[Music] Ellis Island. 00:00:01.40\00:00:06.60 The main port of entry for people coming to America 00:00:06.60\00:00:12.86 between 1890 and 1954. 00:00:12.86\00:00:15.80 Millions of men, women and children entered the United 00:00:15.80\00:00:20.30 States via Ellis Island. 00:00:20.30\00:00:23.66 My wife's great grandmother was one of them, 00:00:23.66\00:00:25.96 arriving here from Norway in 1913, one of so many 00:00:25.96\00:00:30.20 who came seeking a future in this land of promise. 00:00:30.20\00:00:36.86 The island was originally owned by a man named Samuel Ellis. 00:00:36.86\00:00:40.23 For a time, the State of New York leased the island 00:00:40.23\00:00:44.80 and in 1808 it was acquired by the US Government. 00:00:44.80\00:00:51.73 Technically, Ellis Island is located in Jersey City, New 00:00:51.73\00:00:57.33 Jersey, not New York State or New York City. 00:00:57.33\00:01:00.93 But it was through the Port of New York City that most 00:01:00.93\00:01:05.80 immigrants passed. 00:01:05.80\00:01:08.80 [Music] It has stood the test of time, 00:01:13.80\00:01:22.26 God's book, the Bible. 00:01:24.76\00:01:27.96 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:01:30.06\00:01:33.30 It Is Written, 00:01:35.20\00:01:37.00 sharing hope around the globe. 00:01:37.83\00:01:40.56 [Music] 00:01:51.80\00:01:56.23 This is Castle Clinton, it was used as an immigration 00:01:58.06\00:02:01.30 station from 1855 to 1890. 00:02:01.30\00:02:06.90 Eight million people passed through here, 12 million passed 00:02:06.90\00:02:10.40 through Ellis Island and today one-third of the population 00:02:10.40\00:02:13.83 of the United States is descended from 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.20 these immigrants. 00:02:16.20\00:02:19.20 Not everybody who entered the United States via 00:02:21.43\00:02:23.60 the ports of New York City had to go through Ellis Island. 00:02:23.60\00:02:27.93 Ellis Island was reserved largely for those who traveled 00:02:27.93\00:02:30.76 here in the steerage class, or the steerage portion 00:02:30.76\00:02:34.56 of the ship. 00:02:34.56\00:02:35.56 Steerage makes you travel in the very lowest decks 00:02:35.56\00:02:37.93 of the ship and it was by far the cheapest way 00:02:37.93\00:02:40.36 of getting from there to here. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.20 But traveling steerage wasn't for the faint of heart. 00:02:42.20\00:02:46.23 It was difficult. 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.46 The passengers were often exploited or mistreated 00:02:48.46\00:02:51.03 by the crew and the officers. 00:02:51.03\00:02:52.96 It wasn't uncommon for them to sell to the passengers life's 00:02:52.96\00:02:56.43 basic necessities, such as drinking water, and usually 00:02:56.43\00:02:59.40 at exorbitant prices. 00:02:59.40\00:03:01.56 Women were frequently mistreated. 00:03:01.56\00:03:04.33 Sanitation wasn't pretty. 00:03:04.33\00:03:06.43 It wasn't unusual for the passengers 00:03:06.43\00:03:09.60 traveling in the upper decks to throw bread rolls or coins 00:03:09.60\00:03:13.43 down to the poor folks down there in steerage class. 00:03:13.43\00:03:15.53 They weren't doing it out of pity but they were doing it 00:03:15.53\00:03:18.03 out of scorn. 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.90 And then those wealthy patrons were free, in most cases, 00:03:19.90\00:03:23.03 to simply disembark onto American soil 00:03:23.03\00:03:26.70 and here they were, without having to be subject 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.23 to the medical and other screening and processing 00:03:30.23\00:03:32.43 that Ellis Island provided. 00:03:32.43\00:03:34.33 The first full-service immigration inspection station 00:03:34.33\00:03:38.80 on Ellis Island was completed in 1891 and it was opened 00:03:38.80\00:03:42.63 January 1, 1892 to some considerable celebration. 