[music] >: It has stood the test 00:00:00.80\00:00:08.60 of time. 00:00:08.60\00:00:12.16 God's book, the Bible. 00:00:12.16\00:00:17.10 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:17.10\00:00:22.76 It Is Written, 00:00:22.76\00:00:24.63 sharing hope around the globe. 00:00:25.03\00:00:28.60 JB: This is It Is Written. 00:00:37.10\00:00:38.43 I'm John Bradshaw, thanks for joining me. 00:00:38.43\00:00:41.20 The Bible starts with those magnificent words, "In the 00:00:41.20\00:00:45.00 beginning God created." 00:00:45.00\00:00:47.36 The Bible says He began by creating light, and on He 00:00:47.36\00:00:49.90 went through creation week, making this beautiful world, 00:00:49.90\00:00:53.00 when then was far more beautiful than it is now. 00:00:53.00\00:00:55.96 On the sixth day God created people. 00:00:55.96\00:00:59.80 God made us to inhabit us. 00:00:59.80\00:01:02.53 We were designed to be His dwelling place. 00:01:02.53\00:01:04.53 In fact, He tells us in the Bible that we are 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.33 the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:01:07.33\00:01:09.33 However, there's trouble in the temple. 00:01:09.33\00:01:12.56 Millions of people die prematurely every year from 00:01:12.56\00:01:15.96 lifestyle-related diseases. 00:01:15.96\00:01:17.73 Different choices would result in longer, better 00:01:17.73\00:01:21.63 quality lives, in many cases. 00:01:21.63\00:01:24.13 So, what can we do about the trouble in the temple? 00:01:24.13\00:01:26.76 Are there simple changes that we can make so that we 00:01:26.76\00:01:30.20 would be able to live longer, healthier lives? 00:01:30.20\00:01:32.30 Now, thankfully, there are. 00:01:32.30\00:01:34.23 I spoke with Dr. Brian Schwartz, a cardiologist in 00:01:34.23\00:01:38.23 Kettering, Ohio, and asked him how we could live longer 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.60 and avoid disease, especially heart disease. 00:01:41.60\00:01:45.76 [music] 00:01:45.76\00:01:48.36 JB: What else can we say to people who are 00:01:50.26\00:01:51.50 looking to do something about their heart health? 00:01:51.50\00:01:54.03 BS: Yeah, so if you are a sedentary person, you really 00:01:54.03\00:01:56.60 haven't exercised much, then even starting the basic 00:01:56.60\00:02:00.80 level of exercise--just simply going out 00:02:00.80\00:02:03.00 and walking. 00:02:03.00\00:02:04.10 Walking is one of the healthiest things you can do for 00:02:04.10\00:02:07.10 your heart, but you need to get in about 20 minutes 00:02:07.10\00:02:09.10 a minimum of 3 days a week to get a benefit. 00:02:09.10\00:02:11.10 JB: That's not too hard. 00:02:11.10\00:02:12.10 I'd like to come at this from a slightly different 00:02:12.10\00:02:14.10 angle, 'cause some people say, I know I'm overweight. 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.93 I know therefore that my risk factors are a little 00:02:17.93\00:02:21.10 high, but the mountain just seems so high. 00:02:21.10\00:02:25.36 Now, you're making it sound like from an exercise point 00:02:25.36\00:02:28.03 of view it's not undoable. 00:02:28.03\00:02:29.76 BS: Absolutely. 00:02:29.76\00:02:30.70 It doesn't matter what type of exercise you do, there 00:02:30.70\00:02:33.13 must be something that you take an interest in. 00:02:33.13\00:02:35.86 Walking is one of the very simplest things. 00:02:35.86\00:02:37.93 It doesn't require expensive equipment; it doesn't 00:02:37.93\00:02:40.33 require a gym membership. 00:02:40.33\00:02:41.66 If you've got sleet and rain and snow, you can go walk 00:02:41.66\00:02:45.96 at a local mall, but you can get out and walk 00:02:45.96\00:02:48.43 for just 20 or 30 minutes. 00:02:48.43\00:02:49.43 Now, ideally we'd like you to walk for at least 30 minutes, 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.73 5 days a week. 00:02:52.73\00:02:53.73 That seems to give the best benefit to the heart. 00:02:53.73\00:02:55.73 JB: But you're saying, start somewhere. 00:02:55.73\00:02:57.73 BS: A minimum of 20 minutes, 3 days a week, still gives 00:02:57.73\00:02:59.73 you a great benefit to your heart. 00:02:59.73\00:03:01.80 Just losing 20 pounds will often drop the blood 00:03:01.80\00:03:04.03 pressure by about 20 pounds and drop the bad cholesterol 00:03:04.03\00:03:08.43 by about 10 points. 00:03:08.43\00:03:09.50 Just losing 20 pounds may drop your risk of a heart 00:03:09.50\00:03:12.06 attack by nearly half, just by getting some 00:03:12.06\00:03:14.33 of the weight down. 00:03:14.33\00:03:15.33 You don't even have to get to the ideal range. 00:03:15.33\00:03:17.36 So, just starting to do some of these things. 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.16 I myself am a vegetarian. 00:03:20.16\00:03:22.10 I tell my patients, I don't expect you to do everything 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.26 that I do, but the closer you get to doing that, 00:03:24.26\00:03:26.50 the better off you're going to be. 