The Bible says that people should 00:00:01.10\00:00:03.36 rejoice evermore. 00:00:03.36\00:00:06.00 So what if you're somebody who suffers from depression, 00:00:06.00\00:00:09.26 as do one in ten American adults? 00:00:09.26\00:00:12.33 Depression can seriously impact a person's Christian 00:00:12.33\00:00:15.93 experience, and depression has been implicated in the 00:00:15.93\00:00:18.93 deaths of very many people. 00:00:18.93\00:00:20.00 I've come to Weimar, California to speak with Dr. 00:00:20.00\00:00:23.86 Neil Nedley, the president of Nedley Health Solutions. 00:00:23.86\00:00:27.26 Today, part one of a two-part series on depression, its 00:00:27.26\00:00:30.50 causes and its cures. 00:00:30.50\00:00:33.30 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:33.30\00:00:36.30 It has stood the test of time. 00:00:42.13\00:00:46.93 God's book. 00:00:46.93\00:00:48.26 The Bible. 00:00:48.26\00:00:51.83 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:51.83\00:00:56.73 It is written sharing hope around the globe. 00:00:56.73\00:01:04.10 Dr. Nedley, thank you very much for joining me today. 00:01:11.53\00:01:13.63 I'm just so thankful you've been able to make this time. 00:01:13.63\00:01:16.40 NN: Thanks for inviting me, John. 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.00 I'm glad to be here. 00:01:18.00\00:01:19.26 JB: Depression. 00:01:19.26\00:01:20.26 Let's start right at the beginning. 00:01:20.26\00:01:23.33 What is it? 00:01:23.33\00:01:24.73 NN: It is an epidemic in our society today. 00:01:24.73\00:01:27.83 It's dramatically increasing and it causes a lot of deep 00:01:27.83\00:01:31.56 sadness. 00:01:31.56\00:01:32.80 That's what most people equate with depression, 00:01:32.80\00:01:35.43 feelings of deep sadness. 00:01:35.43\00:01:37.30 But, you know, that's not the only symptom that you get. 00:01:37.30\00:01:40.66 You can actually not have that symptom, you can just 00:01:40.66\00:01:43.23 have a feeling of emptiness and have depression. 00:01:43.23\00:01:46.46 JB: Now when you talk about depression, you know, people, 00:01:46.46\00:01:48.20 PEOPLE have a bad day and they're not depressed. 00:01:48.20\00:01:51.26 People can be sad and not be depressed, they can just be 00:01:51.26\00:01:53.93 sad. 00:01:53.93\00:01:55.13 So there's a difference between being in a funk and 00:01:55.13\00:01:57.16 experiencing what is technically known as 00:01:57.16\00:01:59.43 depression. 00:01:59.43\00:02:00.40 NN: Yes. 00:02:00.40\00:02:01.30 JB: So how do we really describe this technical 00:02:01.30\00:02:03.40 depression? 00:02:03.40\00:02:04.53 If someone's depressed, they're going to exhibit 00:02:04.53\00:02:06.73 what? 00:02:06.73\00:02:07.70 NN: They're going to exhibit five, at least five of nine 00:02:07.70\00:02:10.30 symptoms for the majority of the time for the last two 00:02:10.30\00:02:13.83 weeks or more. 00:02:13.83\00:02:16.00 JB: Okay, so there are nine symptoms that qualify in this 00:02:16.00\00:02:19.36 basket known as depression. 00:02:19.36\00:02:21.40 NN: Correct. 00:02:21.40\00:02:22.66 JB: If you've got five of them, you're depressed. 00:02:22.66\00:02:25.06 NN: You have depression, yeah, as long as you have 00:02:25.06\00:02:26.73 those five the majority of the time. 00:02:26.73\00:02:28.26 So if you're sad for just one day out of 14, it doesn't 00:02:28.26\00:02:30.06 count. 00:02:30.06\00:02:30.96 But if you're sad the majority of the last 14 days, 00:02:30.96\00:02:35.13 then that would be symptom number one right there. 00:02:35.13\00:02:37.20 JB: Okay. 00:02:37.20\00:02:38.00 We're going to talk about those symptoms in just 00:02:38.00\00:02:39.50 a moment. 00:02:39.50\00:02:40.26 But first let's point out a couple of things. 00:02:40.26\00:02:42.70 One in 10 Americans suffer depression, correct? 00:02:42.70\00:02:45.00 NN: Correct. 00:02:45.00\00:02:45.96 Yes, right now as we're speaking. 00:02:45.96\00:02:47.70 JB: Okay. 00:02:47.70\00:02:48.63 And how does that break down by gender? 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.23 NN: Well, one of four women will suffer from it at some 00:02:50.23\00:02:51.90 point in their life. 00:02:51.90\00:02:53.73 One out of eight men. 00:02:53.73\00:02:55.36 So it's twice as common in women as it is in men. 00:02:55.36\00:02:58.76 And it's actually increasing. 00:02:58.76\00:02:59.83 Those are kind of old statistics. 00:02:59.83\00:03:01.63 It may be, this newer generation, it looks like 00:03:01.63\00:03:03.96 it's going to be a one out of two lifetime risk for girls 00:03:03.96\00:03:06.36 that are growing up today, suffering from major 00:03:06.36\00:03:10.50 depression. 00:03:10.50\00:03:11.33 JB: One out of two? 00:03:11.33\00:03:12.46 NN: One out of two is what it's looking like. 00:03:12.46\00:03:14.70 JB: That is an epidemic. 00:03:14.70\00:03:16.00 NN: It is an epidemic, yeah. 00:03:16.00\00:03:17.06 It's dramatically increasing. 00:03:17.06\00:03:18.66 Each successive generation when we look at it from 00:03:18.66\00:03:22.30 a epidemiological standpoint, each successive generation 00:03:22.30\00:03:25.46 has had significantly more depression than the previous 00:03:25.46\00:03:28.36 generation. 