00:03:42.63\00:03:47.13 Three large ships docked at Ellis Island that day and 700 00:03:47.13\00:03:51.26 immigrants were processed. 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.36 In that first year, 450,000 people came through 00:03:53.36\00:03:57.06 Ellis Island. 00:03:57.06\00:03:58.06 Over the next five years, a million and a half more. 00:03:58.06\00:04:01.00 The biggest year in Ellis Island's history in terms 00:04:01.00\00:04:04.00 of immigration numbers was 1907. 00:04:04.00\00:04:06.83 A little over one million people came through Ellis Island 00:04:06.83\00:04:11.33 in that year alone. 00:04:11.33\00:04:13.26 Those who were approved to stay in the United States typically 00:04:13.26\00:04:16.13 spent somewhere between 2 hours and 5 hours at Ellis Island, 00:04:16.13\00:04:20.23 during which time they were asked a total of 29 questions, 00:04:20.23\00:04:23.53 including name, occupation, and how much money 00:04:23.53\00:04:27.46 a person had. 00:04:27.46\00:04:28.46 If you had somewhere around $ 20 or a little over, 00:04:28.46\00:04:31.26 it was considered that you would most likely be able to support 00:04:31.26\00:04:35.66 yourself and you wouldn't become a public charge 00:04:35.66\00:04:38.03 and that was important to the government 00:04:38.03\00:04:40.13 at that time. 00:04:40.13\00:04:41.13 Some people were rejected. 00:04:41.13\00:04:43.10 Some unskilled labors were refused permission to enter 00:04:43.10\00:04:46.93 the United States based on that one issue alone. 00:04:46.93\00:04:50.30 It wasn't uncommon for Ellis Island immigrants to change 00:04:50.30\00:04:54.33 their names upon arriving in the United States. 00:04:54.33\00:04:56.86 Some who didn't change their names when they got here 00:04:56.86\00:04:59.46 changed them a generation or so later. 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.60 The reason was prejudice against non-Anglo immigrants 00:05:01.60\00:05:05.46 into these United States was very real and it continued 00:05:05.46\00:05:08.20 for many decades. 00:05:08.20\00:05:09.83 Most of the major immigrant groups, I'm thinking 00:05:09.83\00:05:12.56 of the Jewish and the Irish and the Polish, the Swedish, 00:05:12.56\00:05:15.10 the Germans, the Italians suffered significant prejudice 00:05:15.10\00:05:18.66 or persecution from those who were here already and considered 00:05:18.66\00:05:22.50 themselves to be the real Americans. 00:05:22.50\00:05:26.00 Two percent of the immigrants didn4t make it in. 00:05:26.00\00:05:29.00 They were turned around and sent home, 00:05:29.00\00:05:31.53 back to their home country and it was usually because 00:05:31.53\00:05:34.36 of a criminal record or insanity or because of disease 00:05:34.36\00:05:38.63 or illness. 00:05:38.63\00:05:39.63 Some people came and then spent time in Ellis Island4s medical 00:05:39.63\00:05:43.13 facilities and hospitals. 00:05:43.13\00:05:44.40 They would recuperate and then be allowed 00:05:44.40\00:05:46.63 into the United States. 00:05:46.63\00:05:48.66 The medical personnel will often mark their patients 00:05:48.66\00:05:51.03 with chalk, indicating what illnesses or diseases the people 00:05:51.03\00:05:55.00 were suffering from but those would-be immigrants wised 00:05:55.00\00:05:57.70 up and realized that chalk could be wiped off or clothes 00:05:57.70\00:06:02.10 could simply be turned inside out, foiling the inspectors 00:06:02.10\00:06:07.76 whose job it was to send those people back home. 00:06:07.76\00:06:13.10 During this time, Ellis Island was known as the place of hope 00:06:13.10\00:06:17.26 and tears. 