I'm John Bradshaw. 00:01:50.27\00:01:53.11 Thanks for joining me today. 00:01:53.14\00:01:54.38 We're all familiar with dieting, some of us very familiar. 00:01:54.41\00:01:59.11 And dieting is today a multi-billion-dollar industry. 00:01:59.15\00:02:03.52 And there are diets everywhere. 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.82 The South Beach diet, and the Atkins diet, 00:02:05.85\00:02:08.86 and the paleo diet. 00:02:08.89\00:02:10.26 And many people try these diets with success, 00:02:10.29\00:02:12.93 and many don't. 00:02:12.96\00:02:15.00 You're not surprised, or wouldn't be surprised, 00:02:15.03\00:02:17.07 if you walked by a bookstore today and saw a brand new diet 00:02:17.10\00:02:21.57 book right there being advertised in the window of your 00:02:21.60\00:02:24.41 favorite bookstore. 00:02:24.44\00:02:25.37 You wouldn't be surprised. 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.14 But what if I was to tell you today that there is an original 00:02:27.18\00:02:30.95 diet given us by God, found in the holy Bible? 00:02:30.98\00:02:36.28 And I might suggest to you today that it is the most effective, 00:02:36.32\00:02:40.16 healthy diet ever conceived. 00:02:40.19\00:02:43.09 Well, I'm being joined today by Dr. John Westerdahl, 00:02:43.12\00:02:45.73 a nutritionist with the Bragg Health Institute 00:02:45.76\00:02:48.16 in Santa Barbara, California. 00:02:48.20\00:02:49.93 Dr. Westerdahl, thanks for joining me today. 00:02:49.96\00:02:51.70 >>Dr. John Westerdahl: Oh, great to be with you today, John. 00:02:51.73\00:02:53.27 >>John: Now, you're of the opinion that this book, 00:02:53.30\00:02:54.87 the Bible, contains the original diet. 00:02:54.90\00:02:58.47 Tell me something about that. 00:02:58.51\00:02:59.64 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, it does. 00:02:59.67\00:03:00.88 I look at the Bible as the greatest book on preventive 00:03:00.91\00:03:02.94 medicine ever written. 00:03:02.98\00:03:04.58 And there's a lot of things in here about diet and nutrition, 00:03:04.61\00:03:07.68 and mentioning all different types of foods. 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.92 >>John: Why should a Christian believer 00:03:09.95\00:03:11.65 be worried about his or her health, 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.89 other than you might avoid a heart attack, 00:03:13.92\00:03:16.76 not that that's a bad thing, or live another year or two? 00:03:16.79\00:03:19.59 Why is it important to a believer? 00:03:19.63\00:03:21.10 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, the Bible tells us 00:03:21.13\00:03:23.00 that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:03:23.03\00:03:25.63 and that we should take care of it and honor it, 00:03:25.67\00:03:27.97 and put things in it that promote good health 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.81 as opposed to things that may destroy this temple, 00:03:30.84\00:03:33.58 this living temple. 00:03:33.61\00:03:34.91 It's a magnificent creation of God, 00:03:34.94\00:03:37.01 and we need, need to treat it that way. 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.28 >>John: Tell me about some of these health principles 00:03:39.31\00:03:41.32 you find in the Bible. 00:03:41.35\00:03:42.35 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:03:42.38\00:03:43.32 >>John: Because the Bible is good for us, 00:03:43.35\00:03:44.39 body, mind and spirit, containing principles that, 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.96 that minister to all of those things. 00:03:47.99\00:03:50.76 Now, we can go back, 00:03:50.79\00:03:51.99 I guess, all the way to the Old Testament... 00:03:52.03\00:03:54.30 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:03:54.36\00:03:55.46 >>John: ...and find health principles given us by God. 00:03:55.50\00:03:58.93 What are some of those? 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.37 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, some of those principles, 00:04:00.40\00:04:01.94 of course, in spending time with God in prayer and meditation, 00:04:01.97\00:04:05.47 that's a health principle. 00:04:05.51\00:04:06.44 >>John: It's good for your health, huh? 00:04:06.47\00:04:07.51 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's good for your health. 00:04:07.54\00:04:08.18 It helps to control stress. 00:04:08.21\00:04:09.58 It gives us peace of mind. 00:04:09.61\00:04:11.38 And that's really important. 00:04:11.41\00:04:12.88 That's like nutrition for your brain, 00:04:12.91\00:04:15.18 and for your mind, and for your spirit. 00:04:15.22\00:04:17.22 Also, the Bible, 00:04:17.25\00:04:18.22 if you go back to the old times in the Bible, 00:04:18.25\00:04:21.06 the Old Testament and so forth, 00:04:21.09\00:04:22.62 there are principles that God tells us of ways we should eat. 00:04:22.66\00:04:26.23 From the very beginning, 00:04:26.26\00:04:27.56 in the Garden of Eden diet in Genesis 1:29. 