I'm John Bradshaw. 00:02:08.49\00:02:11.09 Thanks for joining me. 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.40 You wonder how it can happen. 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.20 I mean, we're a long way into the 21st century now, 00:02:15.23\00:02:18.87 and yet the problem is as bad, in fact, 00:02:18.90\00:02:20.94 the problem is worse now than it's ever been before. 00:02:20.97\00:02:27.08 CNN reported that a Pakistani man worked seven days a week 00:02:27.11\00:02:31.61 in a cell-phone store in Hong Kong. 00:02:31.65\00:02:34.95 He slept on the floor of the store 00:02:34.98\00:02:36.58 and was regularly beaten by his employer. 00:02:36.62\00:02:39.65 He was sent home to Pakistan 00:02:39.69\00:02:41.29 without having been paid one cent. 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.59 When he complained about his treatment, 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.13 associates of his employer 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.16 threatened the lives of him and his family. 00:02:49.20\00:02:53.00 CNN also told the story of two Bangladeshi men 00:02:53.03\00:02:56.27 who paid six thousand dollars each 00:02:56.30\00:02:58.04 to secure work at a hotel in Scotland. 00:02:58.07\00:03:01.61 They were told they would earn $22,500 a year. 00:03:01.64\00:03:04.65 When they got there, 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.05 they found that had been changed to $125 a week, $6,500 a year. 00:03:06.08\00:03:12.65 And then they didn't even get that much. 00:03:12.69\00:03:16.32 When they complained about the treatment they were receiving, 00:03:16.36\00:03:19.79 they were told by their employer, “I am sponsoring you. 00:03:19.83\00:03:22.93 If you complain, I will withdraw my sponsorship, 00:03:22.96\00:03:26.47 you'll be here illegally, and you'll be arrested.” 00:03:26.50\00:03:31.34 And then there's the 14-year-old middle-schooler 00:03:31.37\00:03:33.91 who was picked on by her classmates. 00:03:33.94\00:03:37.48 An older girl befriended her 00:03:37.51\00:03:39.61 before introducing her to a man in his thirties. 00:03:39.65\00:03:42.92 That man treated her wonderfully, 00:03:42.95\00:03:46.25 before asking her for favors. 00:03:46.29\00:03:50.76 Before long, she was servicing forty men a day. 00:03:50.79\00:03:56.60 Forty. 00:03:57.97\00:03:59.53 She found herself trapped in a web 00:03:59.57\00:04:01.60 she simply didn't know how to get out of. 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.87 And when she talked about leaving, 00:04:03.91\00:04:06.27 a gun appeared and her life was threatened. 00:04:06.31\00:04:10.21 ¤[Music]¤ 00:04:10.25\00:04:20.29 ¤[Music]¤ 00:04:20.29\00:04:25.29 Human trafficking is the second most lucrative crime 00:04:25.33\00:04:28.36 in the world, after drug trafficking. 00:04:28.40\00:04:31.07 And 22 percent of all human trafficking victims 00:04:31.10\00:04:33.60 are forced into prostitution. 00:04:33.64\00:04:36.57 Based on the numbers we have, that would mean that right now 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.67 there are more than four and a half million women and girls 00:04:39.71\00:04:43.45 who have been forced into prostitution, 00:04:43.48\00:04:46.31 against their will. 00:04:46.35\00:04:48.52 And they're not all somewhere else. 00:04:48.55\00:04:51.02 Some of see it from where you are, 00:05:00.10\00:05:01.86 the problem is real. 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.70 It's very real. 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.33 Girls as young as 12 or younger. 00:05:06.37\00:05:08.97 Mothers who are forced to leave their families 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.01 to find “work” far from home. 00:05:11.04\00:05:13.27 Men forced to toil as laborers without pay 00:05:13.31\00:05:17.98 and without any hope of escaping their difficult existence. 