00:06:17.26\00:06:18.70 Hope because those who were permitted to come ashore 00:06:18.70\00:06:21.93 were about to start a new life in a new land. 00:06:21.93\00:06:25.03 Tears, because sometimes the people were not permitted 00:06:25.03\00:06:28.46 to come ashore and they had to deal with the sadness of being 00:06:28.46\00:06:31.20 turned around and sent home. 00:06:31.20\00:06:33.86 Over there on Ellis Island there is a place known 00:06:33.86\00:06:36.06 as the "Kissing Post" where waiting relatives 00:06:36.06\00:06:39.46 would greet their loved ones who would arrive and were going 00:06:39.46\00:06:42.06 to be staying here in the United States 00:06:42.06\00:06:44.66 and heavy-hearted family and friends would farewell those 00:06:44.66\00:06:49.63 who were not allowed to remain here. 00:06:49.63\00:06:52.86 That had to be tough. 00:06:52.86\00:06:54.73 Ellis Island is a remarkable piece of history. 00:06:54.73\00:06:57.23 It4s a doorway, a portal, an entry point into the greatest 00:06:57.23\00:07:02.00 land of promise this world has ever offered. 00:07:02.00\00:07:05.90 But there's another land of promise, the true land 00:07:05.90\00:07:09.50 of promise, and it is not reached by going 00:07:09.50\00:07:12.33 through Ellis Island. 00:07:12.33\00:07:13.76 It's reached by going through Jesus Christ, the real land 00:07:13.76\00:07:18.86 of promise. 00:07:18.86\00:07:20.23 I'll have more in just a moment. 00:07:20.23\00:07:23.23 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says, "It is written man shall 00:07:24.66\00:07:28.73 not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from 00:07:28.73\00:07:32.80 the mouth of God." 00:07:32.80\00:07:33.80 Every Word is a one-minute Every Word. 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.26 You'll be glad you did. 00:07:53.26\00:07:54.86 Here's a sample. 00:07:54.86\00:07:57.50 According to the Bible, sin begins with temptation. 00:08:06.10\00:08:10.50 Logical enough. 00:08:10.50\00:08:11.46 What's key in our experience isn't so much whether or not 00:08:11.46\00:08:14.16 we're tempted, because temptation is everywhere. 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.70 It's what you do when temptation comes that's really 00:08:16.70\00:08:18.83 important. 00:08:18.83\00:08:19.93 If you're tempted to yell at your spouse or take something 00:08:19.93\00:08:22.00 that isn't yours or say something that isn't true, 00:08:22.00\00:08:24.33 there are moments in that process when you can 00:08:24.33\00:08:26.63 do something that will get you out of that situation. 00:08:26.63\00:08:29.03 Listen to this, it's Psalm 91:15. 00:08:29.03\00:08:34.06 "He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: 00:08:34.06\00:08:36.20 I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, 00:08:36.20\00:08:38.23 and honour him." 00:08:38.23\00:08:38.93 When temptation comes, if you'll call upon God, 00:08:38.93\00:08:42.10 He'll deliver you. 00:08:42.10\00:08:43.06 He promises to. 00:08:43.06\00:08:44.46 Often, though, we don't think to call on God when temptation 00:08:44.46\00:08:46.76 comes. 00:08:46.76\00:08:47.46 But if you do, you'll be happier, and if you do, you'll 00:08:47.46\00:08:51.76 be victorious every time. 00:08:51.76\00:08:53.86 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:08:53.86\00:08:55.63 Let's live today by Every Word. 00:08:55.63\00:08:58.00 This is It Is Written. 00:08:59.40\00:09:00.63 Thanks for joining me today. 00:09:00.63\00:09:01.63 I'm John Bradshaw and I'm in New York City and right over 00:09:01.63\00:09:06.00 there is Ellis Island. 00:09:06.00\00:09:08.66 Now I would have loved to have taken you with me to Ellis 00:09:08.66\00:09:11.20 Island today but I am not allowed to go to Ellis Island 00:09:11.20\00:09:14.90 today because following Hurricane damage, Ellis Island 00:09:14.90\00:09:18.63 is now a "no go area" expected to open 00:09:18.63\00:09:21.56 a little later on. 00:09:21.56\00:09:23.13 But whether you can get there or not and I can tell you this 00:09:23.13\00:09:25.26 from experience because I have been there, Ellis Island 00:09:25.26\00:09:28.06 is a fantastically inspiring place and it just oozes history. 