I'm John Bradshaw. 00:01:49.77\00:01:52.71 Thanks for joining me today. 00:01:52.74\00:01:54.98 You don't have to go too terribly far, 00:01:55.01\00:01:57.05 read too many web pages or open too many newspapers 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.95 to discover that healthcare is a major issue 00:02:00.05\00:02:04.45 in these United States and all around the world. 00:02:04.49\00:02:07.92 Major healthcare challenges are affecting 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.59 millions and millions of people today. 00:02:10.63\00:02:13.06 And, remarkably, 00:02:13.09\00:02:14.86 there are often some very simple things that you can do 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.20 to minimize your risk or to get out from 00:02:17.23\00:02:19.27 under that health burden. 00:02:19.30\00:02:21.34 The Bible is a book that encourages 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.10 us to take our health seriously. 00:02:23.14\00:02:25.07 The Bible tells us that our bodies 00:02:25.11\00:02:26.71 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:26.74\00:02:29.31 Jesus came into this world to give us life more abundantly. 00:02:29.34\00:02:33.08 Back in the Old Testament, God said, 00:02:33.11\00:02:35.38 “I am the Lord who healeth thee.” 00:02:35.42\00:02:38.49 Well, we're going to talk about a health subject 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.56 that relates to just about all of us, 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.02 and my guest today is a good friend, 00:02:43.06\00:02:44.86 Dr. David DeRose from CompassHealth Consulting. 00:02:44.89\00:02:48.10 Dr. DeRose, thanks for joining me. 00:02:48.13\00:02:49.66 >>Dr. DeRose: Great to be with you, John. 00:02:49.70\00:02:51.00 >>John: This is not our first discussion together, 00:02:51.03\00:02:52.33 but this is the first time we've discussed here 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.14 the subject of obesity. 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.11 >>Dr. DeRose: Extremely important subject. 00:02:57.14\00:02:59.37 Some three-quarters of Americans, 00:02:59.41\00:03:01.48 and many people throughout the world, 00:03:01.51\00:03:04.01 impacted by this disorder. 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.55 And what's interesting to me, though, John, 00:03:05.58\00:03:07.38 we throw out this figure, three-quarters. 00:03:07.42\00:03:09.05 I mean, that's not just obesity, medically speaking. 00:03:09.08\00:03:11.75 It's also overweight. 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.29 But the problem is something that is getting 00:03:13.32\00:03:15.96 so much attention because it's affecting our youth. 00:03:15.99\00:03:18.93 Something like, uh, one in five youth 00:03:18.96\00:03:22.46 now meeting the definitions for being significantly overweight. 00:03:22.50\00:03:26.63 >>John: So there's overweight and there's obesity. 00:03:26.67\00:03:29.20 When does overweight become obesity? 00:03:29.24\00:03:30.84 What's the threshold? 00:03:30.87\00:03:31.81 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, you know, we use numbers 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.14 based on body mass index, which is, you know, 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.84 based on kilograms per meter squared, 00:03:35.88\00:03:38.35 and a lot of people, you know, their eyes kind of glaze over. 00:03:38.38\00:03:41.35 But the simple point I like to make to people, John, is this: 00:03:41.38\00:03:44.42 you know, we're speaking from a biblical perspective. 00:03:44.45\00:03:46.69 The first thing I like people to know is, you know what? 00:03:46.72\00:03:49.69 We can come to Jesus just as we are. 00:03:49.72\00:03:51.76 >>John: That's right. 00:03:51.79\00:03:52.99 Jesus is not saying, you know, once you lose enough weight, 00:03:53.03\00:03:56.23 then you're good enough to come to me. 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.57 He says, “Whosoever will take of the water of life freely.” 00:03:57.60\00:04:02.30 And so that encourages me 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.31 as we're coming from a biblical perspective. 00:04:04.34\00:04:06.78 >>John: Now, we're going to have to talk about 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.38 some pretty obvious things. 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.11 Uh, if someone is obese, what they can do about it. 00:04:11.15\00:04:14.22 But let's talk about some of the causes for obesity. 00:04:14.25\00:04:16.45 Perhaps they're obvious. 00:04:16.48\00:04:17.69 But let's walk through some of them anyway. 00:04:17.72\00:04:19.95 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, let's talk about the ones that often 00:04:19.99\00:04:21.82 don't come onto the radar screen. 00:04:21.86\00:04:23.49 >>John: Okay. 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.69 >>Dr. DeRose: First of all, there are early life history 00:04:24.73\00:04:27.10 factors that affect our weight. 00:04:27.13\00:04:28.83 Some people in the womb were exposed to stresses 00:04:28.86\00:04:32.03 that predisposed them to high blood pressure, 00:04:32.07\00:04:34.27 or to diabetes, or to obesity. 