[Dramatic] ? 00:00:00.63\00:00:04.93 >: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:06.86\00:00:10.96 God's book, the Bible. 00:00:12.03\00:00:14.80 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:16.73\00:00:21.63 It Is Written. 00:00:22.06\00:00:25.06 Sharing hope around the globe. 00:00:25.06\00:00:29.36 John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.10 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:39.10\00:00:39.90 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.23 There are certain phrases that are always going to be 00:00:42.23\00:00:46.36 memorable. 00:00:46.36\00:00:47.56 One of them might be, "It's a boy." 00:00:47.56\00:00:50.56 Another one might be, "Congratulations, 00:00:50.56\00:00:53.93 you are the lucky winner." 00:00:53.93\00:00:55.76 Another memorable phrase that far too many people 00:00:55.76\00:00:59.43 have heard, a phrase that's memorable for all the wrong 00:00:59.43\00:01:02.56 reasons is, "I regret to inform you that it's cancer." 00:01:02.56\00:01:09.40 The Bible says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:01:09.40\00:01:11.40 In the beginning God created. 00:01:11.40\00:01:13.50 He didn't create us to get cancer. 00:01:13.50\00:01:15.46 He created us to live long and well. 00:01:15.46\00:01:17.20 Jesus came to give us life more abundantly. 00:01:17.20\00:01:20.80 Cancer is an ever present challenge in this world, 00:01:20.80\00:01:23.63 it is often deadly. 00:01:23.63\00:01:26.86 My guest today, Dr. Neil Nedley, the president of 00:01:26.86\00:01:30.36 Nedley Health Solutions. 00:01:30.36\00:01:31.10 Dr. Nedley, thanks for joining me today. 00:01:31.10\00:01:32.83 Neil Nedley: Thank you. 00:01:32.83\00:01:34.16 Great to be here. 00:01:34.16\00:01:35.53 JB: What's cancer? 00:01:35.53\00:01:36.56 NN: Cancer is an abnormal cell that grows out of control. 00:01:36.56\00:01:41.96 JB: How does it get that way? 00:01:41.96\00:01:43.10 Do we know? 00:01:43.10\00:01:44.03 NN: Yes. 00:01:44.03\00:01:45.06 I mean, there has to be a change in the genetic material 00:01:45.06\00:01:50.80 in the cell. 00:01:50.80\00:01:52.46 And that change in the genetic material can then produce a 00:01:52.46\00:01:55.63 cancerous cell and as long as that cell can reproduce, 00:01:55.63\00:01:59.23 it can grow out of control and spread to vital organs. 00:01:59.23\00:02:02.10 JB: Okay. 00:02:02.10\00:02:02.73 Out of control cells. 00:02:02.73\00:02:03.43 NN: Out of control cell. 00:02:03.43\00:02:05.23 JB: And describe to me what happens. 00:02:05.23\00:02:06.53 The out of control cells spread to, let's pick on the pancreas, 00:02:06.53\00:02:12.06 pancreatic cancer is a really dangerous cancer. 00:02:12.06\00:02:14.13 NN: It is, yeah. 00:02:14.13\00:02:15.00 JB: So, what happens? 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.33 You've got a pancreas. 00:02:16.33\00:02:18.66 A cancer cell lodges there. 00:02:18.66\00:02:21.13 NN: Um-hum. 00:02:21.13\00:02:22.56 JB: Very frequently somebody dies. 00:02:22.56\00:02:24.43 What happened between there and there? 00:02:24.43\00:02:26.90 What did the cancer do? 00:02:26.90\00:02:28.23 What actually happens with cancer? 00:02:28.23\00:02:29.76 Whether it's the lung or some other place. 00:02:29.76\00:02:32.03 NN: Well, it eventually spreads to vital organs that will take 00:02:32.03\00:02:35.20 your life. 00:02:35.20\00:02:36.56 JB: Those abnormal cells somehow inhibit the function of that 00:02:36.56\00:02:40.90 organ. 00:02:40.90\00:02:41.76 NN: Correct. 00:02:41.76\00:02:42.70 JB: Okay. 00:02:42.70\00:02:43.23 NN: Yeah. 00:02:43.23\00:02:44.40 JB: How big a problem is cancer in the United States? 00:02:44.40\00:02:46.83 NN: One out of every two men will get it at some point in 00:02:46.83\00:02:49.46 their life. 00:02:49.46\00:02:51.23 One out of every three women will get it at some point in 00:02:51.23\00:02:54.10 their life. 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.90 And one out of every four deaths in this country is from cancer. 00:02:55.90\00:03:00.63 It's the number one cause of death in people under the age of 00:03:00.63\00:03:02.86 85. 00:03:02.86\00:03:04.46 And it kills people of all ages. 00:03:04.46\00:03:06.66 A lot of people are not aware that the pediatric population, 00:03:06.66\00:03:10.73 second leading cause of death in children is cancer. 00:03:10.73\00:03:15.16 Ah, and so it affects people of all ages, it's not, you know, 00:03:15.16\00:03:19.90 age specific. 