I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:37.50\00:00:39.90 Thanks for joining me today. When you come to the Bible, 00:00:39.90\00:00:43.17 you come face to face with the God of heaven. 00:00:43.17\00:00:46.37 A God who is intimately concerned with what's 00:00:46.37\00:00:49.11 going on here, on the earth. God is not an absentee landlord; 00:00:49.11\00:00:52.25 He didn't just wind the earth up like a clock and leave it 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.52 to run and come back when the alarm finally rings. 00:00:55.52\00:00:58.39 God loves this world so much that the Bible says 00:00:58.39\00:01:01.66 He gave His only begotten Son, so that those of us 00:01:01.66\00:01:05.23 who believe in Him should not perish but 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.60 would be separated from sin, joined to Him, 00:01:07.60\00:01:11.50 and receive everlasting life. My guest today is 00:01:11.50\00:01:14.70 Dr. David DeRose, a doctor of internal medicine 00:01:14.70\00:01:18.41 and a doctor of preventive medicine. 00:01:18.41\00:01:20.81 He comes to us from Compass Health Consultants 00:01:20.81\00:01:23.41 in Northern California. Dr. DeRose, 00:01:23.41\00:01:25.78 thanks for joining me today. DD: Great to be with you, John. 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.78 JB: Jesus came to this earth, the Bible says, 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.45 to give us a more abundant life. Now, for some people that means 00:01:30.45\00:01:34.09 all of one thing and little of anything else. 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.96 But the abundant life that Jesus came to give us was 00:01:36.96\00:01:42.10 balanced life, wasn't it. A balanced life. 00:01:42.10\00:01:46.10 DD: It's interesting you should mention that, because as I 00:01:46.10\00:01:48.40 read through the Gospel of Mark, for example, I see Jesus very 00:01:48.40\00:01:52.24 concerned that we not go to extremes. 00:01:52.24\00:01:55.64 Let me give you an example. In March chapter 3, Jesus is 00:01:55.64\00:02:00.48 dealing with something that I believe we deal with today, 00:02:00.48\00:02:03.25 and that is many people who take the name of Christian-- 00:02:03.25\00:02:08.09 they take the name of God fearing-- 00:02:08.09\00:02:11.33 they're doing a disservice to the God of heaven. 00:02:11.33\00:02:14.96 I mean, in Jesus' day, think about it. 00:02:14.96\00:02:19.37 In Mark 3, Jesus comes in contact with a man 00:02:19.37\00:02:25.44 with a withered hand. It's interesting. 00:02:25.44\00:02:28.41 The context is He's in the synagogue. 00:02:28.41\00:02:31.15 He's in a place of worship-- JB: He's right there in church. 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.42 DD: That's right. He's there in church. 00:02:33.42\00:02:35.68 And yet it says, in verse 2, that those who were there 00:02:35.68\00:02:40.32 were watching Him closely, whether He would heal this man 00:02:40.32\00:02:45.26 on the Sabbath so that they would accuse Him. 00:02:45.26\00:02:48.03 The religious leaders don't have a balanced Christian experience. 00:02:48.03\00:02:52.27 They're so focused on "the rules of religious living" 00:02:52.27\00:02:56.94 that they're missing out on what's happening. 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.44 The real drama is this man's physical need. 00:02:59.44\00:03:01.91 JB: They weren't seeing his need anymore, they were so out of 00:03:01.91\00:03:04.78 balance that all they could do was think about circling the 00:03:04.78\00:03:08.92 wagons and defending the rules of the day. 00:03:08.92\00:03:13.05 DD: In the beginning, God gave the Sabbath 00:03:13.05\00:03:15.22 as a day of celebration, a day of rejoicing 00:03:15.22\00:03:18.53 in what God had done. It was humanity's first day, 00:03:18.53\00:03:21.46 their first full day was the Sabbath. 00:03:21.46\00:03:23.73 All they could do is rejoice in not what they had de, 00:03:23.73\00:03:26.84 but what the creator had graciously given them. 00:03:26.84\00:03:30.81 JB: After all, He gave it as a day or rest, 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.84 a day of rejuvenation, a day of fellowship, 00:03:32.84\00:03:34.71 a day of worship. A day off. 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.98 Who doesn't want a day off? DD: But the amazing thing is, 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.68 I think a lot of the reaction, John, goes back 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.42 to the same mentality that Jewish leaders had. 00:03:42.42\00:03:45.69 And they said, "I don't want to be bound about by something." 