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.50 JB: Is meat really that bad? 00:03:28.50\00:03:30.20 I mean, this is America, man. 00:03:30.20\00:03:32.36 We were raised killing animals and eating them. 00:03:32.36\00:03:34.73 BS: Exactly right. 00:03:34.73\00:03:35.73 Well, we are learning that there are all kinds 00:03:35.73\00:03:38.96 of consequences to eating meat. 00:03:38.96\00:03:41.40 Environmental impacts, health impacts, 00:03:41.40\00:03:45.43 a lot of the problems with global warming 00:03:45.43\00:03:47.23 can be traced to the factory farms that we do to get 00:03:47.23\00:03:50.23 all this meat. 00:03:50.23\00:03:51.60 There was an article in "Newsweek" last year showing 00:03:51.60\00:03:54.06 that Americans eat 4 times more meat than the rest 00:03:54.06\00:03:57.06 of the world. 00:03:57.06\00:03:58.06 We eat meat, you said we grew up eating meat. 00:03:58.06\00:04:03.70 But it didn't used to be that we had meat with every 00:04:03.70\00:04:05.70 single meal. 00:04:05.70\00:04:06.70 Now, you have meat with breakfast, lunch 00:04:06.70\00:04:08.70 and supper. 00:04:08.70\00:04:09.70 Meat has become the staple of our diet. 00:04:09.70\00:04:11.70 Just reducing it to an occasional thing would be 00:04:11.70\00:04:14.93 very healthy. 00:04:14.93\00:04:16.10 Eliminating it altogether though would be fantastic. 00:04:16.10\00:04:18.96 Meat is calorie-packed; it's full of saturated fat, 00:04:18.96\00:04:23.26 especially red meats. 00:04:23.26\00:04:24.76 We now know from studies that have been published 00:04:24.76\00:04:28.06 that it increases your risk for certain cancers. 00:04:28.06\00:04:30.93 And when you compare groups of patients, or groups 00:04:30.93\00:04:33.96 of people, that are vegetarian versus non-vegetarian, 00:04:33.96\00:04:36.53 the vegetarians live 7 up to 10 years longer than 00:04:36.53\00:04:40.10 non-vegetarians. 00:04:40.10\00:04:41.10 JB: I think that's worth repeating. 00:04:41.10\00:04:43.10 When you compare vegetarians with non-vegetarians, 00:04:43.10\00:04:45.10 the vegetarians are living as long as a decade longer. 00:04:45.10\00:04:47.20 BS: Up to a decade longer. 00:04:47.20\00:04:48.73 JB: And you didn't say you must get rid of it all. 00:04:48.73\00:04:51.66 You said, if you can't go that far, cut it back so 00:04:51.66\00:04:55.23 it's just an occasional thing. 00:04:55.23\00:04:57.23 BS: Yeah, I try to practice the ideal, and even then, 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.76 there's things that I can do better. 00:04:59.76\00:05:01.83 All of us have to make choices. 00:05:01.83\00:05:03.83 Sometimes I'm on a trip and I pick the best choice that 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.93 I have. 00:05:06.93\00:05:07.93 But as far as possible, I try to set the ideal. 00:05:07.93\00:05:11.13 I don't always get my 4 days a week of exercise in, 00:05:11.13\00:05:15.16 but I try to do that. 00:05:15.16\00:05:17.20 I live in a stressful world just like everybody else. 00:05:17.20\00:05:20.46 I have a very stressful job sometimes. 00:05:20.46\00:05:22.56 I get called in the middle of the night to come in 00:05:22.56\00:05:24.56 and treat patients with a heart disease and heart attacks, 00:05:24.56\00:05:27.03 and I have to just drop everything and run in. 00:05:27.03\00:05:29.33 That interferes with your daily life, so we try to do 00:05:29.33\00:05:32.03 these the best we can. 00:05:32.03\00:05:33.43 We have to start somewhere and work toward it, so just 00:05:33.43\00:05:36.90 giving up red meat is a big goal. 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.90 I tell my patients, if you don't want to be a vegetarian, 00:05:39.90\00:05:41.90 just eating fish or chicken that's been baked 00:05:41.90\00:05:43.90 or broiled is better than eating red meat. 00:05:43.90\00:05:46.10 But, if you want to give up fish and chicken and eat 00:05:46.10\00:05:49.50 a plant-based diet, that shows the maximal benefit. 00:05:49.50\00:05:52.06 Then there are vegetarians who decide to give up all 00:05:52.06\00:05:55.10 dairy and become vegan vegetarians, and that seems 00:05:55.10\00:05:57.56 to have even a better benefit. 00:05:57.56\00:05:59.43 They live even longer and have less risk of heart 00:05:59.43\00:06:02.60 disease, less risk of cancer, less risk of a lot of these 00:06:02.60\00:06:05.63 diseases that we suffer under. 00:06:05.63\00:06:07.46 JB: Exercise, diet. 00:06:07.46\00:06:11.43 If we make some modifications there, we will 00:06:11.43\00:06:13.80 benefit our heart health and in a life, in a nation, 00:06:13.80\00:06:18.46 where heart disease is the number one killer, 00:06:18.46\00:06:20.46 this is pretty serious. 