It's a large fruit covered in dull 00:00:54.36\00:00:57.76 spikes - not the prettiest thing you'll ever see. 00:00:57.76\00:01:00.90 I read where someone described the durian as 00:01:00.90\00:01:03.00 looking like something that would dangle from a 00:01:03.00\00:01:05.23 gladiator's chain. 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.40 The durian is probably best known for its smell - it 00:01:07.40\00:01:12.36 smells... 00:01:12.36\00:01:13.36 how would you say? 00:01:13.36\00:01:15.60 Okay - there's no delicate way to say it. 00:01:15.60\00:01:17.60 The durian stinks! 00:01:17.60\00:01:19.90 But if you can get past that - and maybe for good 00:01:47.73\00:01:52.43 reason. 00:01:52.43\00:01:53.46 Some say eating this fish is the culinary equivalent of 00:01:53.46\00:01:56.53 playing Russian roulette. 00:01:56.53\00:01:58.70 Diners pay good money to eat this fish, which, if prepared 00:01:58.70\00:02:02.43 incorrectly, could kill them owing to parts of the fish 00:02:02.43\00:02:06.43 being toxic. 00:02:06.43\00:02:08.16 Fugu served as tempura of sashimi, or baked or added to 00:02:08.16\00:02:12.50 a glass of hot sake, is considered a treat by many. 00:02:12.50\00:02:17.30 Now in Tokyo food authorities are preparing to introduce a 00:02:17.30\00:02:20.46 change to regulations, allowing unlicensed 00:02:20.46\00:02:23.70 restaurants to serve fugu - the recommended daily calorie intake for men is 00:05:12.20\00:05:16.80 around 2500 and for women it's around 2000. 00:05:16.80\00:05:21.10 8000 is a LOT of calories! 00:05:21.10\00:05:24.70 Not surprising this thing has 8000 calories seeing as it 00:05:24.70\00:05:28.20 comes, with among other things, 20 slices of bacon!) 00:05:28.20\00:05:33.06 There are reduced versions of that burger - such as the 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.26 Single Bypass burger - that contain far fewer calories. 00:05:35.26\00:05:39.03 But still a lot! 00:05:39.03\00:05:41.93 The establishment's "Flat Liner Fries" are cooked in 00:05:41.93\00:05:45.23 pure lard, and soft drinks are made with real sugar. 00:05:45.23\00:05:49.23 And anyone who weighs over 350 pounds can eat for free. 00:05:49.23\00:05:55.63 "So bad for you it's shocking" is the claim made. 00:05:55.63\00:05:58.80 (Nodding...) Health Matters. 00:07:52.63\00:07:54.96 It's fair to assume that a lot of the food that's 00:07:54.96\00:07:57.16 available to us today simply isn't good for us. 00:07:57.16\00:08:00.36 But where do we go to get the information that we need to 00:08:00.36\00:08:02.50 help us make the right decisions. 00:08:02.50\00:08:05.80 In Australia a professor called Bruce Neal, the senior 00:08:05.80\00:08:09.03 director of the George Institute for Global Health 00:08:09.03\00:08:12.33 has come out and said that diet and exercise campaigns 00:08:12.33\00:08:14.90 are so ineffective at preventing heart disease that 00:08:14.90\00:08:17.73 they should be abandoned and replaced with strict 00:08:17.73\00:08:21.16 regulation of salt levels in food combined with wider 00:08:21.16\00:08:24.23 medication use. 00:08:24.23\00:08:25.70 Professor Neal is saying that the government should stop 00:08:25.70\00:08:27.96 having a hands off approach and regulate the food 00:08:27.96\00:08:31.56 industry to bring about change. 00:08:31.56\00:08:33.96 But then one doctor says this and another doctor says that 00:08:33.96\00:08:36.96 - and it usually is not bad advice, usually - and in all 00:08:36.96\00:08:41.00 of the confusion we are just trying to do our best. 00:08:41.00\00:08:44.80 Let me make a suggestion. 00:08:44.80\00:08:46.90 The Bible encourages us to go to God and seek his advice 00:08:46.90\00:08:51.13 about things that are happening in our lives. 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.70 Has God ever failed to give you good advice? 00:08:53.70\00:08:56.50 No he hasn't. 00:08:56.50\00:08:57.73 Sometimes we say 'what would Jesus do about this'? 