00:04:34.30\00:04:36.71 Maybe in early life, 1, 2 years of age, your feeding practices, 00:04:36.74\00:04:42.34 not of your own choosing, were such that it primed you 00:04:42.38\00:04:46.25 with more fat cells, so it's easier for you to be obese. 00:04:46.28\00:04:50.22 Hormonal factors can affect you. 00:04:50.25\00:04:52.15 There are actually metabolic hormonal causes. 00:04:52.19\00:04:54.82 One of the classic ones is Cushing's disorder, 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.23 or Cushing's disease, or Cushing's syndrome, 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.43 that actually can cause you to put on excess weight 00:04:59.46\00:05:02.23 even if you're doing everything right. 00:05:02.26\00:05:03.87 And so here at the very beginning, 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.83 I want to tell people, you can't just look at someone and say, 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.04 oh, you, you know, you didn't listen to It Is Written, 00:05:09.07\00:05:11.07 you didn't listen to Dr. DeRose and John Bradshaw. 00:05:11.11\00:05:13.68 Otherwise, you wouldn't have this problem. 00:05:13.71\00:05:15.61 >>John: We're going to do our best to talk about this 00:05:15.64\00:05:17.55 respectfully and in a nonjudgmental way. 00:05:17.58\00:05:19.45 And I think, I hope, we're going to talk about this redemptively. 00:05:19.48\00:05:24.55 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:05:24.59\00:05:25.45 >>John: What can someone do? 00:05:25.49\00:05:26.62 We don't need to point the finger and be critical, 00:05:26.65\00:05:28.32 but we do want to help people who want to be helped, 00:05:28.36\00:05:31.06 or will help themselves, or receive 00:05:31.09\00:05:32.93 the help that comes from God. 00:05:32.96\00:05:34.03 So where do we begin with this? 00:05:34.10\00:05:35.96 >>Dr. DeRose: The premise I take, John, 00:05:36.00\00:05:37.37 is that in the very beginning, when God created us, 00:05:37.40\00:05:40.54 he knew what kind of environment, 00:05:40.57\00:05:43.04 what kind of setting we needed to be in to live for eternity. 00:05:43.07\00:05:46.04 That was God's original intention. 00:05:46.07\00:05:47.74 So although we're not going to live eternally 00:05:47.78\00:05:50.48 on our own devices, God still, in the very beginning, 00:05:50.51\00:05:54.78 gives us clues about what the ideal diet, 00:05:54.82\00:05:57.89 what the ideal activity level, 00:05:57.92\00:05:59.95 other elements in lifestyle 00:06:00.06\00:06:01.59 that can actually help us to avoid obesity, 00:06:01.62\00:06:05.13 at least to a large extent. 00:06:05.16\00:06:07.03 >>John: You mentioned a moment ago the challenge 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.30 that we're seeing with kids who are overweight. 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.03 That is on the rise, is it? 00:06:12.07\00:06:13.57 >>Dr. DeRose: Most definitely. 00:06:13.60\00:06:14.60 >>John: What do we put that down to? 00:06:14.64\00:06:15.47 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, there's a lot. 00:06:15.50\00:06:16.57 I mean, there's studies showing that the more time 00:06:16.60\00:06:18.07 we spend in front of a television, I hate to say it, 00:06:18.11\00:06:20.28 but even It Is Written. 00:06:20.31\00:06:22.01 If someone is just watching It Is Written nonstop, 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.58 they, the research actually suggests it's not just sitting 00:06:24.61\00:06:28.25 in front of the TV and not doing activity that's a problem, 00:06:28.28\00:06:32.12 but it's also the commercials and the other messages. 00:06:32.15\00:06:34.56 So It Is Written gets, 00:06:34.59\00:06:35.49 you know, the green light on that basis. 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.56 >>John: Oh, I'm glad to know. All right. All right. 00:06:37.59\00:06:39.56 >>Dr. DeRose: But we're spending 00:06:39.59\00:06:40.56 far too much time doing inactive activities. 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.23 Our kids are being pulled away from physical activity. 00:06:43.26\00:06:46.57 And that's a huge determinant of how much we weigh. 00:06:46.60\00:06:49.94 >>John: Surely it's true, I have not read the study, 00:06:49.97\00:06:52.91 I didn't write the study. 00:06:52.94\00:06:54.21 But my, I have a hunch that um, 00:06:54.24\00:06:57.11 everybody's connected to the Internet, 00:06:57.15\00:06:59.01 everybody has a device, 00:06:59.05\00:07:00.42 there's so much you can do online. 00:07:00.45\00:07:02.02 You can explore the world, connect with people, 00:07:02.05\00:07:04.35 play games, veg out. 00:07:04.39\00:07:07.19 Before to get your entertainment, 00:07:07.22\00:07:08.49 you had to run outside and play with your friends. 00:07:08.52\00:07:09.92 Now you can sit in front of a screen. 00:07:09.96\00:07:11.39 That's just true, isn't it? 00:07:11.43\00:07:12.73 >>Dr. DeRose: It just is true, 00:07:12.76\00:07:13.66 and it is something that is contributing 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.56 to the obesity epidemic. 