[Music] It has stood the test of time, 00:00:01.10\00:00:12.33 God's book, the Bible. 00:00:12.33\00:00:17.46 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:17.46\00:00:22.26 It Is Written, sharing hope around the globe. 00:00:22.26\00:00:29.20 This is It Is Written. 00:00:36.93\00:00:37.70 I'm John Bradshaw. 00:00:37.70\00:00:38.70 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:38.70\00:00:39.90 Today on It Is Written, I'm joined by a very special 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.83 guest. 00:00:42.83\00:00:43.83 We've met before when we talked about the covenants, 00:00:43.83\00:00:46.33 the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, but there's much 00:00:46.33\00:00:49.63 to talk about on these subjects and how the Old 00:00:49.63\00:00:52.76 and New Covenants impact our lives today and what they 00:00:52.76\00:00:56.50 really stand for. 00:00:56.50\00:00:57.50 My guest is Dr. Skip McCarty who for over four decades 00:00:57.50\00:01:00.90 has been a pastor, a teacher and an author. 00:01:00.90\00:01:03.83 Skip, thanks very much for joining me today. 00:01:03.83\00:01:06.10 SM Thank you John. 00:01:06.10\00:01:07.10 An honor to be here. 00:01:07.10\00:01:08.10 JB I appreciate this opportunity to speak 00:01:08.10\00:01:10.10 with you about the covenants. 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.10 You have written extensively on this subject. 00:01:11.10\00:01:13.20 You have engaged with theologians and scholars 00:01:13.20\00:01:17.36 from across the Christian spectrum on the subjects 00:01:17.36\00:01:19.36 of the covenants. 00:01:19.36\00:01:20.36 It's a relevant subject, a very pertinent subject today 00:01:20.36\00:01:22.36 because there is a lot of discussion among people who 00:01:22.36\00:01:24.86 say, well I'm a New Covenant Christian. 00:01:24.86\00:01:27.80 I don't want to be an Old Covenant Christian. 00:01:27.80\00:01:30.10 And I'm sure that's right because the covenant God 00:01:30.10\00:01:32.30 gave us today is the New Covenant. 00:01:32.30\00:01:35.46 What was the first Covenant God gave us and before 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.53 you answer that, what's a covenant biblically? 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.53 What's a covenant biblically and what is the first 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.53 one God gave us? 00:01:42.53\00:01:43.53 SM The covenants in the Bible were different kinds. 00:01:43.53\00:01:46.30 There were covenants between nations, there were covenants 00:01:46.30\00:01:48.70 between individuals such as David 00:01:48.70\00:01:50.70 and Jonathan, they had a covenant with each other. 00:01:50.70\00:01:53.06 But the dominant covenants in the Bible are the covenants 00:01:53.06\00:01:56.16 God made with human beings. 00:01:56.16\00:01:57.73 And those covenants are all God initiated. 00:01:57.73\00:01:59.90 They are promises God made to his people. 00:01:59.90\00:02:02.53 JB What is or what was the original covenant God made 00:02:02.53\00:02:05.90 with the human family. 00:02:05.90\00:02:07.13 SM I am going to back up even before the human 00:02:07.13\00:02:10.06 family. 00:02:10.06\00:02:11.06 You can go back in time far enough 00:02:11.06\00:02:13.16 where there was no creation and there was only God. 00:02:13.16\00:02:16.43 And Christianity understands God in terms of Father, Son 00:02:16.43\00:02:20.33 and Holy Spirit. 00:02:20.33\00:02:21.33 That's how we understand God. 00:02:21.33\00:02:23.33 Therefore, it can say God is love for eternity past 00:02:23.33\00:02:25.83 because you have Father, Son and Holy Spirit relating 00:02:25.83\00:02:27.83 to one another. 00:02:27.83\00:02:28.83 Those love bonds, those commitments of loyalty 00:02:28.83\00:02:30.76 to one another, each treating the other as they would want 00:02:30.76\00:02:33.40 to be treated if they were in the other's place. 00:02:33.40\00:02:35.66 That's covenant. 00:02:35.66\00:02:37.00 That's essentially covenant. 00:02:37.00\00:02:38.80 It's that whole sold commitment John Murray, a Presbyterian 00:02:38.80\00:02:42.00 scholar, he called it a whole souled commitment 00:02:42.00\00:02:44.60 to the other. 00:02:44.60\00:02:45.60 Once God began to bring creation into existence, 00:02:45.60\00:02:48.16 the Angels, they were just folded into that covenant. 00:02:48.16\00:02:50.46 This was the same commitment that was made to them when 00:02:50.46\00:02:53.06 he brought Adam and Eve into the existence, that same 00:02:53.06\00:02:56.06 commitment was made to them. 00:02:56.06\00:02:57.06 That kind of a covenant expects the same kind 00:02:57.06\00:02:59.06 of commitment back again. 00:02:59.06\00:03:00.13 JB The covenant represents God's total commitment 00:03:00.13\00:03:04.50 to the person he is making a covenant with. 00:03:04.50\00:03:06.50 SM Absolutely. 00:03:06.50\00:03:07.50 God does expect a whole souled commitment back 00:03:07.50\00:03:09.90 to him. 00:03:09.90\00:03:10.90 There is no question about that. 00:03:10.90\00:03:12.90 No, it's not a whole list of you do this and this 00:03:12.90\00:03:14.90 and this and this and this and then I'll be your God. 00:03:14.90\00:03:16.90 JB And many people see it that way. 00:03:16.90\00:03:18.90 SM Yeah, well, that's a mistake. 