I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.44 Thanks for joining me. He's been called the leader of 00:00:44.44\00:00:47.34 the Swiss Reformation. Which is quite a title 00:00:47.34\00:00:50.48 to bestow upon somebody, considering the Swiss 00:00:50.48\00:00:53.42 Reformation influenced the world. 00:00:53.42\00:00:56.55 He was born on New Year's Day in 1494. 00:00:56.55\00:01:00.59 Now, that's just a few weeks after the birth 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.76 of Martin Luther. And he was born 00:01:02.76\00:01:05.06 in the village of Wildhaus, a stunningly picturesque alpine 00:01:05.06\00:01:09.06 village in the northeast of Switzerland, over near 00:01:09.06\00:01:12.17 the border with Lichtenstein. Earlier this morning I came here 00:01:12.17\00:01:16.27 from Geneva, the city influenced by William Farel 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.77 and John Calvin. I've come to Zurich. 00:01:19.77\00:01:23.41 This is the city set on fire for the reformation by 00:01:23.41\00:01:27.55 Huldrych Zwingli. 00:01:27.55\00:01:30.25 The Huldrych Zwingli story had to be a remarkable story. 00:01:30.55\00:01:34.09 John Calvin influenced religious thought to the extent 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.93 that today there's a branch of theological understanding 00:01:36.93\00:01:40.30 named after him, Calvinism. 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.96 There's no Zwinglianism today. But this man 00:01:42.96\00:01:46.33 was called the third man of the Reformation, Martin Luther and 00:01:46.33\00:01:50.64 John Calvin being the other two. Now, that's heady company. 00:01:50.64\00:01:55.08 So who was Huldrych Zwingli and why is what he did 00:01:55.08\00:01:58.65 hundreds of years ago important to us today? 00:01:58.65\00:02:03.18 When Zwingli lived in Zurich, he was one of about 00:02:03.49\00:02:05.75 six or seven thousand people who lived here. 00:02:05.75\00:02:08.46 And what brought him here was really interesting. 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.56 He was a bright child, so bright that his 00:02:11.56\00:02:14.03 father sent him away from that picturesque little village to 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.83 attend a prestigious school in Bairn. 00:02:16.83\00:02:19.73 In fact, it was one of the most prestigious schools 00:02:19.73\00:02:22.47 in all of Switzerland. This boy was a capable writer, 00:02:22.47\00:02:26.51 a good speaker, and an excellent musician, 00:02:26.51\00:02:29.24 and so in that school he attracted some 00:02:29.24\00:02:32.08 unwanted attention. The monks wanted to get hold of 00:02:32.08\00:02:35.12 him and put him in a monastery. Now, when his father found out, 00:02:35.12\00:02:39.32 he was appalled. He considered the monks 00:02:39.32\00:02:42.86 to be worthless, good for nothing, and idle. 00:02:42.86\00:02:46.13 No son of his was ever going to become a monk. 00:02:46.13\00:02:49.53 So Dad sent for Huldrych, retrieved him, 00:02:49.53\00:02:52.83 and brought him home. [pensive melody] 00:02:52.83\00:02:57.61 But before long he was gone again, this time to study 00:03:02.24\00:03:05.78 in Basal. It was while he was studying in Basel that a teacher 00:03:05.78\00:03:10.82 who had read the Bible suggested to him that it was 00:03:10.82\00:03:14.69 the death of Jesus that was the sinner's only hope. 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.96 Now, this started a change in Zwingli that would 00:03:18.33\00:03:21.43 change him and result in changing the world. 00:03:21.43\00:03:26.00 From Basel he was called to minister as a priest in a 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.94 small alpine village near his childhood home. And then 00:03:28.94\00:03:32.51 from there he was called to Einsiedeln, notable then as it 00:03:32.51\00:03:37.08 is now as being the home of the Black Madonna. 