the extent and the potential

Very early in the
Bible we read about the power

of the Holy Spirit.
In the creation story,

Genesis 1:2, the
Bible says, "And the Spirit

of the Lord moved upon
the face of the waters."

The Old Testament
narrative talks often about
00:06:12.50\00:06:15.00
the Holy Spirit.
Samson, the strongest man
00:06:15.00\00:06:18.37
who ever lived. King
Saul, Israel's first King.
00:06:18.37\00:06:21.54
Both of these men received
the power of the Holy Spirit
00:06:21.54\00:06:25.78
at pivotal times in their lives.
David, who was rent with anguish
00:06:25.78\00:06:32.09
over his sin with Bathsheba,
plead with God in Psalm 51.
00:06:32.09\00:06:36.79
This is what he said: "Cast
me not away from thy presence

and take not thy
Holy Spirit from me."

And here is what Isaiah quoted
by Jesus of Nazareth in Luke 4:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon

to preach good
tidings unto the meek.

He has sent me to bind up

and the opening of the prison

The Old Testament speaks not

only about the existence
of the Holy Spirit, but also

about the power
of the Holy Spirit.

So, it is rather
remarkable that when we get over

to the New Testament,
and we find Paul speaking
00:07:12.96\00:07:15.90
to certain believers at Ephesus,
that he had this exchange.

He asked them whether they
had received the Holy Spirit
00:07:19.93\00:07:23.77
and they responded to
him in Acts 19:2 by saying,
00:07:23.77\00:07:27.74
"We have not even heard
that there is a Holy Spirit."
00:07:27.74\00:07:32.15
Incredibly, they had somehow
missed this very important
00:07:32.15\00:07:35.72
biblical teaching.
Now when we look through
00:07:35.72\00:07:38.65
the Bible, we discover
that the work of the Holy Spirit
00:07:38.65\00:07:41.86
has at least four
distinct functions.
00:07:41.86\00:07:45.26
One is guiding into
truth. Jesus spoke of this
00:07:45.26\00:07:49.53
in John 16:13, when he said
"howbeit when He, the Spirit
00:07:49.53\00:07:54.84
of Truth is coming, He
will guide you into all truth."
00:07:54.84\00:07:59.84
This means that in order
for the Holy Spirit to change
00:07:59.84\00:08:02.64
us we must first
see our true condition
00:08:02.64\00:08:06.58
and the Bible makes it clear
that the Holy Spirit helps us
00:08:06.58\00:08:10.02
to understand our true condition
through the law of God.
00:08:10.02\00:08:13.99
Paul said in
Romans 3:20, "By the law
00:08:13.99\00:08:17.73
is the knowledge of
sin." And Galatians 3:24 says,
00:08:17.73\00:08:21.63
"the law was our schoolmaster
to bring us to Christ that we
00:08:21.63\00:08:26.03
might be justified by faith.
The Spirit of God helps us to
00:08:26.03\00:08:30.71
see what we are really
like in relation to the holiness
00:08:30.71\00:08:34.44
of God. Another
work of the Holy Spirit
00:08:34.44\00:08:37.51
is to bring conviction
of sin and righteousness.
00:08:37.51\00:08:42.08
Jesus was speaking in John
16:8 when he said that the Holy
00:08:42.08\00:08:46.22
Spirit would reprove the world
of sin and of righteousness
00:08:46.22\00:08:51.83
and of judgment. You
see, it's not enough for us
00:08:51.83\00:08:55.33
just to be
convinced of what is truth.

What God wants is for his
people to be convicted of their
00:08:57.53\00:09:01.70
need to grow in the
grace of God and that too

is the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit provide us

with power for
obedience. Once we have accepted

the conviction brought
by the Holy Spirit regarding

the need for change in
our lives, the Holy Spirit

gives us the
ability to obey God.

Now, the man with a drinking
problem probably knows that he

has a drinking problem.
Knowledge is not his problem.

But, his problem is:
Where does he find the strength,

the ability to be able
to put down the bottle.
00:09:34.37\00:09:37.24
Most people who lose
their temper know they
00:09:37.24\00:09:39.51
shouldn't lose their
temper. This is not a question
00:09:39.51\00:09:42.04
of knowledge. The
question is how does one
00:09:42.04\00:09:45.38
find the power to break
that cycle of frustration
00:09:45.38\00:09:49.35
and eruption? This is
where the Holy Spirit's
00:09:49.35\00:09:52.79
power comes in. Now
this is Paul, writing to
00:09:52.79\00:09:55.46
the church in Rome, "For what
the law could not do in that it
00:09:55.46\00:09:59.39
was weak through the flesh,
God, sending his own son in
00:09:59.39\00:10:03.30
the likeness of sinful
flesh and for sin condemned sin
00:10:03.30\00:10:07.84
in the flesh,
that the righteousness
00:10:07.84\00:10:10.34
of the law might be
fulfilled in us who walk
00:10:10.34\00:10:13.54
not after the flesh,
but after the Spirit."

