¤[Theme music]¤ 00:01:30.05\00:01:40.10 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:01:40.10\00:01:47.40 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.04 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:01:51.07\00:01:52.11 Thanks for joining me, in Zimbabwe, Africa. 00:01:52.14\00:01:55.28 And today you're not only joining me, 00:01:55.31\00:01:57.65 but the presenters from It Is Written Canada, Chris Holland, 00:01:57.68\00:02:01.38 and It Is Written Oceania, Gary Kent. 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.95 Gentlemen, thanks for joining me today. 00:02:03.99\00:02:05.29 >>Chris Holland: Glad to be here, John. 00:02:05.32\00:02:06.39 >>Gary Kent: Pleasure to be here. 00:02:06.42\00:02:07.66 >>John: I think this is the first time we've done anything 00:02:07.69\00:02:08.69 quite like this. 00:02:08.72\00:02:09.29 >>Chris: I think it is. 00:02:09.32\00:02:10.23 >>John: So, so thanks for making a little 00:02:10.26\00:02:11.73 It Is Written history today. 00:02:11.76\00:02:12.86 >>Chris: Yes. 00:02:12.89\00:02:13.80 >>John: Now, we're here for a purpose. 00:02:13.83\00:02:14.96 We want to open up the Bible together and, uh, 00:02:15.00\00:02:17.80 discuss one of the great chapters of the Bible. 00:02:17.83\00:02:20.24 Now, before we do that, the reason that we're in Zimbabwe 00:02:20.27\00:02:23.64 and not the United States or Australia or Canada 00:02:23.67\00:02:26.04 is because we've been here conducting Bible meetings 00:02:26.07\00:02:28.04 in the city of Gweru. 00:02:28.08\00:02:29.14 It's been a blessing, hasn't it? 00:02:29.18\00:02:30.11 >>Chris: It has been a tremendous blessing. 00:02:30.15\00:02:31.35 >>Gary: What a privilege. 00:02:31.38\00:02:32.51 >>John: Yeah, fantastic. But while we're here, 00:02:32.55\00:02:34.18 we'll open up the Bible and we'll discuss a subject 00:02:34.22\00:02:36.58 that I think's going to be a real blessing. 00:02:36.62\00:02:37.92 >>Chris: That sounds great. 00:02:37.95\00:02:38.75 >>John: Great chapters of the Bible. 00:02:38.79\00:02:40.49 Let's start with Matthew, chapter 5, 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.76 where we find the Beatitudes. 00:02:42.79\00:02:45.06 Matthew, chapter 5 and verse 7. How about reading that for us? 00:02:45.09\00:02:49.30 >>Gary: Blessed are the merciful, 00:02:49.33\00:02:51.17 for they will be shown mercy. 00:02:51.20\00:02:52.97 >>John: Okay. How do we apply that to contemporary life today? 00:02:53.00\00:02:56.47 >>Gary: It's, it's, it's interesting, John, 00:02:56.50\00:02:58.67 because here we are reminded of the reaping and sowing, 00:02:58.71\00:03:04.78 or sowing and reaping concept, that, uh, Jesus speaks about. 00:03:04.81\00:03:10.62 We're also reminded here that those who show mercy 00:03:10.65\00:03:15.09 will receive mercy. 00:03:15.12\00:03:17.16 And I think that the, the, this is also true that those 00:03:17.19\00:03:21.10 who know mercy will show mercy. 00:03:21.13\00:03:25.60 Those who've experienced forgiveness, mercy, compassion 00:03:25.63\00:03:29.44 in their life will be those who will share that with others. 00:03:29.47\00:03:33.24 >>John: Now, what we see here is that mercy 00:03:33.27\00:03:36.48 is, is obviously highly prized in the eyes of Jesus. 00:03:36.51\00:03:40.82 But mercy, or being merciful, is a characteristic of God Himself. 00:03:40.85\00:03:44.75 The Lord God, merciful and gracious. 00:03:44.79\00:03:48.46 So in the beatitudes Jesus is saying, 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.66 “Here's how to live,” saying, “Here's how to be.” 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.99 I think what he's saying is not go do this, 00:03:53.03\00:03:54.93 but this is what will happen when the presence 00:03:54.96\00:03:58.40 of the Holy Spirit is in your life. 00:03:58.43\00:04:00.47 God's plan is to remake us in His image. 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.47 And He says, this is a big one “be merciful.” 00:04:03.51\00:04:06.24 You touched on forgiveness. 00:04:06.27\00:04:07.41 Chris, talk about forgiveness for a little bit. 00:04:07.44\00:04:10.31 >>Chris: Well, you know, it's interesting. 00:04:10.35\00:04:11.31 Forgiveness, mercy, this, these are 00:04:11.35\00:04:13.15 just like we're talking about, 00:04:13.18\00:04:14.28 you know, big chapters of the Bible. 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.65 Mercy is a central theme of the Bible, 00:04:16.69\00:04:19.69 where God gives to us that which we do not deserve. 