¤[Theme music]¤ 00:01:30.05\00:01:40.10 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:01:40.10\00:01:47.30 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw. 00:01:49.37\00:01:52.14 Thanks for joining me. 00:01:52.17\00:01:54.11 Go to the Bible and you find that the Word of God 00:01:54.14\00:01:56.31 says a lot about worship, 00:01:56.34\00:01:58.88 unsurprisingly, as the Bible is God's book. 00:01:58.91\00:02:02.45 But look in the book of Psalms and you find God appealing to us 00:02:02.48\00:02:05.59 and saying some, some impressive things. 00:02:05.62\00:02:08.06 Look with me at Psalm 96 and verse 9: 00:02:08.09\00:02:11.03 “O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: 00:02:11.06\00:02:14.10 fear before Him, all the earth.” 00:02:14.13\00:02:17.10 And in Psalm 95 and verse 6, the Bible says, 00:02:17.13\00:02:19.43 “O come, let us worship and bow down: 00:02:19.47\00:02:22.34 let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” 00:02:22.37\00:02:25.54 And so you might think, 00:02:25.57\00:02:26.74 well, yes, of course, 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.01 worship it's the underpinning of our relationship with God. 00:02:28.04\00:02:30.65 It speaks of the way we relate to God as Sovereign, 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.95 as Creator, as Majesty. 00:02:33.98\00:02:36.12 But let's go a little bit further. 00:02:36.15\00:02:38.69 Is worship good for you? 00:02:38.72\00:02:40.02 How does the practice of worship actually affect your life? 00:02:40.06\00:02:45.19 Here to discuss with me the physiology of worship 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.13 is cardiologist Dr. James Marcum, 00:02:48.16\00:02:50.63 who practices with the Chattanooga Heart Institute. 00:02:50.67\00:02:53.30 Dr. Marcum, thanks for joining me. 00:02:53.34\00:02:54.64 >>Dr. Marcum: My pleasure, John. 00:02:54.67\00:02:55.97 And this excites me more than anything else, 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.47 because when a patient comes in 00:02:58.51\00:03:00.58 and has a lot of medical problems, 00:03:00.61\00:03:03.04 sometimes they're on lots of pills. 00:03:03.08\00:03:05.71 And these pills have side effects, 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.48 and they cost money. 00:03:07.52\00:03:08.68 But when you start talking about things that they can do 00:03:08.72\00:03:11.52 to help improve their body, 00:03:11.55\00:03:12.95 both short term and for eternity, 00:03:12.99\00:03:16.62 and you bring up worship, they, 00:03:16.66\00:03:18.56 they sort of shake their heads at first. 00:03:18.59\00:03:20.20 They say, “No, how can that help me?” 00:03:20.23\00:03:21.86 >>John: So, so that's the question. 00:03:21.90\00:03:23.16 How can worship, you're saying, actually benefit your health? 00:03:23.20\00:03:27.70 >>Dr. Marcum: Yes, worship is actually a prescription. 00:03:27.74\00:03:31.21 And I have to show the evidence behind it, 00:03:31.24\00:03:33.78 and they have to start doing it. 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.24 But now we have studies that others have done, 00:03:35.28\00:03:38.28 even our ministries working on studies that show 00:03:38.31\00:03:40.52 how people that worship the true God 00:03:40.55\00:03:42.68 have physiologic benefits on our own genetics. 00:03:42.72\00:03:46.69 >>John: So how does that work? 00:03:46.72\00:03:47.86 What you're saying is, this is a pretty big statement, 00:03:47.89\00:03:51.33 that worship affects one's genes. 00:03:51.36\00:03:55.36 >>Dr. Marcum: Yes. That's what we're saying. 00:03:55.40\00:03:56.46 >>John: You're saying that. 00:03:56.50\00:03:57.47 >>Dr. Marcum: And if you go back a few years ago, 00:03:57.50\00:03:58.57 we haven't always been able to say this. 