The Bible says that people should 00:00:01.03\00:00:03.30 rejoice evermore. 00:00:03.30\00:00:05.93 So what if y're somebody who suffers from depression, 00:00:05.93\00:00:09.20 as do one in ten American adults? 00:00:09.20\00:00:12.26 Depression can seriously impact a person's Christian 00:00:12.26\00:00:15.86 experience, and depression has been implicated in the 00:00:15.86\00:00:18.86 deaths of very many people. 00:00:18.86\00:00:19.93 I've come to Weimar, California to speak with Dr. 00:00:19.93\00:00:23.80 Neil Nedley, the president of Nedley Health Solutions. 00:00:23.80\00:00:27.20 Today, part one of a two-part series on depression, its 00:00:27.20\00:00:30.43 causes and its cures. 00:00:30.43\00:00:33.23 Thanks for joining me today. 00:00:33.23\00:00:42.06 It has stood the test of time. 00:00:42.06\00:00:46.86 God's book. 00:00:46.86\00:00:48.20 The Bible. 00:00:48.20\00:00:51.76 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:00:51.76\00:00:56.66 It is written sharing hope around the globe. 00:00:56.66\00:01:11.46 Dr. Nedley, thank you very much for joining me today. 00:01:11.46\00:01:13.56 I'm just so thankful you've been able to make this time. 00:01:13.56\00:01:16.33 NN: Thanks for inviting me, John. 00:01:16.33\00:01:17.93 I'm glad to be here. 00:01:17.93\00:01:19.20 JB: Depression. 00:01:19.20\00:01:20.20 Let's start right at the beginning. 00:01:20.20\00:01:23.26 What is it? 00:01:23.26\00:01:24.66 NN: It is an epidemic in our society today. 00:01:24.66\00:01:27.76 It's dramatically increasing and it causes a lot of deep 00:01:27.76\00:01:31.50 sadness. 00:01:31.50\00:01:32.73 That's what most people equate with depression, 00:01:32.73\00:01:35.36 feelings of deep sadness. 00:01:35.36\00:01:37.23 But, you know, that's not the only symptom that you get. 00:01:37.23\00:01:40.60 You can actually not have that symptom, you can just 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.16 have a feeling of emptiness and have depression. 00:01:43.16\00:01:46.40 JB: Now when you talk about depression, you know, people, 00:01:46.40\00:01:48.13 PEOPLE have a bad day and they're not depressed. 00:01:48.13\00:01:51.20 People can be sad and not be depressed, they can just be 00:01:51.20\00:01:53.86 sad. 00:01:53.86\00:01:55.06 So there's a difference between being in a funk and 00:01:55.06\00:01:57.10 experiencing what is technically known as 00:01:57.10\00:01:59.36 depression. 00:01:59.36\00:02:00.33 NN: Yes. 00:02:00.33\00:02:01.23 JB: So how do we really describe this technical 00:02:01.23\00:02:03.33 depression? 00:02:03.33\00:02:04.46 If someone's depressed, they're going to exhibit 00:02:04.46\00:02:06.66 what? 00:02:06.66\00:02:07.63 NN: They're going to exhibit five, at least five of nine 00:02:07.63\00:02:10.23 symptoms for the majority of the time for the last two 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.76 weeks or more. 00:02:13.76\00:02:15.93 JB: Okay, so there are nine symptoms that qualify in this 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.30 basket known as depression. 00:02:19.30\00:02:21.33 NN: Correct. 00:02:21.33\00:02:22.60 JB: If you've got five of them, you're depressed. 00:02:22.60\00:02:25.00 NN: You have depression, yeah, as long as you have 00:02:25.00\00:02:26.66 those five the majority of the time. 00:02:26.66\00:02:28.20 So if you're sad for just one day out of 14, it doesn't 00:02:28.20\00:02:30.00 count. 00:02:30.00\00:02:30.90 But if you're sad the majority of the last 14 days, 00:02:30.90\00:02:35.06 then that would be symptom number one right there. 00:02:35.06\00:02:37.13 JB: Okay. 00:02:37.13\00:02:37.93 We're going to talk about those symptoms in just a 00:02:37.93\00:02:39.43 moment. 00:02:39.43\00:02:40.20 But first let's point out a couple of things. 00:02:40.20\00:02:42.63 One in 10 Americans suffer depression, correct? 00:02:42.63\00:02:44.93 NN: Correct. 00:02:44.93\00:02:45.90 Yes, right now as we're speaking. 00:02:45.90\00:02:47.63 JB: Okay. 00:02:47.63\00:02:48.56 nd how does that break down by gender? 00:02:48.56\00:02:50.16 NN: Well, one of four women will suffer from it at some 00:02:50.16\00:02:51.83 point in their life. 00:02:51.83\00:02:53.66 One out of eight men. 00:02:53.66\00:02:55.30 So it's twice as common in women as it is in men. 00:02:55.30\00:02:58.70 And it's actually increasing. 00:02:58.70\00:02:59.76 Those are kind of old statistics. 00:02:59.76\00:03:01.56 It may be, this newer generation, it looks like 00:03:01.56\00:03:03.90 it's going to be a one out of two lifetime risk for girls 00:03:03.90\00:03:06.30 that are growing up today, suffering from major 00:03:06.30\00:03:10.43 depression. 00:03:10.43\00:03:11.26 JB: One out of two? 00:03:11.26\00:03:12.40 NN: One out of two is what it's looking like. 00:03:12.40\00:03:14.63 JB: That is an epidemic. 00:03:14.63\00:03:15.93 NN: It is an epidemic, yeah. 00:03:15.93\00:03:17.00 It's dramatically increasing. 