[Music rings out] ? 00:00:32.13\00:00:36.23 John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:36.93\00:00:38.20 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:38.20\00:00:39.33 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:39.33\00:00:40.86 My guest today is Dr. Neil Nedley, 00:00:40.86\00:00:43.03 the president of Nedley Health Solutions. 00:00:43.03\00:00:45.50 Dr. Nedley, thanks for joining me today. 00:00:45.50\00:00:47.80 Neil Nedley: Thank you. 00:00:47.80\00:00:48.30 Great to be here. 00:00:48.30\00:00:49.50 JB: We've spoken a number of times on this program. 00:00:49.50\00:00:51.46 It's always a blessing to have you here. 00:00:51.46\00:00:53.80 I'm grateful that you're willing to take heavy topics head on, 00:00:53.80\00:00:58.06 and tell us not maybe what we always want to hear, 00:00:58.06\00:01:01.03 but certainly according to the Bible and good science, 00:01:01.03\00:01:04.50 what we need to hear. 00:01:04.50\00:01:05.93 NN: Yes. 00:01:05.93\00:01:06.56 JB: And today we're going to visit the subject of cancer. 00:01:06.56\00:01:10.30 And here's why. 00:01:10.30\00:01:12.26 Um, our health, our physical health, 00:01:12.26\00:01:16.46 our emotional health, our mental health, is all very 00:01:16.46\00:01:20.76 important in and of itself. 00:01:20.76\00:01:23.30 But also very important as it relates to our spiritual health. 00:01:23.30\00:01:28.36 NN: Um-hum. 00:01:28.36\00:01:28.93 JB: There's that old saying, healthy body, healthy mind. 00:01:28.93\00:01:31.10 Well, truth be told, when it comes to our relationship with 00:01:31.10\00:01:33.16 God, there's a whole lot of truth in that. 00:01:33.16\00:01:36.66 What's our immune system? 00:01:36.66\00:01:37.93 How does it work? 00:01:37.93\00:01:39.33 NN: Our immune system is there to detect foreign invaders that 00:01:39.33\00:01:43.66 are harmful to us. 00:01:43.66\00:01:45.76 Or to detect abnormal cells that, uh, are not really our own 00:01:45.76\00:01:51.80 good cells and to destroy them. 00:01:51.80\00:01:55.03 JB: Now, cancer cells are those abnormal cells. 00:01:55.03\00:01:56.76 Why doesn't our immune system just see them and [snap] 00:01:56.76\00:01:59.40 take them out? 00:01:59.40\00:02:00.43 NN: Well, uh, often because they look pretty similar 00:02:00.43\00:02:02.83 to the original. 00:02:02.83\00:02:03.96 JB: You mean you're saying that the immune system sometimes just 00:02:03.96\00:02:06.40 doesn't recognize cancer cells? 00:02:06.40\00:02:07.73 NN: That's right. 00:02:07.73\00:02:08.33 Exactly. 00:02:08.33\00:02:08.93 And so it will leave it alone thinking that it's actually a 00:02:08.93\00:02:12.10 normal cell. 00:02:12.10\00:02:12.96 JB: Okay. 00:02:12.96\00:02:13.56 Now, are all immune systems created, well, I suppose they're 00:02:13.56\00:02:16.53 created equal, but to you and I, or me and the guy next door, 00:02:16.53\00:02:20.33 do we have essentially the same immune system or is one up 00:02:20.33\00:02:22.86 and one down? 00:02:22.86\00:02:23.86 NN: No, one can be up and one can be down in accordance 00:02:23.86\00:02:27.90 with our lifestyle. 00:02:27.90\00:02:28.66 So, what we're putting into our bodies, what we're doing with 00:02:28.66\00:02:30.56 our bodies, is either enhancing our immune system or actually 00:02:30.56\00:02:34.40 making it less effective. 00:02:34.40\00:02:35.80 JB: Well, we want to have a more effective immune system. 00:02:35.80\00:02:38.30 NN: Correct. 00:02:38.30\00:02:39.20 JB: How can we have that? 00:02:39.20\00:02:40.56 NN: Well, uh, by paying attention to what we're 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.86 putting into our body. 00:02:42.86\00:02:43.93 JB: Okay. 00:02:43.93\00:02:44.50 Food, drink. 00:02:44.50\00:02:45.60 NN: Food, drink, yes. 00:02:45.60\00:02:47.40 And even important vitamins like vitamin D. 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.90 Uh, and A, C and E. 00:02:50.90\00:02:53.33 And, uh, and those sorts of things. 00:02:53.33\00:02:55.40 JB: Share with me what science says makes for a good immune 00:02:55.40\00:03:00.76 system? 00:03:00.76\00:03:01.30 List, list off some of the foods we want. 00:03:01.30\00:03:04.63 NN: The foods high in antioxidants. 00:03:04.63\00:03:06.60 So, your berries in particular. 00:03:06.60\00:03:08.33 Raspberry, blackberries, blueberries. 00:03:08.33\00:03:10.83 JB: That's good. 00:03:10.83\00:03:11.90 NN: Uh, you know, strawberries very good. 00:03:11.90\00:03:14.86 Even red grapes are very good. 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.66 Kiwi, uh. 00:03:17.66\00:03:19.66 JB: Very good. 00:03:19.66\00:03:20.33 NN: Yeah. 00:03:20.33\00:03:20.76 Cherries are actually good antioxidant fruits. 00:03:20.76\00:03:25.66 JB: Isn't it interesting that God made, 00:03:25.66\00:03:27.83 these are the fun foods. 