00:09:28.06\00:09:33.26 So many Americans have stories to tell that have their roots 00:09:33.26\00:09:36.63 in Ellis Island. 00:09:36.63\00:09:38.63 Isaac Asimov, born in Russia to parents of Jewish decent 00:09:40.00\00:09:44.36 passed through Ellis Island at the age of three 00:09:44.36\00:09:47.06 with his parents and siblings. 00:09:47.06\00:09:49.06 He did most of his growing up in Brooklyn, New York, 00:09:49.06\00:09:51.60 right across the bay from Ellis Island. 00:09:51.60\00:09:54.06 He taught himself to read when he was five years old 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.36 and then finished high school and college early. 00:09:56.36\00:09:59.93 Asimov went on to become famous as a scientist and writer. 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.93 Like countless others, his story represents the promise 00:10:02.93\00:10:07.26 for which millions cross the Atlantic, seeking both material 00:10:07.26\00:10:11.00 and spiritual freedom. 00:10:11.00\00:10:15.50 Like the stories of countless others, his story represents 00:10:15.50\00:10:18.96 the promise that so many millions crossed the Atlantic 00:10:18.96\00:10:21.70 to find. The promise of spiritual 00:10:21.70\00:10:25.30 and material freedom. 00:10:25.30\00:10:27.86 But of course, not every immigrant story turned out 00:10:27.86\00:10:30.53 quite so well. 00:10:30.53\00:10:31.53 There were those who came here looking for freedom and looking 00:10:31.53\00:10:34.46 for a new start and looking for fortune 00:10:34.46\00:10:36.70 and they didn't find it. 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.03 Some were disappointed, some were disillusioned, 00:10:38.03\00:10:40.50 some ended up bitter. 00:10:40.50\00:10:42.20 The story is told of one man who was told before he came 00:10:42.20\00:10:44.96 here that he would discover that the streets of New York 00:10:44.96\00:10:47.53 City were paved with gold. 00:10:47.53\00:10:49.56 He scoffed when he returned home and said "I found there 00:10:49.56\00:10:53.03 was no gold, no streets and I did most of the paving." 00:10:53.03\00:10:57.53 But most who came to America stayed in America. 00:10:57.53\00:11:01.96 Hope was in the air, a glorious future beckoned. 00:11:01.96\00:11:06.40 Liberty and justice were officially this nation's 00:11:06.40\00:11:08.73 guiding principles. 00:11:08.73\00:11:10.73 New York Governor Alfred E. Smith spoke many years 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.96 ago about God's purpose for the United States 00:11:13.96\00:11:17.96 and he said God made this country to be a haven 00:11:17.96\00:11:20.70 of repose and a harbor of refuge for the poor 00:11:20.70\00:11:24.30 and the down-trodden and the oppressed of every land. 00:11:24.30\00:11:29.36 John Jakes, one of America's most famous historical novelists 00:11:29.36\00:11:32.80 wrote a book some years ago. 00:11:32.80\00:11:33.96 He wrote the story of a young German immigrant who came 00:11:33.96\00:11:37.43 to the United States in the 1890's. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.43 At first he found here much in which he could rejoice, 00:11:39.43\00:11:44.10 but then after a while he himself started to experience 00:11:44.10\00:11:47.10 family disharmony and cruel oppression and racial bigotry. 00:11:47.10\00:11:51.33 In time, he learned to love his new land and its forward 00:11:51.33\00:11:56.06 looking spirit. 00:11:56.06\00:11:57.73 Jakes tells the story in a book entitled Homeland. 00:11:57.73\00:12:02.10 The Bible talks about a Homeland, the true haven 00:12:06.03\00:12:09.30 for the down-trodden, the oppressed, and the poor 00:12:09.30\00:12:12.43 from throughout the world. 00:12:12.43\00:12:13.96 We read about it in the last chapters of the Bible, 00:12:13.96\00:12:17.33 Revelation 21 and 22. 