I'm John Bradshaw. 00:01:49.50\00:01:51.71 Thanks for joining me. 00:01:51.74\00:01:53.24 In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. 00:01:53.27\00:01:57.35 And what was it like back then? 00:01:57.38\00:01:58.51 Well, it was beautiful. 00:01:58.55\00:01:59.65 It was perfect. 00:01:59.68\00:02:02.15 And nobody was sick. 00:02:02.18\00:02:03.85 There were no doctors in the Garden of Eden. 00:02:03.89\00:02:06.55 There were no prescription drugs, 00:02:06.59\00:02:08.49 no medications of any kind. 00:02:08.52\00:02:10.23 There weren't any supplements. 00:02:10.26\00:02:11.56 They were not needed. 00:02:11.59\00:02:14.50 The undertakers, funeral parlors, 00:02:14.56\00:02:17.23 out of business. 00:02:17.27\00:02:18.13 No need. 00:02:18.17\00:02:19.13 Because when God created His first children, 00:02:19.17\00:02:21.90 Adam and Eve, no sickness at all. 00:02:21.94\00:02:24.44 Well, Isaiah wrote in the book of Isaiah 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.64 that we are going to a place where, he said, 00:02:26.68\00:02:28.91 “The inhabitant thereof shall not say, I am sick.” 00:02:28.94\00:02:32.75 And when we read in Third John, 00:02:32.78\00:02:34.55 the little book of Third John, verse 2, 00:02:34.58\00:02:38.09 we read these words: 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.25 “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things 00:02:39.29\00:02:44.39 and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 00:02:44.43\00:02:48.73 That was John's wish for his readers; 00:02:48.76\00:02:50.93 it's God's wish for us today. 00:02:50.97\00:02:55.07 So what's the reality? 00:02:55.10\00:02:56.67 Illness everywhere you turn. 00:02:56.71\00:02:58.61 Healthcare problems, not solutions. 00:02:58.64\00:03:02.61 Healthcare costs blowing out budgets of entire nations. 00:03:02.64\00:03:06.38 People not sure what to do about diseases 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.98 they don't know how to fight. 00:03:09.02\00:03:11.09 Oh my goodness, that was not God's plan. 00:03:11.12\00:03:12.95 To discuss this with me is cardiologist Dr. James Marcum, 00:03:12.99\00:03:15.76 who practices here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.76 Dr. Marcum, thanks for joining me. 00:03:17.79\00:03:19.36 >>Dr. James Marcum: My pleasure. 00:03:19.39\00:03:20.30 And unfortunately, my whole life, 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.26 the last 27 years in practicing cardiology and medicine, 00:03:22.30\00:03:25.63 I see people that are suffering with diseases of all sort. 00:03:25.67\00:03:30.47 >>John: So from a physician's point of view, 00:03:30.51\00:03:32.41 how bad is it? 00:03:32.44\00:03:33.68 >>Dr. Marcum: Oh, well, let's just look at things. 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.88 Over the last 20, 30 years, 00:03:35.91\00:03:37.91 the rates of heart disease keep going up. 00:03:37.95\00:03:41.08 The rates of diabetes keep going up. 00:03:41.12\00:03:43.42 In fact, it's been estimated in the United States, 00:03:43.45\00:03:46.32 by mid-century, 00:03:46.35\00:03:47.32 one in three people will have Type 2 diabetes. 00:03:47.36\00:03:50.59 >>John: One in three. 00:03:50.63\00:03:51.69 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah, one in three. 00:03:51.73\00:03:53.06 The rates of being overweight go up. 00:03:53.09\00:03:55.36 The risk of joint problems go up. 00:03:55.40\00:03:58.20 Um, high blood pressure keeps going up. 00:03:58.23\00:04:01.10 Every year, more and more chronic diseases. 00:04:01.14\00:04:03.67 Cancer rates keep going up. 00:04:03.71\00:04:05.87 Mental health problems keep going up. 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.11 All of these chronic diseases keep increasing, 00:04:08.14\00:04:10.71 and you ask yourself, is modern medicine fixing these problems? 00:04:10.75\00:04:14.48 >>John: Now, this was not God's plan in the beginning. 00:04:14.52\00:04:16.28 God created perfect people with perfect health. 00:04:16.32\00:04:19.35 So over the last 6,000 years, something has gone wrong. 00:04:19.39\00:04:23.49 And you ask the question, 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.59 modern medicine, is it fixing? 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.36 You might even ask the question, 00:04:28.40\00:04:29.53 is in some ways, it harming? 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.33 Though I don't mean to sound subversive. 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.20 So here's what we know. 00:04:33.23\00:04:34.24 God created Adam and Eve. 00:04:34.27\00:04:35.40 Sin entered the picture. 