00:03:45.69\00:03:48.49 This man is bound on the Sabbath. 00:03:48.49\00:03:51.33 And what's amazing is what Jesus does. 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.96 He says, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do 00:03:53.96\00:03:58.30 evil, to save life or to kill." It says the leaders 00:03:58.30\00:04:02.97 remained silent. JB: They couldn't find it within 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.31 themselves to speak the truth because, well, 00:04:05.31\00:04:10.05 they couldn't handle that. DD: It says Jesus looked 00:04:10.05\00:04:12.71 around at them with anger. But His words, that He speaks, 00:04:12.71\00:04:18.09 are words of healing, because as that man stretches out his hand, 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.66 it says he stretched it out and it was made whole 00:04:21.66\00:04:24.66 like the other. Jesus, on the Sabbath, is saying 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.93 this is what Sabbath is about. This is what fellowship with Me 00:04:27.93\00:04:31.13 is about. If you think religion is a bunch 00:04:31.13\00:04:34.50 of rules and restrictions, look at Me, 00:04:34.50\00:04:37.94 the God of the Sabbath. JB: And Jesus said, 00:04:37.94\00:04:40.58 "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father." 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.24 DD: That's right. JB: So if you really want 00:04:43.24\00:04:44.71 to know what God is like, look at Jesus. 00:04:44.71\00:04:46.75 The Sabbath today, as part of this overall subject of living a 00:04:46.75\00:04:50.79 balanced Christian life, is there evidence that it's 00:04:50.79\00:04:54.26 actually good for you? DD: This is amazing. 00:04:54.26\00:04:58.33 Researchers, the Ansons, in Israel 00:04:58.33\00:05:02.86 looked at this question. They were looking more broadly, 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.10 they were trying to look over a period of 10 years, 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.97 a full decade, looking at everyone 00:05:08.97\00:05:11.51 living in Israel. And they were asking a question: 00:05:11.51\00:05:15.01 Would they see any rhythmicity to death rates? 00:05:15.01\00:05:20.05 Would there be times of year during the Day of Atonement, 00:05:20.05\00:05:22.95 Yom Kippur. Maybe the death rate would 00:05:22.95\00:05:24.95 go down or it would go up. Would there be any relationship 00:05:24.95\00:05:27.06 to the weekly Sabbath, for example. 00:05:27.06\00:05:28.82 So they're looking at this. Ten years of time, 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.03 they analyze it. Computer analysis, published 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.70 in the medical literature. They titled their study 00:05:33.70\00:05:37.87 "Death Rests a While." What they found is that on the 00:05:37.87\00:05:44.91 Sabbath, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, 00:05:44.91\00:05:50.01 the Bible Sabbath, death rates plummet. 00:05:50.01\00:05:55.55 But not in everyone. You see, just like Sunday is the 00:05:55.55\00:06:00.42 day of rest in many places in the world, it's a day off, 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.79 it's a holiday for everyone regardless of what their 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.39 religious beliefs are-- at the time they wee doing this, 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.20 the day of rest in Israel was Saturday. 00:06:09.20\00:06:12.23 So whether you were a Jew or a Palestinian, you were off work 00:06:12.23\00:06:16.44 on that seventh day. So they asked a question: 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.84 Well, is it just a phenomenon of people not working? 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.71 No drop in death rates for the Palestinians. 00:06:22.71\00:06:26.78 JB: Only for those people who were observing the Sabbath from 00:06:26.78\00:06:29.72 a spiritual point of view, as an expression 00:06:29.72\00:06:32.39 of their relationship with God. DD: Whether that's the whole 00:06:32.39\00:06:36.02 explanation, or even the secular Jews that were still bonding 00:06:36.02\00:06:39.49 in community on that day. Because, when they wrote the 00:06:39.49\00:06:42.80 article in the medical journal they didn't make a big 00:06:42.80\00:06:45.37 point about the spirituality of the day, 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.94 but its social connectedness. And so it's quite interesting. 