00:04:19.72\00:04:22.89 And in the context of forgiveness, 00:04:22.92\00:04:25.33 when we talk about forgiveness, 00:04:25.36\00:04:26.39 forgiveness means we're giving up our right, 00:04:26.43\00:04:28.80 so to speak, to retaliate. 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.17 And so the bible is quite clear, the wages of sin is death. 00:04:31.20\00:04:34.87 And so from a practical standpoint, we are deserving, 00:04:34.90\00:04:38.74 or the reward we've earned, 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.14 because we have all fallen short of the glory of God, 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.34 we've all sinned, is death. 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.25 But God in His mercy, according to Romans 5, 00:04:45.28\00:04:49.42 sent His Son while we were yet sinners, 00:04:49.45\00:04:51.62 so He would die for us. 00:04:51.65\00:04:53.02 God paid the penalty for us, giving us not what we deserve, 00:04:53.05\00:04:58.49 but rather, giving us what He desires in our life. 00:04:58.53\00:05:01.46 >>John: We're looking in Matthew 5, 00:05:01.50\00:05:02.63 and over in Matthew, chapter 6, Jesus was really clear. 00:05:02.66\00:05:06.37 He said, “If you don't forgive others, God won't forgive you.” 00:05:06.40\00:05:09.74 >>Gary: Yes 00:05:09.77\00:05:10.87 Now, that's, that's time to sit up and take notice. 00:05:10.91\00:05:13.61 This is, this is real Christianity. 00:05:13.64\00:05:16.64 This comes down to, why, this, 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.45 this rubs my fur the wrong way. 00:05:18.48\00:05:20.15 I want to retaliate. 00:05:20.18\00:05:21.22 I want to strike back. 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.02 God is talking about mercy and saying, 00:05:23.05\00:05:25.12 “No, no, show mercy, show grace to those who don't deserve it.” 00:05:25.15\00:05:28.16 There's a story that deals with this in Matthew, chapter 18. 00:05:28.19\00:05:31.06 And this is where Jesus said: The Kingdom of heaven, 00:05:31.09\00:05:33.76 is likened unto a certain king 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.26 who would take account of his servants. 00:05:35.30\00:05:36.80 You remember, there's this fellow who owed the king 00:05:36.83\00:05:38.60 an, a gargantuan sum, 10,000 talents. 00:05:38.63\00:05:42.17 It's a ludicrous debt that he has. 00:05:42.20\00:05:45.17 And he can't, he can't pay it, 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.01 but he falls down and worships the man, 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.84 and he says: "Lord, have patience and I will pay it". 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.31 The man was moved with compassion. 00:05:52.35\00:05:54.45 And he loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 00:05:54.48\00:05:57.62 A gargantuan debt. 00:05:57.65\00:05:58.92 >>Gary: Yes. 00:05:58.95\00:05:59.89 >>John: And then the same servant went out, 00:05:59.92\00:06:01.22 found one of his fellow servants that owed him a hundred pence. 00:06:01.26\00:06:04.09 Comparatively just nothing. 00:06:04.13\00:06:07.00 And he forced him to pay it. 00:06:07.03\00:06:08.30 The man said, “I cannot.” 00:06:08.33\00:06:09.90 He cast him into prison until he paid the debt. 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.90 Jesus was not impressed, as you might expect. 00:06:12.93\00:06:16.81 Now, now we've tied mercy to forgiveness. 00:06:16.84\00:06:19.54 I don't think that's wrong. 00:06:19.57\00:06:20.38 I think that's accurate. 00:06:20.41\00:06:21.41 But are there other ways to talk about mercy? 00:06:21.44\00:06:23.38 How do we show mercy on a daily basis. 00:06:23.41\00:06:25.11 Okay, somebody backs into your car in the parking lot, 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.52 and what are you supposed to do? 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.55 Hey, it's okay, I'll have mercy on you. 00:06:28.58\00:06:30.45 You could, right? You could. 00:06:30.49\00:06:33.25 >>Chris: Yeah, you know, you could have mercy by saying, 00:06:33.29\00:06:35.26 “Hey, this is okay.” And, and you know, 00:06:35.29\00:06:36.93 we have to understand that, 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.36 that sometimes you need to take the rightful course with things, 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.73 and exchange insurance. 