00:03:17.00\00:03:18.60 Each successive generation when we look at it from a 00:03:18.60\00:03:22.23 epidemiological standpoint, each successive generation 00:03:22.23\00:03:25.40 has had significantly more depression than the previous 00:03:25.40\00:03:28.30 generation. 00:03:28.30\00:03:29.20 JB: And my understanding is that, I don't want to 00:03:29.20\00:03:32.40 overstate this, but I'll tell you what I think and you can 00:03:32.40\00:03:34.50 correct me if you need to. 00:03:34.50\00:03:36.00 The majority of people who suffer depression aren't 00:03:36.00\00:03:39.30 aware that what they have is depression. 00:03:39.30\00:03:41.66 NN: That's true. 00:03:41.66\00:03:42.86 Actually, it's been well documented that about half of 00:03:42.86\00:03:46.53 people with major depression in the United States alone 00:03:46.53\00:03:50.90 are not diagnosed with it. 00:03:50.90\00:03:53.03 In other words, they haven't sought help, they haven't 00:03:53.03\00:03:56.00 gone to a caregiver to find out why they're having the 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.73 symptoms that they're having, and they just think it's a 00:03:58.73\00:04:01.16 normal part of their existence for where they're 00:04:01.16\00:04:03.93 at in life. 00:04:03.93\00:04:04.96 But depression is not normal. 00:04:04.96\00:04:06.50 It shouldn't be considered a normal part of existence. 00:04:06.50\00:04:10.33 JB: So there will be a lot of people watching us today who 00:04:10.33\00:04:14.56 might be completely unaware that they suffer from 00:04:14.56\00:04:18.10 depression. 00:04:18.10\00:04:19.00 NN: Yeah, they might learn something as a result of this 00:04:19.00\00:04:21.43 and might realize that they're actually suffering 00:04:21.43\00:04:23.40 from it. 00:04:23.40\00:04:24.26 JB: Okay. 00:04:24.26\00:04:25.16 Today we're talking about depression and its causes, 00:04:25.16\00:04:27.60 and a moment ago we talked about these nine points, if 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.63 you have five of them for the majority of the time over two 00:04:30.63\00:04:32.83 weeks, you're depressed. 00:04:32.83\00:04:34.43 NN: Yes. 00:04:34.43\00:04:35.46 JB: What are those? 00:04:35.46\00:04:36.70 Do you have time to talk about what those five points 00:04:36.70\00:04:38.53 are? 00:04:38.53\00:04:39.16 NN: Sure. 00:04:39.16\00:04:39.86 Yes. 00:04:39.86\00:04:40.23 The first one would be either a deep sadness or emptiness. 00:04:40.23\00:04:42.40 Men tend to feel the emptiness, women more of the 00:04:42.40\00:04:45.76 sadness, although the men can get sad too. 00:04:45.76\00:04:48.50 Women will tend to have crying spells where something 00:04:48.50\00:04:54.36 they preferred not happen, happened and they start to 00:04:54.36\00:04:57.50 cry and they say, well, that wasn't that bad, why am I 00:04:57.50\00:04:59.50 crying? 00:04:59.50\00:05:01.10 And so they'll tend to seek help a little more than men. 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.73 Men just tend to feel empty and think that that's normal. 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.36 But either one qualifies as symptom number one. 00:05:06.36\00:05:08.60 The second is apathy. 00:05:08.60\00:05:10.30 This is where you wake up in the morning and you're not 00:05:10.30\00:05:12.86 really interested in the day's activities. 00:05:12.86\00:05:16.30 You get up out of a sense of responsibility but you're not 00:05:16.30\00:05:19.30 really interested in the day. 00:05:19.30\00:05:21.03 And that is not a normal symptom to have the majority 00:05:21.03\00:05:24.00 of the time, and so apathy is distinctly abnormal. 00:05:24.00\00:05:28.46 The third one is agitation. 00:05:28.46\00:05:32.40 This is where you're more irritable than you used to be 00:05:32.40\00:05:35.83 or you would also qualify for symptom number three if 00:05:35.83\00:05:41.23 you've had a slowing of your muscle movement. 00:05:41.23\00:05:43.53 You've just kind of slowed down. 00:05:43.53\00:05:45.00 A lot of people don't recognize this until they see 00:05:45.00\00:05:46.90 themselves on a video that they've slowed down, but the 00:05:46.90\00:05:50.60 irritability and the slowness, that's the one the 00:05:50.60\00:05:52.60 individual may not recognize themselves, and they'll have 00:05:52.60\00:05:54.70 to ask their spouse, am I more irritable than I used to 00:05:54.70\00:05:56.83 be? 00:05:56.83\00:05:58.80 The spouse will definitely tell you, or your friends 00:05:58.80\00:06:00.10 might tell you that as well. 00:06:00.10\00:06:01.83 The fourth is a lack of concentration. 00:06:01.83\00:06:06.50 This is where you don't really have the ability to 00:06:06.50\00:06:11.46 sort things through to make complex decisions and you 00:06:11.46\00:06:15.50 recognize that you're just not able to do that mental 00:06:15.50\00:06:19.83 task like you used to. 00:06:19.83\00:06:22.23 Another symptom is sleep disturbances. 00:06:22.23\00:06:24.66 The most common sleep disturbance in someone with 00:06:24.66\00:06:26.70 depression is early-morning awakening. 