00:02:20.67\00:02:22.30 There was no radio, 00:02:22.34\00:02:23.04 no television, 00:02:23.07\00:02:23.97 no internet. 00:02:24.01\00:02:25.77 There was no plastic, 00:02:25.81\00:02:26.94 no 00:02:37.22\00:02:39.29 No GMOs, 00:02:39.32\00:02:40.22 no cameras, no newspapers... 00:02:40.26\00:02:42.66 It was a different world. 00:02:42.69\00:02:45.33 Now think about this. 00:02:45.36\00:02:47.10 There was no Baptist Church 500 years ago. 00:02:47.13\00:02:50.07 No Pentecostal Church. 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.10 There were no Presbyterians, no Methodists, 00:02:52.13\00:02:54.20 no Seventh-day Adventists, 00:02:54.24\00:02:55.87 no Church of England (or Episcopal Church). 00:02:55.90\00:02:58.01 In fact, there was only one Church. 00:02:58.04\00:03:02.78 Then, as now, it was led by a pope. 00:03:02.81\00:03:06.72 The popes 500 years ago were men like Leo the 10th, 00:03:06.75\00:03:10.52 Adrian the 6th, 00:03:10.55\00:03:12.02 Clement the 7th, 00:03:12.05\00:03:13.32 Paul the 3rd, 00:03:13.36\00:03:14.62 Julius the 3rd 00:03:14.66\00:03:15.52 and Marcellus the 2nd. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.03 And they weren't only leaders of the church, 00:03:18.06\00:03:21.33 but they were also immensely powerful political figures. 00:03:21.36\00:03:25.80 Or, to put it another way, 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.50 500 years ago there was no religious freedom. 00:03:27.54\00:03:31.21 You could attend church, listen to the priest, 00:03:31.24\00:03:33.27 maybe hear the organ music, 00:03:33.31\00:03:35.38 but you couldn't believe what you wanted to believe. 00:03:35.41\00:03:38.35 And you definitely couldn't read a Bible. 00:03:38.38\00:03:41.25 You believed what the church told you to believe. 00:03:41.28\00:03:44.65 And if you dared to do otherwise, well, 00:03:44.69\00:03:47.46 life was difficult at best. 00:03:47.49\00:03:50.39 Now, down through the ages there were those who dissented, 00:03:50.43\00:03:53.43 but they existed in the shadows. 00:03:53.46\00:03:55.73 It was only a tiny minority that dared to stand up against 00:03:55.76\00:03:59.50 the might of the Church. 00:03:59.53\00:04:01.10 ¤[Music]¤ 00:04:01.14\00:04:06.31 Five hundred years ago it was tough 00:04:06.34\00:04:08.78 if you didn't agree with the church. 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.11 If you wanted to believe what you believed, 00:04:11.15\00:04:13.55 you either had to be very secretive about it, 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.42 or run the risk of being uncovered, 00:04:16.45\00:04:18.79 persecuted, 00:04:18.82\00:04:20.59 and more than likely killed. 00:04:20.62\00:04:23.09 If you value religious freedom today, 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.16 the freedom to belong to the church you want 00:04:25.19\00:04:28.23 and to believe what you believe, 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.10 or even the freedom to belong to no church 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.47 and believe there is no God, 00:04:32.50\00:04:35.17 then consider that a few centuries ago 00:04:35.20\00:04:37.94 that freedom didn't exist. 00:04:37.97\00:04:40.44 But all that would change. 00:04:43.85\00:04:45.48 In 1517, on October the 31st, 00:04:45.51\00:04:48.88 a priest in a small town in Germany 00:04:48.92\00:04:52.75 changed western civilization, 00:04:52.79\00:04:55.62 and risked his life by defying the power of the ruling church. 00:04:55.66\00:05:01.23 His contribution to history was so immense that 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.23 Time Magazine ranked him fourth on the list of the Greatest Men 00:05:04.27\00:05:07.97 of the Millennium. 00:05:08.00\00:05:10.01 Looking at those ranked above him, 00:05:10.04\00:05:11.47 it's easy to think he should have been ranked number one. 00:05:11.51\00:05:17.28 Five hundred years ago, 00:05:17.31\00:05:18.71 the Protestant Reformation began when a young priest 00:05:18.75\00:05:22.48 turned academic by the name of Dr. Martin Luther 00:05:22.52\00:05:26.45 nailed a list of protests to the door of this church 00:05:26.49\00:05:30.23 in Wittenberg, Germany. 00:05:30.26\00:05:31.86 When he did so, he didn't realize 00:05:31.89\00:05:33.26 he was about to set history on fire. 00:05:33.29\00:05:35.96 He had no intention of starting a new church. 00:05:36.00\00:05:38.97 All Martin Luther wanted to see was his church 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.77 come closer to the Bible. 00:05:41.80\00:05:44.11 He was calling for reform. 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.51 Bound up in the genesis of the Protestant Reformation, 00:05:48.58\00:05:51.35 several very important questions. 