00:05:18.01\00:05:22.88 Trafficking sees people pressed into forced labor, 00:05:22.92\00:05:26.15 child labor, domestic servitude, bonded labor, 00:05:26.19\00:05:30.26 where people are forced to work to pay off debt, 00:05:30.29\00:05:33.36 even the debts of ancestors in some cases, 00:05:33.40\00:05:36.20 sex trafficking, or child sex 00:06:06.63\00:06:11.77 If this was the United States, 00:06:11.80\00:06:14.07 that would be the equivalent of 32 million people. 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.51 That's an enormous amount of people 00:06:18.54\00:06:20.38 from this little country who have been 00:06:20.41\00:06:22.61 forced against their will into lives of slavery. 00:06:22.64\00:06:26.85 >>Irina Arap: So imagine a 35-year-old 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.78 located between Romania and Ukraine. 00:12:26.81\00:12:29.81 For more than 50 years Moldova was a part of the Soviet Union. 00:12:29.84\00:12:34.88 Over the centuries, it's been the scene of invasions 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.55 and revolutions, not uncommon for Europe. 00:12:37.59\00:12:41.59 It's estimated that 1 in 100 Moldovans is trafficked. 00:12:41.62\00:12:46.83 If 00:12:53.54\00:12:57.24 who are being forced against their will 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.44 into lives of slavery. 00:12:59.47\00:13:02.54 Remember what the State Department says: 00:13:02.58\00:13:05.01 “...through the use of force, fraud or coercion.” 00:13:05.05\00:13:09.32 Many of them forced to work in the sex industry. 00:13:09.35\00:13:13.09 >>Irina: She would get the money from the recruiter to, 00:13:13.12\00:13:17.03 to have her passport done, most of the time they do not have, 00:13:17.06\00:13:20.80 they do not hold their passports. 00:13:20.83\00:13:23.47 Then she might get some money to travel. 00:13:23.50\00:13:26.47 It can be by bus, by train, or by plane, 00:13:26.50\00:13:29.34 recently it's not a problem; it's affordable. 00:13:29.37\00:13:32.71 But this is also something that they are 00:13:32.74\00:13:36.08 afterwards constrained with, 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.61 because you have a debt to me so you must work for this to, 00:13:37.65\00:13:44.79 to give me back the money. 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.06 Sometimes, the exploitation occurs immediately, 00:13:47.09\00:13:50.13 or sometimes she could be given some time 00:13:50.16\00:13:54.20 to adapt to the situation. 00:13:54.23\00:13:56.36 She will be in an apartment with other 10 ladies or so, 00:13:56.40\00:14:02.24 if we talk about sexual exploitation. 00:14:02.27\00:14:05.21 And then she will get, you know, this physical abuse sometimes, 00:14:05.24\00:14:09.58 or psychological abuse, and the exploitation can, can go on, 00:14:09.61\00:14:17.59 I mean, start immediately. 00:14:17.62\00:14:20.09 For example, the last case I dealt with, 00:14:21.06\00:14:24.16 I think in middle February, was about nine Moldavan citizens 00:14:24.19\00:14:32.47 who were exploited for labor in the Russian Federation. 00:14:32.50\00:14:35.90 They were hiding in their rooms just to, 00:14:35.94\00:14:38.64 only one of them had a cell phone. 00:14:38.67\00:14:40.91 But they somehow managed to threaten the trafficker 00:14:40.94\00:14:45.11 that they would call the police. 00:14:45.15\00:14:47.25 Nevertheless, one woman was, um, also exploited. 00:14:47.28\00:14:54.26 And because she tried to escape, she was kept in the outside 00:14:54.29\00:14:59.56 for two hours with almost no clothes on her, at minus 20. 00:14:59.59\00:15:05.13 So this was a sort of punishment. 00:15:05.17\00:15:07.10 But, nevertheless, they managed to escape. 