00:03:28.36\00:03:29.26 JB: And my understanding is that, I don't want to 00:03:29.26\00:03:32.46 overstate this, but I'll tell you what I think and you can 00:03:32.46\00:03:34.56 correct me if you need to. 00:03:34.56\00:03:36.06 The majority of people who suffer depression aren't 00:03:36.06\00:03:39.36 aware that what they have is depression. 00:03:39.36\00:03:41.73 NN: That's true. 00:03:41.73\00:03:42.93 Actually, it's been well documented that about half of 00:03:42.93\00:03:46.60 people with major depression in the United States alone 00:03:46.60\00:03:50.96 are not diagnosed with it. 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.10 In other words, they haven't sought help, they haven't 00:03:53.10\00:03:56.06 gone to a caregiver to find out why they're having the 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.80 symptoms that they're having, and they just think it's a 00:03:58.80\00:04:01.23 normal part of their existence for where they're 00:04:01.23\00:04:04.00 at in life. 00:04:04.00\00:04:05.03 But depression is not normal. 00:04:05.03\00:04:06.56 It shouldn't be considered a normal part of existence. 00:04:06.56\00:04:10.40 JB: So there will be a lot of people watching us today who 00:04:10.40\00:04:14.63 might be completely unaware that they suffer from 00:04:14.63\00:04:18.16 depression. 00:04:18.16\00:04:19.06 NN: Yeah, they might learn something as a result of this 00:04:19.06\00:04:21.50 and might realize that they're actually suffering 00:04:21.50\00:04:23.46 from it. 00:04:23.46\00:04:24.33 JB: Okay. 00:04:24.33\00:04:25.23 Today we're talking about depression and its causes, 00:04:25.23\00:04:27.66 and a moment ago we talked about these nine points, if 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.70 you have five of them for the majority of the time over two 00:04:30.70\00:04:32.90 weeks, you're depressed. 00:04:32.90\00:04:34.50 NN: Yes. 00:04:34.50\00:04:35.53 JB: What are those? 00:04:35.53\00:04:36.76 Do you have time to talk about what those five points 00:04:36.76\00:04:38.60 are? 00:04:38.60\00:04:39.23 NN: Sure. 00:04:39.23\00:04:39.93 Yes. 00:04:39.93\00:04:40.30 The first one would be either a deep sadness or emptiness. 00:04:40.30\00:04:42.46 Men tend to feel the emptiness, women more of the 00:04:42.46\00:04:45.83 sadness, although the men can get sad too. 00:04:45.83\00:04:48.56 Women will tend to have crying spells where something 00:04:48.56\00:04:54.43 they preferred not happen, happened and they start to 00:04:54.43\00:04:57.56 cry and they say, well, that wasn't that bad, why am I 00:04:57.56\00:04:59.56 crying? 00:04:59.56\00:05:01.16 And so they'll tend to seek help a little more than men. 00:05:01.16\00:05:03.80 Men just tend to feel empty and think that that's normal. 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.43 But either one qualifies as symptom number one. 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.66 The second is apathy. 00:05:08.66\00:05:10.36 This is where you wake up in the morning and you're not 00:05:10.36\00:05:12.93 really interested in the day's activities. 00:05:12.93\00:05:16.36 You get up out of a sense of responsibility but you're not 00:05:16.36\00:05:19.36 really interested in the day. 00:05:19.36\00:05:21.10 And that is not a normal symptom to have the majority 00:05:21.10\00:05:24.06 of the time, and so apathy is distinctly abnormal. 00:05:24.06\00:05:28.53 The third one is agitation. 00:05:28.53\00:05:32.46 This is where you're more irritable than you used to be 00:05:32.46\00:05:35.90 or you would also qualify for symptom number three if 00:05:35.90\00:05:41.30 you've had a slowing of your muscle movement. 00:05:41.30\00:05:43.60 You've just kind of slowed down. 00:05:43.60\00:05:45.06 A lot of people don't recognize this until they see 00:05:45.06\00:05:46.96 themselves on a video that they've slowed down, but the 00:05:46.96\00:05:50.66 irritability and the slowness, that's the one the 00:05:50.66\00:05:52.66 individual may not recognize themselves, and they'll have 00:05:52.66\00:05:54.76 to ask their spouse, am I more irritable than I used to 00:05:54.76\00:05:56.90 be? 00:05:56.90\00:05:58.86 The spouse will definitely tell you, or your friends 00:05:58.86\00:06:00.16 might tell you that as well. 00:06:00.16\00:06:01.90 The fourth is a lack of concentration. 00:06:01.90\00:06:06.56 This is where you don't really have the ability to 00:06:06.56\00:06:11.53 sort things through to make complex decisions and you 00:06:11.53\00:06:15.56 recognize that you're just not able to do that mental 00:06:15.56\00:06:19.90 task like you used to. 00:06:19.90\00:06:22.30 Another symptom is sleep disturbances. 00:06:22.30\00:06:24.73 The most common sleep disturbance in someone with 00:06:24.73\00:06:26.76 depression is early-morning awakening. 00:06:26.76\00:06:29.93 This is where they go to bed, they can sleep okay, but then 00:06:29.93\00:06:33.36 they wake up too early and can't get back to sleep. 