00:03:18.90\00:03:20.90 It was not that way with the Angels, it was not that way 00:03:20.90\00:03:22.90 with the Father, Son or Holy Spirit and when Adam and Eve 00:03:22.90\00:03:24.90 were brought into existence, God made that same 00:03:24.90\00:03:26.90 commitment to them. 00:03:26.90\00:03:27.90 Now he did give them a way that they could express 00:03:27.90\00:03:29.90 their trust in him and that was that tree in the garden 00:03:29.90\00:03:32.43 and they showed their distrust of him which 00:03:32.43\00:03:34.43 is essentially what that was. 00:03:34.43\00:03:35.56 It was distrusting him but every covenant from 00:03:35.56\00:03:38.60 that point on has been God reaffirming. 00:03:38.60\00:03:41.80 Once Adam and Eve sinned, the everlasting covenant 00:03:41.80\00:03:44.66 from eternity past was adapted into a covenant 00:03:44.66\00:03:46.90 of grace. 00:03:46.90\00:03:47.90 The covenant of grace is the bridge between Eden lost 00:03:47.90\00:03:52.80 and Eden restored. 00:03:52.80\00:03:53.96 Everything Adam lost, the Covenant of Grace, 00:03:53.96\00:03:56.63 the Everlasting Gospel -- the Book of Revelation calls 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.23 it the Everlasting Gospel -- is that Covenant of Grace. 00:03:59.23\00:04:02.26 Is God's initiative to restore to us everything we've lost. 00:04:02.26\00:04:06.93 So that's the four promises we talked about last time 00:04:06.93\00:04:09.43 I came here, the New Covenant. 00:04:09.43\00:04:10.93 God will write his law in our hearts. 00:04:10.93\00:04:12.93 He'll be our God, we'll be his people. 00:04:12.93\00:04:14.93 Eventually everyone is going to know him and he'll 00:04:14.93\00:04:16.93 forgive us of our sins. 00:04:16.93\00:04:17.93 That comes into that. 00:04:17.93\00:04:18.93 JB Important to discuss that because many people have 00:04:18.93\00:04:20.93 the idea the Old Covenant was the Ten Commandments, 00:04:20.93\00:04:23.30 obey this and live, the New Covenant is believe in Jesus 00:04:23.30\00:04:26.23 and be saved by grace. 00:04:26.23\00:04:27.66 You mentioned something that isn't often spoken 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.30 of in discussions of the covenants. 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.66 So we want to accurately understand what 00:04:33.66\00:04:36.23 the covenants are and you've expressed them always 00:04:36.23\00:04:39.26 as being God's expression of his commitment to his people 00:04:39.26\00:04:42.90 and as we participate in that covenant our expression 00:04:42.90\00:04:45.76 of our commitment back to him. 00:04:45.76\00:04:47.76 But you talked about an everlasting covenant. 00:04:47.76\00:04:51.16 And now, where did that come from and what's that? 00:04:51.16\00:04:53.36 SM The everlasting covenant came from God who 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.36 is everlasting. 00:04:55.36\00:04:56.36 The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.36 That's where it originated in the commitments they have 00:04:58.36\00:05:00.43 made to one another and then enfolded the angelic host 00:05:00.43\00:05:03.26 and the human race into that commitment. 00:05:03.26\00:05:05.26 I am going to turn to one passage and that's Isaiah 24 00:05:05.26\00:05:08.90 and read verse 5 if you would for us. 00:05:08.90\00:05:12.13 JB The earth is also defiled under its in habitants 00:05:12.13\00:05:16.30 because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, 00:05:16.30\00:05:21.76 broken the everlasting covenant. 00:05:21.76\00:05:25.43 SM Isn't that interesting? 00:05:25.43\00:05:27.16 This is the earth. 00:05:27.16\00:05:28.30 This is not just a little group of people here 00:05:28.30\00:05:30.23 or there. 00:05:30.23\00:05:31.23 It's not just a nation. 00:05:31.23\00:05:32.23 It's not just Israel. 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.00 The everlasting covenant involves everyone on 00:05:34.00\00:05:36.63 the earth and the covenants God made with his people, 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.36 for instance, the covenant he made at Sinai, he was just 00:05:39.36\00:05:43.03 grooming them to share with the world the knowledge 00:05:43.03\00:05:46.36 of the everlasting covenant, of God's commitment to everyone 00:05:46.36\00:05:49.00 and that they needed to put their trust in him too 00:05:49.00\00:05:52.33 and have this same experience with God that they were having 00:05:52.33\00:05:54.66 to have restored to them everything that Adam lost 00:05:54.66\00:05:57.23 on their behalf. 00:05:57.23\00:05:58.60 In Hebrews 13, this is the first time that 00:05:58.60\00:06:01.46 the everlasting covenant is associated directly 00:06:01.46\00:06:04.20 with Jesus in Hebrews 13:20. 00:06:04.20\00:06:08.53 Why don't you read that for us if you would? 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.86 JB Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord 00:06:10.86\00:06:14.30 Jesus from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep 00:06:14.30\00:06:18.40 through the blood of the everlasting covenant 00:06:18.40\00:06:21.86 make you complete in every good work to do his will. 00:06:21.86\00:06:23.96 SM Exactly. 00:06:23.96\00:06:24.96 Isaiah said there is an everlasting covenant 00:06:24.96\00:06:26.96 the whole earth has broken. 