good protein. 00:18:09.48\00:18:11.95 And then blueberries. 00:18:11.99\00:18:13.49 >>John: All right. 00:18:13.52\00:18:14.49 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Probably my favorite fruit. 00:18:14.52\00:18:15.46 Blueberries are loaded with those antioxidants 00:18:15.49\00:18:16.99 that protect cells from, um, being damaged. 00:18:17.03\00:18:20.03 >>John: I love blueberries. 00:18:20.06\00:18:21.33 Some of the best things you can get. 00:18:21.36\00:18:22.66 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So pour all the blueberries in there. 00:18:22.70\00:18:24.00 >>John: I enjoy growing blueberries. 00:18:24.03\00:18:25.33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something 00:18:25.37\00:18:26.70 that a lot of people may not know about. 00:18:26.74\00:18:28.47 This is what's called soy lecithin. 00:18:28.50\00:18:31.37 Now, people don't realize that every cell wall in your body 00:18:31.41\00:18:35.94 is made of lecithin. 00:18:35.98\00:18:37.51 So by contributing this, kind of supplementing to this drink 00:18:37.55\00:18:40.82 some lecithin that will go into your body, 00:18:40.85\00:18:42.95 so you can absorb it to build those healthy, 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.22 healthy, uh, cells as well. 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.09 >>John: Where do I get this from?