00:06:20.46\00:06:21.60 BS: This is huge. 00:06:21.60\00:06:22.60 JB: What else can a person do? 00:06:22.60\00:06:24.23 BS: If you've optimized your diet, you've optimized 00:06:24.23\00:06:28.00 your exercise, if you smoke you definitely want to give up 00:06:28.00\00:06:33.20 smoking, that's huge. 00:06:33.20\00:06:34.66 Do the simple things that you can do. 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.93 There is still a role for medications, 00:06:36.93\00:06:39.13 in some instances. 00:06:39.13\00:06:40.13 If you have a very high cholesterol after going on 00:06:40.13\00:06:43.36 a careful low-fat diet, then it might be reasonable 00:06:43.36\00:06:45.90 to add a medication. 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.70 What is a concern is, I have patients literally come 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.56 in to my office and say, Hey, I want that pill I saw 00:06:50.56\00:06:53.43 advertised on TV. 00:06:53.43\00:06:54.66 JB: What's wrong with that? 00:06:54.66\00:06:55.66 BS: I say, well what pill is that? 00:06:55.66\00:06:57.66 They say, You know, the one that I can still eat my 00:06:57.66\00:06:59.66 chocolate cake, and I just take the pill and it 00:06:59.66\00:07:01.73 neutralizes the cholesterol. 00:07:01.73\00:07:03.90 That seems to be a problem, because we're not dealing 00:07:03.90\00:07:06.06 with the root cause. 00:07:06.06\00:07:07.06 The root cause is partly our genetics but largely what 00:07:07.06\00:07:10.33 we're eating. 00:07:10.33\00:07:11.40 Some of us have missed the boat on preventing 00:07:11.40\00:07:13.46 heart disease. 00:07:13.46\00:07:14.46 We've already had heart surgery, we've already had 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.46 a stint, we already have angina when we walk. 00:07:16.46\00:07:18.53 But the good news now is, by implementing these simple 00:07:18.53\00:07:21.20 measures you can reverse that. 00:07:21.20\00:07:23.93 If you've had one heart attack, you can prevent 00:07:23.93\00:07:26.10 yourself from ever having another heart attack. 00:07:26.10\00:07:28.13 If you've had heart surgery, by following simple 00:07:28.13\00:07:30.96 lifestyle changes you can prevent the need for ever 00:07:30.96\00:07:36.90 having to go through that process again. 00:07:36.90\00:07:40.66 People that are having angina, that need to have 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.66 heart surgery, have been placed in studies 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.16 with Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Estenstein up 00:07:45.16\00:07:48.16 at the Cleveland Clinic. 00:07:48.16\00:07:49.83 And the ones that go on a very fat-limiting diet have 00:07:49.83\00:07:54.66 had reversal of their anginal pains in as low as 2 weeks. 00:07:54.66\00:07:58.06 JB: Two weeks? 00:07:58.06\00:07:59.06 BS: Dr. Estenstein has a series of 18 patients 00:07:59.06\00:08:01.86 that were referred for heart surgery but were turned down 00:08:01.86\00:08:04.63 because they were too high risk to go through 00:08:04.63\00:08:06.73 the surgery. 00:08:06.73\00:08:07.73 So instead, he took those patients, he actually 00:08:07.73\00:08:10.20 brought them to his home where he taught them how 00:08:10.20\00:08:12.30 to eat a plant-based diet that emphasizes absolutely 00:08:12.30\00:08:15.53 no fat. 00:08:15.53\00:08:17.40 In following those patients over the last 15-20 years, 00:08:17.40\00:08:20.56 not a single one of those patients that have stuck 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.86 to that diet has ever had a heart attack. 00:08:22.86\00:08:25.03 JB: Yet they were too sick to have surgery. 00:08:25.03\00:08:27.70 In other words, they were left to die. 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.70 BS: They were left with no hope from the medical 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.70 community. 00:08:31.70\00:08:32.70 JB: And now they're well. 00:08:32.70\00:08:33.70 BS: They may still have some plaques in their arteries, 00:08:33.70\00:08:35.70 but they're not having anginal pain, they're not 00:08:35.70\00:08:39.16 having heart attacks, they're following a very 00:08:39.16\00:08:41.70 careful diet, they're exercising, but they're 00:08:41.70\00:08:43.80 healthier now than they were when they were first diagnosed. 00:08:43.80\00:08:47.00 JB: Is there anything dangerous. 00:08:47.00\00:08:50.06 You know, somebody says, Well, I'm going to take some 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.56 of this on board, but maybe my doctor, he or she might 00:08:53.56\00:08:57.46 advise--you're not talking about anything that has 00:08:57.46\00:09:00.40 any danger attached to it, are you? 00:09:00.40\00:09:03.56 BS: Yes, if you have heart disease and you're getting 00:09:03.56\00:09:05.86 daily anginal chest pains, then you should consult 00:09:05.86\00:09:08.56 with your physician before you start a vigorous exercise 00:09:08.56\00:09:11.03 program. 00:09:11.03\00:09:12.13 If you're diabetic, you need to make sure you monitor 00:09:12.13\00:09:15.03 your blood sugars. 