The Bible starts with those magnificent words: 00:01:53.84\00:01:58.05 "In the beginning God created." 00:01:58.08\00:02:01.12 The Bible says He began by creating light, 00:02:01.15\00:02:03.28 and on He went through creation week 00:02:03.32\00:02:04.92 making this beautiful world, 00:02:04.95\00:02:06.76 which then was far more beautiful than it is now. 00:02:06.79\00:02:09.72 On the sixth day God created people. 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.99 God made us to inhabit us. 00:02:13.03\00:02:16.23 We were designed to be His dwelling place. 00:02:16.26\00:02:17.90 In fact, He tells us in the Bible 00:02:17.93\00:02:20.10 that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.00 However, there's trouble in the temple. 00:02:23.04\00:02:26.21 Millions of people die prematurely every year 00:02:26.24\00:02:29.48 from lifestyle-related diseases. 00:02:29.51\00:02:31.35 Different choices would result in longer, 00:02:31.38\00:02:34.65 better quality lives in many cases. 00:02:34.68\00:02:37.75 So, what can we do about the trouble in the temple? 00:02:37.79\00:02:40.86 Are there simple changes that we can make 00:02:40.89\00:02:43.53 so that we'd be able to live longer, healthier lives? 00:02:43.56\00:02:45.99 Now, thankfully, there are. 00:02:46.03\00:02:48.53 I spoke with Dr. Brian Schwartz, a cardiologist in Kettering, 00:02:48.56\00:02:51.90 Ohio, and asked him how we could live longer and avoid disease, 00:02:51.93\00:02:56.54 especially heart disease. 00:02:56.57\00:02:58.31 ¤[Music] 00:02:58.34\00:03:04.31 >>John: What else can we say to people who are looking 00:03:04.35\00:03:05.81 to do something about their heart health? 00:03:05.85\00:03:08.62 >>Dr. Brian Schwartz: Yeah, so if you are a sedentary person, 00:03:08.65\00:03:10.82 you really haven't exercised much, 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.19 then even starting the basic level of exercise, 00:03:13.22\00:03:16.39 just simply going out and walking. 00:03:16.42\00:03:18.69 Walking is one of the healthiest things you can do 00:03:18.73\00:03:20.66 for your heart, but you need to get in about 20 minutes 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.76 a minimum of three days a week to get a benefit. 00:03:22.80\00:03:24.97 >>John: That's not too hard. 00:03:25.00\00:03:26.20 I'd like to come at this from a slightly different angle, 00:03:26.23\00:03:29.67 'cause some people say, "I know I'm overweight. 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.44 I know, therefore, that my risk factors are a little high," 00:03:32.47\00:03:37.61 but the mountain just seems so high. 00:03:37.65\00:03:39.38 Now, you're making it sound 00:03:39.41\00:03:41.25 like from an exercise point of view it's not undoable. 00:03:41.28\00:03:44.49 20 minutes walking, I mean does somebody have to go 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.29 buy some $200 shoes, and join a gym, and run everyday? 00:03:46.32\00:03:51.53 Some guy's watching us, he says, man I need to lose 185 pounds. 00:03:51.56\00:03:56.30 And it just seems like, too big a proposition. 00:03:56.33\00:04:01.07 Encourage that person. 00:04:01.10\00:04:02.17 >>Dr. Schwartz: Yea, so absolutely. 00:04:02.20\00:04:03.27 It doesn't matter what type of exercise you do, 00:04:03.30\00:04:05.71 there must be something that you take an interest in. 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.68 Walking is one of the very simplest things. 00:04:08.71\00:04:10.65 It doesn't require expensive equipment; 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.55 it doesn't require a gym membership. 00:04:12.58\00:04:14.52 If you've got sleet and rain and snow, 00:04:14.55\00:04:18.09 you can go walk at a local mall, 00:04:18.12\00:04:19.82 but you can get out and walk for just 20 or 30 minutes. 00:04:19.85\00:04:22.32 Now, ideally we'd like you to walk for at least 30 minutes, 00:04:22.36\00:04:24.99 five days a week. 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.29 That seems to give the best benefit to the heart. 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.53 >>John: But you're saying, start somewhere. 00:04:28.56\00:04:29.86 >>Dr. Schwartz: A minimum of 20 minutes, three days a week, 00:04:29.90\00:04:31.80 still gives you a great benefit to your heart. 00:04:31.83\00:04:34.50 And also for people that are thinking, 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.04 "you know what I'm 100 pounds overweight, 00:04:36.07\00:04:37.54 I can't possibly get that all down." 00:04:37.57\00:04:39.74 Just losing 20 pounds will often drop the blood pressure by about 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.98 10 points and drop the bad cholesterol by about 10 points. 