00:03:27.83\00:03:29.06 NN: Yeah. 00:03:29.06\00:03:29.66 JB: You know. 00:03:29.66\00:03:30.13 Who doesn't want to sit down with a, with a plate of 00:03:30.13\00:03:32.53 blueberries or raspberries or strawberries, 00:03:32.53\00:03:34.36 something like that? 00:03:34.36\00:03:35.03 NN: Right. 00:03:35.03\00:03:35.60 And fruit particularly decreases the risk of, uh, of lung cancer. 00:03:35.60\00:03:39.20 One of the most common cancers. 00:03:39.20\00:03:40.70 JB: Fruit in general? 00:03:40.70\00:03:41.66 NN: Yes. 00:03:41.66\00:03:42.36 The more fruit. 00:03:42.36\00:03:43.60 JB: I like that. 00:03:43.60\00:03:44.30 NN: Even, uh, not only among smokers, but also non-smokers, 00:03:44.30\00:03:47.46 the study in southern California on Seventh-Day Adventists showed 00:03:47.46\00:03:51.80 that non-smokers can get lung cancer, but they only get it 00:03:51.80\00:03:54.50 about 20% as likely if they're on a high fruit diet. 00:03:54.50\00:03:58.73 So, it's important. Yeah. 00:03:58.73\00:04:02.23 JB: So, these, the antioxidant foods, whenever we talk about 00:04:02.23\00:04:05.56 foods that are good for your health, it seems as though leafy 00:04:05.56\00:04:08.23 greens are always up there. 00:04:08.23\00:04:10.33 Leafy green vegetables have a positive impact on our immune 00:04:10.33\00:04:13.83 system? 00:04:13.83\00:04:14.33 NN: They do. 00:04:14.33\00:04:14.83 Yup. 00:04:14.83\00:04:15.43 Spinach, kale, great antioxidants, 00:04:15.43\00:04:19.50 garlic, onion, beets. 00:04:19.50\00:04:21.70 JB: All right, not bad. 00:04:21.70\00:04:22.90 NN: Yeah. 00:04:22.90\00:04:23.50 JB: All right. 00:04:23.50\00:04:24.20 I think we can, we can handle that. 00:04:24.20\00:04:25.30 NN: Yeah. 00:04:25.30\00:04:25.93 Good foods. 00:04:25.93\00:04:26.50 JB: Then here's a good thing. 00:04:26.50\00:04:27.43 I want you to notice this. 00:04:27.43\00:04:28.26 When you're talking about looking after your immune 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.60 system, this isn't onerous or hard or awful or awkward. 00:04:30.60\00:04:33.73 You know what it sounds a lot like? 00:04:33.73\00:04:36.00 It sounds a lot like the kind of stuff grandma used to eat. 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.56 And when I say grandma, I mean, my wife's southern 00:04:39.56\00:04:43.53 American grandma. 00:04:43.53\00:04:45.23 Black-eyed peas and crowder peas and beans and you know. 00:04:45.23\00:04:49.86 NN: Yeah, yeah. 00:04:49.86\00:04:50.60 JB: Food I never even heard of growing up on the other side of 00:04:50.60\00:04:52.93 the world, right? 00:04:52.93\00:04:54.73 It's the sort of stuff that grandma and her family, 00:04:54.73\00:04:57.53 her, her brothers, they all lived to be pretty old. 00:04:57.53\00:05:00.33 NN: Right. 00:05:00.33\00:05:01.26 JB: And yet on the other hand, there were some aspects of their 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.33 diet that was a disaster. 00:05:04.33\00:05:06.50 NN: Yeah. 00:05:06.50\00:05:07.13 JB: I wonder if the fact that they ate some things that any 00:05:07.13\00:05:11.20 doctor would say slow down about, I wonder if that was 00:05:11.20\00:05:13.80 offset by the very high amounts of very healthy foods. 00:05:13.80\00:05:18.00 Is there anything to that idea? 00:05:18.00\00:05:19.06 NN: Well, yes, you can offset it some. 00:05:19.06\00:05:20.93 You know, for instance, studies have shown that smokers, 00:05:20.93\00:05:25.46 if they're on a high carotenoid diet will only have one-third 00:05:25.46\00:05:29.70 the risk of developing lung cancer compared to smokers 00:05:29.70\00:05:32.76 who are not on a good diet. 00:05:32.76\00:05:34.60 But, if you take a non-smoker who's not on a good diet, 00:05:34.60\00:05:39.20 his chance of lung cancer is only 1 out of 10 compared to 00:05:39.20\00:05:43.66 the smoker who's on a good diet. 00:05:43.66\00:05:45.63 So, in other words, the cigarette smoking, 00:05:45.63\00:05:47.66 the diet does help. 00:05:47.66\00:05:48.66 JB: Okay. 00:05:48.66\00:05:49.56 NN: And all of that, the immune system does help, but if we 00:05:49.56\00:05:52.03 overload the system with carcinogens, we're going to 00:05:52.03\00:05:55.30 likely pay for that. 00:05:55.30\00:05:56.20 JB: Sure, sure. 00:05:56.20\00:05:56.86 So, you can't say, you know, I'm eating enough carotenoids. 00:05:56.86\00:06:01.23 The carotenoid foods are the yellows and the oranges, right? 00:06:01.23\00:06:03.50 NN: Correct. 00:06:03.50\00:06:04.00 JB: Whatever is yellow and orange, that's good for you. 00:06:04.00\00:06:06.00 NN: That's right. 00:06:06.00\00:06:06.70 JB: Yeah, that's good to know. 00:06:06.70\00:06:08.03 So, we can optimize our immune system by eating well, I'm going 00:06:08.03\00:06:11.10 to guess by, by sleeping well? 00:06:11.10\00:06:14.10 NN: Getting enough sleep, that's right., 00:06:14.10\00:06:15.43 JB: Exercise. 