00:02:51.53\00:02:52.77 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's a organization called the American 00:02:52.80\00:02:54.64 Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. 00:02:54.67\00:02:56.60 And there's thousands of doctors 00:02:56.64\00:02:58.27 who are members of this organization, 00:02:58.31\00:03:00.68 and their specialty is into learning how we can 00:03:00.71\00:03:04.31 promote anti-aging, live longer and healthier lives. 00:03:04.35\00:03:08.15 And, uh, so what they have is they have certifications 00:03:08.18\00:03:10.82 for both medical doctors, board certifications, 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.69 as well as healthcare practitioners. 00:03:13.72\00:03:15.42 I'm a nutritionist, so I've taken the exams 00:03:15.46\00:03:18.03 and become board certified in that area as well. 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.20 Because that's a big interest of mine. 00:03:20.23\00:03:21.50 >>John: Anti-aging. 00:03:21.53\00:03:22.40 You can't stop a person getting old. 00:03:22.43\00:03:23.83 The only way to not get old is to die. 00:03:23.87\00:03:25.50 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:03:25.53\00:03:26.17 >>John: The longer you live, 00:03:26.20\00:03:27.14 the further back in time your birthday gets. 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.37 But I'm expecting that this idea of anti-aging is, 00:03:29.40\00:03:32.47 is warding off the ravages of Father Time. 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.88 Is that right? 00:03:34.91\00:03:35.58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:03:35.61\00:03:36.64 And, uh, it's not that we're against aging. 00:03:36.68\00:03:38.08 >>John: Oh, no. 00:03:38.11\00:03:38.98 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're going to age. 00:03:39.01\00:03:40.02 We're going to get a year older every year. 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.42 But there's things that we can do to slow 00:03:41.45\00:03:42.78 the aging process down and, in some cases, 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.42 even reverse some of that process, 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.66 by a healthy lifestyle and some of the new technologies 00:03:48.69\00:03:51.43 in the anti-aging field. 00:03:51.46\00:03:52.53 >>John: I've heard of this thing, 00:03:52.56\00:03:53.33 you look at your birth certificate; 00:03:53.36\00:03:54.50 it says you're 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. 00:03:54.56\00:03:56.36 But then you can do these little tests and it will tell you your, 00:03:56.40\00:03:59.53 your health age, 00:03:59.57\00:04:01.00 and you might be older than your birth certificate says, 00:04:01.04\00:04:03.77 or doing better. 00:04:03.81\00:04:05.71 Your body's younger than that piece of paper might suggest. 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.34 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:04:08.38\00:04:09.44 That's the different between chronological age 00:04:09.48\00:04:11.45 versus biological age. 00:04:11.48\00:04:13.48 Chronologically, we get a year, every year we get older. 00:04:13.52\00:04:17.19 But if you are living a healthy lifestyle, 00:04:17.22\00:04:19.52 you're taking good care of your health, 00:04:19.55\00:04:20.89 you don't have the health problems and so forth 00:04:20.92\00:04:22.89 that a lot of average Americans do, you, uh, 00:04:22.92\00:04:25.66 can be potentially younger than your chronological age, 00:04:25.69\00:04:29.53 just by the way you live. 00:04:29.56\00:04:30.80 >>John: Now, if you look at the average age for an individual 00:04:30.83\00:04:33.27 in a Western society, it's not that bad. 00:04:33.30\00:04:35.54 And the average lifespan that is, 00:04:35.57\00:04:38.74 is a whole lot longer than it was, 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.68 say, a generation or a hundred years ago. 00:04:40.71\00:04:44.15 Now, much of that is due to improvements in healthcare; 00:04:44.18\00:04:48.72 uh, infant mortality rates are down. 00:04:48.75\00:04:51.05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:04:51.09\00:04:52.35 >>John: So those figures don't really give a very accurate 00:04:52.39\00:04:56.62 picture of how much better we're doing today 00:04:56.66\00:04:59.13 than we were some years ago. 00:04:59.16\00:05:00.43 Perhaps the numbers overstate the fact. 00:05:00.46\00:05:03.06 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:05:03.10\00:05:04.13 >>John: So, where are we today with healthcare? 