00:06:26.70\00:06:29.86 This is where they go to bed, they can sleep okay, but then 00:06:29.86\00:06:33.30 they wake up too early and can't get back to sleep. 00:06:33.30\00:06:36.46 But you would also qualify for this symptom if you had 00:06:36.46\00:06:39.26 insomnia. 00:06:39.26\00:06:40.20 In other words, you're not able to go to sleep well. 00:06:40.20\00:06:42.33 Or if you have hypersomnia. 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.80 Many people with depression suffer from just being sleepy 00:06:44.80\00:06:47.80 all the time. 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.76 We have people who come to our program who have been 00:06:49.76\00:06:52.03 sleeping 20 hours a day for weeks. 00:06:52.03\00:06:55.63 Severe depression. 00:06:55.63\00:06:57.43 And so that's another symptom. 00:06:57.43\00:06:59.03 Another symptom is weight or appetite changes. 00:06:59.03\00:07:01.86 The most common is weight gain. 00:07:01.86\00:07:03.60 People tend to self-medicate themselves with chocolate and 00:07:03.60\00:07:06.33 soda pop and food, and as a result of this 00:07:06.33\00:07:09.93 self-medicating they tend to gain weight, but rather 00:07:09.93\00:07:13.00 severe sudden onset depression often has anorexia 00:07:13.00\00:07:17.80 or weight loss. 00:07:17.80\00:07:19.23 JB: So it can go either way. 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.33 NN: It can go either way, yeah. 00:07:20.33\00:07:21.73 Another symptom is fatigue. 00:07:21.73\00:07:24.26 Now fatigue is different than apathy. 00:07:24.26\00:07:27.16 Apathy means that you don't have the interest in the 00:07:27.16\00:07:29.90 day's activities, fatigue means you just are tired and 00:07:29.90\00:07:32.73 you don't know why you're tired. 00:07:32.73\00:07:34.56 You run out of energy and you'd like to have more. 00:07:34.56\00:07:37.43 And that's a very prominent symptom in the people that 00:07:37.43\00:07:40.50 see me as a physician in an internal medicine office. 00:07:40.50\00:07:44.53 And then the more severe symptoms tend to be 00:07:44.53\00:07:47.03 associated with morbid thoughts. 00:07:47.03\00:07:49.56 This is where the individual has a preoccupation with 00:07:49.56\00:07:53.96 death or symbols of death. 00:07:53.96\00:07:57.06 And so it's not just thinking about taking your own life, 00:07:57.06\00:07:59.73 although that would definitely qualify. 00:07:59.73\00:08:01.80 It might be fantasizing about someone else being dead. 00:08:01.80\00:08:05.10 Or just preoccupation with death in general. 00:08:05.10\00:08:07.73 And we are seeing that a lot more commonly today with 00:08:07.73\00:08:10.13 people tattooing skeletons and symbols of death. 00:08:10.13\00:08:14.00 There's even a new bathing suit line that my wife showed 00:08:14.00\00:08:16.30 me in a fashion magazine that just came out where the 00:08:16.30\00:08:19.60 ladies' bathing suits are all skeletons, and people are 00:08:19.60\00:08:24.16 resonating with this. 00:08:24.16\00:08:25.36 If you resonate with that, it's a sign that it's a 00:08:25.36\00:08:27.50 morbid thought. 00:08:27.50\00:08:28.66 Not really normal, and if you have the other symptoms that 00:08:28.66\00:08:32.73 go along with it, it could be a clear sign that you're 00:08:32.73\00:08:35.53 experiencing depression. 00:08:35.53\00:08:37.60 And companies are capitalizing on people's 00:08:37.60\00:08:40.66 morbid thoughts by changing their fashion statements to 00:08:40.66\00:08:45.23 resonate with them. 00:08:45.23\00:08:46.43 JB: Right. 00:08:46.43\00:08:47.10 And if a person has five of those pretty consistently 00:08:47.10\00:08:49.70 over a two-week period, that person really might well 00:08:49.70\00:08:52.83 could be clinically depressed. 00:08:52.83\00:08:55.50 NN: Exactly. 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.20 JB: But there is a way out. 00:08:56.20\00:08:57.16 NN: There is. 00:08:57.16\00:08:58.56 JB: Thank God for that. 00:08:58.56\00:08:59.53 NN: Yes. 00:08:59.53\00:09:00.26 JB: And we're going to talk a little bit more about the 00:09:00.26\00:09:02.20 causes of depression, what causes this stuff to actually 00:09:02.20\00:09:05.76 take place in just a couple of moments. 00:09:05.76\00:09:09.16 Depression, serious business. 00:09:09.16\00:09:11.16 The Bible says that we ought to be full of joy as 00:09:11.16\00:09:14.13 believers in Jesus. 00:09:14.13\00:09:15.56 That's not always the case for everybody. 00:09:15.56\00:09:17.96 Don't go away, we'll be back in a moment with more. 00:09:17.96\00:09:22.40 In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God says "It is written 'Man 00:09:22.40\00:09:26.26 shall not live by bread alone but by every word that 00:09:26.26\00:09:29.96 proceeds out of the mouth of God'." 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.90 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:09:31.90\00:09:35.26 president of Nedley Health Solutions and 00:09:59.36\00:10:02.80 the founder of the Nedley Clinic. 