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.60 We didn't have the technology. 00:04:00.64\00:04:02.97 But a few years ago, um, Francis Collins, 00:04:03.00\00:04:05.71 who's now at the National Institute of Health, 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.08 he sequenced our DNA. 00:04:08.11\00:04:10.08 >>John: Sure. 00:04:10.11\00:04:11.31 >>Dr. Marcum: Now, what that means is he looked at the DNA, 00:04:11.35\00:04:12.95 and he wrote a book called “The Language of God.” 00:04:12.98\00:04:15.98 He thought this DNA was the language of God, 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.39 because this is how we express ourselves. 00:04:18.42\00:04:21.36 Um, this is how we turn things on and off. 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.73 And if you think of the DNA like a hardware of a computer, 00:04:23.76\00:04:28.23 you know, this is what we're born with. 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.10 And unfortunately, each one of us, me included, 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.27 is born with bad genes. 00:04:33.30\00:04:34.77 >>John: Sure. 00:04:34.80\00:04:35.47 >>Dr. Marcum: We have bad genes. 00:04:35.50\00:04:36.24 And these have been passed down. 00:04:36.27\00:04:37.51 And sooner or later, different things that we do to these genes 00:04:37.54\00:04:41.41 causes them to malfunction or mutate. 00:04:41.44\00:04:44.48 In fact, we have telomeres that sometimes get shorter, 00:04:44.51\00:04:47.25 and they damage our DNA. 00:04:47.28\00:04:48.92 When our DNA is damaged, guess what happens. 00:04:48.95\00:04:52.39 A mutation happens. 00:04:52.42\00:04:53.82 Then we have a malfunction. 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.66 And sooner or later, if enough of these happen, 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.56 we have a symptom. 00:04:57.59\00:04:59.53 And modern medicine reaches to treat the symptoms, 00:04:59.56\00:05:02.23 and we do that very effectively sometimes, 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.17 but we don't get at the cause of our bad genes. 00:05:04.20\00:05:07.30 >>John: So explain to me, explain to us, what's in DNA? 00:05:07.34\00:05:13.27 Deoxyribonucleic acid. 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.14 We know that. 00:05:15.18\00:05:16.18 But what is it, and how does your DNA 00:05:16.21\00:05:18.65 express itself or affect one's day-to-day life? 00:05:18.68\00:05:21.82 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah. 00:05:21.85\00:05:22.72 >>John: I know many people are saying, 00:05:22.75\00:05:23.95 “I know that already, John.” But for those who don't. 00:05:23.99\00:05:25.52 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, this is the core of who we are. 00:05:25.55\00:05:27.99 It's our template. 00:05:28.02\00:05:29.09 It decides everything. 00:05:29.12\00:05:30.56 For instance, when we're talking here, 00:05:30.59\00:05:32.29 the DNA is actually making proteins, 00:05:32.33\00:05:35.33 messenger RNA, 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.63 different things that is affecting enzyme systems, 00:05:36.67\00:05:39.00 that's affecting the way you think, 00:05:39.03\00:05:40.67 the way you move, what makes your heart beating. 00:05:40.70\00:05:42.94 The DNA is at the core of everything. 00:05:42.97\00:05:45.64 So when something malfunctions 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.38 at the very core molecular basis, we look at DNA. 00:05:47.41\00:05:51.35 >>John: So tell me now. 00:05:51.38\00:05:52.45 Somebody has a malfunction at the DNA level, 00:05:52.48\00:05:54.98 how might that be expressed? 00:05:55.02\00:05:56.62 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, it's according. 00:05:56.65\00:05:57.95 Some people are born with bad genes, 00:05:57.99\00:05:59.95 and we have, um, genetic diseases. 