00:06:26.96\00:06:28.56 In Hebrews it says when Jesus died it was his blood 00:06:28.56\00:06:31.86 of the everlasting covenant. 00:06:31.86\00:06:33.96 He atoned for the sins of the whole world and gave his 00:06:33.96\00:06:37.53 life for them so they could be restored to wholeness 00:06:37.53\00:06:39.73 again. 00:06:39.73\00:06:40.73 JB When do we find talk in the Bible 00:06:40.73\00:06:44.46 of the Old Covenant? 00:06:44.46\00:06:46.00 SM The term Old Covenant first shows up in the New 00:06:46.00\00:06:49.13 Testament. 00:06:49.13\00:06:50.26 It doesn't occur anywhere in the Old Testament. 00:06:50.26\00:06:52.26 The term New Covenant does in Jeremiah, after 00:06:52.26\00:06:54.70 the exile, when they are in Babylon for 70 years 00:06:54.70\00:06:58.13 and Jeremiah 31 God said I'm going to make a New Covenant 00:06:58.13\00:07:02.43 with you. 00:07:02.43\00:07:03.43 JB It's worthwhile reading that. 00:07:03.43\00:07:05.43 Can I look at that? 00:07:05.43\00:07:06.43 It starts in verse 31. 00:07:06.43\00:07:07.43 SM Yes. 00:07:07.43\00:07:08.43 JB Behold the days are coming, says the Lord, 00:07:08.43\00:07:10.43 when I will make a New Covenant with the House of Israel 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.90 and with the House of Judah. 00:07:12.90\00:07:14.53 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers 00:07:14.53\00:07:17.33 in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.96 out of the land of Egypt. 00:07:19.96\00:07:21.50 My covenant, which they broke, though I was a husband 00:07:21.50\00:07:25.30 to them, says the Lord. 00:07:25.30\00:07:26.86 But this is the Covenant that I will make with the House 00:07:26.86\00:07:29.23 of Israel after those days, says the Lord. 00:07:29.23\00:07:32.10 I will put my law in their minds and write it on their 00:07:32.10\00:07:35.53 hearts and I will be their God and they shall be my 00:07:35.53\00:07:39.00 people and verse 34 goes on to say, no more shall every 00:07:39.00\00:07:43.40 man teach his neighbor and every man his brother saying 00:07:43.40\00:07:46.63 know the Lord for they all shall know me, from the least 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.33 of them to the greatest of them says the Lord. 00:07:49.33\00:07:51.33 For I will forgive their iniquity and their sin 00:07:51.33\00:07:54.23 I will remember no more. 00:07:54.23\00:07:55.63 SM Okay this is the new expression of New Covenant. 00:07:55.63\00:07:57.73 JB And it's in the Old Testament. 00:07:57.73\00:07:59.73 SM It's in the Old Testament and it's talking about God 00:07:59.73\00:08:02.43 is renewing his covenant with his people, with Israel, 00:08:02.43\00:08:05.53 that he had made with him at Sinai. 00:08:05.53\00:08:07.53 These same promises occur in the Sinai covenant, 00:08:07.53\00:08:10.06 they incur all through the Old Testament. 00:08:10.06\00:08:12.06 There is New Covenant all the way through 00:08:12.06\00:08:14.06 the Old Testament. 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.06 JB Which means, then, that the Old Covenant isn't 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.06 the Old Testament and the New Covenant, the New Testament, 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.06 which is commonly talked about. 00:08:19.06\00:08:20.26 SM Yes. 00:08:20.26\00:08:21.26 There's an element of truth to that. 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.26 Once Jesus came, there was something so significant 00:08:23.26\00:08:26.06 about that that the Book of Hebrews does talk about 00:08:26.06\00:08:29.40 the whole period before Jesus came as being Old Covenant, 00:08:29.40\00:08:33.06 all the sacrifices and all the temple ritual and so forth, 00:08:33.06\00:08:37.33 that was Old Covenant. 00:08:37.33\00:08:38.76 When Jesus came, the ritual changed. 00:08:38.76\00:08:41.23 We still have ceremonies. 00:08:41.23\00:08:42.33 We still have ceremonial law. 00:08:42.33\00:08:44.33 Our ceremonies are baptism and the Lord's supper. 00:08:44.33\00:08:46.33 There is still ceremonial laws but that changed 00:08:46.33\00:08:48.36 because all of those other ceremonies were looking 00:08:48.36\00:08:50.36 forward to Jesus coming, the ceremonies we now have look 00:08:50.36\00:08:52.76 back on his coming. 00:08:52.76\00:08:53.93 The moral law didn't change, it is still the same moral 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.26 standard, it is still the same standard for sin. 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.56 But the ceremonies change. 00:08:58.56\00:09:00.13 In that sense, you do have a historical Old 00:09:00.13\00:09:02.90 and New Covenant. 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.56 But that's not what the New Testament is focusing on. 00:09:04.56\00:09:06.63 When the New Testament talks about the two covenants 00:09:06.63\00:09:08.63 it's talking about something vastly different. 00:09:08.63\00:09:10.63 JB We are going to have to talk about that in just 00:09:10.63\00:09:12.63 a moment. 00:09:12.63\00:09:13.63 We'll be back with more on the covenants with Dr. Skip 00:09:13.63\00:09:15.63 McCarty, right ahead. 