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.53 But you would also qualify for this symptom if you had 00:06:36.53\00:06:39.33 insomnia. 00:06:39.33\00:06:40.26 In other words, you're not able to go to sleep well. 00:06:40.26\00:06:42.40 Or if you have hypersomnia. 00:06:42.40\00:06:44.86 Many people with depression suffer from just being sleepy 00:06:44.86\00:06:47.86 all the time. 00:06:47.86\00:06:49.83 We have people who come to our program who have been 00:06:49.83\00:06:52.10 sleeping 20 hours a day for weeks. 00:06:52.10\00:06:55.70 Severe depression. 00:06:55.70\00:06:57.50 And so that's another symptom. 00:06:57.50\00:06:59.10 Another symptom is weight or appetite changes. 00:06:59.10\00:07:01.93 The most common is weight gain. 00:07:01.93\00:07:03.66 People tend to self-medicate themselves with chocolate 00:07:03.66\00:07:06.40 and soda pop and food, and as a result of this 00:07:06.40\00:07:10.00 self-medicating they tend to gain weight, but rather 00:07:10.00\00:07:13.06 severe sudden onset depression often has anorexia 00:07:13.06\00:07:17.86 or weight loss. 00:07:17.86\00:07:19.30 JB: So it can go either way. 00:07:19.30\00:07:20.40 NN: It can go either way, yeah. 00:07:20.40\00:07:21.80 Another symptom is fatigue. 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.33 Now fatigue is different than apathy. 00:07:24.33\00:07:27.23 Apathy means that you don't have the interest in the 00:07:27.23\00:07:29.96 day's activities, fatigue means you just are tired 00:07:29.96\00:07:32.80 and you don't know why you're tired. 00:07:32.80\00:07:34.63 You run out of energy and you'd like to have more. 00:07:34.63\00:07:37.50 And that's a very prominent symptom in the people that 00:07:37.50\00:07:40.56 see me as a physician in an internal medicine office. 00:07:40.56\00:07:44.60 And then the more severe symptoms tend to be 00:07:44.60\00:07:47.10 associated with morbid thoughts. 00:07:47.10\00:07:49.63 This is where the individual has a preoccupation with 00:07:49.63\00:07:54.03 death or symbols of death. 00:07:54.03\00:07:57.13 And so it's not just thinking about taking your own life, 00:07:57.13\00:07:59.80 although that would definitely qualify. 00:07:59.80\00:08:01.86 It might be fantasizing about someone else being dead. 00:08:01.86\00:08:05.16 Or just preoccupation with death in general. 00:08:05.16\00:08:07.80 And we are seeing that a lot more commonly today with 00:08:07.80\00:08:10.20 people tattooing skeletons and symbols of death. 00:08:10.20\00:08:14.06 There's even a new bathing suit line that my wife showed 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.36 me in a fashion magazine that just came out where the 00:08:16.36\00:08:19.66 ladies' bathing suits are all skeletons, and people are 00:08:19.66\00:08:24.23 resonating with this. 00:08:24.23\00:08:25.43 If you resonate with that, it's a sign that it's a 00:08:25.43\00:08:27.56 morbid thought. 00:08:27.56\00:08:28.73 Not really normal, and if you have the other symptoms that 00:08:28.73\00:08:32.80 go along with it, it could be a clear sign that you're 00:08:32.80\00:08:35.60 experiencing depression. 00:08:35.60\00:08:37.66 And companies are capitalizing on people's 00:08:37.66\00:08:40.73 morbid thoughts by changing their fashion statements to 00:08:40.73\00:08:45.30 resonate with them. 00:08:45.30\00:08:46.50 JB: Right. 00:08:46.50\00:08:47.16 And if a person has five of those pretty consistently 00:08:47.16\00:08:49.76 over a two-week period, that person really might well 00:08:49.76\00:08:52.90 could be clinically depressed. 00:08:52.90\00:08:55.56 NN: Exactly. 00:08:55.56\00:08:56.26 JB: But there is a way out. 00:08:56.26\00:08:57.23 NN: There is. 00:08:57.23\00:08:58.63 JB: Thank God for that. 00:08:58.63\00:08:59.60 NN: Yes. 00:08:59.60\00:09:00.33 JB: And we're going to talk a little bit more about the 00:09:00.33\00:09:02.26 causes of depression, what causes this stuff to actually 00:09:02.26\00:09:05.83 take place in just a couple of moments. 00:09:05.83\00:09:09.23 Depression, serious business. 00:09:09.23\00:09:11.23 The Bible says that we ought to be full of joy as 00:09:11.23\00:09:14.20 believers in Jesus. 00:09:14.20\00:09:15.63 That's not always the case for everybody. 00:09:15.63\00:09:18.03 Don't go away, we'll be back in a moment with more. 00:09:18.03\00:09:22.46 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says "It is written 'Man 00:09:22.46\00:09:26.33 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 00:09:26.33\00:09:30.03 proceeds out of the mouth of God'." 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.96 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:09:31.96\00:09:35.33 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 00:09:35.33\00:09:38.16 today. 00:09:55.46\00:09:56.93 I've come to Weimar, California to speak with Dr. 00:09:56.93\00:09:59.43 Neil Nedley, the president of Nedley Health Solutions and 00:09:59.43\00:10:02.86 the founder of the Nedley Clinic. 