[music] It has stood the test of time. 00:00:00.73\00:00:11.67 God's book, the Bible. 00:00:11.67\00:00:15.08 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:16.88\00:00:21.82 It Is Written. Sharing hope 00:00:21.82\00:00:25.92 around the globe. 00:00:25.92\00:00:28.79 JB: This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw; 00:00:37.30\00:00:39.80 thanks for joining me today. 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.64 I'm joined by Dr. Neil Nedley, president of Nedley Health 00:00:41.64\00:00:44.67 Solutions. Together, we're going to discuss 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.41 something that's affecting millions of people, and it 00:00:46.41\00:00:49.61 seems like this disease is just going to explode. 00:00:49.61\00:00:54.48 There are around 26 million Americans suffering from 00:00:54.48\00:00:58.25 diabetes. Now, you can translate that into 00:00:58.25\00:01:00.69 just about any other Western nation and the incidence is 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.66 about the same per capita. There are 80 million pre- 00:01:03.66\00:01:08.40 diabetics in the United States. 00:01:08.40\00:01:11.17 This is a disease that is running rampant, and in 00:01:11.17\00:01:13.84 spite of our advancements in medical science, it seems 00:01:13.84\00:01:18.54 like this is a train that's running out of control and 00:01:18.54\00:01:22.58 we can't make it slow down. Dr. Nedley, thanks for 00:01:22.58\00:01:25.35 joining me today. NN: Oh, it's great to be here. 00:01:25.35\00:01:27.18 JB: We know about diabetes, because everybody's got it; 00:01:27.18\00:01:30.32 but, what's diabetes? NN: Diabetes is actually a 00:01:30.32\00:01:34.56 problem with glucose getting into your cell, where you 00:01:34.56\00:01:38.26 can have energy produced by the cells that, 00:01:38.26\00:01:42.33 of course, need to function. 00:01:42.33\00:01:44.40 And so there is in most cases-- the ones that you mentioned, 00:01:44.40\00:01:49.14 the pre-diabetics and most of those diabetics--it's a 00:01:49.14\00:01:52.04 problem with insulin resistance. 00:01:52.04\00:01:54.94 They have insulin but unless there's insulin going to a 00:01:54.94\00:01:59.28 receptor it doesn't allow glucose into the cell. 00:01:59.28\00:02:02.78 And that's when it accumulates out in the bloodstream, and 00:02:02.78\00:02:05.35 that's why the blood sugars go up. 00:02:05.35\00:02:06.99 JB: Okay, so you've got to get the glucose into the cell. 00:02:06.99\00:02:09.12 Now, what is glucose? NN: Glucose is a carbohydrate, 00:02:09.12\00:02:12.33 and it's one of the primary forms of energy in the body. 00:02:12.33\00:02:15.73 JB: Okay, so we've got to get energy, we've got to have 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.97 carbs. Glucose is a good one. 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.07 NN: Yes. JB: What's insulin? 00:02:20.07\00:02:22.00 NN: Insulin is something that's produced by the pancreas to 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.54 allow glucose to get into the cell. 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.81 JB: So you want glucose for energy; you need insulin to get 00:02:26.81\00:02:30.65 the glucose into the cell. If the insulin isn't being 00:02:30.65\00:02:34.55 produced by the pancreas like it should, the glucose 00:02:34.55\00:02:37.15 collects outside the cell: high blood sugar. 00:02:37.15\00:02:39.59 NN: Correct. And low energy. 00:02:39.59\00:02:42.02 JB: High blood sugar and low energy. 00:02:42.02\00:02:43.93 NN: That's right. High blood sugars and low energy 00:02:43.93\00:02:45.86 go together. JB: This equals diabetes. 00:02:45.86\00:02:48.40 NN: That's right. JB: How do you know if you've 00:02:48.40\00:02:50.20 got diabetes? NN: Well, a blood test. 00:02:50.20\00:02:52.30 If you're fasting blood sugar is greater than 125 on two 00:02:52.30\00:02:55.04 occasions, that's a definite diagnosis. 00:02:55.04\00:02:57.71 But there's a better blood test than just the fasting blood 00:02:57.71\00:03:00.51 sugar. It's called the hemoglobin A1c; 00:03:00.51\00:03:03.71 and that tells you what your average blood sugar's been 00:03:03.71\00:03:06.45 for the last three months, and that's more accurate. 00:03:06.45\00:03:08.92 JB: So how do I get that test? NN: It's just a blood test. 00:03:08.92\00:03:11.22 JB: I've got to go to a doctor? NN: Got to go to a doctor, 00:03:11.22\00:03:13.29 a laboratory, and get your blood test. 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.22 JB: Should I be asking for this? NN: I would. 00:03:15.22\00:03:18.06 If you're in America today, since 1 out of 3 people have 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.90 diabetes or pre-diabetes, and half of diabetics don't even 00:03:20.90\00:03:24.30 know that they're diabetic, it's a good test to have. 00:03:24.30\00:03:27.27 JB: Okay. You know, I'm pretty fit. 