It has stood the test of time God's Book, 00:00:07.16\00:00:13.70 The bible Still relevant in today's 00:00:13.70\00:00:19.16 complex world It is written 00:00:19.16\00:00:25.00 Sharing hope around The Globe 00:00:25.00\00:00:36.63 ??? Music ??? One of the strangest characters 00:00:36.63\00:00:42.30 you're ever likely to hear about is the Englishman Jeremy 00:00:42.30\00:00:45.16 Bentham, who was born in 1748 and died in 1832. 00:00:45.16\00:00:52.90 Now just to give you an idea of how, well, different, Mr. 00:00:52.90\00:00:56.86 Bentham was, he willed that his body be stuffed and preserved in 00:00:56.86\00:01:02.83 his everyday clothing and then put on public display for 00:01:02.83\00:01:05.70 posterity. 00:01:05.70\00:01:08.10 And that's what happened! 00:01:08.10\00:01:09.30 You can see him, to this day, in a wooden cabinet at the 00:01:09.30\00:01:12.40 University College in London. 00:01:12.40\00:01:14.60 His head, however, is wax--and that's because in the preserving 00:01:14.60\00:01:18.10 process someone messed up, robbing his real face of most of 00:01:18.10\00:01:21.33 its expressions and leaving it too unattractive for viewing. 00:01:21.33\00:01:26.83 The wax head was therefore substituted for his real one, 00:01:26.83\00:01:30.36 and for years the real head, with two glass eyes he used to 00:01:30.36\00:01:34.60 carry around in his pockets, sat on the floor, between Bentham's 00:01:34.60\00:01:37.80 legs. 00:01:37.80\00:01:39.66 Well you've heard it said that nothing's sacred, and time and 00:01:39.66\00:01:42.20 again the college students would make off with Bentham's head. 00:01:42.20\00:01:45.80 One time, students stole the head and demanded a ransom of 00:01:45.80\00:01:48.86 100 pounds to be paid to some local homeless shelter. 00:01:48.86\00:01:52.06 The college agreed to pay 10 pounds and the head was 00:01:52.06\00:01:54.36 returned. 00:01:54.36\00:01:55.63 On another occasion, the head was again stolen by students, 00:01:55.63\00:01:58.80 was found in a locker at a train station in Scotland. 00:01:58.80\00:02:03.40 But the last straw came when it was discovered being used by 00:02:03.40\00:02:07.33 students for soccer practice! 00:02:07.33\00:02:09.86 After that, the head was safely secured and is no longer on 00:02:09.86\00:02:13.70 display. 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.20 The rest of Mr. Bentham, including his wax head included, 00:02:15.20\00:02:18.03 still is. 00:02:18.03\00:02:19.56 Now Bentham is most famous, though, not for his corpse but 00:02:19.56\00:02:22.43 for his social philosophy. 00:02:22.43\00:02:24.83 He was a leading advocate of utilitarianism: "the greatest 00:02:24.83\00:02:28.56 happiness of the greatest number." 00:02:28.56\00:02:31.26 The idea is this: You try to make laws so that they'll bring 00:02:31.26\00:02:34.73 the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of 00:02:34.73\00:02:38.00 people. 00:02:38.00\00:02:39.66 If law x make five million people a little happy, but law y 00:02:39.66\00:02:43.60 make 20 million people very happy, then the government 00:02:43.60\00:02:47.83 should make law y as opposed to law x. 00:02:47.83\00:02:53.23 Mr Bentham even created a mathematical scheme, a calculus, 00:02:53.23\00:02:57.50 that supposedly could determine happiness: and it would be great 00:02:57.50\00:03:01.16 to know what makes people happy, because you could then create 00:03:01.16\00:03:04.60 laws that will bring this happiness. 00:03:04.60\00:03:10.23 At 57-years-old, and still a bachelor, he wrote to a woman he 00:03:10.23\00:03:13.63 hadn't seen in sixteen years and he explained to her why - based 00:03:13.63\00:03:28.80 on the laws and rules that applied to them - they should be 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.73 married. 00:03:31.73\00:03:43.93 Well, surprise of surprises, she wasn't that impressed with his 00:03:43.93\00:03:47.40 laws and mathematics and she turned him down cold. 00:03:47.40\00:03:57.60 He waited 22 years and then gave it another shot, but wouldn't 00:03:57.60\00:04:01.23 you know? 00:04:01.23\00:04:02.40 She turned him down again. 00:04:02.40\00:04:04.33 You can imagine, can't you.... 00:04:04.33\00:04:06.63 Well, darling, I've worked out the numbers and the laws and the 00:04:06.63\00:04:08.80 figures, and it seems that, according to my mathematical 00:04:08.80\00:04:11.10 calculations, we should be in love and get married. 00:04:11.10\00:04:15.26 I'm glad I didn't propose to Melissa that way. 00:04:15.26\00:04:17.23 I reckon I'd still be single! 00:04:17.23\00:04:18.66 See, Bentham lived in a time when humanity truly believed in 00:04:18.66\00:04:21.96 the ability of logic, and law, and reason to answer all human 00:04:21.96\00:04:26.40 needs. 00:04:26.40\00:04:27.63 For many people, law and logic and reason were the sacred keys 00:04:27.63\00:04:31.06 to unlock all truth. 