Before we start to get too
specific about this, lets be

ask you what prayer is.

What is it?

I think there is two phases
of prayer, one is personal

prayer, personal experience
relationship with Jesus

Christ, that prayer is the
breath of the soul, someone

had said.

Someone had said that is like
talking to God like a friend,

personal.

The other is like a key
that opens the treasure house of

heaven.

That's so personal.

I think that
prayer goes beyond that.

Prayer is a weapon, -a
weapon- in the hand of the

believer.

How is prayer a weapon?-well
because if we study around

closer, we discover that
we are in a world of war.

We are in a battle.

But this is a spiritual
battle that is going on.

The battle for your soul.

And in a battle, God tells
us how to be prepared for the

battle, how to dress for
the battle, how to stand for the

battle and then what
weapon to use for the battle.

That is found in
Ephesians the 6th chapter,

JB: So even thought when you
think about the armor of God,

prayer often is left off
the list and some people's

recitation is connected
inextricably actually with

the armor of God, isn't it.

RH: Yeah it's the
only weapon that he has.

There is no other weapon,
you don't fight with the flesh

against the spirit.

You can't fight against
the invisible with the visible.

So you need that invisible
power, that invisible force

which is prayer.

And prayer
surrounds the warrior.

Prayer is the weapon
through the Word of God.

It Is Written that's the weapon.

But is a weapon of
prayer that delivers the sword.

talk about what prayer

ought to look like
"Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray my soul the
Lord will keep" ... alright,

that's a prayer.

I have people
ask me all the time,

"you have to How do I pray?
00:03:23.23\00:03:24.23
Do I pray like this?
00:03:24.23\00:03:25.23
Tell me how
prayer works practically,

what is it?
00:03:27.23\00:03:28.23
RH: The first
experience I ever had in prayer,

I was a gang banger
in Brooklyn, New York
00:03:30.16\00:03:32.16
and I stole a boat,
and I'm out in this boat.
00:03:32.16\00:03:34.36
JB: You stole a boat?
00:03:34.36\00:03:35.36
RH: Yeah I stole a boat.
00:03:35.36\00:03:36.53
And I'm out on this boat
fishing and a storm comes up.
00:03:36.53\00:03:40.66
A wind is blowing, and
the water is coming over
00:03:40.66\00:03:42.90
the boat and here I
am black leather jacket,
00:03:42.90\00:03:46.36
skull blood
dripping over the skull,
00:03:46.36\00:03:48.36
beachcomber, real tough dude.
00:03:48.36\00:03:50.36
And I am in this
boat, no religion,
00:03:50.36\00:03:52.36
I mean, and then
all the sudden the
00:03:52.36\00:03:54.36
boat starts filling up
with water and so I'm trying to
00:03:54.36\00:03:56.36
bail it out with
my motorcycle boot.
00:03:56.36\00:03:58.36
The boat is going to go down.
00:03:58.36\00:03:59.36
And my brother
says "bail" I'm bailing,
00:03:59.36\00:04:02.13
and then he says "well
row", and so I'm rowing and the
00:04:02.13\00:04:04.13
tide changes and I fall down
on my knees on that boat and I
00:04:04.13\00:04:06.96
said, God get me in and I'll be
00:04:06.96\00:04:09.26
good.
00:04:09.26\00:04:10.50
God knew better than that.
00:04:10.50\00:04:12.23
But that was the expression
of a need within a human heart.
00:04:12.23\00:04:17.03
And God didn't weigh
that prayer upon whether I was
00:04:17.03\00:04:19.20
going to be good
or whether I was bad.
00:04:19.20\00:04:21.60
But he weighed it upon my
need and so He answered that
00:04:21.60\00:04:24.70
prayer.
00:04:24.70\00:04:25.70
JB: So you got out of there.

RH: Have you been in a storm
and the clouds ripped apart

and the sun comes through?

JB: Oh yeah RH:
Right on that boat,

and a speedboat was coming by,
00:04:31.66\00:04:33.66
saw our
predicament, towed us in.

I got my feet on the
ground and I forgot the prayer.

But that was the beginning.

You see, there
are no atheists in
00:04:39.13\00:04:41.13
sinking boats JB: Right,
00:04:41.13\00:04:42.86
RH: crashing planes.
00:04:42.86\00:04:43.30
JB: Sure.
00:04:43.30\00:04:44.33
RH: when death angel
moves around the heart there is
00:04:44.33\00:04:46.36
something instinctively
within the human nature.
00:04:46.36\00:04:49.53
Because to me that was
a very dramatic moment.

