00:01:47.03\00:01:52.50 In the developed world, if you develop vision problems, 00:01:52.50\00:01:56.93 well, there is usually an eye doctor not too far away 00:01:56.93\00:02:00.50 and with modern eye care techniques being what they are, 00:02:00.50\00:02:03.06 you know that if you develop an everyday vision problem, 00:02:03.06\00:02:06.00 it's going to be easily corrected. 00:02:06.00\00:02:08.53 But what if you live in a part of the world where eye care 00:02:08.53\00:02:11.20 is not readily available. 00:02:11.20\00:02:13.60 If you were then to develop vision problems, you would find 00:02:13.60\00:02:16.33 that not only is an eye care professional hard to find, 00:02:16.33\00:02:19.13 but that the eye care might be impossible to afford. 00:02:19.13\00:02:24.73 The World Health Organization says there are 285 million 00:02:24.73\00:02:28.33 people in the world who are visually impaired. 00:02:28.33\00:02:31.40 Of those, 39 million are blind and of the world's 39 million 00:02:31.40\00:02:37.46 blind people, 15 million of them live in one country, 00:02:37.46\00:02:43.46 India. 00:02:43.46\00:02:47.26 The World Health Organization says that 80 percent of vision 00:02:47.26\00:02:51.23 impairment can be avoided or cured and the Times of India 00:02:51.23\00:02:55.30 has reported that 75 percent of India's 15 million 00:02:55.30\00:03:00.16 cases of blindness could have been avoided. 00:03:00.16\00:03:04.00 Now, let's think about that. 00:03:04.00\00:03:05.63 15 million is a really big number and of India's 15 million 00:03:05.63\00:03:10.10 blind, 11 and a quarter million really ought to be able to see. 00:03:10.10\00:03:14.90 Now, ask yourself: If you were blind unnecessarily, would you 00:03:14.90\00:03:20.23 not want something to be done about it? 00:03:20.23\00:03:22.90 Well, in India, something is being done. 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.83 Here in Punjab state, very close to India's border 00:03:25.83\00:03:30.36 with Pakistan, the very work that Jesus did 00:03:30.36\00:03:33.43 is being carried forward. 00:03:33.43\00:03:35.03 When Jesus was alive on this earth, he opened 00:03:35.03\00:03:38.90 the eyes of the blind and here in Northern India, 00:03:38.90\00:03:42.46 in fact, across India, thanks to the work 00:03:42.46\00:03:45.83 of a small team of dedicated medical professionals, 00:03:45.83\00:03:48.33 well, that same work is being done. 00:03:48.33\00:03:52.06 I have come to India to find out what they 00:03:52.06\00:03:54.46 are doing and to let you know how you can help, 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.26 how you can give sight to the blind. 00:03:57.26\00:03:59.66 The India of today is not the India of yesterday. 00:03:59.66\00:04:04.73 India is now an industrialized nation with a booming 00:04:04.73\00:04:08.13 tech industry. 00:04:08.13\00:04:09.73 More than 1.2 billion people make India the most populous 00:04:09.73\00:04:13.26 democracy in the world. 00:04:13.26\00:04:15.13 Depending on how you measure, the Indian economy is a global 00:04:15.13\00:04:19.93 force to be reckoned with. 00:04:19.93\00:04:22.33 But for all of that, there is still plenty 00:04:22.33\00:04:25.43 of poverty in India. 00:04:25.43\00:04:27.16 It is estimated that India is home to more than a third 00:04:27.16\00:04:30.70 of the world's poorest people and in 2010 the World Bank 00:04:30.70\00:04:36.30 reported that 68.7% of India's population live on less than $2 00:04:36.30\00:04:42.30 a day. 00:04:42.30\00:04:44.56 So for the country's 15 million blind people, life can be 00:04:44.56\00:04:49.23 a real hardship. 00:04:49.23\00:04:52.16 [Woman speaking in the Hind] 00:04:52.16\00:04:59.76 Despite the growing numbers of blind people in India, 00:05:24.20\00:05:27.16 there is a severe shortage of eye care professionals. 00:05:27.16\00:05:30.70 The country only has 20% of the optometrists it needs 00:05:30.70\00:05:34.76 and there is one ophthalmologist for every 100,000 people 00:05:34.76\00:05:38.93 in a rapidly growing population. 00:05:38.93\00:05:41.06 Now compare that to one ophthalmologist for every 13,000 00:05:41.06\00:05:46.10 in the United States. 