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.47 >>John: There was a, a certain diet in the Garden of Eden. 00:04:30.50\00:04:33.94 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, there was. 00:04:33.97\00:04:34.67 >>John: The Garden of Eatin'. 00:04:34.70\00:04:35.44 What were they eatin' in Eden? 00:04:35.47\00:04:37.27 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, they were eating 00:04:37.31\00:04:38.21 an all plant-based diet. 00:04:38.24\00:04:40.74 There's no killing in the Garden of Eden. 00:04:40.78\00:04:42.91 It was all plant foods. 00:04:42.94\00:04:45.51 It was a vegetarian diet. 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.55 >>John: So what'd they eat? 00:04:47.58\00:04:49.28 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So they ate fruits and nuts. 00:04:49.32\00:04:51.42 Later on, uh, they ate vegetables. 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.12 God provided those foods to us, 00:04:54.16\00:04:55.89 because He knew that those were the best for our health. 00:04:55.92\00:04:58.66 He supplied all the nutrients that our body needs for good 00:04:58.69\00:05:02.36 health and for wellness. 00:05:02.40\00:05:04.20 And that's what science today is showing, 00:05:04.23\00:05:06.33 that eating more plant foods, fruits and vegetables 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.34 and whole grains, nuts, legumes, beans, seeds, 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.94 these things actually have things in them 00:05:12.97\00:05:15.24 that help prevent disease. 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.61 Not only give us good nutrition, but also prevent disease. 00:05:17.65\00:05:20.92 And in some cases can reverse disease, 00:05:20.95\00:05:23.08 if we follow this type of diet. 00:05:23.12\00:05:24.72 >>John: There's that famous old quotation, 00:05:24.75\00:05:27.76 “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food." 00:05:27.79\00:05:30.89 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that was Hippocrates, 00:05:30.93\00:05:32.96 the father of modern medicine, 00:05:32.99\00:05:35.06 and he, uh, pointed that out. 00:05:35.10\00:05:37.07 And that's very good counsel. 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.20 Because if we follow that rule and that guidance 00:05:39.23\00:05:43.10 that we would live longer, healthier lives. 00:05:43.14\00:05:45.11 And something to think about, 00:05:45.14\00:05:46.24 when you look at all the cultures of the world. 00:05:46.27\00:05:48.84 Before there was medicine, there was food. 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.45 Food was the medicine. 00:05:52.48\00:05:53.68 It was not only food to give you good nutrition, 00:05:53.72\00:05:56.99 but it also was your medicine. 00:05:57.02\00:05:59.39 >>John: The whole concept of food being medicine, 00:05:59.42\00:06:02.39 the best medicine being food, is interesting, isn't it? 00:06:02.42\00:06:04.59 What were some of these health laws God introduced 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.13 back in Old Testament times? 00:06:07.20\00:06:08.60 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, one of the biggest ones that I note 00:06:08.63\00:06:11.03 is that, uh, to not eat animal fat 00:06:11.07\00:06:14.97 or eat the blood of animals. 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.24 And when you think about that, those are the disease components 00:06:17.27\00:06:21.18 of those foods. 00:06:21.21\00:06:22.84 >>John: God said eons ago, don't eat fat or blood. 00:06:22.88\00:06:26.38 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:06:26.41\00:06:27.25 >>John: And someone's going to say, 00:06:27.28\00:06:28.28 well, that was Moses, 00:06:28.32\00:06:30.65 and we don't do all that Mosaic stuff now. 00:06:30.69\00:06:33.29 But let me come to Acts, chapter 15 and verse 20, 00:06:33.32\00:06:37.79 and this is at the Jerusalem Council, 00:06:37.83\00:06:40.73 where the New Testament church, the early church, 00:06:40.76\00:06:42.73 was wrestling with certain ideas. 00:06:42.76\00:06:45.17 What principles must we enforce upon gentile believers? 00:06:45.20\00:06:49.97 Acts 15, verse 20: 00:06:50.01\00:06:51.77 “But that we write unto them 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.41 that they abstain from pollutions of idols, 00:06:53.44\00:06:56.48 and from fornication, and from things strangled, 00:06:56.51\00:07:01.75 and from blood.” 00:07:01.78\00:07:03.69 The New Testament book of Acts, very plainly, don't eat blood. 00:07:03.72\00:07:09.29 And again, why? 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.13 Why, why is that principle good? 00:07:11.16\00:07:12.23 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, blood carries the impurities 00:07:12.26\00:07:13.83 of the body. 00:07:13.86\00:07:15.03 So any illness of that cow or whatever the animal may be, 00:07:15.06\00:07:19.70 we're eating that. 00:07:19.73\00:07:21.10 You know, there's been concerns about mad cow disease 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.47 in recent years. 