I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:20.25\00:00:23.08 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:23.12\00:00:24.35 We're all familiar with dieting, some of us very familiar. 00:00:24.39\00:00:29.09 And dieting is today a multi-billion-dollar industry. 00:00:29.12\00:00:33.36 And there are diets everywhere. 00:00:33.40\00:00:35.63 The South Beach diet, and the Atkins diet, 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.67 and the paleo diet. 00:00:38.70\00:00:40.07 And many people try these diets with success, 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.74 and many don't. 00:00:42.77\00:00:44.84 You're not surprised, or wouldn't be surprised, 00:00:44.87\00:00:46.91 if you walked by a bookstore today and saw a brand new diet 00:00:46.94\00:00:51.41 book right there being advertised in the window of your 00:00:51.45\00:00:54.25 favorite bookstore. 00:00:54.28\00:00:55.22 You wouldn't be surprised. 00:00:55.25\00:00:56.99 But what if I was to tell you today that there is an original 00:00:57.02\00:01:00.86 diet given us by God, found in the holy Bible? 00:01:00.89\00:01:06.19 And I might suggest to you today that it is the most effective, 00:01:06.23\00:01:10.03 healthy diet ever conceived. 00:01:10.07\00:01:12.97 Well, I'm being joined today by Dr. John Westerdahl, 00:01:13.00\00:01:15.60 a nutritionist with the Bragg Health Institute 00:01:15.64\00:01:18.07 in Santa Barbara, California. 00:01:18.11\00:01:19.84 Dr. Westerdahl, thanks for joining me today. 00:01:19.87\00:01:21.61 >>Dr. John Westerdahl: Oh, great to be with you today, John. 00:01:21.64\00:01:23.18 >>John: Now, you're of the opinion that this book, 00:01:23.21\00:01:24.78 the Bible, contains the original diet. 00:01:24.81\00:01:28.38 Tell me something about that. 00:01:28.42\00:01:29.55 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, it does. 00:01:29.58\00:01:30.72 I look at the Bible as the greatest book on preventive 00:01:30.75\00:01:32.72 medicine ever written. 00:01:32.75\00:01:34.36 And there's a lot of things in here about diet and nutrition, 00:01:34.39\00:01:37.46 and mentioning all different types of foods. 00:01:37.49\00:01:39.69 >>John: Why should a Christian believer 00:01:39.73\00:01:41.40 be worried about his or her health, 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.63 other than you might avoid a heart attack, 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.50 not that that's a bad thing, or live another year or two? 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.34 Why is it important to a believer? 00:01:49.37\00:01:50.87 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, the Bible tells us 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.77 that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.41 and that we should take care of it and honor it, 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.75 and put things in it that promote good health 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.65 as opposed to things that may destroy this temple, 00:02:00.68\00:02:03.42 this living temple. 00:02:03.45\00:02:04.75 It's a magnificent creation of God, 00:02:04.79\00:02:06.86 and we need, need to treat it that way. 00:02:06.89\00:02:09.12 >>John: Tell me about some of these health principles 00:02:09.16\00:02:11.16 you find in the Bible. 00:02:11.19\00:02:12.19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:02:12.23\00:02:13.16 >>John: Because the Bible is good for us, 00:02:13.19\00:02:14.20 body, mind and spirit, containing principles that, 00:02:14.23\00:02:17.77 that minister to all of those things. 00:02:17.80\00:02:20.57 Now, we can go back, 00:02:20.60\00:02:21.80 I guess, all the way to the Old Testament... 00:02:21.84\00:02:24.14 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:02:24.17\00:02:25.31 >>John: ...and find health principles given us by God. 00:02:25.34\00:02:28.78 What are some of those? 00:02:28.81\00:02:30.08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, some of those principles, 00:02:30.11\00:02:31.65 of course, in spending time with God in prayer and meditation, 00:02:31.68\00:02:35.18 that's a health principle. 00:02:35.22\00:02:36.15 >>John: It's good for your health, huh? 00:02:36.18\00:02:37.22 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's good for your health. 00:02:37.25\00:02:37.89 It helps to control stress. 00:02:37.92\00:02:39.29 It gives us peace of mind. 00:02:39.32\00:02:41.09 And that's really important. 00:02:41.12\00:02:42.59 That's like nutrition for your brain, 00:02:42.62\00:02:44.89 and for your mind, and for your spirit. 00:02:44.93\00:02:46.93 Also, the Bible, 00:02:46.96\00:02:47.93 if you go back to the old times in the Bible, 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.73 the Old Testament and so forth, 00:02:50.77\00:02:52.30 there are principles that God tells us of ways we should eat. 00:02:52.33\00:02:55.90 From the very beginning, 00:02:55.94\00:02:57.24 in the Garden of Eden diet in Genesis 1:29. 