Two and a half million 00:01:29.22\00:01:31.49 on the side of the Union, 1.2 million on the side 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.09 of the Confederacy. It was a massive, massive war. 00:01:35.09\00:01:40.76 And what took place right here in Gettysburg, was the turning 00:01:40.76\00:01:45.60 point for the entire American Civil War. 00:01:45.60\00:01:48.57 Academics and historians have been discussing the Battle 00:01:48.57\00:01:52.34 of Gettysburg and the Civil War since both of them were ended. 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.08 But what took place here at Gettysburg goes way beyond 00:01:55.08\00:01:59.55 academics and history. The truth is there are some 00:01:59.55\00:02:03.62 very imptant spiritual lessons that can be learned 00:02:03.62\00:02:06.69 here, lessons that help us understand the great spiritual 00:02:06.69\00:02:11.99 battle that all of us are involved in. 00:02:11.99\00:02:15.56 This patch of earth right here is known as Cemetery Ridge. 00:02:15.56\00:02:21.07 Cemetery Ridge was the site of a very, 00:02:21.07\00:02:24.34 very significant battle. It was known as 00:02:24.34\00:02:27.08 Pickett's Charge. Gettysburg was the high 00:02:27.08\00:02:30.48 watermark for the Confederacy. This was the furthest into 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.25 Union Territory that the Confederacy ever got. 00:02:33.25\00:02:36.08 You look at a map, we're well north here of Washington, DC. 00:02:36.08\00:02:39.92 In fact, the Battle of Gettysburg was the only battle 00:02:39.92\00:02:42.62 that took place north of the Mason-Dixon line. 00:02:42.62\00:02:46.63 Pickets Charge occurred on the last day of the Battle 00:02:46.63\00:02:50.13 of Gettysburg. It was July 3, 1863. 00:02:50.13\00:02:55.74 Major General George Pickett was one of three Confederate 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.91 generals who lead the assault. General Robert E. Lee 00:02:58.91\00:03:02.48 ordered the attack against Major General George G. Meade's 00:03:02.48\00:03:05.48 Union position along this ridge. 00:03:05.48\00:03:08.35 General Lee was determined to take down the Union Army, 00:03:08.35\00:03:12.42 especially after attacks on both of their flanks had failed 00:03:12.42\00:03:15.29 in the previous days. But the Union soldiers 00:03:15.29\00:03:18.59 were ready. Thousands of Union soldiers 00:03:18.59\00:03:23.16 aimed 122 cannon or cannons into that field right there. 00:03:23.16\00:03:29.40 The Confederacy matched them with 152 cannon of their own. 00:03:29.40\00:03:33.94 At 1:00 PM, the fighting began. Those 274 cannon began 00:03:33.94\00:03:39.88 firing simultaneously. It is said that the resulting 00:03:39.88\00:03:44.95 cacophony was so loud that the noise could be heard 84 miles 00:03:44.95\00:03:49.12 away in Washington DC. Someone once said that this 00:03:49.12\00:03:52.29 was most likely the loudest manmade noise ever made 00:03:52.29\00:03:57.03 in the history of the world up to that time. 00:03:57.03\00:04:00.67 Pickett's Charge is only the beginning. 00:04:00.67\00:04:04.57 [Music] [Sound of firing, war, cries, 00:04:04.57\00:04:08.71 battle, men fighting] Once the Confederates who 00:04:08.71\00:04:12.21 were out there thought that the Union lines back here had 00:04:12.21\00:04:16.05 been softened up, 12 and a half thousand of their 00:04:16.05\00:04:19.42 soldiers began to march across that open space 00:04:19.42\00:04:22.69 from there to here. It's a stretch of one mile. 00:04:22.69\00:04:27.30 Yet, they were only able to make it three quarters of the 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.26 way before they had to head back. 00:04:29.26\00:04:31.90 They walked across this open space right into a blizzard 00:04:31.90\00:04:35.74 of heavy cannon fire. In fact, in three quarters of 00:04:35.74\00:04:39.54 an hour the Confederacy lost more than 50% of their men. 00:04:39.54\00:04:44.21 Some of the Confederates were able to breach this low 00:04:44.21\00:04:46.45 stonewall that shielded the Union defenders, 00:04:46.45\00:04:48.85 but they were not able to maintain their position 00:04:48.85\00:04:50.89 and they were forced to retreat. 