00:10:02.86\00:10:06.93 Dr. Nedley, you are, in fact, an internal medicine 00:10:06.93\00:10:09.53 physician. 00:10:09.53\00:10:10.33 NN: Correct. 00:10:10.33\00:10:11.53 JB: But you've become very interested in and very 00:10:11.53\00:10:13.96 effective at treating depression. 00:10:13.96\00:10:16.93 NN: Yes. 00:10:16.93\00:10:17.93 JB: So how did you get from A to B? 00:10:17.93\00:10:19.56 How did that happen? 00:10:19.56\00:10:20.43 NN: Well, it's kind of interesting. 00:10:20.43\00:10:21.93 When I was a faculty member at Kettering Medical Center, 00:10:21.93\00:10:25.60 Wright State University, I used to teach residents. 00:10:25.60\00:10:28.86 And I used to teach my residents in internal 00:10:28.86\00:10:30.73 medicine that they needed to learn the common diseases 00:10:30.73\00:10:33.43 well. 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.06 I wanted them to learn pneumonia as good as a 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.23 pulmonologist. 00:10:37.23\00:10:38.43 I wanted them to learn congestive heart failure as 00:10:38.43\00:10:40.66 good as a cardiologist, or gastroesophageal reflux 00:10:40.66\00:10:43.23 disease as good as a gastroenterologist. 00:10:43.23\00:10:46.10 Why? 00:10:46.10\00:10:46.86 Because they were going to be seeing these diseases almost 00:10:46.86\00:10:49.26 every day of their life and they really needed to know 00:10:49.26\00:10:53.70 as much as the expert does in the common diseases. 00:10:53.70\00:10:57.10 After I finished my teaching career I set up a practice, 00:10:57.10\00:11:01.66 the Nedley Clinic, you just mentioned it, in Ardmore, 00:11:01.66\00:11:04.40 Oklahoma, and there was an article that crossed my desk 00:11:04.40\00:11:07.76 from the Archives of Internal Medicine showing that up to 00:11:07.76\00:11:11.00 one in three people that an internist sees is suffering 00:11:11.00\00:11:15.53 from major depression. 00:11:15.53\00:11:17.26 And I thought, well, that's not true in my patient 00:11:17.26\00:11:19.23 population in Oklahoma. 00:11:19.23\00:11:20.83 But I thought, you know, I can't just assume that, we'll 00:11:20.83\00:11:22.73 test them. 00:11:22.73\00:11:24.03 So I had them go through the little screening test, 00:11:24.03\00:11:27.36 the nine-point screening test that we discussed earlier, 00:11:27.36\00:11:30.16 when they came in and I found out that it wasn't quite that 00:11:30.16\00:11:33.13 high, it was about one in four, but then it struck me, 00:11:33.13\00:11:36.30 common disease. 00:11:36.30\00:11:37.70 Do I know this as good as a psychiatrist? 00:11:37.70\00:11:40.80 And I had to admit that I didn't and so I started to 00:11:40.80\00:11:43.83 learn at the feet of preeminent psychiatrists, 00:11:43.83\00:11:47.43 and then I recognized my need of more study because there 00:11:47.43\00:11:51.73 hadn't been enough research done on the actual underlying 00:11:51.73\00:11:53.53 causes. 00:11:53.53\00:11:56.03 And as an internist, when I see swollen feet, I don't 00:11:56.03\00:12:00.13 diagnose swollen-foot syndrome and send them out 00:12:00.13\00:12:03.56 the door with a diuretic, I try to find the cause of the 00:12:03.56\00:12:06.06 swollen feet, of which there can be about 100 different 00:12:06.06\00:12:08.56 causes. 00:12:08.56\00:12:10.20 And so I thought let's try to find out what are the real 00:12:10.20\00:12:13.06 causes of depression, and I did some extra research and 00:12:13.06\00:12:16.93 that's how I started to get very involved in this and 00:12:16.93\00:12:20.76 then started treating my own patients with results that 00:12:20.76\00:12:23.00 were far better than what I had ever anticipated. 00:12:23.00\00:12:26.40 JB: I've seen the results of what you've done. 00:12:26.40\00:12:29.56 Your depression recovery seminars have been held from 00:12:29.56\00:12:32.10 sea to shining sea in many, many places. 00:12:32.10\00:12:34.40 I recall seeing the results of depression recovery 00:12:34.40\00:12:37.90 seminars, no names were shown, I must point that out, 00:12:37.90\00:12:40.90 and my friend said, this red line is how depressed people 00:12:40.90\00:12:43.43 were, this green line is how undepressed they were, or how 00:12:43.43\00:12:46.40 they were at the end. 00:12:46.40\00:12:47.80 And I said to my friend, who had conducted this Neil 00:12:47.80\00:12:50.96 Nedley Depression Recovery Seminar, are you fudging the 00:12:50.96\00:12:53.46 results.. 00:12:53.46\00:12:54.76 NN: (LAUGHTER) JB:... 00:12:54.76\00:12:55.70 because they were so dramatic. 00:12:55.70\00:12:57.76 Depression is something a person can come back from. 00:12:57.76\00:13:00.33 NN: Absolutely, absolutely. 00:13:00.33\00:13:02.00 JB: Okay, well, what causes it? 00:13:02.00\00:13:04.36 What are these underlying causes? 00:13:04.36\00:13:05.96 NN: Well, there are 10 categories of causes that we 00:13:05.96\00:13:08.30 uncovered in our research. 00:13:08.30\00:13:11.93 And there's actually over 100 separate identifiable causes 00:13:11.93\00:13:14.46 for depression, but they can be categorized in 10 00:13:14.46\00:13:18.23 different ways. 00:13:18.23\00:13:19.63 And you have to have four of those categories of causes 00:13:19.63\00:13:22.63 before you end up with depression or anxiety 00:13:22.63\00:13:25.06 disorder. 