It has stood the test of time God's Book, 00:00:12.01\00:00:18.55 The bible Still relevant in today's 00:00:18.55\00:00:24.02 complex world It is written 00:00:24.02\00:00:29.86 Sharing hope around The Globe 00:00:29.86\00:00:34.33 ??? Music ??? One of the strangest characters 00:00:41.50\00:00:47.18 you're ever likely to hear about is the Englishman Jeremy 00:00:47.18\00:00:50.05 Bentham, who was born in 1748 and died in 1832. 00:00:50.05\00:00:57.79 Now just to give you an idea of how, well, different, Mr. 00:00:57.79\00:01:01.76 Bentham was, he willed that his body be stuffed and preserved in 00:01:01.76\00:01:07.66 his everyday clothing and then put on public display for 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.53 posterity. 00:01:10.53\00:01:12.93 And that's what happened! 00:01:12.93\00:01:14.14 You can see him, to this day, in a wooden cabinet at the 00:01:14.14\00:01:17.24 University College in London. 00:01:17.24\00:01:19.44 His head, however, is wax--and that's because in the preserving 00:01:19.44\00:01:22.94 process someone messed up, robbing his real face of most of 00:01:22.94\00:01:26.18 its expressions and leaving it too unattractive for viewing. 00:01:26.18\00:01:31.69 The wax head was therefore substituted for his real one, 00:01:31.69\00:01:35.22 and for years the real head, with two glass eyes he used to 00:01:35.22\00:01:39.46 carry around in his pockets, sat on the floor, between Bentham's 00:01:39.46\00:01:42.66 legs. 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.53 Well you've heard it said that nothing's sacred, and time and 00:01:44.53\00:01:47.07 again the college students would make off with Bentham's head. 00:01:47.07\00:01:50.67 One time, students stole the head and demanded a ransom of 00:01:50.67\00:01:53.74 100 pounds to be paid to some local homeless shelter. 00:01:53.74\00:01:56.95 The college agreed to pay 10 pounds and the head was 00:01:56.95\00:01:59.25 returned. 00:01:59.25\00:02:00.52 On another occasion, the head was again stolen by students, 00:02:00.52\00:02:03.69 was found in a locker at a train station in Scotland. 00:02:03.69\00:02:08.22 But the last straw came when it was discovered being used by 00:02:08.22\00:02:12.16 students for soccer practice! 00:02:12.16\00:02:14.70 After that, the head was safely secured and is no longer on 00:02:14.70\00:02:18.53 display. 00:02:18.53\00:02:20.04 The rest of Mr. Bentham, including his wax head included, 00:02:20.04\00:02:22.87 still is. 00:02:22.87\00:02:24.41 Now Bentham is most famous, though, not for his corpse but 00:02:24.41\00:02:27.28 for his social philosophy. 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.68 He was a leading advocate of utilitarianism: "the greatest 00:02:29.68\00:02:33.42 happiness of the greatest number." 00:02:33.42\00:02:36.12 The idea is this: You try to make laws so that they'll bring 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.59 the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of 00:02:39.59\00:02:42.86 people. 00:02:42.86\00:02:44.53 If law x make five million people a little happy, but law y 00:02:44.53\00:02:48.46 make 20 million people very happy, then the government 00:02:48.46\00:02:52.70 should make law y as opposed to law x. 00:02:52.70\00:02:58.11 Mr Bentham even created a mathematical scheme, a calculus, 00:02:58.11\00:03:02.38 that supposedly could determine happiness: and it would be great 00:03:02.38\00:03:05.98 to know what makes people happy, because you could then create 00:03:05.98\00:03:09.42 laws that will bring this happiness. 00:03:09.42\00:03:15.06 At 57-years-old, and still a bachelor, he wrote to a woman he 00:03:15.06\00:03:18.46 hadn't seen in sixteen years and he explained to her why - based 00:03:18.46\00:03:33.64 on the laws and rules that applied to them - they should be 00:03:33.64\00:03:36.58 married. 