00:04:50.89\00:04:54.49 Years later when he was asked why his charge at Gettysburg 00:04:54.49\00:04:57.26 failed, General Pickett replied by saying, "I've always 00:04:57.26\00:05:02.76 thought the Yankees had something to do with it." 00:05:02.76\00:05:06.33 There are many debates as to why this battle here actually 00:05:06.33\00:05:08.60 even took place at all. Some say the objective was to 00:05:08.60\00:05:11.61 gain control of the copse of trees over there behind me. 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.68 Or others say the objective was to get to Ziegler's grove 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.28 over there on Cemetery Hill. Perhaps we will never know. 00:05:18.28\00:05:21.88 Other questions are asked as well, questions such as 00:05:21.88\00:05:26.09 "Why did the Civil war itself even take place?" 00:05:26.09\00:05:29.69 Was it a question of state's rights? 00:05:29.69\00:05:32.06 Was it about federal tariffs? Was it labor laws and slavery? 00:05:32.06\00:05:35.56 Maybe we'll never know. Even the name "Civil War" has 00:05:35.56\00:05:40.14 been questioned and disputed down through the years. 00:05:40.14\00:05:42.90 I've got a question for you. Whose side was God on 00:05:42.90\00:05:47.81 in the Civil War? The Bible does help us 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.78 understand that and the answer may surprise you. 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.08 And what about the original civil war that took place long 00:05:54.08\00:05:57.52 before Gettysburg was even thought of. 00:05:57.52\00:05:59.59 We'll talk about that in just a mome 00:05:59.59\00:06:03.49 In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, It is written, 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.80 man shall not live by bread alone but by every word 00:06:09.80\00:06:13.30 that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:06:13.30\00:06:16.40 Every Word is a one-minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:06:16.40\00:06:20.44 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 00:06:20.44\00:06:23.41 especially for busy people like you. 00:06:23.41\00:06:26.01 Look for Every Word on selected networks or watch it 00:06:26.01\00:06:30.49 on-line everyday on our website, itiswritten.com. 00:06:30.49\00:06:33.05 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.49 Watch Every Word, you'll be glad you did. 00:06:35.49\00:06:41.00 Here's a sample. [Gunshot] 00:09:05.41\00:09:11.15 [Marching drum music] The American Civil War. 00:09:11.15\00:09:14.42 North against the South. I'm in Gettysburg, 00:09:14.42\00:09:17.52 Pennsylvania, the sight of the Battle of Gettysburg during 00:09:17.52\00:09:21.36 the American Civil War and I'm here right now, 00:09:21.36\00:09:24.33 in a place that is known as Devil's Den. 00:09:24.33\00:09:28.30 It saw a lot of action on July 2, 1863. 00:09:28.30\00:09:31.73 It changed hands a couple of times but by the end of the 00:09:31.73\00:09:33.94 day, it was a Confederate stronghold. 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.17 A lot of people died here. Just over there is an area 00:09:36.17\00:09:41.91 that is known as the slaughter pen. 00:09:41.91\00:09:44.88 I will leave it to you to figure out why it was called 00:09:44.88\00:09:47.88 the Slaughter Pen. More than 700,000 soldiers 00:09:47.88\00:09:53.05 died during the American Civil War. 00:09:53.05\00:09:56.19 American had more casualties, lost more soldiers in that one 00:09:56.19\00:09:59.49 great conflict than in all wars from the Revolutionary 00:09:59.49\00:10:04.97 War to the Vietnam War combined. 