What do Super Bowl winning quarterback Terry Bradshaw, 00:00:01.20\00:00:04.03 television personality David Letterman 00:00:04.03\00:00:06.83 and business tycoon T. Boone Pickens all have in common? 00:00:06.83\00:00:10.46 Well, apart from being tremendously successful 00:00:10.46\00:00:12.96 in their chosen careers, they've all had a serious battle 00:00:12.96\00:00:16.13 with depression. 00:00:16.13\00:00:18.03 Depression can be seriously debilitating, and people 00:00:18.03\00:00:21.23 of faith are not immune to its effects. 00:00:21.23\00:00:25.00 I've come to Weimar, California to speak with 00:00:25.00\00:00:27.23 Dr. Neil Nedley, the president of Nedley Health Solutions, 00:00:27.23\00:00:31.06 and an expert in the area of depression. 00:00:31.06\00:00:34.06 Does God have a way out of depression? 00:00:34.06\00:00:38.60 And what help does the Bible offer? 00:00:38.60\00:00:40.63 Today we find out. 00:00:40.63\00:00:41.90 Thank you for joining me on It Is Written. 00:00:41.90\00:00:52.06 >: It has stood the test of time. 00:00:52.06\00:00:56.93 God's book, the Bible. 00:00:56.93\00:01:01.86 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:01:01.86\00:01:06.73 It Is Written. 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.86 Sharing hope around the globe. 00:01:09.86\00:01:11.86 JB: Dr. Nedley, thanks so much for joining me today. 00:01:20.90\00:01:22.76 Appreciate it. 00:01:22.76\00:01:23.50 NN: It's great to be here. 00:01:23.50\00:01:24.70 JB: We're talking about a very, very serious subject 00:01:24.70\00:01:26.76 today, that of depression. 00:01:26.76\00:01:28.46 It affects people, it's no respecter of persons. 00:01:28.46\00:01:32.36 NN: Correct. 00:01:32.36\00:01:33.40 JB: If you're wealthy, not so wealthy, bright, not so 00:01:33.40\00:01:35.53 bright, male, female, doesn't matter your ethnic 00:01:35.53\00:01:37.43 background. 00:01:37.43\00:01:39.13 If you're a believer in God or not, you can still be 00:01:39.13\00:01:40.80 depressed. 00:01:40.80\00:01:42.13 NN: Exactly. 00:01:42.13\00:01:42.60 JB: Which is interesting, isn't it? 00:01:42.60\00:01:44.76 The Bible enjoins us to rejoice and be happy and in God's 00:01:44.76\00:01:46.50 presence there is joy, and yet there are many people 00:01:46.50\00:01:51.00 in church clinically depressed. 00:01:51.00\00:01:53.73 NN: Yeah. 00:01:53.73\00:01:54.70 JB: Before we talk about the right way out, what, 00:01:54.70\00:01:59.46 in your experience, are most people doing to treat 00:01:59.46\00:02:03.33 their depression? 00:02:03.33\00:02:04.33 NN: Well, the most common treatment is medication. 00:02:04.33\00:02:06.90 And well over $20 billion is spent in this country 00:02:06.90\00:02:11.06 on the medicines alone. 00:02:11.06\00:02:12.56 And many of these medicines are expensive. 00:02:12.56\00:02:16.26 There are all sorts of antidepressants out there, 00:02:16.26\00:02:18.76 and they're flying off shelves. 00:02:18.76\00:02:21.20 But they're not a cure-all. 00:02:21.20\00:02:23.36 They're not the fix. 00:02:23.36\00:02:24.43 JB: Is it true that antidepressants 00:02:24.43\00:02:25.93 are the largest selling classification of drugs? 00:02:25.93\00:02:28.23 NN: Correct, yes. 00:02:28.23\00:02:29.06 JB: Is it helping? 00:02:29.06\00:02:30.60 NN: Well, it helps 20% of them to the point where 00:02:30.60\00:02:33.33 they're no longer depressed. 00:02:33.33\00:02:35.86 JB: Two out of ten depressed people take medication 00:02:35.86\00:02:40.33 and essentially get over the depression. 00:02:40.33\00:02:42.46 NN: Correct. 00:02:42.46\00:02:43.20 JB: Two out of ten. 00:02:43.20\00:02:44.86 So eight out of ten not so much. 00:02:44.86\00:02:46.50 NN: Eight out ten, right. 00:02:46.50\00:02:47.60 In fact, three out of ten won't experience even 00:02:47.60\00:02:50.36 a slight improvement with the drugs. 00:02:50.36\00:02:54.36 Even a combination, if you put four antidepressants 00:02:54.36\00:02:57.36 on them, and raise the dose, they're still not going 00:02:57.36\00:03:00.16 to respond. 00:03:00.16\00:03:01.36 So three out of ten will have zero response to medication. 00:03:01.36\00:03:05.06 And then what's left in the middle are those who get 00:03:05.06\00:03:08.33 a slight or moderate response, but are still clinically 00:03:08.33\00:03:13.56 depressed and still suffering from it. 00:03:13.56\00:03:15.53 JB: Half of people taking medication for depression, 00:03:15.53\00:03:19.46 they're still depressed even though they're taking 00:03:19.46\00:03:20.93 the medication. 00:03:20.93\00:03:21.46 NN: Exactly. 00:03:21.46\00:03:22.23 JB: Now, I'm just thinking for the cynic who says, oh, 00:03:22.23\00:03:25.13 come on. 00:03:25.13\00:03:26.53 But this is statistically true. 00:03:26.53\00:03:28.73 NN: Oh, absolutely. 