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.96 Here's what John wrote under the inspiration of the Holy 00:12:19.96\00:12:22.86 Spirit, "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first 00:12:22.86\00:12:29.56 heaven and the first earth were passed away." 00:12:29.56\00:12:32.10 That's revelation 21:1. 00:12:32.10\00:12:34.16 He goes on to describe the Holy City, New Jerusalem, 00:12:34.16\00:12:37.13 as being prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 00:12:37.13\00:12:41.46 and then he writes, And I heard a loud voice 00:12:41.46\00:12:44.30 from heaven saying: Behold the tabernacle of God 00:12:44.30\00:12:47.66 is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall 00:12:47.66\00:12:51.46 be his people and God himself will be with them 00:12:51.46\00:12:55.03 and be their God. 00:12:55.03\00:12:57.30 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. 00:12:57.30\00:13:01.26 There shall be no more death nor sorrow nor crying and there 00:13:01.26\00:13:06.00 shall be no more pain for the former things 00:13:06.00\00:13:09.26 have passed away. 00:13:09.26\00:13:11.50 Then he who sat on the throne said, Behold, 00:13:11.50\00:13:15.10 I make all things new." 00:13:15.10\00:13:17.10 New York City Mayor David Dinkins was fond referring 00:13:19.40\00:13:22.56 to New York City as a gorgeous mosaic of ethnic and cultural 00:13:22.56\00:13:26.90 diversity. 00:13:26.90\00:13:28.40 You come to New York City and you realize right away 00:13:28.40\00:13:30.86 it is a big place, 8.5 million inhabitants. 00:13:30.86\00:13:34.76 Landmarks and icons everywhere. 00:13:34.76\00:13:36.90 For instance, right there, is the Empire State Building. 00:13:36.90\00:13:41.63 It feels in much of New York City like a remarkably safe 00:13:41.63\00:13:45.26 place because New York City is a collection of neighborhoods 00:13:45.26\00:13:48.73 and in many of them, it's common to see women 00:13:48.73\00:13:51.40 walking alone late at night. 00:13:51.40\00:13:53.06 That's how safe they either feel or are. 00:13:53.06\00:13:55.43 But in other parts of New York City, 00:13:55.43\00:13:58.33 maybe you wouldn't try that. 00:13:58.33\00:14:00.16 Some parts of the city aren't very easy on the eye 00:14:00.16\00:14:03.70 but generally New York City is beautiful and often 00:14:03.70\00:14:06.83 incredibly so. 00:14:06.83\00:14:08.46 New York Harbor, that jewel in the middle of Manhattan 00:14:08.46\00:14:11.40 known as Central Park and this place Highline Park. 00:14:11.40\00:14:14.33 It used to be an elevated railroad servicing New York 00:14:14.33\00:14:17.30 City's industrial area. 00:14:17.30\00:14:18.86 But it is being developed in the recent years 00:14:18.86\00:14:21.23 into an Oasis. 00:14:21.23\00:14:22.40 And on perfect days like this, people come here to 00:14:22.40\00:14:26.03 enjoy its beauty and its rest. 00:14:26.03\00:14:29.20 Now of course, New York City has not always lived up to 00:14:29.20\00:14:33.26 its beauty and promise, just like any other place 00:14:33.26\00:14:36.60 on earth. 00:14:36.60\00:14:37.60 But God's city, the New Jerusalem, 00:14:37.60\00:14:39.60 will be everything he says it will be. 00:14:39.60\00:14:42.10 There will be no crying. 00:14:42.10\00:14:43.83 There won't be any pain. 00:14:43.83\00:14:45.56 There won't be any sadness and there won't be any death. 00:14:45.56\00:14:49.86 No political corruption, no financial malfeasance, 00:14:49.86\00:14:53.03 no selfish grasping after position and power. 00:14:53.03\00:14:57.33 God's city will be a model of perfect unity, of harmony, 00:14:57.33\00:15:01.80 of integrity and love. 00:15:01.80\00:15:04.13 The Apostle John speaks about the New Jerusalem 00:15:04.13\00:15:07.30 in the book of Revelation when he says this: 00:15:07.30\00:15:09.70 "And the city is laid out as a square and its length 00:15:09.70\00:15:16.50 is as great as its breadth. 