00:10:04.97\00:10:08.50 The reason is quite obvious. That's because during the 00:10:08.50\00:10:12.27 American Civil War, everybody who died was an American. 00:10:12.27\00:10:16.24 And you know, with so much bloodshed, people have asked 00:10:16.24\00:10:21.05 from time to time, whose side was God on? 00:10:21.05\00:10:25.72 Now don't worry. I'm not going to get into any 00:10:25.72\00:10:27.72 sticky, political territory. Instead, I am going to get 00:10:27.72\00:10:31.13 into the Bible. This reminds me of a Bible 00:10:31.13\00:10:33.90 story you read about in the book of Joshua. 00:10:33.90\00:10:36.67 God's people had been brought out of the wilderness and into 00:10:36.67\00:10:41.04 the promised land, finally, after 40 years of wondering. 00:10:41.04\00:10:44.77 But now that they had come to the Promised Land, they find 00:10:44.77\00:10:46.81 that the Promised Land is filled with the enemy. 00:10:46.81\00:10:49.51 So, God commands them to consecrate themselves and he 00:10:49.51\00:10:53.68 leads them down to the walls of the city of Jericho and as 00:10:53.68\00:10:57.35 they are marching down to the walls surrounding the city of 00:10:57.35\00:11:00.49 Jericho, something really strange takes place. 00:11:00.49\00:11:04.96 Joshua 5:13, And it came to pass, when Joshua was by 00:11:04.96\00:11:08.96 Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked and behold 00:11:08.96\00:11:14.24 a man stood opposite him with a sword drawn in his hand 00:11:14.24\00:11:18.71 and Joshua went to him and said to him, 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.94 'Are you for our adversaries?'" Now think about this. 00:11:20.94\00:11:27.18 Joshua was very close to God and just a couple of chapters 00:11:27.18\00:11:30.49 before this took place, God had said this to Joshua. 00:11:30.49\00:11:34.02 This day, I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, 00:11:34.02\00:11:38.43 that they may know that as I was with Moses, 00:11:38.43\00:11:41.56 so I am with you. Now, Joshua likely knew that 00:11:41.56\00:11:45.57 the Being in the road was a divine Being. 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.40 Joshua was well acquainted with God. 00:11:48.40\00:11:51.17 You know that Joshua was with the Israelites when they left 00:11:51.17\00:11:53.84 Egypt on their way to the Promised Land. 00:11:53.84\00:11:56.21 Joshua had wandered through the wilderness for four decades 00:11:56.21\00:11:59.85 with the children of Israel and he had seen God work. 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.92 Think about what he saw. He was a witness when God sent 00:12:02.92\00:12:06.45 the 10 plagues in Egypt. He saw what God did there. 00:12:06.45\00:12:10.29 He was there when God split the red sea wide open 00:12:10.29\00:12:12.96 so the Israelites could evacuate Egypt. 00:12:12.96\00:12:15.26 Joshua saw what God had done. While on the wilderness 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.87 wanderings, Joshua ate the Manna that God 00:12:19.87\00:12:22.24 had sent, the Manna that carpeted the ground. 00:12:22.24\00:12:24.64 Joshua gathered it up with his bare hands and ate it himself, 00:12:24.64\00:12:28.14 knowing that this blessing had come from God. 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.85 He saw the pillar of fire by night and the pillar 00:12:30.85\00:12:33.35 of cloud by day. He was acquainted with God. 00:12:33.35\00:12:37.25 He says to this being, "whose side are you on? 00:12:37.25\00:12:40.52 Are you with us or are you with our enemy? 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.99 And he got a very surprising answer. 00:12:42.99\00:12:46.43 I mean, I would expect that a divine being, a heavenly 00:12:46.43\00:12:50.37 being, would say plainly and simply, "I'm on your side. 00:12:50.37\00:12:54.97 I'm with the children of Israel." 