[dramatic music] It has stood the test of time. 00:00:00.93\00:00:11.21 God's book, the Bible. Still relevant in today's 00:00:11.21\00:00:18.58 complex world. It Is Written, sharing hope 00:00:18.58\00:00:25.25 around the globe. 00:00:25.25\00:00:30.83 JB: This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw; 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.34 thanks for joining me today. 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.17 God managed to make a masterpiece when, in the 00:00:42.17\00:00:45.97 Garden of Eden, He got down close to the ground 00:00:45.97\00:00:48.98 took some soil, formed it into the shape of a man 00:00:48.98\00:00:52.98 and then did something very intimate, when He 00:00:52.98\00:00:55.45 breathed into the nostrils of that as-yet-inanimate 00:00:55.45\00:00:59.42 man, the breath of life. Adam came to life and God had 00:00:59.42\00:01:04.29 produced this beautiful, incredible thing called 00:01:04.29\00:01:07.36 the human being. And within the head of every 00:01:07.36\00:01:12.37 last one of us there's an organ that's vital to our 00:01:12.37\00:01:15.24 lives and our spiritual lives. 00:01:15.24\00:01:18.64 God gave every one of us a nerve center. 00:01:18.64\00:01:21.14 We call it the brain. Here to discuss the brain 00:01:21.14\00:01:23.85 with me and the role and the way you can experience 00:01:23.85\00:01:27.25 better brain health is Dr. Neil Nedley, who's the 00:01:27.25\00:01:31.15 president of Nedley Health Solutions. 00:01:31.15\00:01:32.92 Dr. Nedley, thanks for joining me today. 00:01:32.92\00:01:34.62 NN: Thank you. Good to be here. 00:01:34.62\00:01:36.12 JB: As we talk about the brain there are certain things that 00:01:36.12\00:01:37.93 many people are surprised to learn can be done to improve 00:01:37.93\00:01:42.76 the function of a person's brain. 00:01:42.76\00:01:45.10 One of them is nutrition.. NN: That's right. 00:01:45.10\00:01:47.27 JB: How significant is nutrition when it comes to brain function? 00:01:47.27\00:01:51.24 And the reason I ask this is not nearly because I'd like my brain 00:01:51.24\00:01:54.51 to fire on all cylinders, but as it does I can have a better 00:01:54.51\00:01:57.85 relationship with God. NN: Absolutely. 00:01:57.85\00:01:59.75 JB: How significant is nutrition to that whole process? 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.08 NN: It's very significant. I mean, we talk about 10 major 00:02:02.08\00:02:05.32 factors that affect the brain. Nutrition is one of those 10 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.49 and it's certainly probably, in rank order - number two 00:02:09.49\00:02:13.40 or three out of those 10 as far as level of importance 00:02:13.40\00:02:15.96 is concerned. JB: When we're talking about 00:02:15.96\00:02:17.77 nutrition, what you eat. So what you eat affects brain 00:02:17.77\00:02:21.87 function. NN: Absolutely. 00:02:21.87\00:02:23.54 JB: Why is that? I know why it affects 00:02:23.54\00:02:26.54 heart function. You eat a bunch of fat, it ends 00:02:26.54\00:02:28.51 up clogging up the inside of your arteries and ultimately 00:02:28.51\00:02:31.15 there's a heart attack. What happens with brain 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.52 function? NN: Well, we also have a 00:02:33.52\00:02:35.22 circulation to the brain itself. 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.15 So a lot of the things that adversely affect the heart 00:02:37.15\00:02:39.62 also adversely affect the brain. 00:02:39.62\00:02:41.96 But in addition to that, what we eat does get turned into 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.09 neurotransmitters. It gets turned into neurons. 00:02:45.09\00:02:49.30 It gets turned into the cells that actually supply the 00:02:49.30\00:02:53.34 structural support of the brain. 00:02:53.34\00:02:55.84 And it's crucially important for clear thought processes to 00:02:55.84\00:03:01.51 be on a good diet. JB: I've met a lot of people who 00:03:01.51\00:03:03.75 just don't know that what you eat gets turned into various 00:03:03.75\00:03:10.22 things. Can you describe that process? 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.12 How does that happen? I mean, this really is "you are 00:03:13.12\00:03:16.86 what you eat." NN: Yes. 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.69 JB: So, how does, I sit down and I eat a tomato sandwich, and my 00:03:18.69\00:03:24.87 tomato sandwich gets turned into neurotransmitters and neurons. 