00:05:04.17\00:05:05.23 How well are we doing as a society? 00:05:05.27\00:05:07.00 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're doing very poorly, 00:05:07.04\00:05:08.34 and I think a lot of people see that today. 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.11 Uh, the problem is that, from healthcare standpoint, 00:05:10.14\00:05:14.11 is there's so much emphasis put on cheaper health insurance, 00:05:14.14\00:05:18.05 or cheaper drugs, uh, less expensive, 00:05:18.08\00:05:21.35 uh, treatments that we can have, and so forth. 00:05:21.38\00:05:23.92 Some of those, uh, technologies are miraculous. 00:05:23.95\00:05:26.79 It's amazing what we are doing today 00:05:26.82\00:05:29.12 in the science of medicine. 00:05:29.16\00:05:30.56 However, we're not getting to the root cause 00:05:30.59\00:05:33.23 of the healthcare crisis problem, 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.76 and that has to do with the way we are living, our lifestyle. 00:05:34.83\00:05:39.23 Because for 90 percent of the cases, 00:05:39.27\00:05:42.10 it's our lifestyle that's causing the health problems that 00:05:42.14\00:05:45.31 we have today. 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.34 >>John: A few changes in the way we're living 00:05:46.37\00:05:47.74 our lives would affect our outcomes dramatically. 00:05:47.78\00:05:50.11 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:05:50.15\00:05:50.78 And that's why, 00:05:50.81\00:05:51.78 in addition to the field of anti-aging medicine, 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.98 this whole area of lifestyle medicine 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.35 is also emerging for doctors who see, 00:05:56.38\00:05:59.42 they're beginning to see the light that we can't spend 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.92 all this money in healthcare that we are today, 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.86 and all these exotic treatments in medicines and technologies, 00:06:03.89\00:06:07.50 that we need to do things that can be less expensive, 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.63 and that's like simple things: eating healthier, 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.00 getting regular exercise, learning to control your stress. 00:06:15.04\00:06:18.27 Lifestyle things. 00:06:18.31\00:06:19.31 >>John: So tell me, then, I go to the doctor, 00:06:19.34\00:06:20.58 I'm a diabetic, I have, um, some kind of, uh, cardiac issue. 00:06:20.61\00:06:25.45 I might have rheumatoid arthritis. 00:06:25.48\00:06:27.82 One thing I could do is say, 00:06:27.85\00:06:28.98 write me some prescriptions, Doctor. 00:06:29.02\00:06:30.55 And the doctors in many, or most, 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.09 cases will do just that. 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.25 But a lifestyle medicine physician might do what? 00:06:33.29\00:06:37.76 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lifestyle medicine doctor would sit down 00:06:37.79\00:06:39.76 with you and take a look at your diet, 00:06:39.79\00:06:41.26 and say, well, what kind of foods do you eat? 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.60 Of course, they would do some tests, 00:06:43.63\00:06:45.00 blood tests, and do the weight, height and weight, 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.37 all those tests, to get an assessment. 00:06:47.40\00:06:49.54 But they will look at your diet, they'll look at your exercise 00:06:49.57\00:06:52.47 and activity habits, 00:06:52.51\00:06:53.94 all the things related to your lifestyle, 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.78 really, and see where those may be the causes 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.65 of the health condition you may have. 00:06:58.68\00:07:00.35 And, as I said, in the majority of health problems today 00:07:00.38\00:07:04.89 are diet and lifestyle related. 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.99 In fact, 70 percent of the patients that we have 00:07:07.02\00:07:09.76 in our hospitals today are there as a result of diet 00:07:09.79\00:07:12.36 and lifestyle-related causes. 