00:06:15.43\00:06:16.26 NN: Exercise. 00:06:16.26\00:06:17.40 Particularly aerobic exercise, becoming fit is going to enhance 00:06:17.40\00:06:21.06 your immune system. 00:06:21.06\00:06:22.36 JB: And you said vitamins A, C, E, and D. 00:06:22.36\00:06:25.76 NN: Yes. 00:06:25.76\00:06:26.60 Vitamin D it turns out is the most crucial, if we were to 00:06:26.60\00:06:31.46 weigh them against each other, vitamin D actually prevents more 00:06:31.46\00:06:36.60 cancers than A, C, and E combined. 00:06:36.60\00:06:39.40 JB: Combined. 00:06:39.40\00:06:40.10 NN: Yeah. 00:06:40.10\00:06:40.70 JB: Okay, we need the D. 00:06:40.70\00:06:41.40 What's, where do I find the vitamin D? 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.20 NN: The sun. 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.33 JB: Okay. 00:06:45.33\00:06:46.40 Now somebody like me with very fair skin, I need to make sure 00:06:46.40\00:06:49.10 I'm getting just enough and not too much. 00:06:49.10\00:06:50.70 NN: That's right. 00:06:50.70\00:06:51.20 You need to make sure you're not getting too much. 00:06:51.20\00:06:52.90 But here is what a lot of people are not aware of. 00:06:52.90\00:06:56.40 The sun prevents far more cancer than it causes. 00:06:56.40\00:07:00.10 JB: Is that so? 00:07:00.10\00:07:01.40 NN: And so, if you are low in vitamin D and you avoid the 00:07:01.40\00:07:06.06 sunburn and thus avoid skin cancers, you're actually going 00:07:06.06\00:07:10.13 to have a much higher rate of other cancers than if you would 00:07:10.13\00:07:13.86 have gotten a little bit of sunburn and gotten the benefits 00:07:13.86\00:07:18.53 of the vitamin D. 00:07:18.53\00:07:19.43 JB: I'm thinking though it's not necessary to get sunburned 00:07:19.43\00:07:22.26 to get enough sun. 00:07:22.26\00:07:23.30 NN: It's not. 00:07:23.30\00:07:23.63 JB: How, how much sun is enough sun? 00:07:23.63\00:07:25.26 Generally. 00:07:25.26\00:07:25.90 And it may vary from person to person. 00:07:25.90\00:07:27.06 NN: Well, it depends on where you're at. 00:07:27.06\00:07:29.40 I know if it's a summer day in the South, it doesn't take much, 00:07:29.40\00:07:33.26 you know, 15 minutes and you're done. 00:07:33.26\00:07:35.73 You've got enough vitamin D and you're not going to burn 00:07:35.73\00:07:38.20 yourself in 15 minutes in most cases. 00:07:38.20\00:07:40.53 JB: Okay. 00:07:40.53\00:07:41.63 NN: Um, so you don't need all that much sun exposure. 00:07:41.63\00:07:43.96 Now, you know, if you're above Sacramento, California 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.73 and all the way over to Boston, Massachusetts in the winter time 00:07:46.73\00:07:49.60 you're not getting any vitamin D. 00:07:49.60\00:07:51.63 So you need to get a lot in the summer to store it over. 00:07:51.63\00:07:55.53 JB: And you can store it up? 00:07:55.53\00:07:56.43 NN: You can store it. 00:07:56.43\00:07:57.23 Yeah, vitamin D is fat soluble, so it's storable in the system. 00:07:57.23\00:08:02.40 Uh, but, or you might need to take vitamin D supplements. 00:08:02.40\00:08:06.23 JB: What about folks who live way north, up in Alaska, you 00:08:06.23\00:08:10.30 know, where the sun barely even pokes its head above the horizon 00:08:10.30\00:08:14.53 for much of the year? 00:08:14.53\00:08:15.66 NN: Yeah. 00:08:15.66\00:08:16.13 They'll have very low vitamin D levels and thus they have higher 00:08:16.13\00:08:18.50 cancer rates. 00:08:18.50\00:08:19.43 JB: They do, huh? 00:08:19.43\00:08:20.23 NN: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. 00:08:20.23\00:08:21.86 Now, hopefully, they're outdoors in the summertime, because even 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.36 up in Alaska you can get some vitamin D, you know, in midday 00:08:24.36\00:08:28.16 in the summertime. 00:08:28.16\00:08:29.46 JB: Yeah, yeah. 00:08:29.46\00:08:30.46 Back to antioxidants. 00:08:30.46\00:08:33.60 I understand there's a school of thought where people are saying 00:08:33.60\00:08:37.86 antioxidants may even be bad for you if you have cancer. 00:08:37.86\00:08:41.83 And so, I'm going to ask you about that. 00:08:41.83\00:08:43.26 NN: Okay. 00:08:43.26\00:08:43.73 JB: In just a moment. 00:08:43.73\00:08:44.66 There's more to talk about today because when it comes to cancer 00:08:44.66\00:08:51.33 there really is hope and you want to know what that is. 00:08:51.33\00:08:55.66 We'll be back with more straight ahead. 