00:05:46.10\00:05:48.46 So what has happened is that people who suffer 00:05:48.46\00:05:51.66 from vision problems often go untreated and something 00:05:51.66\00:05:55.63 as simple as cataracts become so bad that people end up 00:05:55.63\00:05:59.73 losing their sight. 00:05:59.73\00:06:01.86 Somewhere else and they would have had simple 00:06:01.86\00:06:05.13 cataract surgery. 00:06:05.13\00:06:06.33 Here, frequently, their vision deteriorates and blindness 00:06:06.33\00:06:11.36 is often the result. 00:06:11.36\00:06:13.46 So, how do you address a problem so vast? 00:06:13.46\00:06:17.80 One eye at a time. 00:06:17.80\00:06:19.73 Doctor Jacob Prabhakar is an ophthalmologist who 00:06:22.60\00:06:25.50 has devoted his life to providing eye care 00:06:25.50\00:06:28.63 to some of India's poorest people. 00:06:28.63\00:06:31.06 In the years since he and his team have been performing 00:06:31.06\00:06:33.63 the cataract operations, they have restored the sight 00:06:33.63\00:06:36.53 of thousands of God's children. 00:06:36.53\00:06:40.23 "Year after year, the requirement of operating 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.60 upon patients has been escalating. 00:06:42.60\00:06:45.23 As an ophthalmologist, I could not ignore this fact that 00:06:45.23\00:06:48.96 so many people are suffering blindness, which is treatable, 00:06:48.96\00:06:55.93 and I realize that the only way is to go in search of friends, 00:06:55.93\00:07:01.93 partners, philanthropists, donors who will come 00:07:01.93\00:07:08.26 forward to help this very humanitarian cause." 00:07:08.26\00:07:14.60 So how does all this happen? 00:07:14.60\00:07:17.26 Well that's where you come in. 00:07:17.26\00:07:19.66 It Is Written is partnering with a dedicated team 00:07:19.66\00:07:22.53 of medical professionals to provide life-changing eye 00:07:22.53\00:07:25.86 surgery to thousands of God's precious children. 00:07:25.86\00:07:29.86 And what is incredible is that each cataract surgery 00:07:29.86\00:07:33.46 performed costs only $75 ... 00:07:33.46\00:07:38.13 $75! 00:07:38.13\00:07:39.83 That's less than most people's monthly cell-phone plan. 00:07:39.83\00:07:43.03 $75 doesn't buy much but it does buy Eyes for India. 00:07:43.03\00:07:52.03 Here is how you can give the gift of sight. 00:07:52.03\00:07:57.23 In the United States, call 1.800.253.3000 00:07:57.23\00:08:01.93 and say you want to help Eyes for India. 00:08:01.93\00:08:05.16 That's 1.800.253.3000. 00:08:05.16\00:08:09.63 You can call right now or you can write to Eyes for India at 00:08:09.63\00:08:13.80 It Is Written, Box O, Thousand Oaks, California, 00:08:13.80\00:08:17.60 91359. 00:08:17.60\00:08:19.93 Or, give the gift of sight on-line at itiswritten.com. 00:08:19.93\00:08:24.06 Every $75 you give gives someone the gift of sight, 00:08:24.06\00:08:30.30 soone who desperately wants to see again. 00:08:30.30\00:08:34.06 How would it feel to be given the gift of sight? 00:13:42.03\00:13:44.96 Well, it is possible. 00:13:44.96\00:13:48.60 And it is happening right here in India. 00:13:48.60\00:13:51.63 Dr. Jacob and his team are working tirelessly 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.83 to restore the sight of thousands of people 00:13:54.83\00:13:57.73 every year. 00:13:57.73\00:14:01.50 JB: Dr. Jacob, tell me about this work. 00:14:01.50\00:14:03.60 Tell me the numbers of people you are seeing and how you are 00:14:03.60\00:14:07.06 seeing lives impacted? 00:14:07.06\00:14:08.56 JP: On a given day, our team screens about 1200 to 1500 00:14:08.56\00:14:12.90 patients. 00:14:12.90\00:14:14.33 Before, it was about 250 to 300 patients for cataract surgery. 00:14:14.33\00:14:19.33 As many as 465 surgeries on a given day. 00:14:19.33\00:14:24.10 This simple cataract surgery can make a tremendous impact 00:14:24.10\00:14:27.33 on the quality of life of the individuals 00:14:27.33\00:14:31.36 that we come in contact with. 00:14:31.36\00:14:32.80 It is like they get back their life all over again. 00:14:32.80\00:14:36.40 JB: When Deepo began losing her sight, even life's most basic 00:14:36.40\00:14:41.30 tasks were becoming unmanageable. 