00:06:47.94\00:06:51.67 Also, you'll find this interesting, John. 00:06:51.67\00:06:53.91 The young children, less than 5 years of age, 00:06:53.91\00:06:57.78 they had no decrease in mortality. 00:06:57.78\00:07:01.02 So presumably only those that could fully appreciate what this 00:07:01.02\00:07:06.22 day of rest meant got the benefit. 00:07:06.22\00:07:08.49 JB: Sabbath rest is just part of rest as a whole. 00:07:08.49\00:07:12.93 It's important that people who are wanting to be well 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.66 physically and spiritually and emotionally take time to rest. 00:07:15.66\00:07:19.23 DD: That's right. JB: How important is rest? 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.80 DD: Well, rest is hugely important. 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.81 Most of the research we see is on daily rest. 00:07:23.81\00:07:27.18 Getting that adequate sleep, which for most people is seven 00:07:27.18\00:07:30.01 to eight hours, maybe eight and a half hours in some cases. 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.65 Even more sleep than that may be deleterious, but many of us are 00:07:32.65\00:07:36.75 short-changing ourselves on sleep. 00:07:36.75\00:07:39.32 It's messing up our hormonal rhythms, ramping up 00:07:39.32\00:07:42.39 stress hormone levels, increasing rates of diabetes, 00:07:42.39\00:07:45.13 high blood pressure, heart disease, 00:07:45.13\00:07:46.86 heart rhythm problems, mental health issues. 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.66 The list goes on and on. JB: Except, you know someone's 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.47 going to say, oh but I'm a night person, and I find that 00:07:51.47\00:07:54.40 once the kids go to bed and it's 10:30 at night, 00:07:54.40\00:07:56.07 I'm productive until 2 in the morning, and then I've got 00:07:56.07\00:07:58.64 to get up at 6 and go to work. DD: Well, there's just as few 00:07:58.64\00:08:01.11 interruptions early in the morning as there are 00:08:01.11\00:08:02.98 late at night. And the interesting thing is if 00:08:02.98\00:08:05.71 you look at hormonal rhythms in the body, like melatonin 00:08:05.71\00:08:08.72 and growth hormone-- which are two of 00:08:08.72\00:08:10.55 the hormones that restore us from the wear and tear of the 00:08:10.55\00:08:13.42 day-- those hormones are made best early in the night. 00:08:13.42\00:08:17.53 So getting to bed before midnight seems to have some 00:08:17.53\00:08:20.60 unique benefits. JB: Excellent. 00:08:20.60\00:08:22.33 So if we're living a balanced life, we've got to get rest. 00:08:22.33\00:08:24.73 And God built into our religious experience rest, when He wrote 00:08:24.73\00:08:28.34 the Ten Commandments. DD: That's right. 00:08:28.34\00:08:29.90 JB: Okay, in a moment let's talk about this idea of a balance 00:08:29.90\00:08:33.17 being moderation in all things. Don't go away. 00:08:33.17\00:08:35.81 I'll be back with Dr. DeRose; we'll have more 00:08:35.81\00:08:37.91 in just a moment. 00:08:37.91\00:08:39.85 ¤ [Gentle Music] ¤ >: Every Word is a one-minute 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.78 Bible-based daily devotional presented by 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.29 Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.79 for busy people like you. The Bible says weekly Sabbath 00:09:26.63\00:09:29.96 rest is a memorial of Jesus' creative power 00:09:29.96\00:09:33.13 and His power to recreate. And it's also good for you. 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.74 For Jesus, it was indispensable, and not simply because 00:09:36.74\00:09:40.38 He was Jewish. Jesus saw the blessing of that 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.28 weekly time with God and the benefit of stepping back 00:09:43.28\00:09:45.85 from the busyness of life. And that's something that's 00:09:45.85\00:09:48.58 good for all of us. I'm John Bradshaw 00:09:48.58\00:09:51.69 for It Is Written. Let's live today by every word. 00:09:51.69\00:09:55.86 JB: This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw. 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.56 Thanks for joining me today. My guest today is 00:10:00.56\00:10:02.70 Dr. David DeRose. We're talking about balance in 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.63 the Christian experience, and looking at how that balance 00:10:05.63\00:10:08.44 promotes physical and spiritual health. 