00:08:55.66\00:08:58.93 [Gentle Music)] >: In Matthew 4:4, 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.13 the Word of God says, It is written, 00:09:02.13\00:09:04.40 man shall not live by bread alone, 00:09:04.40\00:09:06.23 but by every word that proceeds 00:09:06.23\00:09:08.86 from the mouth of God. 00:09:08.86\00:09:10.10 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily 00:09:10.10\00:09:13.46 devotional presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 00:09:13.46\00:09:16.43 especially for busy people like you. 00:09:16.43\00:09:18.66 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks 00:09:18.66\00:09:21.63 or watch it online every day on our web site, 00:09:21.63\00:09:23.96 ItIsWritten.com. 00:09:23.96\00:09:25.86 Receive a daily spiritual boost, watch "Every Word." 00:09:25.86\00:09:29.56 You'll be glad you did. 00:09:29.56\00:09:31.10 Here's a sample. 00:09:31.43\00:09:33.43 ? [Rythmic Melody] ? 00:09:34.26\00:09:37.56 JB: One of the most famous passages in the Bible, 00:09:41.66\00:09:43.86 it's found in the 23rd Psalm. 00:09:43.86\00:09:45.90 And no wonder, it's filled with wonderfully evocative language 00:09:45.90\00:09:49.16 that paints a remarkably assuring and comforting picture 00:09:49.16\00:09:51.86 of God. 00:09:51.86\00:09:53.30 It starts by saying in Psalm 23:1, 00:09:53.30\00:09:55.76 "The Lord is my shepherd." 00:09:55.76\00:09:57.80 David wrote this Psalm and he knew by experience what a 00:09:57.80\00:10:00.10 shepherd went through to care for the sheep. 00:10:00.10\00:10:02.66 Remember, David spent time with the sheep. 00:10:02.66\00:10:05.10 He defended them from harm and he realized that the sheep were 00:10:05.10\00:10:07.93 precious, valuable. 00:10:07.93\00:10:10.10 A family's livelihood was often bound up in that flock. 00:10:10.10\00:10:13.46 When David says that the Lord is our shepherd, you can know that 00:10:13.46\00:10:16.60 God is telling us that he's with us, he defends us, and he 00:10:16.60\00:10:20.03 regards us as of great value. 00:10:20.03\00:10:23.03 There's someone with you today, be encouraged. 00:10:23.03\00:10:25.70 The Lord is your shepherd. 00:10:25.70\00:10:27.70 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:10:27.70\00:10:29.86 Let's live today by every word. 00:10:29.86\00:10:33.73 JB: This is It Is Written, thanks for joining me today. 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.06 I'm John Bradshaw being joined by Dr. Neil Nedley 00:10:37.06\00:10:39.86 the president of Nedley Health Solutions. 00:10:39.86\00:10:42.76 Cancer, is there hope? 00:10:42.76\00:10:44.46 Why does it matter? 00:10:44.46\00:10:45.70 This is It Is Written, I'll tell you why. 00:10:45.70\00:10:47.50 We were designed and made intentionally by a loving 00:10:47.50\00:10:51.23 creator God. 00:10:51.23\00:10:52.43 He put us on this earth to live long and prosper. 00:10:52.43\00:10:56.63 Yet because of sin entering the picture, we are beset and 00:10:56.63\00:11:00.96 dragged down and weighed down by all kinds of diseases and what 00:11:00.96\00:11:05.26 they do is they sap our lives in so many ways, and ultimately 00:11:05.26\00:11:09.03 negatively affect our relationship with God. 00:11:09.03\00:11:11.20 We don't want that. 00:11:11.20\00:11:12.80 If cancer strikes, is there hope? 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.90 We're going to get to that in just a moment. 00:11:14.90\00:11:16.70 Dr. Nedley, I wanted to ask you about antioxidants because there 00:11:16.70\00:11:19.90 are some, and no doubt many have heard this line of reasoning, 00:11:19.90\00:11:25.06 antioxidants are bad for you if you have cancer. 00:11:25.06\00:11:27.76 Is there anything to that? 00:11:27.76\00:11:29.40 NN: Yeah, well, the theory was that since antioxidants protect 00:11:29.40\00:11:33.40 cells from being damaged that maybe they're protecting our 00:11:33.40\00:11:37.76 cancer cells from the chemotherapy destroying it. 00:11:37.76\00:11:41.20 JB: Okay. 00:11:41.20\00:11:41.90 NN: And so, many oncologists, based on theory alone, no 00:11:41.90\00:11:45.93 science behind it other than the theory, were advising people to 00:11:45.93\00:11:50.13 be on a very poor diet. 00:11:50.13\00:11:51.60 JB: Oh, my. 00:11:51.60\00:11:52.10 NN: Poor in antioxidants, while they're on cancer treatment of 00:11:52.10\00:11:55.40 radiation and chemo to make sure the cancer gets destroyed. 00:11:55.40\00:11:59.00 Well, in reality the antioxidants protect our good 00:11:59.00\00:12:02.63 cells and they don't protect our bad cells. 00:12:02.63\00:12:06.46 And so, what happens is the longevity of people on 00:12:06.46\00:12:10.56 antioxidants when they're on cancer treatment is even higher 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.60 because we want to protect our good cells. 00:12:13.60\00:12:16.13 And the unfortunate thing is radiation and chemo can destroy 00:12:16.13\00:12:19.06 some of the good cells. 00:12:19.06\00:12:20.03 JB: Yes. 00:12:20.03\00:12:20.63 NN: And that's why we can have side effects that can be even 00:12:20.63\00:12:23.13 deadly sometimes from these things. 