00:03:36.58\00:03:48.79 Well, surprise of surprises, she wasn't that impressed with his 00:03:48.79\00:03:52.26 laws and mathematics and she turned him down cold. 00:03:52.26\00:04:02.47 He waited 22 years and then gave it another shot, but wouldn't 00:04:02.47\00:04:06.04 you know? 00:04:06.04\00:04:07.21 She turned him down again. 00:04:07.21\00:04:09.14 ou can imagine,. 00:04:09.14\00:04:11.45 Well, darling, I've worked out the numbers and the laws and the 00:04:11.45\00:04:13.62 figures, and it seems that, according to my mathematical 00:04:13.62\00:04:15.92 calculations, we should be in love and get married. 00:04:15.92\00:04:20.09 I'm glad I didn't propose to Melissa that way. 00:04:20.09\00:04:22.06 I reckon I'd still be single! 00:04:22.06\00:04:23.49 See, Bentham lived in a time when humanity truly believed in 00:04:23.49\00:04:26.80 the ability of logic, and law, and reason to answer all human 00:04:26.80\00:04:31.23 needs. 00:04:31.23\00:04:32.47 For many people, law and logic and reason were the sacred keys 00:04:32.47\00:04:35.90 to unlock all truth. 00:04:35.90\00:04:37.81 For many people believe reason and law, natural law, was all 00:04:37.81\00:04:41.71 that was needed. 00:04:41.71\00:04:43.85 Now all through the gospels in the Bible we have stories of 00:04:43.85\00:04:48.58 folks who were also sticklers for the law-at least the law as 00:04:48.58\00:04:52.39 they understood it. 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.09 One account in particular shows what I mean. 00:04:54.09\00:04:58.26 We are going to rewinding about 2000 years. 00:04:58.26\00:05:02.10 When you realize that it was only in the past 250 years that 00:05:02.10\00:05:06.10 doctors figured it would be a good idea to wash their hands 00:05:06.10\00:05:11.14 before surgery, you can only imagine what the medicine must 00:05:11.14\00:05:14.64 have been like in ancient Israel at the time of Jesus. 00:05:14.64\00:05:17.68 In this context we come to the story. 00:05:17.68\00:05:20.42 Jesus and His disciples are walking along and they came 00:05:20.42\00:05:23.52 across a man who had been blind from birth. 00:05:23.52\00:05:26.32 So what did Jesus do? 00:05:26.32\00:05:28.16 The Bible says this, and we read this in the gospels, Jesus 00:05:28.16\00:05:32.76 meeting a blind man. 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.16 What does the Word of God say? 00:05:35.16\00:05:38.40 "He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He 00:05:38.40\00:05:42.17 anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 00:05:42.17\00:05:47.08 And He said to him, 'Go, wash in the pool of Siloam' . 00:05:47.08\00:05:51.25 so he went and washed, and came back seeing" 00:05:51.25\00:05:55.65 John 9:6, 7 NKJV). 00:05:55.65\00:05:56.89 That's Incredible. 00:05:56.89\00:06:01.49 A man, blind from birth, is instantly healed. 00:06:01.49\00:06:09.90 As you can imagine, this caused quite the stir. 00:06:09.90\00:06:12.47 In fact, some people had a hard time believing that this was the 00:06:12.47\00:06:15.97 same man who used to sit around begging. 00:06:15.97\00:06:19.24 After all, how could someone, blind from birth, now suddenly 00:06:19.24\00:06:22.48 see? 00:06:22.48\00:06:23.81 Eventually, they brought him to the religious leaders, who had 00:06:23.81\00:06:26.98 to acknowledge the incredible miracle. 00:06:26.98\00:06:30.05 But there was one problem. 00:06:30.05\00:06:31.49 Jesus had performed this amazing miracle on the Sabbath day, and 00:06:31.49\00:06:35.26 according to their understanding of the law, you weren't 00:06:35.26\00:06:39.29 supposed to do any kind of on the Sabbath. 