00:15:16.50\00:15:17.63 And he measured the city with a reed, 12000 furlongs. 00:15:17.63\00:15:22.30 Its length, breadth and height are equal." 00:15:22.30\00:15:26.76 Now let's think about that. 00:15:26.76\00:15:30.96 You know what we are talking about here? 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.96 A city 375 miles in length, breadth and height. 00:15:32.96\00:15:39.63 Talk about high-rise living. 00:15:39.63\00:15:40.73 The people of Manhattan are going to feel right at home. 00:15:40.73\00:15:44.06 This is remarkable. 00:15:44.06\00:15:45.06 This city is going to be so tall that it stretches 00:15:45.06\00:15:47.66 into space. 00:15:47.66\00:15:49.03 It will sit on the earth like a cube and its length 00:15:49.03\00:15:52.03 and breadth and height will be exactly the same. 00:15:52.03\00:15:55.56 Remarkable! 00:15:55.56\00:15:57.33 But now let's think a little bit more because the Apostle John 00:15:57.33\00:16:00.40 had more to say about this incredible place. 00:16:00.40\00:16:03.80 "And the construction of the wall was of jasper 00:16:03.80\00:16:08.46 and the city was pure gold like clear glass 00:16:08.46\00:16:11.63 and the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with 00:16:11.63\00:16:15.63 all kinds of precious stones. 00:16:15.63\00:16:18.63 The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, 00:16:18.63\00:16:22.76 the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 00:16:22.76\00:16:27.50 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, 00:16:27.50\00:16:31.93 the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, 00:16:31.93\00:16:35.86 the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, 00:16:35.86\00:16:39.56 the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 00:16:39.56\00:16:45.23 And the 12 gates were 12 pearls. 00:16:45.23\00:16:48.36 Each individual gate was of one pearl and the street 00:16:48.36\00:16:53.10 of the city was pure gold like transparent glass." 00:16:53.10\00:16:58.20 It is hard to even imagine a city as glorious as this 00:16:58.20\00:17:03.96 but this is what God promises to all who claim his pardon 00:17:03.96\00:17:07.73 and his transforming power. 00:17:07.73\00:17:10.53 John goes on to write more to describe the city 00:17:10.53\00:17:13.13 and the amazing diversity that is to be found there. 00:17:13.13\00:17:17.66 "And the nations of those who are saved shall walk 00:17:17.66\00:17:20.30 in its light and the kings of the earth bring their glory 00:17:20.30\00:17:23.96 and honor into it and they shall bring the glory and honor 00:17:23.96\00:17:28.00 of the nations into it." 00:17:28.00\00:17:30.70 Now, not all would-be immigrants who came to the United States 00:17:30.70\00:17:37.30 were allowed to enter the country and the same 00:17:37.30\00:17:40.53 is true for the land of promise. 00:17:40.53\00:17:43.86 I'll have more in just a moment. 00:17:43.86\00:17:45.86 [Music] 00:17:47.86\00:17:51.86 Time for today's Bible question. 00:18:02.23\00:18:04.53 Here it is. 00:18:04.53\00:18:05.13 Pastor Bradshaw talked about 1 John 1:9 and that God 00:18:05.13\00:18:08.43 would forgive us of all our sins. 00:18:08.43\00:18:10.93 He did and that's true. 00:18:10.93\00:18:12.06 One verse always comes to mind Matthew 12:31 in which Jesus 00:18:12.06\00:18:16.33 said that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 00:18:16.33\00:18:19.60 How do I put all of this together? 00:18:19.60\00:18:22.00 Thanks. 00:18:22.00\00:18:23.00 Well, you're welcome. 00:18:23.00\00:18:24.00 Let's try and do that. 00:18:24.00\00:18:25.03 While the Bible says that God will forgive our sins 00:18:25.03\00:18:29.10 in 1 John 1:9, the Bible does say that blaspheming 00:18:29.10\00:18:32.60 against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven and that 00:18:32.60\00:18:35.33 is because the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not 00:18:35.33\00:18:38.23 an individual sin. 00:18:38.23\00:18:39.23 It is a condition in sin. 00:18:39.23\00:18:41.80 Keep this in mind. 00:18:41.80\00:18:43.00 Just before the statement, Jesus said all manner of sin 00:18:43.00\00:18:46.20 and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men. 00:18:46.20\00:18:49.73 That's very clear. 