00:07:23.51\00:07:24.67 But what happens when we eat all this blood? 00:07:24.71\00:07:27.31 And when you eat meat, that's what gives it its color, 00:07:27.34\00:07:30.91 you know. 00:07:30.95\00:07:32.08 You have blood; that juicy hamburger has a lot of blood 00:07:32.11\00:07:34.58 in it that you're eating. 00:07:34.62\00:07:35.48 >>John: Um-hmm. 00:07:35.52\00:07:36.58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So the concept of not eating blood, 00:07:36.62\00:07:39.25 not eating the animal fat, is very good advice, I think, 00:07:39.29\00:07:43.26 from the Bible. 00:07:43.29\00:07:44.13 >>John: But didn't Jesus eat meat? 00:07:44.16\00:07:45.59 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, he did. 00:07:45.63\00:07:46.70 >>John: The way Jesus ate meat then, 00:07:46.73\00:07:48.46 did it differ substantively from the way people eat meat today? 00:07:48.50\00:07:51.97 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, he followed the principles 00:07:52.00\00:07:53.64 taught of not eating the animal fat and the animal blood. 00:07:53.67\00:07:56.77 He did eat fish, 00:07:56.81\00:07:58.91 which is different than some of those other animals. 00:07:58.94\00:08:01.68 >>John: Now, somebody suggested to me that in Bible times 00:08:01.71\00:08:03.68 the way they drained the blood out of all of the meat... 00:08:03.71\00:08:05.41 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:08:05.45\00:08:06.45 >>John: ...it wouldn't have tasted markedly 00:08:06.48\00:08:08.52 different from the sole of one's shoe. 00:08:08.55\00:08:10.32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:08:10.35\00:08:11.55 >>John: Unless, of course, it had been seasoned otherwise. 00:08:11.59\00:08:13.25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: They would, uh, actually cut it up, 00:08:13.29\00:08:15.59 wash out all that blood, take all that fat out, 00:08:15.62\00:08:18.69 and it would be just the, 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.46 the description is it tastes like blah. 00:08:20.50\00:08:22.66 >>John: Yeah. 00:08:22.70\00:08:23.57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's no flavor, 00:08:23.60\00:08:24.20 but they would season it. 00:08:24.23\00:08:25.27 >>John: Yeah. 00:08:25.30\00:08:26.47 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So, but they would remove all the blood 00:08:26.50\00:08:27.40 and all the fat. 00:08:27.44\00:08:28.67 >>John: You see those pictures of the piece of steak that has 00:08:28.70\00:08:30.57 been cut with a knife, and it's beautifully pink on the inside. 00:08:30.61\00:08:35.31 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's all the blood. 00:08:35.34\00:08:36.31 >>John: Jesus wasn't eating that, was he? 00:08:36.34\00:08:37.68 >>Dr. Westerdahl: No, he wasn't. 00:08:37.71\00:08:38.65 >>John: And there's no way around that. 00:08:38.68\00:08:39.38 He, certainly he ate meat. 00:08:39.41\00:08:40.82 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:08:40.85\00:08:41.75 Well, Jesus ate the Mediterranean diet. 00:08:41.78\00:08:43.22 Now, the traditional Mediterranean diet, 00:08:43.25\00:08:45.02 not the Mediterranean diet of today, 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.09 which incorporates a lot of Western foods. 00:08:47.12\00:08:49.72 But, uh, that was largely a plant-based diet. 00:08:49.76\00:08:52.89 Lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.50 beans and legumes, with small amounts of fish and so forth. 00:08:55.53\00:08:58.87 >>John: And another thing too: he ate that diet without 00:08:58.90\00:09:02.57 owning an automobile or riding the bus. 00:09:02.60\00:09:05.57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lot of exercise. 00:09:05.61\00:09:06.98 >>John: A lot of exercise. 00:09:07.01\00:09:07.71 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:09:07.74\00:09:08.61 >>John: Yeah. 00:09:08.64\00:09:09.31 So if we, perhaps, incorporated 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.58 that type of exercise regime into our diet today, 00:09:11.61\00:09:14.62 that alone would make a big difference. 00:09:14.65\00:09:16.85 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:09:16.89\00:09:17.89 It's all part of having a balanced lifestyle. 00:09:17.92\00:09:19.92 And including, nutrition is key, 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.12 but exercise is very important too. 00:09:22.16\00:09:24.36 >>John: The original diet. 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.83 It's just plain good for you. 00:09:25.86\00:09:28.10 And it comes to you right here, from the Bible. 00:09:28.13\00:09:30.87 How good for us is it? 