00:04:43.01\00:04:46.82 Just losing 20 pounds may drop your risk of a heart attack 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.85 by nearly half, just by getting some of the weight down. 00:04:49.88\00:04:52.95 You don't even have to get to the ideal range. 00:04:52.99\00:04:55.52 So, just starting to do some of these things. 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.33 I myself am a vegetarian. 00:04:58.36\00:05:00.43 I tell my patients, 00:05:00.46\00:05:01.26 I don't expect you to do everything I do, 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.00 but the closer you get to doing that, 00:05:03.03\00:05:04.73 the better off you're gonna be. 00:05:04.77\00:05:06.10 >>John: Is meat really that bad? 00:05:06.13\00:05:08.00 I mean, this is America, man. 00:05:08.04\00:05:10.17 We were raised killing animals and eating them. 00:05:10.21\00:05:12.64 >>Dr. Schwartz: Exactly right. 00:05:12.67\00:05:13.64 Well, we are learning that there are all kinds 00:05:13.68\00:05:16.81 of consequences to eating meat. 00:05:16.85\00:05:19.25 Environmental impacts, health impacts, 00:05:19.28\00:05:22.18 a lot of the problems with global warming can be traced 00:05:22.22\00:05:24.59 to the factory farms that we do to get all this meat. 00:05:24.62\00:05:28.32 There was an article in "Newsweek" last year showing 00:05:28.36\00:05:30.73 that Americans eat 4 times more meat than the rest of the world. 00:05:30.76\00:05:34.10 You said we grew up eating meat, 00:05:34.13\00:05:37.03 but it didn't used to be that we had meat with every single meal. 00:05:37.07\00:05:39.50 Now, you have meat with breakfast, lunch, and supper. 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.40 Meat has become the staple of our diet. 00:05:42.44\00:05:44.91 Just reducing it to an occasional thing 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.94 would be very healthy. 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.48 Eliminating it altogether, though, would be fantastic. 00:05:49.51\00:05:52.31 Meat is calorie-packed; it's full of saturated fat, 00:05:52.35\00:05:56.62 especially red meats. 00:05:56.65\00:05:58.72 We now know from studies that have been published 00:05:58.75\00:06:02.06 that it increases your risk for certain cancers. 00:06:02.09\00:06:05.06 And when you compare groups of people 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.23 that are vegetarian versus non-vegetarian, 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.36 the vegetarians live 7 up to 10 years longer 00:06:09.40\00:06:12.80 than non-vegetarians. 00:06:12.83\00:06:13.90 >>John: I think that's worth repeating. 00:06:13.94\00:06:15.80 When you compare vegetarians with non-vegetarians, 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.01 the vegetarians are living as long as a decade longer. 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.44 >>Dr. Schwartz: Up to a decade longer. 00:06:20.48\00:06:21.81 >>John: And you didn't say you must get rid of it all. 00:06:21.84\00:06:24.48 You said, if you can't go that far, 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.32 cut it back so it's just an occasional thing. 00:06:27.35\00:06:29.55 >>Dr. Schwartz: Yeah, I try to practice the ideal, 00:06:29.58\00:06:31.92 and even then, there's things that I can do better. 00:06:31.95\00:06:34.36 All of us have to make choices. 00:06:34.39\00:06:35.89 Sometimes I'm on a trip 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.66 and I pick the best choice that I have. 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.16 But as far as possible, I try to set the ideal. 00:06:40.20\00:06:44.07 I don't always get my 4 days a week of exercise in, 00:06:44.10\00:06:47.07 but I try to do that. 00:06:47.10\00:06:49.44 I live in a stressful world just like everybody else. 00:06:49.47\00:06:53.21 I have a very stressful job sometimes. 00:06:53.24\00:06:54.88 I get called in the middle of the night to come in 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.31 and treat patients with a heart disease and heart attacks, 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.81 and I have to just drop everything and run in. 00:06:59.85\00:07:02.28 That interferes with your daily life, 00:07:02.32\00:07:03.89 so we try to do these the best we can. 00:07:03.92\00:07:06.39 We have to start somewhere and work toward it, 00:07:06.42\00:07:09.32 so just giving up red meat is a big goal. 00:07:09.36\00:07:12.16 I tell my patients, if you don't want to be a vegetarian, 00:07:12.19\00:07:14.60 just eating fish or chicken that's been baked or broiled 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.97 is better than eating the red meat. 00:07:17.00\00:07:19.67 But, if you want to give up fish and chicken 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.50 and eat a plant-based diet, that shows the maximal benefit. 