00:10:08.44\00:10:11.97 A moment ago I said that I would challenge this idea that some 00:10:11.97\00:10:15.14 people have that moderation means a little of everything, 00:10:15.14\00:10:19.45 or not overdoing it in certain areas of our life. 00:10:19.45\00:10:23.75 Now, we can see-- and you mentioned a moment ago-- 00:10:23.75\00:10:27.22 getting the right amount of rest means getting enough 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.29 and not too much. Too much is bad for you. 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.79 But how about when people say, "Well, I drink, but not a lot. 00:10:31.79\00:10:37.27 Everything in moderation. Just a little, 00:10:37.27\00:10:39.53 I'm a social drinker perhaps." Everybody would acknowledge, too 00:10:39.53\00:10:43.04 much alcohol bad for a person. But how much is too much? 00:10:43.04\00:10:47.11 DD: If you have an addictive relationship with something, 00:10:47.11\00:10:49.61 whether it nicotine or alcohol, pretty clear-cut that your 00:10:49.61\00:10:54.02 best path to success-- and some people would say 00:10:54.02\00:10:56.75 your only path to success-- is making a complete 00:10:56.75\00:11:00.09 break with the things that were pulling you down. 00:11:00.09\00:11:03.96 But beyond that, we can talk about things like 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.23 alcohol as well as other things that are often considered 00:11:06.23\00:11:09.23 popular in "moderation" that have some downsides 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.93 that most people are totally ignoring. 00:11:12.93\00:11:14.94 JB: What are the downsides about alcohol that people 00:11:14.94\00:11:17.41 are overlooking? DD: Well one, when it comes to 00:11:17.41\00:11:19.94 alcohol, is actually its risk of malignancy. 00:11:19.94\00:11:23.55 Cancer rates are clearly linked to even moderate drinking. 00:11:23.55\00:11:27.78 Classic scenario is breast cancer in women. 00:11:27.78\00:11:30.85 We're talking about a few drinks a week measurably increasing the 00:11:30.85\00:11:34.26 risk of breast cancer in women. JB: That's a significant thing 00:11:34.26\00:11:37.43 because there are all kinds of women who would think it's okay 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.59 to have a little wine here or there, or one drink a day, 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.30 and yet a few drinks a week raise measurably the risk 00:11:42.30\00:11:46.47 of breast cancer. DD: It's not just 00:11:46.47\00:11:47.97 a women's issue. Not all that long ago, 00:11:47.97\00:11:51.27 a huge European study called EPIC, 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.64 the European Perspective Investigation into Cancer and 00:11:53.64\00:11:56.68 Nutrition looked into alcohol intake and cancer risk. 00:11:56.68\00:12:00.62 And in the report the author said, in so many words, 00:12:00.62\00:12:04.35 there is no safe level of alcohol consumption 00:12:04.35\00:12:08.19 when it comes to cancer. JB: Now, 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.29 people think about nicotine. There are few people who would 00:12:10.29\00:12:14.23 say, "Well, a little isn't going to hurt you." 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.30 But evidently there are some. DD: Well, there are some 00:12:16.30\00:12:19.13 actual benefits to nicotine. For example, we know that people 00:12:19.13\00:12:23.67 that use nicotine have less of a serious inflammatory bowel 00:12:23.67\00:12:28.31 condition known as chronic ulcerative colitis. 00:12:28.31\00:12:31.41 JB: I wasn't expecting you to talk about benefits of nicotine, 00:12:31.41\00:12:33.92 being a physician and all, but that's fascinating. 00:12:33.92\00:12:36.08 DD: But let me tell you the flip side. 00:12:36.08\00:12:37.49 JB: But the flip side of that is-- 00:12:37.49\00:12:39.12 DD: There's another serious inflammatory bowel condition 00:12:39.12\00:12:41.89 that is more pervasive, affects more of the bowel, 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.99 than ulcerative colitis. That just affects the colon. 00:12:44.99\00:12:47.30 There's something called Crohn's disease. 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.33 It is also related to nicotine, but its risk is increased. 