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.80 Thus they were arguing that Jesus couldn't have been from 00:06:41.80\00:06:46.00 God because He, at least in their thinking, had violated the 00:06:46.00\00:06:50.21 law. 00:06:50.21\00:06:52.31 "So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, 00:06:52.31\00:06:59.41 'Give God the glory! 00:06:59.41\00:07:01.45 We know that this Man is a sinner.'" 00:07:01.45\00:07:04.35 (John 9:24, NKJV) Can you imagine? 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.52 A man blind all his life is healed, instantly, and all that 00:07:06.52\00:07:09.89 the leaders can think about is the fact that it was done in 00:07:09.89\00:07:12.03 violation of a law, at least the law as they understood it. 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.83 Talk about taking the idea of law to an extreme! 00:07:15.83\00:07:19.63 Now don't get me wrong. 00:07:19.63\00:07:21.00 I am not talking against law. 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.14 On the contrary - I would uplift law, especially God's law. 00:07:22.14\00:07:27.91 Laws are supposed to be good things, but sometimes they can 00:07:27.91\00:07:31.75 be terrible, with disastrous effect. 00:07:31.75\00:07:35.45 I'll give you an example of that in just a moment. 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.85 [Music] 00:07:40.16\00:07:45.29 It's time for today's Bible question, and here it is. 00:07:54.27\00:07:58.94 As a kid, I remember going to church about once or twice a 00:07:58.94\00:08:01.34 year with my parents. 00:08:01.34\00:08:03.35 I'm not really into religion, but I don't want to go to hell 00:08:03.35\00:08:07.15 when I die. 00:08:07.15\00:08:08.95 A friend of mine died in a car accident last month and I don't 00:08:08.95\00:08:12.02 know if he is in heaven or hell. 00:08:12.02\00:08:14.52 If I don't want to end up in hell, what do I need to do? 00:08:14.52\00:08:18.49 A serious question you're asking. 00:08:18.49\00:08:20.66 I tell you what, I don't want to go to hell either! 00:08:20.66\00:08:24.23 So what do we do to make sure we don't go there? 00:08:24.23\00:08:27.57 There's a great verse in the Bible. 00:08:27.57\00:08:29.94 It's in the book of first John, chapter 5 and verse 12. 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.51 It says, "He that has the Son has life, he who does not have 00:08:32.51\00:08:38.11 the Son of God does not have life." 00:08:38.11\00:08:41.38 Everlasting life is the gift God wants to give you. 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.42 And the way to receive everlasting life is to possess 00:08:44.42\00:08:47.42 Jesus - to have faith in Him. 00:08:47.42\00:08:48.62 Simply not going to hell isn't going to get a person too 00:08:48.62\00:08:53.63 terribly far, but faith in Jesus will take care of you in the 00:08:53.63\00:08:57.80 world to come, and will bless you in this life. 00:08:57.80\00:09:02.17 If you don't have a whole lot of background with the Bible or 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.94 with faith in God, let me recommend something to you. 00:09:04.94\00:09:07.84 Get a Bible, and start reading in say, the book of John or the 00:09:07.84\00:09:11.31 book of Matthew. 00:09:11.31\00:09:12.71 As you read, look for Jesus. 00:09:12.71\00:09:14.12 And when you come to Jesus, ask yourself, What is this person 00:09:14.12\00:09:18.35 Jesus like? 00:09:18.35\00:09:20.26 And when you get an idea of what Jesus is like, ask yourself, Is 00:09:20.26\00:09:24.19 this the kind of Person I'd like to know? 00:09:24.19\00:09:27.46 Do I want to have this person involved in my life? 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.37 And if your answer to that question is Yes, then tell God 00:09:31.37\00:09:34.87 that. 00:09:34.87\00:09:35.94 Tell him "God, I want Jesus, and I want You in my life." 00:09:35.94\00:09:40.54 And go from there. 