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.24 >>John: There was a, a certain diet in the Garden of Eden. 00:03:00.28\00:03:03.71 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, there was. 00:03:03.75\00:03:04.45 >>John: The Garden of Eatin'. 00:03:04.48\00:03:05.21 What were they eatin' in Eden? 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, they were eating 00:03:07.08\00:03:07.98 an all plant-based diet. 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.52 There's no killing in the Garden of Eden. 00:03:10.55\00:03:12.69 It was all plant foods. 00:03:12.72\00:03:15.29 It was a vegetarian diet. 00:03:15.32\00:03:17.33 >>John: So what'd they eat? 00:03:17.36\00:03:19.06 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So they ate fruits and nuts. 00:03:19.09\00:03:21.16 Later on, uh, they ate vegetables. 00:03:21.20\00:03:23.87 God provided those foods to us, 00:03:23.90\00:03:25.63 because He knew that those were the best for our health. 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.40 He supplied all the nutrients that our body needs for good 00:03:28.44\00:03:32.01 health and for wellness. 00:03:32.04\00:03:33.84 And that's what science today is showing, 00:03:33.88\00:03:35.98 that eating more plant foods, fruits and vegetables 00:03:36.01\00:03:38.98 and whole grains, nuts, legumes, beans, seeds, 00:03:39.01\00:03:42.58 these things actually have things in them 00:03:42.62\00:03:44.89 that help prevent disease. 00:03:44.92\00:03:47.26 Not only give us good nutrition, but also prevent disease. 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.56 And in some cases can reverse disease, 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.73 if we follow this type of diet. 00:03:52.76\00:03:54.36 >>John: There's that famous old quotation, 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.37 “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food." 00:03:57.40\00:04:00.57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that was Hippocrates, 00:04:00.60\00:04:02.64 the father of modern medicine, 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.77 and he, uh, pointed that out. 00:04:04.81\00:04:06.78 And that's very good counsel. 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.91 Because if we follow that rule and that guidance 00:04:08.94\00:04:12.81 that we would live longer, healthier lives. 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.82 And something to think about, 00:04:14.85\00:04:15.95 when you look at all the cultures of the world. 00:04:15.98\00:04:18.55 Before there was medicine, there was food. 00:04:18.59\00:04:22.16 Food was the medicine. 00:04:22.19\00:04:23.39 It was not only food to give you good nutrition, 00:04:23.43\00:04:26.70 but it also was your medicine. 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.06 >>John: The whole concept of food being medicine, 00:04:29.10\00:04:31.93 the best medicine being food, is interesting, isn't it? 00:04:31.97\00:04:34.14 What were some of these health laws God introduced 00:04:34.17\00:04:36.71 back in Old Testament times? 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.17 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, one of the biggest ones that I note 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.61 is that, uh, to not eat animal fat 00:04:40.64\00:04:44.55 or eat the blood of animals. 00:04:44.58\00:04:46.82 And when you think about that, those are the disease components 00:04:46.85\00:04:50.75 of those foods. 00:04:50.79\00:04:52.42 >>John: God said eons ago, don't eat fat or blood. 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.96 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:04:55.99\00:04:56.83 >>John: And someone's going to say, 00:04:56.86\00:04:57.86 well, that was Moses, 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.30 and we don't do all that Mosaic stuff now. 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.90 But let me come to Acts, chapter 15 and verse 20, 00:05:02.93\00:05:07.40 and this is at the Jerusalem Council, 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.34 where the New Testament church, the early church, 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.37 was wrestling with certain ideas. 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.81 What principles must we enforce upon gentile believers? 00:05:14.84\00:05:19.61 Acts 15, verse 20: 00:05:19.65\00:05:21.42 “But that we write unto them 00:05:21.45\00:05:23.05 that they abstain from pollutions of idols, 00:05:23.08\00:05:26.12 and from fornication, and from things strangled, 00:05:26.15\00:05:31.26 and from blood.” 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.19 The New Testament book of Acts, very plainly, don't eat blood. 00:05:33.23\00:05:38.77 And again, why? 