00:03:37.08\00:03:41.55 In Zwingli's day, thousands of pilgrims every year 00:03:41.55\00:03:44.79 would come to Einsiedeln to venerate that image. They had 00:03:44.79\00:03:48.16 been told that by coming to the shrine they could receive a 00:03:48.16\00:03:52.19 plenary indulgence for sins. Now, this bothered Zwingli no 00:03:52.19\00:03:57.00 end when he saw how people related to the image of 00:03:57.00\00:04:00.54 the Black Madonna. Now, if you're wondering 00:04:00.54\00:04:03.37 what that is, I'll tell you. An indulgence is the 00:04:03.37\00:04:07.81 extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due in 00:04:07.81\00:04:12.11 God's justice to sin that has been forgiven, which remission 00:04:12.11\00:04:17.19 is granted by the church in the exercise of the 00:04:17.19\00:04:20.32 "power of the keys" through the application of 00:04:20.32\00:04:23.09 the superabundant merits of Christ and of the saints, and 00:04:23.09\00:04:26.93 for some just and reasonable motive. A plenary indulgence is 00:04:26.93\00:04:32.40 the remission of the entire temporal punishment due to sin, 00:04:32.40\00:04:36.94 so that no further expiation is required in Purgatory. 00:04:36.94\00:04:41.81 Now, will you find that in the Bible? 00:04:41.81\00:04:43.65 No, you won't. 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.21 But by now Zwingli had been studying the Bible. 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.85 And the more he studied the Bible, 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.52 the more he saw the clear distinction between the light of 00:04:51.52\00:04:54.62 the Bible and the errors and the heresies of his church. 00:04:54.62\00:04:59.49 He began to see the Bible as the only infallible guide, 00:04:59.49\00:05:03.53 and he wasn't afraid to say so. 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.13 He saw the people trafficking in indulgences, 00:05:06.13\00:05:09.87 and he declared that indulgences were nothing more 00:05:09.87\00:05:12.77 than superstition. He declared to the people, 00:05:12.77\00:05:16.04 "Can unprofitable works, long pilgrimages, offerings, 00:05:16.04\00:05:20.02 images, the invocation of the virgin and the saints, 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.15 secure for you the grace of God?" 00:05:23.15\00:05:26.89 Of course, there were some people who were not 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.06 happy to be told that their long journey to Einsiedeln was all 00:05:29.06\00:05:32.16 for nothing. And there were more than a few who couldn't 00:05:32.16\00:05:35.66 understand what he could possibly mean, that salvation 00:05:35.66\00:05:39.30 could come by grace, freely, as a gift from God. 00:05:39.30\00:05:45.21 For some people it was easier to listen to a priest 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.98 and trust to a pope than to receive salvation freely 00:05:47.98\00:05:52.75 from Jesus. Now, his church wasn't 00:05:52.75\00:05:56.15 very impressed with what he was doing. They had a choice: 00:05:56.15\00:05:59.59 kick him out and deal with the trouble that that would cause, 00:05:59.59\00:06:04.26 or hold him in as part of the fold and work with him 00:06:04.26\00:06:08.66 over time. They chose option B, which 00:06:08.66\00:06:12.73 gave Huldrych Zwingli more time to let the light of the Word of 00:06:12.73\00:06:17.97 God shine. Traditions can be good. 00:07:13.96\00:07:16.63 Celebrating the fourth of July for your national holiday, 00:07:16.63\00:07:19.23 for example. Brides wear white. 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.60 Your annual summer vacation at the beach. 