00:12:23.13\00:12:25.43 Wherefore on a high antioxidant program, uh, we're not going to 00:12:25.43\00:12:29.76 protect our cancer cells at all from these treatments. 00:12:29.76\00:12:32.50 JB: Certainly, one should always have faith in God. 00:12:32.50\00:12:35.03 But what's the role for a believer in God and somebody who 00:12:35.03\00:12:38.10 stands on the Bible, what's the role in their experience for 00:12:38.10\00:12:42.46 things such as radiation and chemotherapy? 00:12:42.46\00:12:46.26 NN: Yeah, or maybe we could even start out with surgery. 00:12:46.26\00:12:48.83 I've heard it said that, hey, you know, stay away from surgery 00:12:48.83\00:12:53.30 because it's going to spread your cancer. 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.30 JB: Oh, that's wrong. 00:12:55.30\00:12:55.76 NN: And it's going to have all of those issues. 00:12:55.76\00:12:58.00 And sometimes I've had to remind these Christians 00:12:58.00\00:13:00.90 which came first, sin or surgery? 00:13:00.90\00:13:04.06 JB: There you go. 00:13:04.06\00:13:04.90 NN: And often they tell me, well, of course, sin came first. 00:13:04.90\00:13:07.86 Actually, no. 00:13:07.86\00:13:09.10 Surgery came first and both patients were satisfied 00:13:09.10\00:13:12.10 with the results. 00:13:12.10\00:13:13.13 JB: (laughs) Yes, that's right. 00:13:13.13\00:13:14.60 Explain, for somebody who didn't get that, 00:13:14.60\00:13:15.96 what are you referring to? 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.03 NN: Well, actually before surgery there was anesthesia. 00:13:17.03\00:13:20.10 JB: There you go. 00:13:20.10\00:13:22.06 God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep and he performed a 00:13:22.06\00:13:24.26 little surgical procedure and removed a rib 00:13:24.26\00:13:26.23 and by the time he was done NN: That's right. 00:13:26.23\00:13:28.16 JB: Adam was happy. 00:13:28.16\00:13:29.10 NN: Exactly. 00:13:29.10\00:13:29.93 And, well, God can, God can guide the hand of the surgeon. 00:13:29.93\00:13:33.93 JB: Yes. 00:13:33.93\00:13:34.56 NN: Um, there are, are skilled surgeons that 00:13:34.56\00:13:36.93 the Lord can guide in actually taking out these tumors. 00:13:36.93\00:13:39.63 And, no, surgery does not increase the risk 00:13:39.63\00:13:43.66 of the cancer spreading. 00:13:43.66\00:13:45.13 If it's confined and can be taken care of that way, 00:13:45.13\00:13:48.86 that's a good choice. 00:13:48.86\00:13:50.90 JB: Some of the side effects from chemotherapy and radiation 00:13:50.90\00:13:54.46 can be brutal. 00:13:54.46\00:13:55.76 Some can. 00:13:55.76\00:13:57.16 So, is it a, a, a denial of faith in God to go 00:13:57.16\00:14:02.00 the medical route? 00:14:02.00\00:14:03.33 NN: It's not. 00:14:03.33\00:14:03.83 I'll tell you, there was a, um, a patient of mine that had 00:14:03.83\00:14:08.53 advanced breast cancer. 00:14:08.53\00:14:09.73 She didn't come to me until her breast cancer was very advanced 00:14:09.73\00:14:13.13 and it was bleeding. 00:14:13.13\00:14:15.10 Um, just huge, she was, you know, 00:14:15.10\00:14:17.30 a believer, and, um, said that, you know, 00:14:17.30\00:14:20.93 or believed that she shouldn't have surgery or treatment. 00:14:20.93\00:14:23.23 She was trying all these natural remedies and her daughter was 00:14:23.23\00:14:26.63 putting charcoal on it and it was now getting into some 00:14:26.63\00:14:30.36 significant arteries and sometimes she would have 00:14:30.36\00:14:32.63 significant massive bleeding. 00:14:32.63\00:14:34.40 We were having to transfuse her. 00:14:34.40\00:14:37.13 And she wouldn't be convinced otherwise. 00:14:37.13\00:14:39.90 Uh, and finally I came into her and I gave her this 00:14:39.90\00:14:43.20 illustration. 00:14:43.20\00:14:44.90 I said, there was a cancer on the earth, you know, when, 00:14:44.90\00:14:49.70 for instance, when the Amalekites first came 00:14:49.70\00:14:51.80 across the Israelites, God said, no, now is not the time. 00:14:51.80\00:14:56.80 But eventually they got to the place where if they would have 00:14:56.80\00:15:01.06 continued to exist, the cancers of sin that they would have 00:15:01.06\00:15:04.46 produced on this earth could have potentially 00:15:04.46\00:15:07.13 wiped out the entire earth. 00:15:07.13\00:15:08.46 JB: Right. 00:15:08.46\00:15:08.96 NN: And so, the Lord said, get rid of them, 00:15:08.96\00:15:12.16 every last one of them. 00:15:12.16\00:15:15.36 And in those battles where Israel was told to fight, 00:15:15.36\00:15:19.16 they often lost good soldiers in those battles. 00:15:19.16\00:15:21.56 JB: That's right. 