00:12:49.33\00:12:54.47 So, I don't know of any gastroenterologists, 00:12:54.47\00:12:57.21 intestinal specialists, that are recommending 00:12:57.21\00:12:59.27 as a preventive to use nicotine. Of course, it's a risk factor 00:12:59.27\00:13:03.24 for gastritis and ulcers and other things as well. 00:13:03.24\00:13:06.68 The point here simply is this, John: If we have a myopic 00:13:06.68\00:13:10.79 enough vision, and I suffer from myopia-- nearsightedness-- 00:13:10.79\00:13:14.79 but if we apply that problem to our look at certain lifestyle 00:13:14.79\00:13:20.50 factors we could say, oh yeah, there's some good in this. 00:13:20.50\00:13:23.83 But we don't want to settle for that, we want to look at 00:13:23.83\00:13:25.77 the big picture. JB: It seems that every time you 00:13:25.77\00:13:28.00 turn around you hear about the benefits of drinking red wine. 00:13:28.00\00:13:31.04 Tell me about these so-called benefits and 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.38 where the benefit really is. DD: Well, go back to Europe. 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.75 The Oxford vegetarian study. Looking at people 00:13:36.75\00:13:39.81 on a healthy diet, zero heart benefits from 00:13:39.81\00:13:45.19 moderate alcohol consumption. Nothing. No benefit. 00:13:45.19\00:13:48.76 Now, having said that, in America if you look at a person 00:13:48.76\00:13:51.43 on the average phytochemically depleted diet-- 00:13:51.43\00:13:56.30 in plain English, that means they're not eating 00:13:56.30\00:13:58.17 enough fruits and vegetables. There are things in alcoholic 00:13:58.17\00:14:02.84 beverages that have benefit. After all, every alcoholic 00:14:02.84\00:14:06.61 beverage I know is made from a plant that God gave us. 00:14:06.61\00:14:09.58 Okay? JB: That's right. 00:14:09.58\00:14:11.08 DD: So there's some good things in it. 00:14:11.08\00:14:12.58 So if you're not eating enough fruits and vegetables, there's 00:14:12.58\00:14:14.55 some evidence that moderate alcohol consumption-- 00:14:14.55\00:14:17.55 if you're sure you can keep it moderate-- might decrease 00:14:17.55\00:14:20.59 your risk of heart disease. But it will still increase your 00:14:20.59\00:14:23.22 risk of high triglycerides and high blood pressure and cancer 00:14:23.22\00:14:27.13 and gastrointestinal problems and cirrhosis and mental 00:14:27.13\00:14:30.03 health issues. JB: And so there's benefit on 00:14:30.03\00:14:31.83 the one hand and real problems on the other. 00:14:31.83\00:14:34.50 DD: And the benefit is only if you're on a poor lifestyle. 00:14:34.50\00:14:37.34 So I tell patients, and I tell people when I'm lecturing. 00:14:37.34\00:14:40.08 I say, "You don't want to be on a poor lifestyle so that 00:14:40.08\00:14:42.61 alcohol would help you." JB: Right. 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.61 Now, there's something that many people aren't getting enough of. 00:14:44.61\00:14:46.95 Lots of people are getting too much alcohol, but if you're 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.42 looking to live a balanced life many people are not getting 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.95 enough exercise. You can't really say, 00:14:51.95\00:14:54.96 "Well, I got my five minutes of exercise to day." 00:14:54.96\00:14:57.63 But how do we get enough exercise when we're just 00:14:57.63\00:14:59.36 too busy to get exercise. What do you do? 00:14:59.36\00:15:01.50 DD: I tell people, look at exercise as an investment. 00:15:01.50\00:15:05.17 And it pays you interest and dividends right away. 00:15:05.17\00:15:10.27 You're going to be more productive if you take 30 00:15:10.27\00:15:13.38 minutes out of your day-- I mean, 00:15:13.38\00:15:15.84 you may need to work up to it, I mean 30 minutes 00:15:15.84\00:15:17.65 may be too much for someone-- but if you work up 00:15:17.65\00:15:20.12 to getting significant amounts of exercise on a daily basis, 00:15:20.12\00:15:23.32 your mind will be clearer, your energy level 00:15:23.32\00:15:25.82 will be better, you will be more productive. 