00:07:21.60\00:07:24.37 Traditions. But in Christianity 00:07:24.37\00:07:26.47 some traditions aren't so good, when they run counter 00:07:26.47\00:07:29.48 to God's will. Here's what Paul wrote 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.78 in Colossians 2:8: "Beware lest anyone cheat 00:07:31.78\00:07:34.68 you through philosophy and empty deceit, 00:07:34.68\00:07:37.12 according to the tradition of men, according to the 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.62 basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." 00:07:39.62\00:07:43.39 Why do you do what you do? Is it because of what 00:07:43.39\00:07:46.86 the Bible says, or is it simply a tradition? 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.63 If your religious traditions contradict the Bible, 00:07:49.63\00:07:52.57 then you've got some real problems. 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.00 Let's live today by Every Word. Thanks for joining me 00:08:01.68\00:08:03.65 today in Zurich, Switzerland. It was from 00:08:03.65\00:08:06.85 here that the world was profoundly influenced by a man 00:08:06.85\00:08:10.65 that the world has largely forgotten. This man said, 00:08:10.65\00:08:15.39 "The Word of God cannot fail. It is bright. 00:08:15.39\00:08:19.49 It teaches itself, it discloses itself. 00:08:19.49\00:08:22.90 It illumines the soul with all salvation and grace, 00:08:22.90\00:08:26.77 comforts it in God, humbles it so that it loses 00:08:26.77\00:08:30.94 and even forfeits itself and embraces God." 00:08:30.94\00:08:37.15 If you're accustomed to the Bible being always 00:08:37.15\00:08:39.11 available, and if you're familiar with the thought of 00:08:39.11\00:08:40.88 salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, this might not 00:08:40.88\00:08:45.09 seem to you to be a big deal. But in Europe in those days 00:08:45.09\00:08:50.19 there was essentially only one church, and it's taught 00:08:50.19\00:08:54.73 that salvation came through the church. 00:08:54.73\00:08:58.13 ♪ [Mysterious melody] ♪ It taught that there was 00:08:58.13\00:09:00.17 benefit in pilgrimages, in giving offerings, 00:09:00.17\00:09:02.64 in bowing before images. The people who accepted 00:09:02.64\00:09:06.61 these teachings were held by them. 00:09:06.61\00:09:09.78 Huldrych Zwingli wanted people to be liberated to know God 00:09:09.78\00:09:13.31 for themselves. [hopeful piano melody] 00:09:13.31\00:09:19.45 In 1518 or 1519, Zwingli came here to Zurich, 00:09:21.16\00:09:25.09 Switzerland to work as a priest. Zurich has changed 00:09:25.09\00:09:29.50 just a little bit since Zwingli's day. 00:09:29.50\00:09:33.37 There have been people living here for 2,000 years, 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.97 and today there are 1.8 million people 00:09:35.97\00:09:38.87 in metropolitan Zurich. Zurich is the wealthiest city 00:09:38.87\00:09:43.21 in Europe. It's often described 00:09:43.21\00:09:45.21 as having the best quality of life in the world, 00:09:45.21\00:09:48.65 and much of what you've heard about Swiss banks--Zurich. 00:09:48.65\00:09:53.56 It's a beautiful city, an expensive city, 00:09:53.89\00:09:57.06 a city rich in culture and big in sport. 00:09:57.06\00:10:00.53 Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has its headquarters here. 00:10:00.53\00:10:04.00 And Zurich is a city that was one of the most 00:10:04.00\00:10:06.00 important centers of the Protestant reformation. 00:10:06.00\00:10:10.01 While what happens in Zurich today affects the 00:10:10.01\00:10:12.77 economies of the world, what happened here 500 years ago 00:10:12.77\00:10:17.38 shaked history [church bells] Now, there's no need to think 00:10:17.38\00:10:20.72 that Huldrych Zwingli was a man who didn't have any faults. 