00:15:21.56\00:15:22.16 NN: And sometimes hundreds of, uh, of Israelites were killed 00:15:22.16\00:15:25.66 that were good people, but it was for a good cause 00:15:25.66\00:15:29.46 of wiping out a cancer that was on the earth. 00:15:29.46\00:15:32.83 And so, as I explained that to her, I said, think of 00:15:32.83\00:15:35.16 chemotherapy as warring against your cancer cells. 00:15:35.16\00:15:39.43 Yes, it may destroy some good cells, but if your 00:15:39.43\00:15:43.13 cancer cells are not destroyed, this cancer will destroy you. 00:15:43.13\00:15:48.03 That was eight years ago. 00:15:48.03\00:15:50.53 After that, she told her family to all leave who were trying to 00:15:50.53\00:15:54.00 convince her into chemo for, you know, 00:15:54.00\00:15:56.10 quite a long period of time, and she sat there with me 00:15:56.10\00:16:00.20 and wanted to fully understand what I was saying and then she 00:16:00.20\00:16:03.13 had me leave the room and then 30 minutes later she had us come 00:16:03.13\00:16:06.03 and she said, I'm made my decision, we're going to undergo 00:16:06.03\00:16:08.40 chemotherapy. 00:16:08.40\00:16:09.83 JB: And she's alive today? 00:16:09.83\00:16:10.73 NN: And she's alive today and that tumor shrunk right down. 00:16:10.73\00:16:14.13 We put her on a good other program, with good antioxidants 00:16:14.13\00:16:17.10 and other things to try to help protect those cells. 00:16:17.10\00:16:19.80 But she is eternally grateful because she would have been in 00:16:19.80\00:16:22.20 the grave within a matter of weeks, um, 00:16:22.20\00:16:24.53 had that not taken place. 00:16:24.53\00:16:25.83 JB: It's not a disavowal of faith in God to seek good 00:16:25.83\00:16:28.20 medical treatment. 00:16:28.20\00:16:29.53 NN: That's right. 00:16:29.53\00:16:29.93 JB: That's not to say all chemo is right in all cases for all 00:16:29.93\00:16:36.66 people in all situations. 00:16:36.66\00:16:37.76 NN: That's right. 00:16:37.76\00:16:38.16 JB: Right. 00:16:38.16\00:16:38.73 NN: Right. 00:16:38.73\00:16:39.30 JB: And if you, if you go a conventional medical route under 00:16:39.30\00:16:42.53 the guidance of, of good physicians, 00:16:42.53\00:16:45.03 that's not to say you can't do other things. 00:16:45.03\00:16:46.76 Because you still have faith in God. 00:16:46.76\00:16:48.53 NN: That's right. 00:16:48.53\00:16:48.93 JB: And still do, do natural things that wouldn't harm your 00:16:48.93\00:16:51.73 immune system. 00:16:51.73\00:16:53.03 NN: But we do need to understand that if cancer cells are not 00:16:53.03\00:16:56.03 destroyed, they will destroy you, and it gets down to the 00:16:56.03\00:16:58.96 point where we have to destroy every last one. 00:16:58.96\00:17:00.90 JB: Yeah. 00:17:00.90\00:17:01.53 NN: If there's one of them there, it's going to start 00:17:01.53\00:17:03.90 reproducing and within several years it's going to actually 00:17:03.90\00:17:08.03 come back. 00:17:08.03\00:17:08.80 JB: Cancer, is there hope? 00:17:08.80\00:17:11.30 Why are we talking about this? 00:17:11.30\00:17:12.80 Clearly God wants us to live an abundant life. 00:17:12.80\00:17:15.70 Cancer affects one in two men and one in three women in the 00:17:15.70\00:17:19.56 United States. 00:17:19.56\00:17:20.70 Dr. Nedley, somebody has cancer, invasive cancer, we've spoken 00:17:20.70\00:17:25.10 just a few moments ago about, uh, various options, but what, 00:17:25.10\00:17:29.66 what does a person do, should a person, 00:17:29.66\00:17:32.33 could a person do when they've got it? 00:17:32.33\00:17:35.13 NN: Well, when they've got invasive cancer, there's good 00:17:35.13\00:17:37.40 questions that they need to ask their cancer doctors. 00:17:37.40\00:17:40.33 What is, what is my likelihood of cure with this treatment? 00:17:40.33\00:17:44.00 What is my likelihood of remission? 00:17:44.00\00:17:46.46 Avail themselves of good evidence-based treatments. 00:17:46.46\00:17:51.86 But at the same time, they need to see what they can do to get 00:17:51.86\00:17:55.93 on the best nutrition and lifestyle program. 00:17:55.93\00:18:00.06 A lot of people have this mistake thinking, hey, I've 00:18:00.06\00:18:03.26 already god cancer, so why change my lifestyle now? 00:18:03.26\00:18:08.00 And studies show that if you change your lifestyle for the 00:18:08.00\00:18:10.46 better, you significantly improve your odds. 00:18:10.46\00:18:12.73 For instance, if you have lung cancer and don't quit smoking, 00:18:12.73\00:18:16.00 your chance of cancer recurrence is far higher than 00:18:16.00\00:18:19.40 if you quit smoking. 00:18:19.40\00:18:20.33 JB: Right. 00:18:20.33\00:18:20.96 NN: If you have colon cancer and you continue to eat red meat, 00:18:20.96\00:18:25.00 your chance of recurrence is higher than if you don't eat 00:18:25.00\00:18:27.50 red meat. 00:18:27.50\00:18:29.33 And so, what you need to do is also get in touch with a 00:18:29.33\00:18:34.53 clinician or a physician who can give you the evidence-based 00:18:34.53\00:18:38.93 therapies that can be utilized in conjunction with traditional 00:18:38.93\00:18:43.30 therapies that can improve your odds. 00:18:43.30\00:18:47.03 JB: Natural remedies. 