00:10:02.80\00:10:06.86 Dr. Nedley, you are, in fact, an internal medicine 00:10:06.86\00:10:09.46 physician. 00:10:09.46\00:10:10.26 NN: Correct. 00:10:10.26\00:10:11.46 JB: But you've become very interested in and very 00:10:11.46\00:10:13.90 effective at treating depression. 00:10:13.90\00:10:16.86 NN: Yes. 00:10:16.86\00:10:17.86 JB: So how did you get from A to B? 00:10:17.86\00:10:19.50 How did that happen? 00:10:19.50\00:10:20.36 NN: Well, it's kind of interesting. 00:10:20.36\00:10:21.86 When I was a faculty member at Kettering Medical Center, 00:10:21.86\00:10:25.53 Wright State University, I used to teach residents. 00:10:25.53\00:10:28.80 And I used to teach my residents in internal 00:10:28.80\00:10:30.66 medicine that they needed to learn the common diseases 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.36 well. 00:10:33.36\00:10:35.00 I wanted them to learn pneumonia as good as a 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.16 pulmonologist. 00:10:37.16\00:10:38.36 I wanted them to learn congestive heart failure as 00:10:38.36\00:10:40.60 good as a cardiologist, or gastroesophageal reflux 00:10:40.60\00:10:43.16 disease as good as a gastroenterologist. 00:10:43.16\00:10:46.03 Why? 00:10:46.03\00:10:46.80 Because they were going to be seeing these diseases almost 00:10:46.80\00:10:49.20 every day of their life and they really needed to know as 00:10:49.20\00:10:53.63 much as the expert does in the common diseases. 00:10:53.63\00:10:57.03 After I finished my teaching career I set up a practice, 00:10:57.03\00:11:01.60 the Nedley Clinic, you just mentioned it, in Ardmore, 00:11:01.60\00:11:04.33 Oklahoma, and there was an article that crossed my desk 00:11:04.33\00:11:07.70 from the Archives of Internal Medicine showing that up to 00:11:07.70\00:11:10.93 one in three people that an internist sees is suffering 00:11:10.93\00:11:15.46 from major depression. 00:11:15.46\00:11:17.20 And I thought, well, that's not true in my patient 00:11:17.20\00:11:19.16 population in Oklahoma. 00:11:19.16\00:11:20.76 But I thought, you know, I can't just assume that, we'll 00:11:20.76\00:11:22.66 test them. 00:11:22.66\00:11:23.96 So I had them go through the little screening test, the 00:11:23.96\00:11:27.30 nine-point screening test that we discussed earlier, 00:11:27.30\00:11:30.10 when they came in and I found out that it wasn't quite that 00:11:30.10\00:11:33.06 high, it was about one in four, but then it struck me, 00:11:33.06\00:11:36.23 common disease. 00:11:36.23\00:11:37.63 Do I know this as good as a psychiatrist? 00:11:37.63\00:11:40.73 And I had to admit that I didn't and so I started to 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.76 learn at the feet of preeminent psychiatrists, and 00:11:43.76\00:11:47.36 then I recognized my need of more study because there 00:11:47.36\00:11:51.66 hadn't been enough research done on the actual underlying 00:11:51.66\00:11:53.46 causes. 00:11:53.46\00:11:55.96 And as an internist, when I see swollen feet, I don't 00:11:55.96\00:12:00.06 diagnose swollen-foot syndrome and send them out 00:12:00.06\00:12:03.50 the door with a diuretic, I try to find the cause of the 00:12:03.50\00:12:06.00 swollen feet, of which there can be about 100 different 00:12:06.00\00:12:08.50 causes. 00:12:08.50\00:12:10.13 And so I thought let's try to find out what are the real 00:12:10.13\00:12:13.00 causes of depression, and I did some extra research and 00:12:13.00\00:12:16.86 that's how I started to get very involved in this and 00:12:16.86\00:12:20.70 then started treating my own patients with results that 00:12:20.70\00:12:22.93 were far better than what I had ever anticipated. 00:12:22.93\00:12:26.33 JB: I've seen the results of what you've done. 00:12:26.33\00:12:29.50 Your depression recovery seminars have been held from 00:12:29.50\00:12:32.03 sea to shining sea in many, many places. 00:12:32.03\00:12:34.33 I recall seeing the results of depression recovery 00:12:34.33\00:12:37.83 seminars, no names were shown, I must point that out, 00:12:37.83\00:12:40.83 and my friend said, this red line is how depressed people 00:12:40.83\00:12:43.36 were, this green line is how undepressed they were, or how 00:12:43.36\00:12:46.33 they were at the end. 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.73 And I said to my friend, who had conducted this Neil 00:12:47.73\00:12:50.90 Nedley Depression Recovery Seminar, are you fudging the 00:12:50.90\00:12:53.40 results.. 00:12:53.40\00:12:54.70 NN: (LAUGHTER) JB:... 00:12:54.70\00:12:55.63 because they were so dramatic. 00:12:55.63\00:12:57.70 Depression is something a person can come back from. 00:12:57.70\00:13:00.26 NN: Absolutely, absolutely. 00:13:00.26\00:13:01.93 JB: Okay, well, what causes it? 00:13:01.93\00:13:04.30 What are these underlying causes? 00:13:04.30\00:13:05.90 NN: Well, there are 10 categories of causes that we 00:13:05.90\00:13:08.23 uncovered in our research. 