00:07:21.54\00:07:24.77 Then there are vegetarians who decide to give up all dairy 00:07:24.81\00:07:28.21 and become vegan vegetarians, 00:07:28.24\00:07:29.81 and that seems to have even a better benefit. 00:07:29.84\00:07:32.05 They live even longer and have less risk of heart disease, 00:07:32.08\00:07:34.98 less risk of cancer, 00:07:35.02\00:07:36.82 less risk of a lot of these diseases that we suffer under. 00:07:36.85\00:07:40.36 >>John: Jesus said He came into the world 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.56 to give us a more abundant life. 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.89 And you can have that by making simple changes 00:07:45.93\00:07:48.00 that bring profound results. 00:07:48.03\00:07:49.93 And with that in mind, I'd like to offer you a special book. 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.30 It's called, “Confidence in Chaos.” 00:07:52.33\00:07:54.60 If you want to get your heart And in a, in a life, in a nation where heart disease 00:09:15.85\00:09:18.92 is the number one killer, this is pretty serious. 00:09:18.95\00:09:21.39 >>Dr. Schwartz: This is huge. 00:09:26.43\00:09:29.26 you definitely want, if you smoke, 00:09:29.30\00:09:30.80 you want to give up smoking, that's huge. 00:09:30.83\00:09:32.77 Do the simple things that you can do. 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.04 There is still a role for medications, in some instances. 00:09:35.07\00:09:37.84 If you have a very high cholesterol 00:09:37.87\00:09:40.98 after going on a careful low-fat diet, 00:09:41.01\00:09:44.18 then it might be reasonable to add a medication. 00:09:44.21\00:09:47.05 What is a concern is, 00:09:47.08\00:09:48.62 I have patients literally come in to my office and say, 00:09:48.65\00:09:51.15 "Hey, I want that pill I saw advertised on TV." 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.96 >>John: What's wrong with that? 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.02 >>Dr. Schwartz: And I say, well what pill cholesterol." 00:09:59.43\00:10:03.16 That seems to be a problem, 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.33 because we're not dealing with the root cause. 00:10:04.37\00:10:06.20 The root cause is partly our genetics 00:10:06.23\00:10:08.64 but largely what we're eating. 00:10:08.67\00:10:10.67 Some of us have missed the boat on preventing heart disease. 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.27 We've already had heart surgery, we've already had a stint, 00:10:13.31\00:10:15.54 we already have angina when we walk. 00:10:15.58\00:10:17.81 But the good news now is, 00:10:17.85\00:10:19.05 by implementing these simple measures, you can reverse that. 00:10:19.08\00:10:22.75 If you've had one heart attack, you can prevent yourself 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.82 from ever having another heart attack. 00:10:25.85\00:10:27.26 If you've had heart surgery, 00:10:27.29\00:10:28.99 by following simple lifestyle changes, you can prevent 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.46 the need for ever having to go through that process again. 00:10:32.49\00:10:36.46 People that are having angina, that need to have heart surgery, 00:10:36.50\00:10:42.84 have been placed in studies with such as Dr. Dean Ornish 00:10:42.87\00:10:46.17 and Dr. in as low as two weeks. 00:10:56.02\00:10:57.59 >>John: Two weeks? 00:10:57.62\00:10:58.82 >>Dr. Schwartz: Dr. Esselstyn has a series of 18 patients 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.22 that were referred for heart surgery 00:11:01.26\00:11:03.06 but were turned down because they were too high-risk 00:11:03.09\00:11:05.39 to go through the surgery. 00:11:05.43\00:11:06.86 So instead, he took those patients, 00:11:06.90\00:11:09.06 he actually brought them to his home where he taught them 00:11:09.10\00:11:11.43 how to eat a plant-based diet 00:11:11.47\00:11:13.47 that emphasizes absolutely no fat. 00:11:13.50\00:11:16.74 In following those patients over the last 15-20 years, 00:11:16.77\00:11:19.91 not a single one of those patients 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.64 that have stuck to that diet has plaques 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.52 in their arteries, but they're not having anginal pains, 00:11:35.56\00:11:38.23 they're not having heart attacks, 00:11:38.26\00:11:40.06 they're following a very careful diet, 00:11:40.10\00:11:41.86 they're exercising, 00:11:41.90\00:11:42.80 but they're healthier now than they were 00:11:42.83\00:11:44.93 when they were first diagnosed. 00:11:44.97\00:11:46.17 >>John: Is there anything dangerous. 