00:09:40.54\00:09:41.91 Your focus is going to be on Jesus, and you won't be worrying 00:09:41.91\00:09:45.45 too much about going to hell. 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.62 To get your questions to us at It is Written, please go to or 00:09:47.62\00:09:50.12 website itiswritten.com, 00:09:58.59\00:10:00.73 [Music] 00:10:01.40\00:10:04.10 Laws ought to be for the benefit of everyone. 00:10:07.24\00:10:10.44 But that's not often far from the case. 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.74 Here's a painfully familiar example of that. 00:10:12.74\00:10:15.68 At one time in many American states, slavery was legal. 00:10:15.68\00:10:19.68 America's own beloved Constitution made a legal 00:10:19.68\00:10:22.92 provision for it. 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.15 Even closer to our time, many people can remember the Jim Crow 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.66 Laws, the segregation laws in the American south. 00:10:28.66\00:10:34.36 Now let me read some of them to you. 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.50 Let me read you a few: "Nurses: 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.73 No person or corporation shall require any white 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.60 female nurse to nurse in wards or rooms in hospitals, either 00:10:42.60\00:10:47.68 public or private, in which negro men are placed. 00:10:47.68\00:10:56.42 Buses: All passenger stations in this state operated by any 00:10:56.42\00:11:01.89 motor transportation company shall have separate waiting 00:11:01.89\00:11:05.09 rooms or space and separate ticket windows for the white 00:11:05.09\00:11:07.30 and colored races. 00:11:07.30\00:11:13.47 Restaurants: It shall be unlawful to conduct a restaurant 00:11:13.47\00:11:17.04 or other place for the serving of food in the city, at which 00:11:17.04\00:11:20.64 white and colored people are served in the same room, unless 00:11:20.64\00:11:23.91 such white and colored persons are effectually separated by a 00:11:23.91\00:11:28.52 solid partition extending from the floor upward to a distance 00:11:28.52\00:11:33.56 of seven feet or higher, and unless a separate entrance from 00:11:33.56\00:11:36.89 the street is provided for each compartment. 00:11:36.89\00:11:47.04 These laws tell us about the character of the lawgiver, don't 00:11:47.04\00:11:50.24 they? 00:11:50.24\00:11:51.84 The laws reflect the attitude and thinking of the entity that 00:11:51.84\00:11:54.54 has created them, don't they? 00:11:54.54\00:11:56.58 And in these cases, the laws reveal a deep-seated racism and 00:11:56.58\00:12:00.82 bias. 00:12:00.82\00:12:02.58 The laws of a nation can tell us something about the character 00:12:02.58\00:12:05.52 of the law-making power of that nation. 00:12:05.52\00:12:08.66 Now think about this in relation to God's law. 00:12:08.66\00:12:11.93 Just as the laws of a land reveal something about the 00:12:11.93\00:12:14.76 law-makers of that land, God's law reveals something about Him 00:12:14.76\00:12:18.47 as well. 00:12:18.47\00:12:20.70 His law tells us what God is like. 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.61 His law, the Ten Commandments, are a reflection of His 00:12:24.61\00:12:28.21 character. 00:12:28.21\00:12:30.11 Think for a moment about the Ten Commandments and what they tell 00:12:30.11\00:12:32.58 us about God. 00:12:32.58\00:12:36.79 But before we begin, I'd like to dismiss right off the bat the 00:12:36.79\00:12:39.79 idea, sometimes expressed by well-meaning people, that God's 00:12:39.79\00:12:43.02 moral law has been abolished, that Jesus death on the cross 00:12:43.02\00:12:47.70 wiped out our obligation and our need to keep the Ten 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.40 Commandments. 