00:15:07.67\00:15:09.90 They retrieved their passports. 00:15:09.94\00:15:11.94 So they were repatriated to Moldova. 00:15:11.97\00:15:15.21 But in regards to the criminal investigation, 00:15:15.24\00:15:18.91 I cannot tell the stage of it. 00:15:18.95\00:15:22.02 >>John: Human trafficking is simply a response 00:15:26.32\00:15:28.39 to a demand that exists. 00:15:28.42\00:15:30.39 Because prostitution is treated so blithely 00:15:30.43\00:15:33.63 by so many in society today you know, boys will be boys, 00:15:33.66\00:15:37.87 it's a victimless crime, it's the world's oldest profession, 00:15:37.90\00:15:42.24 makes it possible for trafficking to flourish. 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.61 It can operate in the shadows of an evil profession which itself 00:15:44.64\00:15:48.78 thrives in every major city in the United States and, 00:15:48.81\00:15:51.98 it's fair to say, in every major city throughout the world. 00:15:52.01\00:15:55.72 And because from a distance one prostitute looks pretty much 00:15:55.75\00:15:58.55 like another, you can't tell whether that woman 00:15:58.59\00:16:01.42 standing on the street corner is pursuing a career choice 00:16:01.46\00:16:05.59 or is being trafficked against her will. 00:16:05.63\00:16:08.40 It was reported that in Columbus, Ohio, 00:16:08.43\00:16:11.13 of the 1,000 prostitutes put behind bars every year, 00:16:11.17\00:16:15.50 92% are being trafficked. 00:16:15.54\00:16:18.64 That's almost every single one. 00:16:18.67\00:16:21.41 So what does this have to do with the Bible? 00:16:21.44\00:16:23.81 Everything. 00:16:23.85\00:16:26.08 Jesus said in John 8:36, 00:16:26.11\00:16:28.48 “Therefore if the Son makes you free, 00:16:28.52\00:16:30.82 you shall be free indeed.” 00:16:30.85\00:16:33.12 Now, consider this: 00:16:33.15\00:16:34.09 With 21 million people being trafficked 00:16:34.12\00:16:36.46 in the world right now, 00:16:36.49\00:16:37.83 between 600,000 and 800,000 people are 00:16:37.86\00:16:41.06 trafficked across international borders every year. 00:16:41.10\00:16:44.27 Eighty percent are female, and half are children. 00:16:44.30\00:16:48.40 With between 14,500 and 17,500 being trafficked 00:16:48.44\00:16:53.07 into the United States every year, 00:16:53.11\00:16:55.64 that's 50 a day, every day, do you think it's only atheists 00:16:55.68\00:17:00.72 doing the trafficking, or the using? 00:17:00.75\00:17:03.92 You see, God's desire is that people are free. 00:17:03.95\00:17:07.42 And yet there's another form of slavery 00:17:07.46\00:17:09.99 that affects even more people than human trafficking. 00:17:10.03\00:17:14.66 I'll tell you more in just a moment. 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.73 ¤[Music]¤ 00:17:16.77\00:17:25.84 >>John: The flight attendant noticed her. 00:17:28.18\00:17:29.78 She appeared to be 14 maybe 15 years of age 00:17:29.81\00:17:33.52 and she looked out of place. 00:17:33.55\00:17:35.92 She was disheveled, her hair was greasy, 00:17:35.95\00:17:38.99 she looked uncomfortable. 00:17:39.02\00:17:41.46 And she was seated next to a man 00:17:41.49\00:17:42.92 who was considerably older and very well dressed. 00:17:42.96\00:17:47.13 So the flight attendant alerted the pilot, 00:17:47.20\00:17:49.80 the pilot alerted authorities on the ground, 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.33 and when the flight from Seattle landed in San Francisco, 00:17:52.37\00:17:56.71 law enforcement officials were waiting to intercept the man, 00:17:56.74\00:18:00.68 and to release the girl and return her to a much better 00:18:18.86\00:18:20.70 It really does take place. 00:18:20.73\00:18:22.33 It might be taking place at the mall in your neighborhood 00:18:22.36\00:18:25.23 as young people are groomed by unscrupulous men 00:18:25.27\00:18:28.77 who would turn them over to a life of misery and shame. 