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.00 But if somebody backs into your car and leaves a minor scratch, 00:06:43.03\00:06:47.97 do we really need to involve all that? 00:06:48.00\00:06:49.54 Can we just say, 00:06:49.57\00:06:50.94 “You know what? Hey, accidents happen. It's not a big deal.” 00:06:50.97\00:06:54.11 And so I think we can exercise mercy on a daily basis. 00:06:54.14\00:06:57.88 Let's bring it very close to home. 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.42 Our spouse says something unkind to us. 00:07:00.45\00:07:04.29 Do we kind of put that in our back pocket, 00:07:04.32\00:07:06.79 to be used in a later confrontation, 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.52 or do we exercise mercy and say, 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.33 “You know what? I'm gonna just leave that behind.” 00:07:12.36\00:07:15.30 >>John: Yeah, it's, it's, we look at God and we say, 00:07:15.33\00:07:18.30 “How did God treat people?” 00:07:18.33\00:07:20.24 The Lord is merciful and gracious, 00:07:20.27\00:07:22.70 slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 00:07:22.74\00:07:25.67 The concept is repeated in that one verse in the Psalms. 00:07:25.71\00:07:29.24 So it's important to God; ought to be important to us. 00:07:29.28\00:07:32.31 This is a character, characteristic of God. 00:07:32.35\00:07:35.52 This is a characteristic of God that God wants to see 00:07:35.55\00:07:37.65 demonstrated in our lives. 00:07:37.69\00:07:40.06 Sometimes you just got to swallow and move on, 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.22 or, or be big, and not make a big deal out of something small, 00:07:42.26\00:07:47.66 and let it go. 00:07:47.66\00:07:48.83 >>Gary: I think it's a, it's a, a personality trait, 00:07:48.86\00:07:51.97 a characteristic that is developed. 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.97 And as we understand the mercy we have been shown, 00:07:55.00\00:08:00.41 as told in that parable, 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.11 we are really under an obligation 00:08:03.14\00:08:07.12 to demonstrate a similar mercy to those 00:08:07.15\00:08:11.52 we come in contact with in everyday life. 00:08:11.55\00:08:14.49 Uh, if we've known mercy, we should show mercy. 00:08:14.52\00:08:18.26 >>John: So where do we find mercy? 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.93 If you want to know mercy, you go to the Bible. 00:08:19.96\00:08:22.16 You read the word of God. 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.33 You say, this is how God treated people. 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.83 This is how Jesus treated people. 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.54 There was a lady caught in the midst of sin, 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.24 dragged to the feet of Jesus. 00:08:30.27\00:08:31.74 They caught her in the act. 00:08:31.77\00:08:33.07 They, they set her up, really. 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.44 It was, it was a test to see how Jesus would handle her. 00:08:34.48\00:08:37.61 She was as, as guilty as sin. 00:08:37.65\00:08:39.98 And Jesus said, “I don't condemn you. 00:08:40.02\00:08:42.92 Go and sin no more.” 00:08:42.95\00:08:44.52 Man, we can be quick to condemn, can't we, people? 00:08:44.55\00:08:46.86 >>Chris: You know, and it's interesting, 00:08:46.89\00:08:48.19 in that story we often talk about the woman. 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.66 But there's another group that Jesus shows extreme mercy to, 00:08:50.69\00:08:53.50 and that is the Pharisees that bring her, 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.36 the religious leaders that bring her. 00:08:55.40\00:08:57.27 You'll remember, he ends writing in the sand. 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.43 And, and we can conclude that he 00:08:59.47\00:09:01.00 was writing their sins in the sand. 00:09:01.04\00:09:03.10 And I, I emphasize that word, sand, over and over again. 00:09:03.14\00:09:06.34 Because Jesus did not write their sins in stone. 00:09:06.37\00:09:08.61 He wrote them in sand. 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.18 The assumption is later the wind would blow that away, 00:09:10.21\00:09:13.28 and he exercised mercy because he was trying to reach them. 