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.10 I'm certainly not overweight, probably a little underweight 00:03:29.10\00:03:30.94 right now. I'm not likely to be diabetic. 00:03:30.94\00:03:35.11 I don't have any of the warning signs. 00:03:35.11\00:03:37.05 But should I go ahead and say, hey, doc, could you check me 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.15 out? NN: It's not that expensive a 00:03:39.15\00:03:40.95 test. You could at least find out if 00:03:40.95\00:03:42.75 you have the gene for diabetes. JB: Okay. 00:03:42.75\00:03:44.95 NN: And if you're prone. JB: If I wasn't thin; if I maybe 00:03:44.95\00:03:49.09 was big and had some of the other warning signs, I really 00:03:49.09\00:03:53.26 should get tested. NN: Really. 00:03:53.26\00:03:55.16 Yeah, absolutely. JB: Is my doctor likely to say, 00:03:55.16\00:03:56.90 hey, John--if I'm in that group--hey, John or Joe 00:03:56.90\00:03:59.57 or Jack, I want to check you. 00:03:59.57\00:04:02.54 Or, should the patient take the initiative? 00:04:02.54\00:04:04.71 NN: It's good for the patient to take the initiative, and part of 00:04:04.71\00:04:07.68 the reason is that doctors can't necessarily doctor like they 00:04:07.68\00:04:11.11 used to, because there's insurance plans. 00:04:11.11\00:04:14.25 And some of the insurance plans say, do not do a hemoglobin A1c; 00:04:14.25\00:04:18.39 it's going to cost money. Unless this patient is a 00:04:18.39\00:04:21.79 diabetic. So, there's a lot of insurance 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.79 plans where you're prohibited from ordering that unless the 00:04:24.79\00:04:28.53 patient is a diabetic. But yet there's half, as I 00:04:28.53\00:04:31.40 mentioned, that are diabaetic and don't know it. 00:04:31.40\00:04:33.57 How are we going to pick it up unless we actually do it? 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.24 JB: Well, the reason we're talking is the Bible says that 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.87 Jesus came to give us life more abundantly, and we want you 00:04:38.87\00:04:41.18 to be living, I want to be living, an abundant life. 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.31 It's not just a matter of physical well-being; it's 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.88 a matter of our spiritual well-being, because our 00:04:47.88\00:04:50.09 health and our spiritual well-being are inextricably 00:04:50.09\00:04:55.12 linked together. So, blood sugar--is that 00:04:55.12\00:05:04.37 the issue? Is that really the issue? 00:05:04.37\00:05:05.93 Or are there other things involved with diabetes? 00:05:05.93\00:05:07.87 NN: Well, there are other complications that occur, 00:05:07.87\00:05:10.31 but because that glucose is not able to get into 00:05:10.31\00:05:13.01 the cell, there's a lot of complications that 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.21 occur as a result of that. 00:05:15.21\00:05:17.05 Eye complications--one of the leading causes of blindness is 00:05:17.05\00:05:20.42 actually uncontrolled diabetes. High blood pressure is one of 00:05:20.42\00:05:24.45 the complications. Heart disease. 00:05:24.45\00:05:26.55 Neuropathy. Poor circulation of the limbs-- 00:05:26.55\00:05:29.72 a lot of amputations are due to that. 00:05:29.72\00:05:31.83 And kidney failure. Half of the patients that are on 00:05:31.83\00:05:33.73 dialysis are there because their diabetes was not controlled 00:05:33.73\00:05:37.40 earlier. JB: Boy, so this is something 00:05:37.40\00:05:39.37 you really need to get a lid on. NN: Yes. 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.60 JB: Now, it's one thing we're saying, have the doctor test 00:05:41.60\00:05:46.41 you--and that's wise, that's smart to do. 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.11 Is it feasible to be talking about diabetes can be 00:05:48.11\00:05:51.51 reversed, diabetes can be avoided? 00:05:51.51\00:05:53.82 NN: Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:05:53.82\00:05:55.82 In fact, if it's caught early enough it can be completely 00:05:55.82\00:05:58.49 reversed to the point where you don't even show up as 00:05:58.49\00:06:01.29 being a diabetic on these tests. 00:06:01.29\00:06:04.56 And so it is crucial to understand this. 00:06:04.56\00:06:07.40 JB: Let me ask you this: these type 1 diabetes, these type 2 00:06:07.40\00:06:09.66 diabetes. What are they, what's the 00:06:09.66\00:06:11.37 difference? NN: Well, type 1 diabetes is due 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.84 to not producing enough insulin in our pancreas. 00:06:13.84\00:06:17.81 Actually the pancreatic, the beta cells are destroyed by 00:06:17.81\00:06:20.74 an autoimmune condition. And that normally occurs in 00:06:20.74\00:06:24.68 young people. And those people are dependent 00:06:24.68\00:06:28.62 on insulin shots, or now there's insulin that you 00:06:28.62\00:06:32.15 can get through your nose, you know. 00:06:32.15\00:06:33.86 The new nares insulin that's out there. 