00:09:15.63\00:09:17.63 In Matthew 4:4, the Word of God says, "It is written, 00:09:18.90\00:09:22.53 man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 00:09:22.53\00:09:26.46 proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:09:26.46\00:09:28.46 Every Word is a one-minute readers that 00:09:59.33\00:10:02.96 the day of the return of Jesus is going to come 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.63 for many people like a thief in the night. 00:10:05.63\00:10:08.96 They're not going to be ready, even though they have the same 00:10:08.96\00:10:10.43 opportunities as everybody else to be ready. 00:10:10.43\00:10:12.96 And with the thought of Jesus' return in the center 00:10:12.96\00:10:15.20 of the picture, Paul adds in verse 6. 00:10:15.20\00:10:17.60 "Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us 00:10:17.60\00:10:20.66 watch and be sober." 00:10:20.66\00:10:23.13 There's nothing more important that being ready 00:10:23.13\00:10:25.13 to meet Jesus when He comes back, and people ought 00:10:25.13\00:10:27.30 to "watch" for that day: alert to the signs of the times 00:10:27.30\00:10:30.46 and living in a way that suggests you are serious 00:10:30.46\00:10:32.96 about meeting Jesus. 00:10:32.96\00:10:34.80 If ever there was a time to be living with eternity 00:10:34.80\00:10:37.73 in mind, this is definitely it. 00:10:37.73\00:10:40.86 Why? 00:10:40.86\00:10:41.86 Because Jesus is coming back soon. 00:10:41.86\00:10:45.26 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:10:45.26\00:10:47.46 Let's live today by Every Word. 00:10:47.46\00:10:50.46 This is It Is Written and I'm John Bradshaw 00:10:51.83\00:10:53.96 and my guest today is Dr. Skip McCarty and we are talking 00:10:53.96\00:10:56.53 about the covenants, the Old Covenant and the New 00:10:56.53\00:11:00.06 Covenant and Skip, must a moment ago you mentioned 00:11:00.06\00:11:04.10 something that is going to take our conversation a little bit 00:11:04.10\00:11:07.46 deeper. 00:11:07.46\00:11:08.46 There is an historical element to the covenants 00:11:08.46\00:11:12.36 and an experiential element to the covenants. 00:11:12.36\00:11:16.33 SM Correct. 00:11:16.33\00:11:17.33 JB There was an Old Covenant and there is a New Covenant. 00:11:17.33\00:11:19.90 Jesus stood between the two covenants historically 00:11:19.90\00:11:24.53 but what do you mean when you say there is an experiential 00:11:24.53\00:11:26.73 component? 00:11:26.73\00:11:27.73 SM In the writings of Paul, when he is talking about 00:11:27.73\00:11:29.83 the covenants, he is talking about something that God 00:11:29.83\00:11:32.16 himself hinted at when he gave the New Covenant 00:11:32.16\00:11:34.60 in the book of Hebrews. 00:11:34.60\00:11:35.60 When he gave the New Covenant in Hebrews 8, he said it's not 00:11:35.60\00:11:38.33 going to be like the covenant I made with those 00:11:38.33\00:11:40.33 I brought out of Egypt because they weren't 00:11:40.33\00:11:42.33 faithful to my covenant. 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.23 That was the difference. 00:11:44.23\00:11:45.23 It was a matter of faithfulness. 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.23 So God himself said what's going to be different about 00:11:47.23\00:11:49.23 the New Covenant is I'm expecting a different 00:11:49.23\00:11:51.23 response than I got at At Sinai, people said we'll 00:11:51.23\00:11:53.70 do it all, we'll do everything you said but they didn't. 00:11:53.70\00:11:56.23 They immediately made a golden calf. 00:11:56.23\00:11:58.23 JB Sure. 00:11:58.23\00:11:59.23 SM God says I want a different response from this generation 00:11:59.23\00:12:01.30 and so what he's talking about here is how people respond 00:12:01.30\00:12:05.36 to the gospel message. 00:12:05.36\00:12:06.86 Jesus said that which is born of the flesh is flesh, 00:12:06.86\00:12:08.86 that which is born of the spirit is spirit. 00:12:08.86\00:12:10.86 You must be born again and so if we stay in the flesh, 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.63 and that can be a rebellious response to God or a religious 00:12:13.63\00:12:16.96 response to God. 00:12:16.96\00:12:18.16 Religious response is where we just do what we think 00:12:18.16\00:12:21.56 is right and think that's going to put God in our debt. 00:12:21.56\00:12:24.00 We'll merit eternal life. 00:12:24.00\00:12:25.80 That's all Old Covenant. 00:12:25.80\00:12:26.93 And the other side, being born of the Spirit, being 00:12:26.93\00:12:30.03 born according to the Spirit is New Covenant. 00:12:30.03\00:12:32.80 JB So what you're saying, there's a historical component 00:12:32.80\00:12:35.93 to the covenants, Jesus stood between the two covenants 00:12:35.93\00:12:39.26 historically, but there is an experiential 00:12:39.26\00:12:41.93 component where somebody living in this very modern 00:12:41.93\00:12:44.46 age can have a very Old Covenant experience. 00:12:44.46\00:12:47.43 SM That's what he's warning against. 00:12:47.43\00:12:49.43 JB Tell me how a person in practical terms today 00:12:49.43\00:12:51.43 can have an Old Covenant experience. 