00:08:57.73\00:09:01.73 Well, what did Jesus eat when he was upon this earth and 00:09:01.73\00:09:05.36 better still what would Jesus eat if he were upon the earth 00:09:05.36\00:09:09.00 now? 00:09:09.00\00:09:10.63 Jesus was not raised in a wealthy family, which means 00:09:10.63\00:09:13.83 that as far as his diet went his family probably couldn't 00:09:13.83\00:09:17.60 afford too many extras - or too many expensive 00:09:17.60\00:09:21.36 alternatives. 00:09:21.36\00:09:22.96 In society today, if you come from a lower socio economic 00:09:22.96\00:09:25.70 background you're more likely to be sick, a smoker and/or a 00:09:25.70\00:09:29.06 drinker and have a poor diet. 00:09:29.06\00:09:30.70 That's what the researchers tell us. 00:09:30.70\00:09:33.13 So when the government looks at health issues they have to 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.20 keep those things in mind. 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.70 Now Jesus wasn't weighed down by that kind of diet or 00:09:36.70\00:09:40.40 lifestyle. 00:09:40.40\00:09:41.70 For thirty years Jesus had to work hard in his fathers 00:09:41.70\00:09:44.50 carpenter shop and no doubt ate a fairly typical 00:09:44.50\00:09:46.80 Mediterranean diet that was wholesome, unprocessed and in 00:09:46.80\00:09:52.06 line with the Jewish dietary laws. 00:09:52.06\00:09:54.56 He would have consumed little saturated fat, only natural 00:09:54.56\00:09:58.10 sugars, He would have got plenty of sleep and lots of 00:09:58.10\00:10:01.26 exercise. 00:10:01.26\00:10:02.70 Jesus would also have a heart full of love for his father 00:10:02.70\00:10:07.33 and have a concern for the needs of others. 00:10:07.33\00:10:10.50 And no doubt someone is tempted to say, "That's all 00:10:10.50\00:10:12.73 very well but I can't go back and live in Jesus time." 00:10:12.73\00:10:17.06 But the Word of God gives us guidelines for what we can 00:10:17.06\00:10:19.26 include in our busy modern lifestyles. 00:10:19.26\00:10:22.90 One thing I'm quite certain of: Jesus likely wouldn't 00:10:22.90\00:10:27.30 advise us to eat at the burger restaurant I talked 00:10:27.30\00:10:30.50 about a moment ago. 00:10:30.50\00:10:32.76 I mentioned previously the Jewish dietary laws just a 00:10:32.76\00:10:35.53 second back. 00:10:35.53\00:10:36.93 These were laws that God gave to Israel to preserve their 00:10:36.93\00:10:39.63 health. 00:10:39.63\00:10:40.73 The Hebrews had been slaves in Egypt for several hundred 00:10:40.73\00:10:43.03 years. 00:10:43.03\00:10:44.03 Yet even among that slave lifestyle they got to the 00:10:44.03\00:10:46.93 stage where they considered their food tolerable. 00:10:46.93\00:10:50.40 They later said this (you read it in Exodus 16), "Oh, 00:10:50.40\00:10:54.70 that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of 00:10:54.70\00:10:57.43 Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate 00:10:57.43\00:11:02.06 bread to the full! 00:11:02.06\00:11:04.06 For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill 00:11:04.06\00:11:07.10 this whole assembly with hunger." 00:11:07.10\00:11:10.63 Exodus 16:3But history tells us that the Egyptians 00:11:10.63\00:11:14.76 lifestyle wasn't too healthy. 00:11:14.76\00:11:17.93 The Egyptians suffered from every modern disease that we 00:11:17.93\00:11:20.50 suffer from today, except of course from modern diseases 00:11:20.50\00:11:23.06 such as AIDS. 00:11:23.06\00:11:24.60 Heart disease, Cancer, Cirrhosis of the liver, 00:11:24.60\00:11:28.20 Gallstones, Kidney stones, Gout, Arthritis, 00:11:28.20\00:11:30.86 Osteoporosis, Pneumonia, obesity - of course the 00:11:30.86\00:11:35.23 depictions of Egyptians by the artists of the time were 00:11:35.23\00:11:37.86 quite flattering, but they were some sick people. 