00:06:33.86\00:06:37.23 And so they're depending on insulin; otherwise they're 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.29 going to die in a matter of a couple of weeks, 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.36 if they don't get it. JB: Can we talk about reversing 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.40 that, is that feasible? Or is that a different ballgame? 00:06:43.40\00:06:46.50 NN: We can control it but we can't reverse it. 00:06:46.50\00:06:48.47 So you're not going to cure type 1 diabetes, but you can control 00:06:48.47\00:06:50.77 it so you don't have all of those complications that 00:06:50.77\00:06:53.54 type 1 diabetics run into. JB: Now type 2? 00:06:53.54\00:06:56.34 NN: Type 2 is an insulin receptor problem. 00:06:56.34\00:06:59.38 They're making insulin, but the receptors get gummed up. 00:06:59.38\00:07:02.62 And the receptors get gummed up due to two things combined: 00:07:02.62\00:07:07.12 Genetics loads the gun and lifestyle pulls the 00:07:07.12\00:07:09.86 trigger. And so there are lifestyle 00:07:09.86\00:07:12.09 things that are gumming up those insulin receptors if 00:07:12.09\00:07:14.66 you have that gene, and thus glucose goes up in 00:07:14.66\00:07:17.70 the blood stream, and it doesn't get into the cell 00:07:17.70\00:07:20.77 and we end up with all those complications. 00:07:20.77\00:07:22.74 JB: So if this is a lifestyle issue, that's how we can 00:07:22.74\00:07:26.24 safely say masses of people being confronted 00:07:26.24\00:07:29.51 by diabetes now can avoid that. 00:07:29.51\00:07:32.95 NN: Exactly. JB: If they make some lifestyle 00:07:32.95\00:07:35.08 changes. NN: That's right. 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.45 JB: Well, what sort of lifestyle change ought a person to make 00:07:36.45\00:07:38.85 if they're wanting to avoid, or perhaps I can say-- 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.52 and tell me if I cannot --reverse type 2 00:07:41.52\00:07:44.16 diabetes. NN: Exercise. 00:07:44.16\00:07:45.93 JB: Oh yeah? NN: Yeah, exercise works just 00:07:45.93\00:07:48.06 like insulin, and so it will drive the glucose into the 00:07:48.06\00:07:51.83 cell. So, because a diabetic needs 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.07 insulin every day, we recommend that they 00:07:54.07\00:07:57.24 exercise every day without fail. 00:07:57.24\00:08:00.04 JB: How much exercise? NN: The more the better, but a 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.14 minimum of 60 minutes a day. And of good, aerobic exercise. 00:08:02.14\00:08:06.21 It's crucially important to helping reverse this 00:08:06.21\00:08:09.25 disease. JB: And this is where I want to 00:08:09.25\00:08:10.85 challenge people, because someone will say "60 minutes 00:08:10.85\00:08:12.79 a day! Oh my goodness." Hey, do you value your health 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.59 or not? NN: Exactly. 00:08:15.59\00:08:17.33 JB: And diabetes can lead to so many real difficulties; 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.63 it's certainly worth giving it a shot. 00:08:21.63\00:08:25.10 NN: It's a tremendous investment in time. 00:08:25.10\00:08:27.24 You'll save time. That 60 minutes, if you add it 00:08:27.24\00:08:29.47 up over the course of years, you're going to add way more 00:08:29.47\00:08:32.44 than that in regard to quality of life and quantity of life. 00:08:32.44\00:08:35.61 JB: Just exercise. NN: That's right. 00:08:35.61\00:08:37.35 JB: That simple. As a percentage of the whole, 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.91 how important is, or how large a component is exercise 00:08:39.91\00:08:44.02 in dealing with diabetes? Is that half the battle, is that 00:08:44.02\00:08:47.52 part of the battle? NN: It's part of the battle. 00:08:47.52\00:08:49.36 I wouldn't say it's half, but it is almost half. 00:08:49.36\00:08:54.00 JB: Diabetes, is it possible to live without it? 00:08:54.00\00:08:57.47 Is it possible to reverse it? We're finding out that the 00:08:57.47\00:08:59.77 answer is yes, because we can live an abundant life 00:08:59.77\00:09:02.84 through Christ, as far as possible, a believer can 00:09:02.84\00:09:06.34 be assured that God's will is for them to 00:09:06.34\00:09:10.91 live without illness, without disease. 00:09:10.91\00:09:12.95 Not always, but very, very often, and when it's a 00:09:12.95\00:09:15.75 lifestyle illness, well, this is the sort of thing 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.12 that a lifestyle change can reverse and help you 00:09:18.12\00:09:21.06 to avoid. We're going to find out just how 00:09:21.06\00:09:23.19 in just a moment. 