00:14:41.30\00:14:44.76 Living in extreme poverty with no family to provide 00:14:44.76\00:14:47.36 help and unable even to cook for herself, without the help 00:14:47.36\00:14:51.66 of Dr. Jacob and his team, Deepo's future was looking 00:14:51.66\00:14:55.10 very grim. 00:14:55.10\00:14:57.06 [Conversation in Hindi] 00:14:57.06\00:15:01.23 JP: Deepo is a widow. 00:15:14.20\00:15:16.40 She has nothing. 00:15:16.40\00:15:17.96 She has no income. 00:15:17.96\00:15:19.00 She lives in a little hut that can't offer her anything. 00:15:19.00\00:15:22.76 Now, all her life has changed. 00:15:22.76\00:15:25.36 She is able to lead a better life than what she 00:15:25.36\00:15:29.03 was suffering from before. 00:15:29.03\00:15:30.73 JB: Christianity is very much a minority religion in India. 00:15:30.73\00:15:40.13 The overwhelming majority of Indians are Hindus and there 00:15:40.13\00:15:43.73 is a considerable amount of Muslims. 00:15:43.73\00:15:46.93 There are some Buddhists, Jains and a lot of Sikhs. 00:15:46.93\00:15:51.86 In Punjab state, the majority of people are Sikhs. 00:15:51.86\00:15:56.10 I am in Amritsar in Punjab state at the site 00:15:56.10\00:16:00.26 of the Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple. 00:16:00.26\00:16:03.60 This is Sikhism's holiest shrine. 00:16:03.60\00:16:06.60 When one comes here, one's head must be covered, which explains 00:16:06.60\00:16:10.10 the head covering. 00:16:10.10\00:16:11.90 So in a place like India, how does one successfully 00:16:11.90\00:16:16.16 demonstrate the love of God? 00:16:16.16\00:16:20.46 Jesus himself wrestled with this very question. 00:16:20.46\00:16:23.23 How to demonstrate to others, to prejudiced people, 00:16:23.23\00:16:27.06 the love of the Creator God. 00:16:27.06\00:16:29.90 Here is what we find in Matthew, 9:27-31, 00:16:29.90\00:16:34.36 "When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed him, 00:16:34.36\00:16:38.30 crying out and saying 'Son of David, have mercy 00:16:38.30\00:16:42.60 on us.' And when he had come into the house, the blind men 00:16:42.60\00:16:46.93 came to him. 00:16:46.93\00:16:48.50 And Jesus said to them, 'Do you believe 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.70 that I am able to do this?' They said to him 'Yes, Lord.' 00:16:50.70\00:16:55.23 Then he touched their eyes saying, 'according to your 00:16:55.23\00:16:58.43 faith, let it be done to you and their eyes were open.' 00:16:58.43\00:17:02.26 And Jesus sternly warned them saying, 00:17:02.26\00:17:05.10 'see that no one knows it.' But when they had departed, 00:17:05.10\00:17:08.40 they spread the news about him in all that country." 00:17:08.40\00:17:12.20 They received the gift of sight and they couldn't keep quiet 00:17:12.20\00:17:16.63 about it. 00:17:16.63\00:17:17.93 They knew that they had been touched by the hand of God, 00:17:17.93\00:17:20.40 by the hand of a God of love and people here are experiencing 00:17:20.40\00:17:25.33 the very same thing. 00:17:25.33\00:17:27.46 We see this again in the Bible, in Mark 10. 00:17:27.46\00:17:30.76 "Now they came to Jericho. 00:17:30.76\00:17:32.13 As he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great 00:17:32.13\00:17:34.80 multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by 00:17:34.80\00:17:39.06 the road begging. 00:17:39.06\00:17:40.36 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, 00:17:40.36\00:17:42.96 he began to cry out and say "Jesus, Son of David, 00:17:42.96\00:17:46.86 have mercy on me." 00:17:46.86\00:17:48.20 Then many warned him to be quiet but he cried out 00:17:48.20\00:17:51.20 all the more. 00:17:51.20\00:17:52.76 "Son of David, have mercy on me." 00:17:52.76\00:17:55.33 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called, 00:17:55.33\00:17:59.06 then they called the blind man saying to him: Be of good cheer, 00:17:59.06\00:18:03.36 rise, he is calling you and throwing aside his garment, 00:18:03.36\00:18:08.06 he rose and came to Jesus. 00:18:08.06\00:18:10.03 So Jesus answered and said to him. 00:18:10.03\00:18:12.50 "What do you want me to do for you? 00:18:12.50\00:18:14.93 The blind man said to him: "Rabboni, that I may 00:18:14.93\00:18:17.63 receive my sight." 