Thanks for joining me. 00:00:47.96\00:00:50.23 In the Bible in John Chapter 9 there's a remarkable 00:00:50.23\00:00:53.23 story of healing. 00:00:53.23\00:00:54.50 You know, Jesus actually spent more time healing than 00:00:54.50\00:00:56.96 preaching. 00:00:56.96\00:00:57.96 There were times Jesus would go into a village 00:00:57.96\00:00:59.96 or villages and every one in the village who was sick 00:00:59.96\00:01:02.53 would be healed by Jesus. 00:01:02.53\00:01:05.10 In this instance, a man who had been blind from birth 00:01:05.10\00:01:08.43 caught Jesus' attention, and Jesus' manner of healing him 00:01:08.43\00:01:12.63 was a little out of the ordinary. 00:01:12.63\00:01:15.80 The Bible says that Jesus spat on the ground and made 00:01:15.80\00:01:18.96 clay of the saliva and then anointed the eyes of the man 00:01:18.96\00:01:23.13 with the clay. 00:01:23.13\00:01:24.20 And then he said to him, go and wash in the Pool 00:01:24.20\00:01:27.70 of Siloam. 00:01:27.70\00:01:28.70 So the man went and washed and he came back seeing. 00:01:28.70\00:01:31.20 Now, the methods might have changed, but the results 00:01:31.20\00:01:34.73 have not. 00:01:34.73\00:01:36.16 Here in India Jesus is still giving sight to the blind 00:01:36.16\00:01:40.63 by working through a remarkable man of vision. 00:01:40.63\00:01:47.33 Dr. Jacob [Prabaka] is an Indian ophthalmologist 00:01:47.33\00:01:49.76 who is working tirelessly to restore 00:01:49.76\00:01:52.20 the vision of some of the world's poorest people. 00:01:52.20\00:01:55.63 And this is no small problem. 00:01:55.63\00:01:58.23 As well as the dubious honor of having more than a third 00:01:58.23\00:02:01.03 of the world's poorest people, almost 40% of the world's 00:02:01.03\00:02:05.13 blind population call India home. 00:02:05.13\00:02:08.26 That means more than 15 million Indians 00:02:08.26\00:02:11.43 are unable to see. 00:02:11.43\00:02:12.66 And most shocking of all, more than 75% of these cases 00:02:12.66\00:02:17.83 could have been avoided or cured. 00:02:17.83\00:02:21.10 So, Dr. Prabaka, together with a team of highly 00:02:21.10\00:02:24.50 skilled medical professionals, is taking 00:02:24.50\00:02:27.23 on the problem one eye at a time. 00:02:27.23\00:02:31.00 [Music] 00:02:31.96\00:02:34.60 >: I have never seen a man that is gifted with hands 00:02:35.50\00:02:38.33 like he is. 00:02:38.33\00:02:39.76 God has blessed him tremendously. 00:02:39.76\00:02:43.13 >: Because he comes from a poor background, he knows 00:02:43.13\00:02:45.70 the poverty And that's why he want to give vision 00:02:45.70\00:02:49.70 to the people. 00:02:49.70\00:02:51.40 He want to help the poor people of this world. 00:02:51.40\00:02:54.26 >: [Foreign blind so that they can 00:03:04.83\00:03:11.13 work and have a job, take care of their family. 00:03:11.13\00:03:15.43 JB: Remarkable words of praise indeed for a man's 00:03:15.43\00:03:20.43 whose early beginnings were anything but remarkable. 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.70 [Music] Jacob Prabaka: I was born 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.70 in a remote village on the east coast of, of South India. 00:03:26.70\00:03:32.03 It's about, um, three or four kilometers from the--the coast 00:03:32.03\00:03:36.03 of bay of Begal It's really a country life. 00:03:36.03\00:03:40.63 They have beautiful rivers passing by, the backwaters, 00:03:40.63\00:03:44.46 the green fields with, uh, rugged roads right in front 00:03:44.46\00:03:46.83 of my home. 00:03:46.83\00:03:50.30 We did not have electricity. 00:03:50.30\00:03:52.13 The well was, uh, situated about four or five homes 00:03:52.13\00:03:55.06 away from our house. 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.53 These homes are made of mud walls, mud floors, 00:03:57.53\00:04:01.30 and thatch roofs. 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.53 Utter poverty. 