00:09:23.19\00:09:25.86 [music] 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.93 JB: We know the Bible is a book that teaches us to live 00:09:31.77\00:09:33.77 in harmony with God and in ways that demonstrate His 00:09:33.77\00:09:36.34 love to those around us. God knows what's best for us 00:09:36.34\00:09:39.64 spiritually. But does He also know what's 00:09:39.64\00:09:42.74 best for us physically? If you'd like to know what the 00:09:42.74\00:09:45.91 Bible says about how to live the longest, healthiest life 00:09:45.91\00:09:48.75 possible, let me send you our free booklet, 00:09:48.75\00:09:51.59 "Living Life to the Fullest." I'm John Bradshaw; 00:10:27.32\00:10:29.59 thanks for joining me today. 00:10:29.59\00:10:31.33 My guest is Dr. Neil Nedley, president of Nedley Health 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.36 Solutions, and we're discussing today 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.26 diabetes. Jesus came into this world to 00:10:36.26\00:10:38.87 give us an abundant life, yet we discover there are 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.67 millions and millions of Americans--about 10 percent 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.54 of the population--who are suffering from diabetes, 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.41 and 80 million who are classified as pre-diabetic. 00:10:48.41\00:10:53.08 Now, what we've learned is that diabetes can be avoided in many, 00:10:53.08\00:10:57.45 many cases. It can be successfully treated 00:10:57.45\00:11:00.72 through lifestyle adjustments; it can be even reversed. 00:11:00.72\00:11:06.73 Dr. Nedley, a moment ago we discussed exercise. 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.13 It is a very important part of reversing diabetes. 00:11:09.13\00:11:13.10 What does diet have to do with getting diabetes, and then 00:11:13.10\00:11:19.91 with reversing diabetes? NN: A lot. 00:11:19.91\00:11:22.14 Type 2 diabetes comes about really as a result of too 00:11:22.14\00:11:26.45 much energy in and not enough energy out. 00:11:26.45\00:11:29.35 So, the not enough energy out we're correcting with 00:11:29.35\00:11:31.42 exercise. But we need to actually lower 00:11:31.42\00:11:33.59 the energy that's coming in. And so that means lowering the 00:11:33.59\00:11:38.16 fat intake, lowering the sugar intake, and actually attempting 00:11:38.16\00:11:43.10 to lose weight down to your ideal weight. 00:11:43.10\00:11:45.13 JB: I remember hearing diabetes is too much sugar, but you just 00:11:45.13\00:11:50.94 said too much fat. And this, we are growing in our 00:11:50.94\00:11:55.11 understanding of this. High fat diets lead to diabetes, 00:11:55.11\00:12:00.68 don't they? NN: Correct. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.28 JB: Yeah, explain that for me. NN: Well, fat actually gums up 00:12:02.28\00:12:05.19 those insulin receptors, and so it actually causes the 00:12:05.19\00:12:10.13 problem to get worse as far as the original 00:12:10.13\00:12:12.89 cause of the type 2 diabetes. 00:12:12.89\00:12:15.26 Now, in yesteryear we used to treat diabetes--since we 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.80 thought it was just sugar-- we used to treat it with 00:12:19.80\00:12:23.04 a high protein, high fat diet, very low in carbs. 00:12:23.04\00:12:27.64 And you know, the amazing thing is we could control the blood 00:12:27.64\00:12:30.31 sugars a little better that way, because you're just not getting 00:12:30.31\00:12:33.21 any that's coming in. But the complications of the 00:12:33.21\00:12:36.65 disease skyrocketed, so you had more blindness, more 00:12:36.65\00:12:40.59 kidney failure, more neuropathy, more of 00:12:40.59\00:12:43.19 all of the problems that diabetes causes: 00:12:43.19\00:12:45.19 strokes, heart attacks - because a high protein, 00:12:45.19\00:12:48.20 high fat diet is normally high in cholesterol, high in 00:12:48.20\00:12:51.90 saturated fat. But we now know that if you're 00:12:51.90\00:12:55.80 eating natural carbs, in their natural state, and having a low 00:12:55.80\00:13:01.31 fat diet and a lower protein diet, we can control the 00:13:01.31\00:13:05.11 blood sugars just as well, because the fat isn't 00:13:05.11\00:13:08.02 gumming up the insulin receptors, and we can 00:13:08.02\00:13:11.12 lower the risk of all of those complications. 00:13:11.12\00:13:14.22 JB: So what's the ideal diet for a diabetic and some who has 00:13:14.22\00:13:18.69 diabetes and wants to reverse diabetes? 00:13:18.69\00:13:21.30 NN: The ideal diet is high in vegetables and legumes, 00:13:21.30\00:13:26.87 whole grains are part of the equation. 00:13:26.87\00:13:29.30 Nuts in moderation, and when you eat fruit--the northern fruits. 00:13:29.30\00:13:34.71 JB: What are they? NN: Those are going to be pears, 00:13:34.71\00:13:36.91 apples, as compared to the tropical fruits which are 00:13:36.91\00:13:41.15 much higher in the simple sugars. 