00:18:17.63\00:18:19.13 Then Jesus said to him "Go your way. 00:18:19.13\00:18:22.03 Your faith has made you well." 00:18:22.03\00:18:24.86 And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus 00:18:24.86\00:18:29.03 on the road. 00:18:29.03\00:18:33.23 Every $75 you give provides eyesight to an individual who 00:18:35.26\00:18:39.43 desperately wants to see. 00:18:39.43\00:18:42.20 But you do more than give the gift of physical sight. 00:18:42.20\00:18:44.96 What you give is the opportunity for somebody to see and know 00:18:44.96\00:18:50.53 and experience the love of God through the healing touch 00:18:50.53\00:18:54.83 of Jesus. 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.46 $75 - That's all it takes - to give eyesight to one person. 00:18:56.46\00:18:59.40 $750 and you have helped 10 people to see again. 00:18:59.40\00:19:03.73 To give Eyes for India, call right now. 00:19:03.73\00:19:08.26 In the United States, call 1.800.253.3000 00:19:08.26\00:19:14.73 and say you want to help Eyes for India. 00:19:14.73\00:19:17.80 That's 1.800.253.3000. 00:19:17.80\00:19:22.00 You can call right now, or you can write to Eyes for India at 00:19:22.00\00:19:26.20 It Is Written, Box O, Thousand Oaks, California, 00:19:26.20\00:19:30.50 91359. 00:19:30.50\00:19:33.46 Or, give the gift of sight online at itiswritten.com. 00:19:33.46\00:19:40.86 [soft Music] 00:19:43.26\00:19:52.03 I'm so thankful to the people who make this possible. 00:20:00.13\00:20:02.76 Without them, so many would not see again. 00:20:02.76\00:20:09.16 But because of them, they have the gift of sight. 00:20:09.16\00:20:14.40 [Woman speaking Hindi] 00:20:14.40\00:20:19.56 It Is Written is dedicated to sharing the gospel 00:20:31.33\00:20:33.63 around the world. 00:20:33.63\00:20:34.76 To discover more about It Is Written, I invite you 00:20:34.76\00:20:37.10 to visit our website, itiswritten.com 00:20:37.10\00:20:39.90 and browse the dozens of pages that describe what we do 00:20:39.90\00:20:43.10 and how we do it. 00:20:43.10\00:20:44.30 Let's get to know each other better. 00:20:44.30\00:20:46.36 Visit our website itiswritten.com, today. 00:20:46.36\00:20:50.70 [Music] For the 15 million blind people 00:20:51.63\00:20:57.00 currently living in India, life can be an extreme hardship. 00:20:57.00\00:21:02.20 In a country with no welfare system or government support, 00:21:02.20\00:21:05.60 blindness can be an almost insurmountable challenge. 00:21:05.60\00:21:10.26 Thankfully, for many, blindness is a condition that is not only 00:21:10.26\00:21:14.96 treatable but entirely curable. 00:21:14.96\00:21:19.23 [Woman speaking Hindi] 00:21:19.23\00:21:23.16 [Man speaking Hindi] 00:21:34.46\00:21:42.06 Throughout India, more and more people who have lost their sight 00:21:44.83\00:21:47.83 are seeing again. 00:21:47.83\00:21:50.40 And It is Written's sponsored medical team is performing 00:21:50.40\00:21:52.90 cataract surgery on people who are in desperate need 00:21:52.90\00:21:56.13 of medical help and lives are being changed. 00:21:56.13\00:22:01.43 [Man speaking Hindi] 00:22:01.43\00:22:09.26 But with the problem as widespread as this 00:22:30.00\00:22:32.13 and with the extreme poverty in which so many people live, 00:22:32.13\00:22:35.06 how could Dr. Jacob and his team ensure their work reached 00:22:35.06\00:22:38.90 as many people as possible? 00:22:38.90\00:22:41.16 I realize that if only they can be picked up, operated upon, 00:22:41.16\00:22:46.03 and given the gift of sight, they have the world all over 00:22:46.03\00:22:51.40 again in their lives. 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.03 So It Is Written, with the help of generous people like you, 00:22:53.03\00:22:56.86 has provided a bus. 00:22:56.86\00:22:58.46 This allows the medical team to travel to remote locations 00:22:58.46\00:23:02.13 to meet with patients and means people can be brought 00:23:02.13\00:23:05.46 to the site of the surgeries. 00:23:05.46\00:23:07.46 And it also means that 300 or more people a day 00:23:07.46\00:23:13.03 can receive this life-changing cataract surgery and through 00:23:13.03\00:23:16.93 the work of Dr. Jacob and his team, the love of Jesus 00:23:16.93\00:23:20.23 is spreading far and wide. 00:23:20.23\00:23:22.43 We come in contact with many, many blind people, but one man 00:23:22.43\00:23:28.96 we came in contact was a Christian. 