00:11:46.20\00:11:49.40 You know, somebody says, 00:11:49.44\00:11:50.41 "Well, I'm going to take some of this on board, 00:11:50.44\00:11:53.74 but maybe my doctor, he or she might advise..." 00:11:53.78\00:11:57.85 you're not talking about anything that has any 00:11:57.88\00:12:01.08 danger attached to it, are you? 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.35 >>Dr. Schwartz: Yes, if you have heart disease and you're getting 00:12:02.38\00:12:05.29 daily anginal chest pains, 00:12:05.32\00:12:06.99 then you should consult with your physician 00:12:07.02\00:12:08.59 before you start a vigorous exercise program. 00:12:08.62\00:12:11.56 If you're diabetic, 00:12:11.59\00:12:12.69 you need to make sure you monitor your blood sugars. 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.76 And if you're even thinking about changing your diet 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.93 and reducing your medications, 00:12:18.97\00:12:20.30 you need to do that in cohort with your physician, 00:12:20.34\00:12:23.54 with his advice or her advice. 00:12:23.57\00:12:27.48 Some people will still need to be on a low level of medication, 00:12:27.51\00:12:30.75 so that has to be coordinated. 00:12:30.78\00:12:32.98 So don't just suddenly say, huh! 00:12:33.01\00:12:34.68 I'm stopping my medication, 00:12:34.72\00:12:35.92 I'm going on this careful plant-based diet 00:12:35.95\00:12:37.89 and I'm giving it all up, 00:12:37.92\00:12:38.99 because you're asking for trouble. 00:12:39.02\00:12:40.49 It took many, many years to get to that point. 00:12:40.52\00:12:44.03 It's a slow process to reverse heart disease once you have it. 00:12:44.06\00:12:47.40 >>John: Number one, nothing dangerous about picking up 00:12:47.40\00:12:49.76 some shoes and taking a 20-minute walk. 00:12:49.80\00:12:52.70 Nothing dangerous about limiting the amount of unhealthy 00:12:52.73\00:12:55.57 food and increasing the amount of healthy food. 00:12:55.60\00:12:57.67 That's healthy and that's responsible. 00:12:57.71\00:13:00.08 >>Dr. Schwartz: Absolutely. 00:13:00.11\00:13:01.14 Unless you're actively having symptoms right now, 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.31 you can get out and start doing those simple measures. 00:13:03.35\00:13:05.38 >>John: However, something, I think this adds appropriate 00:13:05.41\00:13:10.09 balance to any discussion like this. 00:13:10.12\00:13:12.82 Rome wasn't built in a day, 00:13:12.85\00:13:14.06 just like your heart disease didn't happen overnight. 00:13:14.09\00:13:17.43 People do need to take a medium to long-term approach at this. 00:13:17.46\00:13:20.26 If you want to lose 150 pounds and by this time next week 00:13:20.30\00:13:24.10 you're still 150 pounds overweight, 00:13:24.13\00:13:25.70 it's a little too early to get discouraged. 00:13:25.73\00:13:27.74 >>Dr. Schwartz: Exactly. 00:13:27.77\00:13:28.87 Our bodies are actually fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:13:28.90\00:13:31.67 It's amazing how much abuse they can take for many, 00:13:31.71\00:13:34.58 many, many years before these symptoms 00:13:34.61\00:13:36.58 actually start popping up. 00:13:36.61\00:13:38.18 I mentioned that these little fatty streaks occur in children. 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.35 By the time people are in their 20s, 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.15 40-50-60 percent of people have plaque in their arteries to the 00:13:43.18\00:13:47.12 point where half of Americans over the age of 45 have plaque. 00:13:47.16\00:13:51.39 The precursor of heart disease, 00:13:51.43\00:13:52.79 all sitting there in their arteries. 00:13:52.83\00:13:55.13 This all occurs over many, many years: 40-50-60 years, 00:13:55.16\00:13:59.90 so if you're setting off to reverse this process, 00:13:59.93\00:14:03.24 it's also going to be a very gradual process. 00:14:03.27\00:14:05.91 It's not going to all go away. 00:14:05.94\00:14:07.61 But the good news is that even stabilizing the plaque 00:14:07.64\00:14:10.95 that's there, preventing it from getting worse 00:14:10.98\00:14:13.18 and gradually reducing it, 00:14:13.21\00:14:14.85 you're going to start feeling better immediately. 00:14:14.88\00:14:16.85 >>John: Is it fair to say that, in relation to heart disease, 00:14:16.89\00:14:19.79 that there are many people, 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.22 and there'll be many people watching us right now, 00:14:21.26\00:14:24.26 who are much sicker than they realize? 00:14:24.29\00:14:27.00 >>Dr. Schwartz: Oh, it's like a ticking time bomb. 00:14:27.03\00:14:28.93 So, we mentioned earlier that for some it will be too late. 00:14:28.96\00:14:32.57 The first symptom they'll have is a clutch of chest pain and 00:14:32.60\00:14:35.74 they'll collapse on the floor as their heart stops beating. 