00:07:15.60\00:07:16.87 >>John: What can we do about that? 00:07:16.90\00:07:18.63 >>Dr. DeRose: Basically, it's turning back the clock. 00:07:18.67\00:07:21.00 It's, uh, not having so much screen time. 00:07:21.04\00:07:23.54 It's parents telling their kids, 00:07:23.57\00:07:25.44 you know, here are some limits on the television, 00:07:25.47\00:07:27.41 on the electronic devices. 00:07:27.44\00:07:29.84 And helping to do activity with them. 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.98 There's nothing as powerful as what a parent models 00:07:32.01\00:07:35.45 in his or her life. 00:07:35.48\00:07:36.79 >>John: Okay, so now that we're adults, 00:07:36.82\00:07:40.86 what can we do to begin to turn this back? 00:07:40.89\00:07:43.96 Let's just start scratching the surface 00:07:43.99\00:07:45.56 and come back to this in a moment. 00:07:45.59\00:07:46.66 What can we do? 00:07:46.70\00:07:47.66 >>Dr. DeRose: Let's start with a simple one. 00:07:47.66\00:07:48.96 And I say it's simple because I've seen my own patients do it. 00:07:49.00\00:07:50.90 I've got a patient in my practice right now; 00:07:50.93\00:07:52.80 he lost 60 pounds over the course of probably six months. 00:07:52.83\00:07:57.07 I said to him, “What did you do?” 00:07:57.11\00:07:59.21 One simple change. 00:07:59.24\00:08:01.21 >>John: What was that? 00:08:01.24\00:08:02.21 He got rid of the sugar-sweetened beverages, 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.45 and he's drinking primarily water. 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.38 Now, he's a big guy. 00:08:06.41\00:08:07.75 >>John: I have a friend, I can tell you this, 00:08:07.78\00:08:09.38 who lost 130 pounds. 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.25 He was a big guy, too. 00:08:11.29\00:08:11.92 Big, tall guy. 00:08:11.95\00:08:13.49 And, uh, I asked him, 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.06 same question, what did you do? 00:08:15.09\00:08:16.56 He said, I used to carry soda with me everywhere I went. 00:08:16.59\00:08:20.36 I got rid of it. 00:08:20.40\00:08:21.36 Never realized quite how much he was drinking. 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.50 And that was the thing that really, 00:08:23.53\00:08:25.97 the, the primary component of him losing 130 pounds. 00:08:26.00\00:08:30.84 >>Dr. DeRose: Isn't that amazing? 00:08:30.87\00:08:31.94 >>John: That's amazing. 00:08:31.97\00:08:32.51 >>Dr. DeRose: But many, 00:08:32.54\00:08:33.61 many of my colleagues have told me the same thing. 00:08:33.64\00:08:35.18 Just that simple change: 00:08:35.21\00:08:36.64 go with the water instead of the caloric beverages. 00:08:36.68\00:08:39.05 >>John: And that is a simple change. 00:08:39.08\00:08:40.38 >>Dr. DeRose: It is. 00:08:40.42\00:08:41.42 >>John: Okay. 00:10:33.26\00:10:36.63 >>Dr. DeRose: In medical circles, the million-dollar word 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.90 that is sometimes discussed is called sarcopenia. 00:10:38.93\00:10:42.77 And in simple language, it means that as we get older, 00:10:42.80\00:10:46.37 we tend to lose muscle mass. 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.78 So even if a person weighs the same at 60 as they did 00:10:48.81\00:10:52.85 when they were 30, the odds are, 00:10:52.88\00:10:54.78 unless they've been very deliberate 00:10:54.82\00:10:56.45 with a fitness program, they've got less muscle mass. 00:10:56.48\00:10:59.55 And here's where the rubber meets the road 00:10:59.59\00:11:01.49 in the discussion of obesity. 00:11:01.52\00:11:03.19 It's muscle mass, lean body mass, 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.93 that drives metabolism. 00:11:05.96\00:11:07.76 So as I lose that muscle mass, my metabolism is slowing down. 00:11:07.76\00:11:12.13 So it's not just purely a function of age, 00:11:12.17\00:11:15.17 but age does tend to go along with a slowing of metabolism 00:11:15.20\00:11:18.91 and a decrease in lean body mass. 00:11:18.94\00:11:21.21 >>John: Unfortunately, I'm, uh, I'm seeing that. 00:11:21.24\00:11:23.61 And so what that means is, and most people are seeing that, 00:11:23.65\00:11:28.95 because most people weigh too much. 00:11:28.98\00:11:31.15 What that means is, 00:11:31.19\00:11:32.25 we have to be intentional about this, don't we? 00:11:32.29\00:11:35.52 >>Dr. DeRose: It's so fascinating, to me, John, 00:11:35.56\00:11:37.66 that many times we take things for granted 00:11:37.69\00:11:40.23 until they get out of hand. 00:11:40.26\00:11:41.83 It's sometimes the diagnosis of high blood pressure, 00:11:41.86\00:11:44.43 a diabetes diagnosis, 00:11:44.47\00:11:46.63 with so many of these chronic diseases 00:11:46.67\00:11:48.37 linked to gaining weight, 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.21 and it doesn't have to be a huge amount. 00:11:50.24\00:11:51.71 >>John: How much? 00:11:51.74\00:11:52.84 >>Dr. DeRose: I mean, even, even losing five percent 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.71 of one's weight can make a measurable difference 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.95 in these metabolic diseases. 00:11:57.98\00:11:59.95 >>John: Five percent. 