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.60 Why, why is that principle good? 00:05:40.64\00:05:41.70 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, blood carries the impurities 00:05:41.74\00:05:43.30 of the body. 00:05:43.34\00:05:44.54 So any illness of that cow or whatever the animal may be, 00:05:44.57\00:05:49.21 we're eating that. 00:05:49.24\00:05:50.61 You know, there's been concerns about mad cow disease 00:05:50.65\00:05:52.98 in recent years. 00:05:53.01\00:05:54.18 But what happens when we eat all this blood? 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.82 And when you eat meat, that's what gives it its color, 00:05:56.85\00:06:00.49 you know. 00:06:00.52\00:06:01.66 You have blood; that juicy hamburger has a lot of blood 00:06:01.69\00:06:04.16 in it that you're eating. 00:06:04.19\00:06:05.06 >>John: Um-hmm. 00:06:05.09\00:06:06.16 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So the concept of not eating blood, 00:06:06.19\00:06:08.80 not eating the animal fat, is very good advice, I think, 00:06:08.83\00:06:12.80 from the Bible. 00:06:12.83\00:06:13.67 >>John: But didn't Jesus eat meat? 00:06:13.70\00:06:15.14 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, he did. 00:06:15.17\00:06:16.24 >>John: The way Jesus ate meat then, 00:06:16.27\00:06:18.04 did it differ substantively from the way people eat meat today? 00:06:18.07\00:06:21.54 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, he followed the principles 00:06:21.58\00:06:23.21 taught of not eating the animal fat and the animal blood. 00:06:23.24\00:06:26.35 He did eat fish, 00:06:26.38\00:06:28.48 which is different than some of those other animals. 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.12 >>John: Now, somebody suggested to me that in Bible times 00:06:31.15\00:06:33.12 the way they drained the blood out of all of the meat... 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.86 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:06:34.89\00:06:35.89 >>John: ...it wouldn't have tasted markedly 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.96 different from the sole of one's shoe. 00:06:37.99\00:06:39.76 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:06:39.79\00:06:40.96 >>John: Unless, of course, it had been seasoned otherwise. 00:06:41.00\00:06:42.66 >>Dr. Westerdahl: They would, uh, actually cut it up, 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.00 wash out all that blood, take all that fat out, 00:06:45.03\00:06:48.10 and it would be just the, 00:06:48.14\00:06:49.87 the description is it tastes like blah. 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.11 >>John: Yeah. 00:06:52.14\00:06:53.01 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's no flavor, 00:06:53.04\00:06:53.64 but they would season it. 00:06:53.68\00:06:54.71 >>John: Yeah. 00:06:54.74\00:06:55.91 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So, but they would remove all the blood 00:06:55.94\00:06:56.85 and all the fat. 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.11 >>John: You see those pictures of the piece of steak that has 00:06:58.15\00:07:00.08 been cut with a knife, and it's beautifully pink on the inside. 00:07:00.12\00:07:04.82 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's all the blood. 00:07:04.85\00:07:05.82 >>John: Jesus wasn't eating that, was he? 00:07:05.85\00:07:07.19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: No, he wasn't. 00:07:07.22\00:07:08.16 >>John: And there's no way around that. 00:07:08.19\00:07:08.89 He, certainly he ate meat. 00:07:08.92\00:07:10.33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.26 Well, Jesus ate the Mediterranean diet. 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.73 Now, the traditional Mediterranean diet, 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.50 not the Mediterranean diet of today, 00:07:14.56\00:07:16.56 which incorporates a lot of Western foods. 00:07:16.60\00:07:19.20 But, uh, that was largely a plant-based diet. 00:07:19.23\00:07:22.37 Lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, 00:07:22.40\00:07:25.01 beans and legumes, with small amounts of fish and so forth. 00:07:25.04\00:07:28.38 >>John: And another thing too: he ate that diet without 00:07:28.41\00:07:31.95 owning an automobile or riding the bus. 00:07:31.98\00:07:34.95 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lot of exercise. 00:07:34.98\00:07:36.35 >>John: A lot of exercise. 00:07:36.38\00:07:37.09 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:07:37.12\00:07:37.99 >>John: Yeah. 00:07:38.02\00:07:38.69 So if we, perhaps, incorporated 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.96 that type of exercise regime into our diet today, 00:07:40.99\00:07:43.99 that alone would make a big difference. 00:07:44.03\00:07:46.23 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:07:46.26\00:07:47.23 It's all part of having a balanced lifestyle. 00:07:47.30\00:07:49.26 And including, nutrition is key, 00:07:49.30\00:07:51.47 but exercise is very important too. 00:07:51.50\00:07:53.70 >>John: The original diet. 00:07:53.74\00:07:55.17 It's just plain good for you. 00:07:55.20\00:07:57.47 And it comes to you right here, from the Bible. 