00:03:28.73\00:03:30.10 It's been shown, in fact, if anything, I'm stating things 00:03:30.10\00:03:33.93 more in favor of the pharmaceuticals 00:03:33.93\00:03:38.30 than the statistics are actually showing. 00:03:38.30\00:03:40.30 So I'm quoting drug company data. 00:03:40.30\00:03:42.86 This is the data from the drug companies themselves 00:03:42.86\00:03:45.26 that I'm quoting. 00:03:45.26\00:03:46.46 JB: You got this data from what the drug companies say. 00:03:46.46\00:03:49.50 NN: From the drug companies, yeah. 00:03:49.50\00:03:50.80 So that's why I'm saying, if anything I'm slighting 00:03:50.80\00:03:52.53 it toward the drug companies. 00:03:52.53\00:03:53.73 There are some studies out here that indicate that 00:03:53.73\00:03:56.00 antidepressants virtually help no one. 00:03:56.00\00:04:00.80 Now, I don't believe that personally because 00:04:00.80\00:04:03.16 as a doctor I've prescribed antidepressants and I've seen 00:04:03.16\00:04:05.66 their effect in some people in a positive way. 00:04:05.66\00:04:08.50 But in reality, I've also realized that this is not 00:04:08.50\00:04:12.73 the cure. 00:04:12.73\00:04:14.50 This may help some people, but there are far better 00:04:14.50\00:04:17.40 approaches to treating depression, with far less 00:04:17.40\00:04:21.50 side effects, and they're far cheaper. 00:04:21.50\00:04:23.73 JB: What are some of the side effects people are getting 00:04:23.73\00:04:25.13 from medication, just quickly? 00:04:25.13\00:04:26.80 NN: Well, weight gain is one of the big ones. 00:04:26.80\00:04:29.73 And so it tends to cause weight gain, it tends to cause 00:04:29.73\00:04:32.30 them to have an "I don't care" attitude. 00:04:32.30\00:04:35.86 So that when something happens in their life, 00:04:35.86\00:04:38.10 like their spouse dies, they feel like they should cry 00:04:38.10\00:04:40.70 at the funeral and care about this, but it's kind of like, 00:04:40.70\00:04:43.33 eh, oh well. 00:04:43.33\00:04:44.50 And that's not a healthy thing. 00:04:44.50\00:04:47.73 It also increases impulsiveness at first when 00:04:47.73\00:04:51.13 you start taking it. 00:04:51.13\00:04:52.06 And that's why they have black box warnings on them 00:04:52.06\00:04:54.66 that say if someone is suicidal, watch out because this 00:04:54.66\00:04:58.76 will increase their impulsiveness, and suicide 00:04:58.76\00:05:03.70 is often an impulsive act. 00:05:03.70\00:05:05.50 And so here the person who's suicidal needs to get better, 00:05:05.50\00:05:09.56 but the drug that they're utilizing might tide them 00:05:09.56\00:05:12.03 over the edge, and it's a very difficult situation for 00:05:12.03\00:05:15.93 caregivers or physicians to know what to do with these 00:05:15.93\00:05:18.10 individuals when they're to that point. 00:05:18.10\00:05:22.23 JB: But there is a safe way, there is a healthy way to treat 00:05:22.23\00:05:24.16 depression, even to help people get out of depression. 00:05:24.16\00:05:28.20 We're going to talk about that in just a moment. 00:05:28.20\00:05:29.73 What are some other things that people do in terms 00:05:29.73\00:05:31.53 of self-medication? 00:05:31.53\00:05:32.73 NN: Oh well, chocolate, you know, is a big one. 00:05:32.73\00:05:35.96 The soda pops, if you just count the cans of soda pop 00:05:35.96\00:05:38.46 leaving a grocery store. 00:05:38.46\00:05:40.33 Carbohydrates actually not only taste good but they 00:05:40.33\00:05:42.93 transiently increase serotonin levels. 00:05:42.93\00:05:45.43 Unfortunately, there's a nadir, so they drop it below 00:05:45.43\00:05:48.46 neutral afterward. 00:05:48.46\00:05:50.20 JB: Can you explain serotonin for me? 00:05:50.20\00:05:52.16 NN: Well, serotonin is a brain chemical that actually elevates 00:05:52.16\00:05:54.86 mood and helps us to concentrate better, and helps us 00:05:54.86\00:05:59.66 to actually sleep better as well. 00:05:59.66\00:06:02.66 JB: Which means that if I get a hit of something that 00:06:02.66\00:06:04.36 increases my serotonin level, I just feel a whole lot 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.36 better. 00:06:06.36\00:06:07.20 NN: You feel better, yeah. 00:06:07.20\00:06:08.43 And so these people, by self-medicating, they 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.33 actually do feel a little better. 00:06:10.33\00:06:12.30 They're altering some of their brain chemistry. 00:06:12.30\00:06:14.33 But the self-medicated routes, be it alcohol 00:06:14.33\00:06:17.50 or chocolate or cocaine or pornography, 00:06:17.50\00:06:22.70 these self-medicated routes actually produce a greater 00:06:22.70\00:06:26.70 nadir, in other words, a greater drop, 00:06:26.70\00:06:29.66 the more often we utilize it. 00:06:29.66\00:06:31.26 So first people do it to try to experience pleasure. 