00:06:00.06\00:06:02.42 Um, and we see that quite a bit, you know, 00:06:02.46\00:06:04.36 um Tay-Sachs disease and different disease 00:06:04.39\00:06:06.90 that's passed down from generation to generations. 00:06:06.93\00:06:09.50 Those are genes that have been affected that we can't 00:06:09.53\00:06:12.17 do anything about. 00:06:12.20\00:06:13.57 Now, sometimes gene mutations 00:06:13.60\00:06:15.44 are because of the different things we do. 00:06:15.47\00:06:17.21 Let's say you smoke a lot and you have a genetic defect 00:06:17.24\00:06:21.11 that predisposes you to cancer, and you smoke. 00:06:21.14\00:06:24.11 Well, that puts stress on those genes, 00:06:24.15\00:06:25.91 and those genes might malfunction sooner. 00:06:25.95\00:06:28.68 >>John: And the result might be cancer, 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.62 lung cancer. 00:06:30.65\00:06:31.35 >>Dr. Marcum: That's correct. 00:06:31.39\00:06:32.52 For instance, let's say everyone in the Bradshaw family 00:06:32.55\00:06:35.22 became hard of hearing at age 60. Ok. 00:06:35.26\00:06:38.06 >>John: What was that? 00:06:38.09\00:06:38.99 >>Dr. Marcum: Uh, yeah [laughs]. 00:06:39.03\00:06:40.33 Became hard of hearing at age 60. 00:06:40.36\00:06:41.96 And I yelled in your ear every single day. 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.67 I'm yelling and screaming in your ear every day. 00:06:44.70\00:06:47.37 Well, that puts stress on those genes, 00:06:47.40\00:06:49.60 which is the stress of the epigenetics, 00:06:49.64\00:06:51.81 the things that influences your hardware, 00:06:51.84\00:06:53.91 the software, and those genes might wear out sooner. 00:06:53.94\00:06:57.45 So you might have problems at a younger age 00:06:57.48\00:06:59.78 because we put stress on those genes. 00:06:59.81\00:07:02.55 Well, that can happen anywhere in our body. 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.19 If we have a genetic defect, we all do, 00:07:05.22\00:07:07.86 and we put stress on those genes, 00:07:07.89\00:07:09.92 whether it be from smoking or not sleeping well, 00:07:09.96\00:07:12.63 or yelling, or whatever, those genes might malfunction earlier, 00:07:12.66\00:07:16.60 and guess what. 00:07:16.63\00:07:17.83 We have a mutation, it leads to aging and disease processes. 00:07:17.87\00:07:21.20 Because these genes tell our bodies what to do. 00:07:21.24\00:07:24.21 Everything that we do is influenced by these genes. 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.14 >>John: So we can understand the genetic code, our DNA, 00:07:27.18\00:07:30.38 as a little bit like the program that makes the computer run, 00:07:30.41\00:07:33.72 and we all know if you get a glitch in the program, 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.85 then it's just not gonna work, 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.75 and eventually things crash. 00:07:38.79\00:07:40.46 >>Dr. Marcum: Exactly. 00:07:40.49\00:07:41.36 >>John: So it's like that. 00:07:41.39\00:07:42.26 >>Dr. Marcum: That's exactly right. 00:07:42.29\00:07:43.16 >>John: So we can, what? 00:07:43.19\00:07:45.13 >>Dr. Marcum: Influence. 00:07:45.16\00:07:46.43 >>John: We can influence, we can influence? 00:07:46.46\00:07:47.93 >>Dr. Marcum: We can influence our hardware 00:07:47.96\00:07:49.40 by these software, these things that we do. 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.43 >>John: Okay. 00:07:52.47\00:07:53.37 >>Dr. Marcum: Um, for instance, if you, 00:07:53.40\00:07:54.44 if you don't smoke, 00:07:54.47\00:07:55.60 that helps those genes that might have cancer in them. 00:07:55.64\00:07:58.07 >>John: Okay. 00:07:58.11\00:07:59.24 >>Dr. Marcum: Um, if we do other things that might keep 00:07:59.27\00:08:00.41 the genes from getting older quicker. 