00:23:28.96\00:23:33.03 After having received the gift of sight, he went and shared 00:23:33.03\00:23:37.50 with many people the love of Jesus, that Jesus lives 00:23:37.50\00:23:42.16 and loves everybody. 00:23:42.16\00:23:45.66 [Man speaking in Hindi] 00:23:45.66\00:23:51.53 The gift of sight changes lives and changes hearts as people 00:24:05.30\00:24:10.33 see and understand the love of Jesus, the great physician. 00:24:10.33\00:24:14.00 Doctor, the work you are doing is the very work Jesus did. 00:24:14.00\00:24:18.76 Jesus is the one who opened the eyes of the blind. 00:24:18.76\00:24:21.96 Now, you are a Christian physician in a country in which 00:24:21.96\00:24:24.83 less than 3% of the population is Christian. 00:24:24.83\00:24:29.03 So how is what you are doing helping people to see the love 00:24:29.03\00:24:31.43 of God? 00:24:31.43\00:24:33.30 Most of the people whom we come in contact with, they have no 00:24:33.30\00:24:36.76 concept of God. 00:24:36.76\00:24:39.43 And one of the ways of sharing the love of God is to go 00:24:39.43\00:24:42.93 and touch their lives and tell them that God 00:24:42.93\00:24:45.93 helps them in restoring their sight. 00:24:45.93\00:24:49.86 From the people who have received the gift of sight, 00:24:49.86\00:24:52.33 the most important thing that they found is that 00:24:52.33\00:24:54.90 there is a God who loves them. 00:24:54.90\00:24:59.50 Jesus gave the gift of sight and when he did, 00:25:02.36\00:25:05.80 people were convinced that he was the Messiah. 00:25:05.80\00:25:09.00 By giving the precious gift of sight, you can demonstrate 00:25:09.00\00:25:12.30 the love of God in a life-altering way. 00:25:12.30\00:25:16.40 Opening the eyes of the blind is the very work Jesus did 00:25:16.40\00:25:19.50 and you can join in that work, Jesus' work, right now. 00:25:19.50\00:25:23.63 In the United States call 1.800.253.3000 and say 00:25:23.63\00:25:31.30 you want to help Eyes for India. 00:25:31.30\00:25:34.30 That's 1.800.253.3000. 00:25:34.30\00:25:38.40 You can call right now or you can write to Eyes for India 00:25:38.40\00:25:41.40 at It Is Written, Box O, Thousand Oaks, California 91359. 00:25:41.40\00:25:48.80 Or, give the gift of sight on-line at itiswritten.com. 00:25:48.80\00:25:53.00 Every $75 you give gives someone the gift of sight, 00:25:53.00\00:25:59.30 someone who desperately wants to see again. 00:25:59.30\00:26:04.76 I am so thankful to the people who make this possible. 00:26:18.16\00:26:21.60 Without them, so many people would not see again 00:26:21.60\00:26:27.06 but because of them, they have the gift of sight. 00:26:27.06\00:26:32.90 [Woman speaking Hindi] 00:26:32.90\00:26:37.56 [Music in background] Thank you for giving 00:26:43.53\00:26:51.20 the precious gift of sight. 00:26:51.20\00:26:52.83 Thank you for providing eyes for India. 00:26:52.83\00:26:56.43 Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 25:40. 00:26:56.43\00:26:59.76 He said, "Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least 00:26:59.76\00:27:03.76 of these, my brethren, you have done it unto me. 00:27:03.76\00:27:07.80 Let's pray: Our Father in heaven, thank you 00:27:07.80\00:27:10.86 for the precious gift of sight. 00:27:10.86\00:27:12.30 Bless Eyes for India that the eyes of many will 00:27:12.30\00:27:16.63 be open, that eyesight will continue to be restored. 00:27:16.63\00:27:20.36 And I pray that you give the most precious gift of all 00:27:20.36\00:27:23.33 - the opportunity for people to see Jesus. 00:27:23.33\00:27:27.20 I thank you and I pray in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:27:27.20\00:27:31.03 [Music] 00:27:31.03\00:27:35.06 Thanks for joining me today. 00:27:48.66\00:27:50.16 I look forward to seeing you next time. 00:27:50.16\00:27:52.36 Until then, remember. 00:27:52.36\00:27:54.03 It is written, man shall not live by bread alone 00:27:54.03\00:27:57.33 but by every word that proceeds 00:27:57.33\00:28:00.73 from the mouth of God. 00:28:00.73\00:28:03.23