00:13:41.15\00:13:43.95 JB: Okay, so out with the mangoes, out with 00:13:43.95\00:13:45.49 the pineapples. NN: That's right. 00:13:45.49\00:13:47.06 JB: In with the pears and apples. 00:13:47.06\00:13:48.42 NN: Exactly. JB: Now that doesn't sound so 00:13:48.42\00:13:49.72 bad. NN: Yeah. 00:13:49.72\00:13:50.83 JB: I'm thinking from the perspective of somebody 00:13:50.83\00:13:52.49 who's saying, "Oh, what do I have to give up now? 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.96 I'll tell you what you've got to give up, man, you've got to 00:13:55.96\00:13:58.57 give up diabetes. That's okay. 00:13:58.57\00:14:00.44 NN: Exactly. If you don't manage your 00:14:00.44\00:14:02.10 diabetes, it's going to manage you. 00:14:02.10\00:14:04.17 JB: Yeah, well said. So it's that a low fat, high 00:14:04.17\00:14:09.84 natural diet. NN: Yeah. 00:14:09.84\00:14:14.78 We have people that are on high doses of insulin, that are out 00:14:14.78\00:14:18.05 of control, and they leave actually on no insulin and 00:14:18.05\00:14:22.42 completely controlled in their diabetes, and 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.99 their complications reverse. 00:14:24.99\00:14:26.80 Their painful neuropathy is gone; they're able to walk 00:14:26.80\00:14:30.03 and exercise five miles a day, where they thought 00:14:30.03\00:14:33.00 it was impossible for them to do so because of pain 00:14:33.00\00:14:35.17 in their feet. Actual, real physiological 00:14:35.17\00:14:38.24 changes can occur far more powerful than medicine by 00:14:38.24\00:14:42.28 getting on the right diet and lifestyle, and it's 00:14:42.28\00:14:44.41 not that hard to do if you're educated. 00:14:44.41\00:14:46.08 JB: I've told you the story once before; I'll tell you again. 00:14:46.08\00:14:47.98 A friend of mine was a great big guy, way overweight, doing 00:14:47.98\00:14:53.62 everything wrong, eating junk and so forth. 00:14:53.62\00:14:56.39 The doctor said, the diabetes is at the place where we're going 00:14:56.39\00:15:01.10 to have to put you on insulin. I think that's how it was. 00:15:01.10\00:15:03.30 It was time for insulin, anyway. And he said, you know, I don't 00:15:03.30\00:15:06.47 really want to do that. Well, you're going to have to do 00:15:06.47\00:15:09.87 it. My friend said, will you give me 00:15:09.87\00:15:11.81 a month? Give me a month, and I'm going 00:15:11.81\00:15:15.14 to see if there are some things I can do naturally. 00:15:15.14\00:15:17.48 And this is a guy that hadn't done anything naturally. 00:15:17.48\00:15:19.45 It was natural for him to just get bigger. 00:15:19.45\00:15:22.22 You know. And the doctor said, it's your 00:15:22.22\00:15:25.39 health, if that's what you want to do. 00:15:25.39\00:15:27.49 He said, well, I'll check back with you in 30 days. 00:15:27.49\00:15:29.66 He started to make the very changes you're talking 00:15:29.66\00:15:31.63 about. The very changes. 00:15:31.63\00:15:33.80 And at the end of 30 days he went to see his doctor, and 00:15:33.80\00:15:36.83 the doctor said, whatever you're doing, keep doing it. 00:15:36.83\00:15:40.84 And now, this guy is at his ideal weight. 00:15:40.84\00:15:44.84 He exercises and loves to. He says he's eating healthy food 00:15:44.84\00:15:49.81 and he loves how it tastes. The guy was like, sparkling. 00:15:49.81\00:15:53.11 He said, I just can't tell you how good food tastes now. 00:15:53.11\00:15:56.58 No insulin, no drugs, no nothing. 00:15:56.58\00:15:59.79 And he turned it around naturally. 00:15:59.79\00:16:01.59 So, that's why I said to you, is this quackery? 00:16:01.59\00:16:04.09 I know the answer: It isn't. But. 00:16:04.09\00:16:07.30 But, why didn't his doctor say to him, hey friend, this is 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.53 what you've got to do? NN: Doctors sometimes have a 00:16:11.53\00:16:13.90 paternalistic attitude that says this is going to be 00:16:13.90\00:16:17.91 too hard for the patient, so why even tell him 00:16:17.91\00:16:20.38 about it. And one of the reasons why they 00:16:20.38\00:16:23.31 have a tendency to think that is because they're not on an 00:16:23.31\00:16:25.61 ideal lifestyle themselves, and they don't really want 00:16:25.61\00:16:28.85 to do it themselves so they assume nobody 00:16:28.85\00:16:30.95 else does either. But I find it's much better to 00:16:30.95\00:16:34.19 tell the patient what is the most ideal, and then have 00:16:34.19\00:16:37.26 them make the choice. And so, there's a lot more 00:16:37.26\00:16:40.43 people willing to follow a program like that than 00:16:40.43\00:16:43.03 many doctors believe. JB: I have physician friends 00:16:43.03\00:16:45.47 who've told me about patients who say, you know, Doc, I've 00:16:45.47\00:16:48.50 got this going on, and the doctor says, well, if you 00:16:48.50\00:16:52.47 drink more water and walk a mile a day, everything 00:16:52.47\00:16:55.34 will be okay. And the patient then says, 00:16:55.34\00:16:57.68 Doctor, are you going to write me a prescription, 00:16:57.68\00:17:01.65 or am I going have to go and find me a doctor 00:17:01.65\00:17:03.92 who will? So there's that to contend with 00:17:03.92\00:17:06.55 as well, isn't there, in some minds? 