00:07:57.51\00:08:00.31 How good for us is it? 00:08:00.34\00:08:02.78 And in what ways can we learn to incorporate 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.91 not only the principles of this diet, 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.61 but the blessings of this diet into our lives? 00:08:06.65\00:08:08.92 I'll be back with more 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.25 from Dr. John Westerdahl in just a moment. 00:08:10.29\00:08:13.86 >>John: The same killer diseases which have taken the lives of 00:08:14.69\00:08:17.43 millions and millions of people every year 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.86 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:08:19.89\00:08:22.26 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.60 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:08:24.63\00:08:27.10 Now, you want to avoid them, 00:08:27.14\00:08:28.44 so make sure you get today's free offer, 00:08:28.47\00:08:30.44 “Healthcare God's Way,” 00:08:30.47\00:08:32.71 which I co- wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:08:32.74\00:08:35.11 Get “Healthcare God's Way.” 00:08:35.14\00:08:37.11 Call 1-800-253-3000, 00:08:37.15\00:08:40.02 write to the address on your screen, 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.15 make sure you visit itiswritten.com. 00:08:42.18\00:08:45.05 >>John: This is It Is Written. 00:08:45.82\00:08:46.92 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:08:46.96\00:08:48.02 Thank you for joining me today. 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.22 I'm joined by nutritionist Dr. John Westerdahl 00:08:49.26\00:08:52.36 from the Bragg Health Institute in Santa Barbara, California. 00:08:52.39\00:08:55.70 We're talking today about the original diet. 00:08:55.73\00:08:58.87 Not the South Beach diet; that came a little bit later on. 00:08:58.90\00:09:01.57 Not the paleo diet; that was added kind of recently. 00:09:01.60\00:09:05.24 But the original diet. 00:09:05.27\00:09:07.34 The Bible diet. 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.21 Now, Dr. Westerdahl, very interesting Bible verse 00:09:09.24\00:09:12.28 I wanted to share with you... 00:09:12.31\00:09:14.08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:09:14.12\00:09:14.92 >>John: ...you right now. 00:09:14.95\00:09:15.72 Exodus 15, verse 26. 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.02 God said this: 00:09:18.05\00:09:19.82 “If you will diligently harken 00:09:19.85\00:09:21.22 to the voice of the Lord thy God, 00:09:21.26\00:09:22.96 and do that which is right in His sight, 00:09:22.99\00:09:25.03 and give ear to His statutes and keep His commandments, 00:09:25.06\00:09:29.26 I will put none of these diseases upon you 00:09:29.30\00:09:32.60 that I have put upon the Egyptians. 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.60 For I am the Lord that healeth thee.” 00:09:34.64\00:09:36.50 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:09:36.54\00:09:37.27 >>John: So follow my plan, 00:09:37.31\00:09:38.87 you will not get the Egyptian diseases. 00:09:38.91\00:09:41.34 What did those Egyptians suffer from? 00:09:41.38\00:09:43.58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Those Egyptians had heart disease, 00:09:43.61\00:09:46.18 they had cancer, they had arthritis, 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.18 they had diabetes. 00:09:48.22\00:09:50.22 When we look at the diseases of ancient Egypt, 00:09:50.25\00:09:53.82 because they didn't follow God's diet or His diet plan, 00:09:53.86\00:09:58.06 we look at diseases that are very similar 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.70 to what we have in the United States today. 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.76 The same diseases they had in ancient Egypt 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.00 are the same diseases we have today. 00:10:05.03\00:10:07.34 You know, it's getting back to, 00:10:07.37\00:10:08.90 going back to God's principles of healthful living. 00:10:08.94\00:10:11.67 And if we follow those, we would not have those diseases. 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.61 >>John: Now, there are some cancers 00:10:14.64\00:10:15.41 that are going to get you anyway. 00:10:15.44\00:10:16.98 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.15 >>John: It might be because of environmental factors. 00:10:18.18\00:10:19.65 It might be hereditary. 00:10:19.68\00:10:20.62 It might have genes that are predisposed. 00:10:20.65\00:10:22.52 So we can't be too strident and say, 00:10:22.55\00:10:24.22 everybody who eats like me will never get sick. 00:10:24.25\00:10:26.89 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. Yeah. 00:10:26.92\00:10:27.62 >>John: Can we? 00:10:27.66\00:10:28.49 >>Dr. Westerdahl: What you would do, 00:10:28.52\00:10:29.46 you would reduce your risk of those diseases. 