00:06:31.26\00:06:35.66 But afterward they're not doing it to experience 00:06:35.66\00:06:39.93 pleasure, they're just trying to do it to get up to neutral. 00:06:39.93\00:06:42.76 And in between times, even though there's nothing sad 00:06:42.76\00:06:45.23 around them, they feel sad, as a result of their 00:06:45.23\00:06:48.63 self-medication. 00:06:48.63\00:06:49.90 JB: Depression's a massive, massive issue. 00:06:49.90\00:06:51.90 I know you've described it as an epidemic. 00:06:51.90\00:06:54.23 NN: Yeah. 00:06:54.23\00:06:55.03 JB: One in ten Americans are currently depressed. 00:06:55.03\00:06:58.00 Research suggests that one in two women may experience 00:06:58.00\00:07:02.90 depression in their life. 00:07:02.90\00:07:04.50 NN: At some point in their life. 00:07:04.50\00:07:06.13 JB: That's just a dramatic figure. 00:07:06.13\00:07:08.93 Now, God has a way out. 00:07:08.93\00:07:10.43 And I'm going to be speaking with Dr. Nedley about that 00:07:10.43\00:07:13.66 way out in just a moment. 00:07:13.66\00:07:18.66 JB: It Is Written is dedicated to sharing the Gospel 00:07:18.66\00:07:20.80 around the world. 00:07:20.80\00:07:22.30 To discover more about It Is Written, I invite you 00:07:22.30\00:07:24.50 to visit our website, ItIsWritten.com, and browse 00:07:24.50\00:07:28.26 the dozens of pages that describe what we do 00:07:28.26\00:07:30.96 and how we do it. 00:07:30.96\00:07:32.26 Let's get to know each other better. 00:07:32.26\00:07:33.80 Visit our website, ItIsWritten.com, today. 00:07:33.80\00:07:38.50 JB: I'm with Dr. Neil Nedley today, president of Nedley 00:07:38.50\00:07:41.96 Health Solutions and the founder of the Nedley Clinic, 00:07:41.96\00:07:46.30 and the author of the book called "Depression: 00:07:46.30\00:07:47.26 The Way Out." 00:07:47.26\00:07:48.50 We've been speaking about depression, it's causes 00:07:48.50\00:07:52.50 and today its cures. 00:07:52.50\00:07:54.03 Dr. Nedley, what's the way out of depression? 00:07:54.03\00:07:57.13 I don't think this is a simple, single, pithy answer. 00:07:57.13\00:08:00.66 This might be a multi-faceted answer. 00:08:00.66\00:08:02.66 But walk us through the journey. 00:08:02.66\00:08:04.53 Obviously, this is a very brief walk. 00:08:04.53\00:08:07.03 The way out of depression, where should a person 00:08:07.03\00:08:09.23 be looking? 00:08:09.23\00:08:10.00 NN: Well, first of all they need to try to find out 00:08:10.00\00:08:11.73 the underlying causes in them. 00:08:11.73\00:08:12.76 And so that's where we start with the individual. 00:08:12.76\00:08:16.93 We find out, do they have frontal lobe causes, do they 00:08:16.93\00:08:19.83 have lifestyle causes, nutritional causes? 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.43 What's going on in their life in regard to their thought 00:08:22.43\00:08:25.33 process? 00:08:25.33\00:08:26.43 Are there distorted thoughts there? 00:08:26.43\00:08:28.06 And of course, for the vast majority of people 00:08:28.06\00:08:29.36 with depression, most of those are a major issue. 00:08:29.36\00:08:33.76 And so we start them out on a pathway. 00:08:33.76\00:08:36.13 The first thing we start them out on is a regular exercise 00:08:36.13\00:08:39.90 program. 00:08:39.90\00:08:41.93 We want them to exercise ideally 60 minutes a day. 00:08:41.93\00:08:47.10 It can be divided up into a couple of sessions. 00:08:47.10\00:08:50.26 But regular aerobic exercise helps depression, and that's 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.96 our first step with them. 00:08:53.96\00:08:56.10 We also, as part of that, try to get them out into light. 00:08:56.10\00:09:00.73 Light therapy actually helps depression. 00:09:00.73\00:09:05.20 And if they can't get into life because of their job 00:09:05.20\00:09:08.13 and it's wintertime, then they need to get a medical-grade 00:09:08.13\00:09:11.10 light box and actually experience the simulated blue 00:09:11.10\00:09:15.16 sky light, which is the best type of wavelength light 00:09:15.16\00:09:19.43 to help with depression. 00:09:19.43\00:09:21.10 JB: We're talking about a debilitating, disabling 00:09:21.10\00:09:24.93 condition, depression. 00:09:24.93\00:09:26.43 I've asked you the way out, and the first two things 00:09:26.43\00:09:29.76 you tell me are exercise and sunlight. 00:09:29.76\00:09:32.40 Now, that's pretty simple. 00:09:32.40\00:09:34.66 NN: It's pretty simple. 00:09:34.66\00:09:35.56 JB: All right. 00:09:35.56\00:09:36.86 I'm not exactly sure what you're going to say next, 00:09:36.86\00:09:39.26 but I think we're seeing a pattern here. 00:09:39.26\00:09:41.20 So what would be the next thing you'd recommend? 00:09:41.20\00:09:43.53 NN: Well, the next thing we would recommend is getting 00:09:43.53\00:09:46.06 on a regular schedule with regular sleep/wake times. 