00:07:12.39\00:07:13.86 >>John: The old saying is, "you are what you eat." 00:07:13.90\00:07:16.10 So what are some good foods that can, 00:07:16.13\00:07:19.13 uh, help, uh, perhaps, uh, ward off sickness, 00:07:19.17\00:07:24.17 or reverse diseases, or, or are anti-aging? 00:07:24.21\00:07:28.78 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's one message that I want to get 00:07:28.81\00:07:30.45 clear to you, and to our listeners today, 00:07:30.48\00:07:33.05 is that foods from plants prevent the diseases 00:07:33.08\00:07:36.92 that are killing us. 00:07:36.95\00:07:38.42 Foods from plants promote health, 00:07:38.45\00:07:42.29 longevity, and beauty. 00:07:42.32\00:07:43.76 >>John: So, what are some foods? 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.69 List some quickly, and say, well, 00:07:45.73\00:07:47.03 these ones are really good for you. 00:07:47.03\00:07:48.46 >>Dr. Westerdahl: The, uh, research is showing now, 00:07:48.50\00:07:50.40 eating more fruits and vegetables, 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.63 particularly colorful fruits and vegetables, 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.84 can significantly reduce your risk of having stroke and, 00:07:54.87\00:07:58.77 and, uh, heart disease, and cancer. 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.14 There are wonderful compounds that we find in these fruits 00:08:01.18\00:08:05.35 and vegetables that God has put into nature for us to eat, 00:08:05.38\00:08:08.75 besides just the nutrients, the vitamins and minerals, 00:08:08.78\00:08:11.62 but the, we call them phytochemicals, 00:08:11.65\00:08:14.02 which are, include antioxidants. 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.22 Uh, these are compounds that actually prevent or slow 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.96 the process of aging. 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.03 They prevent our cells from rusting, you could say. 00:08:21.06\00:08:24.00 And, uh, they actually block some of the carcinogens 00:08:24.03\00:08:29.57 doing their damage to these cells as well. 00:08:29.60\00:08:31.67 >>John: I'm excited about that. 00:08:31.71\00:08:32.77 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:08:32.81\00:08:33.74 >>John: What are the good antioxidant foods? 00:12:18.07\00:12:19.10 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that's actually a term 00:12:19.13\00:12:20.50 that was developed by Dan Buettner, 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.47 who is with National Geographic Magazine, 00:12:22.50\00:12:24.57 where a few years ago they had a special 00:12:24.61\00:12:26.98 on the secrets of living longer. 00:12:27.01\00:12:29.78 And they identified these blue zones. 00:12:29.81\00:12:32.28 These blue zones are areas in the world where people 00:12:32.31\00:12:35.42 or populations have exceptional health and longevity. 00:12:35.45\00:12:39.35 In that issue of National Geographic, 00:12:39.39\00:12:41.12 they identified three different cultures. 00:12:41.16\00:12:43.32 One is in Okinawa, Japan, 00:12:43.36\00:12:46.70 where there's a high level of centenarians in that area 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.96 who follow the traditional Okinawa lifestyle 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.97 and diet and so forth. 00:12:53.00\00:12:54.27 The second area was in Sardinia, Italy. 00:12:54.30\00:12:57.77 And the third, the blue zone of America, 00:12:57.81\00:13:00.54 was in Loma Linda, California, 00:13:00.58\00:13:03.08 which is the high population of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.91 >>John: And yet, they're living long lives in spite of the fact 00:13:05.95\00:13:08.12 that they're not living in a bucolic little paradise. 00:13:08.15\00:13:11.22 So let's talk about these places. 00:13:11.25\00:13:12.95 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:13:12.99\00:13:13.86 >>John: Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda: 00:13:13.89\00:13:15.06 what are the factors that contribute to this longevity? 00:13:15.09\00:13:17.86 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, when they look at those different 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.43 populations, they find some similar patterns. 00:13:19.46\00:13:22.53 First of all, a lot of them eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.23 They eat a, predominantly a plant-based diet. 00:13:25.27\00:13:27.97 So they're getting a lot of those antioxidants 00:13:28.00\00:13:29.80 and health properties we talked about earlier. 