00:03:19.90\00:03:22.20 Ah, and it needs to be eliminated. 00:03:22.20\00:03:26.23 JB: Babies can have cancer. 00:03:26.23\00:03:28.86 NN: They can. 00:03:28.86\00:03:29.73 JB: Now, they do anything to deserve, I don't mean deserve, 00:03:29.73\00:03:32.23 to earn that or to deserve that, so cancer can strike 00:03:32.23\00:03:37.83 indiscriminately. 00:03:37.83\00:03:39.70 NN: It can. 00:03:39.70\00:03:40.43 JB: But at the same time, what we know is that much lung cancer 00:03:40.43\00:03:44.96 is attributable to smoking. 00:03:44.96\00:03:47.16 NN: Correct. 00:03:47.16\00:03:47.70 JB: We know that much bowel and colon cancer is attributable to 00:03:47.70\00:03:50.96 diet. 00:03:50.96\00:03:51.96 NN: Correct. 00:03:51.96\00:03:52.63 JB: So there are ways that cancer can be, I'll just use the 00:03:52.63\00:03:57.26 word avoided. 00:03:57.26\00:03:59.16 NN: Um-hum. 00:03:59.16\00:03:59.80 Even in the pediatric population, an infant getting 00:03:59.80\00:04:02.40 cancer for instance, or a two- or three-year-old, that's often 00:04:02.40\00:04:07.36 due to a genetic mutation that occurred in the sperm of the 00:04:07.36\00:04:11.86 father as a result of his bad diet. 00:04:11.86\00:04:16.10 And so, at the time of conception. 00:04:16.10\00:04:18.93 And so a lot of these pediatric cancers actually can be traced 00:04:18.93\00:04:22.66 back to the habits of parents. 00:04:22.66\00:04:26.10 And so that's something to keep in mind. 00:04:26.10\00:04:27.66 They did nothing wrong, but mutations can be passed along to 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.73 children that the parents themselves don't have by a poor 00:04:31.73\00:04:35.76 lifestyle. 00:04:35.76\00:04:36.83 JB: Can I ask you, what age group is most susceptible to 00:04:36.83\00:04:44.13 getting cancer? 00:04:44.13\00:04:46.03 NN: Well, the older we get the more susceptible we are. 00:04:46.03\00:04:49.56 So, in general, age, and part of that is, there's a greater 00:04:49.56\00:04:54.66 chance that our nucleus and the genetic material are going to be 00:04:54.66\00:04:58.33 changed by given enough time and given enough, you know, 00:04:58.33\00:05:03.23 lifestyle circumstances to help produce this. 00:05:03.23\00:05:06.80 JB: Okay, so you're 15 years old, 20, 25, 30, 35, you're 00:05:06.80\00:05:11.63 healthy, and Grandpa just died of cancer and he was 79. 00:05:11.63\00:05:19.86 And you're saying to yourself, I want to be 79 and well, 00:05:19.86\00:05:24.43 what should a person be doing to do their very best to 00:05:24.43\00:05:30.26 avoid cancer later in life? 00:05:30.26\00:05:33.70 What are things you can do? 00:05:33.70\00:05:34.66 NN: Well, there's two primary mechanisms preventing cancer. 00:05:34.66\00:05:39.80 One is by avoiding carcinogens and, two, is boosting and 00:05:39.80\00:05:45.46 maintaining the immune system. 00:05:45.46\00:05:47.20 JB: Okay. 00:05:47.20\00:05:47.80 A carcinogen is a cancer causing agent, correct? 00:05:47.80\00:05:49.96 NN: That's right. 00:05:49.96\00:05:50.60 JB: Okay, what are some carcinogens? 00:05:50.60\00:05:52.90 NN: Well, you mentioned one, tobacco smoke is a big one. 00:05:52.90\00:05:56.83 Thirty percent of all cancers in our country are caused by 00:05:56.83\00:06:01.30 tobacco. 00:06:01.30\00:06:02.46 JB: That's a lot. 00:06:02.46\00:06:03.33 NN: That's a lot. 00:06:03.33\00:06:04.63 So, that's a huge, huge number. 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.13 Alcohol is actually a carcinogen. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.70 A lot of people don't realize it, but the American Cancer 00:06:09.70\00:06:12.33 Society recommends zero alcohol. 00:06:12.33\00:06:15.50 Alcohol increases your risk of breast cancer significantly, of 00:06:15.50\00:06:19.56 colorectal cancer, of cancer of the liver, the larynx, 00:06:19.56\00:06:24.10 even the esophagus. 00:06:24.10\00:06:26.66 And so, thousands of deaths are caused in this country every 00:06:26.66\00:06:30.83 year simply due to alcohol causing a cancer or 00:06:30.83\00:06:36.80 significantly increasing a risk. 00:06:36.80\00:06:39.83 And that's something that the media doesn't broadcast. 00:06:39.83\00:06:43.16 You know, one of the things I know and that's why it's so nice 00:06:43.16\00:06:45.86 to be on a program like It Is Written that's willing to, 00:06:45.86\00:06:48.86 to tell all of the truth and the whole story. 