00:12:54.97\00:12:57.01 You certainly would not expect them to say, "I'm with your 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.84 enemies." What did God say? 00:12:59.84\00:13:02.44 Did God say, "Joshua, I'm with you. You're my man 00:13:02.44\00:13:05.71 and I'm with you and my people. 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.58 God didn't say that at all. Here's what God said. 00:13:09.75\00:13:13.46 God said neither. I'm with neither of you. 00:13:13.46\00:13:17.83 Here's what the Bible says. Joshua 5:14. 00:13:17.83\00:13:21.66 "Neither, he replied. But as commander of the Army 00:13:21.66\00:13:24.87 of the Lord I have now come." Then Joshua fell face down to 00:13:24.87\00:13:29.00 the ground in reverence and asked him "what message does 00:13:29.00\00:13:32.57 my Lord have for his servant?" Now this is Joshua we're 00:13:32.57\00:13:36.64 talking about, the one who was chosen by God 00:13:36.64\00:13:39.31 to lead God's people. If God was going to be on 00:13:39.31\00:13:42.05 anybody's side at all, you'd think that he would 00:13:42.05\00:13:44.12 be on Joshua's side. So what was going on here? 00:13:44.12\00:13:46.79 Had Joshua done something wrong? 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.82 Had God's people slidden into apostasy again? 00:13:48.82\00:13:51.93 Well no, as a matter of fact, they had recently reconsecrated 00:13:51.93\00:13:54.93 themselves to God and they built an altar. 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.67 You've got to look at the big picture. 00:13:57.67\00:13:59.63 There's a big picture to view when considering this passage. 00:13:59.63\00:14:02.30 A couple of things to consider, and one of them is this. 00:14:02.30\00:14:05.64 God is on his own side. God is committed to His mission 00:14:05.64\00:14:11.38 of saving all men and women redeeming the world 00:14:11.38\00:14:15.02 and bringing them to himself through Jesus. 00:14:15.02\00:14:17.92 That's what God is all about. John 3:16 says, For God 00:14:17.92\00:14:22.26 so loved the world that he gave his only Begotten Son, 00:14:22.26\00:14:25.23 that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have 00:14:25.23\00:14:28.80 everlasting life. And it says in Ephesians 00:14:28.80\00:14:31.53 1:11, 12, In him also we have obtained an inheritance, 00:14:31.53\00:14:36.54 being predestined according to the purpose of him 00:14:36.54\00:14:39.71 who works all things according to the counsel 00:14:39.71\00:14:41.91 of his will, that we who first trusted in Christ 00:14:41.91\00:14:46.11 should be to the praise of his glory. 00:14:46.11\00:14:48.88 Abraham Lincoln recognized this and that's why he included 00:14:48.88\00:14:51.95 these words in his writings: "In meditations on 00:14:51.95\00:14:55.62 the divine will, the will of God prevails. 00:14:55.62\00:15:00.46 In great contests, each party claims to act in accordance 00:15:00.46\00:15:04.23 with the will of God. Both may be and one 00:15:04.23\00:15:07.84 must be wrong. God cannot be for and against 00:15:07.84\00:15:12.27 the same thing at the same time. 00:15:12.27\00:15:14.68 In the present Civil War, it is quite possible that God's 00:15:14.68\00:15:17.61 purpose is somewhat different from the purpose of either 00:15:17.61\00:15:20.22 party and yet the human instrumentality is working 00:15:20.22\00:15:23.85 just as they do, are of the best adaptation to affect us." 00:15:23.85\00:15:28.12 He want to say it at the second inaugural address. 00:15:28.12\00:15:30.56 "Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God. 00:15:30.56\00:15:34.13 And each invokes his aid against the other. 00:15:34.13\00:15:37.37 It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just 00:15:37.37\00:15:41.10 God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of 00:15:41.10\00:15:44.31 other men's faces. But let us judge not that we 00:15:44.31\00:15:47.84 be not judged. The prayers of both could not 00:15:47.84\00:15:50.75 be answered, that of neither has been answered fully. 