00:15:25.82\00:15:27.59 You're not wasting time in exercise, 00:15:27.59\00:15:29.69 you're investing time. JB: What are the best forms of 00:15:29.69\00:15:31.59 exercise a person can get? DD: Probably the single best 00:15:31.59\00:15:34.10 category of exercise, looking broadly 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.23 at the literature, is useful work. 00:15:36.23\00:15:39.90 Doing it outdoors is preferable. So, getting out in the garden, 00:15:39.90\00:15:44.44 chopping wood, pushing a lawn mower, 00:15:44.44\00:15:47.41 these things engage the mind, 00:15:47.41\00:15:49.34 they have a level of rest and stress relief that's not 00:15:49.34\00:15:53.62 afforded by walking on that treadmill while you're 00:15:53.62\00:15:56.62 watching CNN. JB: Walking on the treadmill 00:15:56.62\00:15:58.95 is going to be okay, right? DD: It's okay. 00:15:58.95\00:16:01.46 It gives you benefit. JB: Anaerobic exercise 00:16:01.46\00:16:03.69 that you get, that's all right. DD: It gives you 00:16:03.69\00:16:05.86 aerobic exercise. JB: Aerobic rather, 00:16:05.86\00:16:07.60 not anaerobic. But the very best, 00:16:07.60\00:16:09.76 what I'm hearing you say-- and we've discussed this 00:16:09.76\00:16:11.87 before-- is exercise that engages or benefits 00:16:11.87\00:16:16.67 the mind as well as the body. And that's a concept that's 00:16:16.67\00:16:20.01 foreign to a lot of people. Exercise where your mind is 00:16:20.01\00:16:23.35 distracted from the stressors of daily life and is connected to 00:16:23.35\00:16:28.35 those things that are going to give you a mental and an 00:16:28.35\00:16:30.99 emotional rest as well. DD: But it goes beyond that, 00:16:30.99\00:16:33.92 because not only are you distracted from problem. 00:16:33.92\00:16:37.33 When you're done with a 30-minute session on the 00:16:37.33\00:16:39.76 treadmill and you look back at the treadmill, 00:16:39.76\00:16:42.03 nothing's changed. But when you look at that 00:16:42.03\00:16:45.30 unchopped wood, and you see a pile of chopped wood; 00:16:45.30\00:16:48.54 when you see the plants planted in the garden, 00:16:48.54\00:16:50.94 there's a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment 00:16:50.94\00:16:53.61 that you don't get with the other forms of exercise. 00:16:53.61\00:16:55.98 JB: Right. So being balanced, 00:16:55.98\00:16:57.95 exercise should benefit you physically and emotionally 00:16:57.95\00:17:02.52 and ultimately spiritually. Correct? 00:17:02.52\00:17:04.65 DD: Yes. And many people have found that 00:17:04.65\00:17:06.25 some of their best thinking, whether it's spiritual or 00:17:06.25\00:17:09.16 creative work, happens when they're out engaged, 00:17:09.16\00:17:12.03 doing something. JB: Somebody that's 00:17:12.03\00:17:14.00 overweight-- and they know they are; 00:17:14.00\00:17:15.50 morbidly obese; just big, big big-- 00:17:15.50\00:17:18.47 what do they do? Where do they begin? 00:17:18.47\00:17:20.67 What should they do in order to regain their health and live 00:17:20.67\00:17:24.31 a balanced life? DD: One of the things that Jesus 00:17:24.31\00:17:26.91 said to a woman who was overcome with a sense of sin was 00:17:26.91\00:17:31.75 "Neither do I condemn you." And I think, 00:17:31.75\00:17:35.48 in the Christian world, we have this blessing of 00:17:35.48\00:17:39.49 realizing that no matter what we look like, our acceptance 00:17:39.49\00:17:43.83 with Jesus isn't the issue. If we start from that 00:17:43.83\00:17:47.83 perspective, that can empower us. 00:17:47.83\00:17:49.63 Because many people are so pressed down. 00:17:49.63\00:17:52.40 I mean, obesity is one of those things that you can't hide 00:17:52.40\00:17:55.27 from and everyone sees it. So, if we start treating people 00:17:55.27\00:17:59.27 as Jesus treated them, and if we see ourselves as Jesus sees us, 00:17:59.27\00:18:05.58 this can free us to embrace lifestyle change, 00:18:05.58\00:18:09.65 not as a burden but as a blessing. 00:18:09.65\00:18:12.35 JB: Instead of a radical change in what you eat, you might just 00:18:12.35\00:18:16.36 want to start making incremental healthy changes so that you get 00:18:16.36\00:18:18.99 to the place where what you eat isn't packing on the pounds, 00:18:18.99\00:18:21.83 but it's helping you take pounds off. 00:18:21.83\00:18:24.43 DD: I often tell people, I would rather them 00:18:24.43\00:18:26.67 make a few small changes that they plan to stick with 00:18:26.67\00:18:30.14 for the rest of their life than to make a bunch of huge 00:18:30.14\00:18:33.14 changes that they have no intention of embracing 00:18:33.14\00:18:37.41 on a lifelong basis. JB: And I would encourage 00:18:37.41\00:18:39.78 someone to do this: to claim the promises of God. 00:18:39.78\00:18:41.85 In Philippians it says, "It is God who works in you, 00:18:41.85\00:18:46.12 both to will and to do for his good pleasure." 