To me that was like an answer.
00:04:52.80\00:04:55.13
So I thought, wow,

if God can answer in
such a way to a gangbanger

in a stolen boat,
imagine what he does

to a believer on his
knees, opening his heart to God

as to a friend.

JB: Now when you knelt down
in that boat to pray were you

thinking flowery oratory
or were just thinking I got to
00:05:11.56\00:05:14.83
tell God what's on my mind.

RH: You just told him what's
bothering you right at that
00:05:16.06\00:05:18.50
moment.
00:05:18.50\00:05:19.50
You have to talk to
God like you do a friend.

We don't go yay,
nay, now, they, no,

we talk hey, hey
buddy I'm in a predicament

here, you are my
friend, would you help me?

Sometimes I get angry at God.

I get angry at God.

I can't understand
sometimes humans suffering.

JB: Is God okay with that?

Someone watching and
say, you shouldn't get angry

and saying you

that's disrespectful.

Is God ok with that?

RH: Well I think He is
because the prophets were.

One prophets said, Hey
God why you letting these

people come into our city
and rape our women and take our

children into slavery.

Throughout the history of
the bible we find men and women

at times calling
out to God in anger.

JB: Prayer ought
to be honest and real.

God understands it already.

He understands the
anger in our heart.

The only way you get rid
of anger is to express it.

Yeah, you don't suppress it.

So it's the same in your
prayer life you don't suppress

You tell Him, Hey God,

understand this, come on,

Sometimes I rejoice, I'm happy,

I laugh with God.

God has great sense of
humor, he made a giraffe,

he made me and I

and so you see,

You now, a friend is a friend

coming to a friend sharing

to be in a position,

it's nothing about a position
JB: You can be anywhere?

RH: Anywhere.

I talk about a place,
everyone should have a place.

It maybe a quite
place in your house,

it maybe out there in the woods,

maybe surrounded by woods.

You find a little
place, a grove where you pray.

That's a part of your growth,
your part of your spiritual

life.

And prayer is a
wonderful communion.

Hey, you
hassled all day long and

you go aside with
God and He listens,

you know, not superficially,

but he listens and he
hears and he answers you.

I learned from a
lovely Quaker lady once.

I was praying with her and
after I finished my prayer,

I was getting up
to go and she said,

oh no, we got to now listen.
00:07:33.93\00:07:35.93
And that revolutionized
my prayer experience.

We pray quick, we run.

Everything is quick.

I mean just, you know,
00:07:42.63\00:07:44.63
fast, fast, fast. Just listen.

And you will be surprised.

God will even
talk to you in a dream.

God will even wake
you up in the night.

JB: I know God did that for you.

is not the devil and

first of all that how

know it's from God is

because I am in
communion with Him.

I can sense the voice of
God, I can sense when it's God

convicting me, and
not Satan convicting me.

First of all, God
doesn't lie to me.

God doesn't flatter me.

I can sense his presence.

Also in the will of God I
can pray for things that is not

really in the will of God
and so I ask but it's not given.

I seek but it's not found, I
knock, the door is not opened.

And when that happens,
I realize that I begin to

analyze that what I am
asking or a see that it may be

selfish or maybe
the timing is not right.

JB: So you listen to God
and God is going to do what?

He will speak to you how?

How does God speak?

RH: Let me tell you
what happened to me.