00:13:08.23\00:13:11.86 And there's actually over 100 separate identifiable causes 00:13:11.86\00:13:14.40 for depression, but they can be categorized in 10 00:13:14.40\00:13:18.16 different ways. 00:13:18.16\00:13:19.56 And you have to have four of those categories of causes 00:13:19.56\00:13:22.56 before you end up with depression or anxiety 00:13:22.56\00:13:25.00 disorder. 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.13 But one of them is frontal lobe causes. 00:13:27.13\00:13:29.80 That's the one that we deal with first. 00:13:29.80\00:13:32.10 The frontal lobe of the brain is the front portion of the 00:13:32.10\00:13:35.26 brain. 00:13:35.26\00:13:36.40 It's the analytical portion of the brain. 00:13:36.40\00:13:39.30 Scientific studies show it's the seat of spirituality, 00:13:39.30\00:13:42.90 morality and the will. 00:13:42.90\00:13:44.90 It's the reason why we are spiritual beings and human 00:13:44.90\00:13:48.26 beings worship because our frontal lobe size is so much 00:13:48.26\00:13:51.73 greater than cats and dogs that you don't see in worship 00:13:51.73\00:13:55.13 services, because they can't identify with it. 00:13:55.13\00:13:58.30 But the frontal lobe circulation when it goes 00:13:58.30\00:14:01.66 down, it is a major setup for depression or anxiety 00:14:01.66\00:14:06.36 disorders and there's a lot of different things that can 00:14:06.36\00:14:09.06 fit under the categories of what can suppress or enhance 00:14:09.06\00:14:11.76 frontal-lobe function. 00:14:11.76\00:14:13.36 JB: I've got to jump in with "such as" ... 00:14:13.36\00:14:15.23 give me three, four or five pretty quickly. 00:14:15.23\00:14:17.20 Things that suppress frontal-lobe functions. 00:14:17.20\00:14:19.50 NN: Well, for instance, rapid scene of reference, 00:14:19.50\00:14:23.10 entertainment television ... 00:14:23.10\00:14:24.56 JB: Oh, okay. 00:14:24.56\00:14:25.43 NN: ... 00:14:25.43\00:14:26.26 suppresses the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:14:26.26\00:14:28.46 It can actually set yourself up for an addiction. 00:14:28.46\00:14:31.66 JB: And most people are just feasting on that every day. 00:14:31.66\00:14:34.06 NN: Right. 00:14:34.06\00:14:34.86 Certain types of music. 00:14:34.86\00:14:37.03 The syncopated, boom-cha, rock-and-roll music can 00:14:37.03\00:14:41.23 actually suppress the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:14:41.23\00:14:44.83 JB: Something else that masses of population are 00:14:44.83\00:14:47.50 into. 00:14:47.50\00:14:48.46 NN: You know, the interesting thing about this, John, is a 00:14:48.46\00:14:50.53 lot of the things that I mention that detract from 00:14:50.53\00:14:53.16 frontal-lobe function people do to try to get happiness. 00:14:53.16\00:15:00.33 And this is the ironic thing; there are more fun things to 00:15:00.33\00:15:03.46 do than ever before in human history, but yet we have more 00:15:03.46\00:15:06.96 depression than ever before in human history. 00:15:06.96\00:15:10.63 If these fun things actually prevented or cured depression 00:15:10.63\00:15:14.86 we should see the lowest rates of depression on the 00:15:14.86\00:15:16.93 planet. 00:15:16.93\00:15:18.30 These rapid-moving video games can actually suppress 00:15:18.30\00:15:20.40 the front lobe of the brain. 00:15:20.40\00:15:22.90 A lot of this screen time, this entertainment screen 00:15:22.90\00:15:28.70 time that America is fascinated with, a lot of it 00:15:28.70\00:15:31.70 does suppress frontal-lobe function. 00:15:31.70\00:15:33.83 And then just when we're not really exercising the 00:15:33.83\00:15:39.06 spiritual part of our brain, when we're not involved in 00:15:39.06\00:15:42.63 worship, when we're not involved in spiritual 00:15:42.63\00:15:46.43 analysis or reading, like the Bible, and analyzing 00:15:46.43\00:15:51.83 scripture with scripture, that's going to be a hit as 00:15:51.83\00:15:53.70 well. 00:15:53.70\00:15:56.13 And it's not that necessarily we have to have the Bible, 00:15:56.13\00:16:00.90 but we need to have some sort of analysis, some sort of 00:16:00.90\00:16:02.16 abstract analysis that can help frontal-lobe function. 00:16:02.16\00:16:07.66 JB: Okay. 00:16:07.66\00:16:08.46 NN: So the second area is exercise, actually, lifestyle 00:16:08.46\00:16:13.83 causes. 00:16:13.83\00:16:14.90 Physical exercise actually helps the brain. 00:16:14.90\00:16:19.46 Under the lifestyle causes, sunlight. 00:16:19.46\00:16:21.60 The light and the blue sky that we're under here at 00:16:21.60\00:16:23.76 Weimar actually helps depression. 00:16:23.76\00:16:27.10 It improves serotonin levels in the brain. 00:16:27.10\00:16:28.80 So when we're indoors, not experiencing outdoor light, 00:16:28.80\00:16:32.06 we're getting a hit with that. 00:16:32.06\00:16:34.66 And then not regularly breathing fresh air. 00:16:34.66\00:16:37.60 Here at Weimar we've got these beautiful pine trees 00:16:37.60\00:16:40.70 exuding negative ions, just breathing that in can help in 00:16:40.70\00:16:44.56 regards to depression. 00:16:44.56\00:16:46.50 The third category is circadian rhythm. 