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.08 So for a lot of people who are overweight, 00:12:01.12\00:12:03.49 that'd just be 10 pounds. 00:12:03.52\00:12:04.82 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:12:04.85\00:12:05.62 So someone who weighs in the 200, 00:12:05.65\00:12:06.92 dropping 10 pounds can make a significant difference. 00:12:06.96\00:12:09.62 >>John: Oh, no kidding. That's all? 00:12:09.66\00:12:10.83 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:12:10.86\00:12:11.79 >>John: Okay, so let's talk about that. 00:12:11.83\00:12:12.99 Someone wants to drop 10 pounds. 00:12:13.03\00:12:14.36 What should they do? 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.80 >>Dr. DeRose: In the beginning, in Genesis chapter 1, 00:12:15.83\00:12:18.50 God gave Adam and Eve a diet that was wholly plant based. 00:12:18.53\00:12:23.14 Those plant foods are loaded with fiber and water. 00:12:23.17\00:12:26.44 So eating more of those whole plant foods 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.91 is going to fill me up, 00:12:28.94\00:12:29.88 going to satisfy me with much less calories. 00:12:29.91\00:12:32.35 >>John: Okay. 00:12:32.38\00:12:33.21 So that's a simple place to start, 00:12:33.25\00:12:34.38 although for some people, 00:12:34.42\00:12:35.48 they can't imagine making those kinds of changes. 00:12:35.52\00:12:37.99 Do you have to change all at once, 00:12:38.02\00:12:39.35 or can you ease into this gradually? 00:12:39.39\00:12:40.76 How do you go about changing what you eat? 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.89 >>Dr. DeRose: The idea is just start doing something, okay? 00:12:42.92\00:12:46.80 So have one meatless day a week. 00:12:46.83\00:12:50.50 Have one meatless meal a week, if that's novel for you. 00:12:50.53\00:12:53.47 And start experimenting more with beans and whole grain. 00:12:53.50\00:12:56.81 >>John: How quickly, you mentioned someone earlier, 00:12:56.84\00:12:59.11 60 pounds in six months. 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.14 If someone gives themselves to some type of lifestyle change 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.81 and there's got to be a variance here, 00:13:03.85\00:13:05.71 how quickly is it reasonable to assume a person 00:13:05.75\00:13:08.62 can see themselves losing weight? 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.19 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I've worked with intensive 00:13:10.22\00:13:11.52 lifestyle change programs. 00:13:11.55\00:13:12.95 We have people come in for two to three weeks 00:13:12.99\00:13:15.09 at a live-in facility, 00:13:15.12\00:13:16.52 and we would typically see weight loss in the range of 00:13:16.56\00:13:18.76 4-5 percent over that three-week time period. 00:13:18.79\00:13:23.06 So a 200-lb. person would drop 10 pounds over that, 00:13:23.10\00:13:26.60 over the course of just two or three weeks. 00:13:26.63\00:13:28.87 So, again, it's attainable with a, 00:13:28.90\00:13:30.74 and that's a very deliberate program. 00:13:30.77\00:13:33.34 And, you know, we're helping them exercise, 00:13:33.38\00:13:35.24 we're helping them eat right, 00:13:35.28\00:13:36.38 they're more active, 00:13:36.41\00:13:37.28 they're removed from their stressors. 00:13:37.31\00:13:38.95 Because stress, and those stress hormones, 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.45 actually, by the way, 00:13:41.48\00:13:42.65 they're the same hormones 00:13:42.68\00:13:44.22 that are involved in Cushing's syndrome. 00:13:44.25\00:13:46.45 That syndrome that causes obesity? 00:13:46.49\00:13:50.26 You ramp up your stress hormone levels, 00:13:50.29\00:13:52.19 and you're moving yourself closer, 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.13 I mean, I'm using a little bit of poetic license here, 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.97 but closer to a more Cushinoyd state. 00:13:57.00\00:13:59.70 >>John: So do something about what you drink. 00:13:59.73\00:14:01.37 Watch what you eat. 00:14:01.40\00:14:02.74 Certainly, you've got to get moving and start burning 00:14:02.77\00:14:06.64 some calories and being mobile. 00:14:06.68\00:14:08.41 But let me ask you this question: 00:14:08.44\00:14:09.74 is there an unhealthy way to go about losing weight? 00:14:09.78\00:14:15.05 What are some things that people should not do? 00:14:15.08\00:14:17.09 >>Dr. DeRose: I recommend that people make lifestyle changes 00:14:17.12\00:14:19.92 that they're going to stick with for life. 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.62 Don't go on these crash diets, 00:14:22.66\00:14:24.26 because they're really not sustainable. 00:14:24.29\00:14:26.13 And don't set yourself up for failure by, 00:14:26.16\00:14:28.63 by setting some kind of a goal that's totally unrealistic. 00:14:28.66\00:14:31.87 When I was running a hospital-based 00:14:31.90\00:14:33.97 weight-loss program, I would do a history. 00:14:34.00\00:14:36.20 I'd ask a person, 00:14:36.24\00:14:37.47 “Well, what did you weigh when you were, you know, 15?” 