00:06:48.86\00:06:52.00 But, you know, on the typical evening news show, the only time 00:06:52.00\00:06:55.63 you'll hear about alcohol is when it's shown to reduce the 00:06:55.63\00:06:59.20 risk of heart disease. 00:06:59.20\00:07:00.43 JB: Right. 00:07:00.43\00:07:01.40 NN: And it is true that if you drink enough alcohol to get 00:07:01.40\00:07:05.33 cirrhosis of the liver, you will only have a 25% chance of dying 00:07:05.33\00:07:09.73 of heart disease compared to the general population. 00:07:09.73\00:07:12.80 But you'll have many fold increased risk of dying, if you 00:07:12.80\00:07:16.26 don't die of the cirrhosis if you drink that much alcohol, 00:07:16.26\00:07:19.06 you're going to die of cancer pretty soon anyways. 00:07:19.06\00:07:22.13 And not only just cancer of the liver, but there may be other 00:07:22.13\00:07:24.90 cancers that come about. 00:07:24.90\00:07:27.10 So, so those are two big ones right there, alcohol 00:07:27.10\00:07:30.43 and tobacco. 00:07:30.43\00:07:31.60 But there's others as well. 00:07:31.60\00:07:32.76 JB: Let's talk about some of the others. 00:07:32.76\00:07:34.26 Alcohol and tobacco I've often mentioned to people. 00:07:34.26\00:07:39.43 Imagine a world without tobacco and somebody turned up in, 00:07:39.43\00:07:44.36 I don't know, Congress or the World Fair, 00:07:44.36\00:07:47.46 I don't care and said, look, I have this great product. 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.40 You'll enjoy it, it'll give you a rush, it'll give you a buzz, 00:07:50.40\00:07:53.16 you'll think you're cool, however, however, 00:07:53.16\00:07:57.16 it'll cause cancer, it'll stink, it'll cost you money, 00:07:57.16\00:08:01.00 it'll be antisocial, folks will die in their droves, 00:08:01.00\00:08:06.10 the product would never be allowed to make it to the 00:08:06.10\00:08:08.36 market. 00:08:08.36\00:08:09.50 NN: That's true. 00:08:09.50\00:08:10.10 JB: Yet today, here we are. 00:08:10.10\00:08:10.90 Same with alcohol. 00:08:10.90\00:08:12.90 These things are just a scourge. 00:08:12.90\00:08:14.33 I mean, no offense intended to those who are hooked or who use 00:08:14.33\00:08:17.13 this, but, my goodness. 00:08:17.13\00:08:18.76 They're a societal ill. 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.93 NN: Yeah, absolutely. 00:08:20.93\00:08:22.06 JB: The less the better. 00:08:22.06\00:08:23.40 NN: Yeah. 00:08:23.40\00:08:24.03 JB: But there are probably other carcinogens as well. 00:08:24.03\00:08:26.70 What might some others be? 00:08:26.70\00:08:27.66 NN: Well, one of them is benzopyrene. 00:08:27.66\00:08:30.50 That's produced by charcoal broiling meat. 00:08:30.50\00:08:34.73 And if you charcoal broil meat, the amount of benzopyrene 00:08:34.73\00:08:37.73 produced is the equivalent to what comes from 600 cigarettes 00:08:37.73\00:08:41.36 smoked, increase the risk of leukemia, increases the risk of 00:08:41.36\00:08:45.63 stomach cancer. 00:08:45.63\00:08:48.40 And often people overlook that. 00:08:48.40\00:08:49.70 In the South, you know, charcoal broiling is a major thing and 00:08:49.70\00:08:54.33 they're producing carcinogens in the process. 00:08:54.33\00:08:56.76 JB: Let me ask you this question. 00:08:56.76\00:08:59.86 This is one chunk of charcoal broiled meat has the same effect 00:08:59.86\00:09:05.36 as, or the same amount as 600ó NN: Six hundred cigarettes, 00:09:05.36\00:09:07.93 yeah. 00:09:07.93\00:09:08.96 JB: Now, is this known? 00:09:08.96\00:09:11.83 Or only people like you know this? 00:09:11.83\00:09:15.93 NN: Well, it should be more widely known, that's why we're 00:09:15.93\00:09:18.06 educating people on the media here today. 00:09:18.06\00:09:20.46 JB: Where did you, where did you find this statistic? 00:09:20.46\00:09:22.50 Did you have to dig under a rock to find this? 00:09:22.50\00:09:24.80 Or is this relatively accessible information? 00:09:24.80\00:09:28.23 NN: No, it's accessible information. 00:09:28.23\00:09:29.83 Yeah. 00:09:29.83\00:09:30.60 JB: But it's not being shouted from the rooftops. 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.86 NN: It isn't and that's part of the sad things in our society 00:09:32.86\00:09:35.36 today. 00:09:35.36\00:09:36.16 Some things are politically incorrect to shout from the 00:09:36.16\00:09:39.30 rooftops because they might affect someone's business or 00:09:39.30\00:09:44.86 someone's taste buds, but in reality we should be much more 00:09:44.86\00:09:48.76 interested in their health. 