00:14:35.77\00:14:38.41 >>John: And they die. 00:14:38.44\00:14:39.14 And they didn't know. 00:14:39.17\00:14:40.28 >>Dr. Schwartz: Unless the paramedics can get to them 00:14:40.31\00:14:41.74 within 5 or 6 minutes, somebody does CPR, 00:14:41.78\00:14:44.91 get them to a hospital where that artery 00:14:44.95\00:14:46.41 can be opened back up, they're not going to make it. 00:14:46.45\00:14:48.35 >>John: So there are a lot of people right now 00:14:48.38\00:14:49.75 who are in that condition and they just don't know it. 00:14:49.78\00:14:52.52 And they're not gonna know, they'll never know. 00:14:52.55\00:14:55.62 Their spouse might know, their children might know, 00:14:55.66\00:14:57.49 but they'll never know because, 00:14:57.53\00:14:59.29 >>Dr. Schwartz: Their first symptom might be that they died. 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.96 >>John: This is something that people 00:15:02.00\00:15:02.96 really ought to take seriously. 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.33 >>Dr. Schwartz: Absolutely. 00:15:05.37\00:15:06.60 >>John: Let's talk about this from a spiritual perspective. 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.37 Why does it even matter? 00:15:09.40\00:15:10.41 I mean, in terms of the big picture, 00:15:10.44\00:15:16.78 we are fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.68 In the beginning God. 00:15:18.71\00:15:19.78 On the sixth day He made our grandparents. 00:15:19.81\00:15:24.65 How does this matter spiritually? 00:15:24.69\00:15:26.86 Does this have any connection? 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.79 What connection does this have to our spiritual health? 00:15:28.82\00:15:32.53 >>Dr. Schwartz: Yeah, I think in two ways this relates. 00:15:32.56\00:15:35.03 First of all, we're made in God's image. 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.93 We were designed to reflect His character. 00:15:36.97\00:15:40.27 But we know that our heart, our mind, and our bodies 00:15:40.30\00:15:44.44 is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. 00:15:44.47\00:15:46.11 God wants to communicate with us, 00:15:46.14\00:15:48.31 to dwell with us, and in order to be able to realize that, 00:15:48.34\00:15:52.05 we need a healthy body. 00:15:52.08\00:15:54.15 Particularly the frontal lobes of our brain 00:15:54.18\00:15:56.38 are known to be the spiritual centers of the brain. 00:15:56.42\00:15:59.82 And things like caffeine, like tobacco smoke, 00:15:59.85\00:16:02.42 like lack of exercises, diseases like diabetes and heart disease, 00:16:02.46\00:16:06.63 things that impair the blood flow to that area 00:16:06.66\00:16:08.70 are going to impair our ability to sense spiritual things. 00:16:08.73\00:16:12.93 And, from a further standpoint, 00:16:12.97\00:16:15.37 you can wind up being either somebody 00:16:15.40\00:16:19.87 who can be of service to our fellow man 00:16:19.91\00:16:22.61 and be out there able to help others, 00:16:22.64\00:16:25.25 or you can become a burden: 00:16:25.28\00:16:26.48 a burden to your family, 00:16:26.51\00:16:27.85 a burden to society because you haven't taken care of yourself. 00:16:27.88\00:16:30.55 So, I think it's also a matter a social responsibility. 00:16:30.59\00:16:33.32 >>John: The Bible says that our bodies 00:16:33.36\00:16:35.69 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:35.72\00:16:37.03 >>Dr. Schwartz: That's right. 00:16:37.06\00:16:38.29 >>John: If that's the case, then we should be treating them... 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.30 >>Dr. Schwartz: I believe that God created us in a way that we 00:16:40.33\00:16:43.80 live under the same laws that govern the whole universe. 00:16:43.83\00:16:47.64 The laws of cause and effect. 00:16:47.67\00:16:49.87 So, to a large degree the things that we do now 00:16:49.90\00:16:53.68 might impact what happens to us later. 00:16:53.71\00:16:56.48 Now, granted there are things outside of our control, 00:16:56.51\00:16:58.75 and nothing can happen to us if God does not allow it. 00:16:58.78\00:17:04.02 He ultimately runs the whole universe 00:17:04.05\00:17:07.09 and cares about even the hairs, 00:17:07.12\00:17:08.42 knows the number of the hairs on our head. 00:17:08.46\00:17:10.99 But we make choices, 00:17:11.03\00:17:12.29 and as those choices are outside of God's will, 00:17:12.33\00:17:15.50 He doesn't protect us from the consequences all the time. 00:17:15.53\00:17:18.93 There is a day in which He's going to make all things new, 00:17:18.97\00:17:22.27 and He does forgive us for our wrongful habits; 00:17:22.30\00:17:24.74 He does forgive for our sins; but many times we bear the 00:17:24.77\00:17:27.54 consequences throughout the rest of our life. 00:17:27.58\00:17:29.61 ¤[Music] 00:17:30.58\00:17:32.18 >>Announcer: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:17:32.21\00:17:34.72 "It is written, 00:18:06.51\00:18:12.89 >>John: I get asked every now and then about this: 00:18:13.62\00:18:15.79 We're saved by grace through faith. 