00:03:24.87\00:03:28.14 How? NN: How does that happen? 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.61 Well, tomatoes are a good source of what we call tyrosine. 00:03:30.61\00:03:33.88 Tyrosine in a tomato, because tomatoes have carbs in them 00:03:33.88\00:03:37.95 as well, will actually get into the brain. 00:03:37.95\00:03:41.48 And then once tyrosine gets into the brain we can make dopamine 00:03:41.48\00:03:44.55 out of it and norepinephrine out of it. 00:03:44.55\00:03:47.72 And those are important for focus, for memory, and for 00:03:47.72\00:03:52.36 pleasure, and to be able to even have a love of 00:03:52.36\00:03:55.60 learning, we need to have those chemicals. 00:03:55.60\00:03:58.20 JB: What's a neurotransmitter? NN: That's the form of 00:03:58.20\00:04:00.64 communication between one neuron and 00:04:00.64\00:04:03.04 another. JB: What's a neuron? 00:04:03.04\00:04:04.57 NN: A neuron is what sends an electrical signal in our brain. 00:04:04.57\00:04:08.04 Our brain is really an electrical center of the 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.01 whole entire body, and in order for the brain to 00:04:11.01\00:04:15.38 communicate with itself, from one 00:04:15.38\00:04:17.52 area to another, we need to have 00:04:17.52\00:04:19.42 neurotransmitters. And that's a vital role. 00:04:19.42\00:04:22.89 There are actually 100 trillion connections in our brain, and 00:04:22.89\00:04:28.63 those connections would be meaningless unless there 00:04:28.63\00:04:31.83 were neurotransmitters to help with that 00:04:31.83\00:04:34.14 communication. JB: Omega 3s. 00:04:34.14\00:04:36.27 What are these things, where can I get them, and how do they help 00:04:36.27\00:04:40.18 me when I get them? NN: Omega 3s are essential fats. 00:04:40.18\00:04:43.81 Human beings and actually most of the animals as well, 00:04:43.81\00:04:48.15 including fish, have no ability to make omega 3s 00:04:48.15\00:04:52.35 from anything else in our body. 00:04:52.35\00:04:54.76 We have to get it in our diet. JB: Good cholesterol is 00:04:54.76\00:04:58.03 manufactured by our liver, correct? 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.43 NN: Uh-huh. JB: Okay, but this omega 3 that 00:05:00.43\00:05:02.73 we have to have isn't manufactured by it? 00:05:02.73\00:05:04.63 NN: It's not manufactured. JB: We've got to eat or drink 00:05:04.63\00:05:07.20 it. NN: We've got to eat or drink 00:05:07.20\00:05:08.80 it, correct. JB: Okay, so where do I get 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.54 some? NN: Where most people get their 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.34 omega 3 from is from fish. The reason why is the plants of 00:05:12.34\00:05:16.31 the waters tend to have quite a bit of omega 3. 00:05:16.31\00:05:19.81 Fish don't make it themselves, particularly the cold water, 00:05:19.81\00:05:22.88 ocean plants are quite high in omega 3. 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.62 The fish get it from there and then we can get it from the 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.26 fish. JB: Wouldn't we be better served 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.19 just getting it from the plants? NN: Absolutely. 00:05:31.19\00:05:33.33 JB: Oh, you agree with that? NN: Yes. 00:05:33.33\00:05:35.03 Absolutely. You know, 100 years ago I think 00:05:35.03\00:05:36.90 fish was a great way to get your omega 3 because the 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.13 waters were kind of pure and nontoxic, but our 00:05:39.13\00:05:43.37 waters have become quite toxic, and there 00:05:43.37\00:05:47.31 are heavy metals in them and all sorts of things, 00:05:47.31\00:05:49.71 and mercy is now in every fish anywhere. 00:05:49.71\00:05:53.65 And mercury actually inhibits our brain function. 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.32 It's going to cause irritability and it can cause depression, it 00:05:57.32\00:06:01.52 can cause the mood to go down, and it can also actually lower 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.86 your IQ permanently. So we want to stay away from 00:06:04.86\00:06:08.10 mercury, and that's why we really need to change the 00:06:08.10\00:06:12.43 way we're getting our omega 3 these days. 00:06:12.43\00:06:14.77 Whatever is in a toxic parts-per-million, 00:06:14.77\00:06:18.24 for instance, in the ocean or in the river is 00:06:18.24\00:06:22.08 going to be a concentrated a thousand to a million fold 00:06:22.08\00:06:26.08 in the fat of fish. So even though it's a small 00:06:26.08\00:06:28.82 amount in the ocean, ramp it up by a million and 00:06:28.82\00:06:32.52 that's how much you're getting from the fat 00:06:32.52\00:06:34.62 of fish that you're consuming. 