00:13:25.06\00:13:27.20 But one of them is frontal lobe causes. 00:13:27.20\00:13:29.86 That's the one that we deal with first. 00:13:29.86\00:13:32.16 The frontal lobe of the brain is the front portion of the 00:13:32.16\00:13:35.33 brain. 00:13:35.33\00:13:36.46 It's the analytical portion of the brain. 00:13:36.46\00:13:39.36 Scientific studies show it's the seat of spirituality, 00:13:39.36\00:13:42.96 morality and the will. 00:13:42.96\00:13:44.96 It's the reason why we are spiritual beings and human 00:13:44.96\00:13:48.33 beings worship because our frontal lobe size is so much 00:13:48.33\00:13:51.80 greater than cats and dogs that you don't see in worship 00:13:51.80\00:13:55.20 services, because they can't identify with it. 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.36 But the frontal lobe circulation when it goes 00:13:58.36\00:14:01.73 down, it is a major setup for depression or anxiety 00:14:01.73\00:14:06.43 disorders and there's a lot of different things that can 00:14:06.43\00:14:09.13 fit under the categories of what can suppress or enhance 00:14:09.13\00:14:11.83 frontal-lobe function. 00:14:11.83\00:14:13.43 JB: I've got to jump in with "such as" ... 00:14:13.43\00:14:15.30 give me three, four or five pretty quickly. 00:14:15.30\00:14:17.26 Things that suppress frontal-lobe functions. 00:14:17.26\00:14:19.56 NN: Well, for instance, rapid scene of reference, 00:14:19.56\00:14:23.16 entertainment television ... 00:14:23.16\00:14:24.63 JB: Oh, okay. 00:14:24.63\00:14:25.50 NN: ... 00:14:25.50\00:14:26.33 suppresses the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:14:26.33\00:14:28.53 It can actually set yourself up for an addiction. 00:14:28.53\00:14:31.73 JB: And most people are just feasting on that every day. 00:14:31.73\00:14:34.13 NN: Right. 00:14:34.13\00:14:34.93 Certain types of music. 00:14:34.93\00:14:37.10 The syncopated, boom-cha, rock-and-roll music can 00:14:37.10\00:14:41.30 actually suppress the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:14:41.30\00:14:44.90 JB: Something else that masses of population are 00:14:44.90\00:14:47.56 into. 00:14:47.56\00:14:48.53 NN: You know, the interesting thing about this, John, is a 00:14:48.53\00:14:50.60 lot of the things that I mention that detract from 00:14:50.60\00:14:53.23 frontal-lobe function people do to try to get happiness. 00:14:53.23\00:15:00.40 And this is the ironic thing; there are more fun things to 00:15:00.40\00:15:03.53 do than ever before in human history, but yet we have more 00:15:03.53\00:15:07.03 depression than ever before in human history. 00:15:07.03\00:15:10.70 If these fun things actually prevented or cured depression 00:15:10.70\00:15:14.93 we should see the lowest rates of depression on the 00:15:14.93\00:15:17.00 planet. 00:15:17.00\00:15:18.36 These rapid-moving video games can actually suppress 00:15:18.36\00:15:20.46 the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:15:20.46\00:15:22.96 A lot of this screen time, this entertainment screen 00:15:22.96\00:15:28.76 time that America is fascinated with, a lot of it 00:15:28.76\00:15:31.76 does suppress frontal-lobe function. 00:15:31.76\00:15:33.90 And then just when we're not really exercising the 00:15:33.90\00:15:39.13 spiritual part of our brain, when we're not involved in 00:15:39.13\00:15:42.70 worship, when we're not involved in spiritual 00:15:42.70\00:15:46.50 analysis or reading, like the Bible, and analyzing 00:15:46.50\00:15:51.90 scripture with scripture, that's going to be a hit as 00:15:51.90\00:15:53.76 well. 00:15:53.76\00:15:56.20 And it's not that necessarily we have to have the Bible, 00:15:56.20\00:16:00.96 but we need to have some sort of analysis, some sort of 00:16:00.96\00:16:02.23 abstract analysis that can help frontal-lobe function. 00:16:02.23\00:16:07.73 JB: Okay. 00:16:07.73\00:16:08.53 NN: So the second area is exercise, actually, lifestyle 00:16:08.53\00:16:13.90 causes. 00:16:13.90\00:16:14.96 Physical exercise actually helps the brain. 00:16:14.96\00:16:19.53 Under the lifestyle causes, sunlight. 00:16:19.53\00:16:21.66 The light and the blue sky that we're under here at 00:16:21.66\00:16:23.83 Weimar actually helps depression. 00:16:23.83\00:16:27.16 It improves serotonin levels in the brain. 00:16:27.16\00:16:28.86 So when we're indoors, not experiencing outdoor light, 00:16:28.86\00:16:32.13 we're getting a hit with that. 00:16:32.13\00:16:34.73 And then not regularly breathing fresh air. 00:16:34.73\00:16:37.66 Here at Weimar we've got these beautiful pine trees 00:16:37.66\00:16:40.76 exuding negative ions, just breathing that in can help in 00:16:40.76\00:16:44.63 regards to depression. 00:16:44.63\00:16:46.56 The third category is circadian rhythm. 00:16:46.56\00:16:49.56 This has to do with our sleep-wake cycle and our 00:16:49.56\00:16:52.53 regularity. 