00:04:35.44\00:04:36.74 From then to now, it's been down, down, 00:04:36.77\00:04:38.74 down in terms of our health. 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.01 There have been some upswings. 00:04:40.04\00:04:41.78 You go back a few years, people were shorter, 00:04:41.81\00:04:43.65 people weren't as healthy, people didn't live as long. 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.05 So there've been some improvements. 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.75 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:04:47.78\00:04:48.92 >>John: So here's a question: with the improvements 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.85 that we've had, and I think they're observable in the last, 00:04:50.89\00:04:54.62 I don't know, 50 or 100 years or so, 00:04:54.66\00:04:58.33 why are things still as bad as they are? 00:04:58.36\00:05:01.36 When are the doctors and the scientists going to figure out 00:05:01.40\00:05:03.53 what the magic bullet is for heart disease 00:05:03.57\00:05:06.57 or diabetes or cancer or stroke? 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.10 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah, well, the more I learn, 00:05:09.14\00:05:11.17 the less I know. 00:05:11.21\00:05:12.91 And our body is very, very complicated. 00:05:12.94\00:05:16.14 You know, we think of the trillion cells in our brain, 00:05:16.18\00:05:18.85 the quadrillion connections. 00:05:18.88\00:05:20.22 We know very little about the brain and how the brain 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.68 is affecting our whole body, 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.15 and how it turns on and off genes or genetics. 00:05:24.19\00:05:26.86 We know very little about the bowel, 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.92 the flora in our bowel, all sorts of bacteria. 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.39 There's more activity in our bowels 00:05:31.43\00:05:33.06 that affects our entire body, 00:05:33.09\00:05:34.83 including our cardiovascular health. 00:05:34.86\00:05:37.20 Then our immune systems, you know, 00:05:37.23\00:05:38.97 which fights off these bad boys; we're just now discovering all 00:05:39.00\00:05:42.80 things about our immune system that we never knew before. 00:05:42.84\00:05:45.91 So as time goes on, things get more complicated, 00:05:45.94\00:05:49.41 and yet we did make some major advances, 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.98 especially, you know, antibiotics, 00:05:52.01\00:05:54.15 blood transfusions. 00:05:54.18\00:05:55.42 So we have made some processes, but over the years we've got 00:05:55.45\00:05:58.89 into these chronic diseases, these lifestyle diseases, 00:05:58.92\00:06:02.82 the diseases that we put on ourselves that weren't made, 00:06:02.86\00:06:06.76 designed to have all these stressors on our body, 00:06:06.80\00:06:09.43 which has caused aging and mutations 00:06:09.46\00:06:12.00 and all sorts of bad things to happen. 00:06:12.03\00:06:13.64 >>John: Okay, so this question 00:06:13.67\00:06:14.70 is not meant to skewer the medical system. 00:06:14.74\00:06:17.77 You're a physician, a very, you're a well-educated physician 00:06:17.81\00:06:22.68 operating at a very high level. 00:06:22.71\00:06:23.85 So I don't mean to come after the medical profession. 00:06:23.88\00:06:26.51 But what in the world's going on? 00:06:26.55\00:06:27.85 This is, we're well into the 21st century now, 00:06:27.88\00:06:31.79 and it just seems like things are getting worse. 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.66 So, what, what are the successes, 00:06:34.69\00:06:38.93 the failings, and the limitations of modern medicine? 00:06:38.96\00:06:42.96 >>Dr. Marcum: Yeah. 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.20 Well, modern medicine is great at treating acute problems. 00:06:44.23\00:06:48.37 You know, if I'm having a heart attack, 00:06:48.40\00:06:50.61 I want to have a stent. 00:06:50.64\00:06:52.11 My heart's going slow; give me a pacemaker. 00:06:52.14\00:06:54.61 If I'm bleeding to death, stop the bleeding; 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.85 give me a blood transfusion. 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.11 So it's great at treating emergencies. 00:06:58.15\00:07:00.95 It's also improving at treating chronic genetic problems. 