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.34 And in what ways can we learn to incorporate 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.47 not only the principles of this diet, 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.17 but the blessings of this diet into our lives? 00:09:37.21\00:09:39.47 I'll be back with more 00:09:39.51\00:09:40.81 from Dr. John Westerdahl in just a moment. 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.41 >>John: The same killer diseases which have taken the lives of 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.98 millions and millions of people every year 00:09:48.02\00:09:50.42 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:09:50.45\00:09:52.85 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:09:52.89\00:09:55.19 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:09:55.22\00:09:57.69 Now, you want to avoid them, 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.03 so make sure you get today's free offer, 00:09:59.06\00:10:01.00 “Healthcare God's Way,” 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.26 which I co- wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.67 Get “Healthcare God's Way.” 00:10:05.70\00:10:07.67 Call 1-800-253-3000, 00:10:07.70\00:10:10.57 write to the address on your screen, 00:10:10.61\00:10:12.71 make sure you visit itiswritten.com. 00:10:12.74\00:10:15.61 >>John: This is It Is Written. 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.48 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:10:17.51\00:10:18.58 Thank you for joining me today. 00:10:18.61\00:10:19.78 I'm joined by nutritionist Dr. John Westerdahl 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.92 from the Bragg Health Institute in Santa Barbara, California. 00:10:22.95\00:10:26.29 We're talking today about the original diet. 00:10:26.32\00:10:29.46 Not the South Beach diet; that came a little bit later on. 00:10:29.49\00:10:32.09 Not the paleo diet; that was added kind of recently. 00:10:32.13\00:10:35.73 But the original diet. 00:10:35.76\00:10:37.83 The Bible diet. 00:10:37.87\00:10:39.70 Now, Dr. Westerdahl, very interesting Bible verse 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.77 I wanted to share with you... 00:10:42.80\00:10:44.57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:10:44.61\00:10:45.41 >>John: ...you right now. 00:10:45.44\00:10:46.21 Exodus 15, verse 26. 00:10:46.24\00:10:48.51 God said this: 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.31 “If you will diligently harken 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.71 to the voice of the Lord thy God, 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.45 and do that which is right in His sight, 00:10:53.48\00:10:55.52 and give ear to His statutes and keep His commandments, 00:10:55.55\00:10:59.79 I will put none of these diseases upon you 00:10:59.82\00:11:03.26 that I have put upon the Egyptians. 00:11:03.29\00:11:05.26 For I am the Lord that healeth thee.” 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.13 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:11:07.20\00:11:07.93 >>John: So follow my plan, 00:11:07.96\00:11:09.50 you will not get the Egyptian diseases. 00:11:09.53\00:11:11.97 What did those Egyptians suffer from? 00:11:12.00\00:11:14.20 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Those Egyptians had heart disease, 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.81 they had cancer, they had arthritis, 00:11:16.84\00:11:18.81 they had diabetes. 00:11:18.84\00:11:20.84 When we look at the diseases of ancient Egypt, 00:11:20.88\00:11:24.45 because they didn't follow God's diet or His diet plan, 00:11:24.48\00:11:28.68 we look at diseases that are very similar 00:11:28.72\00:11:31.32 to what we have in the United States today. 00:11:31.35\00:11:33.42 The same diseases they had in ancient Egypt 00:11:33.46\00:11:35.66 are the same diseases we have today. 00:11:35.69\00:11:37.99 You know, it's getting back to, 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.56 going back to God's principles of healthful living. 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.30 And if we follow those, we would not have those diseases. 00:11:42.33\00:11:45.23 >>John: Now, there are some cancers 00:11:45.27\00:11:46.03 that are going to get you anyway. 00:11:46.07\00:11:47.60 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:11:47.64\00:11:48.77 >>John: It might be because of environmental factors. 00:11:48.80\00:11:50.27 It might be hereditary. 00:11:50.31\00:11:51.24 It might have genes that are predisposed. 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.14 So we can't be too strident and say, 00:11:53.17\00:11:54.84 everybody who eats like me will never get sick. 00:11:54.88\00:11:57.51 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. Yeah. 00:11:57.55\00:11:58.25 >>John: Can we? 00:11:58.28\00:11:59.11 >>Dr. Westerdahl: What you would do, 00:11:59.15\00:12:00.15 you would reduce your risk of those diseases. 