00:14:37.51\00:14:40.24 If a person told me they weighed 400 when they were 15, 00:14:40.28\00:14:43.41 and they're setting a weight loss goal of 120, 00:14:43.45\00:14:46.68 I'm thinking, you know what? 00:14:46.72\00:14:48.38 At 600 pounds, this is not really likely to be obtainable. 00:14:48.42\00:14:51.75 Set the goals too high, and even if you make a lot of progress, 00:14:51.79\00:14:55.32 you're going to throw in the towel because you think, 00:14:55.36\00:14:57.16 hey, I could never weigh 120 like my next-door neighbor. 00:14:57.19\00:14:59.96 >>John: You mentioned the fad diets. 00:15:00.06\00:15:02.50 They're not helpful, are they? 00:15:02.53\00:15:03.67 >>Dr. DeRose: They're generally not helpful at all. 00:15:03.70\00:15:05.43 Now, some people say, well, but, you know, 00:15:05.47\00:15:06.97 it motivated me to do this. 00:15:07.00\00:15:08.84 But the problem is, when you get on a diet 00:15:08.87\00:15:10.97 that causes rapid weight loss, you lose muscle mass as well, 00:15:11.01\00:15:14.64 and we already talked about how that drives metabolism. 00:15:14.68\00:15:17.25 So it makes it so easy when you go back 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.15 to eating your old way of eating. 00:15:19.18\00:15:21.45 Now your metabolism's slower, 00:15:21.48\00:15:23.05 and you actually put on more weight than you originally lost. 00:15:23.08\00:15:26.02 >>John: You mentioned, I think, a key thing: a lifestyle change. 00:15:26.05\00:15:28.89 >>Dr. DeRose: Huge. 00:15:28.92\00:15:29.96 >>John: Yeah, you can go on a six-week diet or a 00:15:29.99\00:15:30.99 six-month diet and make a change, 00:15:31.03\00:15:32.33 but you've got to go back to what you were before, 00:15:32.36\00:15:34.46 and what you were before got you to where you didn't want to be. 00:15:34.46\00:15:37.57 So it's really important to keep in mind, 00:15:37.60\00:15:39.30 isn't it, the long haul? 00:15:39.33\00:15:40.44 What changes can I adopt that I can stick with, 00:15:40.47\00:15:44.61 that will continue to provide benefit. 00:15:44.64\00:15:46.57 >>Dr. DeRose: It's really important. 00:15:46.61\00:15:47.91 And when I work closely with people, I say, 00:15:47.94\00:15:49.58 look at those things, if we want to just use diet as an example. 00:15:49.61\00:15:52.68 Look at the problem foods. 00:15:52.71\00:15:54.78 What things do you have trouble controlling your consumption of? 00:15:54.82\00:15:57.69 Believe it or not, the best strategy is the same strategy 00:15:57.72\00:16:01.22 we give the alcoholic or the nicotine addict. 00:16:01.26\00:16:03.63 We say, leave that food out completely. 00:16:03.66\00:16:06.13 Leave it out completely! you know they say. 00:16:06.16\00:16:07.46 It's my favorite food! 00:16:07.50\00:16:09.33 But that is the path to success if you have 00:16:09.36\00:16:11.87 an addictive relationship with a certain food. 00:16:11.90\00:16:14.70 >>John: The wonderful thing about attacking 00:16:14.74\00:16:16.40 a diet-related issue is, there's so much to eat. 00:16:16.44\00:16:21.81 And if you, if you don't, if someone tells you, 00:16:21.84\00:16:24.55 lay off the M&Ms, man, 00:16:24.58\00:16:25.91 you could eat blueberries or carrot sticks. 00:16:25.95\00:16:28.08 I know that didn't excite you, the carrot sticks. 00:16:28.12\00:16:29.82 But you could, you could find all kinds of fruit, 00:16:29.85\00:16:32.92 your favorite fruit. 00:16:32.95\00:16:34.36 You can find, anyhow, 00:16:34.39\00:16:36.19 there are lots of good alternatives aren't there? 00:16:36.22\00:16:37.93 >>Dr. DeRose: There are. 00:16:37.96\00:16:38.96 And the good news, John, is God has created us 00:16:38.99\00:16:42.00 with the ability to develop new enjoyments. 00:16:42.03\00:16:45.03 We make a clean break with those things that are harmful. 00:16:45.07\00:16:48.64 We can develop new enjoyments for 00:16:48.67\00:16:50.24 the blueberries and the carrots. 00:16:50.27\00:16:51.74 And I think it's so interesting: when God speaks, 00:16:51.77\00:16:54.51 typically, look at the Ten Commandments. 00:16:54.54\00:16:56.91 He didn't say, cut back on your stealing. 00:16:56.95\00:16:59.61 Do a little bit less in the way of extramarital relations right? 00:16:59.65\00:17:03.59 >>John: Right. 00:17:03.62\00:17:04.42 >>Dr. DeRose: Clearcut guidelines. 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.89 Those are the most powerful when it comes to behavior change. 00:17:06.92\00:17:09.16 >>John: The fact of the matter is that one's diet 00:17:09.19\00:17:10.99 or one's lack of following good health principles 00:17:11.03\00:17:13.86 ends up with obesity, 00:17:13.90\00:17:15.16 which will often just drag a person to an early grave. 00:17:15.20\00:17:17.27 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:17:17.30\00:17:18.53 >>John: So one's motivation to want to make these changes 00:17:18.57\00:17:20.14 should be really pretty high, 00:17:20.17\00:17:21.14 because the, not making the changes, disaster. 00:17:21.17\00:17:24.41 Making the changes, fantastic benefits. 00:17:24.44\00:17:27.38 Fantastic benefits. 00:17:27.41\00:17:28.64 Including a clearer mind that will more keenly 00:17:28.68\00:17:31.15 hear the voice of God and discern the will of God. 00:17:31.18\00:17:34.72 We'll discuss that more in just a moment. 