00:16:52.53\00:16:53.76 The more irregular we are in schedule, the more that is a 00:16:53.76\00:16:56.56 blow to the brain. 00:16:56.56\00:16:57.93 The brain likes a regular regimented schedule and the 00:16:57.93\00:17:03.33 best circadian rhythm as far as optimal performance for 00:17:03.33\00:17:06.90 the brain is early to bed, early to rise. 00:17:06.90\00:17:09.70 You make more melatonin and it's one of the reasons why 00:17:09.70\00:17:13.70 almost across the board successful business people 00:17:13.70\00:17:17.26 tend to be early-to-bed, early-to-rise people. 00:17:17.26\00:17:20.70 Highly successful. 00:17:20.70\00:17:21.70 The only exception to that is the entertainment industry 00:17:21.70\00:17:24.70 and those individuals, of course, have much higher 00:17:24.70\00:17:27.53 rates of depression, but they're late-nighters just 00:17:27.53\00:17:30.23 because of their occupation. 00:17:30.23\00:17:31.50 The fourth category after circadian rhythm is 00:17:31.50\00:17:37.33 nutrition. 00:17:37.33\00:17:38.80 What we are putting into our body actually gets turned 00:17:38.80\00:17:41.53 into neurotransmitters. 00:17:41.53\00:17:43.30 And so there's a lot to nutrition and the brain and a 00:17:43.30\00:17:47.50 lot to the typical American diet. 00:17:47.50\00:17:50.40 It's short in omega-3, not high in tryptophan and 00:17:50.40\00:17:54.23 carbohydrates to the degree to make enough dopamine and 00:17:54.23\00:17:57.13 norepinephrine and serotonin. 00:17:57.13\00:17:58.60 And so we really do a good nutritional analysis on our 00:17:58.60\00:18:02.43 patients and change that factor. 00:18:02.43\00:18:04.70 Fifth has to do with addiction hits. 00:18:04.70\00:18:08.46 If you're addicted to any substance or non-substance, 00:18:08.46\00:18:11.96 be it gambling, pornography, alcohol, any addiction can 00:18:11.96\00:18:16.30 actually be a setup for depression. 00:18:16.30\00:18:20.06 Not in and of itself causing it, but if you have three 00:18:20.06\00:18:24.40 other causes and that, it's going to tide you over into 00:18:24.40\00:18:27.03 rather severe depression. 00:18:27.03\00:18:29.56 JB: Let's touch on these remaining two or three or 00:18:29.56\00:18:31.43 four just quickly. 00:18:31.43\00:18:32.86 NN: In regards to our social situation, it can have a role 00:18:32.86\00:18:36.46 to play. 00:18:36.46\00:18:37.56 In regards to medical conditions, like thyroid, 00:18:37.56\00:18:41.06 that can have a role to play. 00:18:41.06\00:18:43.06 In regards to genetics, that can also have a role to play. 00:18:43.06\00:18:48.43 And then there is other factors that we lump under 00:18:48.43\00:18:53.86 toxins that can have a role to play. 00:18:53.86\00:18:56.33 JB: Sure. 00:18:56.33\00:18:57.30 Depression is a major issue affecting masses of people in 00:18:57.30\00:19:00.70 the United States and other countries around the world. 00:19:00.70\00:19:03.23 Who are getting depressed? 00:19:03.23\00:19:06.63 Who are the people suffering from depression today? 00:19:06.63\00:19:09.20 Is it the people you would expect or could it be that 00:19:09.20\00:19:12.50 nice lady living next door? 00:19:12.50\00:19:14.40 And what does the Bible say about depression and does it 00:19:14.40\00:19:18.30 shine a light on the lives of depressed individuals? 00:19:18.30\00:19:20.96 Were there people in the Bible who were depressed? 00:19:20.96\00:19:22.86 We'll have that information for you in just a moment. 00:19:22.86\00:19:25.46 It Is Written is dedicated to sharing the gospel around the 00:19:26.80\00:19:29.46 world. 00:19:29.46\00:19:30.46 To 00:19:36.16\00:19:38.90 we do it. 00:19:38.90\00:19:40.03 Let's get to know each other better. 00:19:40.03\00:19:41.60 Visit our website: itiswritten.com today. 00:19:41.60\00:19:45.50 JB: Dr. Nedley, who fits the profile of the typical 00:19:46.56\00:19:51.96 depression sufferer? 00:19:51.96\00:19:53.73 NN: Well, you know, that profile is so broad. 00:19:53.73\00:19:56.76 It really is. 00:19:56.76\00:19:58.16 Very likely your next door neighbor. 00:19:58.16\00:20:00.16 It's probably someone you're working with. 00:20:00.16\00:20:02.83 In fact, chances are, not just chances, it's actually 00:20:02.83\00:20:07.83 basically a 100% chance that you know someone that has 00:20:07.83\00:20:10.53 depression. 00:20:10.53\00:20:11.73 Any viewer knows someone that has depression or they have 00:20:11.73\00:20:14.53 depression themselves. 00:20:14.53\00:20:15.73 That's how common it is. 00:20:15.73\00:20:16.50 JB: Speaking stereotypically, I admit I'm doing this, you 00:20:16.50\00:20:20.16 know, I'm thinking depression, a kid with black 00:20:20.16\00:20:22.83 clothing and long stringy hair who mopes around sitting 00:20:22.83\00:20:25.96 in a corner and whatever, but it could just as well be the 00:20:25.96\00:20:29.06 lady next door in the business suit who's taking 00:20:29.06\00:20:31.46 the bus to work. 00:20:31.46\00:20:32.43 NN: Exactly. 00:20:32.43\00:20:33.43 Yeah, both of them could have depression. 00:20:33.43\00:20:35.56 I mean, antidepressants are the number one selling 00:20:35.56\00:20:37.10 category of drugs today and they're flying off shelves in 00:20:37.10\00:20:42.76 pharmacies. 