00:12:00.18\00:12:02.88 >>John: Enormously, right? 00:12:02.92\00:12:03.79 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And enormously. 00:12:03.82\00:12:04.92 >>John: Yeah. 00:12:04.95\00:12:05.72 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Seventy percent 00:12:05.75\00:12:06.65 of all hospital admissions are, 00:12:06.69\00:12:08.82 the patients that are in the hospital today 00:12:08.86\00:12:10.66 are there because of their diet and lifestyle. 00:12:10.69\00:12:14.13 So if we followed more healthful living principles, 00:12:14.20\00:12:17.63 uh, a lot of those people won't be there. 00:12:17.67\00:12:20.34 By following this original diet that God has given us, 00:12:20.37\00:12:24.67 we can substantially reduce those risks of those diseases. 00:12:24.71\00:12:28.34 >>John: The point is, by simply making some small changes, 00:12:28.38\00:12:32.38 by incorporating God's principles into our lives, 00:12:32.41\00:12:34.62 there are many people who are flat out going to avoid 00:12:34.65\00:12:37.85 doctor's visits, emergency room visits. 00:12:37.89\00:12:40.46 And they're going to arrive 20 years later to their funeral. 00:12:40.49\00:12:43.36 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's correct. 00:12:43.39\00:12:44.49 And what's interesting to see is, 00:12:44.53\00:12:45.83 when you take people who are following the typical American 00:12:45.86\00:12:49.06 diet, we call it the standard American diet, 00:12:49.10\00:12:51.70 SAD, S-A-D, 00:12:51.73\00:12:53.77 when you take people away from that and get them on 00:12:53.80\00:12:56.07 a plant-based diet, 00:12:56.10\00:12:57.51 they can actually reverse some of these diseases, 00:12:57.54\00:13:00.31 such as diabetes. 00:13:00.34\00:13:01.78 And there have been studies by one of my friends 00:13:01.81\00:13:04.41 and colleagues, Dr. Dean Ornish, for instance, 00:13:04.45\00:13:06.88 who did a study where he put people on an all plant-based 00:13:06.92\00:13:10.75 diet, a vegetarian diet, low fat, 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.82 and showed that you can actually reverse heart disease. 00:13:13.86\00:13:17.59 Actually, the plaque buildup on the walls of the arteries 00:13:17.63\00:13:20.76 can actually be reversed to some degree. 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.60 Actually, 82 percent of the patients he put on this diet, 00:13:22.63\00:13:25.83 uh, had reversal of heart disease. 00:13:25.87\00:13:28.40 >>John: And this is important we reiterate, 00:13:28.44\00:13:30.04 because the Bible says our bodies 00:13:30.07\00:13:32.47 are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:32.51\00:13:33.91 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:13:33.94\00:13:34.74 >>John: You've got people who say, 00:13:34.78\00:13:35.54 well, you gotta die of something, 00:13:35.58\00:13:37.45 as they eat another T-bone steak. 00:13:37.48\00:13:39.28 And my response is, 00:13:39.31\00:13:40.35 yeah, but you don't have to die of everything. 00:13:40.38\00:13:42.62 Now, I spoke to a doctor friend of mine, 00:13:42.65\00:13:45.02 and he told me about some of the frustrations 00:13:45.05\00:13:47.29 that he has working with people. 00:13:47.32\00:13:49.19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:13:49.22\00:13:50.13 >>John: He said this in a very nice way. 00:13:50.16\00:13:51.56 He said he had a patient there coming to see him, 00:13:51.59\00:13:53.19 and he said to the patient, 00:13:53.23\00:13:54.46 “You know, if you just drank more water, you'd be okay. 00:13:54.46\00:13:59.33 If you just drank more water.” That's a simple change. 00:13:59.37\00:14:01.77 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:14:01.80\00:14:03.04 >>John: And the patient responded by saying, 00:14:03.07\00:14:04.04 so I'm sharing this with you to challenge, 00:14:04.07\00:14:06.54 to challenge people watching right now. 00:14:06.57\00:14:08.31 The patient responded by saying, 00:14:08.34\00:14:09.81 “Doctor, are you going to write me a prescription, 00:14:09.84\00:14:12.78 or am I going to have to go to another doctor 00:14:12.81\00:14:14.75 who will write me a prescription?” 00:14:14.78\00:14:16.42 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah. 00:14:16.45\00:14:17.32 >>John: So unfortunately, in many case, 00:14:17.35\00:14:19.39 some cases, the remedy is there and it's available, 00:14:19.42\00:14:22.79 but there's a little unwillingness on the part of 00:14:22.82\00:14:25.36 some of us to make even slight changes. 00:14:25.39\00:14:27.96 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Right. 00:14:27.96\00:14:28.86 I've known people, young men, in fact, 00:14:28.90\00:14:31.13 I remember one young man that told me he's taking blood 00:14:31.17\00:14:33.84 pressure medications, he was just like in his thirties, 00:14:33.87\00:14:36.27 blood pressure medication and high cholesterol medication. 