00:05:51.38\00:05:53.78 To begin with, 00:05:53.82\00:05:54.95 how important is it that a person have that right 00:05:54.98\00:05:59.69 to determine for himself or herself what to believe? 00:05:59.72\00:06:04.53 Five hundred years ago, 00:06:04.56\00:06:05.73 you believed what the church told you to believe. 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.70 Beyond that, you didn't have much of anything. 00:06:08.73\00:06:11.07 How important is it that you choose for yourself 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.67 what you think and what you believe? 00:06:13.70\00:06:17.07 Second, when it comes to what you believe, 00:06:17.11\00:06:19.67 think about that question that Pilate asked Jesus 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.78 the night before Jesus was crucified. 00:06:22.81\00:06:24.58 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” 00:06:24.61\00:06:29.48 Today you'll hear that people have their truth. 00:06:29.52\00:06:31.99 I have my truth. 00:06:32.02\00:06:33.46 You have your truth. 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.26 What is truth? 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.83 And how do you decide? 00:06:36.86\00:06:38.66 Is truth subject to a vote? 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.36 Should there be a, a court of ideas? 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.60 How do you decide? 00:06:44.63\00:06:46.47 Is there a standard by which ideas or truths 00:06:46.50\00:06:51.74 can be objectively judged? 00:06:51.77\00:06:55.84 And what's truth worth? 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.41 What is the freedom to believe actually worth? 00:06:57.45\00:07:02.68 How far do you press this? 00:07:02.72\00:07:05.02 When is it worth being a troubler of the people? 00:07:05.05\00:07:09.09 And is there ever a time that the freedom to believe your own 00:07:09.12\00:07:14.00 ideas is something that's actually worth dying for? 00:07:14.03\00:07:19.10 ¤[Music]¤ 00:07:19.13\00:07:22.77 Now, when you think of a person's 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.84 deeply held personal beliefs, 00:07:24.87\00:07:27.64 you could dismiss that as just ideas, theories. 00:07:27.68\00:07:32.11 But what we know is that a person's 00:07:32.15\00:07:34.42 deeply held personal beliefs provide the framework 00:07:34.45\00:07:38.35 for that person's entire life, 00:07:38.39\00:07:39.99 and they certainly form that person's faith. 00:07:40.02\00:07:44.59 In looking at the Protestant Reformation, 00:07:44.63\00:07:46.16 it's important that you go back and consider 00:07:46.19\00:07:48.20 the foundation of Christianity altogether. 00:07:48.23\00:07:52.47 Reform today typically means new ideas, 00:07:52.50\00:07:56.07 whether you're dealing with political, cultural, 00:07:56.10\00:07:58.41 social, or religious reform. 00:07:58.44\00:08:00.08 It's about finding something new, whatever's next. 00:08:00.11\00:08:04.18 But not the way God sees it. 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.35 As God looks at reform, typically He calls us back. 00:08:06.38\00:08:09.82 He calls us back to old ideas, 00:08:09.85\00:08:13.29 to things that he has established already. 00:08:13.32\00:08:17.66 Speaking for God, the prophet Jeremiah said this: 00:08:17.69\00:08:20.20 “Thus says the Lord, Stand in the ways and see, 00:08:20.23\00:08:24.37 and ask for the old paths, 00:08:24.40\00:08:26.43 where the good way is, and walk in it; 00:08:26.47\00:08:29.77 then you shall find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16). 00:08:29.80\00:08:35.28 The Bible, both the Old and the New Testaments, 00:08:35.31\00:08:38.31 form the basis of the early Christian church. 00:08:38.35\00:08:41.98 The Apostle Paul, writing to young Timothy said that 00:08:42.02\00:08:44.72 “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, 00:08:44.75\00:08:47.66 and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, 00:08:47.69\00:08:51.96 and for instruction in righteousness.” 00:08:51.99\00:08:53.60 That's Second Timothy 3 and verse 16. 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.06 The consuming passion of the early Christians, 00:08:56.10\00:08:59.90 the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus 00:08:59.93\00:09:02.87 for the salvation of humanity, 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.71 was said by Paul to rest upon the Scriptures: 00:09:04.74\00:09:08.41 “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: 00:09:08.44\00:09:12.91 that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 00:09:12.95\00:09:17.15 And that He was buried, 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.22 and that He rose again the third day 00:09:18.25\00:09:21.02 according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3 and 4). 