00:11:37.86\00:11:41.10 God knew that when the children of Israel eventually 00:11:41.10\00:11:44.13 settled in the land that he had promised them they might 00:11:44.13\00:11:47.30 be tempted to adopt an Egyptian-style so he said 00:11:47.30\00:11:53.40 this. 00:11:53.40\00:11:54.76 "You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God 00:11:54.76\00:11:58.63 has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be 00:11:58.63\00:12:02.36 well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the 00:12:02.36\00:12:05.90 land which you shall possess." 00:12:05.90\00:12:08.80 Deuteronomy 5:33. 00:12:08.80\00:12:10.06 God through Solomon advised the people like this "My son, 00:12:10.06\00:12:16.73 give attention to my words; incline your ear to my 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.60 sayings. 00:12:19.60\00:12:20.60 Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.10 midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find 00:12:23.10\00:12:26.73 them, And health to all their flesh." 00:12:26.73\00:12:30.26 Proverbs 4:20-22. 00:12:30.26\00:12:31.26 Our present day knowledge has been gathered in little over 00:12:31.26\00:12:35.93 100 years or so. 00:12:35.93\00:12:38.00 However there was an efficient public health 00:12:38.00\00:12:40.03 program in effect some 3000 years back and how sad that 00:12:40.03\00:12:45.16 it was lost sight of for centuries. 00:12:45.16\00:12:47.90 Moses the great Egyptian leader and then Hebrew leader 00:12:47.90\00:12:50.53 was the founder of preventive medicine. 00:12:50.53\00:12:53.46 The children of Israel lived in the desert for 40 years 00:12:53.46\00:12:56.83 and not one of them got sick. 00:12:56.83\00:12:59.23 In just a moment - your moral-reasoning 00:15:43.90\00:15:47.30 ability - you compromise your ability to maintain an 00:15:47.30\00:15:50.93 optimum connection with God. 00:15:50.93\00:15:54.33 It just makes sense. 00:15:54.33\00:15:55.86 If you want your vehicle to run right you make sure it 00:15:55.86\00:15:58.00 gets the right fuel. 00:15:58.00\00:15:59.96 A farmer is going to make sure his or her farm animals 00:15:59.96\00:16:02.46 get the right food so those animals produce the best 00:16:02.46\00:16:05.36 results. 00:16:05.36\00:16:06.50 Athletes follow careful diets because they want the best 00:16:06.50\00:16:09.30 possible outcome when they compete. 00:16:09.30\00:16:11.66 And here we are involved in what Paul calls a battle 00:16:11.66\00:16:14.56 against spiritual darkness... 00:16:14.56\00:16:16.60 Don't you think we need every advantage we can get? 00:16:16.60\00:16:19.23 Of course we do. 00:16:19.23\00:16:21.36 Which is why God drew up the menu in the Garden of Eden. 00:16:21.36\00:16:24.60 It's why God provided the food for the children of 00:16:24.60\00:16:26.66 Israel when they were in the wilderness. 00:16:26.66\00:16:29.20 God knew that health matters. 00:16:29.20\00:16:32.33 Now I'ld like to show you a text from the book of 00:16:32.33\00:16:34.96 Proverbs. 00:16:34.96\00:16:35.96 Does the wisest man who ever lived give us good healthy 00:16:35.96\00:16:39.70 living advice? 00:16:39.70\00:16:40.83 Yes he does. 00:16:40.83\00:16:41.86 He talks about honey a number of times. 00:16:41.86\00:16:46.13 First he tells us to eat honey because it is good. 00:16:46.13\00:16:48.60 Solomon said in the book of Proverbs: "My son, eat honey 00:16:48.60\00:16:53.10 because it is good, and the honeycomb which is sweet to 00:16:53.10\00:16:56.60 your taste." 00:16:56.60\00:16:57.63 (Proverbs 24:13). 00:16:57.63\00:17:00.23 Now that is good news. 00:17:00.23\00:17:01.90 But tell me what parent would let their child loose with an 00:17:01.90\00:17:05.90 entire pot of honey? 00:17:05.90\00:17:07.80 We wouldn't do that because we know that wouldn't be good 00:17:07.80\00:17:10.26 for us. 00:17:10.26\00:17:11.70 What are the type of foods that are full of sugar that 00:17:11.70\00:17:14.00 we eat a lot of? 00:17:14.00\00:17:16.16 Confectionary, soft drinks ... 00:17:16.16\00:17:19.30 the list goes on. 00:17:19.30\00:17:20.30 It's a big list. 00:17:20.30\00:17:21.60 Is God giving us poor advice here? 00:17:21.60\00:17:24.80 No - we read in Proverbs 25:16, something that 00:17:24.80\00:17:29.63 balances this up. 00:17:29.63\00:17:31.10 Proverbs 25 and verse 16: "Have you found honey? 