00:06:34.62\00:06:36.06 JB: That's a significant amount. NN: It's the most toxic food 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.13 supply in America today, is fish. 00:06:38.13\00:06:40.83 JB: Well, where then, where would I get it if I'm not 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.86 going into the fish itself. NN: Well, there are plant 00:06:42.86\00:06:46.13 sources of omega 3; fortunately land plants as well as sea 00:06:46.13\00:06:50.27 plants. JB: So there's something I can 00:06:50.27\00:06:51.91 buy at the supermarket? NN: Yeah, spinach, for instance, 00:06:51.91\00:06:55.34 is very high in omega 3 fat. Whole wheat, wheat germ is a 00:06:55.34\00:07:03.08 good source of omega 3. Edamame, which is green soy 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.59 beans, they are very high in omega 3. 00:07:06.59\00:07:09.96 JB: I understand walnuts? NN: Walnuts are a good source, 00:07:09.96\00:07:12.43 and there are two sources that are higher. 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.73 In fact, these sources are higher than any fish on 00:07:14.73\00:07:16.87 the planet, and that's chia seeds and 00:07:16.87\00:07:19.87 flax seed. Extremely high sources of 00:07:19.87\00:07:23.24 omega 3. JB: There are some fats that 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.57 aren't helpful. In a moment we'll discuss this. 00:07:25.57\00:07:28.31 This is interesting. It's more than interesting--it's 00:07:28.31\00:07:32.28 vital, because what becomes apparent and obvious is that 00:07:32.28\00:07:36.99 you can eat your way to good brain health. 00:07:36.99\00:07:41.82 Clearly, then, you can eat your way to poor brain health. 00:07:41.82\00:07:44.93 And if we're going to have a relationship with God that 00:07:44.93\00:07:46.86 stands the test of time, we want good brain health. 00:07:46.86\00:07:49.83 We'll be back with more in just a moment. 00:07:49.83\00:07:52.93 [soft piano music] JB: We know the Bible is a 00:07:53.30\00:07:58.67 book that teaches us to live in harmony with 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.64 God and in ways that demonstrate His love 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.64 to those around us. God knows what's best for us 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.75 spiritually. But does He also know what's 00:08:05.75\00:08:08.82 best for us physically? If you'd like to know what the 00:08:08.82\00:08:12.12 Bible says about how to live the longest, healthiest life 00:08:12.12\00:08:14.82 possible, let me send you our free booklet: 00:08:14.82\00:08:17.73 "Living Life to the Fullest." I'm John Bradshaw, joined today 00:08:51.49\00:08:54.60 by Dr. Neil Nedley, the president of Nedley 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.60 Health Solutions. God made us, the Bible says, 00:08:57.60\00:09:01.30 fearfully and wonderfully. And in all of us He placed a 00:09:01.30\00:09:05.24 brain. And clearly, we want that brain 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.84 to be functioning as well as possible if we want to have 00:09:08.84\00:09:12.55 a great relationship with God. 00:09:12.55\00:09:15.52 Dr. Nedley, a moment ago we were talking about a good fat, an 00:09:15.52\00:09:18.99 essential fat for brain health, omega 3s. 00:09:18.99\00:09:21.89 But are there bad fats? Fats that you want to avoid if 00:09:21.89\00:09:26.33 you want to have good brain health? 