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.34 Uh, they have a, uh, culture where there's a lot of 00:13:32.37\00:13:35.51 socialization with each other. 00:13:35.54\00:13:37.81 They have, uh, their friends; in the Seventh-day Adventist 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.95 population they worship together; 00:13:40.98\00:13:43.15 the community has a similar philosophy of, of life. 00:13:43.18\00:13:46.35 In, um, Okinawa it's the same way. 00:13:46.39\00:13:49.19 These populations are also, uh, 00:13:49.22\00:13:51.16 tend to be more active than other parts, 00:13:51.19\00:13:53.73 their counterparts in their areas where they live. 00:13:53.76\00:13:56.33 And, um, so there's a number of factors that contribute 00:13:56.36\00:13:59.73 to their health and longevity. 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.30 >>John: Hmm. Now, you mentioned the Hunza people. 00:14:01.34\00:14:04.97 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.21 >>John: It Is Written, when George Vandeman was the director 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.71 and the speaker of It Is Written some years ago, 00:14:08.74\00:14:10.55 It Is Written traveled to that part of the world 00:14:10.58\00:14:13.98 and met with the Hunza people, and explored some of the, 00:14:14.02\00:14:18.92 the health secrets of these people that live long. 00:14:18.95\00:14:21.39 What can you tell us about the, the Hunzas? 00:14:21.42\00:14:23.73 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, the Hunzas are up in the Himalayan 00:14:23.76\00:14:25.49 Mountains, very high, used to be northern Pakistan; 00:14:25.53\00:14:28.96 now it is part of Pakistan. 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.40 And, uh, they have a very unique lifestyle in that they live 00:14:31.43\00:14:34.84 a totally natural way of living. 00:14:34.87\00:14:37.34 They eat all organic food. 00:14:37.37\00:14:39.07 They eat predominantly a plant-based diet; 00:14:39.11\00:14:41.21 actually, only 13 days of the year do they eat some meat. 00:14:41.24\00:14:44.71 The rest of the time they follow a vegetarian diet. 00:14:44.75\00:14:47.35 Um, they're amongst the longest living people in the world. 00:14:47.38\00:14:51.05 Uh, reports of ages up to 120 to 130 years of age, 00:14:51.09\00:14:55.56 uh, that have been reported in the Journal 00:14:55.59\00:14:58.13 of the American Medical Association. 00:14:58.16\00:14:59.73 And I know when Pastor Vandeman went over there, 00:14:59.76\00:15:02.60 he had a picture of an individual that was 120 years 00:15:02.63\00:15:05.33 old and was really in good health. 00:15:05.37\00:15:07.27 They have a, uh, a lifestyle that is similar to these other 00:15:07.30\00:15:11.74 blue zones in that it contributes to a population 00:15:11.77\00:15:15.71 that has a lot of centenarians in their population. 00:15:15.74\00:15:17.98 >>John: Now, how do we define aging? 00:15:18.01\00:15:20.65 What are some of the different theories about aging? 00:15:20.68\00:15:23.32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a lot of ways of defining it. 00:15:23.35\00:15:25.39 People think of wrinkles. 00:15:25.42\00:15:26.59 You're losing your hair. 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.39 The typical things we think of aging. 00:15:28.42\00:15:31.19 >>John: I guess I'm aging. 00:15:31.23\00:15:32.16 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And, and we all are aging 00:15:32.19\00:15:33.80 to some degree, right? 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.06 >>John: Um-hmm. 00:17:57.94\00:17:59.21 >>John: I'm going to be going to the bathroom all day long. 00:17:59.24\00:18:00.58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You're going to be going, so, 00:18:00.61\00:18:02.14 you're losing that water. 00:18:02.18\00:18:03.81 You want to have water that's going to keep within the cells 00:18:03.85\00:18:06.31 and retained in there to keep them healthy. 00:18:06.35\00:18:08.22 So really, the best thing to get your water is to eat your water. 00:18:08.25\00:18:12.25 And that's another reason for eating a plant-based diet: 00:18:12.29\00:18:15.06 eating the raw fruits, 00:18:15.09\00:18:16.83 particularly raw fruits and vegetables, 00:18:16.86\00:18:18.96 have a water within their cells that's going to be much easier 00:18:18.99\00:18:21.93 to get within your cell. 00:18:21.96\00:18:23.06 >>John: Now, convince me that this isn't cranky. 