00:17:31.10\00:17:37.56 Eat only as much as you need, lest you be filled with it 00:17:37.56\00:17:44.13 and vomit." 00:17:44.13\00:17:45.26 I remember as a child that my brother went to a party and 00:17:45.26\00:17:48.06 got stuck into his favorite food. 00:17:48.06\00:17:50.63 We used to call them "Chocolate Crackles". 00:17:50.63\00:17:52.63 They were made out of Rice Krispies and chocolate and 00:17:52.63\00:17:56.60 honey. 00:17:56.60\00:17:58.50 This boy was in his element. 00:17:58.50\00:18:00.86 And without our mum looking over his shoulder, he ate 00:18:00.86\00:18:04.10 just as many of those things as he wanted to, not as many 00:18:04.10\00:18:08.20 as he needed to. 00:18:08.20\00:18:09.20 How did they work out? 00:18:09.20\00:18:12.40 Let's just say... 00:18:12.40\00:18:14.36 it wasn't pretty. 00:18:14.36\00:18:16.40 We read in Proverbs 25:27, "It is not good to eat much 00:18:16.40\00:18:21.96 honey." 00:18:21.96\00:18:22.96 (And what's meant by that is TOO much honey.) So there it 00:18:22.96\00:18:24.96 is, it is not good to eat too much honey, to much sweet 00:18:24.96\00:18:33.03 stuff. 00:18:33.03\00:18:35.83 That same brother of mine loves Mars bars. 00:18:35.83\00:18:38.30 At least he used to. 00:18:38.30\00:18:39.30 He ate them for years. 00:18:39.30\00:18:40.30 But he doesn't anymore (very often...) I asked him 00:18:40.30\00:18:43.00 recently why he gave them up. 00:18:43.00\00:18:44.43 He simply said: "Just too much sugar in them. 00:18:44.43\00:18:48.13 I know it's not good for me". 00:18:48.13\00:18:49.56 Well I am glad to say that you can teach an old dog new 00:18:49.56\00:18:54.23 tricks. 00:18:54.23\00:18:55.86 Let me share with you something. 00:18:55.86\00:18:57.86 I want to share with you another text out of the 00:18:57.86\00:19:00.96 Bible, this time from the book of Proverbs, from 00:19:00.96\00:19:04.30 Solomon, and notice what it says. 00:19:04.30\00:19:07.33 Proverbs 23:1-3 says this: 00:19:07.33\00:19:13.33 "When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider 00:19:16.33\00:19:19.46 carefully what is before you; and put a knife to your 00:19:19.46\00:19:22.90 throat if you are a man given to appetite. 00:19:22.90\00:19:25.90 Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food." 00:19:25.90\00:19:31.36 It seems to me Solomon is warning us about over-eating. 00:19:31.36\00:19:36.30 Overeating is one of the biggest issues that we have 00:19:36.30\00:19:38.40 today in society, healthwise. 00:19:38.40\00:19:40.76 You can go to restaurants in every city from sea to 00:19:40.76\00:19:43.70 shining sea and eat as much as you want which leads to 00:19:43.70\00:19:48.00 any number of things - including obesity. 00:19:48.00\00:19:51.20 Obesity is one of ... 00:19:51.20\00:19:57.20 pardon the expression ... 00:20:00.16\00:20:01.16 the biggest public health problems in the Western world 00:20:01.16\00:20:03.16 today. 00:20:03.16\00:20:04.16 It leads to a host of diseases and chronic 00:20:04.16\00:20:06.16 illnesses including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, 00:20:06.16\00:20:08.16 osteoarthritis, gall stones, gout, asthma... 00:20:08.16\00:20:10.16 the list goes on and on. 00:20:10.16\00:20:11.16 The Bible gives us good advice. 00:20:11.16\00:20:13.16 Don't over eat. 00:20:13.16\00:20:14.16 Along with overeating goes the national habit of eating 00:20:14.16\00:20:16.16 between meals. 00:20:16.16\00:20:17.20 This is a nation that has been encouraged to eat 00:20:17.20\00:20:19.96 whenever it wants, what it wants, how it wants. 00:20:19.96\00:20:22.96 It is best to follow the Bible's advice and teach 00:20:22.96\00:20:26.43 ourselves not to overeat and not to eat between meals. 00:20:26.43\00:20:32.16 This brother I've been telling you about told me 00:20:32.16\00:20:34.16 recently that he had lost about 9 pounds. 00:20:34.16\00:20:36.53 I thought, well, he must have got himself on the latest 00:20:36.53\00:20:38.53 wonder diet from Oprah or Kim Kardashian. 