00:09:26.33\00:09:28.06 NN: Yes. Arachidonic acid is one fat that 00:09:28.06\00:09:30.50 I would avoid. JB: What pray tell is 00:09:30.50\00:09:33.64 arachidonic acid? NN: Arachidonic acid is a 00:09:33.64\00:09:36.20 20-carbon molecule that's present in particularly 00:09:36.20\00:09:40.98 animal fat. It's going to be in flesh foods, 00:09:40.98\00:09:44.48 that actually causes inflammation in the 00:09:44.48\00:09:47.92 body. As it's metabolized you will get 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.69 some very pro-inflammatory molecules coming out of 00:09:50.69\00:09:54.02 arachidonic acid. And that adversely affects brain 00:09:54.02\00:09:57.43 health. It adversely affects it to the 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.00 degree where in a recent study out of Phoenix, Arizona, they 00:10:00.00\00:10:04.73 took people who were regular American diet, carnivores we 00:10:04.73\00:10:10.47 might call them, omnivores, and they had them stay on 00:10:10.47\00:10:13.78 their same diet or they changed them to a 00:10:13.78\00:10:16.51 plant-based diet with fish only to 00:10:16.51\00:10:20.72 get the omega 3s, the EPA and the DHA 00:10:20.72\00:10:24.82 that's present in fish. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.65 And then, the other diet was no exogenous form of fish omega 3. 00:10:26.65\00:10:34.76 So in other words, they were totally plant based, except 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.03 they could have dairy. But no eggs, because eggs have 00:10:38.03\00:10:41.44 arachidonic acid and dairy is low in it. 00:10:41.44\00:10:44.67 And they were going to see which is better for us, to get more 00:10:44.67\00:10:49.21 omega 3 and some arachidonic acid or no omega 3 from fish 00:10:49.21\00:10:55.25 and then have no arachidonic acid. 00:10:55.25\00:10:58.65 And so in two weeks they measured their anxiety-stress 00:10:58.65\00:11:03.22 scale and they measured their mood states. 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.73 There were a number of different tests they took before and 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.66 after. And the only group that had 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.47 statistically significant, in fact dramatic, improvement 00:11:10.47\00:11:14.00 in their mental health was the group that had no 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.50 arachidonic acid. It was the plant-based group. 00:11:16.50\00:11:19.97 And that surprised them. They thought the omega 3 might 00:11:19.97\00:11:23.08 have helped to counterbalance the arachidonic acid. 00:11:23.08\00:11:27.42 Omega 3 helps, but if we can get omega 3 without arachidonic 00:11:27.42\00:11:31.25 acid, we're in far better shape even though we might get less 00:11:31.25\00:11:34.82 omega 3. JB: You get it in fish? 00:11:34.82\00:11:36.59 NN: You do. Yeah, that's the problem, that's 00:11:36.59\00:11:38.49 why even the no-meat, fish-diet people did not do statistically 00:11:38.49\00:11:43.67 better than even the meat diet because they were getting all 00:11:43.67\00:11:47.57 the arachidonic acid from fish. JB: Can we go to the Bible and 00:11:47.57\00:11:51.34 find an example of somebody who made a dietary change 00:11:51.34\00:11:56.38 and experienced an enhancing of their mental health? 00:11:56.38\00:12:00.72 Where is that in the Word of God? 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.35 NN: Well, in the book of Daniel. In fact, the Journal of the 00:12:02.35\00:12:05.09 American Medical Association recently stated that the first 00:12:05.09\00:12:08.96 prospective epidemiological study ever recorded in human 00:12:08.96\00:12:12.76 history is from the book of Daniel. 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.00 JB: They stated that. NN: And that scene is the gold 00:12:15.00\00:12:17.57 standard study. So, a prospective 00:12:17.57\00:12:19.50 epidemiological study is when you make a 00:12:19.50\00:12:22.34 change in a group and then you compare them 00:12:22.34\00:12:25.61 with another group who does not make the change. 00:12:25.61\00:12:27.84 JB: Right. That's the story in Daniel 00:12:27.84\00:12:29.51 chapter 1. NN: That's right. 00:12:29.51\00:12:31.28 And it was actually proposed, that experiment was proposed 00:12:31.28\00:12:34.02 by Daniel himself, because he was getting pushback 00:12:34.02\00:12:37.12 from the ones in charge of him in changing his diet. 00:12:37.12\00:12:42.06 JB: Perhaps it's worth going to that story. 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.76 NN: Yeah. JB: Daniel chapter 1, and the 00:12:45.76\00:12:47.83 Bible says in Daniel 1:5, "The king appointed them a 00:12:47.83\00:12:50.03 daily provision of the king's meat and of the wine which 00:12:50.03\00:12:53.40 he drank, so nourishing them for three years so 00:12:53.40\00:12:56.77 at the end thereof they might stand before the 00:12:56.77\00:12:58.97 king." However, verse 8, what a verse. 