00:09:48.76\00:09:50.26 JB: Particularly in a country that's grappling unsuccessfully 00:09:50.26\00:09:54.36 with a healthcare crisis. 00:09:54.36\00:09:56.06 NN: Exactly. 00:09:56.06\00:09:56.86 JB: Now, the fact is, too, that there are many people who just 00:09:56.86\00:10:02.16 get cancer out of the blue, even though they've lived healthy 00:10:02.16\00:10:05.20 lives, that's true. 00:10:05.20\00:10:06.46 We'll talk about that and more to do with this. 00:10:06.46\00:10:09.36 The Big C. 00:10:09.36\00:10:10.56 Cancer is so dreaded, it's often simply referred to by a 00:10:10.56\00:10:14.66 euphemism and some people won't even say the word, because it's 00:10:14.66\00:10:18.76 such a dreadful thing. 00:10:18.76\00:10:21.70 However, there is hope, hope for somebody with cancer of course, 00:10:21.70\00:10:26.33 and there's hope for people who don't have cancer that they need 00:10:26.33\00:10:30.33 never get it, if you make some simple lifestyle changes and 00:10:30.33\00:10:34.16 live the life that God desires for you to live. 00:10:34.16\00:10:37.10 We'll have more in just a moment. 00:10:37.10\00:10:39.76 >: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, It is written, 00:10:41.60\00:10:45.06 Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:10:45.06\00:10:47.00 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:10:47.00\00:10:51.06 "Every Word" is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:10:51.06\00:10:54.40 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially 00:10:54.40\00:10:57.66 for busy people like you. 00:10:57.66\00:10:59.30 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks or watch it 00:10:59.30\00:11:02.93 online every day on our web site, itiswritten.com. 00:11:02.93\00:11:06.96 Receive a daily spiritual boost, watch "Every Word." 00:11:06.96\00:11:10.23 You'll be glad you did. 00:11:10.23\00:11:11.83 Here's a sample. 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.66 ? [rythmic melody] ? 00:11:15.40\00:11:18.76 JB: I had to smile when I read that a group was claiming 00:11:22.53\00:11:24.70 Peter didn't really walk on water, but that the water had 00:11:24.70\00:11:27.16 turned to ice and that Peter had actually walked on ice. 00:11:27.16\00:11:31.23 Now, here's what Matthew 14:29 says: "And when Peter was come 00:11:31.23\00:11:34.53 down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus." 00:11:34.53\00:11:38.26 Now, humanly speaking, you can't walk on water. 00:11:38.26\00:11:40.60 But Peter really did because it was really a miracle. 00:11:40.60\00:11:44.10 We serve a great God who created the world out of nothing and can 00:11:44.10\00:11:47.70 still work miracles today. 00:11:47.70\00:11:49.80 I hope you choose to believe today in the God of the 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.70 miraculous. 00:11:51.70\00:11:53.20 If God is bound by our human explanations then he's a very 00:11:53.20\00:11:56.80 small God. 00:11:56.80\00:11:58.46 I'm glad we serve a big God who's still able to do the 00:11:58.46\00:12:01.63 miraculous today. 00:12:01.63\00:12:03.26 Today trust a God who's able to do big things. 00:12:03.26\00:12:08.76 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:12:08.76\00:12:10.60 Let's live today by every word. 00:12:10.60\00:12:13.46 JB: This is It Is Written, I'm John Bradshaw. 00:12:15.76\00:12:17.86 Thanks for joining me today. 00:12:17.86\00:12:19.36 My guest today is Dr. Neil Nedley, the president of 00:12:19.36\00:12:21.83 Nedley Health Solutions. 00:12:21.83\00:12:23.23 Dr. Nedley, really we're looking at a health solution today. 00:12:23.23\00:12:26.26 NN: Yes. 00:12:26.26\00:12:26.90 JB: We're discussing what many people call the Big C, cancer, 00:12:26.90\00:12:29.96 a dreadful disease. 00:12:29.96\00:12:31.83 You mentioned earlier, one in two men will develop cancer 00:12:31.83\00:12:34.90 sometime in their lives. 00:12:34.90\00:12:35.83 Didn't you say one in three women? 00:12:35.83\00:12:38.73 NN: One in three women. 00:12:38.73\00:12:39.40 JB: That's a gigantic amount. 00:12:39.40\00:12:40.00 NN: Yes. 00:12:40.00\00:12:40.96 JB: Do you feel that many people just think it's an 00:12:40.96\00:12:42.83 inevitability? 00:12:42.83\00:12:43.90 NN: Oh, yes. 00:12:43.90\00:12:44.96 Most people think that they just have to wait and hope that they 00:12:44.96\00:12:48.26 don't get it. 00:12:48.26\00:12:49.56 But they don't really realize there's things that they can do 00:12:49.56\00:12:52.10 now to, to lower that risk. 00:12:52.10\00:12:54.76 JB: What do we know about statistics or experiences or 00:12:54.76\00:12:58.43 something that show these lifestyle choices actually make 00:12:58.43\00:13:03.86 a difference? 