00:16:46.50\00:16:49.50 This has to do with our sleep-wake cycle and our 00:16:49.50\00:16:52.46 regularity. 00:16:52.46\00:16:53.70 The more irregular we are in schedule, the more that is a 00:16:53.70\00:16:56.50 blow to the brain. 00:16:56.50\00:16:57.86 The brain likes a regular regimented schedule and the 00:16:57.86\00:17:03.26 best circadian rhythm as far as optimal performance for 00:17:03.26\00:17:06.83 the brain is early to bed, early to rise. 00:17:06.83\00:17:09.63 You make more melatonin and it's one of the reasons why 00:17:09.63\00:17:13.63 almost across the board successful business people 00:17:13.63\00:17:17.20 tend to be early-to-bed, early-to-rise people. 00:17:17.20\00:17:20.63 Highly successful. 00:17:20.63\00:17:21.63 The only exception to that is the entertainment industry 00:17:21.63\00:17:24.63 and those individuals, of course, have much higher 00:17:24.63\00:17:27.46 rates of depression, but they're late-nighters just 00:17:27.46\00:17:30.16 because of their occupation. 00:17:30.16\00:17:31.43 The fourth category after circadian rhythm is 00:17:31.43\00:17:37.26 nutrition. 00:17:37.26\00:17:38.73 What we are putting into our body actually gets turned 00:17:38.73\00:17:41.46 into neurotransmitters. 00:17:41.46\00:17:43.23 And so there's a lot to nutrition and the brain and a 00:17:43.23\00:17:47.43 lot to the typical American diet. 00:17:47.43\00:17:50.33 It's short in omega-3, not high in tryptophan and 00:17:50.33\00:17:54.16 carbohydrates to the degree to make enough dopamine and 00:17:54.16\00:17:57.06 norepinephrine and serotonin. 00:17:57.06\00:17:58.53 And so we really do a good nutritional analysis on our 00:17:58.53\00:18:02.36 patients and change that factor. 00:18:02.36\00:18:04.63 Fifth has to do with addiction hits. 00:18:04.63\00:18:08.40 If you're addicted to any substance or non-substance, 00:18:08.40\00:18:11.90 be it gambling, pornography, alcohol, any addiction can 00:18:11.90\00:18:16.23 actually be a setup for depression. 00:18:16.23\00:18:20.00 Not in and of itself causing it, but if you have three 00:18:20.00\00:18:24.33 other causes and that, it's going to tide you over into 00:18:24.33\00:18:26.96 rather severe depression. 00:18:26.96\00:18:29.50 JB: Let's touch on these remaining two or three or 00:18:29.50\00:18:31.36 four just quickly. 00:18:31.36\00:18:32.80 NN: In regards to our social situation, it can have a role 00:18:32.80\00:18:36.40 to play. 00:18:36.40\00:18:37.50 In regards to medical conditions, like thyroid, 00:18:37.50\00:18:41.00 that can have a role to play. 00:18:41.00\00:18:43.00 In regards to genetics, that can also have a role to play. 00:18:43.00\00:18:48.36 And then there is other factors that we lump under 00:18:48.36\00:18:53.80 toxins that can have a role to play. 00:18:53.80\00:18:56.26 JB: Sure. 00:18:56.26\00:18:57.23 Depression is a major issue affecting masses of people in 00:18:57.23\00:19:00.63 the United States and other countries around the world. 00:19:00.63\00:19:03.16 Who are getting depressed? 00:19:03.16\00:19:06.56 Who are the people suffering from depression today? 00:19:06.56\00:19:09.13 Is it the people you would expect or could it be that 00:19:09.13\00:19:12.43 nice lady living next door? 00:19:12.43\00:19:14.33 And what does the Bible say about depression and does it 00:19:14.33\00:19:18.23 shine a light on the lives of depressed individuals? 00:19:18.23\00:19:21.60 Were there people in the Bible who were depressed? 00:19:21.60\00:19:24.03 We'll have that information for you in just a moment. 00:19:24.03\00:19:26.90 It Is Written is 00:19:41.50\00:19:43.40 Visit our website: itiswritten.com today. 00:19:43.40\00:19:45.46 JB: Dr. Nedley, who fits the profile of the typical 00:19:45.46\00:19:51.26 depression sufferer? 00:19:51.26\00:19:53.66 NN: Well, you know, that profile is so broad. 00:19:53.66\00:19:56.70 It really is. 00:19:56.70\00:19:58.10 Very likely your next door neighbor. 00:19:58.10\00:20:00.10 It's probably someone you're working with. 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.76 In fact, chances are, not just chances, it's actually 00:20:02.76\00:20:07.76 basically a 100% chance that you know someone that has 00:20:07.76\00:20:10.46 depression. 00:20:10.46\00:20:11.66 Any viewer knows someone that has depression or they have 00:20:11.66\00:20:14.46 depression themselves. 00:20:14.46\00:20:15.66 That's how common it is. 00:20:15.66\00:20:16.43 JB: Speaking stereotypically, I admit I'm doing this, you 00:20:16.43\00:20:20.10 know, I'm thinking depression, a kid with black 00:20:20.10\00:20:22.76 clothing and long stringy hair who mopes around sitting 00:20:22.76\00:20:25.90 in a corner and whatever, but it could just as well be the 00:20:25.90\00:20:29.00 lady next door in the business suit who's taking 00:20:29.00\00:20:31.40 the bus to work. 00:20:31.40\00:20:32.36 NN: Exactly. 00:20:32.36\00:20:33.36 Yeah, both of them could have depression. 