00:12:51.43\00:12:53.43 SM Okay. 00:12:53.43\00:12:54.43 JB You might be living under the Old Covenant even 00:12:54.43\00:12:56.43 if you attend a church that says New Covenant church right 00:12:56.43\00:12:59.43 on the sign, if. 00:12:59.43\00:13:00.50 SM That's true. 00:13:00.50\00:13:01.50 I've knocked on many doors in my life just talking 00:13:01.50\00:13:04.53 to people about the gospel and somebody says well I don't 00:13:04.53\00:13:07.76 really need what you're offering because I think 00:13:07.76\00:13:09.96 I live a good life. 00:13:09.96\00:13:10.96 I live a good enough life. 00:13:10.96\00:13:11.96 If there's an after life, I think I'll be okay. 00:13:11.96\00:13:13.96 It's the law of Karma. 00:13:13.96\00:13:16.23 The law of Karma says I'm going to get coming back 00:13:16.23\00:13:19.20 to me. 00:13:19.20\00:13:20.20 If I don't get it all in this life I'm gonna get 00:13:20.20\00:13:22.20 it in the next life either good or bad. 00:13:22.20\00:13:24.20 The Gospel isn't Karma. 00:13:24.20\00:13:25.93 The Gospel is total faith in Jesus Christ. 00:13:25.93\00:13:28.96 His blood of the everlasting covenant is what washes away 00:13:28.96\00:13:32.10 my sins. 00:13:32.10\00:13:33.10 His promise to write his law in my heart and mind is what 00:13:33.10\00:13:36.60 empowers me to live a godly life and that's a process. 00:13:36.60\00:13:40.60 If I think going to church is going to help get 00:13:40.60\00:13:43.76 me salvation, just going to church - that's not going to 00:13:43.76\00:13:46.96 do it. 00:13:46.96\00:13:47.96 I have to have total dependence on the grace 00:13:47.96\00:13:49.96 of Jesus Christ's sacrifice for me and his promise to change 00:13:49.96\00:13:53.40 my life. 00:13:53.40\00:13:54.60 That's new covenant. 00:13:54.60\00:13:55.60 JB So secular people, without realizing it, can 00:13:55.60\00:13:57.73 have an Old Covenant attitude. 00:13:57.73\00:13:59.73 SM Exactly. 00:13:59.73\00:14:00.80 JB and modern New Testament church going Christians 00:14:00.80\00:14:03.40 can be under the Old Covenant. 00:14:03.40\00:14:04.53 SM John, we are born Old Covenant. 00:14:04.53\00:14:06.76 Every human being is born in Old Covenant. 00:14:06.76\00:14:09.33 .We have to be converted to become New Covenant people. 00:14:09.33\00:14:11.76 That's what Paul has in mind here. 00:14:11.76\00:14:13.93 Those who are born of the flesh are Old Covenant. 00:14:13.93\00:14:16.63 That's what he calls Old Covenant. 00:14:16.63\00:14:18.76 Those who are born of the Spirit are New Covenant. 00:14:18.76\00:14:21.43 So He is saying if you are Old Covenant, you will not 00:14:21.43\00:14:23.66 inherit eternal life. 00:14:23.66\00:14:25.26 So John, if the Old Covenant is the Covenant God made 00:14:25.26\00:14:28.40 with the people at Sinai, that would be saying 00:14:28.40\00:14:31.46 that anyone who is faithful to that covenant, as God asked 00:14:31.46\00:14:33.90 them to me, cannot have everlasting life. 00:14:33.90\00:14:36.93 That's why we absolutely, positively know 00:14:36.93\00:14:39.06 that it's not talking about any covenant he had 00:14:39.06\00:14:41.60 made previously. 00:14:41.60\00:14:42.60 It's talking about their response, an illegitimate 00:14:42.60\00:14:44.83 response, a legalistic or a rebellious response 00:14:44.83\00:14:47.13 to the gospel. 00:14:47.13\00:14:48.36 That's totally what the Old Covenant is in Paul's 00:14:48.36\00:14:50.43 thinking. 00:14:50.43\00:14:51.43 JB That's serious, isn't it? 00:14:51.43\00:14:52.43 Because there are Christians today who, based on their 00:14:52.43\00:14:55.83 attitude towards the gospel, might be Old Covenant 00:14:55.83\00:14:59.93 Christians because of the experience they are having 00:14:59.93\00:15:03.23 rather than New Covenant Christians because they are 00:15:03.23\00:15:05.46 missing something vital with Jesus Christ. 00:15:05.46\00:15:07.46 SM That's true. 00:15:07.46\00:15:08.46 And it has nothing to do with Oh, I believe in the Ten 00:15:08.46\00:15:10.46 Commandments, therefore you must be Old Covenant. 00:15:10.46\00:15:12.46 It has nothing to do with that. 00:15:12.46\00:15:14.46 It's how we are responding to God in faith. 00:15:14.46\00:15:16.46 Or if I'm responding to God and I say, Oh, I put faith 00:15:16.46\00:15:18.46 in God but I don't want anything to do with 00:15:18.46\00:15:20.46 the transformation of my life. 00:15:20.46\00:15:21.46 The New Covenant is I'm going to write my law 00:15:21.46\00:15:23.46 in your hearts. 00:15:23.46\00:15:24.46 I am going to forgive you but I am going to write my 00:15:24.46\00:15:26.46 law in your hearts as well. 00:15:26.46\00:15:27.46 It's a total submission to God, it's a total submission 00:15:27.46\00:15:29.86 to God to do everything he wants to do for us 00:15:29.86\00:15:31.80 in this life. 00:15:31.80\00:15:32.80 JB and entering into the transformation he wants to 00:15:32.80\00:15:34.80 bring into our lives. 00:15:34.80\00:15:35.80 SM Exactly. 00:15:35.80\00:15:36.80 JB Let's pick up on more and that in just a minute. 00:15:36.80\00:15:39.06 A great discussion with Dr. Skip McCarty. 00:15:39.06\00:15:39.93 I'll look forward to talking with you more about this Written. 00:16:38.53\00:16:40.76 My guest is Skip McCarty and our discussion is centering 00:16:40.76\00:16:45.06 on the covenants, the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. 00:16:45.06\00:16:48.56 And Skip, what we find in the Bible is that God wants 00:16:48.56\00:16:51.13 everybody to have a New Covenant experience. 00:16:51.13\00:16:53.76 SM Amen. 00:16:53.76\00:16:54.76 Old Testament, New Testament, it doesn't matter when they 00:16:54.76\00:16:56.76 lived, he wants them to have a New Covenant 00:16:56.76\00:16:58.76 experience. 