00:18:15.82\00:18:17.89 Right. 00:18:17.93\00:18:18.59 But then Revelation 22:12 says, 00:18:18.63\00:18:20.86 "And behold I come quickly, 00:18:20.90\00:18:22.20 and My reward is with Me 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.00 to give every man according as his work shall be." 00:18:24.03\00:18:27.70 Sounds to some people as though this is saying 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.34 we're not saved by God's grace but by our works. 00:18:29.37\00:18:31.41 Now, let's look at this carefully. 00:18:31.44\00:18:33.17 John writes that we are judged by our works, 00:18:33.21\00:18:36.18 not saved by our works. 00:18:36.21\00:18:37.71 The point is that our works, how we live our lives, 00:18:37.75\00:18:41.18 demonstrate or give evidence regarding the reality 00:18:41.22\00:18:43.89 of our profession. 00:18:43.92\00:18:45.49 Anyone at all can claim to be a follower of Jesus, 00:18:45.52\00:18:48.72 but it isn't what you say that really matters. 00:18:48.76\00:18:50.99 It's how you live. 00:18:51.03\00:18:52.53 That's where the evidence really is. 00:18:52.56\00:18:54.40 In the judgment, it isn't just a profession God is looking for. 00:18:54.46\00:18:57.73 He's looking for the real thing. 00:18:57.77\00:19:00.24 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.24 Let's live today by every word. 00:19:02.27\00:19:05.71 ¤[Music] 00:19:06.88\00:19:12.91 >>John: This is a subject that comes close to home for me, 00:19:12.95\00:19:15.08 because my own father had heart disease, 00:19:15.12\00:19:16.92 had open-heart surgery, 00:19:16.95\00:19:18.22 congestive heart failure and died from a heart attack, 00:19:18.25\00:19:21.32 which, if we want to be honest about it, was preventable. 00:19:21.36\00:19:24.83 It was a result of his own lifestyle choices that 00:19:24.86\00:19:27.30 accumulated over many years, and eventually the lights went out 00:19:27.30\00:19:31.27 and Dad was gone, when he could still be here today. 00:19:31.30\00:19:34.27 >>Dr. Schwartz: And that's the tragedy in families, 00:19:34.30\00:19:35.60 is that so many lives are cut short. 00:19:35.64\00:19:39.01 I have patients that come into my office and they'll say, 00:19:39.04\00:19:42.08 "You know, I don't want to give up that part of my diet. 00:19:42.11\00:19:44.78 I don't want to quit smoking, because it's not the quantity 00:19:44.81\00:19:48.62 I'm looking at, it's the quality." 00:19:48.65\00:19:49.95 And in reality they don't realize that those last 00:19:49.98\00:19:53.09 15-20 years, what it's going to be like. 00:19:53.12\00:19:55.06 What is it going to be like to their family, 00:19:55.09\00:19:56.42 to have their life cut short and for the family 00:19:56.46\00:19:58.39 to go on without them, 00:19:58.43\00:19:59.83 when they could have been there for that graduation 00:19:59.86\00:20:01.56 or for that wedding. 00:20:01.60\00:20:02.83 What's it like when they're smothering to death 00:20:02.86\00:20:04.80 with congestive heart failure those last few years. 00:20:04.83\00:20:07.04 Or, when they're trying to smoke a cigarette through a trach, 00:20:07.07\00:20:11.51 because they have such bad lung disease. 00:20:11.54\00:20:15.68 They're trading both the length as well as the quality 00:20:15.71\00:20:18.65 when they choose these habits. 00:20:18.68\00:20:20.35 >>John: Alcohol must factor into heart disease somehow. 00:20:20.38\00:20:23.22 How does it play a part? 00:20:23.25\00:20:24.89 >>Dr. Schwartz: It does. 00:20:24.92\00:20:25.95 There's a lot of mixed reviews in the literature 00:20:25.99\00:20:28.56 about having a glass of wine to help your heart. 00:20:28.59\00:20:31.53 >>John: Oh yes, we've all heard that. 00:20:31.56\00:20:32.86 >>Dr. Schwartz: It gets a lot of press. 00:20:32.89\00:20:34.73 Interestingly, the studies that have most carefully looked at 00:20:34.73\00:20:38.43 that, it turns out it's probably not the 00:20:38.47\00:20:40.77 actual alcohol content in the wine that gives the benefit. 00:20:40.80\00:20:44.44 There's other compounds that come from grapes, 00:20:44.47\00:20:47.18 other compounds in there that might give the benefit 00:20:47.21\00:20:49.48 to the heart and actually help you raise 00:20:49.51\00:20:50.98 those good cholesterols and help be protected. 00:20:51.01\00:20:53.75 Not necessarily the alcohol content. 