00:10:29.49\00:10:32.13 >>John: Enormously, right? 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.03 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And enormously. 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.13 >>John: Yeah. 00:10:34.20\00:10:34.93 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Seventy percent 00:10:34.96\00:10:35.86 of all hospital admissions are, 00:10:35.90\00:10:38.03 the patients that are in the hospital today 00:10:38.07\00:10:39.87 are there because of their diet and lifestyle. 00:10:39.90\00:10:43.37 So if we followed more healthful living principles, 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.88 uh, a lot of those people won't be there. 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.58 By following this original diet that God has given us, 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.92 we can substantially reduce those risks of those diseases. 00:10:53.95\00:10:57.59 >>John: The point is, by simply making some small changes, 00:10:57.62\00:11:01.69 by incorporating God's principles into our lives, 00:11:01.72\00:11:03.93 there are many people who are flat out going to avoid 00:11:03.96\00:11:07.13 doctor's visits, emergency room visits. 00:11:07.20\00:11:09.73 And they're going to arrive 20 years later to their funeral. 00:11:09.76\00:11:12.63 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's correct. 00:11:12.67\00:11:13.77 And what's interesting to see is, 00:11:13.80\00:11:15.10 when you take people who are following the typical American 00:11:15.14\00:11:18.37 diet, we call it the standard American diet, 00:11:18.41\00:11:21.01 SAD, S-A-D, 00:11:21.04\00:11:23.08 when you take people away from that and get them on 00:11:23.11\00:11:25.38 a plant-based diet, 00:11:25.41\00:11:26.82 they can actually reverse some of these diseases, 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.55 such as diabetes. 00:11:29.58\00:11:30.95 And there have been studies by one of my friends 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.59 and colleagues, Dr. Dean Ornish, for instance, 00:11:33.62\00:11:36.06 who did a study where he put people on an all plant-based 00:11:36.09\00:11:39.93 diet, a vegetarian diet, low fat, 00:11:39.96\00:11:42.96 and showed that you can actually reverse heart disease. 00:11:43.00\00:11:46.74 Actually, the plaque buildup on the walls of the arteries 00:11:46.77\00:11:49.90 can actually be reversed to some degree. 00:11:49.94\00:11:51.77 Actually, 82 percent of the patients he put on this diet, 00:11:51.81\00:11:55.01 uh, had reversal of heart disease. 00:11:55.04\00:11:57.58 >>John: And this is important we reiterate, 00:11:57.61\00:11:59.21 because the Bible says our bodies 00:11:59.25\00:12:01.72 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.15 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:12:03.18\00:12:03.99 >>John: You've got people who say, 00:12:04.02\00:12:04.79 well, you gotta die of something, 00:12:04.82\00:12:06.69 as they eat another T-bone steak. 00:12:06.72\00:12:08.52 And my response is, 00:12:08.56\00:12:09.59 yeah, but you don't have to die of everything. 00:12:09.62\00:12:11.86 Now, I spoke to a doctor friend of mine, 00:12:11.89\00:12:14.23 and he told me about some of the frustrations 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.50 that he has working with people. 00:12:16.53\00:12:18.40 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:12:18.43\00:12:19.33 >>John: He said this in a very nice way. 00:12:19.37\00:12:20.77 He said he had a patient there coming to see him, 00:12:20.80\00:12:22.40 and he said to the patient, 00:12:22.44\00:12:23.67 “You know, if you just drank more water, you'd be okay. 00:12:23.71\00:12:28.58 If you just drank more water.” That's a simple change. 00:12:28.61\00:12:30.88 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:12:30.91\00:12:32.15 >>John: And the patient responded by saying, 00:12:32.18\00:12:33.15 so I'm sharing this with you to challenge, 00:12:33.18\00:12:35.65 to challenge people watching right now. 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.42 The patient responded by saying, 00:12:37.45\00:12:38.92 “Doctor, are you going to write me a prescription, 00:12:38.95\00:12:41.89 or am I going to have to go to another doctor 00:12:41.92\00:12:43.86 who will write me a prescription?” 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:12:45.56\00:12:46.43 >>John: So unfortunately, in many case, 00:12:46.46\00:12:48.46 some cases, the remedy is there and it's available, 00:12:48.50\00:12:51.87 but there's a little unwillingness on the part of 00:12:51.90\00:12:54.44 some of us to make even slight changes. 00:12:54.47\00:12:57.04 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Right. 00:12:57.07\00:12:57.97 I've known people, young men, in fact, 00:12:58.01\00:13:00.31 I remember one young man that told me he's taking blood 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.01 pressure medications, he was just like in his thirties, 00:13:03.04\00:13:05.45 blood pressure medication and high cholesterol medication. 