00:17:34.75\00:17:38.29 ¤[Music]¤ 00:17:39.05\00:17:40.79 Announcer: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:17:40.82\00:17:43.19 “It is written, 00:17:43.22\00:17:44.26 ‘Man shall not live by bead alone, 00:17:44.29\00:17:46.13 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” 00:17:46.16\00:17:50.23 “Every Word” 00:17:50.27\00:17:51.20 is a one-minute, Bible-based daily devotional 00:17:51.23\00:17:53.50 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw, 00:17:53.54\00:17:55.20 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:17:55.24\00:17:58.34 Look for Every Word on selected networks, 00:17:58.37\00:18:01.21 or watch it online every day on our website, 00:18:01.24\00:18:03.68 ItIsWritten.com 00:18:03.71\00:18:06.08 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:18:06.11\00:18:08.22 Watch “Every Word.” 00:18:08.25\00:18:09.62 You'll be glad you did. 00:18:09.65\00:18:10.65 Here's a sample. 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.92 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:18:14.46\00:18:18.46 >>John: The story goes that the mice had a meeting one day 00:18:18.49\00:18:21.06 to figure out what they could do about that troublesome cat. 00:18:21.10\00:18:24.23 One bright mouse suggested that what they needed 00:18:24.27\00:18:26.23 to do was attach a bell to the cat's collar. 00:18:26.27\00:18:29.90 They'd always know where the cat was, and they'd be safe. 00:18:29.94\00:18:31.97 All the mice were happy, until one mouse asked, 00:18:32.01\00:18:36.04 “But who will bell the cat?” 00:18:36.08\00:18:38.95 Hmm. 00:18:38.98\00:18:40.15 Jesus said in Matthew 28:19, 00:18:40.18\00:18:42.32 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, 00:18:42.35\00:18:45.19 baptizing them in the name of the Father, 00:18:45.22\00:18:47.16 and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” 00:18:47.19\00:18:49.86 We all think it's a good idea to share the good news. 00:18:49.89\00:18:52.46 But who will bell the cat? 00:19:30.60\00:19:31.53 >>Dr. DeRose: It really is. 00:19:31.57\00:19:32.73 And, you know, John as we speak about the spiritual impact 00:19:32.77\00:19:35.17 and the ministry impact, one of the sobering statistics is, 00:19:35.20\00:19:38.71 if a person is overweight and has diabetes, 00:19:38.74\00:19:42.91 that can increase their risk of dementia up to fourfold. 00:19:42.94\00:19:46.61 So we're talking about things that 00:19:46.65\00:19:47.95 not only cut our life short, 00:19:47.98\00:19:49.78 but they definitely impact our relationship 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.92 with God and with other people. 00:19:51.95\00:19:54.12 >>John: Uh, we talked about diet, 00:19:54.16\00:19:56.36 making good choices with what you eat, 00:19:56.39\00:19:57.69 what you drink. 00:19:57.73\00:19:59.29 Uh, are there any other things 00:19:59.33\00:20:00.56 that people ought to be thinking about? 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.43 >>Dr. DeRose: Well, I would say have an accountability partner. 00:20:02.46\00:20:05.27 >>John: Okay. 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.27 >>Dr. DeRose: I mean, it could be a spouse, 00:20:06.30\00:20:07.27 could be a close friend, could be a church group. 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.14 Because what we find about behaviors 00:20:09.17\00:20:11.17 is if you have a supportive environment, 00:20:11.21\00:20:13.41 it's powerful. 00:20:13.44\00:20:14.41 Fascinating study in one of the science journals. 00:20:14.44\00:20:16.41 This is a family of journals, the science family of journals. 00:20:16.44\00:20:19.35 The comment of the authors was that basically 00:20:19.38\00:20:22.38 who we keep company with is impacting our risk of obesity. 00:20:22.42\00:20:28.09 >>John: One thing that I find fascinating 00:20:28.12\00:20:30.86 is that sugar consumption is linked to obesity. 00:20:30.89\00:20:34.86 There's sugar in everything. 00:20:34.93\00:20:39.37 Do you think people know, 00:20:39.40\00:20:41.27 even when they eat health foods, 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.51 they're often eating way too much sugar? 00:20:43.54\00:20:45.31 >>Dr. DeRose: It's a sad commentary. 00:20:45.34\00:20:46.84 I tell people when they look at those carbohydrate-rich foods, 00:20:46.88\00:20:50.61 shoot for one fifth of the calories of, 00:20:50.65\00:20:53.85 from carbohydrates as being from simple sugars. 00:20:53.88\00:20:56.48 So you're picking that granola because you think it's healthy. 00:20:56.52\00:20:59.59 But that granola may have 50 percent 00:20:59.62\00:21:02.49 of its carbohydrate calories as simple sugars, 00:21:02.52\00:21:05.03 simple carbohydrates. 00:21:05.06\00:21:06.26 >>John: Now, an interesting thing: 00:21:06.29\00:21:07.76 somebody gave me a snack at Christmas, 00:21:07.83\00:21:09.70 you know, as, as you'll do around the office. 00:21:09.73\00:21:11.50 And it was a, it was a sugary snack. 00:21:11.53\00:21:14.27 And I had this sugary snack food in my hand. 00:21:14.30\00:21:16.50 I looked at the sugar content. 00:21:16.54\00:21:18.31 My wife had a granola bar in her hand. 00:21:18.34\00:21:21.28 I said, “Do something for me. 