00:14:36.30\00:14:39.77 And I told him, um, “Well, what if I work with you and I can 00:14:39.81\00:14:44.51 help you get off those medications by 00:14:44.55\00:14:46.98 following a healthy diet?” And he said, 00:14:47.02\00:14:50.05 “Well, I don't know if I want to make those big drastic 00:14:50.09\00:14:52.29 changes in my lifestyle to do that. 00:14:52.32\00:14:53.96 I'd rather eat the way I want to.” 00:14:53.99\00:14:55.82 And that's where we are today. 00:14:55.86\00:14:57.79 We have to get into what we call lifestyle medicine. 00:14:57.83\00:15:01.06 That's the medicine of the 21st century, 00:15:01.10\00:15:03.43 where doctors are treating their patients with lifestyle, 00:15:03.47\00:15:07.50 instead of all these medications and medical procedures. 00:15:07.54\00:15:10.17 >>John: I want to ask you about the article that I have here. 00:15:10.21\00:15:12.04 It's from the Wall Street Journal. 00:15:12.07\00:15:13.48 I'm not going to drill down too deep into the article. 00:15:13.51\00:15:16.64 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay. 00:15:16.68\00:15:17.65 >>John: Headline: “The Questionable Link 00:15:17.68\00:15:19.98 between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease.” 00:15:20.02\00:15:22.72 And I saw this just the other day 00:15:22.75\00:15:25.09 from another perspective in a British newspaper, front page. 00:15:25.12\00:15:28.26 Why we can now eat, bup, bup, bup, 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.63 unhealthy food. 00:15:30.66\00:15:32.06 Why is it that increasingly there's pushback against this, 00:15:32.09\00:15:35.93 and people are reading in reputable newspapers and 00:15:35.96\00:15:38.63 reputable websites, it's okay to eat this bad stuff? 00:15:38.67\00:15:45.04 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, this is one of the frustrations 00:15:45.07\00:15:46.88 most Americans have today, 00:15:46.91\00:15:48.11 ‘cause they read one day you should eat this way, 00:15:48.14\00:15:50.31 and the next day you should go another way. 00:15:50.35\00:15:52.48 And sometimes it happens, in this case, 00:15:52.51\00:15:54.92 for instance, a study has come out where they're saying, 00:15:54.95\00:15:57.69 well, it looks like saturated fat and cholesterol is 00:15:57.72\00:16:00.52 not all that bad for you. 00:16:00.56\00:16:02.32 That is totally contradictory to the, 00:16:02.36\00:16:05.26 the decades of research which, uh, 00:16:05.29\00:16:07.30 substantiates that eating a diet high in saturated fat and 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.37 cholesterol will increase your risk of heart disease. 00:16:11.40\00:16:15.60 You know, people like to hear good news about bad habits. 00:16:15.64\00:16:18.24 When these studies come out, 00:16:18.27\00:16:19.97 they promote them in the news media, 00:16:20.01\00:16:22.28 you'll see on the time, top of Time magazine and so forth. 00:16:22.31\00:16:25.75 But there are a lot of very reputable scientists that are 00:16:25.78\00:16:28.68 questioning the results of this study and the way it was done. 00:16:28.72\00:16:31.82 I think the thing is, we need to look at, 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.99 as opposed to just one study, look at the hundreds, 00:16:35.02\00:16:38.63 thousands of studies that have been done over the years, 00:16:38.66\00:16:41.23 decades, actually, that are saying the opposite. 00:16:41.26\00:16:44.90 >>John: And there might be a couple of other things 00:16:44.93\00:16:46.17 that we could factor in here. 00:16:46.20\00:16:47.17 One, common sense. 00:16:47.20\00:16:48.64 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:16:48.67\00:16:49.90 >>John: Feed a guy junk food, feed his brother healthy food. 00:16:49.94\00:16:53.61 After a couple of years, they're going to look different. 00:16:53.64\00:16:55.61 After a few decades, 00:16:55.64\00:16:57.18 they're going to look very, very different. 00:22:53.20\00:22:54.80 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, there's debate on that. 00:22:54.84\00:22:56.54 You know, I think most experts would say try to get at least 00:22:56.57\00:22:59.14 eight hours of sleep a day, if possible. 00:22:59.17\00:23:01.54 So that's important. 00:23:01.58\00:23:02.68 We need to take some time to get some rest. 00:23:02.71\00:23:05.01 And it's not just sleeping. 00:23:05.05\00:23:06.41 It's taking some time during the week 00:23:06.45\00:23:08.42 to get away from the stresses of daily life. 00:23:08.45\00:23:11.75 And another biblical principle is having a Sabbath day. 00:23:11.79\00:23:15.62 In fact, taking one day in seven is a restful thing spiritually, 00:23:15.66\00:23:19.76 it's important for our spiritual nutrition, 00:23:19.79\00:23:22.80 but it also helps us in having physical, 00:23:22.83\00:23:24.80 mental and spiritual rest at one time. 00:23:24.83\00:23:27.30 >>John: The final T in this thing... 