00:08:00.44\00:08:02.68 And that might be good nutrition, 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.35 or even drinking water, or getting enough rest. 00:08:04.38\00:08:06.82 Well, we're now understanding that worship 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.85 affects epigenetics, what affects our genes. 00:08:09.88\00:08:12.72 Keeps us from getting older. 00:08:12.75\00:08:14.16 There's now some data on this that shows that worship, 00:08:14.19\00:08:17.63 when we worship God, 00:08:17.66\00:08:19.13 when we worship the best we can, 00:08:19.16\00:08:20.76 that affects our genes. 00:08:20.80\00:08:22.63 And when we don't worship, that tends, 00:08:22.66\00:08:25.13 can put stress on our body. 00:08:25.17\00:08:26.97 You know, we look for something to worship. 00:08:27.00\00:08:29.14 If we worship the wrong things, it puts stress on us as well. 00:08:29.17\00:08:32.51 >>John: So, so we have a genetic makeup. 00:08:32.54\00:08:35.11 >>Dr. Marcum: Um-hmm. 00:08:35.14\00:08:36.28 >>John: It might be that your genes are gonna flip out 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.31 in this way, that way, malfunction, mutate. 00:08:38.35\00:08:40.88 However, there are things that you can do to aid your genes, 00:08:40.92\00:08:46.32 the genetic code, 00:08:46.35\00:08:47.76 to prevent certain things from happening that are negative, 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.99 or the cause positive things to happen that are positive. 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.90 So you can influence your own health 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.33 at the very deepest level. 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.00 And what you're saying is that worship actually has 00:08:58.03\00:09:01.97 a measurable, material impact on one's genes. 00:09:02.00\00:09:06.14 >>John: That's correct. 00:09:06.17\00:09:07.11 And we're just now beginning, 00:09:07.14\00:09:08.48 in some of the science that's been done, to look at this. 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.78 One of the original studies by Dr. Newberg 00:09:11.81\00:09:14.52 at the University of Pennsylvania, 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.12 he looked at people's brains, 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.42 and he had people just worship for a short period of time, 00:09:18.45\00:09:21.92 and he saw that their brain, the prefrontal cortex, 00:09:21.96\00:09:24.76 the part that we have that separates us from animals, 00:09:24.79\00:09:27.40 actually got bigger. 00:09:27.40\00:09:28.60 The anterior cingulate cortex part of the brain 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.57 grew and got bigger just from worship. 00:09:31.60\00:09:33.80 And he also found out that when people worship 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.04 for short periods of time, the stress part of the brain, 00:09:36.07\00:09:38.97 the part we share with animals, the part that damages us, 00:09:39.01\00:09:42.44 you know, we don't like these chronic stress, 00:09:42.48\00:09:44.18 the part that just says, I want to stay alive and live, 00:09:44.21\00:09:46.85 that turns on the chemicals like adrenaline, 00:09:46.88\00:09:49.58 cortisol, inflammation that causes these epigenetic problems 00:09:49.62\00:09:53.86 that causes us to age and the DNA to get worse, 00:09:53.89\00:09:56.56 those were turned down in people that worship. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.56 So he did that study, but studies have been, 00:09:59.59\00:10:01.80 even done further says, well, that's, 00:10:01.83\00:10:04.20 we see a structural change, 00:10:04.23\00:10:05.63 but what's happening in the molecules, the very DNA. 00:10:05.67\00:10:09.64 And now we have some studies, you know, 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.34 back at [Dusek], at Harvard, Benson's Lab, 00:10:11.37\00:10:14.74 they looked at different things that people do to relax, 00:10:14.78\00:10:17.18 and people that relax, repetitive prayer. 