00:09:21.06\00:09:25.69 The New Testament teaching of justification by faith, 00:09:25.73\00:09:29.03 a central focus of the Protestant Reformation, 00:09:29.06\00:09:32.07 is also said by Paul to rest upon scripture. 00:09:32.10\00:09:35.64 Listen to what he said in Romans, chapter 1, verses 16-17 00:09:35.67\00:09:40.54 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, 00:09:40.58\00:09:44.08 for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone 00:09:44.11\00:09:48.35 who believes, 00:09:48.38\00:09:49.78 for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 00:09:49.82\00:09:54.02 For in it the righteousness of God 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.26 is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 00:09:56.29\00:10:00.46 ‘The just shall live by faith'” (Romans 1:16 and 17). 00:10:00.50\00:10:06.50 What was clear to the founders of the Christian religion 00:10:06.53\00:10:09.70 is that the message they shared was the Word of the eternal God. 00:10:09.74\00:10:14.88 “When you received the word of God which you heard from us, 00:10:14.91\00:10:17.48 you welcomed it not as the word of men, 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.45 but as it is in truth, the word of God, 00:10:20.48\00:10:24.89 which also effectively works in you who believe” 00:10:24.92\00:10:28.42 (First Thessalonians 2:13). 00:10:28.46\00:10:30.89 When certain individuals got it in their heads 00:10:30.93\00:10:33.09 that the church had to be reformed, 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.46 and when they chose to put their lives on the line 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.83 to see that it happened, 00:10:37.87\00:10:39.80 things were going to get exciting. 00:10:39.83\00:10:43.77 I'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:10:43.81\00:10:45.74 ¤[Music]¤ 00:10:45.77\00:10:51.01 [Sound of wolves] 00:10:53.82\00:10:57.95 ¤[Music]¤ United States. 00:12:12.53\00:12:15.13 Lunch counter sit-ins. 00:12:15.16\00:12:16.67 Bus boycotts. 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.07 Protest marches. 00:12:18.10\00:12:19.93 Where would the United States be today 00:12:19.97\00:12:21.87 without those heroes who stood up boldly and demanded reform? 00:12:21.90\00:12:26.81 Many lost their lives. 00:12:26.84\00:12:29.94 Was it worth it? 00:12:29.98\00:12:32.15 The fall of European communism in the early 1990s. 00:12:32.18\00:12:35.72 Starting with Lech Walesa and the Solidarity Movement, 00:12:35.75\00:12:39.52 and desperate East Germans 00:12:39.55\00:12:41.46 who wanted to see the Berlin Wall come down, 00:12:41.49\00:12:44.59 and Czechs who protested in Wenceslas Square. 00:12:44.63\00:12:49.40 Was that worth it? 00:12:49.43\00:12:51.00 The Boston Tea Party in 1773. 00:12:51.03\00:12:54.30 Of course the list goes on. 00:12:54.34\00:12:56.47 Sometimes protest is absolutely essential. 00:12:56.50\00:13:01.11 A protest about taxation without representation? 00:13:01.14\00:13:04.25 Yeah, that's important. 00:13:04.28\00:13:05.68 Your country is occupied? 00:13:05.71\00:13:07.48 Well, that's important too. 00:13:07.52\00:13:08.58 You don't like your system of government; 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.32 you feel like you're being oppressed. 00:13:11.35\00:13:13.62 Well, most of us can only imagine. 00:13:13.66\00:13:15.96 But the Protestant Reformation was 00:13:15.99\00:13:18.39 on an altogether different level. 00:13:18.43\00:13:20.26 ¤[Music]¤ 00:13:20.30\00:13:25.77 Christianity began with people such as Peter and James 00:13:25.80\00:13:29.10 and John and Paul and Silas and Timothy, 00:13:29.14\00:13:32.41 carrying forward the message of the gospel. 00:13:32.44\00:13:35.28 But after a few centuries, 00:13:35.31\00:13:36.54 that message began to get clouded. 00:13:36.58\00:13:39.78 When the Roman Empire officially accepted Christianity 00:13:39.81\00:13:42.42 and called off its persecution of the church, 00:13:42.45\00:13:45.75 faith in Jesus became popular. 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.92 Unfortunately, it also became corrupt. 00:13:47.96\00:13:51.99 Jesus had warned His disciples, 00:13:52.03\00:13:53.86 saying to them in Luke 6 and verse 26, 00:13:53.90\00:13:55.80 “Woe unto you when all men speak well of you.” 00:13:55.83\00:14:00.94 Instead of the Bible deciding what Christians should believe, 00:14:00.97\00:14:04.27 church councils and bishops, 00:14:04.31\00:14:06.37 even Roman emperors like Constantine, 00:14:06.41\00:14:08.71 began making these decisions.