00:16:58.76\00:16:59.76 It's the only way for salvation. 00:16:59.76\00:17:01.83 JB So somebody in the Old Testament living, it was God's 00:17:01.83\00:17:03.83 will that that person have a New Covenant 00:17:03.83\00:17:05.83 experience. 00:17:05.83\00:17:06.83 SM All those people in Hebrews 11. 00:17:06.83\00:17:08.83 They didn't have the Old Covenant experience 00:17:08.83\00:17:10.83 that Paul is talking about in Galatians 4. 00:17:10.83\00:17:12.83 They had a New Covenant experience. 00:17:12.83\00:17:14.83 JB Tell me how somebody living in the Old Covenant 00:17:14.83\00:17:16.83 times could have an Old Covenant experience 00:17:16.83\00:17:18.83 as opposed to a New Covenant experience. 00:17:18.83\00:17:20.83 SM Oh easy. 00:17:20.83\00:17:21.83 In Isaiah 1, God is saying you perform the sacrifices, 00:17:21.83\00:17:23.83 you go to the festivals but you are oppressing people. 00:17:23.83\00:17:25.96 He says I hate your sacrifices. 00:17:25.96\00:17:28.63 You need to live a godly life. 00:17:28.63\00:17:30.66 In other words, they weren't fully embracing the promise 00:17:30.66\00:17:33.90 God had given them to transform their hearts. 00:17:33.90\00:17:36.00 It's very clear God wanted love first. 00:17:36.00\00:17:39.30 Love me and keep my commandments. 00:17:39.30\00:17:41.70 And Love for God and love for others was always 00:17:41.70\00:17:44.76 at the top of the list of His commandments. 00:17:44.76\00:17:46.90 It always was. 00:17:46.90\00:17:47.90 And so God says you're not loving people, then the ritual 00:17:47.90\00:17:50.60 means nothing to me. 00:17:50.60\00:17:51.60 So people who say I'll treat people, I'll cheat them 00:17:51.60\00:17:54.23 in business, I'll get as rich as I can and oppress 00:17:54.23\00:17:56.40 the poor but yet I'll do the sacrifices and I'll perform 00:17:56.40\00:18:00.66 the rituals. 00:18:00.66\00:18:01.66 God says no, it's not what it's about. 00:18:01.66\00:18:03.66 That is Old Covenant. 00:18:03.66\00:18:04.66 JB New Covenant, it seems very clear, involves 00:18:04.66\00:18:07.36 a transformation in the life. 00:18:07.36\00:18:09.23 SM Absolutely. 00:18:09.23\00:18:10.23 JB God said if you love me, I'll write my law 00:18:10.23\00:18:13.53 in your hearts. 00:18:13.53\00:18:14.80 SM Exactly. 00:18:14.80\00:18:15.80 JB Now you would say that that law that he 00:18:15.80\00:18:17.80 is talking about is the Ten Commandments. 00:18:17.80\00:18:19.80 Can we be certain about that? 00:18:19.80\00:18:21.80 SM It's at least the Ten Commandments. 00:18:21.80\00:18:23.80 It's at least the Ten Commandments. 00:18:23.80\00:18:25.80 That's the law that God is writing on our hearts. 00:18:25.80\00:18:27.80 JB And saying that a person is going to keep the Ten 00:18:27.80\00:18:29.80 Commandments is not legalism. 00:18:29.80\00:18:30.80 SM It can be legalism if that is all they think about, 00:18:30.80\00:18:33.80 is the Ten Commandments and obeying those in order 00:18:33.80\00:18:35.80 to get to heaven. 00:18:35.80\00:18:36.80 That can be legalism. 00:18:36.80\00:18:37.80 But a person who sincerely seeks God, who trusts God 00:18:37.80\00:18:40.36 to do the work in them they can't do for themselves, 00:18:40.36\00:18:42.53 to make them godly people, loving people, and obedient 00:18:42.53\00:18:46.06 to His commandments, of course. 00:18:46.06\00:18:48.06 But the commandments become promises. 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.06 Once a person becomes a believer and converted, 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.86 they are ten promises. 00:18:52.86\00:18:53.90 JB And that's the New Covenant experience. 00:18:53.90\00:18:56.20 SM Yes it is. 00:18:56.20\00:18:57.20 JB You know, there's another passage that I have been 00:18:57.20\00:18:59.96 asked about frequently that deals with this. 00:18:59.96\00:19:02.90 It's found in 2 Corinthians 3. 00:19:02.90\00:19:05.53 Would you mind looking at that with me? 00:19:05.53\00:19:07.53 SM Yes. 00:19:07.53\00:19:08.53 JB What do we say about this passage that Paul 00:19:08.53\00:19:10.53 was talking about here. 00:19:10.53\00:19:11.53 In fact, you know, it has a little heading right here 00:19:11.53\00:19:13.90 in this Bible, glory of the New Covenant. 00:19:13.90\00:19:16.43 SM In 2 Corinthians 3 it's very much like his letter 00:19:16.43\00:19:19.90 to the Galations in his discussion 00:19:19.90\00:19:21.90 of the two covenants there. 00:19:21.90\00:19:22.90 So we bring that mindset here and we find out exactly 00:19:22.90\00:19:26.10 the same thing going on here because what he does here 00:19:26.10\00:19:28.20 is he contrasts New Covenant and another covenant here 00:19:28.20\00:19:31.36 that he has in mind. 00:19:31.36\00:19:33.23 He says we're ministers of the New Covenant, 00:19:33.23\00:19:36.26 not of the letter. 00:19:36.26\00:19:37.80 He calls the other the letter that many people 00:19:37.80\00:19:41.00 refer to the Sinai Covenant. 00:19:41.00\00:19:43.20 You have parallel columns again where he has Old 00:19:43.20\00:19:46.23 Covenant and he says the Old Covenant is the letter 00:19:46.23\00:19:48.83 and the New Covenant is the Spirit. 00:19:48.83\00:19:50.83 The Old Covenant is written on stone and the New Covenant 00:19:50.83\00:19:53.06 is written on the heart. 