00:15:50.75\00:15:54.88 The Almighty has his own purposes. 00:15:54.88\00:15:57.35 Woe unto the world because of offenses, for it must needs 00:15:57.35\00:16:00.72 be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom 00:16:00.72\00:16:04.19 the offense commeth." That isn't to suggest that God 00:16:04.19\00:16:07.30 was indifferent to the Battle of Gettysburg .... 00:16:07.30\00:16:10.40 Far from it. God is always on the side of 00:16:10.40\00:16:12.33 truth and justice and liberty. God is on the side of lifting 00:16:12.33\00:16:15.87 men and women up, of ennobling people, and giving them 00:16:15.87\00:16:18.91 the opportunity to live whole lives. 00:16:18.91\00:16:22.01 But whereas we see the small picture, Gettysburg, Bullrun, 00:16:22.01\00:16:26.55 Manases, God sees the big picture. 00:16:26.55\00:16:30.55 And it's when we look beyond Gettysburg and we see 00:16:30.55\00:16:34.16 the big picture that we see the war behind all wars. 00:16:34.16\00:16:38.26 We see the original civil war. We see the universal battle 00:16:38.26\00:16:43.16 that all of us are involved in. I'll be back with more 00:16:43.16\00:16:46.20 in just a moment. It's an almost sacred place, 00:18:57.10\00:19:01.14 the sight of the Battle of Gettysburg. 00:19:01.14\00:19:04.04 During the Battle of Gettysburg, both the Union 00:19:04.04\00:19:05.97 side and the Confederate side suffered about the same amount 00:19:05.97\00:19:08.14 of casualties. About 23000 per side. 00:19:08.14\00:19:12.15 And there were 3000 deaths suffered by the Union ... 00:19:12.15\00:19:16.18 a little more than 3000, and a little less than 5000 deaths 00:19:16.18\00:19:18.92 suffered by the Confederacy. The Civil War often even split 00:19:18.92\00:19:24.19 families, split communities. It was not uncommon to have 00:19:24.19\00:19:27.56 a brother on one side, be it Union or Confederate, fighting 00:19:27.56\00:19:31.43 against his own literal blood brother on the other side. 00:19:31.43\00:19:35.74 Before he became the president, Abraham Lincoln described 00:19:35.74\00:19:38.84 the United States as a house divided, using words that came 00:19:38.84\00:19:43.01 straight from the lips of Jesus, words Lincoln 00:19:43.01\00:19:45.65 borrowed from the Gospels. Abraham Lincoln understood 00:19:45.65\00:19:49.48 this concept from first-hand experience. 00:19:49.48\00:19:52.92 His own brother-in-law was a Confederate General who lost 00:19:52.92\00:19:57.13 his life shortly after Gettysburg at the battle 00:19:57.13\00:20:00.10 of Chickamauga just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee. 00:20:00.10\00:20:04.93 What about a conflict that not only divided communities or 00:20:04.93\00:20:09.47 divided a nation, but what about a conflict that would 00:20:09.47\00:20:12.41 divide heaven. It seems hard to imagine, 00:20:12.41\00:20:15.54 doesn't it? But doesn't it also seem hard 00:20:15.54\00:20:17.95 to imagine, thinking back, Americans taking up arms 00:20:17.95\00:20:22.52 against Americans and fighting to the death? 00:20:22.52\00:20:25.49 Just seems so unlikely. Even the leaders, many of them 00:20:25.49\00:20:28.76 on the Confederate side, the Union side, 00:20:28.76\00:20:30.83 some of them were friends, many of them were educated 00:20:30.83\00:20:33.36 together at the same military schools. 00:20:33.36\00:20:36.06 Seems hard to fathom now. But just as hard to fathom 00:20:36.06\00:20:40.87 as that is is this concept of a war that divides heaven, 00:20:40.87\00:20:44.61 a conflict that divides haven. And here is what the Bible 00:20:44.61\00:20:47.31 says about that in Revelation 12, from verse 7. 00:20:47.31\00:20:50.98 It says, "And there was war in heaven. 00:20:50.98\00:20:53.85 Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the 00:20:53.85\00:20:56.58 dragon fought, and his angels, and prevailed not, neither 00:20:56.58\00:21:00.22 was their place found anymore in heaven. 