00:10:20.72\00:10:24.05 His detractors would have had no difficulty 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.72 finding some faults to point to. As a young priest, 00:10:26.72\00:10:31.79 he had relationships that didn't really mesh with the church's 00:10:31.79\00:10:36.10 expectations when it came to the conduct of priests. In fact, 00:10:36.10\00:10:39.83 he and a number of others petitioned the bishop to allow 00:10:39.83\00:10:43.51 priests to marry. Interestingly, the bishop had plenty of 00:10:43.51\00:10:47.81 incentive to refuse the request. You see, back in Zwingli's day, 00:10:47.81\00:10:52.65 if a priest wanted to keep a mistress, he could as long as he 00:10:52.65\00:10:56.99 paid a sum of money to the bishop. If that mistress were to 00:10:56.99\00:11:01.09 have a baby, no problem, as long as that same sum of money was 00:11:01.09\00:11:05.66 paid again to the bishop. When immorality 00:11:05.66\00:11:09.86 is a cottage industry, there's really very little 00:11:09.86\00:11:12.80 incentive to get rid of it. Theologically, he had his 00:11:12.80\00:11:17.84 issues too. He believed strongly in infant baptism, and he 00:11:17.84\00:11:22.58 disputed hotly with anybody who would disagree with him. 00:11:22.58\00:11:26.88 There was a debate held on the subject in Zurich 00:11:26.88\00:11:29.42 and it was decided that anybody who refused to have their 00:11:29.42\00:11:32.85 infants baptized should be kicked out of town. 00:11:32.85\00:11:36.59 Later, the town council upped the ante a little bit. 00:11:36.59\00:11:40.30 A law was passed that stated that anyone refusing to have 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.97 their infants baptized, or anybody who would baptize an 00:11:43.97\00:11:47.44 adult, should be put to death. Some Anabaptists came to town 00:11:47.44\00:11:53.61 and they disregarded that law. A man named Felix Manz baptized 00:11:53.61\00:11:58.88 adults. He was arrested, he was put on trial, and he was 00:11:58.88\00:12:04.42 sentenced to death. Sentenced to death for baptizing somebody by 00:12:04.42\00:12:10.26 immersion. Well, then they had to decide what penalty to levy 00:12:10.26\00:12:14.00 against him, or at least how to carry out the death sentence. 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.70 Back in those good ol' days, people normally were sentenced 00:12:17.70\00:12:22.64 to death by being burned at the stake. But they said for Manz, 00:12:22.64\00:12:26.31 something different; because his crime involved baptizing by 00:12:26.31\00:12:31.18 immersion, they decided that he would be bound hand and foot, 00:12:31.18\00:12:35.45 put in a boat, taken out here in Lake Zurich, and drowned. 00:12:35.45\00:12:42.49 [music] 00:12:42.49\00:12:44.89 But in general Zwingli stood very much on the Bible. 00:12:45.73\00:12:49.23 And in an era when the Bible was ignored, that's significant. 00:12:49.23\00:12:53.94 Instead of preaching the mass, Zwingli began preaching from the 00:12:53.94\00:12:57.11 Bible, taking Bible passages and proclaiming them 00:12:57.11\00:13:01.68 and applying Bible truths to the lives of the people. 00:13:01.68\00:13:05.05 He experienced a deeper conversion, and not long after 00:13:05.05\00:13:09.68 coming to the Grossmunster cathedral, it was filled to 00:13:09.68\00:13:13.15 overflowing with crowds of people who came out to hear of 00:13:13.15\00:13:17.19 the saving grace of God. And the church leadership wasn't happy. 00:13:17.19\00:13:23.80 People were regularly burned at the stake for following the 00:13:23.80\00:13:26.53 Bible rather than the church. It was about this time that Luther 00:13:26.53\00:13:31.84 appeared at the [Deardadvonce], and it was only the 00:13:31.84\00:13:35.48 providence of God that got him out of there alive. 