00:13:03.86\00:13:04.50 NN: Well, Harvard states that 80, up to 80% of cancers are 00:13:04.50\00:13:08.13 actually preventable through lifestyle change. 00:13:08.13\00:13:12.30 JB: That's Harvard? 00:13:12.30\00:13:13.00 NN: And so, that's right, and so we know that we can make a 00:13:13.00\00:13:16.90 difference if we're really doing everything right in, in 80% of 00:13:16.90\00:13:21.90 cases and that's a pretty significant number. 00:13:21.90\00:13:25.10 JB: That really is. 00:13:25.10\00:13:25.83 NN: But it is true that there's another 20% that we don't know 00:13:25.83\00:13:29.30 how to prevent at this point in time. 00:13:29.30\00:13:31.13 That we may learn more as we study this more and find out 00:13:31.13\00:13:35.83 that we might be able to prevent 90%, but right now the most we 00:13:35.83\00:13:39.00 can prevent is 80% of cancer. 00:13:39.00\00:13:41.10 JB: That's a pretty good number. 00:13:41.10\00:13:42.20 NN: That's hundreds of thousands of deaths spared per year. 00:13:42.20\00:13:45.90 But we're talking of hundreds of thousands of deaths per year 00:13:45.90\00:13:50.50 that could be spared if people would, A, become educated about 00:13:50.50\00:13:56.16 how they can prevent it, and, B, utilize their God-given power of 00:13:56.16\00:14:00.90 self-control to change their lifestyle accordingly. 00:14:00.90\00:14:04.23 JB: Are there other carcinogens that are somewhat prominent or 00:14:04.23\00:14:09.33 prevalent that we could avoid somehow? 00:14:09.33\00:14:11.03 NN: There's a number of cancers that come about as a result of 00:14:11.03\00:14:16.43 eating meat in particular. 00:14:16.43\00:14:19.03 Colon cancer, for instance. 00:14:19.03\00:14:20.93 Harvard showed that if you eat meat every day you have a 142% 00:14:20.93\00:14:25.70 increased risk of developing that. 00:14:25.70\00:14:28.13 If you eat meat five or six times a, a week, you lower that 00:14:28.13\00:14:33.66 risk to 84% increased risk. 00:14:33.66\00:14:36.76 If you're two to four times a week, you're down to 50%. 00:14:36.76\00:14:41.06 But even if you eat it one time a month, your risk is 30% higher 00:14:41.06\00:14:46.46 compared with someone who doesn't eat it at all. 00:14:46.46\00:14:49.06 So, their conclusion was, the more meat, the higher the risk 00:14:49.06\00:14:52.46 of cancer, and the more frequently it's consumed, 00:14:52.46\00:14:55.90 the higher the risk. 00:14:55.90\00:14:57.10 But they also concluded that there's no safe level per se. 00:14:57.10\00:15:02.26 So, in other words, as you eliminate it, your risk goes 00:15:02.26\00:15:05.23 down significantly, and it's not just colon cancer. 00:15:05.23\00:15:08.63 We now know a number of other cancers are associated with meat 00:15:08.63\00:15:13.20 intake. 00:15:13.20\00:15:14.40 JB: That's a pretty simple change. 00:15:14.40\00:15:17.03 NN: Pretty simple change. 00:15:17.03\00:15:18.13 Just being a vegetarian one or two days a week, you go from 00:15:18.13\00:15:20.80 140% down to 80%. 00:15:20.80\00:15:23.56 So you can spare yourself a decreased risk of 60% right 00:15:23.56\00:15:28.06 there by being a vegetarian one or two days a week. 00:15:28.06\00:15:30.83 And if you can do it one or two days a week, and that's good, 00:15:30.83\00:15:33.70 then stretch it out to maybe three or four and keep moving. 00:15:33.70\00:15:36.80 JB: Do we know anything about exercise and 00:15:36.80\00:15:39.36 lowering your cancer risk? 00:15:39.36\00:15:40.86 NN: Yes, we do. 00:15:40.86\00:15:42.16 Exercise does lower the cancer risk. 00:15:42.16\00:15:44.63 Actually, it does that by boosting your immune system, and 00:15:44.63\00:15:50.00 so that way if you have a tiptop immune system, hopefully your 00:15:50.00\00:15:53.26 cancer cell will be recognized as a, a foreign cell and be 00:15:53.26\00:15:59.10 destroyed by your immune system. 00:15:59.10\00:16:01.13 And exercise seems to help in several ways. 00:16:01.13\00:16:03.93 JB: Let's drill down here on, on this aspect of it, because, 00:16:03.93\00:16:06.90 first thing, recognizing and avoiding carcinogens. 00:16:06.90\00:16:11.00 I was going to say to you, perhaps that second thing would 00:16:11.00\00:16:13.33 be building your immune system. 