00:20:53.78\00:20:55.95 So, the thinking is, the benefit in the alcohol, 00:20:55.98\00:20:59.32 and it's red wine that we often hear about, 00:20:59.35\00:21:02.06 what we're hearing is that what's helpful about red wine 00:21:02.09\00:21:04.13 isn't the wine so much as the resveratrol. 00:21:04.16\00:21:06.86 Which you find in grapes and grape juice. 00:21:06.90\00:21:09.20 >>Dr. Schwartz: You can get the same benefit 00:21:09.23\00:21:10.20 from drinking grape juice. 00:21:10.23\00:21:12.13 That's right. 00:21:12.17\00:21:13.20 And alcohol also has a toxic effect on the heart. 00:21:13.23\00:21:16.14 And because alcohol has so many other deleterious effects 00:21:16.17\00:21:19.84 on society, on our livers, on the rest of our health, 00:21:19.87\00:21:23.31 I don't recommend it for my patients. 00:21:23.35\00:21:25.05 >>John: Let's talk for a minute about congestive heart failure, 00:21:25.08\00:21:27.72 which my dad had and so many other people's dads have. 00:21:27.75\00:21:32.99 What is it, and how does it come about? 00:21:33.02\00:21:35.12 >>Dr. Schwartz: Okay. 00:21:35.16\00:21:36.09 So congestive heart failure is a term that's 00:21:36.12\00:21:38.16 thrown around out there, 00:21:38.19\00:21:39.16 but it actually occurs from a cardiomyopathy. 00:21:39.19\00:21:41.93 Something that damages the heart muscle itself. 00:21:41.96\00:21:44.87 So, the heart is about the size of our fist. 00:21:44.90\00:21:47.20 It squeezes the blood. 00:21:47.24\00:21:50.04 In fact, it pumps almost close to a million gallons of blood 00:21:50.07\00:21:54.38 every single year. 00:21:54.41\00:21:55.74 It does an incredible amount of work. 00:21:55.78\00:21:57.98 That little muscle only has about a half-second to rest 00:21:58.01\00:22:02.78 in between every beat. 00:22:02.82\00:22:04.45 But when you get a cardiomyopathy, 00:22:04.49\00:22:06.05 when the muscle itself is affected, 00:22:06.09\00:22:08.29 the heart begins to stretch out. 00:22:08.32\00:22:10.13 It can't squeeze with such vigorous contractions each time. 00:22:10.16\00:22:14.76 That leads to congestive heart failure. 00:22:14.83\00:22:17.10 The symptoms of congestive heart failure are often 00:22:17.13\00:22:19.83 the feeling of smothering. 00:22:19.87\00:22:20.94 I can't catch my breath, I can't lie down flat. 00:22:20.97\00:22:24.17 You start retaining fluid. 00:22:24.21\00:22:25.54 The fluid builds up in your lungs 00:22:25.57\00:22:27.01 and makes your lungs stiff, and that's why you can't breathe. 00:22:27.04\00:22:29.64 Fluid may build up in your legs, and so your legs start to swell. 00:22:29.68\00:22:32.65 You might have to let out a couple of inches on your belt, 00:22:32.68\00:22:35.78 because you're retaining fluid. 00:22:35.82\00:22:37.09 Those are all signs of congestive heart failure. 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.19 >>John: What can be done about it? 00:22:39.22\00:22:41.96 >>Dr. Schwartz: Congestive heart failure can be prevented. 00:22:41.99\00:22:44.99 The number one cause of congestive heart failure 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.00 in the United States is coronary artery disease, 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.50 which we've talked about. 00:22:50.53\00:22:51.70 Around the world there are other causes: 00:22:51.73\00:22:53.30 nutrituional deficiencies, 00:22:53.34\00:22:56.04 viruses can cause a cardiomyopathy or a weak heart. 00:22:56.07\00:22:59.34 Your own body's immune system can react to the heart. 00:22:59.37\00:23:03.11 Parasites can affect the heart, 00:23:03.14\00:23:06.48 and alcohol is actually known to be toxic to the heart as well. 00:23:06.51\00:23:10.45 What can be done? 00:23:10.49\00:23:13.32 If it's due to heart disease, 00:23:13.36\00:23:14.52 by restoring the blood flow to the heart, 00:23:14.56\00:23:17.06 either by reversing the plaque through aggressive 00:23:17.09\00:23:19.43 lifestyle changes that we've talked about. 00:23:19.46\00:23:21.30 By putting in a stent, or going through open heart surgery, 00:23:21.33\00:23:23.93 can help that muscle get more blood 00:23:23.97\00:23:26.33 and it can start to beat more vigorously. 00:23:26.37\00:23:28.64 That can be very helpful. 00:23:28.67\00:23:30.17 For the cases where a virus affects the heart, 00:23:30.21\00:23:32.64 fortunately about half the time that'll get better on it's own. 00:23:32.67\00:23:35.61 Of the other half, 00:23:35.64\00:23:36.54 about a quarter of them will not get better 00:23:36.58\00:23:38.81 and might require a heart transplant. 00:23:38.85\00:23:40.78 And a quarter respond very well to medications. 00:23:40.82\00:23:44.15 >>John: The old says, an ounce of prevention 00:23:44.19\00:23:46.19 is worth a pound of cure, or bigger than a pound of cure. 00:23:46.22\00:23:49.59 >>Dr. Schwartz: Absolutely. 