00:13:35.48\00:13:39.01 The Bishop of Constance sent deputies to Zurich to order 00:13:39.01\00:13:42.95 Zwingli to stop preaching the Bible. They said he was teaching 00:13:42.95\00:13:46.89 people to disobey the church, and was therefore 00:13:46.89\00:13:50.03 endangering society. Zwingli was able to 00:13:50.03\00:13:53.73 point to the effect that of teaching had on the lives of 00:13:53.73\00:13:56.46 people who heard him, saying that Christianity 00:13:56.46\00:14:00.34 is the best safeguard of general security. 00:14:00.34\00:14:04.17 He was a man who wasn't easily scared. He said he feared the 00:14:04.17\00:14:08.31 representatives of the bishop as much as a cliff fears the 00:14:08.31\00:14:12.28 waves that crash at its feet. 00:14:12.28\00:14:16.05 He was a brave man, Zwingli. In 1520 the 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.65 Plague struck Zurich while he was away on vacation. But 00:14:19.65\00:14:23.53 instead of staying away, he returned to Zurich to do what he 00:14:23.53\00:14:26.83 could to help administer. One in four people 00:14:26.83\00:14:30.87 in Zurich--some say as many as one in three--died 00:14:30.87\00:14:34.04 from the plague. Zwingli got sick himself and came 00:14:34.04\00:14:37.21 close to death. But he survived. 00:14:37.21\00:14:41.04 God's hand was over this servant who still had so much 00:14:41.04\00:14:43.81 left to do. 00:14:43.81\00:14:45.61 Now, you'd think, wouldn't you, that with Luther and Zwingli 00:14:45.91\00:14:48.72 being contemporaries, with them both believing in the Bible, 00:14:48.72\00:14:52.49 both of them refugees from a broken system, both men loving 00:14:52.49\00:14:56.76 God, you'd think that because they had all this in common, 00:14:56.76\00:14:59.93 that because really they were in the crosshairs of the most 00:14:59.93\00:15:03.26 powerful church on the planet, you'd think that Zwingli and 00:15:03.26\00:15:08.40 Luther would get on like a house on fire. 00:15:08.40\00:15:11.37 Well, if you thought that, you'd be wrong. 00:15:11.37\00:15:14.54 And what was the interesting event that started 00:15:14.54\00:15:17.25 the Reformation in Switzerland, and what did it 00:15:17.25\00:15:21.15 have to do with sausages? Called here 00:16:16.27\00:16:19.34 to serve as a priest, he led the congregations at this 00:16:19.34\00:16:22.04 cathedral, the Grossmunster. People came here 00:16:22.04\00:16:25.55 and heard him lift up the Bible. And people had never 00:16:25.55\00:16:28.52 heard such things before. This was light shining 00:16:28.52\00:16:33.19 in the darkness. But what got the Reformation 00:16:33.19\00:16:36.79 started in Switzerland in the first place is interesting. 00:16:36.79\00:16:41.93 Many say it was the affair of the sausages. 00:16:42.80\00:16:46.23 The church taught at that time that meat 00:16:46.23\00:16:48.97 should not be eaten during Lent. 00:16:48.97\00:16:51.24 Now, Lent is a period of about six weeks leading up to Easter. 00:16:51.24\00:16:55.18 And there were many churches that maintained that 00:16:55.18\00:16:57.11 people should fast during Lent. Well, at that time, 00:16:57.11\00:17:01.05 Zwingli's church, also his employer, 00:17:01.05\00:17:03.55 the Roman Catholic church, was firm. 00:17:03.55\00:17:06.82 No meat during Lent. Well, during one Lenten period, 00:17:06.82\00:17:11.66 Zwingli was invited to the home of a printer in Zurich named 00:17:11.66\00:17:15.00 Froschauer for a sausage supper. There were a number of people at 00:17:15.00\00:17:19.50 Froschauer's home, Zwingli among them. 00:17:19.50\00:17:22.77 Zwingli didn't eat any of the forbidden sausages, 00:17:22.77\00:17:25.94 but Froschauer did. And when Froschauer 00:17:25.94\00:17:29.21 was arrested, arrested for eating sausages, 00:17:29.21\00:17:34.05 Zwingli defended him. Well, there you have it. 00:17:34.05\00:17:38.05 The battle was now on. And all because of a sausage. 