00:20:33.36\00:20:35.50 I mean, antidepressants are the number one selling 00:20:35.50\00:20:37.03 category of drugs today and they're flying off shelves in 00:20:37.03\00:20:42.70 pharmacies. 00:20:42.70\00:20:43.43 Anyone who works at a pharmacy sees all sorts of 00:20:43.43\00:20:45.96 people, even professional people, people with suits and 00:20:45.96\00:20:50.00 ties that appear to have some level of success taking these 00:20:50.00\00:20:54.16 in order to feel like they can function. 00:20:54.16\00:20:57.30 JB: Depression even goes so far as to wreak havoc with a 00:20:57.30\00:21:00.26 person's relationship with God, doesn't it? 00:21:00.26\00:21:02.06 NN: Oh, absolutely. 00:21:02.06\00:21:03.33 Yeah, I mean, because of what it does to the frontal lobe, 00:21:03.33\00:21:05.93 the area of spirituality and morality and the will, it's a 00:21:05.93\00:21:08.43 major threat to the spiritual part. 00:21:08.43\00:21:11.60 Now that's not saying that you can't run into depression 00:21:11.60\00:21:13.60 if you're a spiritual person. 00:21:13.60\00:21:18.63 We know from Elijah, Elijah was a very spiritual person 00:21:18.63\00:21:22.96 and very connected with God and believed his Word, but 00:21:22.96\00:21:26.76 slipped into very severe depression for good reasons. 00:21:26.76\00:21:30.46 JB: That's interesting, isn't it. 00:21:30.46\00:21:32.13 Fervent, committed, faithful believers in Jesus can suffer 00:21:32.13\00:21:35.40 serious depression. 00:21:35.40\00:21:37.00 NN: Yes, they can. 00:21:37.00\00:21:38.00 JB: And can we say through no fault of their own? 00:21:38.00\00:21:41.40 What I mean is they're not bad people, they didn't give 00:21:41.40\00:21:43.70 up on God, they just fell into some of these situations 00:21:43.70\00:21:46.40 that lead to depression. 00:21:46.40\00:21:47.46 NN: Yeah. 00:21:47.46\00:21:48.73 And they did it ignorantly, you know. 00:21:48.73\00:21:51.03 In Elijah's situation, he didn't realize what he was 00:21:51.03\00:21:53.76 doing to lead himself into it. 00:21:53.76\00:21:57.33 JB: We've got other people in the Bible, too, suffering 00:21:57.33\00:21:58.86 from depression? 00:21:58.86\00:21:59.46 NN: Yeah. 00:21:59.46\00:22:00.16 Saul suffered from depression and Saul had definite 00:22:00.16\00:22:02.70 reasons. 00:22:02.70\00:22:03.53 Unfortunately he went through a therapeutic program but he 00:22:03.53\00:22:05.93 never took care of the underlying distorted 00:22:05.93\00:22:09.43 thoughts. 00:22:09.43\00:22:10.13 That's another characteristic of virtually every depressed 00:22:10.13\00:22:12.06 individual. 00:22:12.06\00:22:12.83 They have thoughts on the surface that appear valid, 00:22:12.83\00:22:15.73 but when we actually delve into them, they are 00:22:15.73\00:22:20.13 irrational, just plain wrong, and twisted thinking is a 00:22:20.13\00:22:23.73 major cause of suffering. 00:22:23.73\00:22:25.53 And that was true with Saul, it was true with Elijah, he 00:22:25.53\00:22:28.03 had twisted thinking. 00:22:28.03\00:22:29.23 It was true with Solomon. 00:22:29.23\00:22:30.83 JB: Tell me about Solomon. 00:22:30.83\00:22:31.93 NN: Well, Solomon tried to do everything that would 00:22:31.93\00:22:35.33 experience pleasure and make him happy. 00:22:35.33\00:22:38.03 So he tried alcohol, he tried opium, he tried pornography, 00:22:38.03\00:22:42.53 had live pornography. 00:22:42.53\00:22:44.03 In fact, he said, anything that anyone else was doing 00:22:44.03\00:22:47.23 where it looked like they were having fun he wanted to 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.06 do it. 00:22:49.06\00:22:50.23 And he said, therefore he hated life and it brought him 00:22:50.23\00:22:52.56 to despair. 00:22:52.56\00:22:53.83 And so he got into the culture of today. 00:22:53.83\00:22:57.13 One of the reasons why we have so much depression and 00:22:57.13\00:22:59.73 that's why he wrote the book Ecclesiastes was to warn 00:22:59.73\00:23:01.50 young people to not go where he went, because it's going 00:23:01.50\00:23:05.10 to lead to problems. 00:23:05.10\00:23:06.20 JB: Strange isn't it? 00:23:06.20\00:23:07.03 You mentioned this before. 00:23:07.03\00:23:08.40 So much in the world that offers us fun and a thrill 00:23:08.40\00:23:11.76 and a good time and distractions, and yet we're 00:23:11.76\00:23:14.53 more depressed than we've ever been. 00:23:14.53\00:23:16.43 What? 00:23:16.43\00:23:16.96 Is it true? 00:23:16.96\00:23:17.63 Are we more depressed than we've ever been? 00:23:17.63\00:23:19.23 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:19.23\00:23:20.03 More depressed than we've ever been. 00:23:20.03\00:23:21.70 JB: God has a way out, yes? 00:23:21.70\00:23:22.63 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:22.63\00:23:24.23 JB: Okay. 00:23:24.23\00:23:24.80 Tell me a little bit about what the Bible says God's 00:23:24.80\00:23:28.30 willing to do in a person's life to bring him back to 00:23:28.30\00:23:30.53 where he wants him to be? 00:23:30.53\00:23:31.86 NN: Well, he is willing to change disappointment into 00:23:31.86\00:23:34.80 appointment. 