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.48 And ultimately, when Jesus was hanging on the cross, 00:09:16.52\00:09:20.26 he shows that mercy and that forgiveness by saying, 00:09:20.29\00:09:23.43 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” 00:09:23.46\00:09:25.53 >>John: Think of what Jesus did. 00:09:25.56\00:09:26.90 Judas. 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.50 Man, he suffered long with Judas. 00:09:28.53\00:09:30.90 He could have tossed him out long ago. 00:09:30.93\00:09:33.17 God could have, could have scrunched up the planet 00:09:33.20\00:09:36.81 and tossed us in the universe's wastepaper basket 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.54 right back at the beginning. 00:09:39.57\00:09:40.88 Instead, he said, “No, my love for the human family is so great 00:09:40.91\00:09:44.55 that my Son will come and die so that they might live.” 00:09:44.58\00:09:47.08 This is just a huge concept, isn't it? 00:09:47.12\00:09:49.45 >>Chris: Absolutely. 00:09:49.48\00:09:50.15 >>John: And so God says to us: 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.15 Blessed are the merciful: and they shall obtain mercy. 00:09:52.19\00:09:56.52 It's a Bible truth and it's a, frankly, 00:09:56.56\00:09:59.36 a challenge to most, if not all of us. 00:09:59.39\00:10:02.60 With Gary Kent from It Is Written Oceania 00:10:02.63\00:10:05.20 and Chris Holland from It Is Written Canada, 00:10:05.23\00:10:07.24 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:10:07.27\00:10:08.37 We'll be back with more on one of the great chapters 00:10:08.40\00:10:10.67 of the Bible in just a moment. 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.91 ¤[Music]¤ 00:10:12.94\00:10:19.08 >>John: Today, our free book offer 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.68 is for one of my very favorite books, 00:10:20.72\00:10:22.85 “Steps to Christ.” 00:10:22.88\00:10:24.89 Please call or write us, and 00:10:24.92\00:10:26.79 “Steps to Christ” 00:10:26.82\00:10:27.79 will be on its way to you. 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.49 There's no cost and no obligation. 00:10:29.52\00:10:32.16 Just call 1-800-253-3000, 00:10:32.19\00:10:35.60 and ask for the book “Steps to Christ.” 00:10:35.63\00:10:38.87 You may also request this free book by writing to 00:10:38.90\00:10:41.50 It Is Written, P O Box 6, Chattanooga, TN 37401. 00:10:41.54\00:10:47.51 And we'll mail a copy to your address in North America. 00:10:47.54\00:10:50.98 For immediate access, 00:10:51.01\00:10:52.11 you can download a free electronic version of the book 00:10:52.15\00:10:54.55 “Steps to Christ” 00:10:54.58\00:10:55.45 from our website, 00:10:55.48\00:10:57.02 ItIsWritten.com 00:10:57.05\00:10:59.49 It Is Written is a faith-based ministry 00:10:59.52\00:11:02.02 made possible by viewers like you. 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.39 If you wish to help the worldwide outreach 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.40 of It Is Written, 00:11:07.46\00:11:08.83 your tax-deductible gift may be sent to the same address. 00:11:08.86\00:11:12.33 Or you can make a gift online at 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.14 ItIsWritten.com. 00:11:14.17\00:11:16.91 ¤[Music]¤ 00:11:16.94\00:11:19.51 >>John: This is It Is Written. 00:11:19.54\00:11:20.88 I'm John Bradshaw in Gweru, Zimbabwe, 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.01 with Gary Kent of It Is Written Oceania 00:11:23.04\00:11:26.05 and Chris Holland of It Is Written Canada. 00:11:26.08\00:11:28.95 Together, we're taking on one of the great chapters of the Bible 00:11:28.98\00:11:31.89 at least a part of it. 00:11:31.92\00:11:32.82 We're looking at the Beatitudes. 00:11:32.85\00:11:34.56 And it seems to me, gentlemen, 00:11:34.59\00:11:36.12 that we are down to Matthew, chapter 5, verse 8, 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.16 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Chris? 00:11:39.19\00:11:42.06 >>Chris: You know, “blessed are the pure in heart,” 00:11:42.10\00:11:43.73 this is a very interesting thing, 00:11:43.77\00:11:45.03 because Jesus here is clearly not talking about somebody 00:11:45.07\00:11:47.94 having a clean heart with clean arteries, 00:11:47.97\00:11:50.71 but he's getting to this, this concept of the heart being the, 00:11:50.74\00:11:54.31 the inner man, the very essence of who someone is, 00:11:54.34\00:11:57.68 the very character. 