00:18:46.12\00:18:48.12 So when we're thinking about living a balanced life, 00:18:48.12\00:18:50.13 no matter where we're starting from, it's possible to do 00:18:50.13\00:18:52.63 because Christ is with us. A balanced life. 00:18:52.63\00:18:55.96 God's gift to you. This is what He offers you, 00:18:55.96\00:18:58.30 and it's going to be productive and blessed. 00:18:58.30\00:19:01.17 I'll have more with Dr. David DeRose 00:19:01.17\00:19:03.17 in just a moment. 00:19:03.17\00:19:04.54 ¤ [Musical Interlude]] ¤ 00:19:05.44\00:19:08.54 JB: The Bible is known for its power to transform lives 00:19:14.55\00:19:17.25 spiritually, but does it offer insight for physical 00:19:17.25\00:19:21.72 transformation as well? Now, Dr. David DeRose, 00:20:54.82\00:20:57.25 I'm so grateful you're here with me today. 00:20:57.25\00:20:59.09 And I just want to ask, what's the role of faith 00:20:59.09\00:21:01.09 in God, or trust in divine power, 00:21:01.09\00:21:03.26 in living a healthy, balanced life? 00:21:03.26\00:21:05.19 DD: Well, one of the big benefits is actually where 00:21:05.19\00:21:07.60 our focus is. You know, we mentioned earlier 00:21:07.60\00:21:10.37 in this account in Mark 3 about how it's said that Jesus looked 00:21:10.37\00:21:14.97 around at the religious leaders with anger. 00:21:14.97\00:21:19.17 The reason I singled that out is many people in Christian circles 00:21:19.17\00:21:22.34 haven't heeded Paul's admonition where he says, 00:21:22.34\00:21:26.15 "Be ye angry and sin not." We often label things, 00:21:26.15\00:21:30.85 in the Christian environment, apart from how God 00:21:30.85\00:21:33.59 labels them. When we see that Jesus had 00:21:33.59\00:21:37.09 emotions, real human emotions, He was angry at people who 00:21:37.09\00:21:41.36 weren't embracing God's values. For us to have such emotions 00:21:41.36\00:21:47.60 is not wrong. This actually may be showing 00:21:47.60\00:21:50.74 that our heart is beating in harmony with God. 00:21:50.74\00:21:53.94 And so as we have a trusting, faith walk with Jesus, 00:21:53.94\00:21:58.81 we will begin to see things with His perspective. 00:21:58.81\00:22:01.68 And those things that sometimes we criticize ourselves for or 00:22:01.68\00:22:04.99 that others would be critical of us over, we can actually see 00:22:04.99\00:22:09.19 that we're actually walking with Jesus, sharing His burden 00:22:09.19\00:22:13.43 for the world. JB: A lot of social issues today 00:22:13.43\00:22:15.36 are looked at very relativistically. 00:22:15.36\00:22:17.60 Well, that's your opinion. This is my opinion. 00:22:17.60\00:22:19.30 My opinion is shaped by this and that. 00:22:19.30\00:22:21.57 But really, in life and in life's great issues, what we're 00:22:21.57\00:22:24.71 striving to do is to see things as He sees them. 00:22:24.71\00:22:27.74 How does God see a certain thing. 00:22:27.74\00:22:30.01 What's the role of prayer in a healthy life, a balanced life? 00:22:30.01\00:22:33.01 DD: Well, you can't get away from the subject of prayer 00:22:33.01\00:22:35.02 in Mark's Gospel. We've been talking about that 00:22:35.02\00:22:37.59 off and on for some time, you and I, in our dialogues. 00:22:37.59\00:22:41.29 And, in March chapter 1, verse 35. 00:22:41.29\00:22:44.46 And, what I love about Mark's Gospel is it doesn't start 00:22:44.46\00:22:47.93 with Jesus' birth. I mean, that's important, 00:22:47.93\00:22:50.47 but it starts with the power of the Word. 00:22:50.47\00:22:52.27 John the Baptist is preaching and Jesus Himself realizes 00:22:52.27\00:22:56.71 the power of the Word. God's communication. 00:22:56.71\00:22:59.41 And so in Mark 1:35, Jesus is taking Himself away from all the 00:22:59.41\00:23:05.15 pressures, coming into the presence of His Father. 00:23:05.15\00:23:09.32 It's a powerful example for me. For all of us. 00:23:09.32\00:23:12.65 That if I want to see with Jesus' eyes, before-- I mean, 00:23:12.65\00:23:16.39 today it's so easy. You get up, you can have all 00:23:16.39\00:23:18.83 kinds of words bombarding your mind. 00:23:18.83\00:23:20.73 You can read all kinds of things. 00:23:20.73\00:23:22.66 Focus on that relationship with Jesus. 00:23:22.66\00:23:25.93 JB: Ultimately, in making decisions to live a balanced 00:23:25.93\00:23:29.20 life we have to come face to face with the idea that our 00:23:29.20\00:23:32.84 choice must be surrendered to God. 00:23:32.84\00:23:37.85 DD: It's true. And what's interesting to me in 00:23:37.85\00:23:39.88 the Gospels is Jesus, when He's in the midst of people who are 00:23:39.88\00:23:44.35 making repeatedly bad choices-- I'm thinking of the disciples. 