00:09:46.06\00:09:49.73 And ideally, early to bed, early to rise. 00:09:49.73\00:09:53.20 And ideally, up at 6:00 a.m. 00:09:53.20\00:09:55.36 or maybe a little before and getting that light therapy, 00:09:55.36\00:09:59.20 first thing in the morning. 00:09:59.20\00:10:00.90 That's a crucia role. 00:10:00.90\00:10:02.76 Then next we're going to deal with the food that you're 00:10:02.76\00:10:06.73 eating. 00:10:06.73\00:10:08.10 We're going to try to get you on a diet that's higher 00:10:08.10\00:10:10.86 in tryptophan, higher in tyrosine. 00:10:10.86\00:10:14.13 JB: What's tryptophan? 00:10:14.13\00:10:15.23 NN: Tryptophan is an amino acid that is turn into 00:10:15.23\00:10:18.90 serotonin in the brain. 00:10:18.90\00:10:20.50 JB: What's the other one? 00:10:20.50\00:10:22.26 NN: Tyrosine is another amino acid, it's turned into 00:10:22.26\00:10:24.40 norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. 00:10:24.40\00:10:27.46 JB: People talk about brain food. 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.46 Do you believe in it? 00:10:29.46\00:10:30.36 NN: Absolutely. 00:10:30.36\00:10:31.83 JB: So the diet's going to look like what? 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.36 NN: Well, the diet is going to be more plant based. 00:10:34.36\00:10:37.26 The plant-based foods tend to be higher in the natural 00:10:37.26\00:10:41.03 carbohydrates that get the tryptophan and tyrosine 00:10:41.03\00:10:44.63 into the brain. 00:10:44.63\00:10:45.73 We're also going to be emphasizing foods higher 00:10:45.73\00:10:48.30 in Omega 3, foods like spinach and walnut, flax seed, 00:10:48.30\00:10:55.16 chia seeds and almonds. 00:10:55.16\00:10:58.13 Green soybeans. 00:10:58.13\00:11:00.56 JB: I'm going to challenge you just a little bit here. 00:11:00.56\00:11:02.43 I'm just wondering if someone's going, eh. 00:11:02.43\00:11:04.40 But hang on a minute. 00:11:04.40\00:11:05.96 What would you do to come back from depression 00:11:05.96\00:11:09.70 if you were suffering from depression? 00:11:09.70\00:11:11.50 This doesn't sound like a terrible cross to have 00:11:11.50\00:11:13.40 to carry, changing your diet like that. 00:11:13.40\00:11:15.60 NN: Right, well, and actually the food can be quite tasty. 00:11:15.60\00:11:18.16 JB: Sure, no question. 00:11:18.16\00:11:19.46 NN: In fact, in our book that you mentioned, 00:11:19.46\00:11:21.30 we have the recipes in there. 00:11:21.30\00:11:22.90 And the people who come to our program, 00:11:22.90\00:11:25.60 the first day they like it. 00:11:25.60\00:11:27.86 So tasty food can actually be healthy if we train the cook. 00:11:27.86\00:11:31.53 JB: Absolutely. 00:11:31.53\00:11:32.33 So if you can kind of eat your way to good health, 00:11:32.33\00:11:35.90 to depression, and I'm sure it's not just diet. 00:11:35.90\00:11:39.10 This is one thing of a number of effects. 00:11:39.10\00:11:41.63 But that means that people are kind of eating 00:11:41.63\00:11:44.73 their way into depression. 00:11:44.73\00:11:45.83 NN: Oh, absolutely. 00:11:45.83\00:11:47.43 Yeah, the fast food industry, where it's high in fat, high 00:11:47.43\00:11:50.30 in protein, virtually no carbohydrates, that actually 00:11:50.30\00:11:56.10 is going to lead to depression in many people. 00:11:56.10\00:11:58.63 I mean, if they have enough hits. 00:11:58.63\00:12:00.33 Again, nutrition is just one of ten different hit 00:12:00.33\00:12:03.33 categories. 00:12:03.33\00:12:04.23 JB: And if you have how many of those hit categories? 00:12:04.23\00:12:06.03 NN: Four. 00:12:06.03\00:12:07.13 Four out of ten. 00:12:07.13\00:12:08.26 JB: Okay, then you're in danger of developing 00:12:08.26\00:12:10.66 depression. 00:12:10.66\00:12:11.86 NN: Exactly. 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.23 JB: So eating well is a key to overcoming depression. 00:12:13.23\00:12:16.03 NN: Eating well, a major key. 00:12:16.03\00:12:17.23 JB: What else? 00:12:17.23\00:12:19.40 NN: Another key is, and this is after we do the nutrition 00:12:19.40\00:12:22.80 and the lifestyle. 00:12:22.80\00:12:24.80 In fact, there's a couple of other things I should mention 00:12:24.80\00:12:26.83 in that. 00:12:26.83\00:12:27.86 Adequate hydration. 00:12:27.86\00:12:28.96 Just drinking enough water. 00:12:28.96\00:12:30.56 JB: Another very, very simple thing. 00:12:30.56\00:12:33.00 NN: Right. 00:12:33.00\00:12:34.30 And it's pretty powerful in regard to what it does 00:12:34.30\00:12:36.73 to brain chemistry. 00:12:36.73\00:12:37.83 JB: Why? 00:12:37.83\00:12:39.73 Why is water so crucial? 00:12:39.73\00:12:40.66 NN: Well, water is crucial because our neurotransmitters 00:12:40.66\00:12:43.56 actually communicate with the neurons 00:12:43.56\00:12:48.20 through a fluid medium. 