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.01 And as you said earlier, 00:11:59.05\00:12:01.78 Jesus isn't saying this in a sort of works-oriented way, 00:12:01.82\00:12:05.52 but, rather, this is what someone looks like 00:12:05.55\00:12:08.92 who has received the grace and mercy of God, 00:12:08.96\00:12:11.59 and the Holy Spirit is actively transforming them 00:12:11.63\00:12:15.00 into the likeness of Christ. 00:12:15.03\00:12:16.73 >>John: Today, purity is not a virtue that too many people 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.87 hold up as being particularly important. 00:12:18.90\00:12:20.74 And we could run through the list of things in society 00:12:20.77\00:12:23.47 today to, to suggest that what we might call traditional values 00:12:23.51\00:12:28.48 basically gone out the window. 00:12:28.51\00:12:30.81 To be morally pure in this modern age, 00:12:30.85\00:12:34.88 um, how do I say this, seems to me might be a greater challenge 00:12:34.92\00:12:38.85 than years gone by. 00:12:38.89\00:12:40.09 Although if somebody wanted to be morally impure, 00:12:40.12\00:12:42.26 there's certainly many avenues for that, then. 00:12:42.29\00:12:46.23 But today, um, lax moral standards, 00:12:46.26\00:12:50.77 impurity, it's just everywhere. 00:12:50.80\00:12:52.23 What do you do to protect yourself against this, 00:12:52.27\00:12:56.30 this avalanche of impurity in the world today? 00:12:56.34\00:12:58.77 Gary, what do you, what does a person do? 00:12:58.81\00:13:00.68 >>Gary: Well, you're right, 00:13:00.71\00:13:02.04 Jesus is getting to the real heart of the matter here. 00:13:02.08\00:13:05.45 Our, our thoughts, the seats of who we are, what what drives us, 00:13:05.48\00:13:11.29 how do we build a,a wall, a fortress against this, 00:13:11.32\00:13:15.59 this flood that you've, you've been referring to? 00:13:15.62\00:13:18.13 I think it comes back to our relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:13:18.16\00:13:23.37 And, uh, that's, that's where it's centered. 00:13:23.40\00:13:25.93 And we've got to spend time with the Lord, 00:13:25.97\00:13:28.74 and we've got to build up a, a strong relationship, 00:13:28.77\00:13:33.01 which is our only defense, a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:13:33.04\00:13:36.08 We've got to be covered by Him, 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.35 we've got to be dependent upon Him. 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.08 >>John: We've got to be careful about 00:13:39.11\00:13:39.91 what we're putting into our mind. 00:13:39.95\00:13:41.58 That, that's really important. 00:13:41.62\00:13:42.98 Think about that. 00:13:43.02\00:13:44.05 And then, what do you do when temptation comes? 00:13:44.09\00:13:45.75 Because it's going to come. 00:13:45.79\00:13:46.82 And you can do nothing and get swept away by it. 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.56 You can fight it in your own strength, 00:13:49.59\00:13:51.19 and you'll get swept away by it. 00:13:51.23\00:13:53.16 Or you can call on Jesus and say, 00:13:53.19\00:13:54.73 “Here's a temptation bigger than me. 00:13:54.73\00:13:56.16 I need your help.” 00:13:56.20\00:13:57.40 And that's that moment-by-moment dying to self 00:13:57.43\00:14:00.80 that's living by faith, 00:14:00.84\00:14:02.00 living by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:14:02.04\00:14:04.27 That's a constant connection 00:14:04.31\00:14:05.41 and a turning to Jesus in times of temptation. 00:14:05.44\00:14:08.24 But surely when 00:14:08.28\00:14:09.48 he's talking about purity in heart, 00:14:09.51\00:14:10.81 he's not just talking about moral purity, 00:14:10.85\00:14:13.31 but you can go deeper. 00:14:13.35\00:14:14.38 Motives, intents, how you treat people, 00:14:14.42\00:14:18.92 what you think when somebody crosses you, right? 00:14:18.95\00:14:22.12 These sorts of things. 00:14:22.16\00:14:23.06 >>Chris: And I was going to say, you know, 00:14:23.09\00:14:24.29 it's very interesting that the promise there is, 00:14:24.33\00:14:26.49 is “blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” 00:14:26.53\00:14:29.86 The very original sin, from the devil to Eve, 00:14:29.90\00:14:34.64 is partake of this fruit which you've been instructed 00:14:34.67\00:14:37.61 not to partake of, and your eyes will be opened. 