00:20:42.76\00:20:43.50 Anyone who works at a pharmacy sees all sorts of 00:20:43.50\00:20:46.03 people, even professional people, people with suits and 00:20:46.03\00:20:50.06 ties that appear to have some level of success taking these 00:20:50.06\00:20:54.23 in order to feel like they can function. 00:20:54.23\00:20:57.36 JB: Depression even goes so far as to wreak havoc with a 00:20:57.36\00:21:00.33 person's relationship with God, doesn't it? 00:21:00.33\00:21:02.13 NN: Oh, absolutely. 00:21:02.13\00:21:03.40 Yeah, I mean, because of what it does to the frontal lobe, 00:21:03.40\00:21:06.00 the area of spirituality and morality and the will, it's a 00:21:06.00\00:21:08.50 major threat to the spiritual part. 00:21:08.50\00:21:11.66 Now that's not saying that you can't run into depression 00:21:11.66\00:21:13.66 if you're a spiritual person. 00:21:13.66\00:21:18.70 We know from Elijah, Elijah was a very spiritual person 00:21:18.70\00:21:23.03 and very connected with God and believed his Word, but 00:21:23.03\00:21:26.83 slipped into very severe depression for good reasons. 00:21:26.83\00:21:30.53 JB: That's interesting, isn't it. 00:21:30.53\00:21:32.20 Fervent, committed, faithful believers in Jesus can suffer 00:21:32.20\00:21:35.46 serious depression. 00:21:35.46\00:21:37.06 NN: Yes, they can. 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.06 JB: And can we say through no fault of their own? 00:21:38.06\00:21:41.46 What I mean is they're not bad people, they didn't give 00:21:41.46\00:21:43.76 up on God, they just fell into some of these situations 00:21:43.76\00:21:46.46 that lead to depression. 00:21:46.46\00:21:47.53 NN: Yeah. 00:21:47.53\00:21:48.80 And they did it ignorantly, you know. 00:21:48.80\00:21:51.10 In Elijah's situation, he didn't realize what he was 00:21:51.10\00:21:53.83 doing to lead himself into it. 00:21:53.83\00:21:57.40 JB: We've got other people in the Bible, too, suffering 00:21:57.40\00:21:58.93 from depression? 00:21:58.93\00:21:59.53 NN: Yeah. 00:21:59.53\00:22:00.23 Saul suffered from depression and Saul had definite 00:22:00.23\00:22:02.76 reasons. 00:22:02.76\00:22:03.60 Unfortunately he went through a therapeutic program but he 00:22:03.60\00:22:06.00 never took care of the underlying distorted 00:22:06.00\00:22:09.50 thoughts. 00:22:09.50\00:22:10.20 That's another characteristic of virtually every depressed 00:22:10.20\00:22:12.13 individual. 00:22:12.13\00:22:12.90 They have thoughts on the surface that appear valid, 00:22:12.90\00:22:15.80 but when we actually delve into them, they are 00:22:15.80\00:22:20.20 irrational, just plain wrong, and twisted thinking is a 00:22:20.20\00:22:23.80 major cause of suffering. 00:22:23.80\00:22:25.60 And that was true with Saul, it was true with Elijah, he 00:22:25.60\00:22:28.10 had twisted thinking. 00:22:28.10\00:22:29.30 It was true with Solomon. 00:22:29.30\00:22:30.90 JB: Tell me about Solomon. 00:22:30.90\00:22:32.00 NN: Well, Solomon tried to do everything that would 00:22:32.00\00:22:35.40 experience pleasure and make him happy. 00:22:35.40\00:22:38.10 So he tried alcohol, he tried opium, he tried pornography, 00:22:38.10\00:22:42.60 had live pornography. 00:22:42.60\00:22:44.10 In fact, he said, anything that anyone else was doing 00:22:44.10\00:22:47.30 where it looked like they were having fun he wanted to 00:22:47.30\00:22:49.13 do it. 00:22:49.13\00:22:50.30 And he said, therefore he hated life and it brought him 00:22:50.30\00:22:52.63 to despair. 00:22:52.63\00:22:53.90 And so he got into the culture of today. 00:22:53.90\00:22:57.20 One of the reasons why we have so much depression and 00:22:57.20\00:22:59.80 that's why he wrote the book Ecclesiastes was to warn 00:22:59.80\00:23:01.56 young people to not go where he went, because it's going 00:23:01.56\00:23:05.16 to lead to problems. 00:23:05.16\00:23:06.26 JB: Strange isn't it? 00:23:06.26\00:23:07.10 You mentioned this before. 00:23:07.10\00:23:08.46 So much in the world that offers us fun and a thrill 00:23:08.46\00:23:11.83 and a good time and distractions, and yet we're 00:23:11.83\00:23:14.60 more depressed than we've ever been. 00:23:14.60\00:23:16.50 What? 00:23:16.50\00:23:17.03 Is it true? 00:23:17.03\00:23:17.70 Are we more depressed than we've ever been? 00:23:17.70\00:23:19.30 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:19.30\00:23:20.10 More depressed than we've ever been. 00:23:20.10\00:23:21.76 JB: God has a way out, yes? 00:23:21.76\00:23:22.70 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:22.70\00:23:24.30 JB: Okay. 00:23:24.30\00:23:24.86 Tell me a little bit about what the Bible says God's 00:23:24.86\00:23:28.36 willing to do in a person's life to bring him back to 00:23:28.36\00:23:30.60 where he wants him to be? 00:23:30.60\00:23:31.93 NN: Well, he is willing to change disappointment into 00:23:31.93\00:23:34.86 appointment. 00:23:34.86\00:23:36.16 And there are steps to get there. 00:23:36.16\00:23:38.20 JB: Okay, now ... 