00:12:50.40\00:12:52.03 Look at this text, however. 00:12:52.03\00:12:53.30 It's 1 John 3:4, the Bible says, "Whosoever committeth sin 00:12:53.30\00:13:00.94 transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the 00:13:00.94\00:13:07.22 law" (KJV 1 John 3:4). 00:13:07.22\00:13:10.15 Sin is the transgression of the law. 00:13:10.15\00:13:12.15 Now what law could that be? 00:13:12.15\00:13:13.15 Jim Crow law? 00:13:13.15\00:13:14.42 The law of the scribes and the Pharisees? 00:13:14.42\00:13:16.69 No, it is talking about God's law, the Ten Commandments. 00:13:16.69\00:13:19.73 How do I know? 00:13:19.73\00:13:21.00 Well, it's pretty easy, isn't it?. 00:13:21.00\00:13:23.57 If I steal, which is a violation of one of the Commandments, 00:13:23.57\00:13:27.04 have I sinned? 00:13:27.04\00:13:28.57 If I commit adultery, which is a violation of one of the Ten 00:13:28.57\00:13:32.27 Commandments, have I sinned then? 00:13:32.27\00:13:33.78 What about if I lie, if I lie. 00:13:33.78\00:13:34.84 have I sinned? 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.68 I think in all cases, we know pretty well that the answer is 00:13:37.68\00:13:42.65 yes. 00:13:42.65\00:13:44.65 Yes, if I do any of those things I have violated God's law and I 00:13:44.65\00:13:47.79 have sinned. 00:13:47.79\00:13:49.66 So, it's clear to me that sin is a violation of God's law. 00:13:49.66\00:13:54.36 The apostle James certainly thought so. 00:13:54.36\00:13:57.37 Read what he wrote in the Book of James. 00:13:57.37\00:14:00.84 "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in 00:14:00.84\00:14:04.97 one point, he is guilty of all. 00:14:04.97\00:14:07.48 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not 00:14:07.48\00:14:11.51 murder." 00:14:11.51\00:14:12.78 Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you 00:14:12.78\00:14:16.79 have become a transgressor of the law." 00:14:16.79\00:14:21.02 (James 2:10,11, NKJV) That text 00:14:21.02\00:14:23.12 just doesn't make sense if the Ten Commandments had been 00:14:23.12\00:14:25.06 abolished, does it? 00:14:25.06\00:14:27.63 Now didn't Jesus say the two greatest commandments were love 00:14:27.63\00:14:31.20 to God and love to others? 00:14:31.20\00:14:33.23 Isn't that the essence of the law? 00:14:33.23\00:14:35.57 Yes, Jesus did say that; and yes, that is the essence of the 00:14:35.57\00:14:38.17 law; and yes, I'm glad you asked because it gets precisely to my 00:14:38.17\00:14:42.34 point, which is that God's law is an expression of His 00:14:42.34\00:14:46.31 character, and love is at the center of God's character, which 00:14:46.31\00:14:49.85 is why love-love for God, and love for others, forms the 00:14:49.85\00:14:54.66 foundation of God's law. 00:14:54.66\00:14:57.23 When asked about the greatest of the commandments, Jesus 00:14:57.23\00:15:01.73 answered this way in Matthew, Chapter 22. 00:15:01.73\00:15:06.60 Jesus said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy 00:15:06.60\00:15:11.84 heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 00:15:11.84\00:15:15.04 This is the first and great commandment. 00:15:15.04\00:15:19.41 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as 00:15:19.41\00:15:23.35 thyself" That's Matthew 22:37-39. 00:15:23.35\00:15:27.09 Notice - love God, love your neighbor. 00:15:27.09\00:15:30.56 Love is the foundation of God's law, and that's because God 00:15:30.56\00:15:34.86 Himself is love. 00:15:34.86\00:15:36.10 This doesn't negate the Ten Commandments; no, the Ten 00:15:36.10\00:15:39.07 Commandments are the way in which we show our love for God 00:15:39.07\00:15:42.50 and our love for our neighbor. 