00:12:48.20\00:12:50.03 And if there isn't enough hydration there, 00:12:50.03\00:12:54.13 the communication system in the brain gets gummed up, 00:12:54.13\00:12:56.96 essentially, that's kind of the JB: The layman's term. 00:12:56.96\00:12:59.96 NN: Basic way to describe it. 00:12:59.96\00:13:01.93 So yeah, adequate hydration, 6 to 8 glasses of water a day 00:13:01.93\00:13:04.43 minimum. 00:13:04.43\00:13:05.63 JB: A lot of people aren't getting that, right? 00:13:05.63\00:13:07.83 NN: That's right. 00:13:07.83\00:13:09.03 JB: How about, well, I drink plenty of soda, 00:13:09.03\00:13:12.26 isn't that good enough? 00:13:12.26\00:13:13.90 No, that doesn't qualify, right? 00:13:13.90\00:13:16.00 NN: No, actually, none of those qualify, the studies show. 00:13:16.00\00:13:19.46 All the rest are water substitutes and are not 00:13:19.46\00:13:21.93 the same. 00:13:21.93\00:13:22.96 JB: So we're not going to be thinking that some sort of soda 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.50 or caffeinated stuff is a water substitute. 00:13:26.50\00:13:29.33 NN: Or even dairy, yeah. 00:13:29.33\00:13:30.63 JB: Okay, not even there. 00:13:30.63\00:13:31.93 So it's gotta be water water. 00:13:31.93\00:13:33.30 NN: It's gotta be water. 00:13:33.30\00:13:34.10 And then also an important element is hydrotherapy. 00:13:34.10\00:13:37.23 In other words, hot and cold treatments. 00:13:37.23\00:13:42.90 We call that natural shockwave treatments 00:13:42.90\00:13:45.70 for those who are severely depressed. 00:13:45.70\00:13:48.90 It actually, in our experience, works as good as the ECT, 00:13:48.90\00:13:52.10 the shockwave treatments, without you having to get 00:13:52.10\00:13:54.70 general anesthesia and seizures and lose your 00:13:54.70\00:13:57.40 memory and things like that. 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.30 And so we describe how to do that in our materials, 00:13:59.30\00:14:02.46 but that can be a good starter. 00:14:02.46\00:14:05.66 And so we put people on that part first, and then we lead 00:14:05.66\00:14:11.03 them into analyzing their distorted thoughts. 00:14:11.03\00:14:14.40 And that's when we get to some of the crux 00:14:14.40\00:14:17.16 of the matter, so to speak. 00:14:17.16\00:14:18.50 There are 10 commandments in the Bible, and there are 00:14:18.50\00:14:22.10 10 different ways of distorted thinking. 00:14:22.10\00:14:24.53 And so we teach the individual, once they get the spa-- 00:14:24.53\00:14:27.23 we call the first part the spa experience. 00:14:27.23\00:14:30.73 Once they get that spa experience, then their 00:14:30.73\00:14:33.06 circulation in their brain is good enough where they can 00:14:33.06\00:14:35.83 start analyzing their thoughts for distortion. 00:14:35.83\00:14:38.33 Things like overgeneralizing, like Elijah said, I'm the 00:14:38.33\00:14:42.06 only one who hasn't bowed the knee to Baal. 00:14:42.06\00:14:44.90 JB: So what you've got are people who are depressed, 00:14:44.90\00:14:46.70 they're not thinking right. 00:14:46.70\00:14:48.26 You create an environment where the thoughts are moving 00:14:48.26\00:14:50.96 freer and more healthfully, and now they can do some 00:14:50.96\00:14:54.06 healthy self-analysis, look at what the problems 00:14:54.06\00:14:55.96 really are. 00:14:55.96\00:14:57.03 NN: Exactly. 00:14:57.03\00:14:58.26 And that's a very crucial, that will enhance frontal 00:14:58.26\00:15:01.23 lobe function. 00:15:01.23\00:15:02.60 Just the analysis itself, of seeing if there 00:15:02.60\00:15:06.16 is a distorted thought and then correcting that distorted 00:15:06.16\00:15:08.06 thought will actually enhance frontal lobe activity 00:15:08.06\00:15:10.66 and will help the individual recover. 00:15:10.66\00:15:12.93 JB: Now, tell me again what's so important about the frontal 00:15:12.93\00:15:14.93 lobe. 00:15:14.93\00:15:16.43 NN: Well, the frontal lobe is the seat of spirituality, 00:15:16.43\00:15:18.60 morality and the will. 00:15:18.60\00:15:20.23 The will means it's our decision maker. 00:15:20.23\00:15:23.23 So it's actually the area that we make decisions, 00:15:23.23\00:15:26.13 we provide analysis. 00:15:26.13\00:15:27.83 It really gives us the ability to accomplish advanced planning 00:15:27.83\00:15:30.43 and thinking. 00:15:30.43\00:15:32.56 JB: If you have the lifestyle practices in your life that 00:15:32.56\00:15:34.73 are messing with your frontal lobe capacity, you simply 00:15:34.73\00:15:36.93 can't make the decisions. 00:15:36.93\00:15:38.23 NN: Absolutely, yeah. 00:15:38.23\00:15:39.53 It's why depressed people tend to get more depressed, 00:15:39.53\00:15:42.20 because their decision-making ability is down. 00:15:42.20\00:15:44.66 So they end up suffering from those complications. 00:15:44.66\00:15:46.93 JB: Okay, so we got to where people are analyzing thoughts 00:15:46.93\00:15:49.13 and learning to make better decisions and so forth. 