I was sleeping one
night, and my wife says that

sometimes I sing in my
sleep, sometimes I preach
00:11:14.66\00:11:18.63
in my sleep.
00:11:18.63\00:11:19.63
This time I woke up
and I heard like a voice.
00:11:19.63\00:11:22.93
It was such a strong impression.
00:11:22.93\00:11:25.73
Get a colonoscopy.
00:11:25.73\00:11:26.73
Mercy, I said, a colonoscopy?
00:11:26.73\00:11:29.73
I thought it was a nightmare
I thought I had indigestion,
00:11:29.73\00:11:32.43
so I went back to sleep.
00:11:32.43\00:11:34.20
Two nights later,
same thing happened.
00:11:34.20\00:11:36.56
So I called my
doctor, I said Doc,
00:11:36.56\00:11:38.56
I need a colonoscopy,
he says, well, do you have
00:11:38.56\00:11:40.56
these symptoms, and
he named four or five
00:11:40.56\00:11:43.56
different symptoms.
00:11:43.56\00:11:44.56
I had no symptoms, I
mean I was jumping fences,
00:11:44.56\00:11:46.43
they are smaller now,
but I still jump fences.
00:11:46.43\00:11:47.86
I said no, no.
00:11:47.86\00:11:49.50
He said, well then,
00:11:49.50\00:11:50.50
why?
00:11:50.50\00:11:50.86
I said because the
Lord said I should have one.
00:11:50.86\00:11:52.43
He said, do you
have another reason,
00:11:52.43\00:11:53.56
I said, not a better reason.
00:11:53.56\00:11:55.46
And so they put me in
the hospital and did a
00:11:55.46\00:11:57.00
colonoscopy.
00:11:57.00\00:11:58.00
They found a very aggressive
cancer way above the appendix.
00:11:58.00\00:12:01.43
The doctor said, 99%
of the people that get
00:12:01.43\00:12:03.46
that colon cancer there die,
because by the time they get
00:12:03.46\00:12:06.70
symptoms it has
broken through the wall.
00:12:06.70\00:12:09.26
And once it breaks to the wall,
00:12:09.26\00:12:10.46
it is very dangerous.
00:12:10.46\00:12:12.80
So they cut out the piece,
took care of it 12 years ago
00:12:12.80\00:12:15.76
and I went to the oncologist
and he came out shaking his
00:12:15.76\00:12:19.16
head and he said Mr. Halverson,
I can't explain this, he said,
00:12:19.16\00:12:23.16
99% of the people that
get colon cancer there,
00:12:23.16\00:12:25.16
I have to give them heavy
dozes of chemo and radiation
00:12:25.16\00:12:27.16
and still they die.
00:12:27.16\00:12:28.16
I said, well do you
believe in miracles?
00:12:28.16\00:12:31.13
Doctor said, yeah I do.
00:12:31.13\00:12:33.13
And I shared the miracle.
00:12:33.13\00:12:34.33
To me it was a miracle.
00:12:34.33\00:12:35.76
That was a
personal answered prayer.
00:12:35.76\00:12:37.96
God had to wake
me up to talk to me,
00:12:37.96\00:12:40.16
and when you have a
relationship with God in that
00:12:40.16\00:12:42.16
way, God will talk to you.
00:12:42.16\00:12:44.16
Just listen.
00:12:44.16\00:12:45.43
I mean,
everything worked together
00:12:45.43\00:12:47.43
because as I walked in that way,
00:12:47.43\00:12:49.76
God kept fulfilling the dream.
00:12:49.76\00:12:53.33
And at 12 years I have
been free form colon cancer.
00:12:53.33\00:12:55.56
JB: And we thank God for that.
00:12:55.56\00:12:56.60
RH: Amen.

JB: So as you pray, as you pray,

what you are saying is you
get to understand the voice of

the Lord more and better,
you get to know whose voice

that is speaking
and you understand.

You know frankly, I
get asked by some people,
00:13:06.50\00:13:08.80
how am I going
to know is the Lord,

you know if you pray and
you get an impression to go jump

of the roof, it's
probably not the Lord.

But if you pray and the
impression is pray more or

help a little old lady or
whatever the case might be,

it's not that
difficult to figure out is it?

RH: No, isn't, that's right,

if it's towards an
experience to helping people,

of growing in
your spiritual life.

You know, the devil is not going

to tell you, Hey Ron,

let's grow spiritually today,
lets be a spiritual giant.

No, but you know that is the

people who are being harassed.

years old dies in my arms,

overdosed with drugs.

how can this happen?

How can I go beyond
just this superficial?

I was forced to pray.

I was forced to
really get into this prayer.

And then I began to see more
and more that this is a war.

This is a spiritual war.

the turf , the territory,

he takes
principalities, he takes powers.

He takes areas of
cities, whole areas,

whole neighborhoods,

satanic forces.

And I said, here I
am one lone evangelists

trying to war against this.

And I began to see more
and more of this battle.

And even as a pastor.

I had pastored a college
church and at first prayer

meeting there were 30 people.