00:18:49.73\00:18:50.73 If you can do it, God can and he is prepared 00:18:50.73\00:18:53.76 to forgive it. 00:18:53.76\00:18:54.93 And we have record in the Bible of people being restored to God 00:18:54.93\00:18:57.60 who were murderers and they were immoral and they were 00:18:57.60\00:18:59.60 dishonest and they were angry. 00:18:59.60\00:19:00.93 God forgave them. 00:19:00.93\00:19:02.70 But this blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.70 What about that? 00:19:04.70\00:19:05.70 It is not a particular sin. 00:19:05.70\00:19:06.93 It is a condition in sin. 00:19:06.93\00:19:09.50 One of the works of the Holy Spirit is to bring conviction 00:19:09.50\00:19:12.06 of sin. 00:19:12.06\00:19:13.06 You read that in John 16:8. 00:19:13.06\00:19:14.46 So when a person is involved in the sin against the Holy 00:19:14.46\00:19:19.16 Spirit, here is what happens. 00:19:19.16\00:19:20.50 The Holy Spirit speaks to that person and convicts that person 00:19:20.50\00:19:24.06 that what they are doing is wrong. 00:19:24.06\00:19:26.06 It could be about any certain sin in their life. 00:19:26.06\00:19:28.60 But what some people do is they fail to respond to the voice 00:19:28.60\00:19:31.20 of the Holy Spirit. 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.46 Eventually they come to the place where they don't 00:19:32.46\00:19:35.46 even hear God's spirit speaking to them. 00:19:35.46\00:19:37.76 They become numb or hardened against conviction. 00:19:37.76\00:19:41.80 When a person grieves the Holy Spirit what happens is the Holy 00:19:41.80\00:19:45.90 Spirits voice can no longer be heard. 00:19:45.90\00:19:48.63 That person has committed the sin against the Holy Spirit. 00:19:48.63\00:19:52.16 They have come to the place where they are absolutely not 00:19:52.16\00:19:54.43 going to repent. 00:19:54.43\00:19:56.30 If God calls you to repent and you choose not to do so, 00:19:56.30\00:19:59.40 then the sin you are clinging to cannot be forgiven. 00:19:59.40\00:20:03.83 If you don't confess it, what can God do? 00:20:03.83\00:20:06.30 Now there is a resource on our website I would love for you 00:20:06.30\00:20:09.10 to look at on this subject. 00:20:09.10\00:20:10.23 Go to studies.itiswritten.com, studies.itiswritten.com. 00:20:10.23\00:20:12.83 Look at the Search for Certainty studies and you'll find 00:20:12.83\00:20:17.46 there a study on the Holy Spirit and the unpardonable sin. 00:20:17.46\00:20:22.86 This will give you a little more information. 00:20:22.86\00:20:24.83 If you have a question you'd like me to answer 00:20:24.83\00:20:26.23 on this program, go to itiswritten.com 00:20:26.23\00:20:28.63 and ask your question there and I'll do my best 00:20:28.63\00:20:32.16 to answer your question on a future program. 00:20:32.16\00:20:35.13 [Music ... sound of people] 00:20:41.50\00:20:49.40 New York City is a remarkably diverse place. 00:20:51.76\00:20:53.53 But even the diversity of New York City cannot compare 00:20:53.53\00:20:56.50 to what is going to be experienced when the saved 00:20:56.50\00:20:59.66 of all ages enter into God's Holy City in the new earth. 00:20:59.66\00:21:04.53 At that time, people from all eras of this earth's history 00:21:04.53\00:21:08.46 will gather and dwell together in the presence of God 00:21:08.46\00:21:12.56 in complete and perfect harmony. 00:21:12.56\00:21:15.46 And just as would-be immigrants into these United States 00:21:15.46\00:21:19.23 were not granted unconditional entry when they came through 00:21:19.23\00:21:23.73 Ellis Island, so people will not be given unconditionally 00:21:23.73\00:21:27.50 the gift of salvation. 