00:18:23.10\00:18:25.60 I mean, I can imagine my friend in Tupelo, Mississippi, 00:18:25.63\00:18:28.14 or in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, or in Billings, Montana, 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.61 going, ugh, the guy wants to eat his water, 00:18:31.64\00:18:33.88 he wants to turn me into a rabbit. 00:18:33.91\00:18:35.44 Help me understand that this is good, 00:18:35.48\00:18:38.51 solid, healthy, level, mainstream stuff. 00:18:38.55\00:18:42.45 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah, this is, this is good science, 00:18:42.48\00:18:44.75 based on what we call the science of cellular water, 00:18:44.79\00:18:48.09 and is one of the concepts of aging: that we lose our water. 00:18:48.12\00:18:52.73 As we get older, there's no question, 00:18:52.76\00:18:55.00 our body water in the body cells, 00:18:55.03\00:18:57.33 the water within our cells are lost as we get older. 00:18:57.37\00:19:00.14 So we're trying to build healthy cells to keep that water within. 00:19:00.17\00:19:03.67 >>John: All right. 00:19:03.71\00:19:04.54 I'm a believer; I'm not a skeptic. 00:19:04.57\00:19:05.67 All right, what have we got here, 00:19:05.71\00:19:07.01 and what are we going to put into this machine? 00:19:07.04\00:19:08.34 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay, so, in order to build healthy cells 00:19:08.38\00:19:09.78 and, we're going to start with putting some antioxidants in. 00:19:09.81\00:19:13.68 This is pomegranate juice. 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.65 >>John: All right. 00:19:15.68\00:19:16.75 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Pomegranate juice is loaded with 00:19:16.79\00:19:17.65 antioxidants that... 00:19:17.69\00:19:18.59 >>John: Pomegranate juice. 00:19:18.62\00:19:19.82 >>Dr. Westerdahl: ...that, uh, help protect cells from damage. 00:19:19.85\00:19:22.82 >>John: All right. 00:19:22.86\00:19:23.43 That's good and red. 00:19:23.46\00:19:24.13 You mentioned before the red, 00:19:24.16\00:19:24.96 the reds and purples are good stuff. 00:19:24.99\00:19:26.93 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:19:26.96\00:19:27.96 >>John: Okay. 00:19:27.96\00:19:28.96 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to put 00:19:29.00\00:19:29.93 a vegetable protein in here. 00:19:29.96\00:19:31.13 This is soy, soy milk. 00:19:31.17\00:19:32.90 >>John: All right. 00:19:32.93\00:19:34.10 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So that's going to provide you with 00:19:34.14\00:19:35.30 good-quality vegetable protein. 00:19:35.34\00:19:37.37 >>John: All right, and you get soy milk 00:19:37.41\00:19:38.74 at the supermarket, right? 00:19:38.77\00:19:39.61 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:19:39.64\00:19:40.78 And that's also part of the cell walls, good protein. 00:19:40.81\00:19:43.28 And then blueberries. 00:19:43.31\00:19:44.81 >>John: All right. 00:19:44.85\00:19:45.81 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Probably my favorite fruit. 00:19:45.85\00:19:46.78 Blueberries are loaded with those antioxidants 00:19:46.82\00:19:48.32 that protect cells from, um, being damaged. 00:19:48.35\00:19:51.35 >>John: I love blueberries. 00:19:51.39\00:19:52.69 Some of the best things you can get. 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.02 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So pour all the blueberries in there. 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.36 >>John: I enjoy growing blueberries. 00:19:55.39\00:19:56.69 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something 00:19:56.73\00:19:58.06 that a lot of people may not know about. 00:19:58.09\00:19:59.83 This is what's called soy lecithin. 00:19:59.86\00:20:02.70 Now, people don't realize that every cell wall in your body 00:20:02.73\00:20:07.27 is made of lecithin. 00:20:07.30\00:20:08.84 So by contributing this, kind of supplementing to this drink 00:20:08.87\00:20:12.14 some lecithin that will go into your body, 00:20:12.17\00:20:14.28 so you can absorb it to build those healthy, 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.54 healthy, uh, cells as well. 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.41 >>John: Where do I get this from?