I went home and I fell on
my face and I cried all night

long and prayed and said,
God you are dishonored here.
00:20:06.36\00:20:08.60
And then God brought
me a vision that prayer
00:20:08.60\00:20:12.13
that would be the
center of saving that church.
00:20:12.13\00:20:14.60
We went from 30
people and within a month we
00:20:14.60\00:20:18.60
were 1500 hundred.
00:20:18.60\00:20:19.60
And then for 5 years,
1500 people coming out to
00:20:19.60\00:20:22.26
pray and to prayer meetings,
because I had the vision that
00:20:22.26\00:20:26.90
we are at war, we are at battle.
00:20:26.90\00:20:28.90
And wouldn't you tell people
that and show people that?
00:20:28.90\00:20:31.56
Then we are going to
get in different stance.
00:20:31.56\00:20:33.56
The day of
picnic praying is over.
00:20:33.56\00:20:36.03
I mean we are in a battle.
00:20:36.03\00:20:37.70
In fact we should
know it above all.

Armageddon is not about a
battle way down in the end of
00:20:39.80\00:20:42.50
time in a little
valley called Megiddo.

It started in heaven,
Revelation 12 tells us that.

And Satan was cast out.

He came to garden and
turned him into a wilderness,

Jesus came to the wilderness
and turned it back into a garden

RH: And that's the
struggle between good and evil.

with them, you and me.

We are in that
struggle, is a personal battle.

JB: How do I take
prayer and use it as a weapon

in the spiritual
battle that I am in?

RH: First of all, I
think there are 3 principles

that we need in
victory in this battle.
00:21:10.33\00:21:14.83
One is the Blood.
00:21:14.83\00:21:16.76
He says, they overcame him
00:21:16.76\00:21:18.76
by the blood of the lamb.
00:21:18.76\00:21:19.76
Revelation, John writes,
00:21:19.76\00:21:21.76
his pen is dipped in the
red blood ink of Calvary when he
00:21:21.76\00:21:23.76
writes Revelation.
00:21:23.76\00:21:24.76
He says the blood of the
lamb, the testimony they bore,
00:21:24.76\00:21:26.76
and they would
not shrink from death.
00:21:26.76\00:21:28.76
But there is 3
things, the Blood.
00:21:28.76\00:21:30.70
And then God says,
put on the armor of God.
00:21:30.70\00:21:32.86
Before I get out of
the bed in the morning,

John, I place the blood in my
00:21:34.86\00:21:36.86
heart.

I pray for my family,
for those on my prayer list.

I place the
blood on their hearts.

Because that is the
beginning of deliverance.

You want deliverance.

How many watching this program,

wants deliverance?

It's first in the blood.

Then he says, put

the Devil can't penetrate

but the armor never wins

Armor is only defense.

put on the loin cloths,
and that was eye opening

to me, because the loin cloth

protects the reproductive organ.

You see, every
believer is supposed to

reproduce Christ.

You see, we are
not to be members,

we are to be disciples.

And that is to
disciple the lost,

to win the lost.

Jesus said, I've
come to seek and to save

that which is lost.

And now the
church is just, I mean,

it's a place to be entertained,
it's a place to come once

a week for an hour,
give God an hour and you'll

got to become a disciple.

And disciple comes
about through warfare.

He dresses in the armor of God.

He has the sword, the
only offensive weapon,

The sword of the Spirit
which is the Word of God.

RH: The two-edged sword,
the Old and New Testament.

It pierces the heart.

This is talking about a battle.

And then when I went
into these neighborhoods.

I go into neighborhoods where
you gotta duck behind cars,

they are shooting at each other.

I mean I go into the
barrios in Los Angeles,

and Brooklyn, and Harlem,
00:22:59.56\00:23:02.13
and I mean I got to carry my
Bible with me because if they

shoot me they got to go
through Genesis, Exodus,

Leviticus, Numbers.
00:23:08.00\00:23:11.00
I mean it's bad and
I'm saying to myself,
00:23:11.00\00:23:13.00
I got to go with the
sword, I can't conquer this with
00:23:13.00\00:23:15.00
sweet words, little homilies...
00:23:15.00\00:23:17.00
JB: So tell me how to
take this weapon and use it

practically.

I'm battling in my life.

I've got some problems.

There is something
in the word of God.
00:23:23.53\00:23:25.93
I got to take that
through prayer and use that

offensively to
drive out Satan from me.