00:10:17.21\00:10:20.48 They've looked at people with yoga, 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.32 those type of things, including worship. 00:10:22.35\00:10:25.65 Those things turn on and off genes. 00:10:25.69\00:10:28.49 And when those genes, the stress genes are turned off, 00:10:28.52\00:10:31.13 people do better. 00:10:31.16\00:10:32.56 They, if you think about it, when stresses turn off, 00:10:32.59\00:10:35.33 every chronic disease will improve. 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.37 Slows down aging, slows down inflammation, 00:10:37.40\00:10:40.90 lowers blood pressure, improves immune systems. 00:10:40.94\00:10:43.84 So now, what I'm trying to, to do right now is, 00:10:43.87\00:10:47.18 well, they've looked at different types of worship. 00:10:47.21\00:10:49.54 You know, there's many different types of worship. 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.55 There's yoga, there's medication, 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.18 there's repetitive prayer, 00:10:53.21\00:10:54.65 there's different types of worship. 00:10:54.68\00:10:55.98 Well, what would these genes look like 00:10:56.02\00:10:58.12 if we do biblical worship. 00:10:58.15\00:11:00.76 Ten minutes of biblical worship. 00:11:00.79\00:11:02.09 Let's look at the genes. 00:11:02.12\00:11:03.36 And wouldn't it be great, 00:11:03.39\00:11:04.49 we're working on publishing a study that says 00:11:04.53\00:11:06.09 when someone participates in biblical worship, 00:11:06.13\00:11:09.10 this lowers the risk of chronic disease, 00:11:09.13\00:11:11.40 slows down aging, lowers the risk of heart attack, 00:11:11.43\00:11:14.47 infections, diabetes, hypertension, 00:11:14.50\00:11:16.84 all of these things. 00:11:16.87\00:11:17.87 Well, we have the preliminary workup that says 00:11:17.91\00:11:20.21 we know what the answer's gonna to be. 00:11:20.24\00:11:21.91 Now we have to do the study. 00:11:21.94\00:11:23.01 >>John: Fascinating. 00:11:23.04\00:11:24.65 Worship, good for you. 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.21 Worship, good for your genes. 00:11:26.25\00:11:29.02 Worship, able to influence your health 00:11:29.05\00:11:31.45 in a measurable and material way. 00:11:31.49\00:11:33.42 You want to know more about this. 00:11:33.46\00:11:34.92 We'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:13:55.83\00:13:58.73 What's unique about the worship of God? 00:13:58.77\00:14:01.24 >>Dr. Marcum: That is an excellent question. 00:14:01.27\00:14:02.94 That's why we need more research on this specifically. 00:14:02.97\00:14:06.64 You know, ‘cause we know what the results are going to be. 00:14:06.68\00:14:09.78 We know that as we worship the true God, 00:14:09.81\00:14:12.18 biblical worship, um, 00:14:12.21\00:14:13.95 we are going to have more positive changes 00:14:13.98\00:14:16.58 than we would doing anything else. 00:14:16.62\00:14:18.09 Okay? 00:14:18.12\00:14:19.35 The other studies have shown all sorts of things that imply this, 00:14:19.39\00:14:22.36 but now we really have to have the biblical worship study 00:14:22.39\00:14:25.86 looking at people's DNA directly. 00:14:25.89\00:14:28.83 Um, we have some indirect studies by Newberg, 00:14:28.86\00:14:31.63 so as our brain gets larger when we worship God. 00:14:31.67\00:14:35.34 But he decided what worship looked like. 00:14:35.37\00:14:37.91 But that's a great question. 00:14:37.94\00:14:39.34 What does worship look like in this end stage? 