00:21:00.22\00:21:03.49 There was a conflict so dramatic that a third of the 00:21:03.49\00:21:07.66 angels were evicted from heaven and why in the world 00:21:07.66\00:21:12.07 would that take place? Well, to find out that, 00:21:12.07\00:21:15.37 we look in the book of Isaiah and Chapter 14. 00:21:15.37\00:21:20.01 "How are you fallen from heaven, oh Lucifer, 00:21:20.01\00:21:22.41 son of the morning? How are you cut down to the 00:21:22.41\00:21:25.08 ground, you who weakened the nations, for you have said in 00:21:25.08\00:21:29.28 your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. 00:21:29.28\00:21:32.49 I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. 00:21:32.49\00:21:36.32 I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the 00:21:36.32\00:21:38.99 farthest sides of the north. I will ascend above the 00:21:38.99\00:21:43.00 heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High." 00:21:43.00\00:21:49.77 For reasons that I don't think we can adequately comprehend, 00:21:49.77\00:21:53.61 Satan decided that he wanted to sit in God's place. 00:21:53.61\00:21:56.61 Actually, Lucifer, before he was Satan, had these 00:21:56.61\00:21:59.61 ideas that he would sit in God's place. 00:21:59.61\00:22:02.32 He wanted to receive the honor that only God was due. 00:22:02.32\00:22:05.62 He wanted to receive the homage that God was getting. 00:22:05.62\00:22:09.12 Simply put, Satan wanted to receive worship. 00:22:09.12\00:22:13.80 He wasn't able to get that worship in heaven and so he was 00:22:13.80\00:22:16.80 cast down here to the earth. But before he was cast down 00:22:16.80\00:22:19.60 to the earth, Satan went on a campaign in heaven like a good 00:22:19.60\00:22:23.87 politician to win the angels of heaven, as many as he 00:22:23.87\00:22:27.91 could, over to his side. Now, there are times that 00:22:27.91\00:22:32.55 it really makes me wonder why even a single angel would 00:22:32.55\00:22:36.42 have entertained Lucifer's Chicanery 00:22:36.42\00:22:40.69 Lucifer had to be campaigning and complaining about God. 00:22:40.69\00:22:44.03 Why would even one perfect angel in heaven listen? 00:22:44.03\00:22:46.70 It just doesn't even make sense. 00:22:46.70\00:22:49.50 But perhaps...perhaps there was something mysterious 00:22:49.50\00:22:51.47 about sin, something that wasn't very well 00:22:51.47\00:22:54.80 understood that caused the angels to stop 00:22:54.80\00:22:57.94 and consider and listen and give Lucifer 00:22:57.94\00:23:00.41 a little more of their time than they otherwise would have. 00:23:00.41\00:23:03.24 And perhaps, think about this, perhaps Lucifer was just 00:23:03.24\00:23:06.15 a good campaigner. Perhaps he knew how to speak 00:23:06.15\00:23:09.25 and phrase and frame things in such a way that certain 00:23:09.25\00:23:12.12 of the angels said .... "well, maybe 00:23:12.12\00:23:15.02 he's got a point." I mean, let's think about this. 00:23:15.02\00:23:17.89 We think of Nazi Germany. There were multiplied thousands 00:23:17.89\00:23:21.76 of Germans who listened to Adolf Hitler 00:23:21.76\00:23:24.23 with wrapped attention. They were swept along in 00:23:24.23\00:23:27.17 the hysteria that he generated. We say, "how in the world 00:23:27.17\00:23:30.67 could that have happened?" But many people living today 00:23:30.67\00:23:32.64 look back and say, "I understand only too well how 00:23:32.64\00:23:35.01 that could have happened." Perhaps it was a little bit 00:23:35.01\00:23:37.21 like that with Satan. Thousands died here 00:23:37.21\00:23:40.45 at Gettysburg ... the many cemeteries mark 00:23:40.45\00:23:44.49 the final resting place of many of them. 00:23:44.49\00:23:47.42 It was in November of 1863 that President Lincoln came 00:23:47.42\00:23:50.46 here to Gettysburg and he delivered at 00:23:50.46\00:23:52.69 the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery 00:23:52.69\00:23:56.33 the Gettysburg Address. Now what's interesting is that 00:23:56.33\00:23:59.67 many people don't realize that Abraham Lincoln wasn't even 00:23:59.67\00:24:02.64 the featured speaker that day. The one who gave the keynote 00:24:02.64\00:24:06.21 speech was a man named Edward Everett. 