00:14:37.64\00:14:42.74 And, in fact, what that actually did is it 00:14:42.78\00:14:45.28 prevented Adam and Eve from any longer enjoying 00:14:45.31\00:14:50.59 fellowship with God face to face. 00:14:50.62\00:14:53.12 So sin actually does the very reverse 00:14:53.15\00:14:55.99 of opening our eyes to see God. 00:14:56.02\00:14:58.43 It closes our eyes from seeing God, 00:14:58.46\00:15:01.13 and so, as Gary was stating, 00:15:01.16\00:15:03.16 it is so vital to spend time in the Word. 00:15:03.20\00:15:06.17 You know, there's the verse that says, 00:15:06.20\00:15:07.50 “Resist the devil and he will flee you.” 00:15:07.54\00:15:09.94 How do we resist the devil? 00:15:09.97\00:15:11.31 By, by every word. 00:15:11.34\00:15:12.57 By studying God's word. 00:15:12.61\00:15:14.24 By filling, you know, there are some religions in the world 00:15:14.28\00:15:17.45 that talk about emptying yourself. 00:15:17.48\00:15:19.18 >>John: Mmm, that's right. 00:15:19.21\00:15:20.38 >>Chris: But the biblical reality is that we need to not 00:15:20.42\00:15:24.52 empty ourself but, rather, we need to fill ourselves so full 00:15:24.55\00:15:28.86 of the Word of God that nothing else can come in, 00:15:28.89\00:15:32.09 and that will lead to this purity in heart, 00:15:32.13\00:15:35.33 that we might commune with God. 00:15:35.36\00:15:36.77 >>John: Gary, you had a thought on this. 00:15:36.80\00:15:38.13 >>Gary: We we've been discussing the practical side of this, 00:15:38.17\00:15:41.27 the importance of resisting temptation 00:15:41.30\00:15:43.61 and finding the right way to do that, the biblical way. 00:15:43.64\00:15:46.47 And you've mentioned that well, Chris. 00:15:46.51\00:15:48.54 I believe that there's also a spiritual side to this. 00:15:48.58\00:15:51.28 As we are forgiven, we are cleansed. 00:15:51.31\00:15:54.95 We are purified through Jesus. 00:15:54.98\00:15:57.49 And it is when we are covered with his righteousness 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.99 that we will see God. 00:16:01.02\00:16:02.39 >>John: Mmm, beautiful thought. 00:16:02.42\00:16:04.06 Yeah, appreciate that. 00:16:04.09\00:16:05.19 Okay, let's look at the next, the next beatitude, 00:16:05.23\00:16:07.66 the next blessing. 00:16:07.73\00:16:08.80 Blessed are the peacemakers: 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.30 for they shall be called the children of God. 00:16:10.33\00:16:12.47 The peacemakers. 00:16:12.50\00:16:13.34 Who are the peacemakers today? 00:16:13.37\00:16:14.60 >>Gary: Well, if ever there was a time that we need peacemakers, 00:16:14.64\00:16:17.67 it's now. 00:16:17.71\00:16:18.77 And who is it that can bring peace, 00:16:18.81\00:16:21.74 not just to our personal troubled hearts, 00:16:21.78\00:16:25.48 but to our world? 00:16:25.51\00:16:27.92 It's the Prince of Peace, Jesus. 00:16:27.95\00:16:29.45 >>John: Jesus is the Prince of Peace, that's right. 00:16:29.48\00:16:31.29 Now, now, there's a, 00:16:31.32\00:16:32.59 there's a great lack of peace in the world. 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.36 Talking globally, in communities, country to country. 00:16:35.39\00:16:38.53 Just in our own lives, right? 00:16:38.56\00:16:40.16 Conflict everywhere. 00:16:40.20\00:16:41.10 And it seems, it seems, 00:16:41.13\00:16:43.23 maybe I'm just going after the low-hanging fruit here, 00:16:43.26\00:16:45.33 but it seems that, that people have a much lower threshold. 00:16:45.37\00:16:50.01 You know, we talk about road rage today. 00:16:50.04\00:16:52.01 That's really real. 00:16:52.04\00:16:53.51 People are very ugly and angry online, on the Internet. 00:16:53.54\00:16:57.95 Uh, day to day, daily lives, 00:16:57.98\00:17:00.82 man, there's just a lot of conflict. 00:17:00.85\00:17:03.02 Conflict at home. 00:17:03.05\00:17:04.15 And you talked earlier, Chris, about storing things up, 00:17:04.19\00:17:08.86 maybe for a later conversation with your spouse, 00:17:08.89\00:17:11.43 because that person crossed you. 00:17:11.46\00:17:12.79 Just better to let it go, right? 00:17:12.83\00:17:14.50 >>Chris: Yeah, and it's, and it's an amazing thing, 00:17:14.56\00:17:16.73 because we seem to be living at a time where peace is, 00:17:16.77\00:17:21.44 as you said, is this lower and lower standard. 00:17:21.47\00:17:23.17 And I actually believe we're actually seeing the fulfilment 00:17:23.20\00:17:25.97 of Matthew 24. 00:17:26.01\00:17:27.11 It's a verse we often overlook when we talk about 00:17:27.14\00:17:29.31 the signs of Jesus' coming, 00:17:29.34\00:17:31.58 but it talks about “lawlessness will abound.” 