00:14:39.37\00:14:42.61 You know, what does worship look like? 00:14:42.64\00:14:43.98 Some people might worship by studying the Word, 00:14:44.01\00:14:47.15 by praying. 00:14:47.18\00:14:48.25 Some people might worship by serving others, 00:14:48.28\00:14:51.22 by praising, by thanking. 00:14:51.25\00:14:53.05 There's many ways of worship, 00:14:53.09\00:14:55.32 including living a life of worship. 00:14:55.36\00:14:57.76 So, but now we have the technology, 00:14:57.79\00:14:59.59 John, to do these studies to show, 00:14:59.63\00:15:02.30 you know, well, 00:15:02.33\00:15:03.40 worship for you might look like this on your DNA. 00:15:03.43\00:15:06.50 But worship like this might help your DNA even more. 00:15:06.53\00:15:10.14 You know, when you serve, you get this type of benefit, 00:15:10.17\00:15:12.74 health benefit. 00:15:12.77\00:15:13.71 But when you serve, pray and study the Word, 00:15:13.74\00:15:16.98 you might get this type of benefit. 00:15:17.01\00:15:19.11 We're now starting to have the technology to show 00:15:19.15\00:15:21.98 those type of physiologic changes. 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.75 >>John: So worship is measurably good for a person, 00:15:23.79\00:15:26.92 which means that those who do not live a life of worship, 00:15:26.96\00:15:29.86 people who are choosing to live disconnected from God, 00:15:29.89\00:15:32.39 are missing out not only spiritually, 00:15:32.43\00:15:34.56 but physically, and therefore spiritually as well, 00:15:34.60\00:15:38.20 as one impacts the other. 00:15:38.23\00:15:39.57 So a patient comes to you, and you suggest to the patient, 00:15:39.60\00:15:42.24 okay, we're going to walk down this road. 00:15:42.27\00:15:45.74 How would look in practice in a person's life? 00:15:45.77\00:15:47.84 They come to your practice; they speak to you; you maybe, 00:15:47.88\00:15:50.18 the conversation takes on this bent. 00:15:50.21\00:15:53.45 How does that play out in someone's life? 00:15:53.48\00:15:54.78 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, you know, I would, 00:15:54.82\00:15:56.12 I would start by giving them evidence. 00:15:56.15\00:15:58.25 I said, “Listen, you know, you don't feel so good. 00:15:58.29\00:16:00.56 You had a bypass surgery, you know. 00:16:00.59\00:16:02.92 Things were bad. 00:16:02.96\00:16:03.86 But you've done all of these things.” 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.53 But they always say, 00:16:05.56\00:16:06.70 “Well, you know, I have a hard time giving up this.” 00:16:06.73\00:16:10.17 >>John: Sure. 00:16:10.20\00:16:11.43 >>Dr. Marcum: You know, “I have a hard time walking every day. 00:16:11.47\00:16:12.13 I have a hard time eating right. 00:16:12.17\00:16:13.50 I have a hard time thinking right. 00:16:13.54\00:16:14.87 All these stressors that are turning on these bad genes, 00:16:14.90\00:16:18.31 I'm having problems with.” 00:16:18.34\00:16:19.74 I said, “Well, you know, 00:16:19.77\00:16:21.34 I have problems with that myself, you know. 00:16:21.38\00:16:23.58 Would you like to, to hear about a way scientifically proven 00:16:23.61\00:16:27.18 that we can help our genes and help give us the power, 00:16:27.22\00:16:30.49 one step at a time, to, to do better?” 00:16:30.52\00:16:33.86 I said, “Well,” I said, “ask Christ to come into your life. 00:16:33.89\00:16:37.06 Ask Him to give you the power.” 00:16:37.09\00:16:38.89 And I point them back to Matthew 11:28, 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.90 “Come unto me, worship me, and I will give you rest.” 00:16:41.93\00:16:46.00 Would you like that gift today? 00:16:46.03\00:16:48.20 Is there any reason you can't enter into 00:16:48.24\00:16:50.51 a relationship worship? 00:16:50.54\00:16:51.81 Because that's how our genes were designed to be. 00:16:51.84\00:16:54.11 >>John: Um-hmm. 00:16:54.14\00:16:55.34 >>Dr. Marcum: And as we get back to our original template, 00:16:55.38\00:16:57.75 everything works better. 