00:12:58.97\00:13:02.18 "Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself 00:13:02.18\00:13:08.12 with the portion of the king's meat." 00:13:08.12\00:13:10.22 The king ate much like people eat today, the average American 00:13:10.22\00:13:13.25 diet. NN: Exactly. 00:13:13.25\00:13:15.02 JB: Yet the Bible says that for Daniel to eat that, he would 00:13:15.02\00:13:17.56 have been defiling himself. What is so defiling about the 00:13:17.56\00:13:21.86 standard American diet? NN: Well, we just mentioned it. 00:13:21.86\00:13:25.53 Arachidonic acid and also cholesterol, saturated 00:13:25.53\00:13:28.20 fat. It's not good for our heart, 00:13:28.20\00:13:30.37 it's not good for our blood vessels, not good for our 00:13:30.37\00:13:32.61 brain. JB: I want to challenge you, 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.58 doctor. Everything in moderation. 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.95 NN: Okay. JB: Have your patients ever told 00:13:37.95\00:13:40.22 you that, everything in moderation? 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.12 Doctor, I thought everything in moderation. 00:13:42.12\00:13:44.32 NN: More than just patients. I remember I was on a 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.22 television program, on a news program with a 00:13:46.22\00:13:48.19 cardiologist, who was telling the news program 00:13:48.19\00:13:52.56 as we were being interviewed. 00:13:52.56\00:13:54.30 "Well, I believe in everything in moderation." 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.16 There was a new stint that was coming out and they were 00:13:56.16\00:13:58.73 interviewing about this, and I didn't argue with 00:13:58.73\00:14:00.97 him on the set, But as soon as the set turned 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.97 off I said, "You know, Doctor, do you really believe in being 00:14:02.97\00:14:05.84 a moderate cigarette smoker?" JB: There you go. 00:14:05.84\00:14:08.71 NN: And he says, "Well, no, I didn't really mean that." 00:14:08.71\00:14:10.71 And I said, "Well, you said moderation in all things. 00:14:10.71\00:14:13.05 And the problem is when we're moderate in things that are 00:14:13.05\00:14:16.48 unhealthy, it not only is bad because it's unhealthy but it 00:14:16.48\00:14:22.52 actually undermines our ability to enjoy a lifestyle that is 00:14:22.52\00:14:26.86 free from that agent. And so we actually get far 00:14:26.86\00:14:30.07 better compliance. You know, this is the amazing 00:14:30.07\00:14:32.87 thing. A lot of people say, well, you 00:14:32.87\00:14:34.67 know, you don't want to put him just totally plant based 00:14:34.67\00:14:36.74 because it's really hard to do. 00:14:36.74\00:14:39.61 Did you know it's actually much harder to limit your meat 00:14:39.61\00:14:43.48 intake to three ounces a day as some people state, than 00:14:43.48\00:14:47.35 to just not eat it at all. If it is going to be unhealthy 00:14:47.35\00:14:50.55 for you, just make the choice not to eat it. 00:14:50.55\00:14:53.32 And what studies show is, you have more variety and more 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.86 taste in your diet, more enjoyment, 00:14:55.86\00:14:59.19 than if you would just try to limit yourself in portions of 00:14:59.19\00:15:03.43 food that it not so healthy for you. 00:15:03.43\00:15:05.70 JB: How is it that you can read the data that seems to very 00:15:05.70\00:15:10.94 clear, and somebody else can read presumably the 00:15:10.94\00:15:15.01 same data, or perhaps there are other studies, 00:15:15.01\00:15:17.28 and say a little really isn't going to hurt you. 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.55 Can you help me understand that attitude so that we may be able 00:15:19.55\00:15:22.92 to even combat it somehow? NN: Well, it is true that less 00:15:22.92\00:15:26.99 of bad things is better. I mean, I'll certainly go along 00:15:26.99\00:15:30.89 with that. But in reality the best program 00:15:30.89\00:15:34.83 is actually higher compliance. That's what the other group 00:15:34.83\00:15:39.73 doesn't understand. They think we're going to 00:15:39.73\00:15:41.74 decrease our compliance if we tell them to give up 00:15:41.74\00:15:44.84 something in their diet that they might have a 00:15:44.84\00:15:48.28 loving relationship with, and say well, no, don't 00:15:48.28\00:15:50.78 do that. We're not going to get as much 00:15:50.78\00:15:52.65 compliance, let's allow it for a little bit. 00:15:52.65\00:15:54.72 But in reality, because these foods tend to be addictive in 00:15:54.72\00:15:58.15 nature, we might limit it for a short time, but then we're 00:15:58.15\00:16:01.49 struggling and we're back to where we were again. 