00:18:28.80\00:18:33.17 I'd like to encourage you if you suspect that you are witnessing 00:18:33.21\00:18:36.71 00:21:05.16\00:21:12.80 >>John: Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written, 00:21:17.54\00:21:20.68 in the Republic of Moldova. 00:21:20.71\00:21:24.08 It's a country with a turbulent history littered 00:21:24.11\00:21:26.21 with conquests and invasions. 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.82 In the 1940s and ‘50s, 250,000 Moldovans 00:21:28.85\00:21:32.89 were sent to labor camps in Siberia. 00:21:32.92\00:21:36.16 During World War II, thousands of Jews perished here. 00:21:36.19\00:21:41.16 But the crime against humanity that plagues 00:21:41.20\00:21:43.63 Moldova today is the same as that which plagues 00:21:43.67\00:21:46.87 societies all over the world. 00:21:46.90\00:21:50.01 Human trafficking right now flourishes in the United States. 00:21:50.04\00:21:54.41 And what that means is, you can buy a human being, 00:21:54.44\00:21:59.58 usually a woman or a girl, 00:21:59.61\00:22:01.75 for the purpose of sexual exploitation. 00:22:01.78\00:22:04.52 And you can own her 00:22:04.55\00:22:06.52 just like you would own a pair of shoes or a dog. 00:22:06.55\00:22:12.36 Except very few dogs were ever treated as badly 00:22:12.39\00:22:16.03 as a woman who is trafficked. 00:22:16.06\00:22:17.90 There's a growing awareness in Moldova and around the world 00:22:17.93\00:22:21.40 of the problem of human trafficking, 00:22:21.44\00:22:24.27 with more light being shown on the subject, 00:22:24.31\00:22:26.14 and more and more people willing to lend their support 00:22:26.17\00:22:28.34 to the fight against it. 00:22:28.38\00:22:30.51 There's one thing, and only one thing, 00:22:30.55\00:22:33.45 that will actually fix the problem. 00:22:33.48\00:22:36.72 You can't blame the women and the girls involved. 00:22:36.75\00:22:39.29 No female chooses to be trafficked. 00:22:39.32\00:22:42.56 If you locked them all up, 00:22:42.59\00:22:44.03 all you'd be doing would be punishing the victims. 00:22:44.06\00:22:47.23 And if you locked them up, 00:22:47.23\00:22:48.60 there'd be a fresh batch of victims back out on the streets 00:22:48.63\00:22:51.53 to take their place in no time at all. 00:22:51.57\00:22:55.40 The reason human trafficking exists is economics. 00:22:55.44\00:22:59.34 It's a case of supply and demand. 00:22:59.37\00:23:01.88 If unscrupulous businessmen wouldn't exploit workers, 00:23:01.91\00:23:05.15 you wouldn't have forced labor. 00:23:05.18\00:23:07.35 And if men wouldn't pay money to exploit trafficked women, 00:23:07.38\00:23:11.35 the problem would just go away. 00:23:11.39\00:23:14.06 But the challenge is, there's a market for this. 00:23:14.09\00:23:17.36 The problem is, there are sick men who will pay money for sex, 00:23:17.39\00:23:22.06 and in many cases knowing full well that the victim involved 00:23:22.10\00:23:25.50 is trafficked, or illegal. 00:23:25.53\00:23:28.67 And who are these sick men? 00:23:28.70\00:23:30.87 You might be thinking it's the creepy guy 00:23:30.91\00:23:32.47 who lives down the street from you. 00:23:32.51\00:23:34.54 Ask the experts, and they'll tell you. 00:23:34.58\00:23:37.71 These are schoolteachers and policemen 00:23:37.75\00:23:40.58 and doctors and you-name-it. 00:23:40.62\00:23:44.15 Everyday people. 00:23:44.19\00:23:46.25 Most likely someone you know. 00:23:46.29\00:23:49.46 The problem is hidden in plain view. 00:23:49.49\00:23:53.63 Changing laws might certainly help. 00:23:53.66\00:23:55.53 But laws get broken every day. 00:23:55.56\00:23:58.70 We could take some time to talk about the climate in society 00:23:58.73\00:24:02.17 which fuels this sort of demand. 