00:16:57.78\00:16:58.75 Aging slows down. 00:16:58.78\00:17:00.35 It also, but more importantly, 00:17:00.38\00:17:02.05 it gives us the power to make these changes. 00:17:02.08\00:17:04.72 And I give them examples of patients, 00:17:04.75\00:17:06.76 and I said, “Listen, we're working on studies 00:17:06.79\00:17:08.39 to prove this at higher levels. 00:17:08.42\00:17:09.79 But why don't you just ask Christ into your life today, 00:17:09.82\00:17:12.79 give you the power to do one thing. 00:17:12.83\00:17:14.56 What would that be? 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.20 And come into a worshipful state.” 00:17:16.23\00:17:17.60 And I give them a short prayer and a short worship study. 00:17:17.63\00:17:20.87 If they've never worked before, I said, 00:17:20.90\00:17:22.47 “Here's 10 minutes of what worship looks like. 00:17:22.50\00:17:24.94 Would you be willing to do that every day?” 00:17:24.97\00:17:27.11 And so, “Oh, yeah, I'll give that a try.” 00:17:27.14\00:17:28.51 And I said, “In addition, let's pick one thing that's stressing 00:17:28.54\00:17:32.28 your life out, that's hurting your genes, 00:17:32.31\00:17:34.72 that we can make a change on.” 00:17:34.75\00:17:36.12 And it might be something simple like drinking water, 00:17:36.15\00:17:39.02 or resting, or not losing your temper. 00:17:39.05\00:17:41.52 Or it might be eating better or giving up cigarettes. 00:17:41.56\00:17:44.29 Just one thing. 00:17:44.33\00:17:45.53 And when they do this, when they actually have that power, 00:17:45.56\00:17:49.36 God enters their life, 00:17:49.40\00:17:50.57 so when they're in this state of worship, 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.50 the Holy Spirit comes and is working on this. 00:17:52.53\00:17:54.64 Goes into the hippocampus part of the brain. 00:17:54.67\00:17:56.74 So it's working all day long in them. 00:17:56.77\00:17:58.67 So they have to decide what they want to do with this worship. 00:17:58.71\00:18:01.94 So this worship starts in the morning, 00:18:01.98\00:18:03.61 and it goes all day long, 00:18:03.65\00:18:04.88 so it's sort of living in a state of worship. 00:18:04.91\00:18:07.08 And then they start giving power, and they notice, 00:18:07.12\00:18:09.12 “You know what? 00:18:09.15\00:18:10.02 I did, I was able to do this.” 00:18:10.05\00:18:12.19 And then they feel God coming 00:18:12.22\00:18:13.56 into their life, leading them more and more. 00:18:13.59\00:18:15.39 And as they do this, they get very excited. 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.79 And then we move to the next thing. 00:18:17.83\00:18:19.13 Well, would you like to do this? 00:18:19.16\00:18:20.46 Would you like to do that? 00:18:20.50\00:18:21.43 And they start making these powerful changes. 00:18:21.46\00:18:23.57 And as God influences their life, 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.80 gives them the power to make changes, 00:18:25.83\00:18:27.24 they're doing things out of love and not out of obligation. 00:18:27.27\00:18:30.51 They're doing things for the right reasons. 00:18:30.54\00:18:32.14 >>John: You know, it's, I think it's important for us 00:18:32.17\00:18:34.04 to point this out: 00:18:34.08\00:18:34.98 we're not suggesting, if you're sick, 00:18:35.01\00:18:37.05 just worship God and you'll get well. 00:18:37.08\00:18:39.01 This isn't the new wonder drug, the wonder drug of worship. 00:18:39.05\00:18:41.82 But what you're saying is when the heart, 00:18:41.85\00:18:43.99 the mind, is focused on God and connected to God, 00:18:44.02\00:18:47.02 this measurably benefits a person. 00:18:47.06\00:18:49.39 Can people achieve the same physiological results 00:18:49.42\00:18:55.40 without God?