00:13:05.48\00:13:08.95 And I told him, um, “Well, what if I work with you and I can 00:13:08.98\00:13:13.69 help you get off those medications by 00:13:13.72\00:13:16.16 following a healthy diet?” And he said, 00:13:16.19\00:13:19.23 “Well, I don't know if I want to make those big drastic 00:13:19.26\00:13:21.43 changes in my lifestyle to do that. 00:13:21.46\00:13:23.10 I'd rather eat the way I want to.” 00:13:23.13\00:13:24.97 And that's where we are today. 00:13:25.00\00:13:26.94 We have to get into what we call lifestyle medicine. 00:13:26.97\00:13:30.11 That's the medicine of the 21st century, 00:13:30.14\00:13:32.47 where doctors are treating their patients with lifestyle, 00:13:32.51\00:13:36.54 instead of all these medications and medical procedures. 00:13:36.58\00:13:39.21 >>John: I want to ask you about the article that I have here. 00:13:39.25\00:13:41.08 It's from the Wall Street Journal. 00:13:41.12\00:13:42.52 I'm not going to drill down too deep into the article. 00:13:42.55\00:13:45.69 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:13:45.72\00:13:46.69 >>John: Headline: “The Questionable Link 00:13:46.72\00:13:49.02 between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease.” 00:13:49.06\00:13:51.76 And I saw this just the other day 00:13:51.79\00:13:54.10 from another perspective in a British newspaper, front page. 00:13:54.13\00:13:57.27 Why we can now eat, bup, bup, bup, 00:13:57.30\00:13:59.63 unhealthy food. 00:13:59.67\00:14:01.14 Why is it that increasingly there's pushback against this, 00:14:01.17\00:14:05.04 and people are reading in reputable newspapers and 00:14:05.07\00:14:07.74 reputable websites, it's okay to eat this bad stuff? 00:14:07.78\00:14:14.15 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, this is one of the frustrations 00:14:14.18\00:14:15.98 most Americans have today, 00:14:16.02\00:14:17.22 ‘cause they read one day you should eat this way, 00:14:17.25\00:14:19.42 and the next day you should go another way. 00:14:19.45\00:14:21.59 And sometimes it happens, in this case, 00:14:21.62\00:14:24.03 for instance, a study has come out where they're saying, 00:14:24.06\00:14:26.80 well, it looks like saturated fat and cholesterol is 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.53 not all that bad for you. 00:14:29.56\00:14:31.27 That is totally contradictory to the, 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.20 the decades of research which, uh, 00:14:34.24\00:14:36.24 substantiates that eating a diet high in saturated fat and 00:14:36.27\00:14:40.34 cholesterol will increase your risk of heart disease. 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.58 You know, people like to hear good news about bad habits. 00:14:44.61\00:14:47.22 When these studies come out, 00:14:47.25\00:14:48.95 they promote them in the news media, 00:14:48.98\00:14:51.25 you'll see on the time, top of Time magazine and so forth. 00:14:51.29\00:14:54.72 But there are a lot of very reputable scientists that are 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.66 questioning the results of this study and the way it was done. 00:14:57.69\00:15:00.86 I think the thing is, we need to look at, 00:15:00.90\00:15:04.00 as opposed to just one study, look at the hundreds, 00:15:04.03\00:15:07.64 thousands of studies that have been done over the years, 00:15:07.67\00:15:10.27 decades, actually, that are saying the opposite. 00:15:10.31\00:15:13.94 >>John: And there might be a couple of other things 00:15:13.98\00:15:15.21 that we could factor in here. 00:15:15.24\00:15:16.21 One, common sense. 00:15:16.24\00:15:17.68 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:15:17.71\00:15:18.95 >>John: Feed a guy junk food, feed his brother healthy food. 00:15:18.98\00:15:22.65 After a couple of years, they're going to look different. 00:15:22.68\00:15:24.65 After a few decades, 00:15:24.69\00:15:26.22 they're going to look very, very different. 00:21:21.91\00:21:23.51 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, there's debate on that. 00:21:23.55\00:21:25.25 You know, I think most experts would say try to get at least 00:21:25.28\00:21:27.85 eight hours of sleep a day, if possible. 00:21:27.88\00:21:30.12 So that's important. 00:21:30.15\00:21:31.25 We need to take some time to get some rest. 00:21:31.29\00:21:33.59 And it's not just sleeping. 00:21:33.62\00:21:34.99 It's taking some time during the week 00:21:35.02\00:21:36.99 to get away from the stresses of daily life. 00:21:37.03\00:21:40.33 And another biblical principle is having a Sabbath day. 00:21:40.36\00:21:44.17 In fact, taking one day in seven is a restful thing spiritually, 00:21:44.20\00:21:48.30 it's important for our spiritual nutrition, 00:21:48.34\00:21:51.37 but it also helps us in having physical, 00:21:51.41\00:21:53.38 mental and spiritual rest at one time. 00:21:53.41\00:21:55.88 >>John: The final T in this thing... 