00:23:34.80\00:23:36.10 And there are steps to get there. 00:23:36.10\00:23:38.13 JB: Okay, now ... 00:23:38.13\00:23:38.90 sorry, I'm jumping in here. 00:23:38.90\00:23:40.06 In your Depression Recovery Seminar you use that very 00:23:40.06\00:23:42.50 phrase. 00:23:42.50\00:23:44.00 NN: Absolutely. 00:23:44.00\00:23:45.10 JB: Tell me about that. 00:23:45.10\00:23:45.90 NN: From disappointment to appointment. 00:23:45.90\00:23:47.60 And we actually study, in order to get the frontal lobe 00:23:47.60\00:23:49.70 going, we study the book of Daniel. 00:23:49.70\00:23:51.80 Daniel's revered by the Jews, revered by the Muslims, 00:23:51.80\00:23:55.53 revered by Christians. 00:23:55.53\00:23:57.13 Even secular individuals. 00:23:57.13\00:23:58.40 Isaac Newton was very interested in Daniel, and 00:23:58.40\00:24:02.30 every story, every chapter in Daniel starts out with a 00:24:02.30\00:24:06.00 disappointment, ends with an appointment. 00:24:06.00\00:24:07.73 And there's a spiritual key that transforms it from one 00:24:07.73\00:24:11.76 to the other. 00:24:11.76\00:24:12.60 And that's part of the therapeutic program that we 00:24:12.60\00:24:14.20 put people on. 00:24:14.20\00:24:15.30 JB: How important do you think the Bible itself plays, 00:24:15.30\00:24:18.56 how important a role does it play bringing people out of 00:24:18.56\00:24:22.93 depression into the place God wants them to be? 00:24:22.93\00:24:25.70 NN: Well I think it plays a very important role, because 00:24:25.70\00:24:28.80 of that spiritual nature that we have in the frontal lobe 00:24:28.80\00:24:31.36 of the brain. 00:24:31.36\00:24:33.03 And so it plays a crucial role. 00:24:33.03\00:24:35.66 Yes, you can get rid of depression without it, but 00:24:35.66\00:24:38.13 you can also get rid of depression far faster and 00:24:38.13\00:24:41.33 also far more comprehensively when we have that spiritual 00:24:41.33\00:24:44.73 part intact, because that also gives us the ability, 00:24:44.73\00:24:48.56 the power to be able to do things that we don't want to 00:24:48.56\00:24:53.73 do now. 00:24:53.73\00:24:54.90 We may not want to go out and exercise. 00:24:54.90\00:24:57.06 We may not want to eat foods that are high in omega-3. 00:24:57.06\00:24:59.30 We may not want to get the light therapy. 00:24:59.30\00:25:01.56 Depressed people tend to not be very motivated people. 00:25:01.56\00:25:04.13 But when that spiritual part is there, the motivation can 00:25:04.13\00:25:06.30 come and they can start making significant changes in 00:25:06.30\00:25:11.00 their life for the better. 00:25:11.00\00:25:13.40 JB: Now, we talked about some of the things that cause 00:25:13.40\00:25:15.86 depression and we talked about some of those danger 00:25:15.86\00:25:19.70 areas that you identified several of them. 00:25:19.70\00:25:23.26 What should a person do who feels that he or she might be 00:25:23.26\00:25:25.86 dealing with depression? 00:25:25.86\00:25:27.16 NN: Well I would recommend that they maybe go to our 00:25:27.16\00:25:29.66 website, take the test. 00:25:29.66\00:25:31.26 We have a little test online that can tell them if they 00:25:31.26\00:25:33.80 have depression, anxiety, and it can also tell them which 00:25:33.80\00:25:37.20 one of those 10 categories of hits or multiple hits are 00:25:37.20\00:25:40.06 active in them, and then get the resources and get on the 00:25:40.06\00:25:44.06 program that will reverse it. 00:25:44.06\00:25:46.13 JB: www.drnedley.com Dr. 00:25:46.13\00:25:47.96 Nedley, thanks for joining me today. 00:25:47.96\00:25:49.73 NN: Oh, it's been great. 00:25:49.73\00:25:51.13 JB: Friends, thank you for joining me, too. 00:25:51.13\00:25:53.33 Depression is a serious, serious issue and it's so 00:25:53.33\00:25:55.16 serious that it can even get in between a person and God. 00:25:55.16\00:25:58.63 I don't want that going on in your life and if you know 00:25:58.63\00:26:00.56 somebody else who is at risk for that, then now you've got 00:26:00.56\00:26:03.70 tools to help that person get to the place that God wants 00:26:03.70\00:26:06.50 them to be, depression free and healthy and thriving in 00:26:06.50\00:26:10.20 the Lord. agents of change in the life of 00:26:16.60\00:26:19.30 other people. 00:26:19.30\00:26:20.16 Let's pray. 00:26:20.16\00:26:21.60 Our Father in heaven, I thank you that in your presence 00:26:21.60\00:26:25.06 there is fullness of joy. 00:26:25.06\00:26:27.60 But owing to a variety of factors there are many people 00:26:27.60\00:26:29.86 who are not there and depression is holding them 00:26:29.86\00:26:33.00 down. 00:26:33.00\00:26:34.20 Dear Lord, I pray that you would break those bonds and 00:26:34.20\00:26:37.73 set people free. 00:26:37.73\00:26:39.70 Free to find joy and hope and wholeness in Jesus. 00:26:39.70\00:26:44.83 We pray in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:26:44.83\00:26:47.10 NN: Amen. 00:26:47.10\00:26:52.76 Perhaps our program today has impressed you with a personal