00:18:47.03\00:18:49.13 They come in all different shapes and sizes. 00:18:49.13\00:18:51.46 What are some that have been demonstrated to help in, uh, 00:18:51.46\00:18:58.23 the case of cancer? 00:18:58.23\00:18:59.10 And I just want to say to you, at the risk of sounding 00:18:59.10\00:19:00.86 redundant, I'm not one who advocates ignoring conventional 00:19:00.86\00:19:07.26 cancer treatment and going the whole hog on natural remedies. 00:19:07.26\00:19:11.06 If God leads a person to do that, that's fine, but I, I'm 00:19:11.06\00:19:13.53 convicted that we should really be wise about using, uh, 00:19:13.53\00:19:19.76 modern medical methods that are available to us. 00:19:19.76\00:19:21.63 That having been said, natural remedies? 00:19:21.63\00:19:24.86 NN: Turmeric, for instance, for breast cancer. 00:19:24.86\00:19:28.33 Significant improvement when combined, uh, with chemotherapy, 00:19:28.33\00:19:33.60 versus chemotherapy with no turmeric on board. 00:19:33.60\00:19:37.10 Turmeric not only can help with breast cancer, it can help with 00:19:37.10\00:19:40.26 melanoma, it can help with other forms of cancer, 00:19:40.26\00:19:43.90 even pancreatic cancer. 00:19:43.90\00:19:45.76 Uh, feverfew, uh, which is a plant, 00:19:45.76\00:19:48.60 uh, that's derived a chemical called [parthenolide] 00:19:48.60\00:19:51.33 has been shown to be actually more effective than the best 00:19:51.33\00:19:54.23 effective drug for acute myelocytic leukemia. 00:19:54.23\00:19:58.16 Resveratrol in combination with other treatments has been show 00:19:58.16\00:20:02.16 to help with pancreatic cancer. 00:20:02.16\00:20:04.63 Uh. 00:20:04.63\00:20:06.10 JB: And we get resveratrol from? 00:20:06.10\00:20:07.66 NN: From red grapes. 00:20:07.66\00:20:09.06 Then there's, um, pomegranate juice 00:20:09.06\00:20:12.10 for prostate cancer, actually decreases the doubling 00:20:12.10\00:20:16.56 time of prostate cancer significantly. 00:20:16.56\00:20:19.26 These are all peer-reviewed scientific literature. 00:20:19.26\00:20:22.23 You could log onto our web site and actually see the references 00:20:22.23\00:20:25.56 and the peer-reviewed, uh, research. 00:20:25.56\00:20:27.86 Here's kind of the, the frustration that I have as 00:20:27.86\00:20:30.43 far as our medical society is concerned, if you don't offer a 00:20:30.43\00:20:34.83 patient chemotherapy, um, you can be committing malpractice. 00:20:34.83\00:20:39.50 But if you don't tell them about pomegranate juice 00:20:39.50\00:20:43.00 in prostate cancer, it's not seen as malpractice. 00:20:43.00\00:20:45.16 JB: Right. 00:20:45.16\00:20:46.63 NN: Uh, and it, it's because of the bias that we have in the 00:20:46.63\00:20:49.70 pharmaceutical industry that is so strong a lobby group, uh, and 00:20:49.70\00:20:55.40 there isn't any lobby group for pomegranates, for instance, 00:20:55.40\00:20:59.10 because they don't cost anything, there's no patent on 00:20:59.10\00:21:01.83 it and that sort of thing. 00:21:01.83\00:21:03.63 So, unless your doctor is informed about peer-review 00:21:03.63\00:21:06.76 research, you may never find out about that. 00:21:06.76\00:21:08.90 And so that's why it's important for you to also talk to someone 00:21:08.90\00:21:12.73 who's familiar with the peer-review research in cancer, 00:21:12.73\00:21:16.40 because it's a combined approach that's going to improve your 00:21:16.40\00:21:19.23 odds of survival. 00:21:19.23\00:21:20.40 JB: That's what I say. 00:21:20.40\00:21:21.13 You want to do your homework. 00:21:21.13\00:21:22.60 But let's talk about prayer. 00:21:22.60\00:21:24.10 NN: Um-hum. 00:21:24.10\00:21:25.50 JB: I've spoken to people who've had cancer and they said, 00:21:25.50\00:21:28.16 there's nothing like this cancer to kick start or readjust my 00:21:28.16\00:21:33.10 relationship with God. 00:21:33.10\00:21:33.73 When you're, when you're confronting your own mortality, 00:21:33.73\00:21:36.46 it makes you really think about these things. 00:21:36.46\00:21:38.86 NN: There have been studies on SRC. 00:21:38.86\00:21:41.50 SRC is the enigma of the cancer researchers, it's called 00:21:41.50\00:21:46.63 Spontaneous Regression of Cancer. 00:21:46.63\00:21:49.46 JB: Yeah. 00:21:49.46\00:21:50.36 NN: And these are people that did nothing, but then they came 00:21:50.36\00:21:52.83 back expecting to die, told they were given a death sentence, and 00:21:52.83\00:21:56.30 six months later they're not dead, they're actually feeling 00:21:56.30\00:21:58.63 pretty good, and they come back and have their scans and the 00:21:58.63\00:22:01.60 cancer is all gone. 00:22:01.60\00:22:03.40 There's been over 140 cases now described in the medical 00:22:03.40\00:22:06.40 literature of SRC, and every one of those cases involved prayer. 