00:04:03.53\00:04:05.03 As a child there is nothing much to look forward to. 00:04:05.03\00:04:09.60 JB: But despite the extreme poverty Jacob and his family 00:04:09.60\00:04:14.16 faced, they were still able to find simple joys in life. 00:04:14.16\00:04:18.80 JP: Raised in a, a family of, uh, eight siblings 00:04:18.80\00:04:22.96 and five of them sisters who actually took care of me 00:04:22.96\00:04:27.46 and raised me. 00:04:27.46\00:04:28.46 It was a very, very joyful thing to have a large 00:04:28.46\00:04:33.70 family. 00:04:33.70\00:04:34.70 I had all the affection that a, a boy could receive. 00:04:34.70\00:04:39.63 My mother delivered all the children in my home, 00:04:39.63\00:04:43.50 giving birth to eight children in a village home 00:04:43.50\00:04:48.03 with no physician, with no nurses around. 00:04:48.03\00:04:51.40 It's a miracle. 00:04:51.40\00:04:55.00 [Music] JB: So, how then did 00:04:55.00\00:04:58.23 a boy born and raised in poverty become one of India's 00:04:58.23\00:05:02.80 most respected ophthalmologists? 00:05:02.80\00:05:05.46 JP: If it is not for the grace of God I wouldn't be what I am. 00:05:05.46\00:05:12.50 It's been a--an opportunity for me to go to church 00:05:12.50\00:05:16.43 which my parents attended and the church pastor, 00:05:16.43\00:05:20.00 identified in me some potential. 00:05:20.00\00:05:23.06 JB: In fact, the church pastor saw so much potential 00:05:24.10\00:05:26.93 in Jacob that he secured him a place in a church-run 00:05:26.93\00:05:30.60 boarding school. 00:05:30.60\00:05:32.83 It was a difficult transition. 00:05:32.83\00:05:33.66 JP: I would cry almost every day for my parents. 00:05:33.66\00:05:39.23 I had only one pair of clothes, no shoes. 00:05:39.23\00:05:43.70 I was actually terrified to be left there. 00:05:43.70\00:05:47.00 I was put in grade one because I knew no English. 00:05:47.00\00:05:50.60 I didn't know the English alphabet there. 00:05:50.60\00:05:55.30 I was doing well in grade one and so they give me 00:05:55.30\00:05:59.50 a double promotion, from grade one I was put in grade 00:05:59.50\00:06:03.96 three. 00:06:03.96\00:06:04.96 JB: At the completion of high school Jacob applied 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.40 for medical school, but unable to meet the tuition 00:06:08.40\00:06:11.56 fees, he was turned down. 00:06:11.56\00:06:14.36 But that wasn't the end of his medical aspirations. 00:06:14.36\00:06:18.53 JP: I waited for one year By then I had some 00:06:18.53\00:06:22.83 sponsors who were willing to provide financial assistance 00:06:22.83\00:06:27.66 for me. 00:06:27.66\00:06:28.80 It was in 1985 August that I was chosen 00:06:28.80\00:06:31.63 to join the medical school. 00:06:31.63\00:06:33.03 That was the happiest, uh, moments of my life. 00:06:33.03\00:06:35.26 JB: If you had not had the opportunities you had, 00:06:35.26\00:06:43.63 you wouldn't be an ophthalmologist today. 00:06:43.63\00:06:45.63 You have come to school here, you'd have gone 00:06:45.63\00:06:47.73 to the public high school up the street. 00:06:47.73\00:06:49.90 What would have become of you? 00:06:49.90\00:06:51.90 JP: Some of my classmates who study with me in this very 00:06:51.90\00:06:54.80 same school are working in the field, laborers, 00:06:54.80\00:06:58.70 taking care of the cattle. 00:06:58.70\00:07:00.20 JB: What do they earn? 00:07:00.20\00:07:01.30 JP: Probably they would earn about, um, 200 rupees a day? 00:07:01.30\00:07:07.10 JB: That's, uh, just a little over four American dollars. 00:07:07.10\00:07:09.70 JP: That's right. 00:07:09.70\00:07:10.70 JB: A day. 00:07:10.70\00:07:11.70 JP: That's right. 00:07:11.70\00:07:12.70 JB: They can live on that? 00:07:12.70\00:07:13.70 JP: They can manage on a daily basis and buy their 00:07:13.70\00:07:16.36 food one day at a time. 00:07:16.36\00:07:17.86 JB: If you hadn't had some of the opportunities you had, 00:07:17.86\00:07:23.03 if you were an average kid who took an average 00:07:23.03\00:07:25.46 part, you'd probably today be working in a field 00:07:25.46\00:07:28.26 earning four dollars a day. 00:07:28.26\00:07:29.26 JP: I'm quite certain about that. 00:07:29.26\00:07:31.20 Since the time I was picked up from the school and taken 00:07:31.20\00:07:33.86 to the boarding school I've seen the hand of God 00:07:33.86\00:07:36.70 leading me all through. 00:07:36.70\00:07:39.13 [Music] 00:07:40.50\00:07:43.36 JB: John the Baptist