Someone's got a
marriage difficulty,

lets say, marriage
is falling apart and
00:23:32.40\00:23:36.56
kids are in jeopardy.
00:23:36.56\00:23:37.56
Someone's got a drug problem.

What am I going to do with
prayer to use that offensively

as a weapon in that situation.

RH: Well, first of all,

you've got to let them
first know that you are going to
00:23:43.56\00:23:46.70
pray for them.

Then you've got to give
them the principles of their
00:23:47.70\00:23:50.23
personal prayer experience,
that they must put the blood
00:23:50.23\00:23:52.76
on their heart.
00:23:52.76\00:23:53.76
You see, they
gotta dress in the armor.

Before I get out
of bed in the morning,

put blood, dress
in the armor and then

he gives you the
third key that says,

give him praise from your lips.

You know, even
someone in church try to

squelch praise.
00:24:07.63\00:24:08.63
But praise, when
the devil hears you

singing a song,
or hears you quoting
00:24:10.63\00:24:12.63
a scripture, when
the devil hears that
00:24:12.63\00:24:14.63
he says, hey man
that guy is hot today
00:24:14.63\00:24:16.63
stay away from him.
00:24:16.63\00:24:17.63
You see, we got
to teach them that
00:24:17.63\00:24:19.63
principle.
00:24:19.63\00:24:20.63
We got to teach them
the principle that as soon
00:24:20.63\00:24:22.63
as the temptation
comes, to go to God and ask
00:24:22.63\00:24:24.63
for help.
00:24:24.63\00:24:25.63
At that moment we got to
teach them that they have
00:24:25.63\00:24:29.60
to hold on.
00:24:29.60\00:24:30.53
That it is not a quick fix.

It's not a quick fix.

My life has not been
a quick fix, has yours?

and then two other
things come up in my heart.

So we've got to teach
them continually to reach out

and continue holding
on, holding on for God.

And much marriage today
is because of selfishness,

and who deals more
with selfishness than God.

JB: That's right.

RH: So once I find out what
the need is with drug addicts,

the need is that
someone loves them.

I was in south Bronx,
and Fox street had the most
00:25:10.76\00:25:14.06
heroin addicts in the
60's than any other street
00:25:14.06\00:25:16.73
in the world.
00:25:16.73\00:25:17.73
And these boys came
to a meeting one night,
00:25:17.73\00:25:20.33
high on heroin, they
were main lining heroin.
00:25:20.33\00:25:23.23
They left the meeting
and as they left the meeting
00:25:23.23\00:25:25.93
I ran off the platform,
went out through the alley,
00:25:25.93\00:25:27.93
jumped and I met them
coming down the stairs,
00:25:27.93\00:25:29.93
they half high on heroin,
and they saw me and they said
00:25:29.93\00:25:32.26
wow man, you are in there,
00:25:32.26\00:25:34.36
and I said no I am out here,
because God loves you and I
00:25:34.36\00:25:36.96
love you.
00:25:36.96\00:25:38.16
And I said I wanted to say
goodbye and I want you to come
00:25:38.16\00:25:40.20
back.
00:25:40.20\00:25:41.20
And there on the street I
knelt with them and prayed for
00:25:41.20\00:25:43.26
those 4 boys, Heroin addicts,
00:25:43.26\00:25:45.26
main liners.
00:25:45.26\00:25:46.56
I prayed all that night,
I couldn't sleep that night.
00:25:46.56\00:25:49.40
The next night, they show up.
00:25:49.40\00:25:51.40
And the next
night, and the next night,
00:25:51.40\00:25:53.40
they come, and
when I asked people
00:25:53.40\00:25:54.90
to receive
Jesus in their hearts,

those four men came forward.
00:25:56.40\00:25:57.40
I go up in the
shooting gallery in South Bronx,
00:25:57.40\00:25:59.60
get this, kids
are laying around in
00:25:59.60\00:26:01.73
half stages, I find
my boys in the back.

And there they
were, they were ready.
00:26:05.23\00:26:07.23
You can't, I mean you
cannot philosophy, they did not

need more
theology, they need to know
00:26:09.66\00:26:13.26
that God loves them.

And I sat there with them
and I cried with them and I told

them God loves you and God
wants to take this from you.

And we talk about 5
day plan 10 day plan,

boys, three of them became