00:16:01.49\00:16:04.56 And so, what studies are showing is compliance, the ability for 00:16:04.56\00:16:09.10 the patient or the person to completely comply with an 00:16:09.10\00:16:12.20 ideal lifestyle is actually much higher than if we try 00:16:12.20\00:16:16.00 to just limit the bad. JB: It seems to me that if you 00:16:16.00\00:16:19.94 want to boost your brain and therefore your relationship with 00:16:19.94\00:16:22.84 God, it's virtually a matter of life and death. 00:16:22.84\00:16:27.15 And when there's a slight change you can make, I just wonder, 00:16:27.15\00:16:30.42 surely it's worth making that change. 00:16:30.42\00:16:32.65 NN: Yeah, Daniel did it. He didn't suffer from it. 00:16:32.65\00:16:35.12 JB: In just a moment, I want to ask you, we'll fast forward a 00:16:35.12\00:16:38.86 little bit and see if there are some modern examples of the 00:16:38.86\00:16:41.73 Daniel phenomenon. We'll be right back with more 00:16:41.73\00:16:44.13 boosting your brain here at It Is Written, back in just 00:16:44.13\00:16:48.04 a moment. 00:16:48.04\00:16:49.24 [music] "Every Word" is a one-minute, 00:16:49.50\00:16:51.67 Bible-based daily devotional presented by Pastor John 00:16:51.67\00:16:54.61 Bradshaw, and designed especially for busy people 00:16:54.61\00:16:57.35 like you. [music] 00:17:03.42\00:17:09.59 JB: There's a remarkable account in the gospel of Mark 00:17:14.20\00:17:15.83 that demonstrates that Jesus is able to satisfy the longing 00:17:15.83\00:17:18.57 of the human heart. In this account, a woman who had 00:17:18.57\00:17:21.14 been battling a troubling illness for twelve years 00:17:21.14\00:17:23.47 rested all of her hopes on Jesus. 00:17:23.47\00:17:26.07 She had tried doctors, and one would presume everything else 00:17:26.07\00:17:28.58 she knew, and now came to the point where she looked to 00:17:28.58\00:17:31.35 Christ. She said, "If I may touch but 00:17:31.35\00:17:34.05 his clothes, I shall be whole." Mark 5:28. 00:17:34.05\00:17:37.59 And she was - the moment she acted on her faith and 00:17:37.59\00:17:40.69 touched Jesus' clothing - just His clothing! 00:17:40.69\00:17:43.53 She was made completely well. Anyone can find the answer to 00:17:43.53\00:17:47.00 the longing of their heart in Jesus. 00:17:47.00\00:17:49.10 If you're looking for healing or hope, help or heaven itself, 00:17:49.10\00:17:52.37 you'll find that in Jesus, who came into the world 00:17:52.37\00:17:55.54 so we could have the 'more abundant life.' 00:17:55.54\00:17:59.11 Lean on Him today. Thank you for joining me today. 00:18:33.41\00:18:36.58 Boosting your brain, what can you do to get peak performance 00:18:36.58\00:18:39.55 from your gray matter and how does that affect your 00:18:39.55\00:18:43.52 relationship with God? Dr. Neil Nedley is my guest 00:18:43.52\00:18:46.49 today. A moment ago we talked about 00:18:46.49\00:18:48.02 Daniel in the Bible. He made a choice, a dietary 00:18:48.02\00:18:51.93 choice that was seen very clearly to have tremendous 00:18:51.93\00:18:56.10 benefits. Now, that was then. 00:18:56.10\00:18:58.40 What have you seen now? NN: Oh, amazing stories as a 00:18:58.40\00:19:02.70 result of a change in diet. JB: Share something with me. 00:19:02.70\00:19:05.24 NN: You know, I remember the first time when I was 00:19:05.24\00:19:07.18 researching diet and mental health. 00:19:07.18\00:19:09.38 There was a patient who I was asked to consult on in the 00:19:09.38\00:19:13.72 behavioral medicine unit for nutritional reasons. 00:19:13.72\00:19:16.35 The other doctors were realizing that I was learning a lot about 00:19:16.35\00:19:18.59 nutrition and mental health, so the psychiatrists would consult 00:19:18.59\00:19:21.12 me a lot in regard to nutrition. 00:19:21.12\00:19:24.06 And this lady, the reason why she sticks out is, she was a 00:19:24.06\00:19:26.49 charge nurse that I worked with on the oncology 00:19:26.49\00:19:28.70 floor. A very good nurse. 