00:09:15.03\00:09:16.03 And if you're even thinking about changing your diet 00:09:16.03\00:09:20.16 and reducing your medications, you need to do that in cohort 00:09:20.16\00:09:23.36 with your physician, with his advice or her advice. 00:09:23.36\00:09:26.40 Some people will still need to be on a low level 00:09:26.40\00:09:28.93 of medication, so that has to be coordinated. 00:09:28.93\00:09:33.56 So don't just suddenly say, huh! 00:09:33.56\00:09:35.86 I'm stopping my medication, I'm going on this careful 00:09:35.86\00:09:37.86 plant-based diet and I'm giving it all up, because you're 00:09:37.86\00:09:40.23 asking for trouble. 00:09:40.23\00:09:41.23 It took many, many years to get to that point. 00:09:41.23\00:09:44.60 It's a slow process to reverse heart disease once 00:09:44.60\00:09:47.53 you have it. 00:09:47.53\00:09:48.53 JB: Number one, nothing dangerous about picking up 00:09:48.53\00:09:50.53 some shoes and taking a 20-minute walk. 00:09:50.53\00:09:53.30 Nothing dangerous about limiting the amount 00:09:53.30\00:09:55.30 of unhealthy food and increasing the amount 00:09:55.30\00:09:57.50 of healthy food. 00:09:57.50\00:09:58.50 That's healthy and that's responsible. 00:09:58.50\00:10:00.50 BS: Absolutely. 00:10:00.50\00:10:01.50 Unless you're actively having symptoms right now, 00:10:01.50\00:10:03.76 you can get out and start doing those simple measures. 00:10:03.76\00:10:05.93 JB: However, something, I think this adds appropriate 00:10:05.93\00:10:10.53 balance to any discussion like this. 00:10:10.53\00:10:13.26 Rome wasn't built in a day, just like your heart disease 00:10:13.26\00:10:16.13 didn't happen overnight. 00:10:16.13\00:10:17.13 People do need to take a medium- to long-term 00:10:17.13\00:10:19.76 approach at this. 00:10:19.76\00:10:20.76 If you want to lose 150 pounds and by this time next 00:10:20.76\00:10:24.33 week you're still 150 pounds overweight, it's a little 00:10:24.33\00:10:26.90 too early to get discouraged. 00:10:26.90\00:10:28.90 BS: Exactly. 00:10:28.90\00:10:29.90 Our bodies are actually fearfully and wonderfully 00:10:29.90\00:10:31.83 made. 00:10:31.83\00:10:32.83 It's amazing how much abuse they can take for many, 00:10:32.83\00:10:35.06 many, many years before these symptoms actually 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.40 start popping up. 00:10:37.40\00:10:38.66 I mentioned that these little fatty streaks occur 00:10:38.66\00:10:40.80 in children. 00:10:40.80\00:10:41.80 By the time people are in their 20s, 40-50-60 percent 00:10:41.80\00:10:44.53 of people have plaque in their arteries to the point 00:10:44.53\00:10:47.86 where half of Americans over the age of 45 have plaque. 00:10:47.86\00:10:51.83 The precursor of heart disease, all sitting there 00:10:51.83\00:10:58.70 in their arteries. 00:10:58.70\00:10:59.70 This all occurs over many, many years: 40-50-60 years, 00:10:59.70\00:11:01.76 so if you're setting off to reverse this process, 00:11:01.76\00:11:03.76 it's also going to be a very gradual process. 00:11:03.76\00:11:06.33 It's not going to all go away. 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.33 But the good news is that even stabilizing the plaque 00:11:08.33\00:11:11.33 that's there, preventing it from getting worse and 00:11:11.33\00:11:13.76 gradually reducing it, you're going to start 00:11:13.76\00:11:16.23 feeling better immediately. 00:11:16.23\00:11:17.26 JB: Is it fair to say that in relation to heart 00:11:17.26\00:11:20.13 disease, that there are many people, and there'll be many 00:11:20.13\00:11:22.96 people watching us right now, who are much sicker 00:11:22.96\00:11:25.73 than they realize? 00:11:25.73\00:11:26.73 BS: Oh, it's like a ticking time bomb. 00:11:26.73\00:11:29.33 So, we mentioned earlier that for some it will be too 00:11:29.33\00:11:32.66 late. 00:11:32.66\00:11:33.66 The first symptom they'll have is a clutch of chest 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.83 pain and they'll collapse on the floor as their heart 00:11:35.83\00:11:37.83 stops beating. 00:11:37.83\00:11:38.83 JB: And they die. 00:11:38.83\00:11:39.83 And they didn't know. 00:11:39.83\00:11:40.83 BS: Unless the paramedics can get to them within 5 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.83 or 6 minutes, somebody does CPR, get them to a hospital 00:11:42.83\00:11:46.26 where that artery can be opened back up, they're not going 00:11:46.26\00:11:48.46 to make it. 00:11:48.46\00:11:49.46 JB: So there are a lot of people right now who are 00:11:49.46\00:11:51.46 in that condition and they just don't know it. 00:11:51.46\00:11:53.46 And they're not going to know--they'll never know. 00:11:53.46\00:11:56.00 Their spouse might know, their children might know, 00:11:56.00\00:11:58.03 but they'll never know because-- BS: Their first 00:11:58.03\00:12:00.13 symptom might be that they died. 00:12:00.13\00:12:02.40 JB: This is something that people really ought to take 00:12:02.40\00:12:05.40 seriously. 