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.38 Look at the sugar content in that granola bar.” 00:21:22.41\00:21:24.98 What I had was obviously not a health food. 00:21:25.01\00:21:29.42 What she had is taken to be a health food. 00:21:29.45\00:21:32.82 It had more than double the sugar in the granola bar 00:21:32.85\00:21:36.73 than I had in the sugary snack food that somebody had given me. 00:21:36.76\00:21:39.43 >>Dr. DeRose: It is startling. 00:21:39.46\00:21:40.63 And if you don't read labels, you'll get in trouble. 00:21:40.66\00:21:42.26 And I've seen this happen with so many of the dessert options. 00:21:42.30\00:21:44.73 You know, there's a low-fat dessert. 00:21:44.77\00:21:46.70 You look at it; it's got twice the calories from sugar in it. 00:21:46.74\00:21:49.77 >>John: Umm, and calories from sugar is a real problem. 00:21:49.80\00:21:51.57 >>Dr. DeRose: It is, as are the problems from, 00:21:51.61\00:21:53.71 you know, with fat calories. 00:21:53.74\00:21:54.94 >>John: In most cases, not all, but in most cases 00:21:54.98\00:21:58.11 we are dealing with a preventable healthcare crisis. 00:21:58.15\00:22:01.88 >>Dr. DeRose: In most cases, you're exactly right. 00:22:01.92\00:22:03.82 And a person, again, doesn't have to reach some ideal number, 00:22:03.85\00:22:07.16 but if they can trim down, adopt healthier behaviors, 00:22:07.19\00:22:10.03 their weight will come down, 00:22:10.06\00:22:11.16 they'll feel better, 00:22:11.19\00:22:12.09 they'll look better, 00:22:12.13\00:22:12.96 and their ministry will be enhanced. 00:22:12.99\00:22:14.60 You know, one paraphrase of a famous New Testament text is, 00:22:14.63\00:22:18.73 “Don't let the world press you into its mold.” 00:22:18.77\00:22:21.34 And “Be not conformed to this world.” 00:22:21.37\00:22:24.31 >>John: Yeah. 00:22:24.34\00:22:25.37 >>Dr. DeRose: But, John, it's so interesting. 00:22:25.41\00:22:26.37 You're right. 00:22:26.41\00:22:27.31 It's often, we slip into these habits. 00:22:27.34\00:22:29.68 But it's being deliberate. 00:22:29.71\00:22:31.28 It's refocusing our lifestyle. 00:22:31.31\00:22:33.48 That's really where it starts. 00:22:33.52\00:22:34.82 >>John: Yeah, for sure. 00:22:34.85\00:22:35.98 Okay, now let's talk about this: you eat too much, you, 00:22:36.02\00:22:39.69 there ends up being too much of you. 00:22:39.72\00:22:41.72 What about people who consume the Bible, 00:22:41.76\00:22:46.63 read spiritual books, 00:22:46.66\00:22:47.83 attend worship services. 00:22:47.86\00:22:49.30 They, they receive, receive, receive, but don't give. 00:22:49.33\00:22:54.24 I've heard of spiritual obesity being referred to, 00:22:54.27\00:22:57.21 where you consume and consume and consume. 00:22:57.24\00:23:00.34 God wants for His children to be not just consumers 00:23:00.38\00:23:04.25 of spiritual things, but sharers, producers. 00:23:04.28\00:23:06.88 Discuss that with me as a minister of the gospel. 00:23:06.92\00:23:08.62 >>Dr. DeRose: No, it's a great analogy, 00:23:08.65\00:23:10.05 because Jesus, if you wanted to summarize 00:23:10.09\00:23:12.02 His great commission in one word, 00:23:12.05\00:23:13.52 the word is “go.” 00:23:13.56\00:23:14.99 And so it's, what we find in the obesity realm is true: 00:23:15.02\00:23:18.93 it's not just the diet, but it's the activity. 00:23:18.96\00:23:21.36 It's the going. 00:23:21.40\00:23:22.33 And it's so true in the spiritual realm, 00:23:22.36\00:23:23.93 John. You and I have seen it. 00:23:23.97\00:23:25.33 You can have this lethargy, really, 00:23:25.37\00:23:27.57 that comes over a person who just is so focused on 00:23:27.60\00:23:30.41 “what can I get out of the Bible?” 00:23:30.44\00:23:31.87 and, in fact, their spiritual life suffers. 00:23:31.91\00:23:34.91 They can be going to church meetings. 00:23:34.94\00:23:36.48 They can be watching all the It Is Written programs. 00:23:36.51\00:23:39.35 But it's not at the spiritual level where they could be 00:23:39.38\00:23:42.65 because they're not sharing. 00:23:42.68\00:23:43.82 >>John: Paul told Timothy to learn these things 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.85 and then teach them to others, so that they can teach others. 00:23:45.89\00:23:49.09 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:23:49.12\00:23:49.76 >>John: Yeah. 00:23:49.79\00:23:50.83 So what would you say to that person who maybe, 00:23:50.86\00:23:52.99 and there's a massive amount of people 00:23:53.03\00:23:55.66 who've never shared their faith. 00:23:55.70\00:23:58.37 Never. 00:23:58.40\00:23:59.53 Never opened up the pages of the Bible with somebody. 00:23:59.57\00:24:01.30 Never witnessed. 00:24:01.34\00:24:02.54 Never invited someone to a, a church or religious service. 00:24:02.57\00:24:05.27 How do we help those people to become spiritually active 00:24:05.31\00:24:08.74 rather than spiritually obese? 00:24:08.78\00:24:11.15 >>Dr. DeRose: I think it begins with recognizing 00:24:11.18\00:24:13.48 Jesus' call for each one of us. 00:24:13.52\00:24:15.42 We're all called to be disciple makers. 00:24:15.45\00:24:17.55 When we recognize that, it should change our prayer life. 00:24:17.59\00:24:21.02 Lord, how do you want me to fulfill that calling today? 