00:22:06.40\00:22:13.96 But it wasn't a prayer for a cure, 00:22:13.96\00:22:17.26 interestingly enough. 00:22:17.26\00:22:18.56 Doctor Dawsey has demonstrated this. 00:22:18.56\00:22:20.50 We have it in our book "Proof Positive." 00:22:20.50\00:22:22.20 We, we show all the research on this. 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.76 It was actually a prayer placing the individual into the will, 00:22:24.76\00:22:29.40 into the hands of God. 00:22:29.40\00:22:31.20 And that person was committed to doing God's will in their life, 00:22:31.20\00:22:35.30 thinking that they were going to die. 00:22:35.30\00:22:37.06 But they just wanted to do his will during the remaining few 00:22:37.06\00:22:40.40 weeks of their life. 00:22:40.40\00:22:42.63 And in some instances, you can't explain it any other way, 00:22:42.63\00:22:46.46 the Lord was the one who was the Great Physician 00:22:46.46\00:22:49.60 and touched them. 00:22:49.60\00:22:50.73 JB: You know, I've said this to people many times and then when 00:22:50.73\00:22:53.90 I was dealing with cancer, I, I, uh, way up 00:22:53.90\00:22:58.40 with what I was saying meant anything or nothing. 00:22:58.40\00:23:01.26 There are worse things than being sick. 00:23:01.26\00:23:03.43 There are worse things than a terminal illness. 00:23:03.43\00:23:05.86 Because when we think about this in the light of eternity, 00:23:05.86\00:23:09.00 whatever we go through on this earth, 00:23:09.00\00:23:11.26 that's one thing, but the point is 00:23:11.26\00:23:13.23 we want to get out of this earth and into the world to come. 00:23:13.23\00:23:16.60 NN: That's right. 00:23:16.60\00:23:17.23 JB: So, really, I say this with a great deal of respect, 00:23:17.23\00:23:21.10 whether we live or die, that's not 00:23:21.10\00:23:24.16 really the important question because we're all 00:23:24.16\00:23:25.60 going to die anyhow. 00:23:25.60\00:23:27.16 What's important is what happens next. 00:23:27.16\00:23:29.33 NN: That's right. 00:23:29.33\00:23:30.50 JB: And even if a person has a cancer that isn't going to be 00:23:30.50\00:23:32.86 cured, it's what happens next that's important. 00:23:32.86\00:23:37.06 When your eyes open again, will you see Jesus? 00:23:37.06\00:23:40.26 Will there be a place for you in God's eternal kingdom? 00:23:40.26\00:23:42.90 And that's where there is hope for everybody. 00:23:42.90\00:23:45.46 NN: Yeah. 00:23:45.46\00:23:46.43 The Book of James says that if we pray according to God's will, 00:23:46.43\00:23:49.90 he will raise up the sick. 00:23:49.90\00:23:52.26 Now, it doesn't tell us the time that that will occur. 00:23:52.26\00:23:54.76 JB: That's right. 00:23:54.76\00:23:55.90 NN: But, uh, we know that, uh, if you are in the Lord's hands 00:23:55.90\00:24:00.70 and you do die, you're going to be healed in the resurrection. 00:24:00.70\00:24:03.53 There's going to be no cancer in heaven. 00:24:03.53\00:24:05.63 And so maybe it's the Lord's will that 00:24:05.63\00:24:07.60 you're not healed until then. 00:24:07.60\00:24:08.96 JB: And we want to encourage you with that today. 00:24:08.96\00:24:10.86 You know, there's a lot you can do to 00:24:10.86\00:24:12.10 strengthen your immune system, stay away from certain things, 00:24:12.10\00:24:15.76 be sure you're getting the right antioxidants. 00:24:15.76\00:24:20.86 Ah, and then what? 00:24:20.86\00:24:22.00 Well, then you trust the Lord. 00:24:22.00\00:24:24.23 Maybe somebody with cancer is going to have radiation 00:24:24.23\00:24:26.26 or chemotherapy or not. 00:24:26.26\00:24:28.10 Maybe you're going to drink some carrot juice 00:24:28.10\00:24:29.93 or do something different. 00:24:29.93\00:24:31.60 But there's hope. 00:24:31.60\00:24:32.26 There's real hope for healing, thank God. 00:24:32.26\00:24:35.70 And ultimately there's the guarantee of ultimate healing, 00:24:35.70\00:24:40.80 because one day Jesus will come back, he'll take us to a place 00:24:40.80\00:24:43.36 the Bible says the inhabitant of that place will not say, 00:24:43.36\00:24:46.50 I am sick. 00:24:46.50\00:24:47.56 God will wipe away all tears from their eyes, 00:24:47.56\00:24:49.73 there'll be no more death, neither sorrow, 00:24:49.73\00:24:52.76 nor crying, neither will there be any pain 00:24:52.76\00:24:55.10 because the former things are passed away. 00:24:55.10\00:24:58.36 But if you're facing in your personal experience, 00:24:58.36\00:25:00.53 in your family, with a friend, 00:25:00.53\00:25:02.93 I want you to know today, thank God there is hope. 00:25:02.93\00:25:08.23 ?