00:12:05.40\00:12:06.40 BS: Absolutely. 00:12:06.40\00:12:07.40 JB: Let's talk about this from a spiritual perspective. 00:12:07.40\00:12:09.70 Why does it even matter? 00:12:09.70\00:12:10.73 I mean, in terms of the big picture, we are fearfully 00:12:10.73\00:12:17.80 and wonderfully made. 00:12:17.80\00:12:19.00 In the beginning God. 00:12:19.00\00:12:20.10 On the sixth day He made our grandparents. 00:12:20.10\00:12:24.93 How does this matter spiritually? 00:12:24.93\00:12:26.93 Does this have any connection? 00:12:26.93\00:12:28.96 What connection does this have to our spiritual 00:12:28.96\00:12:31.83 health? 00:12:31.83\00:12:32.83 BS: I think in two ways this relates. 00:12:32.83\00:12:35.33 First of all, we're made in God's image. 00:12:35.33\00:12:37.33 We were designed to reflect His character. 00:12:37.33\00:12:40.60 But we know that our heart, our mind and our bodies 00:12:40.60\00:12:44.76 is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:44.76\00:12:46.80 God wants to communicate with us, to dwell with us, 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.23 and in order to be able to realize that, we need 00:12:50.23\00:12:53.13 a healthy body. 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.46 Particularly the frontal lobes of our brain are known 00:12:54.46\00:12:57.23 to be the spiritual centers of the brain. 00:12:57.23\00:13:00.20 And things like caffeine, like tobacco smoke, 00:13:00.20\00:13:02.66 like lack of exercises, diseases like diabetes and heart 00:13:02.66\00:13:05.90 disease, things that impair the blood flow to that area 00:13:05.90\00:13:08.93 are going to impair our ability to sense spiritual things. 00:13:08.93\00:13:12.43 And, from a further standpoint, you can wind up being 00:13:12.43\00:13:18.76 either somebody who can be of service to our fellow man 00:13:18.76\00:13:22.86 and be out there able to help others, or you 00:13:22.86\00:13:25.80 can become a burden: a burden to your family, 00:13:25.80\00:13:28.10 a burden to society because you haven't taken care 00:13:28.10\00:13:30.40 of yourself. 00:13:30.40\00:13:31.40 So I think it's also a matter a social 00:13:31.40\00:13:33.40 responsibility. 00:13:33.40\00:13:34.40 JB: The Bible says that our bodies are the temple 00:13:34.40\00:13:36.53 of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:36.53\00:13:37.53 BS: That's right. 00:13:37.53\00:13:38.53 JB: If that's the case, then we should be treating Him-- 00:13:38.53\00:13:40.53 BS: I believe that God created us in a way that we 00:13:40.53\00:13:43.80 live under the same laws that govern the whole universe. 00:13:43.80\00:13:47.83 The laws of cause and effect. 00:13:47.83\00:13:50.13 So, to a large degree the things that we do now might 00:13:50.13\00:13:54.20 impact what happens to us later. 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.70 Now, granted there are things outside of our control, 00:13:56.70\00:13:59.00 and nothing can happen to us if God does not allow it. 00:13:59.00\00:14:04.40 He ultimately runs the whole universe and cares about 00:14:04.40\00:14:07.90 even the hairs, knows the number of the hairs 00:14:07.90\00:14:09.96 on our head. 00:14:09.96\00:14:11.13 But we make choices, and as those choices are outside 00:14:11.13\00:14:14.46 of God's will, He doesn't protect us from the consequences 00:14:14.46\00:14:18.40 all the time. 00:14:18.40\00:14:19.40 There is a day in which He's going to make all things 00:14:19.40\00:14:21.40 new, and He does forgive us for our wrongful habits; 00:14:21.40\00:14:24.93 He does forgive for our sins; but many times we bear 00:14:24.93\00:14:27.60 the consequences throughout the rest of our life. 00:14:27.60\00:14:30.40 [music] 00:14:31.60\00:14:34.26 >: In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, 00:14:38.66\00:14:40.43 "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone 00:14:40.43\00:14:43.36 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:14:43.36\00:14:46.96 "Every Word" is a one-minute, Bible-based daily devotional, 00:14:46.96\00:14:50.73 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed 00:14:50.73\00:14:53.73 especially for busy people like you. 00:14:53.73\00:14:56.20 Look for "Every Word" on selected networks, or watch 00:14:56.20\00:14:59.16 it online every day on our website. 00:14:59.16\00:15:01.50 ItIsWritten.com. 00:15:01.50\00:15:03.63 Receive a daily spiritual boost. 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.60 Watch "Every Word." 00:15:05.60\00:15:07.63 You'll be glad you did. 00:15:07.63\00:15:08.63 Here's a sample. 00:15:08.63\00:15:11.00 [music] 00:15:12.63\00:15:15.36 JB: I get asked every now and then about this: 00:15:19.30\00:15:20.66 We're saved by grace through faith. 00:15:20.66\00:15:23.10 Right. 