00:17:38.05\00:17:44.79 Now, you'd think that Zwingli and Luther would 00:17:45.13\00:17:47.13 have been each other's biggest supporters, Luther in German, 00:17:47.13\00:17:50.73 Zwingli in Switzerland. Zurich and Wittenberg 00:17:50.73\00:17:54.47 or about 450 miles apart. And the two first met 00:17:54.47\00:17:58.37 in October of 1529. Both men were almost 00:17:58.37\00:18:02.31 36 years old, and they met at a council 00:18:02.31\00:18:05.98 called by a German prince who was a strong supporter 00:18:05.98\00:18:09.68 of the Reformation. Philip was hopeful that Zwingli 00:18:09.68\00:18:13.02 and Luther could iron out their theological differences. 00:18:13.02\00:18:18.16 And for the most part the two reformists found 00:18:18.16\00:18:20.96 that they were in total harmony with each other, 00:18:20.96\00:18:24.03 even though they developed in their understanding 00:18:24.03\00:18:26.10 of the Bible independent of each other. 00:18:26.10\00:18:29.24 They were taught by the best teacher of all, 00:18:29.24\00:18:31.97 the Holy Spirit. Martin Luther had funded 00:18:31.97\00:18:35.81 his opposition to indulges. So too had Zwingli. 00:18:35.81\00:18:39.38 In fact, before Luther had. [dramatic theme swells] 00:18:39.38\00:18:45.32 Both men believed in salvation by grace 00:18:46.22\00:18:48.52 through faith, and not through the church. 00:18:48.52\00:18:51.59 The Bible says that in Ephesians 2, verse 8: 00:18:51.59\00:18:54.56 "For by grace are ye saved through faith, 00:18:54.56\00:18:58.07 and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." 00:18:58.07\00:19:02.30 Both men believed faith in God didn't require sacraments 00:19:02.30\00:19:07.44 such as those offered by the church. Jesus said, 00:19:07.44\00:19:10.71 "Whoever comes to me, I will by no means cast out" 00:19:10.71\00:19:14.58 (John 6:37). Hebrews says we should 00:19:14.58\00:19:18.05 come boldly to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). 00:19:18.05\00:19:23.73 Both men believed faith in God would be revealed in a 00:19:23.73\00:19:27.13 changed life. Paul wrote to Titus 00:19:27.13\00:19:30.87 that God's grace teaches us that denying ungodliness 00:19:30.87\00:19:34.24 and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, 00:19:34.24\00:19:37.41 righteously and godly in this present world (Titus 2:12). 00:19:37.41\00:19:43.28 Both men agreed the Bible was to be the foundation of a 00:19:43.28\00:19:47.12 believer's faith. Paul wrote that all scripture is given by 00:19:47.12\00:19:52.69 inspiration of God (II Timothy 3:16). 00:19:52.69\00:19:56.99 Both men agreed that priests should be allowed to 00:19:56.99\00:19:59.43 marry. If you believe the Bible, you find no prohibition against 00:19:59.43\00:20:02.83 that of any kind. In the Old Testament, the priests were 00:20:02.83\00:20:07.04 allowed to marry. God said, "It's good that the man should 00:20:07.04\00:20:10.47 not be alone." In fact, the only place you find priests being 00:20:10.47\00:20:14.31 forbidden to marry is paganism. Both men believed confession of 00:20:14.31\00:20:19.01 sins should not be made to a priest, but should be made 00:20:19.01\00:20:22.62 directly to God. The Bible says there is one mediator between 00:20:22.62\00:20:26.79 God and man, the man Christ Jesus (I Timothy 2:5). 00:20:26.79\00:20:33.66 Both men rejected the concept of the mass as a sacrifice. 