00:15:49.13\00:15:51.33 NN: Yes, a crucial element. 00:15:51.33\00:15:52.73 And also a crucial element that helps with that 00:15:52.73\00:15:55.16 is the spiritual part. 00:15:55.16\00:15:56.36 The reading of Proverbs, for instance, or the listening 00:15:56.36\00:16:03.60 to music like King Saul was listening to, you know, 00:16:03.60\00:16:08.26 the soft harp music or soft classical music that can help 00:16:08.26\00:16:12.70 to direct our thoughts can be helpful and can enhance 00:16:12.70\00:16:16.10 frontal lobe function. 00:16:16.10\00:16:17.86 And so we utilize that. 00:16:17.86\00:16:19.00 We utilize what we call cognitive behavioral therapy, 00:16:19.00\00:16:21.63 which is the analysis of the thoughts. 00:16:21.63\00:16:24.23 We utilize the type of music that's been shown in controlled 00:16:24.23\00:16:27.76 trials to help with depression recovery. 00:16:27.76\00:16:31.66 Interestingly, it's the same type of music that a lot 00:16:31.66\00:16:34.66 of hymns are composed from in the church. 00:16:34.66\00:16:38.90 And then on top of that, we then provide the spiritual 00:16:38.90\00:16:44.90 material that can also help enhance frontal lobe 00:16:44.90\00:16:48.90 function. 00:16:48.90\00:16:49.90 JB: And a person goes through this process and implements 00:16:49.90\00:16:52.16 these changes in their lives, I've seen people helped 00:16:52.16\00:16:56.70 dramatically by this. 00:16:56.70\00:16:58.40 NN: Absolutely. 00:16:58.40\00:16:59.96 I mean, in just 10 days. 00:16:59.96\00:17:01.56 We run 10-day programs for treatment-resistant 00:17:01.56\00:17:04.63 depression. 00:17:04.63\00:17:06.26 And when the relatives come 10 days later, often they 00:17:06.26\00:17:10.03 will break out and cry and they'll look at us and say, 00:17:10.03\00:17:12.63 "What did you do?" 00:17:12.63\00:17:14.36 I mean, just looking at them they can tell immediately 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.96 that things are far better and they can see life return, 00:17:16.96\00:17:21.83 and energy. 00:17:21.83\00:17:25.03 One of the wonderful things that happens that we document 00:17:25.03\00:17:28.86 in our program, their emotional intelligence, in just 10 days, 00:17:28.86\00:17:31.76 goes to the top 20 percentile in the nation. 00:17:31.76\00:17:36.16 So they actually have better emotional intelligence 00:17:36.16\00:17:39.26 than people who've never been depressed. 00:17:39.26\00:17:41.26 And emotional intelligence has more to do with their 00:17:41.26\00:17:43.56 future success in life than any other factor. 00:17:43.56\00:17:46.76 So the sky's the limit for these people. 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.06 JB: No drugs needed. 00:17:49.06\00:17:50.06 NN: No drugs needed. 00:17:50.06\00:17:51.06 JB: No messy side effects. 00:17:51.06\00:17:52.46 NN: That's right, exactly. 00:17:52.46\00:17:53.53 JB: God's way's always the right way, isn't it? 00:17:53.53\00:17:55.26 NN: Absolutely. 00:17:55.26\00:17:56.26 JB: God's way is the right way, and God does have 00:17:56.26\00:17:59.66 a way out. 00:17:59.66\00:18:00.26 What's so important about this is that depression is so 00:18:00.26\00:18:02.83 debilitating, it complicates lives on many, many lives, 00:18:02.83\00:18:06.66 and it has a seriously deleterious effect on 00:18:06.66\00:18:10.73 a person's relationship with God. 00:18:10.73\00:18:12.73 And we don't want that, and God doesn't want that 00:18:12.73\00:18:14.33 either. 00:18:14.33\00:18:15.93 I'll be back with a few more thoughts on this, on depression 00:18:15.93\00:18:18.13 and its cures, with Dr. Neil Nedley in just 00:18:18.13\00:18:20.03 a moment. 00:18:20.03\00:18:23.73 >: In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says, "It is written, man 00:18:23.73\00:18:27.46 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds 00:18:27.46\00:18:31.13 from the mouth of God." 00:18:31.13\00:18:33.53 "Every Word" is a one-minute, Bible-based daily devotional 00:18:33.53\00:18:36.33 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 00:18:36.33\00:18:39.40 especially for busy people like you. 00:18:39.40\00:18:43.20 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks or watch it 00:18:43.20\00:18:45.33 online every day on our website, itiswritten.com. 00:18:45.33\00:18:48.90 Receive a daily spiritual boost, watch "Every Word." 00:18:48.90\00:18:52.43 You'll be glad you did. 00:18:52.43\00:18:56.80 JB: I'm talking about depression today with 00:18:56.80\00:18:58.96 Dr. Neil Nedley of the Nedley Clinic, president of Nedley 00:18:58.96\00:19:02.63 Health Solutions, a man who has been successfully 00:19:02.63\00:19:04.70 treating people with depression for many, many years. 00:19:04.70\00:19:07.26 Dr. Nedley, Christians suffer depression. 