00:19:28.70\00:19:30.73 And she had become anorexic. In fact I'd noticed her losing 00:19:30.73\00:19:36.04 weight prior to that and then I didn't see her for a while 00:19:36.04\00:19:39.17 and then I realized she had gotten so severely depressed 00:19:39.17\00:19:41.98 and anorexic. She was admitted to the hospital 00:19:41.98\00:19:45.51 ward and had an NG tube down to actually feed her into her 00:19:45.51\00:19:48.25 stomach. We changed her diet and in two 00:19:48.25\00:19:51.59 weeks her depression was gone and her anorexia was gone. 00:19:51.59\00:19:55.69 And it was pretty dramatic, and that was the only thing we 00:19:55.69\00:19:58.16 changed in her. JB: Just her diet. 00:19:58.16\00:20:00.70 NN: Just the diet. And she did well. 00:20:00.70\00:20:02.86 Six months later she was working, doing very well, and 00:20:02.86\00:20:07.37 she thought, you know, let me just go back, now that 00:20:07.37\00:20:10.07 I'm doing so well let me just go back to the other 00:20:10.07\00:20:12.21 way I was eating. And so she went back and within 00:20:12.21\00:20:15.68 three weeks she was severely depressed and anorexic again. 00:20:15.68\00:20:19.28 Now, at that point she was educated, so she didn't 00:20:19.28\00:20:21.98 have to be readmitted to the hospital. 00:20:21.98\00:20:23.79 She thought, all right, I know what I've done. 00:20:23.79\00:20:25.85 I've changed my diet, I should not have done it. 00:20:25.85\00:20:28.12 Let's go back onto the diet that Dr. Nedley gave me. 00:20:28.12\00:20:31.69 And, within a couple of weeks, it took two weeks again, she 00:20:31.69\00:20:35.70 was back mentally healthy again. 00:20:35.70\00:20:37.43 And that was the, that's when I realized hey, this is very 00:20:37.43\00:20:40.70 dramatic stuff. And of course now we utilize a 00:20:40.70\00:20:43.41 nutritional approach in virtually all of our patients 00:20:43.41\00:20:46.11 that have a mental health issue and can see some 00:20:46.11\00:20:50.25 significant benefits. In fact, even the medical 00:20:50.25\00:20:53.62 literature is describing it as drug-like benefits without any 00:20:53.62\00:20:57.52 of the side effects, just by changing the diet. 00:20:57.52\00:21:00.12 JB: I had a fellow share his story with me recently. 00:21:00.12\00:21:02.99 He was a great big guy. His diabetes, the doctor told 00:21:02.99\00:21:07.03 him he would have to go on insulin. 00:21:07.03\00:21:09.20 He had all kinds of problems --this is really a diabetes 00:21:09.20\00:21:12.03 story, I suppose. But at the end of the day he 00:21:12.03\00:21:15.47 said, "No, no, no. Doctor let me take another 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.31 approach." The doctor said, "It's your 00:21:17.31\00:21:18.87 health." He said, "Give me a month." 00:21:18.87\00:21:20.78 And he researched, got onto a program just like what you 00:21:20.78\00:21:24.71 --not a program; he implemented lifestyle changes the same as 00:21:24.71\00:21:28.55 what you're talking about-- and what's significant is he 00:21:28.55\00:21:31.59 said food started tasting better, he lost a lot of weight, 00:21:31.59\00:21:34.56 no longer diabetic, and he said he'd never been happier. 00:21:34.56\00:21:39.19 His mental health was the best it had ever been. 00:21:39.19\00:21:43.20 Diet and lifestyle change. NN: Interestingly, a diabetic 00:21:43.20\00:21:48.47 diet normally is the best diet for mental health as well. 00:21:48.47\00:21:51.84 There's reasons for that, yeah. JB: Obesity is a big problem 00:21:51.84\00:21:55.58 confronting our nation, confronting the western 00:21:55.58\00:21:57.71 world. Is there a link between obesity 00:21:57.71\00:22:00.18 and mental health? NN: There is. 00:22:00.18\00:22:02.75 There's a link in a couple of different ways. 00:22:02.75\00:22:04.72 One is, if you are obese chances are you have what's called 00:22:04.72\00:22:08.16 metabolic syndrome. The way of knowing that is check 00:22:08.16\00:22:11.66 your blood sugar one hour after you eat. 00:22:11.66\00:22:14.63 If it's more than 140, metabolic syndrome. 00:22:14.63\00:22:18.10 You're going to have fatigue. You're going to be sluggish. 00:22:18.10\00:22:20.37 Your mental acuity is not going to be as sharp. 00:22:20.37\00:22:23.37 And, just getting on a weight-loss diet, even though 00:22:23.37\00:22:26.78 you're not down to ideal weight, but just losing the 00:22:26.78\00:22:28.88 first 5 pounds of that will actually improve the 00:22:28.88\00:22:32.01 metabolic syndrome. Keep the post-meal blood sugars 00:22:32.01\00:22:34.52 less than 140, and actually you will have a far better mood. 00:22:34.52\00:22:40.02 I think that's what was happening with the example 00:22:40.02\00:22:41.69 that you gave, with the diabetes example. 