00:19:53.06\00:19:54.06 The Old Covenant is condemnation and death. 00:19:54.06\00:19:57.06 The New Covenant is righteousness and life 00:19:57.06\00:19:59.36 and when you go down those columns, you find out if you 00:19:59.36\00:20:02.76 just have the items he puts in the Old Covenant, 00:20:02.76\00:20:05.16 you have an unsaved person. 00:20:05.16\00:20:06.23 It's talking about an unconverted person. 00:20:06.23\00:20:08.56 So what you have is the Old Covenant again is an unbelieving 00:20:08.56\00:20:12.26 response to the gospel. 00:20:12.26\00:20:14.16 A rejection of it or a legalistic response to it 00:20:14.16\00:20:16.90 and the New Covenant being a faith-embrace 00:20:16.90\00:20:19.26 of the gospel, allowing God to do everything in us 00:20:19.26\00:20:21.56 he wants to do and he is going to change us from one 00:20:21.56\00:20:23.56 degree of glory to the other by the Spirit who does 00:20:23.56\00:20:25.76 this work in us. 00:20:25.76\00:20:26.76 That's New Covenant. 00:20:26.76\00:20:27.76 No matter when a person lived, they had to have 00:20:27.76\00:20:29.76 that experience and that is New Covenant. 00:20:29.76\00:20:31.70 JB So the covenants that God made with his people back 00:20:31.70\00:20:33.96 in Old Testament times were gospel-revealing covenants. 00:20:33.96\00:20:37.80 SM Exactly. 00:20:37.80\00:20:38.80 Each one in capsuled the gospel to be shared 00:20:38.80\00:20:41.00 with the people of the world around them. 00:20:41.00\00:20:43.50 It was the same gospel throughout. 00:20:43.50\00:20:45.50 Paul said in Galations 1 there's one gospel. 00:20:45.50\00:20:47.50 There is no other gospel. 00:20:47.50\00:20:48.50 If anybody preaches a different gospel, that would 00:20:48.50\00:20:50.50 be Adam, that would be Moses, that would be anybody 00:20:50.50\00:20:53.00 in the Old Testament who preached a different gospel, 00:20:53.00\00:20:56.00 Paul said let him be accursed. 00:20:56.00\00:20:57.00 JB God wants people today to have New Covenant experience 00:20:57.00\00:21:01.26 with Him. 00:21:01.26\00:21:02.26 SM Exactly. 00:21:02.26\00:21:03.26 JB Explain to somebody right now how they can have a New 00:21:03.26\00:21:08.63 Covenant experience with God, what that is going 00:21:08.63\00:21:11.23 to look like, what it will do for them. 00:21:11.23\00:21:13.53 SM Okay. 00:21:13.53\00:21:14.53 Every human being, John, no matter who they are, 00:21:14.53\00:21:16.53 is going to have times in their life when they are under 00:21:16.53\00:21:19.63 conviction by God. 00:21:19.63\00:21:21.43 You can't get away from that, no matter where you 00:21:21.43\00:21:23.56 are, whether you have even heard of Jesus or not. 00:21:23.56\00:21:25.56 You are going to come under conviction by the Spirit of God 00:21:25.56\00:21:28.26 that there is something wrong, you need something more. 00:21:28.26\00:21:30.90 Now people can try to make a transformation in their life 00:21:30.90\00:21:33.76 but that's futile too make that ultimate change that God 00:21:33.76\00:21:36.70 is asking us to make, and so they come to 00:21:36.70\00:21:39.13 the place where they say God, help me! 00:21:39.13\00:21:41.76 And God comes into the picture. 00:21:41.76\00:21:43.76 There's conversion. 00:21:43.76\00:21:44.76 The Spirit of God brings a new life into them 00:21:44.76\00:21:46.86 and the Bible calls that the new birth. 00:21:46.86\00:21:48.86 That's the New Covenant experience and then 00:21:48.86\00:21:51.40 it's a matter of continuing to trust God, trust his 00:21:51.40\00:21:53.40 promises, trust those promises. 00:21:53.40\00:21:55.33 God says I'm going to write my law in your mind. 00:21:55.33\00:21:57.33 I'm going to forgive you. 00:21:57.33\00:21:58.33 Don't keep bringing up the past. 00:21:58.33\00:22:00.40 Don't keep worrying about the past. 00:22:00.40\00:22:02.40 I am going to forgive you for that. 00:22:02.40\00:22:04.40 Let's go on from here. 00:22:04.40\00:22:05.40 I'm going to do a new thing in your life and I am going 00:22:05.40\00:22:07.40 to be your God, and you are going to be my child even 00:22:07.40\00:22:09.40 when things go rough for you when you fall, I'm still 00:22:09.40\00:22:11.40 your God, you're still my child. 00:22:11.40\00:22:13.40 We are going to get through this together. 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.40 The New Covenant is God promising people He is going 00:22:15.40\00:22:17.40 to do for them what they can't do and He is going 00:22:17.40\00:22:19.40 to save them. 00:22:19.40\00:22:20.40 It's his promise. 00:22:20.40\00:22:21.40 I am guaranteeing you, I will save you. 00:22:21.40\00:22:23.40 Just don't run away from me. 00:22:23.40\00:22:24.40 Hang on to me. 00:22:24.40\00:22:25.40 Hang on to me. 00:22:25.40\00:22:26.40 I am going to save you. 00:22:26.40\00:22:27.40 I am going to make your life more meaningful here than 00:22:27.40\00:22:29.40 you have ever dreamed here on this earth. 00:22:29.40\00:22:31.33 JB Allowing God to be in our life that which he wants 00:22:31.33\00:22:33.33 to be. 00:22:33.33\00:22:34.33 SM Yes. 00:22:34.33\00:22:35.83 JB To make us what he wants us to be. 00:22:35.83\00:22:36.93 SM Yes. 00:22:36.93\00:22:37.53 JB The discussion when we get into well New Covenant 00:22:37.53\00:22:38.86 you don't keep the commandments, Old Covenant you do keep 00:22:38.86\00:22:40.80 the commandments. 