00:19:07.26\00:19:10.33 NN: Yes, absolutely they can. 00:19:10.33\00:19:12.83 People from all faiths can suffer from depression, 00:19:12.83\00:19:16.56 as well as people of no faith. 00:19:16.56\00:19:18.13 JB: Well, why that's significant is because, 00:19:18.13\00:19:20.13 you know, Christians are meant to be happy and Christians 00:19:20.13\00:19:22.23 are meant to be full of joy, and enjoy the Lord 00:19:22.23\00:19:24.30 as your strength. 00:19:24.30\00:19:25.60 Do you find that certain types of Christians suffer 00:19:25.60\00:19:28.40 depression more or less than other types of Christians? 00:19:28.40\00:19:30.13 NN: Yeah, this has been well studied. 00:19:30.13\00:19:33.06 Duke University found that the denominations that have 00:19:33.06\00:19:38.26 the least rates of depression are the fundamentalist 00:19:38.26\00:19:41.46 denominations, ones that believe in the Word of God, 00:19:41.46\00:19:45.63 for instance, and believe that God has a plan for their 00:19:45.63\00:19:50.33 lives and speaks to them through his Word. 00:19:50.33\00:19:56.93 That would describe the fundamentalists, and those 00:19:56.93\00:20:01.76 have less depression than others. 00:20:01.76\00:20:05.73 JB: Now, depression, I've found, there's a bit 00:20:05.73\00:20:10.36 of a stigma attached to it. 00:20:10.36\00:20:12.73 I don't know whether society has stigmatized it, 00:20:12.73\00:20:15.36 or whether people just feel that way. 00:20:15.36\00:20:17.96 Is that true? 00:20:17.96\00:20:19.06 NN: Well, there is a stigma. 00:20:19.06\00:20:20.06 A lot of people with depression don't want anyone else to know 00:20:20.06\00:20:22.36 about it. 00:20:22.36\00:20:24.16 They're picking up their pharmaceuticals and making 00:20:24.16\00:20:27.66 sure no one else knows about it, etc. It turns out people 00:20:27.66\00:20:31.26 do know about it. 00:20:31.26\00:20:32.16 They think they're hiding it, but in reality you can't hide 00:20:32.16\00:20:34.90 it when you're working and your living in families, 00:20:34.90\00:20:37.60 etc. The depression is going to manifest itself in multiple 00:20:37.60\00:20:41.06 ways. 00:20:41.06\00:20:42.66 But because of that stigma, they have a reservation 00:20:42.66\00:20:46.83 to really go out and try to seek treatment, or come to a program 00:20:46.83\00:20:49.83 like a depression recovery program in their community, 00:20:49.83\00:20:52.76 for fear that they're going to be seen. 00:20:52.76\00:20:56.06 But what I've noticed is, when they recover from their 00:20:56.06\00:20:59.13 depression completely, and that joy returns, they have 00:20:59.13\00:21:03.23 no problem telling people how depressed they actually were. 00:21:03.23\00:21:07.33 And then the stigma is gone. 00:21:07.33\00:21:09.10 So if you have that stigma, the best way to take care 00:21:09.10\00:21:12.70 of it is, get the treatment that's going to cure it, 00:21:12.70\00:21:18.23 and then you don't have to worry about the stigma, and then 00:21:18.23\00:21:20.56 you can own up to it. 00:21:20.56\00:21:22.16 JB: God has been curing depression for millennia, 00:21:22.16\00:21:25.43 hasn't he? 00:21:25.43\00:21:26.36 NN: Yes. 00:21:26.36\00:21:27.36 JB: Give me an example from the Bible. 00:21:27.36\00:21:28.86 NN: Well, Elijah, when he was depressed, angels came 00:21:28.86\00:21:31.83 and fed him food. 00:21:31.83\00:21:33.20 I think there was some flax seed in that food. 00:21:33.20\00:21:36.46 That was food to boost the tryptophan and the tyrosine. 00:21:36.46\00:21:41.13 Exercise was part of Elijah's program. 00:21:41.13\00:21:43.96 And light therapy, Elijah, like a lot of depressed 00:21:43.96\00:21:46.63 people, he just wanted to be in the cave, in the dark. 00:21:46.63\00:21:49.16 And God had to produce earthquakes and fires 00:21:49.16\00:21:52.03 and, "Get out of the cave, Elijah, 00:21:52.03\00:21:55.53 you need to be in the light." 00:21:55.53\00:21:56.63 And then he came and dialogued with him, after he did 00:21:56.63\00:21:58.96 all those things, then he gave him the cognitive behavioral 00:21:58.96\00:22:01.76 therapy, and asked him, "What doest thou here?" 00:22:01.76\00:22:04.53 And Elijah began to talk, and the Lord began to correct 00:22:04.53\00:22:06.70 his distorted thought. 00:22:06.70\00:22:08.60 JB: Interesting. 00:22:08.60\00:22:10.10 NN: Same type of principles that we utilize today. 00:22:10.10\00:22:13.03 JB: What other factors play into this many-headed monster 00:22:13.03\00:22:16.93 called depression? 00:22:16.93\00:22:18.13 NN: You know, one of them that's very characteristic 00:22:18.13\00:22:22.30 is pride. 00:22:22.30\00:22:23.40 It's actually a magnification of self. 00:22:23.40\00:22:26.93 When people experience the distorted thought of 00:22:26.93\00:22:29.93 self-inflated pride, they are setting themselves 00:22:29.93\00:22:34.73 up for wounded pride. 