00:17:31.61\00:17:34.35 And then it says this: 00:17:34.38\00:17:35.65 and the love of many will grow cold. 00:17:35.68\00:17:38.29 >>John: Right. 00:17:38.32\00:17:39.45 >>Chris: And so what is the ultimate peace that can be 00:17:39.49\00:17:42.36 brought into someone's life? 00:17:42.39\00:17:44.26 And that is the experience of the gospel message 00:17:44.29\00:17:47.60 and true transformation into being like Jesus, 00:17:47.60\00:17:51.87 which is what the beatitudes are all about. 00:17:51.90\00:17:54.10 And so the peacemakers are those that don't just preach 00:17:54.14\00:17:58.41 the gospel but, rather, they live the gospel of Jesus 00:17:58.44\00:18:02.91 by encountering people, 00:18:02.94\00:18:04.35 and bring this level of peace espoused in the kingdom 00:18:04.38\00:18:09.85 through personal interaction. 00:18:09.88\00:18:11.32 >>Gary: As we experience peace in our own lives through Jesus, 00:18:11.35\00:18:16.42 by knowing Jesus and experiencing the peace 00:18:16.46\00:18:19.76 that comes with the removal of guilt, sin from our lives, 00:18:19.79\00:18:24.57 we're in a position then to share that peace. 00:18:24.60\00:18:27.30 And I think that's what Jesus talks about as he continues 00:18:27.34\00:18:29.87 and talks about his followers as being the salt of the earth, 00:18:29.90\00:18:33.48 the light, and so forth. 00:18:33.51\00:18:35.38 We are called upon as Christians 00:18:35.41\00:18:38.05 to bring peace to troublous situations. 00:18:38.08\00:18:41.12 And we can only do that if we've experienced 00:18:41.15\00:18:43.62 the peace of Jesus in our own lives. 00:18:43.65\00:18:45.95 >>John: And so part of that means if you're holding a grudge 00:18:45.99\00:18:47.49 against somebody, you've got to let it go. 00:18:47.52\00:18:49.62 If you want to wade into a situation, 00:18:49.66\00:18:51.33 straighten everybody out, 00:18:51.36\00:18:52.63 it's better to just suck it up and move right on. 00:18:52.66\00:18:55.76 If you want to right all of the wrongs in everybody's life 00:18:55.80\00:18:59.00 around you, eh, that's not what God has called us to. 00:18:59.03\00:19:01.90 He's called us to be like Jesus. 00:19:01.94\00:19:03.74 And the beatitudes are promises. 00:19:03.77\00:19:06.01 When Jesus comes into your life, you'll be like Him. 00:19:06.04\00:19:09.64 We'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:19:09.68\00:19:11.31 ¤[Music]¤ 00:19:11.35\00:19:18.02 Announcer: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says... 00:19:18.05\00:19:20.59 "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:19:20.62\00:19:23.73 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:19:23.76\00:19:27.46 “Every Word” is a one-minute, Bible-based daily devotional 00:19:27.50\00:19:30.87 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw, 00:19:30.90\00:19:33.00 and designed especially for busy people like you. 00:19:33.03\00:19:35.94 Look for Every Word on selected networks, 00:19:35.97\00:19:38.87 or watch it online every day on our website, 00:19:38.91\00:19:41.04 ItIsWritten.com 00:19:41.08\00:19:43.18 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:19:43.21\00:19:45.28 Watch “Every Word.” You'll be glad you did. 00:19:45.31\00:19:48.32 Here's a sample. 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.32 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:19:51.65\00:19:56.56 >>John Bradshaw: We know that God is holy, perfect, righteous. 00:19:56.59\00:20:00.36 And we know that God has big plans for us. 00:20:00.40\00:20:02.43 After all, Jesus told a woman one day to go and sin no more. 00:20:02.46\00:20:06.53 But how does a holy God relate to sinful people, 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.47 wicked people, even. 00:20:09.50\00:20:11.51 Look at Mark 16, verse 9. It says: 00:20:11.54\00:20:13.61 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, 00:20:13.64\00:20:16.51 he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, 00:20:16.54\00:20:18.48 out of whom he had cast seven devils. 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.52 To have seven devils cast out of you means you've had to have 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.75 lived a pretty fearful sort of existence. 00:20:22.78\00:20:25.15 And yet, how does Jesus relate to a woman whose life 00:20:25.19\00:20:27.99 is marinated in sin? 00:20:28.02\00:20:30.36 After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to her first of all, 00:20:30.39\00:20:34.20 which says so much about how Jesus relates to sinful people. 