00:15:42.50\00:15:44.14 The first four commandments, no false gods, no idols, not taking 00:15:44.14\00:15:47.84 the Lord's name in vain, and keeping the Sabbath-these all 00:15:47.84\00:15:51.28 deal with a person's relationship with God. 00:15:51.28\00:15:54.42 Can you imagine someone saying that he loves Jesus, and yet 00:15:54.42\00:15:57.95 every time he mentions the name "Jesus," it's used as a curse? 00:15:57.95\00:16:01.69 Now that's not love. 00:16:01.69\00:16:03.43 And the last six commandments, about honoring your parents, 00:16:03.43\00:16:06.86 about not committing adultery, not stealing, not murdering, not 00:16:06.86\00:16:09.96 lying, not coveting-these all have to do with how we reveal 00:16:09.96\00:16:14.00 our love to others. 00:16:14.00\00:16:15.77 Can you imagine someone telling his neighbor, "Oh, yes, I love 00:16:15.77\00:16:18.11 you!" 00:16:18.11\00:16:19.04 and then stealing from him? 00:16:19.04\00:16:21.08 No, of course not. 00:16:21.08\00:16:23.08 God's moral law was given to us as a means of guiding us in how 00:16:23.08\00:16:25.58 we live, in how we can express love to Him and to others. 00:16:25.58\00:16:30.22 You don't usually think of the law and love together, but don't 00:16:30.22\00:16:33.69 tell that to apostle John. 00:16:33.69\00:16:35.99 Here's what John wrote: "By this we know that we love the 00:16:35.99\00:16:40.03 children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 00:16:40.03\00:16:44.97 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: 00:16:44.97\00:16:49.34 and his commandments are not grievous" (1 John 5:2,3:KJV). 00:16:49.34\00:16:53.11 Anyone can say that they love God, but according to John, by 00:16:53.11\00:16:59.65 keeping His commandments we reveal the reality of that love. 00:16:59.65\00:17:04.29 Here's what John said again. 00:17:04.29\00:17:07.72 This is from 2nd John: "And this is love, that we walk after his 00:17:07.72\00:17:13.83 commandments" (2 John 6, KJV). 00:17:13.83\00:17:16.60 Again, love is manifested by obedience to the commandments. 00:17:16.60\00:17:19.50 Here's Jesus Himself: John 14:14, he said, "If you love me, 00:17:19.50\00:17:24.74 keep my commandments" (John 14:15NKJV). 00:17:24.74\00:17:28.64 How much simpler could it be? 00:17:28.64\00:17:30.75 I've heard people say, "Well, the Ten Commandments don't 00:17:30.75\00:17:33.18 matter. 00:17:33.18\00:17:34.78 What matters is that you love others." 00:17:34.78\00:17:36.65 Well, on the surface that sounds nice but if you think about it, 00:17:36.65\00:17:39.79 it makes about as much sense as saying, "Murdering you neighbor 00:17:39.79\00:17:42.82 doesn't matter, just as long as you love him." 00:17:42.82\00:17:45.69 Just as you give your children rules to follow because you love 00:17:45.69\00:17:47.90 them and want what's best for them, God does the same for us, 00:17:47.90\00:17:50.80 and those basic rules are found in the law of God. 00:17:50.80\00:17:55.14 It's that simple. 00:17:55.14\00:17:56.44 In just a moment, The United States, just moments away 00:17:56.44\00:18:01.04 from a military crisis, In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God 00:18:01.04\00:18:07.45 says "It is written 'Man shall not live by bread alone but by 00:18:07.45\00:18:11.29 every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God'." 00:18:11.29\00:18:15.09 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:18:15.09\00:18:18.29 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially 00:18:35.84\00:18:38.85 Integrity is very important to God. 00:18:45.39\00:18:47.86 In Proverbs 16:8 we read, "Better is little with 00:18:47.86\00:18:51.06 righteousness than great revenues without right." 