00:21:55.91\00:21:57.35 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:21:57.38\00:21:58.35 >>John: ...T for trust in God. 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.15 How does trust in God benefit a person, 00:22:00.18\00:22:03.59 body, mind and spirit, regarding, 00:22:03.62\00:22:06.05 in terms of their health? 00:22:06.09\00:22:07.69 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, 00:22:07.72\00:22:08.59 it's interesting you brought that up, 00:22:08.62\00:22:09.72 because there's some scientific evidence now to show 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.33 that people who go to church regularly, 00:22:11.36\00:22:13.29 that have a faith, 00:22:13.33\00:22:15.23 that practice and live a faith, 00:22:15.26\00:22:16.97 have lower risk of heart disease. 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.50 They're able to have lower rates of blood pressure, 00:22:19.53\00:22:21.90 better marital satisfaction, generally being able to control 00:22:21.94\00:22:25.94 and handle the stresses of daily living as well. 00:22:25.97\00:22:29.01 >>John: Now, let's look at a biblical example of somebody 00:22:29.04\00:22:31.65 who put these good biblical health principles 00:22:31.68\00:22:33.68 into practice and was blessed spiritually as a result. 00:22:33.72\00:22:37.65 The Israelites had just suffered a, 00:22:37.69\00:22:40.76 a crushing blow. 00:22:40.79\00:22:42.32 Nebuchadnezzar from Babylon had come up to Jerusalem 00:22:42.36\00:22:44.93 and destroyed the place, 00:22:44.96\00:22:46.33 sacked the temple, 00:22:46.36\00:22:47.86 and taken many of the people prisoners, 00:22:47.93\00:22:50.17 marching them across the desert to Babylon. 00:22:50.20\00:22:52.10 It was terrible. 00:22:52.13\00:22:53.10 Daniel was now a slave in Babylon. 00:22:53.13\00:22:57.21 And the Bible says, 00:22:57.24\00:22:58.77 “The king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, 00:22:58.81\00:23:01.94 [the king's food], 00:23:01.98\00:23:03.21 and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, 00:23:03.24\00:23:06.58 that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.” 00:23:06.61\00:23:09.75 So the king said, "Dinner's on me." 00:23:09.78\00:23:13.52 Daniel said, "no way." 00:23:13.56\00:23:15.56 Verse 8: “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not 00:23:15.59\00:23:19.83 defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, 00:23:19.86\00:23:23.16 nor with the wine which he drank: 00:23:23.20\00:23:25.40 therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs 00:23:25.43\00:23:27.50 that he might not defile himself.” 00:23:27.54\00:23:29.87 And as we come down a little further, 00:23:29.90\00:23:32.47 uh, in verse 12, Daniel requested, 00:23:32.51\00:23:35.98 “Prove your servants, I beseech thee, ten days; 00:23:36.01\00:23:39.15 and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” 00:23:39.18\00:23:42.35 Firstly, what's pulse? 00:23:42.38\00:23:43.72 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Some people refer to it as, 00:23:43.75\00:23:45.15 like lentils might be a pulse. 00:23:45.19\00:23:47.19 >>John: All right. 00:23:47.22\00:23:48.02 So it's certainly, uh, plant-based, 00:23:48.06\00:23:50.06 and it's healthy stuff. 00:23:50.09\00:23:51.56 How well did Daniel do as a result of this dietary plan? 00:23:51.59\00:23:55.03 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, they were healthier and stronger 00:23:55.06\00:23:57.33 than the king's men. 00:23:57.37\00:23:58.97 >>John: In fact, if I were to look at this, 00:23:59.00\00:24:01.17 I would find where the Bible says that when the king checked 00:24:01.20\00:24:05.37 them out, he found them to be ten times wiser. 00:24:05.41\00:24:10.55 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:24:10.58\00:24:11.58 >>John: Isn't that remarkable? 00:24:11.61\00:24:12.28 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It is. 00:24:12.31\00:24:12.85 >>John: Ten times wiser. 00:24:12.88\00:24:14.08 Now, I don't know if there was an IQ test 00:24:14.12\00:24:15.55 and they had ten times the IQ points or not, but still, 00:24:15.58\00:24:18.19 the biblical terminology makes it dramatic. 00:24:18.22\00:24:21.52 Daniel and his friends prospered. 00:24:21.56\00:24:23.29 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:24:23.32\00:24:24.39 >>John: If they were just healthier, 00:24:24.43\00:24:26.43 that would be one thing. 00:24:26.46\00:24:28.63 >>John: But I believe it's no coincidence that the very next 00:24:28.66\00:24:31.00 chapter, Daniel, chapter two, finds a spiritual crisis. 00:24:31.03\00:24:35.84 King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream that he can't remember. 00:24:35.87\00:24:38.97 None of the wise men can tell him what the dream was 00:24:39.01\00:24:41.54 or what it means. 00:24:41.58\00:24:43.31 But Daniel and his friends pray to God. 00:24:43.35\00:24:46.35 God gives Daniel the interpretation of the dream. 