00:20:33.66\00:20:38.57 But when they came to the council at Hesse, 00:20:38.57\00:20:41.67 it was discovered that the men had one 00:20:41.67\00:20:43.87 major disagreement. In fact, this was an insurmountable 00:20:43.87\00:20:48.98 obstacle for them. They disagreed 00:20:48.98\00:20:52.05 over the communion service. Luther taught that the 00:20:52.05\00:20:55.45 bread and the wine used in the communion service were the 00:20:55.45\00:20:59.09 actual body and the actual blood of Jesus. 00:20:59.09\00:21:03.56 Zwingli took the more biblical position, that the 00:21:03.56\00:21:06.23 bread and the wine or the juice are merely representative of or 00:21:06.23\00:21:10.13 symbols of Jesus' body and Jesus' blood. 00:21:10.13\00:21:14.94 It seems there was no way the two men could find 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.57 common ground on this subject no matter how hard anybody tried. 00:21:17.57\00:21:23.14 Luther came to the place that he felt that Zwingli was a fanatic. 00:21:23.14\00:21:27.48 You see, Luther believed that whatever wasn't forbidden in 00:21:27.48\00:21:30.85 scripture was allowed. Zwingli thought Luther 00:21:30.85\00:21:34.12 wasn't taking the Reformation far enough. 00:21:34.12\00:21:36.73 Zwingli believed that whatever was not expressly 00:21:36.73\00:21:40.00 commanded in scripture shouldn't be tolerated. 00:21:40.00\00:21:44.47 Now, really, it's no surprise that 00:21:44.47\00:21:46.67 these men would have disagreements. It had only been 00:21:46.67\00:21:49.24 about this long since both men had come out of a life entirely 00:21:49.24\00:21:54.01 without the Bible. So if one or the other or both should be 00:21:54.01\00:21:57.65 wrong about something, we shouldn't be surprised 00:21:57.65\00:22:00.35 at all. Zwingli tried to be kind toward 00:22:00.35\00:22:04.09 Luther. It seems Zwingli was more kind than Luther could 00:22:04.09\00:22:08.29 manage to be. When news came to Luther 00:22:08.29\00:22:11.73 that Zwingli had died out on a battlefield, all Luther was 00:22:11.73\00:22:15.80 able to say was, "Those who take the sword 00:22:15.80\00:22:20.47 shall die by the sword." 00:22:20.47\00:22:24.07 There was no love lost there. ♪ [pastoral melody] ♪ 00:22:24.44\00:22:31.31 Well, let's consider Zwingli. He was a giant because 00:22:31.61\00:22:34.65 he brought light at a time people didn't have the light. 00:22:34.65\00:22:38.89 He insisted people could know Jesus personally, 00:22:38.89\00:22:41.86 that they could find forgiveness personally, and that the church 00:22:41.86\00:22:45.69 shouldn't control a person's conscience. Perfect? 00:22:45.69\00:22:49.86 No, he wasn't perfect. But God uses imperfect people, 00:22:49.86\00:22:54.04 like Peter, and James and John, who were so imperfect 00:22:54.04\00:22:57.71 Jesus referred to them as the Sons of Thunder. 00:22:57.71\00:23:02.71 In 1529 a Protestant missionary 00:23:02.71\00:23:05.68 was burned at the stake for preaching the gospel in a 00:23:05.68\00:23:08.65 Catholic canton. In retaliation, 00:23:08.65\00:23:11.72 Zurich boycotted that canton. But then in 1531 war broke out, 00:23:11.72\00:23:17.53 and at Kappel 8,000 Catholic soldiers warred against 1,500 00:23:17.53\00:23:22.03 Protestant soldiers. The result was never 00:23:22.03\00:23:24.73 really in question, and Huldrych Zwingli was among 00:23:24.73\00:23:27.60 those who lost their lives that day. 00:23:27.60\00:23:30.67 A life that began here in beautiful Wildhaus in the 00:23:30.67\00:23:33.68 Togganburg Valley. I don't know if the cows then wore bells 00:23:33.68\00:23:37.35 around their necks as they do now, 00:23:37.35\00:23:39.68 but if you could hear what I hear now, you'd hear the sound 00:23:39.68\00:23:42.42 of cow bells all around. It's still a beautiful, scenic, 00:23:42.42\00:23:47.72 pristine place. In Zwingli's day it had to have 00:23:47.72\00:23:51.49 been even more so.