00:21:27.50\00:21:28.93 The Bible says this, the ancient apostle wrote 00:21:28.93\00:21:32.00 these words in Revelation 21:27, "But there shall by no means 00:21:32.00\00:21:37.60 enter it anything that defiles or causes an abomination 00:21:37.60\00:21:41.70 or a lie but only those who are written in the Lamb's 00:21:41.70\00:21:45.26 book of life." 00:21:45.26\00:21:46.26 That's Revelation 21:27. 00:21:46.26\00:21:49.73 Earlier in the same chapter you read a similar verse. 00:21:49.73\00:21:53.73 He who overcomes shall inherit all thins and I will be his God 00:21:53.73\00:21:59.36 and he shall be my son. 00:21:59.36\00:22:01.76 Revelation 21:7. 00:22:01.76\00:22:04.63 Throughout the book of Revelation, 00:22:05.86\00:22:08.03 this is the promise we find. 00:22:08.03\00:22:10.13 Those who have experienced victory over the power of sin 00:22:10.13\00:22:12.73 through the power of God's grace, those who have given 00:22:12.73\00:22:16.20 their lives to God, who have lived surrendered lives 00:22:16.20\00:22:19.33 as Jesus lives his life in them these are the ones that God 00:22:19.33\00:22:24.30 can trust in heaven. 00:22:24.30\00:22:25.70 Here is Revelation 3:5, "He who overcomes shall 00:22:25.70\00:22:30.80 be clothed in white garments and I will not blot out his name 00:22:30.80\00:22:35.03 from the Book of Life but I will confess his name 00:22:35.03\00:22:37.56 before my Father and before his angels." 00:22:37.56\00:22:40.53 And that can be your experience. 00:22:40.53\00:22:43.86 Writing to the Colossians, Paul stated that the mystery 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.90 of the gospel was Christ in you the hope of glory. 00:22:46.90\00:22:52.56 These days, if you travel from one country to another 00:22:52.56\00:22:55.06 you are going to have to have a passport. 00:22:55.06\00:22:57.16 Our passport into the true land of promise is Jesus Christ. 00:22:57.16\00:23:03.20 If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, 00:23:03.20\00:23:06.53 if you have surrendered to him, then you can live in confidence, 00:23:06.53\00:23:10.86 confident that one day soon you'll be living with him in 00:23:10.86\00:23:15.30 that world made new. 00:23:15.30\00:23:17.76 Four years before her death in 1883, Emma Lazarus wrote 00:23:20.40\00:23:26.33 the lines chiseled at the base of the statue of liberty 00:23:26.33\00:23:29.93 whose torch still beckons multitudes to a better life 00:23:29.93\00:23:33.63 in America. 00:23:33.63\00:23:35.43 "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning 00:23:35.43\00:23:40.53 to breathe free. 00:23:40.53\00:23:42.33 The wretched refuse of your teaming shores. 00:23:42.33\00:23:46.30 Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. 00:23:46.30\00:23:50.73 I lift my lamp beside the golden door." 00:23:50.73\00:23:57.43 But a better and a greater golden 00:23:57.43\00:23:59.06 door beckons us. 00:23:59.06\00:24:01.06 The light of God's word welcomes the faithful 00:24:01.06\00:24:03.33 with a torch that shines far more brightly than the light 00:24:03.33\00:24:06.50 in New York Harbor. 00:24:06.50\00:24:08.60 And all are invited ... 00:24:08.60\00:24:10.06 the weary, the wayward, the wretched, 00:24:10.06\00:24:13.60 the tempest-tossed. 00:24:13.60\00:24:14.80 If you'll allow God's saving, transforming grace to transform 00:24:14.80\00:24:20.33 you, then you can look forward confidently to being a forever 00:24:20.33\00:24:23.40 citizen of God's true land of promise. 00:24:23.40\00:24:31.36 [Heavy military ominous music] An ancient city rises ... 00:24:41.80\00:24:47.46 (music) ... 00:24:47.46\00:24:51.96 the most wicked city on earth. 00:24:51.96\00:24:55.36 The prophets said it would be destroyed ... 00:25:00.43\00:25:03.50 they were right. 00:25:06.23\00:25:10.10 It has never