00:20:34.20\00:20:37.77 If you've veered off the course into the rough of life, 00:20:37.80\00:20:40.80 know that God isn't finished with you. 00:20:40.84\00:20:43.74 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:20:43.77\00:20:45.37 Let's live today by every word. 00:20:45.41\00:20:46.84 ¤[Music]¤ 00:20:46.88\00:20:55.78 >>John: Welcome back to it Is Written. 00:20:55.82\00:20:57.05 I'm John Bradshaw, with Gary Kent from It Is Written Oceania 00:20:57.09\00:21:00.12 and Chris Holland from It Is Written Canada, 00:21:00.16\00:21:02.69 and we're discussing the beatitudes. 00:21:02.72\00:21:04.46 And, gentlemen, 00:21:04.49\00:21:05.66 we're down to a very challenging passage of scripture. 00:21:05.69\00:21:08.90 Let's read through this one, three verses, 00:21:08.93\00:21:11.20 starting in Matthew, chapter 5, verse 10, says: 00:21:11.23\00:21:14.17 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' 00:21:14.20\00:21:16.84 sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:21:16.87\00:21:19.64 >>Chris: Verse 11 continues: 00:21:19.67\00:21:20.94 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, 00:21:20.98\00:21:23.98 and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 00:21:24.01\00:21:28.25 >>Gary: And verse 12 continues: 00:21:28.28\00:21:29.75 Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven, 00:21:29.78\00:21:34.06 for in the same way they persecuted the prophets 00:21:34.09\00:21:37.33 who were before you. 00:21:37.36\00:21:38.83 >>John: The Bible's a challenging book, isn't it? 00:21:38.86\00:21:41.20 And if you really want to think about this, this is a challenge. 00:21:41.23\00:21:44.33 >>Gary: Well, it deals with the nitty-gritties of life. 00:21:44.37\00:21:46.43 >>John: It really does. And look what Jesus said: 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.64 Blessed are they 00:21:48.67\00:21:49.87 which are persecuted for righteousness' sake 00:21:49.90\00:21:52.31 Now, I think we need to be careful here. 00:21:52.34\00:21:54.14 Persecuted for righteousness' sake. 00:21:54.18\00:21:56.21 A lot of people bring trouble upon themselves 00:21:56.24\00:21:58.25 because they act like fools. 00:21:58.28\00:22:00.88 And they cause trouble themselves. 00:22:00.92\00:22:02.55 That's, that's not what Jesus is talking about. 00:22:02.58\00:22:05.49 But how is that? 00:22:05.52\00:22:06.76 So you're persecuted 00:22:06.79\00:22:08.29 and you ought to be kind of happy about that. 00:22:08.32\00:22:10.93 Think about persecution in the world today. 00:22:10.96\00:22:12.53 In the western world, 00:22:12.56\00:22:13.83 not a great deal of religious persecution. 00:22:13.86\00:22:16.36 There's some, though. 00:22:16.40\00:22:17.93 But around the world, there are people really suffering 00:22:17.97\00:22:21.04 for their faith in God, aren't there? 00:22:21.07\00:22:22.44 >>Chris: You know, it's interesting, John. 00:22:22.47\00:22:24.24 When we talk about this issue of persecution, 00:22:24.27\00:22:25.61 its something that ought, also need to be careful of 00:22:25.64\00:22:28.48 is the idea that persecution is a requirement 00:22:28.51\00:22:31.75 for entry into Heaven. 00:22:31.78\00:22:33.35 We've talked about this with all of the beatitudes, 00:22:33.38\00:22:35.38 that the beatitudes are not necessarily requirements, 00:22:35.42\00:22:38.59 but, rather, what happens when a person is coming into 00:22:38.62\00:22:44.16 relationship with Jesus and being moved by the Holy Spirit. 00:22:44.19\00:22:48.20 Jesus says, to your question of the person 00:22:48.23\00:22:51.50 who is experiencing real, genuine persecution 00:22:51.53\00:22:54.84 and there are many places in the world where Christians 00:22:54.87\00:22:57.37 face persecution and death on a daily basis. 00:22:57.41\00:23:00.14 Jesus says, you can be happy. 00:23:00.18\00:23:01.54 This is not happiness that I ate a cookie and, oh, I feel good. 00:23:01.58\00:23:05.51 But, rather, this goes to the point of when we are with Jesus, 00:23:05.55\00:23:10.52 when we are following the ways of Jesus, 00:23:10.55\00:23:12.79 even when persecution comes, we can enjoy this, 00:23:12.82\00:23:17.03 this internal happiness, this internal joy 00:23:17.06\00:23:22.03 that we are in a relationship with Jesus. 00:23:22.06\00:23:25.57 And even though we're being persecuted, 00:23:25.60\00:23:28.30 God has an inheritance for us. 00:23:28.34\00:23:30.57 >>John: Yeah, there's an assurance, isn't there?