00:17:06.55\00:17:08.62 NN: That's right. Yeah, exactly. 00:17:08.62\00:17:10.16 People anticipate when they go to a doctor, they're going to 00:17:10.16\00:17:12.63 get a pill, and if they don't somehow they feel they've 00:17:12.63\00:17:15.63 been cheated. JB: People are funny old things. 00:17:15.63\00:17:19.10 Sometimes they don't want to help themselves even when 00:17:19.10\00:17:20.97 the results are just so dramatically good. 00:17:20.97\00:17:23.41 And I think this is why we want to approach this and everything 00:17:23.41\00:17:28.01 else through the lens of the Bible. 00:17:28.01\00:17:30.28 Arm in arm or heart in heart with God. 00:17:30.28\00:17:33.52 Because ultimately what we want to do is God's will. 00:17:33.52\00:17:36.79 NN: Yes. JB: And going God's direction, 00:17:36.79\00:17:39.55 doing things God's way. There's much more to talk about. 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.62 Don't go anywhere, we'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:17:41.62\00:17:46.19 "Every Word" is a one-minute, Bible-based daily devotional 00:17:46.86\00:17:50.60 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw, and designed 00:17:50.60\00:17:53.03 especially for busy people like you. 00:17:53.03\00:17:55.57 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks or watch 00:17:55.57\00:17:58.77 it online every day on our website, 00:17:58.77\00:18:00.78 ItIsWritten.com. 00:18:00.78\00:18:03.35 [music] 00:18:04.01\00:18:09.02 JB: Thanks for joining me. An article I read suggested 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.55 that if you eat out less and eat with your family more, 00:18:12.55\00:18:16.12 you're likely to see these five benefits: 00:18:16.12\00:18:18.46 You'll lose weight; your children will be healthier; 00:18:18.46\00:18:20.93 you'll save money; your family's bond will 00:18:20.93\00:18:22.76 be stronger; and your kids will have a 00:18:22.76\00:18:24.50 healthier future. I'm not sure if these are 00:18:24.50\00:18:26.74 guarantees, but they're sure good sense. 00:18:26.74\00:18:28.77 God wants us to consider our health for spiritual reasons. 00:18:28.77\00:18:32.24 He said, "You were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in 00:18:32.24\00:18:36.01 your body and in your spirit, which are God's." 00:18:36.01\00:18:38.58 1 Corinthians 6:20. Whatever you can do to give 00:18:38.58\00:18:41.48 yourself a physical edge is a good thing. 00:18:41.48\00:18:43.85 While nobody's suggesting that a person would never eat out, 00:18:43.85\00:18:46.49 it's been proven that eating together more as a family 00:18:46.49\00:18:49.29 is good not only for your health, but good for your 00:18:49.29\00:18:51.86 well-being. And that's something that's good 00:18:51.86\00:18:54.40 for all of us. I'm John Bradshaw for 00:18:54.40\00:18:56.77 It Is Written. Let's live today by every word. 00:18:56.77\00:19:00.14 JB: Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written. 00:19:04.84\00:19:07.48 Dr. Nedley, when it comes to diabetes let me ask you about 00:19:07.48\00:19:10.41 sugar, because there's this thought that says if you're not 00:19:10.41\00:19:13.82 a diabetic, well hey, it's okay to eat all you want. 00:19:13.82\00:19:16.48 That cannot be the right thought, but please, 00:19:16.48\00:19:21.12 you explain. NN: Well, sugar even in a 00:19:21.12\00:19:23.39 nondiabetic will increase free radicals. 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.90 In fact, there are studies showing 14 times the free 00:19:26.90\00:19:30.10 radical production after drinking two sodas as 00:19:30.10\00:19:34.04 compared to drinking two glasses of 00:19:34.04\00:19:35.80 water. JB: What's a free radical? 00:19:35.80\00:19:37.54 NN: A free radical is something that's going to cause damage to 00:19:37.54\00:19:39.84 your system; it's going to cause blood vessel damage and it can 00:19:39.84\00:19:42.84 get into the cells actually. It's one of the reasons why 00:19:42.84\00:19:45.35 sugar has been associated with several cancers. 00:19:45.35\00:19:47.82 And so yes, you might not get diabetes from it, if you 00:19:47.82\00:19:51.95 don't have the gene, but you can get something 00:19:51.95\00:19:55.62 else bad from it as well. 00:19:55.62\00:19:57.43 And of course it's one of the main causes of premenstrual 00:19:57.43\00:20:00.60 dysphoric disorder in college students. 