00:15:23.10\00:15:24.10 But then Revelation 22:12 says, "And behold I come 00:15:24.10\00:15:27.03 quickly, and my reward is with me to give every man 00:15:27.03\00:15:30.20 according as his work shall be." 00:15:30.20\00:15:32.93 Sounds to some people as though this is saying we're 00:15:32.93\00:15:34.93 not saved by God's grace but by our works. 00:15:34.93\00:15:36.93 Now, let's look at this carefully. 00:15:36.93\00:15:38.93 John writes that we are judged by our works, not saved 00:15:38.93\00:15:42.26 by our works. 00:15:42.26\00:15:43.26 The point is that our works, how we live our lives, 00:15:43.26\00:15:46.40 demonstrate or give evidence regarding the reality 00:15:46.40\00:15:49.10 of our profession. 00:15:49.10\00:15:50.73 Anyone at all can claim to be a follower of Jesus, 00:15:50.73\00:15:53.93 but it isn't what you say that really matters. 00:15:53.93\00:15:56.73 It's how you live. 00:15:56.73\00:15:57.73 That's where the evidence really is. 00:15:57.73\00:16:00.10 In the judgment, it isn't just a profession God 00:16:00.10\00:16:02.43 is looking for. 00:16:02.43\00:16:03.43 He's looking for the real thing. 00:16:03.43\00:16:05.46 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:16:05.46\00:16:07.90 Let's live today by every word. 00:16:07.90\00:16:10.93 JB: This is It Is Written. 00:16:12.66\00:16:13.53 Thanks for joining me today. 00:16:13.53\00:16:14.86 There's trouble in the temple. 00:16:14.86\00:16:16.06 The Bible says our bodies are the temple 00:16:16.06\00:16:18.80 of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:18.80\00:16:19.80 But thankfully God has given us in many cases ways that 00:16:19.80\00:16:22.93 we can reverse that trouble. 00:16:22.93\00:16:24.36 Here's more of my discussion with cardiologist 00:16:24.36\00:16:27.76 Dr. Brian Schwartz. 00:16:27.76\00:16:29.73 [Music] 00:16:30.66\00:16:33.00 This is a subject that comes close to home for me, 00:16:33.86\00:16:36.03 because my own father had heart disease, 00:16:36.03\00:16:38.03 had open-heart surgery, congestive heart failure 00:16:38.03\00:16:40.80 and died from a heart attack, which if we want to be honest 00:16:40.80\00:16:44.06 about it was preventable. 00:16:44.06\00:16:45.63 It was a result of his own lifestyle choices that 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.10 accumulated over many years and eventually the lights 00:16:48.10\00:16:51.53 went out and Dad was gone, when he could still be here 00:16:51.53\00:16:54.63 today. 00:16:54.63\00:16:55.63 BS: And that's the tragedy in families, is that so many 00:16:55.63\00:16:57.63 lives are cut short. 00:16:57.63\00:16:59.90 I have patients that come into my office and they'll 00:16:59.90\00:17:02.63 say, You know, I don't want to give up that part of my diet. 00:17:02.63\00:17:06.30 I don't want to quit smoking because it's not the quantity 00:17:06.30\00:17:09.56 I'm looking at, it's the quality. 00:17:09.56\00:17:11.56 And in reality they don't realize that those 00:17:11.56\00:17:13.63 last 15-20 years, what it's going to be like. 00:17:13.63\00:17:16.43 What is it going to be like to their family, to have 00:17:16.43\00:17:18.43 their life cut short and for the family to go on without 00:17:18.43\00:17:20.43 them, when they could have been there for that graduation 00:17:20.43\00:17:22.56 or for that wedding. 00:17:22.56\00:17:23.83 What's it like when they're smothering to death 00:17:23.83\00:17:25.83 with congestive heart failure those last few years. 00:17:25.83\00:17:28.10 Or, when they're trying to smoke a cigarette through 00:17:28.10\00:17:32.26 a trach, because they have such bad lung disease. 00:17:32.26\00:17:36.60 They're trading both the length as well 00:17:36.60\00:17:38.60 as the quality when they choose these habits. 00:17:38.60\00:17:41.56 JB: Alcohol must factor into heart disease somehow. 00:17:41.56\00:17:44.10 How does it play a part? 00:17:44.10\00:17:45.76 BS: It does. 00:17:45.76\00:17:46.76 There's a lot of mixed reviews in the literature 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.20 about having a glass of wine to help your heart. 00:17:49.20\00:17:52.76 JB: Oh yes, we've all heard that. 00:17:52.76\00:17:54.76 BS: It gets a lot of props. 00:17:54.76\00:17:55.76 Interestingly, the studies that have most carefully 00:17:55.76\00:17:59.10 looked at that, it turns out it's probably not the actual 00:17:59.10\00:18:02.23 alcohol content in the wine that gives the benefit. 00:18:02.23\00:18:05.50 There's other compounds that come from grapes, other 00:18:05.50\00:18:08.40 compounds in there that might give the benefit to 00:18:08.40\00:18:10.63 the heart and actually help you raise those good 00:18:10.63\00:18:12.63 cholesterols and help be protected. 00:18:12.63\00:18:14.76 Not necessarily the alcohol content. 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.26 And because alcohol has so many other deleterious 00:18:17.26\00:18:20.36 effects on society, on our livers, on the rest of our 00:18:20.36\00:18:23.73 health, I don't recommend it for my patients. 