00:22:41.69\00:22:45.26 And so reversing that obesity trend can be helpful. 00:22:45.26\00:22:48.80 The other issue in regard to obesity and mental health is 00:22:48.80\00:22:51.27 that many people with depression actually try to make themselves 00:22:51.27\00:22:54.57 feel better by eating high sugary foods and high-fat 00:22:54.57\00:23:00.31 foods. JB: And that will give you a 00:23:00.31\00:23:01.81 high for a while, won't it? NN: That's right, the actual 00:23:01.81\00:23:04.08 sugar can transiently improve serotonin levels, cause a nadir 00:23:04.08\00:23:08.38 afterwards, and so they always feel like they have to snack 00:23:08.38\00:23:12.12 on something and they're always taking out-- 00:23:12.12\00:23:14.59 in fact I have a lot of patients that have come 00:23:14.59\00:23:16.52 to me and tell me about the chocolate they carry 00:23:16.52\00:23:18.73 around in their purses, and they have to have 00:23:18.73\00:23:20.96 this much every 20 minutes or they're going to crash. 00:23:20.96\00:23:23.33 That's how bad it can be. But in reality that can all be 00:23:23.33\00:23:26.67 reversed if we take care of the real underlying problems 00:23:26.67\00:23:30.24 and then there's not the need for this chocolate and 00:23:30.24\00:23:32.67 these dopamine rushes by consuming the super-sweet 00:23:32.67\00:23:36.51 foods that our society has to offer. 00:23:36.51\00:23:38.95 JB: Someone is watching and they're saying "Yeah, that's 00:23:38.95\00:23:40.75 good, but I could never do that. 00:23:40.75\00:23:44.05 I don't have the willpower; I can't make that change; 00:23:44.05\00:23:47.26 I'll never eat sea plants because they'll never 00:23:47.26\00:23:51.66 taste good to my taste buds." 00:23:51.66\00:23:53.53 I think we might want to come to the conclusion of this by 00:23:53.53\00:23:58.63 pointing people to the fact that there is power 00:23:58.63\00:24:02.74 in the Word of God. NN: Yes. Yes. 00:24:02.74\00:24:05.21 JB: The God who made you has the power to keep you, to improve 00:24:05.21\00:24:13.21 you, to change you. There's power in the Word of 00:24:13.21\00:24:16.75 God, isn't there. "Now unto him," Jude verse 24, 00:24:16.75\00:24:20.76 "who is able to keep you from falling." 00:24:20.76\00:24:23.69 How about that person who can't live without chicken nuggets or 00:24:23.69\00:24:27.40 whatever the case might be, and you've told me there's more 00:24:27.40\00:24:30.43 cholesterol in chicken than beef. 00:24:30.43\00:24:33.80 NN: That's right. JB: And that's a shocking 00:24:33.80\00:24:35.54 statement for some people. So you can't get by without your 00:24:35.54\00:24:38.14 fix of whatever it is. Could be beer, could be 00:24:38.14\00:24:41.61 marijuana, could be chocolate. 00:24:41.61\00:24:45.18 But listen to this, would you please: "There hath no 00:24:45.18\00:24:48.12 temptation taken you but such as is common 00:24:48.12\00:24:51.22 to man. But God is faithful who will not 00:24:51.22\00:24:55.26 suffer [or allow you] to be tempted above that you 00:24:55.26\00:25:00.46 are able. But will, with the temptation, 00:25:00.46\00:25:04.03 also make a way to escape that you may be able to bear it." 00:25:04.03\00:25:08.77 1 Corinthians 10:13. There is no challenge, no 00:25:08.77\00:25:12.94 struggle, too big and bad that God can't get you 00:25:12.94\00:25:16.08 through it. So if you're wanting to boost 00:25:16.08\00:25:17.78 your brain and fire on all cylinders and get 00:25:17.78\00:25:20.95 everything working right, the neurotransmitters and 00:25:20.95\00:25:23.75 the neurons and these other things working 00:25:23.75\00:25:28.12 just like they should, you can, because you 00:25:28.12\00:25:30.73 know Who's on your side? 00:25:30.73\00:25:32.69 God is on your side. And remember what the Bible 00:25:32.69\00:25:35.10 promises: "God's strength is made perfect in weakness." 00:25:35.10\00:25:39.63 So if you are weak, God can deliver you. 00:25:39.63\00:25:44.17 He will unite His strength to your weakness, and you'll be 00:25:44.17\00:25:47.58 a new person. JB: If you'd like to know what 00:25:47.58\00:25:51.71 the Bible says about how to live the longest, healthiest life 00:25:51.71\00:25:54.52 possible, let me send you our free booklet, "Living 00:25:54.52\00:25:58.05 Life to the Fullest."