00:23:27.34\00:23:28.77 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:23:28.80\00:23:29.77 >>John: ...T for trust in God. 00:23:29.80\00:23:31.51 How does trust in God benefit a person, 00:23:31.54\00:23:34.94 body, mind and spirit, regarding, 00:23:34.98\00:23:37.41 in terms of their health? 00:23:37.45\00:23:39.05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, you know, 00:23:39.08\00:23:39.95 it's interesting you brought that up, 00:23:39.98\00:23:41.08 because there's some scientific evidence now to show 00:23:41.12\00:23:42.68 that people who go to church regularly, 00:23:42.72\00:23:44.65 that have a faith, 00:23:44.69\00:23:46.62 that practice and live a faith, 00:23:46.65\00:23:48.36 have lower risk of heart disease. 00:23:48.39\00:23:50.89 They're able to have lower rates of blood pressure, 00:23:50.93\00:23:53.29 better marital satisfaction, generally being able to control 00:23:53.33\00:23:57.30 and handle the stresses of daily living as well. 00:23:57.33\00:24:00.44 >>John: Now, let's look at a biblical example of somebody 00:24:00.47\00:24:03.14 who put these good biblical health principles 00:24:03.17\00:24:05.17 into practice and was blessed spiritually as a result. 00:24:05.21\00:24:09.14 The Israelites had just suffered a, 00:24:09.18\00:24:12.25 a crushing blow. 00:24:12.28\00:24:13.82 Nebuchadnezzar from Babylon had come up to Jerusalem 00:24:13.85\00:24:16.42 and destroyed the place, 00:24:16.45\00:24:17.82 sacked the temple, 00:24:17.85\00:24:19.39 and taken many of the people prisoners, 00:24:19.42\00:24:21.69 marching them across the desert to Babylon. 00:24:21.72\00:24:23.63 It was terrible. 00:24:23.66\00:24:24.63 Daniel was now a slave in Babylon. 00:24:24.66\00:24:28.70 And the Bible says, 00:24:28.73\00:24:30.27 “The king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, 00:24:30.30\00:24:33.37 [the king's food], 00:24:33.40\00:24:34.64 and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, 00:24:34.67\00:24:38.01 that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.” 00:24:38.04\00:24:41.18 So the king said, "Dinner's on me." 00:24:41.21\00:24:44.95 Daniel said, "no way." 00:24:44.98\00:24:46.98 Verse 8: “Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not 00:24:47.02\00:24:51.25 defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, 00:24:51.29\00:24:54.62 nor with the wine which he drank: 00:24:54.66\00:24:56.86 therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs 00:24:56.89\00:24:58.96 that he might not defile himself.” 00:24:58.99\00:25:01.36 And as we come down a little further, 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.03 uh, in verse 12, Daniel requested, 00:25:04.07\00:25:07.54 “Prove your servants, I beseech thee, ten days; 00:25:07.57\00:25:10.71 and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” 00:25:10.74\00:25:13.91 Firstly, what's pulse? 00:25:13.94\00:25:15.28 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Some people refer to it as, 00:25:15.31\00:25:16.71 like lentils might be a pulse. 00:25:16.75\00:25:18.75 >>John: All right. 00:25:18.78\00:25:19.58 So it's certainly, uh, plant-based, 00:25:19.61\00:25:21.62 and it's healthy stuff. 00:25:21.65\00:25:23.12 How well did Daniel do as a result of this dietary plan? 00:25:23.15\00:25:26.62 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, they were healthier and stronger 00:25:26.65\00:25:28.92 than the king's men. 00:25:28.96\00:25:30.56 >>John: In fact, if I were to look at this, 00:25:30.59\00:25:32.69 I would find where the Bible says that when the king checked 00:25:32.73\00:25:36.87 them out, he found them to be ten times wiser. 00:25:36.90\00:25:42.04 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right. 00:25:42.07\00:25:43.07 >>John: Isn't that remarkable? 00:25:43.10\00:25:43.77 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It is. 00:25:43.81\00:25:44.34 >>John: Ten times wiser. 00:25:44.37\00:25:45.57 Now, I don't know if there was an IQ test 00:25:45.61\00:25:47.04 and they had ten times the IQ points or not, but still, 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.68 the biblical terminology makes it dramatic. 00:25:49.71\00:25:53.01 Daniel and his friends prospered. 00:25:53.05\00:25:54.78 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes. 00:25:54.82\00:25:55.88 >>John: If they were just healthier, 00:25:55.92\00:25:57.92 that would be one thing. 00:25:57.95\00:26:00.22 >>John: But I believe it's no coincidence that the very next 00:26:00.26\00:26:02.66 chapter, Daniel, chapter two, finds a spiritual crisis. 00:26:02.69\00:26:07.50 King Nebuchadnezzar has a dream that he can't remember. 00:26:07.50\00:26:10.60 None of the wise men can tell him what the dream was 00:26:10.63\00:26:13.17 or what it means. 00:26:13.20\00:26:14.94 But Daniel and his friends pray to God. 00:26:14.97\00:26:17.97 God gives Daniel the interpretation of the dream. 