00:18:51.06\00:18:55.10 The devil tempts people to cheat, cut corners, to rip other 00:18:55.10\00:18:57.77 people off, just to get a little MORE. 00:18:57.77\00:19:01.40 A friend of mine was featured in an article in an international 00:19:01.40\00:19:04.34 magazine for the simple fact that he was an honest mechanic. 00:19:04.34\00:19:08.28 When one shop wanted to charge the writer hundreds of dollars 00:19:08.28\00:19:11.18 for a job, my friend told him he could do it for 25. 00:19:11.18\00:19:14.48 Now, he could have charged more, but his integrity meant 00:19:14.48\00:19:17.32 something to him. 00:19:17.32\00:19:18.99 I once pointed out to a cashier that she hadn't charged me for 00:19:18.99\00:19:21.49 something. 00:19:21.49\00:19:22.46 She said, "Oh, I'd have never known." 00:19:22.46\00:19:24.36 And I said to her, "Yes, but I'd have known." 00:19:24.36\00:19:27.70 Its better to have less and retain your honour, than to 00:19:27.70\00:19:30.43 reach for more... 00:19:30.43\00:19:32.30 and lose your integrity. 00:19:32.30\00:19:35.00 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:19:35.00\00:19:37.67 Let's live today by find Eyes for India on-line at 00:20:27.72\00:20:31.09 ItIsWritten.com. 00:20:31.09\00:20:33.46 You know, for decades the United States government kept under 00:20:35.26\00:20:38.27 wraps a secret: at the same time that the United States and the 00:20:38.27\00:20:42.60 former Soviet Union almost went to war over the Cuban Missile 00:20:42.60\00:20:46.07 Crisis, an America U2 spy plane accidentally blundered into 00:20:46.07\00:20:50.45 Soviet airspace, bringing the world dangerously close to 00:20:50.45\00:20:53.52 nuclear war. 00:20:53.52\00:20:57.12 On the night of Oct 27, 1962, a very seasoned American pilot 00:20:57.12\00:21:01.66 named Captain Charles Maultsby was flying on a secret mission 00:21:01.66\00:21:05.76 to the North Pole, where he was to collect radioactive samples 00:21:05.76\00:21:10.37 from Soviet Nuclear tests. 00:21:10.37\00:21:12.53 On his long, seven hour flight, Maultsby was going to rely on 00:21:12.53\00:21:16.17 ancient navigation technique-he would follow the stars, because 00:21:16.17\00:21:20.78 at 70,000 feet in the air, he didn't need to worry about 00:21:20.78\00:21:23.31 clouds. 00:21:23.31\00:21:25.48 After a few hours, though, the sky suddenly filled with 00:21:25.48\00:21:28.85 beautiful bright lights. 00:21:28.85\00:21:31.25 It was the aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, and the air 00:21:31.25\00:21:34.02 outside his cockpit exploded with awesome flashes of orange 00:21:34.02\00:21:38.26 and violet and crimson colors. 00:21:38.26\00:21:41.13 He might have enjoyed the show except for one problem: those 00:21:41.13\00:21:45.30 lights blocked his view of the stars and by the time the light 00:21:45.30\00:21:48.67 show was over, Maultsby knew that something was wrong. 00:21:48.67\00:21:53.11 He wasn't where he should have been. 00:21:53.11\00:21:55.81 What he didn't realize, at least at first, was that he had 00:21:55.81\00:21:58.41 veered into Soviet air space. 00:21:58.41\00:22:00.52 He was more than a thousand miles of course. 00:22:00.52\00:22:04.32 Now, under any circumstances, this would have been dangerous 00:22:04.32\00:22:06.89 enough, but with the Russians and the Americans already in 00:22:06.89\00:22:10.13 each other's hair over over events in Cuba, the situation 00:22:10.13\00:22:14.23 was on a knife edge. 00:22:14.23\00:22:16.26 The Russians had already sent fighters in the air, to try and 00:22:16.26\00:22:19.77 intercept the plane, because for all they knew, this was a 00:22:19.77\00:22:23.44 bomber coming down to attack them! 00:22:23.44\00:22:26.24 Fortunately, in just the nick of time, Maultsby was able to get 00:22:26.24\00:22:29.84 the plane back safely, and the tensions settled down, though 00:22:29.84\00:22:34.45 later the Soviets warned the United States that something 00:22:34.45\00:22:37.62 like this could have pushed them over the edge. 00:22:37.62\00:22:41.06 Charles Maultsby needed something to guide him, and that 00:22:41.06\00:22:44.16 was the stars, and when he lost site of his guide, he veered off 00:22:44.16\00:22:48.66 track. 