00:24:06.21\00:24:09.24 Everett had been the Secretary of State for the United States. 00:24:09.24\00:24:11.81 He had been the Governor of the State of Massachusetts. 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.52 Everett had been the President of Harvard University 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.58 and he was a renowned orator. When he spoke that day, 00:24:16.58\00:24:20.29 his speech lasted more than two hours. 00:24:20.29\00:24:24.26 But today, there is virtually nobody who remembers anything 00:24:24.26\00:24:28.16 that Edward Everett said. By contrast, 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.93 Abraham Lincoln spoke. The Gettysburg Address lasted 00:24:31.93\00:24:35.44 just a little more than two minutes and it's made up 00:24:35.44\00:24:39.24 of ten sentences. And it was in the Gettysburg 00:24:39.24\00:24:43.61 Address that Abraham Lincoln said these words .... 00:24:43.61\00:24:48.72 "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great 00:24:48.72\00:24:51.85 task remaining before us. That from these honored dead 00:24:51.85\00:24:56.66 we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave 00:24:56.66\00:25:01.03 the last full measure of devotion." 00:25:01.03\00:25:04.97 In looking forward to the last great conflict soon to come to 00:25:08.57\00:25:11.54 this world, perhaps we can look back and think of those 00:25:11.54\00:25:14.98 who gave everything to advance the cause of Christ, 00:25:14.98\00:25:17.68 the cause of truth, the cause of the Bible. 00:25:17.68\00:25:20.25 Perhaps we can think back to that original rebellion, that 00:25:20.25\00:25:24.52 original Civil War, the one that took place in heaven. 00:25:24.52\00:25:27.59 And we can remember that when the Universe was split in two, 00:25:27.59\00:25:31.93 Jesus did everything he could to bring it back together. 00:25:31.93\00:25:36.20 When Jesus had rebels on his hands, Jesus willingly came to 00:25:36.20\00:25:40.44 the battlefield called earth and gave his life so that 00:25:40.44\00:25:44.34 the rebels might have life. Jesus died for you, friend, so 00:25:44.34\00:25:48.21 that in place of rebellion, you could be 00:25:48.21\00:25:50.41 in harmony with him. In place of guilt, 00:25:50.41\00:25:53.31 you could experience forgiveness. 00:25:53.31\00:25:55.42 In place of shame, you could have no shame. 00:25:55.42\00:25:58.09 In place of tyranny, there would be liberty. 00:25:58.09\00:26:01.46 In place of sin, Jesus would give you salvation. 00:26:01.46\00:26:05.96 Would you accept that from Jesus today? 00:26:05.96\00:26:09.43 Jesus .... Who crossed that vast field 00:26:09.43\00:26:12.70 between heaven and earth and came down here 00:26:12.70\00:26:17.54 and gave his life, dying on the battlefield, so that we need 00:26:17.54\00:26:22.28 not remain on the battlefield, but that we can enjoy 00:26:22.28\00:26:25.48 everlasting life in the presence of Jesus. 00:26:25.48\00:26:28.92 Would you like that friend? Would you choose that and 00:26:28.92\00:26:31.55 accept that today from him? Let me pray for you. 00:26:31.55\00:26:35.46 Our Father in heaven, we thank you today for Jesus, 00:26:35.46\00:26:37.69 the freedom giver. We thank you for Jesus, 00:26:37.69\00:26:40.10 the Liberator. We thank you for Jesus, who 00:26:40.10\00:26:43.30 when he had a group of rebels on his hands, came to this 00:26:43.30\00:26:46.74 earth to give life in the place of death. 00:26:46.74\00:26:49.94 Father, we accept that today. I pray for everyone hearing 00:26:49.94\00:26:54.71 the sound of my voice and saying: Yes, I will choose 00:26:54.71\00:26:57.75 freedom in Jesus.