00:20:00.60\00:20:03.97 It's a cause of dental carries. You know, and these are in 00:20:03.97\00:20:09.04 nondiabetics. The American Heart Association 00:20:09.04\00:20:13.17 recently stated that if you are getting more than 150 calories 00:20:13.17\00:20:18.88 a day in sugar and you're a female, you are dramatically 00:20:18.88\00:20:23.42 increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke 00:20:23.42\00:20:26.45 because of the blood vessel changes. 00:20:26.45\00:20:28.22 Over 200 calories a day in sugar--and that's not much-- 00:20:28.22\00:20:31.76 and so the headlines came out after that, because one 00:20:31.76\00:20:35.63 soda has more than that. One soda a day can kill. 00:20:35.63\00:20:38.83 And you know, heart disease and vascular disease is still the 00:20:38.83\00:20:42.24 number one cause of death in this country, and we've focused 00:20:42.24\00:20:45.01 in on cholesterol and those things, and yeah, they're 00:20:45.01\00:20:47.44 important, but we've ignored the sugar part of this 00:20:47.44\00:20:49.94 disease. JB: Right, sugar does some real 00:20:49.94\00:20:51.98 harm, doesn't it? NN: That's right. 00:20:51.98\00:20:53.82 Refined sugar. JB: I think too, sugar's 00:20:53.82\00:20:56.08 everywhere. NN: It is, yeah. 00:20:56.08\00:20:57.85 JB: There are some breads loaded with sugar, ketchup, loaded with 00:20:57.85\00:21:02.49 sugar. It's not just candy. 00:21:02.49\00:21:04.73 NN: That's right. JB: There are some breakfast 00:21:04.73\00:21:06.53 cereals that could practically be classified as candy because 00:21:06.53\00:21:10.17 of the sugar content. NN: That's right. 00:21:10.17\00:21:12.40 JB: And we tend to think if it's in the cereal aisle, it's good 00:21:12.40\00:21:14.47 for our kids. And maybe it's anything but. 00:21:14.47\00:21:17.44 NN: Average American is eating 140 pounds of it per year. 00:21:17.44\00:21:22.08 140 pounds. JB: What should that number be? 00:21:22.08\00:21:24.75 Much less. NN: Much less. 00:21:24.75\00:21:27.28 Less than 10. I eat less than 10, and that 00:21:27.28\00:21:29.72 means someone else is eating about 300 to average me out. 00:21:29.72\00:21:32.75 JB: Whew! I eat less than 10 as well, so 00:21:32.75\00:21:35.29 there's somebody getting their share and my share, too. 00:21:35.29\00:21:38.03 You see patients about this, you consult with patients who are 00:21:38.03\00:21:43.43 diabetic and they're wrestling with this. 00:21:43.43\00:21:45.63 So, do they listen to you? And those who do, what do they 00:21:45.63\00:21:50.47 experience? NN: They do actually listen to 00:21:50.47\00:21:52.84 me, in most cases. I'm not going to say everybody 00:21:52.84\00:21:56.64 follows 100 percent of what I recommend. 00:21:56.64\00:21:59.68 But what I have found is, if we show them the benefit 00:21:59.68\00:22:03.65 and we also show them what will happen if they don't go 00:22:03.65\00:22:07.89 on this approach, and we leave the choice to them, 00:22:07.89\00:22:10.53 they're very willing to be educated and to go 00:22:10.53\00:22:13.33 through this. So they'll come to nutrition 00:22:13.33\00:22:15.16 seminars we hold, they'll go to reversing diabetes seminars 00:22:15.16\00:22:18.20 at Weimar. They'll even go through the 00:22:18.20\00:22:19.90 Weimar New Start Program. They'll achieve optimal health. 00:22:19.90\00:22:23.37 But one of the key components of this, that a lot of people are 00:22:23.37\00:22:27.18 not aware of, is the fact that self-control is possible. 00:22:27.18\00:22:34.45 A lot of people say well, that might be true if I were able to 00:22:34.45\00:22:39.35 change my lifestyle, but I don't think I can. 00:22:39.35\00:22:42.86 JB: Well, what's the secret to self-control? 00:22:42.86\00:22:45.29 NN: The secret to self-control is actually self-sacrifice. 00:22:45.29\00:22:51.07 It's a self-sacrificing love. And you know on the front end 00:22:51.07\00:22:55.40 it looks like a tremendous sacrifice. 00:22:55.40\00:22:57.24 You mean I'm going to have to give up my Reese's Peanut 00:22:57.24\00:22:59.34 Butter Cups? And I'm going to have to give up 00:22:59.34\00:23:01.71 my four Dr. Peppers? I don't think can do that. 00:23:01.71\00:23:05.35 But actually if we take hold--this is where the 00:23:05.35\00:23:09.32 spiritual part comes in--self-sacrificing 00:23:09.32\00:23:12.35 love does not come from within. 00:23:12.35\00:23:14.79 It comes from outside of us. It's called the love of God. 00:23:14.79\00:23:18.79 And the love of God changes people, and it can change 00:23:18.79\00:23:22.30 the world. And if we open ourselves up 00:23:22.30\00:23:25.07 to learning more about that love and embracing the love of God 00:23:25.07\00:23:28.84 in our lives, we can have comprehensive self-control. 00:23:28.84\00:23:33.51 And we think it's self-sacrifice on the front end, but it 00:23:33.51\00:23:36.88 actually is far more life enhancing. 