00:20:38.53\00:20:41.03 He said "No, no. 00:20:41.03\00:20:42.50 My wife suggested that I eat my meal on a smaller plate." 00:20:42.50\00:20:47.30 Simple. 00:20:47.30\00:20:48.43 He didn't notice any real difference until it seemed to 00:20:48.43\00:20:51.30 him as if his belt had stretched. 00:20:51.30\00:20:54.30 He suggested I try the same thing - the smaller plate... 00:20:54.30\00:20:57.30 and I suggested that he was meddling. 00:20:57.30\00:21:01.33 Solomon also tells us to avoid the "delicacies". 00:21:01.33\00:21:04.83 Now these are the extras, the treats, the indulgences we 00:21:04.83\00:21:08.56 like to eat. 00:21:08.56\00:21:10.06 Back in Solomon's time it seems like only the rich 00:21:10.06\00:21:12.16 could afford those things. 00:21:12.16\00:21:13.70 Today they are available to everyone. 00:21:13.70\00:21:17.53 When it comes to practical suggestions for our diet and 00:21:17.53\00:21:21.73 health, the Bible has got a lot to say. 00:21:21.73\00:21:24.16 Here's just one more point. 00:21:24.16\00:21:25.43 God gave the children of Israel extensive advice on 00:21:25.43\00:21:28.90 what they could or couldn't eat. 00:21:28.90\00:21:31.53 On what they should or shouldn't eat. 00:21:31.53\00:21:33.53 In Leviticus 3:17, God says. 00:21:33.53\00:21:35.93 "This shall be a perpetual statute throughout your 00:21:35.93\00:21:38.83 generations in all your dwellings: you shall eat 00:21:38.83\00:21:42.43 neither fat nor blood." 00:21:42.43\00:21:46.46 Interesting! 00:21:46.46\00:21:47.83 God told his people not to eat fat. 00:21:47.83\00:21:53.30 If that strikes you as strange, the truth is God was 00:21:53.30\00:21:57.13 simply up on the latest good health information. 00:21:57.13\00:22:00.36 I suspect that if you went to your doctor for health advice 00:22:00.36\00:22:03.20 he or she will tell you not to eat fat. 00:22:03.20\00:22:06.50 For many of us a low fat diet is just common sense. 00:22:06.50\00:22:10.60 You certainly don't get that at some of these hamburger 00:22:10.60\00:22:14.23 places we've been discussing. 00:22:14.23\00:22:16.63 God also advice about which animals should or shouldn't 00:22:16.63\00:22:21.50 be eaten. 00:22:21.50\00:22:22.50 Or perhaps I should say, may or may not be eaten. 00:22:22.50\00:22:26.43 It was as simple as this. 00:22:26.43\00:22:28.13 This is what God says. 00:22:28.13\00:22:29.13 You find it in the Holy Bible. 00:22:29.13\00:22:33.16 "Whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in 00:22:33.16\00:22:37.06 the seas or in the rivers--that you may eat. 00:22:37.06\00:22:40.83 But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins 00:22:40.83\00:22:45.43 and scales..." 00:22:45.43\00:22:46.43 God says leave it off the menu. 00:22:46.43\00:22:49.93 God said in the same chapter that birds of prey or those 00:22:49.93\00:22:53.83 birds that feed on offal or carrion - the scavengers and 00:22:53.83\00:22:57.43 carnivorous birds - God says we shouldn't eat them either. 00:22:57.43\00:23:01.73 The fact is they're likely the most likely to transmit 00:23:01.73\00:23:05.80 disease to humans. 00:23:05.80\00:23:08.00 If you're out driving and you see an animal that's been hit 00:23:08.00\00:23:10.03 by a car you don't say, "Good news, here's dinner!" 00:23:10.03\00:23:13.36 You know better than that. 00:23:13.36\00:23:15.33 Those birds see those animals on the side of the road, they 00:23:15.33\00:23:17.90 say "Good news! 00:23:17.90\00:23:18.90 Here's dinner!" 00:23:18.90\00:23:19.90 Why would we want to eat them? 00:23:19.90\00:23:23.33 God made clear that the only animals that should be eaten 00:23:23.33\00:23:27.13 are the ones that have a cloven hoof and chew the cud. 00:23:27.13\00:23:33.10 Now, that would be what? 00:23:33.10\00:23:34.60 Well - cows, goats, deer, sheep... 00:23:34.60\00:23:38.36 maybe some others. 00:23:38.36\00:23:39.53 But God said animals we shouldn't eat include the 00:23:39.53\00:23:43.06 camel - bound to disappoint you I know -