00:24:21.06\00:24:25.76 Give me an opportunity. 00:24:25.79\00:24:26.83 Show me someone that I can encourage, 00:24:26.86\00:24:28.86 someone that I can share with. 00:24:28.90\00:24:30.07 >>John: I want to read that passage that you mentioned, 00:24:30.10\00:24:32.03 because it's just, it's just so important. 00:24:32.07\00:24:34.17 In Matthew, chapter 28, the great commission. 00:24:34.20\00:24:36.81 At the end of the chapter, 00:24:36.84\00:24:38.64 “Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 00:24:38.67\00:24:40.54 ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.'” 00:24:40.58\00:24:43.04 He said, “'Go therefore.'” 00:24:43.08\00:24:44.58 Go. You can't go and be inactive. 00:24:44.61\00:24:47.28 “'And make disciples of all nations, 00:24:47.32\00:24:49.58 baptizing them in the name of the Father 00:24:49.62\00:24:51.32 and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 00:24:51.35\00:24:53.89 teaching them to observe all things 00:24:53.92\00:24:55.62 that I have commanded you.'” 00:24:55.66\00:24:56.62 And then Jesus promises us his presence with us. 00:24:56.66\00:24:59.73 God has commissioned every one of us to be a disciple maker. 00:24:59.76\00:25:03.06 >>Dr. DeRose: That's right. 00:25:03.10\00:25:04.17 >>John: And perhaps we are gifted in various ways, 00:25:04.20\00:25:06.20 and it seems to come more naturally to some 00:25:06.23\00:25:08.44 than to others. 00:25:08.47\00:25:09.04 But you can't say, oh, 00:25:09.07\00:25:10.21 sharing my faith is not my spiritual gift. 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.71 There's nothing to hide behind here. 00:25:12.74\00:25:14.54 God brings us into contact with people. 00:25:14.58\00:25:16.24 If we're prayerful and we're on the lookout, 00:25:16.28\00:25:18.68 we can find people to share our faith with. 00:25:18.71\00:25:21.62 And that's just good for us on a spiritual level. 00:25:21.65\00:25:24.42 Not just good for them, but good for us. 00:25:24.45\00:25:26.02 >>Dr. DeRose: It is. 00:25:26.05\00:25:26.99 And the way this all comes full circle is, 00:25:27.02\00:25:28.49 pray for someone who has needs like yours. 00:25:28.52\00:25:30.86 If you're trying to lose weight, 00:25:30.89\00:25:32.33 pray that God will bring you into contact 00:25:32.36\00:25:34.23 with someone else who needs to trim down, 00:25:34.30\00:25:37.00 and maybe that's a person not of your faith. 00:25:37.03\00:25:39.27 Maybe they don't know what you know spiritually. 00:25:39.30\00:25:41.47 But as you work together on your health, 00:25:41.50\00:25:43.71 it opens up doors for you to share your faith. 00:25:43.74\00:25:46.84 >>John: Doing something about de, destructive lifestyle habits 00:25:46.88\00:25:49.74 is an insurmountable problem for many people. 00:25:49.78\00:25:51.85 However, here's what we remember. 00:25:51.88\00:25:54.18 Jesus said, “I am with you always.” 00:25:54.22\00:25:56.35 Paul wrote, 00:25:56.38\00:25:57.65 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” 00:25:57.69\00:26:01.02 And he wrote in the same chapter, 00:26:01.06\00:26:02.42 Philippians, chapter 4, 00:26:02.46\00:26:04.06 “My God shall supply all your need 00:26:04.09\00:26:06.63 according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” 00:26:06.66\00:26:08.90 So we don't want to be talking about righteousness by works, 00:26:08.93\00:26:12.43 or health by works. 00:26:12.47\00:26:14.77 Everything we do, 00:26:14.80\00:26:15.94 we want to do in association and cooperation with God, 00:26:15.97\00:26:19.37 who blesses you, 00:26:19.41\00:26:20.98 who dwells in you, 00:26:21.01\00:26:22.98 and will work in you 00:26:23.01\00:26:24.01 both to will and to do for his good pleasure. 00:26:24.05\00:26:26.51 So we would encourage you today. 00:26:26.55\00:26:28.42 Take hold of the hand of God. 00:26:28.45\00:26:29.72 If you're looking at losing some pounds, 00:26:29.75\00:26:31.59 if you're looking at getting active, 00:26:31.62\00:26:32.95 if you're dealing with a lifestyle condition 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.02 that you know could be remedied or reversed, 00:26:35.06\00:26:38.76 simply by making some simple changes. 00:26:38.79\00:26:40.76 If you've never been able to make them, 00:26:40.80\00:26:42.10 you can go to God in prayer and say, 00:26:42.13\00:26:44.13 “This is what I need. 00:26:44.17\00:26:46.80 I am willing. 00:26:46.84\00:26:48.34 Work in my life.” 00:26:48.37\00:26:49.47 And Jesus says, “Ask and it shall be given. 00:26:49.50\00:26:53.94 Seek and you shall find.” 00:26:53.98\00:26:55.84 So, if you have the knowledge in your head, 00:26:55.88\00:26:59.65 Christ in your heart, 00:26:59.68\00:27:01.58 it seems to me like you've got everything you need. 00:27:01.62\00:27:03.75 >>Dr. DeRose: You do. 00:27:03.79\00:27:04.62 And, uh, all His biddings are enablings. 00:27:04.65\00:27:07.19 God will give you the power to make the changes 00:27:07.22\00:27:09.32 He impresses you to make. 00:27:09.36\00:27:11.36 >>John: We both know that God wants the very best for us. 00:27:12.46\00:27:15.13 But at times that can be a challenge. 00:27:15.16\00:27:18.07 What do you do about obesity?