00:26:18.01\00:26:22.24 I think it's fair to say that if Daniel had not been preserving 00:26:22.28\00:26:25.18 himself physically, God would not have been able to bless him 00:26:25.21\00:26:28.38 so well spiritually. 00:26:28.42\00:26:29.98 Would you agree? 00:26:30.02\00:26:30.62 >>Dr. Westerdahl: I agree. 00:26:30.65\00:26:31.59 >>John: Dr. Westerdahl, 00:26:31.62\00:26:32.49 God's healthcare plan is pretty simple. 00:26:32.52\00:26:34.89 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is. 00:26:34.92\00:26:35.96 >>John: No trips to the bookstore necessary 00:26:35.99\00:26:37.43 unless you don't have one of these Bibles. 00:26:37.46\00:26:39.39 It's pretty succinctly explained, 00:26:39.43\00:26:42.13 and the science demonstrates 00:26:42.16\00:26:43.87 that it's effective and it works. 00:26:43.90\00:26:46.17 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it does. 00:26:46.20\00:26:47.47 >>John: What's your advice, in a nutshell, 00:26:47.50\00:26:48.94 to somebody thinking, I need to make some changes? 00:26:48.97\00:26:52.64 >>Dr. Westerdahl: I would say go back to this book. 00:26:52.67\00:26:54.24 Look at the original diet of man that was given to us by God, 00:26:54.28\00:26:58.11 and it'll make some great changes in your life. 00:26:58.15\00:27:01.78 >>John: The same killer diseases which have taken the lives of 00:27:02.75\00:27:05.25 millions and millions of people every year 00:27:05.29\00:27:08.36 are taking the lives of Christian believers, 00:27:08.39\00:27:09.99 even though God has told us plainly and clearly 00:27:10.03\00:27:12.53 how we can avoid those diseases. 00:27:12.56\00:27:15.13 Now, you want to avoid them, 00:27:15.16\00:27:16.36 so make sure you get today's free offer, 00:27:16.40\00:27:18.23 “Healthcare God's Way,” 00:27:18.27\00:27:20.64 which I co-wrote with Dr. John Westerdahl. 00:27:20.67\00:27:23.27 Get “Healthcare God's Way.” 00:27:23.30\00:27:24.87 Call 1-800-253-3000, 00:27:24.91\00:27:27.84 write to the address on your screen, 00:27:27.88\00:27:30.11 make sure you visit itiswritten.com. 00:27:30.15\00:27:33.08 >>John: Thank you for remembering that It Is Written 00:27:33.58\00:27:36.28 is a faith-based ministry, 00:27:36.32\00:27:38.35 and it's your support that makes it possible 00:27:38.39\00:27:40.36 for us to share God's good news with the entire world. 00:27:40.39\00:27:44.49 Your tax-deductible gift 00:27:44.53\00:27:45.83 can be sent to the address on your screen, 00:27:45.86\00:27:48.00 or through our website, itiswritten.com. 00:27:48.03\00:27:52.07 Thank you for your continued prayerful support. 00:27:52.10\00:27:54.67 Our toll-free number is 800-253-3000. 00:27:54.70\00:27:57.91 800-253-3000. 00:27:57.94\00:28:00.38 Our web address is itiswritten.com. 00:28:00.41\00:28:03.38 >>John: Today we've looked at the original diet, 00:28:04.21\00:28:07.02 given to us by God and promised by God 00:28:07.05\00:28:11.29 to be a blessing in our lives. 00:28:11.32\00:28:13.69 Dr. John Westerdahl, thank you so much for joining me today. 00:28:13.72\00:28:16.52 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's great to be with you today, John. 00:28:16.56\00:28:18.29 >>John: It's been a pleasure to have you here. 00:28:18.33\00:28:19.49 You've blessed immensely. 00:28:19.53\00:28:20.30 Let's pray together... 00:28:20.33\00:28:21.13 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Sure. 00:28:21.16\00:28:22.20 >>John: ...and ask God's blessing on all of us, 00:28:22.23\00:28:24.13 particularly those of us who've decided that we're going to make 00:28:24.17\00:28:27.14 some changes in our lives. 00:28:27.17\00:28:28.67 Our Father in Heaven, we thank you today for Jesus, 00:28:28.70\00:28:32.14 the Great Physician. 00:28:32.17\00:28:33.58 We thank you for the Bible, 00:28:33.61\00:28:35.68 the best book on health ever written, 00:28:35.71\00:28:37.98 and for that original diet that, 00:28:38.01\00:28:39.88 when followed has been demonstrated again and again 00:28:39.91\00:28:43.39 not only to make us healthier, 00:28:43.42\00:28:45.42 but happier and contribute to us being holier, more like Jesus. 00:28:45.45\00:28:51.03 Fill us with your Spirit, and guide us in your way. 00:28:51.06\00:28:53.70 I pray that we can live that more abundant life 00:28:53.73\00:28:56.80 promised us by God. 00:28:56.83\00:28:58.57 We thank you today for being with us, 00:28:58.60\00:29:00.07 and we pray, gratefully, 00:29:00.10\00:29:02.17 in Jesus' name. 00:29:02.20\00:29:03.77 Amen. 00:29:03.81\00:29:05.14 >>John: Thank you for joining me today. 00:29:05.17\00:29:06.24 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 00:29:06.27\00:29:08.41 Until then, remember: 00:29:08.44\00:29:10.28 "It is written: 00:29:10.31\00:29:11.85 'Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:29:11.88\00:29:14.62 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" 00:29:14.65\00:29:19.19 ¤[Theme music]¤ 00:29:19.22\00:29:34.20