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.73 It's the same with God's law. 00:22:50.73\00:22:52.27 It's a guide for us; it sets parameters for us; it tells us, 00:22:52.27\00:22:56.97 not to veer this way or that way, because if you get too far 00:22:56.97\00:23:01.08 off course, bad consequences can occur. 00:23:01.08\00:23:05.58 And that's what the law is there for. 00:23:05.58\00:23:08.68 It's not there to save us. 00:23:08.68\00:23:09.48 Keep in mind: trying to be saved by the law is like staring in a 00:23:09.48\00:23:13.29 mirror hoping that the mirror will remove your wrinkles. 00:23:13.29\00:23:17.09 God's law was never meant to bring salvation. 00:23:17.09\00:23:20.70 If we could be saved by keeping the law, Jesus wouldn't have 00:23:20.70\00:23:23.80 come and died for us. 00:23:23.80\00:23:25.60 How it works is if you, like me, have compared your life to 00:23:25.60\00:23:29.20 God's law, you have seen just how short you have fallen. 00:23:29.20\00:23:34.21 Before God's law, we all stand condemned. 00:23:34.21\00:23:37.71 The law is what shows that we are sinners! 00:23:37.71\00:23:41.35 The good news is Jesus. 00:23:41.35\00:23:42.82 He died because we have not kept God's law. 00:23:42.82\00:23:47.12 He paid the penalty for our transgression of the law. 00:23:47.12\00:23:51.53 And by faith in Him, we are forgiven that transgression and 00:23:51.53\00:23:55.43 we can stand perfect before God and under no condemnation for 00:23:55.43\00:23:59.53 our violation of the law. 00:23:59.53\00:24:03.04 Yes, God's law still is in effect. 00:24:03.04\00:24:05.24 It shows us our sin, and that leads us to Jesus, who will 00:24:05.24\00:24:09.41 forgive us for our sin, when we give ourselves to Him and claim 00:24:09.41\00:24:15.15 that forgiveness for ourselves. 00:24:15.15\00:24:16.85 Have you done that? 00:24:16.85\00:24:18.19 Have you given yourself to Jesus? 00:24:18.19\00:24:20.66 And have you claimed his forgiveness for you? 00:24:20.66\00:24:22.96 To not do that leaves you under the condemnation that comes from 00:24:22.96\00:24:27.46 having broken God's law, something we've all done. 00:24:27.46\00:24:31.27 But today you can say, Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. 00:24:31.27\00:24:35.30 I know therefore, that I am condemned because of my sin, but 00:24:35.30\00:24:39.21 I don't want to be condemned. 00:24:39.21\00:24:41.38 Jesus died for me. 00:24:41.38\00:24:43.78 I want to accept that. 00:24:43.78\00:24:45.15 I want to get out from under the death sentence of having 00:24:45.15\00:24:48.78 committed sins and having broken God's law. 00:24:48.78\00:24:51.19 I want to be free. 00:24:51.19\00:24:52.49 I want to be clean. 00:24:52.49\00:24:53.82 I want to be forgiven. 00:24:53.82\00:24:55.29 Are you ready to say that to Jesus today? 00:24:55.29\00:24:57.66 Let's say that together. 00:24:57.66\00:24:58.99 Pray with me. 00:24:58.99\00:25:00.10 Our father in heaven, we thank you today 00:25:00.10\00:25:03.67 for your goodness to us. 00:25:03.67\00:25:05.13 I know there are times, perhaps, that some of us might feel as 00:25:05.13\00:25:09.77 though your will, your way, your law is restrictive. 00:25:09.77\00:25:14.41 But what we know by reading the Bible is that in truth what you 00:25:14.41\00:25:17.78 are wanting to do is to keep us from back harm, to keep us back 00:25:17.78\00:25:21.22 from sin and to keep us close to you and safe under the shadow 00:25:21.22\00:25:25.22 of your wings.