00:23:49.62\00:23:50.49 >>John: I imagine that you would say, 00:23:50.53\00:23:53.60 the best way to treat heart disease 00:23:53.63\00:23:55.53 is to avoid heart disease. 00:23:55.56\00:23:56.97 >>Dr. Schwartz: Absolutely. 00:23:57.00\00:23:58.30 I believe that in my practice 00:23:58.33\00:23:59.83 close to 90 percent of the cases of congestive heart failure, 00:23:59.87\00:24:03.20 90 percent of the cases of coronary artery disease, 00:24:03.24\00:24:07.31 are brought on by our poor choices. 00:24:07.34\00:24:10.68 There are some people that do absolutely everything right. 00:24:10.71\00:24:13.78 We still live in a sinful world where, 00:24:13.82\00:24:15.82 regardless of living well, living healthy, 00:24:15.85\00:24:18.42 they can still suffer from heart disease. 00:24:18.45\00:24:20.59 But that's not the average case. 00:24:20.62\00:24:22.82 >>John: Caffeine. 00:24:22.86\00:24:24.36 Let's talk about caffeine 00:24:24.39\00:24:25.59 in relation to the heart of one's health. 00:24:25.63\00:24:27.60 >>Dr. Schwartz: Personally, I don't drink caffeine. 00:24:27.60\00:24:29.90 That puts me in a very small minority of people. 00:24:29.93\00:24:33.84 People feel generally that they're more awake 00:24:33.87\00:24:36.10 and more alert when they drink their cup of coffee 00:24:36.14\00:24:38.47 every morning or have a caffeinated beverage. 00:24:38.51\00:24:40.44 >>John: Well, we have these energy drinks that'll give you 00:24:40.48\00:24:42.91 a jolt of energy for 2-3-4-5 hours. 00:24:42.94\00:24:45.11 And it's just a caffeine blast. 00:24:45.15\00:24:46.51 >>Dr. Schwartz: It's a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. 00:24:46.55\00:24:49.05 Both of those cause an immediate spike, 00:24:49.08\00:24:51.89 but then it tapers off quickly and you're probably actually 00:24:51.92\00:24:55.72 at a lower level of alertness after the fact, 00:24:55.76\00:24:58.76 than when you first took it. 00:24:58.79\00:25:02.46 Because of that, it causes you to want to do another one 00:25:02.50\00:25:05.40 so you can feel better again. 00:25:05.43\00:25:06.63 And so you're constantly in the cycle of feeling like hmm, 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.97 I'm not feeling quite so alert. 00:25:09.00\00:25:10.64 I need to take another caffeinated beverage 00:25:10.67\00:25:12.37 or get another caffeine boost. 00:25:12.41\00:25:13.68 It turns out that, in the studies that I've seen, 00:25:13.71\00:25:17.51 that caffeine does make people feel 00:25:17.55\00:25:21.48 like they're a little bit peppier. 00:25:21.52\00:25:22.82 But after they've been on it chronically, 00:25:22.85\00:25:24.85 you're simply getting back to a normal level of alertness by 00:25:24.89\00:25:28.52 taking the caffeine that you would have had if you'd never 00:25:28.56\00:25:30.76 been on the caffeine in the first place. 00:25:30.79\00:25:32.23 >>John: What does it do to your body that's bad for your body? 00:25:32.26\00:25:34.13 >>Dr. Schwartz: So it's a stimulant. 00:25:34.20\00:25:35.86 It is causing you, and you can feel it if you drink a lot of 00:25:35.90\00:25:38.40 caffeine, you can feel a little bit jittery. 00:25:38.43\00:25:41.00 And because the muscle cells and the heart, 00:25:41.04\00:25:44.77 all of them can become irritable at different times. 00:25:44.81\00:25:47.78 Caffeine stimulates those other cells in the heart, 00:25:47.81\00:25:52.51 besides the natural pace maker, to become irritable. 00:25:52.55\00:25:54.85 And they can take over and trigger faster 00:25:54.88\00:25:56.62 than the natural pace maker. 00:25:56.65\00:25:58.02 When that happens you get a quick little jolt in your chest. 00:25:58.05\00:26:01.36 That's what you feel when you feel a palpitation. 00:26:01.39\00:26:03.32 >>John: So if someone is looking to look after their heart, 00:26:03.36\00:26:06.96 you'd say caffeine's got to go. 00:26:07.00\00:26:09.00 >>Dr. Schwartz: Well, again, it's all about choices. 00:26:09.03\00:26:11.57 So I tell all my patients who drink a lot of caffeine 00:26:11.60\00:26:14.04 that it would be best to limit it to 00:26:14.07\00:26:15.37 not more than one caffeinated beverage. 00:26:15.40\00:26:17.61 But I also tell them again that I don't drink it at all, 00:26:17.64\00:26:19.81 and I think that's the ideal. 00:26:19.84\00:26:21.01 >>John: Brian, thanks. 00:26:21.04\00:26:22.91 I really appreciate your taking the time today. 00:26:22.94\00:26:24.81 It's been a great blessing; you've helped a great deal and 00:26:24.85\00:26:27.75 you've given us a lot to think about. 00:26:27.78\00:26:29.18 Thanks. 00:26:29.22\00:26:30.02 >>Dr. Schwartz: You're very welcome. 00:26:30.05\00:26:31.32 ¤[Music] 00:26:31.35\00:26:32.25 >>John: Jesus said He came into the world 00:26:32.29\00:26:34.09 to give us a