Romans 8:3, 4.
Paul says this later

in the same chapter. "For
if ye live after the flesh,

ye through the Spirit do

mortify the deeds of the body,
ye shall live." Romans 8:13.

I want you to notice this.
The Bible promises you that you

don't need to stay stuck in
the sin that breaks your heart

and causes guilt and
shame and causes pain to others.

God promises you the Holy
Spirit so that the righteousness

of God can be
fulfilled in your life.

It's through the Holy
Spirit's power that the works

of the flesh are set aside.
Tragically, a lot of people go

their entire lives
without learning this profound
00:11:00.66\00:11:04.06
spiritual truth and that is
the Holy Spirit has the ability

to give a person the
power over themselves.

I never how clear this
came to me one day when a friend
00:11:12.33\00:11:15.10
of mine said, "John, I have
learned that the Holy Spirit
00:11:15.10\00:11:19.21
is more powerful than self."
That realization absolutely
00:11:19.21\00:11:24.35
changed that man's life.
You see, a person with a dirty
00:11:24.35\00:11:27.68
mind might not realize
but the Holy Spirit has
00:11:27.68\00:11:30.69
the ability to take that life
and remake that mind so that
00:11:30.69\00:11:35.02
from this moment on, it's
habitually pure and clean.
00:11:35.02\00:11:40.33
Another work of the Holy
Spirit is to give us power
00:11:40.33\00:11:43.60
for witnessing. It
is important for us
00:11:43.60\00:11:46.47
to understand. In
fact, it is vital for us
00:11:46.47\00:11:49.04
to understand that
the ability to share Jesus
00:11:49.04\00:11:51.97
with others comes to us
through the Holy Spirit.
00:11:51.97\00:11:56.28
Now, this is what the
Bible says in Acts 2:1.

It's the Jewish
feast of Pentecost.

The Bible says, "And
when the Day of Pentecost

was fully come, they
(that's the believers) were all

with one accord in one place.
Jesus had prayed for this kind

of unity among his
followers prior to his suffering
00:12:14.40\00:12:17.37
and death. In John
17, we read these words:
00:12:17.37\00:12:21.94
"That they all may be
one as Thou Father art in me
00:12:21.94\00:12:27.01
and I in Thee.
That they also may
00:12:27.01\00:12:30.61
be one in us. That
the world may believe
00:12:30.61\00:12:34.22
that Thou has sent
me." But notice something.
00:12:34.22\00:12:38.89
Before Jesus had prayed
for unity, he said this.

"Sanctify them
through thy truth.
00:12:43.63\00:12:46.06
Thy word is truth. And
for their sakes, I sanctify

myself that they also might
be sanctified through the truth.

In other words, sanctification
through God's word of truth

is necessary before
true Christian unity

can take place. You
see, Jesus did not die

simply so that we could
be forgiven of our sins,

as important as that is.
In addition to forgiveness,

Jesus died so that
we could be changed.

He didn't die so we could stay
stuck in our sins, but so we

could experience
transformation through the power
00:13:20.96\00:13:24.70
of the Holy
Spirit. Now that's power.

It's a kind of a power that many
people have never experienced.

It's the sort of power
that far too many people

can't even imagine.
Jesus, through the Holy Spirit

accomplishes this
work in the lives of those

who believe in him and
when this work is done,

we'll see the type of mass
conversion that was experienced

at Pentecost. Peter
made it clear in the Book

of Acts that powerful witnessing
is given to those who have

received the Holy
Spirit for obedience and we are

his witnesses of these things
and so is the Holy Ghost whom
00:13:59.30\00:14:03.41
God hath given to
them that obey him.

It's a liberating Biblical
truth that when God gives

the gift of the Holy
Spirit, the Spirit of God brings

transformational power
into the life of a believer.

passed since their Lord

was taken to heaven.
Just a few weeks have passed

and what could have done this?

about this kind of change

Just one thing: The

Apart from the bodily

Generous gifts were brought

needs of the less fortunate

The Holy Spirit brings a
revival into a person's life

Yes, it can be difficult

under the blessing of God, flew

into a rage and murdered a man.
But then it talks about how God

lead Moses into Midian and how
Moses submitted to the gentle

discipline of the Holy Spirit.
God was then able to use this

great man of God to lead
his people out of Egypt and on

The Bible talks to us about

man after God's own heart.

What a sinner needs is power,

and cleansing power.

And we receive that
through the Holy Spirit.