00:18:23.73\00:18:26.23 JB: Let's talk for a minute about congestive heart 00:18:26.23\00:18:28.23 failure, which my dad had and so many other people's 00:18:28.23\00:18:31.23 dads have. 00:18:31.23\00:18:32.70 What is it, and how does it come about? 00:18:32.70\00:18:34.83 BS: Okay. 00:18:34.83\00:18:35.83 So congestive heart failure is a term that's thrown 00:18:35.83\00:18:38.06 around out there, but it actually occurs 00:18:38.06\00:18:40.06 from a cardiomyopathy. 00:18:40.06\00:18:41.66 Something that damages the heart muscle itself. 00:18:41.66\00:18:44.60 So, the heart is about the size of our fist. 00:18:44.60\00:18:47.00 It squeezes the blood. 00:18:47.00\00:18:49.76 In fact, it pumps almost close to a million gallons 00:18:49.76\00:18:53.66 of blood every single year. 00:18:53.66\00:18:55.46 It does an incredible amount of work. 00:18:55.46\00:18:57.70 That little muscle only has about a half-second to rest 00:18:57.70\00:19:02.43 in between every beat. 00:19:02.43\00:19:04.10 But when you get a cardiomyopathy, 00:19:04.10\00:19:06.10 when the muscle itself is affected, the heart 00:19:06.10\00:19:08.36 begins to stretch out. 00:19:08.36\00:19:09.83 It can't squeeze with such vigorous contractions 00:19:09.83\00:19:13.50 each time. 00:19:13.50\00:19:14.50 That leads to congestive heart failure. 00:19:14.50\00:19:16.76 The symptoms of congestive heart failure are often 00:19:16.76\00:19:19.50 the feeling of smothering. 00:19:19.50\00:19:20.66 I can't catch my breath, I can't lie down flat. 00:19:20.66\00:19:23.86 You start retaining fluid. 00:19:23.86\00:19:25.26 The fluid builds up in your lungs and makes your lungs 00:19:25.26\00:19:27.40 stiff, and that's why you can't breathe. 00:19:27.40\00:19:29.46 Fluid may build up in your legs, and so your legs start 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.90 to swell. 00:19:31.90\00:19:32.90 You might have to let out a couple of inches 00:19:32.90\00:19:34.90 on your belt, because you're retaining fluid. 00:19:34.90\00:19:36.90 Those are all signs of congestive heart failure. 00:19:36.90\00:19:38.90 JB: What can be done about it? 00:19:38.90\00:19:41.86 BS: Congestive heart failure can be prevented. 00:19:41.86\00:19:44.63 The number one cause of congestive heart failure 00:19:44.63\00:19:46.63 in the United States is coronary artery disease, 00:19:46.63\00:19:50.16 which we've talked about. 00:19:50.16\00:19:51.30 JB: The old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth 00:19:51.30\00:19:56.60 a pound of cure, or bigger than a pound of cure. 00:19:56.60\00:19:59.00 BS: Absolutely. 00:19:59.00\00:20:00.00 JB: I imagine that you would say, the best way to treat 00:20:00.00\00:20:02.16 heart disease is to avoid heart disease. 00:20:02.16\00:20:04.66 BS: Absolutely. 00:20:04.66\00:20:05.66 I believe that in my practice close to 90 percent 00:20:05.66\00:20:08.33 of the cases of congestive heart failure, 90 percent of 00:20:08.33\00:20:10.96 the cases of coronary artery disease, are brought on 00:20:10.96\00:20:15.93 by our poor choices. 00:20:15.93\00:20:17.83 There are some people that do absolutely 00:20:17.83\00:20:19.83 everything right. 00:20:19.83\00:20:20.83 We still live in a sinful world where, regardless 00:20:20.83\00:20:23.50 of living well, living healthy, they can still suffer from 00:20:23.50\00:20:26.40 heart disease. 00:20:26.40\00:20:27.53 But that's not the average case. 00:20:27.53\00:20:30.26 JB: Caffeine. 00:20:30.26\00:20:31.26 Let's talk about caffeine in relation to the heart 00:20:31.26\00:20:33.46 of one's health. 00:20:33.46\00:20:35.20 BS: Personally, I don't drink caffeine. 00:20:35.20\00:20:37.26 That puts me in a very small minority of people. 00:20:37.26\00:20:40.83 People feel generally that they're more awake and more 00:20:40.83\00:20:43.40 alert when they drink their cup of coffee every morning 00:20:43.40\00:20:46.00 or have a caffeinated beverage. 00:20:46.00\00:20:47.36 JB: Well, we have these energy drinks that'll give 00:20:47.36\00:20:49.76 you a jolt of energy for 2-3-4-5 hours. 00:20:49.76\00:20:52.10 And it's just a caffeine blast. 00:20:52.10\00:20:54.10 BS: It's a lot of sugar and a lot of caffeine. 00:20:54.10\00:20:56.10 Both of those cause an immediate spike, but then it 00:20:56.10\00:21:00.46 tapers off quickly and you're probably actually 00:21:00.46\00:21:02.73 at a lower level of alertness after the fact, than when 00:21:02.73\00:21:06.06 you first took it. 00:21:06.06\00:21:09.36 Because of that, it causes you to want to do another 00:21:09.36\00:21:12.33 one so you can feel better again. 00:21:12.33\00:21:14.33 And so you're constantly in the cycle of feeling like 00:21:14.33\00:21:16.33 hmm, I'm not feeling quite so alert. 00:21:16.33\00:21:18.33 I need to take another caffeinated beverage or get 00:21:18.33\00:21:20.33 another caffeine boost. 