00:16:13.33\00:16:15.00 NN: Correct. 00:16:15.00\00:16:15.40 Yes. 00:16:15.40\00:16:16.50 JB: So, exercise is one of those ways. 00:16:16.50\00:16:18.30 There must be a plethora of things we can do to strengthen 00:16:18.30\00:16:23.46 our immune system. 00:16:23.46\00:16:24.60 NN: There are. 00:16:24.60\00:16:25.33 JB: What are some of those things. 00:16:25.33\00:16:26.56 NN: Well, diet is one of the ways. 00:16:26.56\00:16:28.76 There's, there's wonderful dietary changes that can help 00:16:28.76\00:16:31.90 boost your immune system. 00:16:31.90\00:16:33.36 JB: Okay. 00:16:33.36\00:16:33.93 What are some of the things that people might want to, 00:16:33.93\00:16:35.93 let's just say eat, to help the immune system. 00:16:35.93\00:16:38.66 NN: Eating foods high in what we call carotenoid. 00:16:38.66\00:16:42.70 JB: Okay. 00:16:42.70\00:16:43.26 I'm going to encourage somebody, if you've got a moment and you 00:16:43.26\00:16:46.06 can find a pen or something, make a list here of, I'm going 00:16:46.06\00:16:49.60 to go to the store and make sure I buy some of these things. 00:16:49.60\00:16:52.46 I'm going to add these to my diet. 00:16:52.46\00:16:54.36 It's not hard. 00:16:54.36\00:16:55.40 No one's going to ask you to jump through hoops here. 00:16:55.40\00:16:57.66 This won't be difficult. 00:16:57.66\00:16:58.76 NN: That's right. 00:16:58.76\00:16:59.26 JB: Foods that are high in carotenoids. 00:16:59.26\00:17:01.36 NN: Yeah. 00:17:01.36\00:17:01.86 Carotenoids, in fact, studies have shown that even if you're a 00:17:01.86\00:17:05.63 smoker, if you're on a high carotinoid diet you'll only have 00:17:05.63\00:17:09.43 one-third the risk of developing smoking related cancers. 00:17:09.43\00:17:13.26 JB: That's magnificent. 00:17:13.26\00:17:14.53 Foods high in carotenoids. 00:17:14.53\00:17:17.83 Okay, what are those foods? 00:17:17.83\00:17:19.13 This is life and death. 00:17:19.13\00:17:20.36 So, what are those foods. 00:17:20.36\00:17:21.16 NN: Yes, yes. 00:17:21.16\00:17:22.53 They're going to be your vitamin A foods. 00:17:22.53\00:17:25.13 Most of them are going to have a yellow or orange hue, 00:17:25.13\00:17:29.36 vegetables, for instance. 00:17:29.36\00:17:30.56 JB: Squash? 00:17:30.56\00:17:31.40 NN: Squash is loaded. 00:17:31.40\00:17:32.63 Orange yams. 00:17:32.63\00:17:34.43 JB: Sweet potatoes? 00:17:34.43\00:17:35.60 NN: Yeah, the sweet potatoes are loaded with carotenoids. 00:17:35.60\00:17:38.43 JB: So, eating by colors, really? 00:17:38.43\00:17:40.60 NN: Yeah. 00:17:40.60\00:17:41.33 JB: Go to the supermarket and buy the yellow and the orange 00:17:41.33\00:17:43.13 stuff. 00:17:43.13\00:17:43.73 NN: Yeah. 00:17:43.73\00:17:44.30 Apricots. 00:17:44.30\00:17:45.23 JB: Carrots? 00:17:45.23\00:17:46.03 NN: Carrots, yup. 00:17:46.03\00:17:46.93 Carrots would be a good source of carotenoids. 00:17:46.93\00:17:49.13 I think that's where carotenoids got its name from. 00:17:49.13\00:17:52.33 JB: Yeah, I'm wondering about that. 00:17:52.33\00:17:55.13 NN: Yeah, it's from that, that nice orange vegetable there. 00:17:55.13\00:17:56.80 And actually cooked carrots have more carotenoids 00:17:56.80\00:17:58.60 than raw carrots. 00:17:58.60\00:18:00.26 JB: No kidding. 00:18:00.26\00:18:00.73 Usually they tell us that raw is the way, the way to go. 00:18:00.73\00:18:03.30 NN: Well, raw will give you more vitamin C, because cooking will 00:18:03.30\00:18:07.70 destroy about half the vitamin C, but actually it gives you a 00:18:07.70\00:18:10.50 little more of some nutrients like carotenoids. 00:18:10.50\00:18:12.86 JB: That's okay then. 00:18:12.86\00:18:13.50 That's all right. 00:18:13.50\00:18:15.23 So, foods with carotenoids in them, consumed, 00:18:15.23\00:18:20.40 will boost the immune system. 00:18:20.40\00:18:22.36 NN: Um-hum. 00:18:22.36\00:18:22.96 One of those carotenoids is called lycopene. 00:18:22.96\00:18:25.40 Lycopene is what makes tomatoes red and strawberries red. 00:18:25.40\00:18:30.30 And studies show those with the highest levels of lycopene in 00:18:30.30\00:18:34.10 their blood stream have the lowest rates of pancreatic 00:18:34.10\00:18:36.66 cancer in the world. 00:18:36.66\00:18:39.13 So, that's an, an interesting finding as well. 00:18:39.13\00:18:42.13 JB: That is. 00:18:42.13\00:18:43.03 NN: And it's much better to get your lycopene from your fruits 00:18:43.03\00:18:45.36 and vegetables than trying to buy lycopene in a bottle. 00:18:45.36\00:18:48.86 JB: So, so tomatoes. 