00:23:36.88\00:23:39.48 We're going to have a far more pleasurable existence by 00:23:39.48\00:23:42.65 following the Lord's will for us in a diabetes- 00:23:42.65\00:23:45.02 control program than not controlling it. 00:23:45.02\00:23:47.59 JB: I'd like to challenge people to give it a try. 00:23:47.59\00:23:50.69 NN: Yeah. JB: 'Cause you know something 00:23:50.69\00:23:52.39 about Christianity. Faith in God. 00:23:52.39\00:23:54.60 It isn't about how strong you can be; it isn't about how much 00:23:54.60\00:23:58.73 self-control you can muster up. It's really about your 00:23:58.73\00:24:02.80 willingness to take God at His word and believe the promises 00:24:02.80\00:24:05.84 God makes to you. Many people want to promise God, 00:24:05.84\00:24:08.31 I'll do this and I'll do that. I'll just forget it. 00:24:08.31\00:24:10.95 Instead, believe God's promises to you. 00:24:10.95\00:24:14.32 And when the Bible says My God shall supply all your need, 00:24:14.32\00:24:17.55 and you need self-control, you go to God and say, 00:24:17.55\00:24:20.39 here's the promise. Philippians 4:19. 00:24:20.39\00:24:23.22 It's time for You to keep Your promise, because this is what 00:24:23.22\00:24:25.79 I need and I can't do it myself. 00:24:25.79\00:24:27.66 NN: God will help you. JB: That's right. 00:24:27.66\00:24:29.10 Not I, but Christ lives in me, Paul wrote to the Galatians in 00:24:29.10\00:24:33.17 chapter 2, and verse 20 of that book. 00:24:33.17\00:24:35.17 It's about coming to God and saying I've tried it my way. 00:24:35.17\00:24:37.84 That's a dead-end street. Time for me to try it Your way. 00:24:37.84\00:24:40.94 Come and do in me what YOU want to do. 00:24:40.94\00:24:44.05 That's a surrendered life. Jesus didn't even want to die on 00:24:44.05\00:24:46.98 the cross. Three times he cried out, if 00:24:46.98\00:24:49.88 it's possible please no. But He would follow that by 00:24:49.88\00:24:53.52 saying, Nevertheless not my will but Your will be done. 00:24:53.52\00:24:58.23 And that's a big key right there. 00:24:58.23\00:25:00.56 NN: Absolutely. JB: I want to challenge you to 00:25:00.56\00:25:02.50 take God at His word. If you don't have the self- 00:25:02.50\00:25:04.63 control, no sweat. God's got plenty to give you. 00:25:04.63\00:25:07.44 If you don't even have the will. Oh look, I'm out of control, 00:25:07.44\00:25:11.94 I'm spiraling out of control, there's no 00:25:11.94\00:25:14.31 way I can do this right. 00:25:14.31\00:25:15.84 Ask God to give you the will. Right now I don't want to, 00:25:15.84\00:25:19.25 God, but I would like You to make me willing. 00:25:19.25\00:25:21.68 And that's faith in God. It's about turning your life 00:25:21.68\00:25:24.62 over to Christ and allowing the Spirit of God to dwell 00:25:24.62\00:25:28.52 in you richly and do the sorts of things that you 00:25:28.52\00:25:31.09 are not able to do. 00:25:31.09\00:25:32.53 JB: If you'd like to know what the Bible says about how to 00:25:40.47\00:25:41.97 live the longest, healthiest life possible, let me send 00:25:41.97\00:25:45.41 you our free booklet, "Living Life to the Fullest." 00:25:45.41\00:25:48.74 All you need to do is call (800) 253-3000 and ask 00:25:48.74\00:25:54.02 for your copy of "Living Life to the Fullest." 00:25:54.02\00:25:56.95 If the line is busy please do try again. 00:25:56.95\00:25:59.12 You can write to us at It Is Written, P.O. JB: This has been a blessing. 00:26:39.16\00:26:41.53 Lives have been helped. As far as we want, our lives 00:26:41.53\00:26:46.43 have been helped, because you know the key is not 00:26:46.43\00:26:48.64 to go and religiously do all the new things I've 00:26:48.64\00:26:51.41 learned, but it's to go to God and say God, 00:26:51.41\00:26:53.71 You do in me what You can do. 00:26:53.71\00:26:56.21 And when we learn to do that, the sky's the limit. 00:26:56.21\00:26:58.61 NN: Yes. Absolutely. 00:26:58.61\00:27:00.25 JB: Thanks again. NN: You're welcome. 00:27:00.25\00:27:02.28 JB: Let's pray together. Our Father in heaven, we are 00:27:02.28\00:27:04.45 grateful that there is a God who would live His life 00:27:04.45\00:27:06.79 in us. There is a God so merciful to 00:27:06.79\00:27:09.62 sinners that He would forgive us and cleanse us. 00:27:09.62\00:27:11.96 There is a God so powerful that He can help us even when our 00:27:11.96\00:27:16.87 lifestyle choices have led us in unfortunate directions. 00:27:16.87\00:27:21.20 You can lead us back in the right direction. 00:27:21.20\00:27:24.41 And we're thankful for that today. 00:27:24.41\00:27:26.98 And so keep and bless us, let Your will be done. 00:27:26.98\00:27:31.35 In Jesus' name, amen. NN: Amen. 00:27:31.35\00:27:36.48 [music] 00:27:37.22\00:27:44.36 JB: I thank you for joining me today, and I look forward to 00:27:50.07\00:27:52.00 seeing you again next time. Until then remember, 00:27:52.00\00:27:55.60 it is written: Man shall not live 00:27:55.60\00:27:58.07 by bread alone but by every word that 00:27:58.07\00:28:01.98 proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:28:01.98\00:28:05.25