00:24:02.20\00:24:05.24 The objectification of women, 00:24:05.27\00:24:07.61 and the sexually hyper-charged society 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.31 in which we live that creates demand 00:24:10.35\00:24:13.82 and then presents this as, as some sort of option. 00:24:13.85\00:24:16.95 Ultimately, this is a problem of the human heart. 00:24:16.99\00:24:21.29 You see, there's another kind of slavery. 00:24:21.32\00:24:24.69 Let the Apostle Paul explain in Romans 6:16. 00:24:24.73\00:24:28.13 “Do you not know that to whom you present 00:24:28.16\00:24:30.23 yourselves slaves to obey, 00:24:30.27\00:24:32.93 you are that one's slaves whom you obey, 00:24:32.97\00:24:36.07 whether of sin leading to death, 00:24:36.10\00:24:38.67 or of obedience leading to righteousness?” 00:24:38.71\00:24:41.98 Thankfully, there's a way out. 00:24:42.01\00:24:44.38 Verses 17 and 18: 00:24:44.41\00:24:46.25 “But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, 00:24:46.28\00:24:50.39 yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine 00:24:50.42\00:24:53.72 to which you were delivered. 00:24:53.76\00:24:55.52 And having been set free from sin, 00:24:55.56\00:24:58.43 you became slaves of righteousness.” 00:24:58.46\00:25:01.43 Now, notice: The Bible says that those who are the slaves of sin 00:25:01.46\00:25:05.87 the King James uses the word “servants” 00:25:05.90\00:25:08.34 those who are slaves of sin are slaves of the one they 00:25:08.37\00:25:13.34 have chosen to serve. 00:25:13.38\00:25:15.88 See, ultimately, sin is a choice. 00:25:15.91\00:25:20.22 It might not always feel like that. 00:25:20.25\00:25:22.35 It might feel that it's less of a choice 00:25:22.38\00:25:24.55 if you've become accustomed to living a life of sin, 00:25:24.59\00:25:27.92 and more a matter of being on autopilot. 00:25:27.96\00:25:30.59 But the Bible is clear. 00:25:30.63\00:25:32.33 You can choose to be either the slave of sin 00:25:32.36\00:25:36.63 or the slave of righteousness. 00:25:36.67\00:25:39.10 Romans 6, verse 20. 00:25:39.13\00:25:40.84 “For when you were slaves of sin, 00:25:40.87\00:25:43.10 you were free in regard to righteousness.” 00:25:43.14\00:25:45.87 And verse 22. “But now having been set free from sin, 00:25:45.91\00:25:50.08 and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, 00:25:50.11\00:25:55.32 and the end, everlasting life.” 00:25:55.35\00:25:58.32 So a person who is the slave of sin 00:25:58.35\00:26:01.72 can become instead the slave of righteousness. 00:26:01.76\00:26:05.06 The servant of righteousness. 00:26:05.09\00:26:07.50 A person can learn to love doing right as much as he or she 00:26:07.56\00:26:11.23 ever loved committing sin. 00:26:11.27\00:26:14.30 In 1 Corinthians, chapter 6, Paul speaks to a group of people 00:26:14.34\00:26:17.61 who were adulterers and fornicators and idolators 00:26:17.64\00:26:20.74 and thieves and drunkards and so forth 00:26:20.78\00:26:23.11 and he says this to them in verse 11, 00:26:23.14\00:26:26.28 “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, 00:26:26.31\00:26:30.45 but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified 00:26:30.49\00:26:33.09 in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 00:26:33.12\00:26:37.86 That's what God can do for you. 00:26:37.89\00:26:40.96 If you let Him. 00:26:40.96\00:26:42.80 And so it's right to hope and pray and work 00:26:42.83\00:26:45.33 that those who are caught in the grip of human trafficking 00:26:45.37\00:26:47.74 find liberation, freedom, find hope in their lives. 00:26:47.77\00:26:52.21 And if you're caught in spiritual slavery, 00:26:52.24\00:26:56.24 you can find that same hope and liberation and freedom 00:26:56.28\00:27:01.08 through Jesus Christ. 00:27:01.12\00:27:02.92 Because “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” 00:27:02.95\00:27:09.86 ¤[Music]¤ 00:27:09.89\00:27:17.40 You want