00:18:48.86\00:18:51.46 Or what some would refer to as tomatoes. 00:18:51.46\00:18:53.36 I think there's probably more lycopene in a tomato than a 00:18:53.36\00:18:55.56 tomato, but that's just me. 00:18:55.56\00:18:58.96 That's good for you in terms of fighting cancer. 00:18:58.96\00:19:01.53 NN: Yes. 00:19:01.53\00:19:02.23 Yes, absolutely. 00:19:02.23\00:19:03.03 JB: Fantastic. 00:19:03.03\00:19:03.53 What else can a person do? 00:19:03.53\00:19:05.63 This is so significant. 00:19:05.63\00:19:07.23 What we're learning is that you aren't doomed to get cancer. 00:19:07.23\00:19:10.53 NN: That's right. 00:19:10.53\00:19:11.13 That's right. 00:19:11.13\00:19:11.70 JB: This is something that you can avoid. 00:19:11.70\00:19:13.46 You quoted 80% of cancers can be avoided. 00:19:13.46\00:19:17.33 That's magnificent. 00:19:17.33\00:19:19.03 NN: Up to. 00:19:19.03\00:19:19.73 JB: Okay. 00:19:19.73\00:19:20.63 Carotenoids. 00:19:20.63\00:19:21.33 What else enhances the immune system? 00:19:21.33\00:19:23.73 NN: Vitamin C foods will enhance it as well. 00:19:23.73\00:19:27.33 Vitamin C, if you're getting more than 250 milligrams a day 00:19:27.33\00:19:31.90 in your diet, it protects your sperm if you're a male from 00:19:31.90\00:19:37.00 genetic damage, so that you won't have the risk of 00:19:37.00\00:19:41.46 actually passing cancer along to your offspring. 00:19:41.46\00:19:45.40 And so, 250 milligrams a day will do that. 00:19:45.40\00:19:48.80 Now, the RDA is 60 or 90 milligrams, and so you need a 00:19:48.80\00:19:53.20 little bit more, but it's easy to get 250 milligrams a day if 00:19:53.20\00:19:56.60 you're eating foods that are rich in vitamin C. 00:19:56.60\00:19:59.40 JB: The best way to get plenty of vitamin C is? 00:19:59.40\00:20:02.00 NN: They're raw fruits and vegetables. 00:20:02.00\00:20:04.00 So, even raw broccoli has 40 milligrams per serving. 00:20:04.00\00:20:08.20 An orange will have 60 milligrams. 00:20:08.20\00:20:11.30 JB: Kiwi fruit? 00:20:11.30\00:20:12.23 NN: Kiwi is even more yet in vitamin C. 00:20:12.23\00:20:16.33 And then some of your highest sources are strawberries. 00:20:16.33\00:20:19.63 You know, you can get, you know, 140 milligrams from 00:20:19.63\00:20:22.53 strawberries. 00:20:22.53\00:20:23.43 Red bell peppers are also good sources of vitamin C. 00:20:23.43\00:20:26.13 Raw red bell peppers. 00:20:26.13\00:20:27.36 JB: This is fun. 00:20:27.36\00:20:28.06 I mean, these are foods people like. 00:20:28.06\00:20:29.46 NN: Yeah. 00:20:29.46\00:20:29.93 JB: Strawberries, kiwi fruit, I mean, what's not to like 00:20:29.93\00:20:32.66 about that? 00:20:32.66\00:20:33.50 NN: Exactly. 00:20:33.50\00:20:34.30 JB: Okay. 00:20:34.30\00:20:34.83 Well that's good. 00:20:34.83\00:20:35.50 NN: And your citrus as well. 00:20:35.50\00:20:36.50 JB: Yeah. 00:20:36.50\00:20:37.00 Well, that's an enjoyable way. 00:20:37.00\00:20:37.80 Are there other things? 00:20:37.80\00:20:38.60 We've mentioned vitamin C and the carotenoids, lycopene. 00:20:38.60\00:20:44.50 What else? 00:20:44.50\00:20:45.03 NN: Vitamin E. 00:20:45.03\00:20:46.20 JB: What's that in? 00:20:46.20\00:20:47.70 NN: Vitamin E is going to be in more of your plant fat 00:20:47.70\00:20:52.60 substances. 00:20:52.60\00:20:53.10 Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin. 00:20:53.10\00:20:55.33 So, almonds, high in vitamin E. 00:20:55.33\00:20:58.33 JB: What if I roast those almonds? 00:20:58.33\00:21:00.80 Is it still high in vitamin E? 00:21:00.80\00:21:01.90 NN: It's still high in vitamin E. 00:21:01.90\00:21:03.26 JB: All right. 00:21:03.26\00:21:03.96 NN: Yeah, you don't destroy vitamin E by cooking. 00:21:03.96\00:21:05.70 JB: Almond butter, still vitamin E? 00:21:05.70\00:21:07.50 NN: Yup. 00:21:07.50\00:21:08.16 Yup. 00:21:08.16\00:21:08.66 JB: Awesome. 00:21:08.66\00:21:09.26 NN: Yup. 00:21:09.26\00:21:09.73 Good source. 00:21:09.73\00:21:10.66 And vitamin E can also, there's evidence that it can help 00:21:10.66\00:21:14.16 prevent skin cancer as well, in adequate amounts, as long as 00:21:14.16\00:21:20.36 we're also getting adequate amounts of A and C. 00:21:20.36\00:21:23.36 Often we talk about A, C, and E together as having a more 00:21:23.36\00:21:26.86 augmented effect in helping to potentially prevent certain 00:21:26.86\00:21:30.80 cancers. 