00:22:40.80\00:22:41.76 It's really a smoke screen, isn't it? 00:22:41.76\00:22:43.40 SM It's not in the New Testament. 00:22:43.40\00:22:44.53 It doesn't exist there. 00:22:44.53\00:22:45.36 That kind of thinking does not exist there. 00:22:45.36\00:22:46.96 Paul is not talking, when he is talking about the Old 00:22:46.96\00:22:49.13 Covenant, he is not talking about the covenant God made 00:22:49.13\00:22:51.23 with his people at Sinai. 00:22:51.23\00:22:52.80 Particularly the moral laws God gave his people 00:22:52.80\00:22:54.90 at Sinai. 00:22:54.90\00:22:55.40 Paul himself said if it wasn't for the 10th 00:22:55.40\00:22:56.80 Commandment, Thou shall not covet, I would not even know 00:22:56.80\00:22:58.80 I was a sinner. 00:22:58.80\00:23:00.16 He thought he was living a perfect life. 00:23:00.16\00:23:01.46 He says that in Philippians 3. 00:23:01.46\00:23:02.56 Before the law, I was faultless. 00:23:02.56\00:23:05.16 There is no argumentation in the New Testament against 00:23:05.16\00:23:07.20 the commandments of God, against the Ten Commandments. 00:23:07.20\00:23:09.60 Absolutely not. 00:23:09.60\00:23:10.60 It's only against this rebellious attitude 00:23:10.60\00:23:12.76 toward them. 00:23:12.76\00:23:14.10 Once you understand that's what the Old Covenant 00:23:14.10\00:23:15.76 is about, it's about a faulty response to God, an unbelieving 00:23:15.76\00:23:19.63 response or a legalistic response to God, 00:23:19.63\00:23:20.83 New Covenant is a faith-response to God, totally trusting 00:23:20.83\00:23:23.06 his grace. 00:23:23.06\00:23:24.23 It's our response to the law, it's a perversion of the law 00:23:24.23\00:23:27.36 that he has in mind. 00:23:27.36\00:23:28.33 If he is talking negatively about it, that's what he 00:23:28.33\00:23:29.96 is talking about. 00:23:29.96\00:23:30.83 He's not talking about a faith response to God's law, 00:23:30.83\00:23:33.16 see it as now the promise of God. 00:23:33.16\00:23:35.73 JB We've covered some ground today. 00:23:35.73\00:23:37.16 I'm thankful to you for taking the time and I want 00:23:37.16\00:23:39.13 to encourage you, friend, to know that God wants you 00:23:39.13\00:23:43.56 to have a New Covenant experience. 00:23:43.56\00:23:46.96 When you will come to God by faith and say here I am, 00:23:46.96\00:23:50.50 take me and do whatever it is you want to do in my 00:23:50.50\00:23:53.76 life, you are entering into a New Covenant experience 00:23:53.76\00:23:56.33 with God. 00:23:56.33\00:23:57.70 You see, when God enters your life and writes his law 00:23:57.70\00:24:00.16 in your heart, when Jesus begins to live his life 00:24:00.16\00:24:02.43 in you, what once might have seemed impossible to you 00:24:02.43\00:24:05.53 becomes possible. 00:24:05.53\00:24:06.93 You love the things you used to hate and maybe hate some 00:24:06.93\00:24:09.73 things you used to love and you find your life trending 00:24:09.73\00:24:12.63 in the very direction that God wants it to go. 00:24:12.63\00:24:15.33 Friend, there is only one thing, and that is to enter into 00:24:15.33\00:24:17.23 a New Covenant experience with Jesus. 00:24:17.23\00:24:19.53 Let him write his law in your heart. 00:24:19.53\00:24:22.83 Respond to him by saying as Jesus said to his Father, 00:24:22.83\00:24:25.66 not my will, but your will be done. 00:24:25.66\00:24:29.63 When you say to Jesus, let me have a New Covenant 00:24:29.63\00:24:32.06 experience with you, your life is going to bloom, 00:24:32.06\00:24:35.26 your joy will be full, you'll be walking with Jesus 00:24:35.26\00:24:38.53 the way he wants you to walk and you can look forward 00:24:38.53\00:24:42.26 with great certainty to the wonderful day 00:24:42.26\00:24:44.26 when Jesus comes to take you home. 00:24:44.26\00:24:47.86 [music] 00:24:47.86\00:24:50.86 The world in which we live is full of the phony and fake, 00:24:59.10\00:25:02.26 imitation of this and that, Photoshop pictures, 00:25:02.26\00:25:05.06 Internet hoaxes and we see people we want to 00:25:05.06\00:25:08.00 admire let us down with lies and deceit and broken that you can have 00:26:45.60\00:26:48.20 that experience with Jesus that he wants you to have, 00:26:48.20\00:26:50.76 an experience that is vital and vibrant, that even 00:26:50.76\00:26:53.33 when there are times of challenges, God can get you 00:26:53.33\00:26:55.43 through, an experience where the Lord's will is done 00:26:55.43\00:26:58.46 and you are made a new creature in Christ. 00:26:58.46\00:27:00.60 Let's pray for that now. 00:27:00.60\00:27:02.80 Father in heaven, thank you for giving us a New Covenant 00:27:02.80\00:27:05.33 experience, where we can open up our hearts to you 00:27:05.33\00:27:08.26 and allow you to be the God in our life, and allow Jesus 00:27:08.26\00:27:12.33 to work in us both to will and to do 00:27:12.33\00:27:14.33 for his good pleasure. 00:27:14.33\00:27:16.40 May we not choose to be Old Covenant Christians, 00:27:16.40\00:27:18.90 trusting our own works, doing our own thing 00:27:18.90\00:27:22.50 in order to secure salvation. 00:27:22.50\00:27:24.70 But may we trust fully in you. 00:27:24.70\00:27:26.70 Give us the grace today to lean on Jesus and expect 00:27:26.70\00:27:29.83 His will to be done. 00:27:29.83\00:27:31.30