00:24:46.38\00:24:50.62 I think it's fair to say that if Daniel had not been preserving 00:24:50.65\00:24:53.56 himself physically, God would not have been able to bless him 00:24:53.59\00:24:56.76 so well spiritually. 00:24:56.79\00:24:58.36 Would you agree? 00:24:58.39\00:24:58.99 >>Dr. Westerdahl: I agree. 00:24:59.03\00:24:59.96 >>John: Dr. Westerdahl, 00:25:00.06\00:25:00.93 God's healthcare plan is pretty simple. 00:25:00.96\00:25:03.30 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:25:03.33\00:25:04.37 >>John: No trips to the bookstore necessary 00:25:04.40\00:25:05.83 unless you don't have one of these Bibles. 00:25:05.87\00:25:07.80 It's pretty succinctly explained, 00:25:07.84\00:25:10.57 and the science demonstrates 00:25:10.61\00:25:12.31 that it's effective and it works. 00:25:12.34\00:25:14.61 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it does. 00:25:14.64\00:25:15.91 >>John: What's your advice, in a nutshell, 00:25:15.94\00:25:17.38 to somebody thinking, I need to make some changes? 00:25:17.41\00:25:21.08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: I would say go back to this book. 00:25:21.12\00:25:22.68 Look at the original diet of man that was given to us by God, 00:25:22.72\00:25:26.55 and it'll make some great changes in your life. 00:25:26.59\00:25:30.09 >>John: The same killer diseases which have taken the lives of 00:25:31.06\00:25:33.56 millions and millions of people every year 00:25:33.60\00:25:36.63 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:25:36.67\00:25:38.27 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:25:38.30\00:25:40.80 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:25:40.84\00:25:43.44 Now, you want to avoid them, 00:25:43.47\00:25:44.67 so make sure you get today's free offer, 00:25:44.71\00:25:46.54 “Healthcare God's Way,” 00:25:46.57\00:25:48.94 which I co-wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:25:48.98\00:25:51.58 Get “Healthcare God's Way.” 00:25:51.61\00:25:53.18 Call 1-800-253-3000, 00:25:53.21\00:25:56.15 write to the address on your screen, 00:25:56.18\00:25:58.42 make sure you visit itiswritten.com. 00:25:58.45\00:26:01.46 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:26:01.96\00:26:04.66 is a faith-based ministry, 00:26:04.69\00:26:06.73 and it's your support that makes it possible 00:26:06.76\00:26:08.70 for us to share God's good news with the entire world. 00:26:08.73\00:26:12.83 Your tax-deductible gift 00:26:12.87\00:26:14.17 can be sent to the address on your screen, 00:26:14.20\00:26:16.37 or through our website, itiswritten.com. 00:26:16.40\00:26:20.44 Thank you for your continued prayerful support. 00:26:20.48\00:26:23.04 Our toll-free number is 800-253-3000. 00:26:23.08\00:26:26.28 800-253-3000. 00:26:26.31\00:26:28.68 Our web address is itiswritten.com. 00:26:28.72\00:26:31.62 >>John: Today we've looked at the original diet, 00:26:32.45\00:26:35.26 given to us by God and promised by God 00:26:35.29\00:26:39.53 to be a blessing in our lives. 00:26:39.56\00:26:41.90 Dr. John Westerdahl, thank you so much for joining me today. 00:26:41.93\00:26:44.73 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's great to be with you today, John. 00:26:44.77\00:26:46.50 >>John: It's been a pleasure to have you here. 00:26:46.53\00:26:47.70 You've blessed immensely. 00:26:47.74\00:26:48.50 Let's pray together... 00:26:48.54\00:26:49.37 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Sure. 00:26:49.40\00:26:50.44 >>John: ...and ask God's blessing on all of us, 00:26:50.47\00:26:52.37 particularly those of us who've decided that we're going to make 00:26:52.41\00:26:55.38 some changes in our lives. 00:26:55.41\00:26:56.91 Our Father in Heaven, we thank you today for Jesus, 00:26:56.95\00:27:00.45 the Great Physician. 00:27:00.48\00:27:01.88 We thank you for the Bible, 00:27:01.92\00:27:03.99 the best book on health ever written, 00:27:04.02\00:27:06.29 and for that original diet that, 00:27:06.32\00:27:08.19 when followed has been demonstrated again and again 00:27:08.22\00:27:11.69 not only to make us healthier, 00:27:11.73\00:27:13.73 but happier and contribute to us being holier, more like Jesus. 00:27:13.76\00:27:19.30 Fill us with your Spirit, and guide us in your way. 00:27:19.33\00:27:21.97 I pray that we can live that more abundant life 00:27:22.00\00:27:25.11 promised us by God. 00:27:25.14\00:27:26.88 We thank you today for being with us, 00:27:26.91\00:27:28.31 and we pray, gratefully, 00:27:28.34\00:27:30.35 in Jesus' name. 00:27:30.38\00:27:31.95 Amen. 00:27:31.98\00:27:33.31 >>John: Thank you for joining me today. 00:27:33.35\00:27:34.42 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 00:27:34.45\00:27:36.58 Until then, remember: 00:27:36.62\00:27:38.45 "It is written: 00:27:38.49\00:27:40.02 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:27:40.06\00:27:42.79 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:27:42.82\00:27:47.66 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:27:47.73\00:27:54.70