00:07:00.98\00:07:05.45 Let's say you were born with a gene that's bad. 00:07:05.49\00:07:08.06 Well, we're now studying the genes and we're finding ways 00:07:08.09\00:07:10.53 that we can do things to help the genes maybe not express 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.86 these things that would cause problems down the road. 00:07:13.90\00:07:16.83 So we're making some inroads to that. 00:07:16.87\00:07:19.50 But where we haven't made much inroads at all 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.67 is our lifestyles, 00:07:22.70\00:07:24.27 the things that we're doing that's changing our very genes, 00:07:24.31\00:07:28.38 that's accelerating aging, 00:07:28.41\00:07:29.98 that's causing all this chronic disease. 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.45 And unfortunately, we're looking more toward what we can do. 00:07:32.48\00:07:36.99 Here, let's have a pill. 00:07:37.02\00:07:38.19 Let's have a quick fix. 00:07:38.22\00:07:39.75 We're not looking toward the real answers 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.82 to this complicated system, and that's looking at a Creator. 00:07:41.86\00:07:45.53 And I tell people, John, 00:07:45.56\00:07:46.83 that when you're looking at modern medicine, 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.43 there's ditches that we fall in. 00:07:49.46\00:07:51.17 You know, there's the ditches of thinking 00:07:51.20\00:07:52.60 that modern medicine can fix everything. 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.34 >>John: Sure. 00:07:54.37\00:07:55.50 >>Dr. Marcum: There's another ditch on the other side 00:07:55.54\00:07:56.54 of the road that says lifestyle. 00:07:56.57\00:07:57.91 That's all we need is lifestyle. 00:07:57.94\00:07:59.41 >>John: And that modern medicine can't really fix anything. 00:07:59.44\00:08:01.51 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:08:01.54\00:08:02.24 >>John: And that's not true. 00:08:02.28\00:08:02.91 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:08:02.94\00:08:04.15 And the true path is us to understand that when we're sick, 00:08:04.18\00:08:07.65 which we all are genetically, 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.45 we need a Saviour that can rescue us 00:08:09.48\00:08:12.39 from this bad genetics that we've come on. 00:08:12.42\00:08:15.46 >>John: Now, let's get into this more after the break. 00:08:15.49\00:08:17.99 But before the break, let me ask you this: 00:08:18.03\00:08:19.96 So I think what you've identified 00:08:20.00\00:08:22.66 is that medicine is doing its best. 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.30 >>Dr. Marcum: Um-hmm. 00:08:24.33\00:08:25.17 >>John:: Medicine is doing its best, 00:08:25.20\00:08:26.23 and in some areas medicine is doing wonderfully, 00:08:26.27\00:08:29.50 wonderfully. 00:08:29.54\00:08:30.81 But medicine is up against something that 00:08:30.84\00:08:33.11 it seems it can't overcome, 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.04 and that's not so much disease, 00:08:35.08\00:08:36.54 but the lifestyle of the patient. 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.95 >>Dr. Marcum: Yes. 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.02 >>John: I mean, you can't give anything away, 00:08:40.05\00:08:41.18 I know, but you've seen patients that you know full well, 00:08:41.22\00:08:43.32 if only they did A, B and C real simple, 00:08:43.35\00:08:46.22 their lives would trend up, but they just won't do it. 00:08:46.25\00:08:48.72 >>Dr. Marcum: Right. 00:08:48.76\00:08:49.66 >>John: So lifestyle is a major component 00:08:49.69\00:08:52.63 of turning this disease thing around, correct? 00:08:52.66\00:08:54.73 >>Dr. Marcum: For chronic disease, yes. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.10 >>John: For chronic disease. 00:08:56.13\00:08:57.77 >>Dr. Marcum: Diabetes; can reverse that. 00:08:57.80\00:08:59.67 Hypertension; can reverse that. 00:08:59.70\00:09:02.20 Conditions like sleep apnea, heart disease, 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.51 uh, joint problems, mental health. 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.34 These are all potentially lifestyle-related diseases 00:09:07.38\00:09:11.45 that can be turned around. 00:09:11.48\00:09:12.78 >>John: Now, before we go to the break, 00:09:12.81\00:09:14.95 uh, we're not pretending that lifestyle can fix 00:09:14.98\00:09:18.69 everyone in every situation, right? 00:16:41.60\00:16:43.03 We are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” 00:16:43.06\00:16:47.50 David wrote in the Psalms, in Psalm 139. 00:16:47.54\00:16:50.71 Let me ask you a question: why, then, 00:16:50.74\00:16:54.21 is this simple fix not being spoken of more? 00:16:54.24\00:16:57.65 >>Dr. Marcum: Well, if you look at the world we live in, 00:16:57.68\00:17:00.58 is our world designed to worship the true God, 00:17:00.62\00:17:03.99 or worship the false gods of this world?