00:23:44.35\00:23:49.19 They kept focusing what was in it for them. 00:23:49.19\00:23:52.86 You know, who was going to be the greatest. 00:23:52.86\00:23:54.96 But Jesus didn't abandon them. But they stayed in communion 00:23:54.96\00:24:01.47 with the Master. So if I'm focusing, 00:24:01.47\00:24:04.71 like the disciples, on walking with Jesus, 00:24:04.71\00:24:06.61 even though my decisions may be terrible. 00:24:06.61\00:24:08.61 Jesus may have to knock me over the head. 00:24:08.61\00:24:10.78 You know, say, what are you doing? 00:24:10.78\00:24:13.18 He's going to get my attention sooner or later. 00:24:13.18\00:24:15.78 I'm molded into His image as I spend time with Him. 00:24:15.78\00:24:19.85 JB: Yeah. There are some wonderful 00:24:19.85\00:24:21.72 verses in the Bible. I mentioned one before, "It is 00:24:21.72\00:24:25.09 God who works in you both to will and to do 00:24:25.09\00:24:27.50 for his good pleasure." That was Philippians 2:13. 00:24:27.50\00:24:30.27 "Don't you know that to whom you yield yourself servants to obey, 00:24:30.27\00:24:33.34 his servants you are to whom you obey, whether of sin 00:24:33.34\00:24:36.50 unto death or obedience unto righteousness." 00:24:36.50\00:24:38.47 You read that in Romans 6. "You are the servant of who 00:24:38.47\00:24:40.81 you choose to serve." "I'm crucified with Christ, 00:24:40.81\00:24:44.38 nevertheless I live. Not I but Christ lives in me." 00:24:44.38\00:24:49.95 And if I'm looking to live a balanced life, to eat better or 00:24:49.95\00:24:54.09 right, to pray as God would have me pray, to spend time in the 00:24:54.09\00:24:59.23 Word of God, to rest, even to enjoy Sabbath rest with God and 00:24:59.23\00:25:04.67 get my life kind of right-side up, my will must be 00:25:04.67\00:25:10.71 yielded to His will. You know, at the beginning of 00:25:10.71\00:25:13.94 Daniel 1, they find themselves down there in Babylon. 00:25:13.94\00:25:17.55 The king serves them the food. "Oh, no, not for me." 00:25:17.55\00:25:19.98 But before that, he had purposed in his heart that he wouldnít 00:25:19.98\00:25:22.98 defile himself with a portion of the king's meat. 00:25:22.98\00:25:25.09 Purposing in our heart, in our minds, 00:25:25.09\00:25:27.26 that it would be God's will being done and not ours. 00:25:27.26\00:25:30.09 DD: It's a powerful concept, because Daniel's secret was he 00:25:30.09\00:25:34.50 realized his body was a temple. That word "defile," 00:25:34.50\00:25:37.50 where Daniel said he would not defile himself. 00:25:37.50\00:25:39.87 You don't defile the dirt. You can only defile something 00:25:39.87\00:25:42.94 that's holy. Daniel is using sanctuary 00:25:42.94\00:25:45.94 or temple language. And so Paul picks up on this 00:25:45.94\00:25:49.58 theme, when he's writing to the Corinthian church, speaking 00:25:49.58\00:25:52.35 about our bodies being a temple. If I realize that, John, 00:25:52.35\00:25:55.65 then this is going to help me when it comes to making 00:25:55.65\00:25:58.82 those good decisions. I'm just not my own. 00:25:58.82\00:26:00.89 Like you said, I'm bought with a price. 00:26:00.89\00:26:03.53 JB: We belong to God. We want His will to be done, 00:26:03.53\00:26:06.06 not just so a bunch of healthy people can end up in the lake of 00:26:06.06\00:26:10.63 fire, but that with out healthy body we'll have a clear mind; 00:26:10.63\00:26:15.20 we'll hear the Word of God; we'll know God as He wants us to 00:26:15.20\00:26:17.94 know Him; and we'll be His not just now but forever. 00:26:17.94\00:26:22.41 And forever's going to be here sooner than we think. 00:26:22.41\00:26:24.41 DD: Right. JB: Dr. DeRose, thanks. 00:26:24.41\00:26:26.08 It's been a pleasure, a real joy. 00:26:26.08\00:26:27.85 I'm grateful for your being here. 00:26:27.85\00:26:29.95 Thanks for joining me today. DD: Thank you. 00:26:29.95\00:26:31.75 JB: And before we go, we'd like to pray with you and ask that 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.86 God would give you the blessing of a balanced life, and that's a 00:26:33.86\00:26:36.39 life lived completely in God. Real balance is found in an 00:26:36.39\00:26:41.56 entire surrender to Him. Let's pray that we can 00:26:41.56\00:26:44.13 experience that ourselves. Let's pray. 00:26:44.13\00:26:46.50 ¤ [Gentle Music] ¤ Our Father in heaven, 00:26:46.50\00:26:48.14 how grateful we are that You offer us 00:26:48.14\00:26:50.84 a more abundant life, not just in this world 00:26:50.84\00:26:55.21 but also in the world to come.