00:23:38.20\00:23:38.96 sorry, I'm jumping in here. 00:23:38.96\00:23:40.13 In your Depression Recovery Seminar you use that very 00:23:40.13\00:23:42.56 phrase. 00:23:42.56\00:23:44.06 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:44.06\00:23:45.16 JB: Tell me about that. 00:23:45.16\00:23:45.96 NN: From disappointment to appointment. 00:23:45.96\00:23:47.66 And we actually study, in order to get the frontal lobe 00:23:47.66\00:23:49.76 going, we study the book of Daniel. 00:23:49.76\00:23:51.86 Daniel's revered by the Jews, revered by the Muslims, 00:23:51.86\00:23:55.60 revered by Christians. 00:23:55.60\00:23:57.20 Even secular individuals. 00:23:57.20\00:23:58.46 Isaac Newton was very interested in Daniel, and 00:23:58.46\00:24:02.36 every story, every chapter in Daniel starts out with a 00:24:02.36\00:24:06.06 disappointment, ends with an appointment. 00:24:06.06\00:24:07.80 And there's a spiritual key that transforms it from one 00:24:07.80\00:24:11.83 to the other. 00:24:11.83\00:24:12.66 And that's part of the therapeutic program that we 00:24:12.66\00:24:14.26 put people on. 00:24:14.26\00:24:15.36 JB: How important do you think the Bible itself plays, 00:24:15.36\00:24:18.63 how important a role does it play bringing people out of 00:24:18.63\00:24:23.00 depression into the place God wants them to be? 00:24:23.00\00:24:25.76 NN: Well I think it plays a very important role, because 00:24:25.76\00:24:28.86 of that spiritual nature that we have in the frontal lobe 00:24:28.86\00:24:31.43 of the brain. 00:24:31.43\00:24:33.10 And so it plays a crucial role. 00:24:33.10\00:24:35.73 Yes, you can get rid of depression without it, but 00:24:35.73\00:24:38.20 you can also get rid of depression far faster and 00:24:38.20\00:24:41.40 also far more comprehensively when we have that spiritual 00:24:41.40\00:24:44.80 part intact, because that also gives us the ability, 00:24:44.80\00:24:48.63 the power to be able to do things that we don't want to 00:24:48.63\00:24:53.80 do now. 00:24:53.80\00:24:54.96 We may not want to go out and exercise. 00:24:54.96\00:24:57.13 We may not want to eat foods that are high in omega-3. 00:24:57.13\00:24:59.36 We may not want to get the light therapy. 00:24:59.36\00:25:01.63 Depressed people tend to not be very motivated people. 00:25:01.63\00:25:04.20 But when that spiritual part is there, the motivation can 00:25:04.20\00:25:06.36 come and they can start making significant changes in 00:25:06.36\00:25:11.06 their life for the better. 00:25:11.06\00:25:13.46 JB: Now, we talked about some of the things that cause 00:25:13.46\00:25:15.93 depression and we talked about some of those danger 00:25:15.93\00:25:19.76 areas that you identified several of them. 00:25:19.76\00:25:23.33 What should a person do who feels that he or she might be 00:25:23.33\00:25:25.93 dealing with depression? 00:25:25.93\00:25:27.23 NN: Well I would recommend that they maybe go to our 00:25:27.23\00:25:29.73 website, take the test. 00:25:29.73\00:25:31.33 We have a little test online that can tell them if they 00:25:31.33\00:25:33.86 have depression, anxiety, and it can also tell them which 00:25:33.86\00:25:37.26 one of those 10 categories of hits or multiple hits are 00:25:37.26\00:25:40.13 active in them, and then get the resources and get on the 00:25:40.13\00:25:44.13 program that will reverse it. 00:25:44.13\00:25:46.20 JB: www.drnedley.com Dr. 00:25:46.20\00:25:48.03 Nedley, thanks for joining me today. 00:25:48.03\00:25:49.80 NN: Oh, it's been great. 00:25:49.80\00:25:51.20 JB: Friends, thank you for joining me, too. 00:25:51.20\00:25:53.40 Depression is a serious, serious issue and it's so 00:25:53.40\00:25:55.23 serious that it can even get in between a person and God. 00:25:55.23\00:25:58.70 I don't want that going on in your life and if you know 00:25:58.70\00:26:00.63 somebody else who is at risk for that, then now you've got 00:26:00.63\00:26:03.76 tools to help that person get to the place that God wants 00:26:03.76\00:26:06.56 them to be, depression free and healthy and thriving in 00:26:06.56\00:26:10.26 the Lord. 00:26:10.26\00:26:11.96 Dr. Nedley, let's pray together and pray for the 00:26:11.96\00:26:13.93 many people, not only suffering depression, but who 00:26:13.93\00:26:16.66 are able to go and be agents of change in the life of 00:26:16.66\00:26:19.36 other people. 00:26:19.36\00:26:20.23 Let's pray. 00:26:20.23\00:26:21.66 Our Father in heaven, I thank you that in your presence 00:26:21.66\00:26:25.13 there is fullness of joy. 00:26:25.13\00:26:27.66 But owing to a variety of factors there are many people 00:26:27.66\00:26:29.93 who are not there and depression is holding them 00:26:29.93\00:26:33.06 down. 00:26:33.06\00:26:34.26 Dear Lord, I pray that you would break those bonds 00:26:34.26\00:26:37.80 and set people free. 00:26:37.80\00:26:39.76 Free to find joy and hope and wholeness in Jesus. 00:26:39.76\00:26:44.90 We pray in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:26:44.90\00:26:47.16 NN: Amen. 00:26:47.16\00:26:49.16 JB: In the