00:21:20.33\00:21:21.33 It turns out that in the studies that I've seen, 00:21:21.33\00:21:25.66 that caffeine does make people feel like they're a little 00:21:25.66\00:21:29.13 bit peppier. 00:21:29.13\00:21:30.06 But after they've been on it chronically, you're simply 00:21:30.06\00:21:33.06 getting back to a normal level of alertness by taking 00:21:33.06\00:21:35.73 the caffeine that you would have had if you'd never been 00:21:35.73\00:21:37.80 on the caffeine in the first place. 00:21:37.80\00:21:39.80 JB: What does it do to your body that's bad 00:21:39.80\00:21:41.80 for your body? 00:21:41.80\00:21:42.80 BS: It's a stimulant. 00:21:42.80\00:21:43.80 It is causing you, and you can feel it if you drink 00:21:43.80\00:21:45.80 a lot of caffeine, you can feel a little bit jittery. 00:21:45.80\00:21:47.80 And because the muscle cells and the heart, all of them 00:21:47.80\00:21:52.23 can become irritable at different times. 00:21:52.23\00:21:54.66 Caffeine stimulates those other cells in the heart, 00:21:54.66\00:21:59.40 besides the natural pace maker, to become irritable. 00:21:59.40\00:22:01.80 And they can take over and trigger faster than 00:22:01.80\00:22:03.80 the natural pace maker. 00:22:03.80\00:22:04.80 When that happens you get a quick little jolt 00:22:04.80\00:22:07.46 in your chest. 00:22:07.46\00:22:08.46 That's what you feel when you feel a palpitation. 00:22:08.46\00:22:10.46 JB: So if someone is looking to look after their heart, 00:22:10.46\00:22:13.76 you'd say caffeine's got to go. 00:22:13.76\00:22:15.76 BS: Well, again, it's all about choices. 00:22:15.76\00:22:18.43 So I tell all my patients who drink a lot of caffeine 00:22:18.43\00:22:20.90 that it would be best to limit it to not more than 00:22:20.90\00:22:22.90 one caffeinated beverage. 00:22:22.90\00:22:24.43 But I also tell them again that I don't drink it at all, 00:22:24.43\00:22:26.63 and I think that's the ideal. 00:22:26.63\00:22:27.90 JB: Brian, thanks. 00:22:27.90\00:22:29.73 I really appreciate your taking the time today. 00:22:29.73\00:22:31.66 emphasis on 00:25:47.50\00:25:49.50 that at It Is Written. 00:25:49.50\00:25:50.50 But that's not to suggest it isn't needed or appreciated. 00:25:50.50\00:25:53.46 Your continued financial support makes it possible 00:25:53.46\00:25:56.03 for It Is Written to continue sharing the Word 00:25:56.03\00:25:58.60 of God with the world. 00:25:58.60\00:26:00.66 Today we've discussed that there is trouble 00:26:04.00\00:26:06.00 in the temple. 00:26:06.00\00:26:07.00 Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:26:07.00\00:26:09.53 We've also spoken not only about the physical heart, 00:26:09.53\00:26:11.73 but the spiritual heart. 00:26:11.73\00:26:12.80 How is it with your temple today? 00:26:12.80\00:26:15.83 If there's trouble in the temple of your life, I don't want you 00:26:15.83\00:26:18.83 to be surprised or discouraged, because the Bible 00:26:18.83\00:26:21.63 has said that we're all sinners and we all have come short 00:26:21.63\00:26:24.26 of the glory of God. 00:26:24.26\00:26:26.00 The key is not simply admitting or discovering 00:26:26.00\00:26:29.53 that there's trouble in the temple, but in coming 00:26:29.53\00:26:31.73 to Jesus so that He can do something about it. 00:26:31.73\00:26:34.60 So as we come to Jesus in prayer right now, I want 00:26:34.60\00:26:36.76 to pray for you and with you that He'll make everything 00:26:36.76\00:26:40.76 right in the temple of your heart. 00:26:40.76\00:26:43.03 Let's pray. 00:26:43.03\00:26:44.03 Our Father in Heaven, we thank You today for 00:26:44.03\00:26:47.03 Your great goodness to us. 00:26:47.03\00:26:49.16 We come to you, Lord, asking that You would make 00:26:49.16\00:26:52.36 our heart right. 00:26:52.36\00:26:53.36 I know there are some people who are sick and ailing 00:26:53.36\00:26:55.56 and they've been diagnosed recently. 00:26:55.56\00:26:58.40 Some people struggling now because of an uncertain 00:26:58.40\00:27:00.46 physical future. 00:27:00.46\00:27:01.46 I pray for them, please come close to them. 00:27:01.46\00:27:05.16 Remind us again that all of us have sinned, we're all 00:27:05.16\00:27:07.73 in this together, and that for all of us there is hope in You. 00:27:07.73\00:27:11.80 We thank You that You are a God who is a God 00:27:11.80\00:27:15.13 of forgiveness. 00:27:15.13\00:27:16.13 We pray with David, create in us a clean heart. 00:27:16.13\00:27:20.63 Take our hearts, make them Yours. 00:27:20.63\00:27:23.03 In Jesus' name we pray, amen. 00:27:23.03\00:27:31.16 [music] 00:27:34.86\00:27:40.86 Thanks for joining me today. 00:27:44.76\00:27:46.76 I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time. 00:27:46.76\00:27:48.76 Until then, remember, it is written: 00:27:48.76\00:27:51.30 "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every 00:27:51.30\00:27:54.66 word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:27:54.66\00:27:57.86