00:21:30.80\00:21:31.96 JB: One of the best things we can do for our health is wear a 00:21:31.96\00:21:34.96 hat. 00:21:34.96\00:21:35.96 NN: Yes. 00:21:35.96\00:21:36.96 And of course there, what they're doing is getting 00:21:36.96\00:21:38.46 radiation from the sun that's actually changing the genetic 00:21:38.46\00:21:41.46 material. 00:21:41.46\00:21:42.60 JB: Right. 00:21:42.60\00:21:43.03 NN: In your cells. 00:21:43.03\00:21:43.56 First it starts out with a sunburn and then as that genetic 00:21:43.56\00:21:47.23 material continues to multiply over time, it actually can turn 00:21:47.23\00:21:50.73 into a cancer. 00:21:50.73\00:21:51.70 JB: So, if you've had cancer, and I have, and it's not a lot 00:21:51.70\00:21:55.43 of fun, and in my case particularly the cure not 00:21:55.43\00:21:59.33 especially enjoyable, however, the cure for the cancer of sin, 00:21:59.33\00:22:06.70 no negative side effects. 00:22:06.70\00:22:08.43 NN: That's right. 00:22:08.43\00:22:09.30 JB: A very positive journey. 00:22:09.30\00:22:10.90 NN: Yes. 00:22:10.90\00:22:12.20 JB: And that is faith in Jesus Christ. 00:22:12.20\00:22:14.56 NN: Yes. 00:22:14.56\00:22:15.13 JB: You know, with cancer, when you're looking to get out of 00:22:15.13\00:22:16.73 cancer, people are thinking typically, chemotherapy, which 00:22:16.73\00:22:20.53 can be brutal, radiation, which can be really brutal, but if you 00:22:20.53\00:22:26.93 want to get over the side effects of sin, you come to 00:22:26.93\00:22:32.16 Jesus Christ through faith. 00:22:32.16\00:22:33.60 And, by the way, I don't scare anybody. 00:22:33.60\00:22:34.76 Chemo and radiation can in certain circumstances be 00:22:34.76\00:22:38.20 somewhat moderate to experience, depending on the chemo and the 00:22:38.20\00:22:42.00 radiation. 00:22:42.00\00:22:43.73 But what God asks us to do if we have sin, can face our sins and 00:22:43.73\00:22:49.23 through faith in Jesus Christ believe we are forgiven. 00:22:49.23\00:22:53.10 And we're not just forgiven, but we're cleansed, and that disease 00:22:53.10\00:22:56.33 of sin, you know, one day it'll be eradicated. 00:22:56.33\00:23:00.56 Thank God. 00:23:00.56\00:23:01.46 Cancer and all physical diseases will be eradicated as well. 00:23:01.46\00:23:05.63 But we're looking forward to an eternity without sin. 00:23:05.63\00:23:09.33 NN: Exactly. 00:23:09.33\00:23:09.80 JB: Thankfully we can look forward, no way, we can 00:23:09.80\00:23:12.50 experience a present without sin as well if we come to Christ and 00:23:12.50\00:23:18.06 accept Jesus and then, and then get the Word of God in us. 00:23:18.06\00:23:22.73 David said something phenomenal in Psalm 119 when he said, 00:23:22.73\00:23:28.20 "Thy word have I hidden my heart that I might not 00:23:28.20\00:23:30.46 sin against you." 00:23:30.46\00:23:32.90 So, the Bible, the Word of God, Christ in us, actually possesses 00:23:32.90\00:23:37.23 the capacity to keep us from going back into sin. 00:23:37.23\00:23:41.23 NN: It's boosting the spiritual immune system. 00:23:41.23\00:23:43.23 JB: Yes, exactly right. 00:23:43.23\00:23:44.30 NN: And then we also want to avoid spiritual carcinogens as 00:23:44.30\00:23:47.36 well. 00:23:47.36\00:23:48.53 JB: That's right. 00:23:48.53\00:23:49.16 NN: So that we don't get the, the cancer of sin. 00:23:49.16\00:23:51.36 JB: And they're everywhere. 00:23:51.36\00:23:52.36 NN: Yes. 00:23:52.36\00:23:53.83 JB: I want you to know though that as prevalent as sin seems 00:23:53.83\00:23:56.90 to be, as powerful as the enemy of souls seems to be, 1 John 4, 00:23:56.90\00:24:01.83 in verse 4, promises you: "Greater is he that is in you, 00:24:01.83\00:24:07.60 than he that is in the world." 00:24:07.60\00:24:10.13 Now, you've learned enough today that you can go from this point 00:24:10.13\00:24:12.96 on looking hopefully into the future and say, if I implement 00:24:12.96\00:24:17.13 some changes here, if they're needed, then perhaps I don't 00:24:17.13\00:24:21.06 have to encounter the Big C down the line. 00:24:21.06\00:24:23.83 It's no guarantee, it's no guarantee, 00:24:23.83\00:24:26.20 but you can improve your odds. 00:24:26.20\00:24:27.93 I tell you what is a guarantee and that is when you accept 00:24:27.93\00:24:30.66 Jesus Christ into your heart by faith, you are guaranteed 00:24:30.66\00:24:35.16 to be cleansed of sin. 00:24:35.16\00:24:36.86 You need not live with it in your life and you can look 00:24:36.86\00:24:40.86 forward to a future that is sin free and filled with the 00:24:40.86\00:24:45.73 presence of Christ. 00:24:45.73\00:24:47.83 ?