00:22:34.73\00:22:36.83 And then with that wounded pride they've got the expose 00:22:36.83\00:22:40.70 for depression, anxiety and other symptoms. 00:22:40.70\00:22:44.23 That's what led to Saul's issue. 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.63 He had the pride, and when the women sang, "Saul has 00:22:47.63\00:22:52.43 slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands," 00:22:52.43\00:22:55.53 it was wounded pride, and it set him up into 00:22:55.53\00:22:59.26 that whole process. 00:22:59.26\00:23:01.00 And the Lord knows how to deal with that as well. 00:23:01.00\00:23:03.90 JB: That reminds me of another story in the Bible, 00:23:03.90\00:23:06.60 the story of Nebuchadnezzar in the book of Daniel. 00:23:06.60\00:23:09.00 Is this not great Babylon that I have built? 00:23:09.00\00:23:10.70 And next thing you know he's out eating grass like an ox. 00:23:10.70\00:23:13.20 NN: Right. 00:23:13.20\00:23:14.20 Well, you know, and the interesting thing, 00:23:14.20\00:23:15.76 his pride was so severe, he had been impressed by what the Lord 00:23:15.76\00:23:19.20 was doing multiple times, but not changed. 00:23:19.20\00:23:22.20 Impressed but not changed. 00:23:22.20\00:23:25.20 And so the Lord had to get to the root of his problem, 00:23:25.20\00:23:27.86 which was his pride. 00:23:27.86\00:23:28.80 And his pride was so severe it took more than a 10-day 00:23:28.80\00:23:30.90 program. 00:23:30.90\00:23:32.80 It was a multi-year program, but it was the same type 00:23:32.80\00:23:35.30 of principles. 00:23:35.30\00:23:36.30 It was a plant-based, vegetarian diet that 00:23:36.30\00:23:38.96 Nebuchadnezzar was put on. 00:23:38.96\00:23:40.56 There was exercise that was part of it. 00:23:40.56\00:23:42.50 When you read Nebuchadnezzar's testimony, 00:23:42.50\00:23:45.00 hydrotherapy was part of the program. 00:23:45.00\00:23:47.70 The sleep/wake cycles were there, and then in the end, 00:23:47.70\00:23:50.83 the cognitive behavioral therapy to get rid 00:23:50.83\00:23:52.50 of the pride. 00:23:52.50\00:23:53.83 JB: So God knows the way out of depression. 00:23:53.83\00:23:55.66 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:55.66\00:23:56.90 JB: I don't want to give anybody false hope. 00:23:56.90\00:23:59.30 I don't want to do that. 00:23:59.30\00:24:01.86 Is there a danger that we could be telling someone, 00:24:01.86\00:24:04.36 there's a way out of depression for you, when really 00:24:04.36\00:24:06.66 there just isn't? 00:24:06.66\00:24:08.43 NN: No danger. 00:24:08.43\00:24:10.00 Of course, we've dealt with hundreds and thousands 00:24:10.00\00:24:12.96 of patients, but in our treatment resistance program, 00:24:12.96\00:24:17.16 the most common complaint we get from people coming 00:24:17.16\00:24:20.93 is they're thinking they're going to be the first one who 00:24:20.93\00:24:25.40 does not respond to the treatments 00:24:25.40\00:24:28.40 and the modalities that we utilize. 00:24:28.40\00:24:30.36 They think that nothing is going to help them. 00:24:30.36\00:24:32.46 Their relatives have made them come. 00:24:32.46\00:24:34.56 But at the end of the program they find out that they 00:24:34.56\00:24:36.76 respond as well. 00:24:36.76\00:24:38.06 And what I have to tell these people who think that there's 00:24:38.06\00:24:40.76 no way out for them is, do you think the biggest expert 00:24:40.76\00:24:45.96 in depression might not know something about it? 00:24:45.96\00:24:48.76 And if the biggest expert in depression might not know 00:24:48.76\00:24:51.86 something about it, perhaps that individual doesn't know 00:24:51.86\00:24:53.66 something about it, and what they don't know might 00:24:53.66\00:24:56.16 actually help them. 00:24:56.16\00:24:57.46 And so there is a way out for everyone. 00:24:57.46\00:25:02.93 And if they find the underlying cause, I have no 00:25:02.93\00:25:05.63 doubt that there's a solution to bring them out of 00:25:05.63\00:25:07.83 depression. 00:25:07.83\00:25:08.73 JB: Thank you for joining me today. 00:25:08.73\00:25:10.36 This has been a blessing. 00:25:10.36\00:25:11.76 I just believe that people are going to get their lives 00:25:11.76\00:25:14.26 back again out of that vice-like grip of depression, 00:25:14.26\00:25:18.43 liberated, we've seen it happen in so many lives many, 00:25:18.43\00:25:21.06 many times, liberated to lead full, productive, joy-filled, 00:25:21.06\00:25:25.23 solid lives, rejoicing in the Lord. 00:25:25.23\00:25:27.93 NN: Amen. 00:25:27.93\00:25:30.03 JB: Friend, I want that person to be you if you are suffering 00:25:30.03\00:25:31.93 from depression, or if you know somebody who is, 00:25:31.93\00:25:34.43 let them know. 00:25:34.43\00:25:35.23 Go to DrNedley.com, get some good