00:04:31.06\00:04:32.96 For many people believe reason and law, natural law, was all 00:04:32.96\00:04:36.86 that was needed. 00:04:36.86\00:04:39.00 Now all through the gospels in the Bible we have stories of 00:04:39.00\00:04:43.73 folks who were also sticklers for the law-at least the law as 00:04:43.73\00:04:47.53 they understood it. 00:04:47.53\00:04:49.23 One account in particular shows what I mean. 00:04:49.23\00:04:53.40 We are going to rewinding about 2000 years. 00:04:53.40\00:04:57.23 When you realize that it was only in the past 250 years that 00:04:57.23\00:05:01.30 doctors figured it would be a good idea to wash their hands 00:05:01.30\00:05:06.33 before surgery, you can only imagine what the medicine must 00:05:06.33\00:05:09.83 have been like in ancient Israel at the time of Jesus. 00:05:09.83\00:05:12.86 In this context we come to the story. 00:05:12.86\00:05:15.60 Jesus and His disciples are walking along and they came 00:05:15.60\00:05:18.70 across a man who had been blind from birth. 00:05:18.70\00:05:21.50 So what did Jesus do? 00:05:21.50\00:05:23.33 The Bible says this, and we read this in the gospels, Jesus 00:05:23.33\00:05:27.93 meeting a blind man. 00:05:27.93\00:05:30.33 What does the Word of God say? 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.56 "He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He 00:05:33.56\00:05:37.33 anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 00:05:37.33\00:05:42.23 And He said to him, 'Go, wash in the pool of Siloam' . 00:05:42.23\00:05:46.40 so he went and washed, and came back seeing" 00:05:46.40\00:05:50.80 John 9:6, 7 NKJV). 00:05:50.80\00:05:52.03 That's Incredible. 00:05:52.03\00:05:56.63 A man, blind from birth, is instantly healed. 00:05:56.63\00:06:05.10 As you can imagine, this caused quite the stir. 00:06:05.10\00:06:07.66 In fact, some people had a hard time believing that this was the 00:06:07.66\00:06:11.16 same man who used to sit around begging. 00:06:11.16\00:06:14.43 After all, how could someone, blind from birth, now suddenly 00:06:14.43\00:06:17.66 see? 00:06:17.66\00:06:19.00 Eventually, they brought him to the religious leaders, who had 00:06:19.00\00:06:22.16 to acknowledge the incredible miracle. 00:06:22.16\00:06:25.23 But there was one problem. 00:06:25.23\00:06:26.66 Jesus had performed this amazing miracle on the Sabbath day, and 00:06:26.66\00:06:30.43 according to their understanding of the law, you weren't supposed 00:06:30.43\00:06:34.46 to do any kind of on the Sabbath. 00:06:34.46\00:06:36.96 Thus they were arguing that Jesus couldn't have been from 00:06:36.96\00:06:41.16 God because He, at least in their thinking, had violated the 00:06:41.16\00:06:45.36 law. 00:06:45.36\00:06:47.46 "So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, 00:06:47.46\00:06:54.56 'Give God the glory! 00:06:54.56\00:06:56.60 We know that this Man is a sinner.'" 00:06:56.60\00:06:59.50 (John 9:24, NKJV) Can you imagine? 00:06:59.50\00:07:01.73 A man blind all his life is healed, instantly, and all that 00:07:01.73\00:07:05.10 the leaders can think about is the fact that it was done in 00:07:05.10\00:07:07.23 violation of a law, at least the law as they understood it. 00:07:07.23\00:07:11.03 Talk about taking the idea of law to an extreme! 00:07:11.03\00:07:14.83 Now don't get me wrong. 00:07:14.83\00:07:16.20 I am not talking against law. 00:07:16.20\00:07:17.33 On the contrary - I would uplift law, especially God's law. 00:07:17.33\00:07:23.10 Laws are supposed to be good things, but sometimes they can 00:07:23.10\00:07:26.93 be terrible, with disastrous effect. 00:07:26.93\00:07:30.26 I'll give you an example of that in just a moment. 00:07:30.26\00:07:49.43 It's time for today's Bible question, and here it is. 00:07:49.43\00:07:54.10 As a kid, I remember going to church about once or twice a 00:07:54.10\00:07:56.50 year with my parents. 00:07:56.50\00:07:58.50 I'm not really into religion, but I don't want to go to hell 00:07:58.50\00:08:02.36 when I die. 00:08:02.36\00:08:04.16 A friend of mine died in a car accident last month and I don't 00:08:04.16\00:08:07.23 know if he is in heaven or hell. 00:08:07.23\00:08:09.73 If I don't want to end up in hell, what do I need to do? 00:08:09.73\00:08:13.70 A serious question you're asking. 00:08:13.70\00:08:15.86 I tell you what, I don't want to go to hell either! 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.43 So what do we do to make sure we don't go there? 00:08:19.43\00:08:22.76 There's a great verse in the Bible. 00:08:22.76\00:08:25.13 It's in the book of first John, chapter 5 and verse 12. 00:08:25.13\00:08:27.70 It says, "He that has the Son has life, he who does not have 00:08:27.70\00:08:33.30 the Son of God do 00:08:33.30\00:08:36.56 Everlasting life is the gift God wants to give you. 00:08:36.56\00:08:39.60 And the way to receive everlasting life is to possess 00:08:39.60\00:08:42.60 Jesus - to have faith in Him. 00:08:42.60\00:08:43.80 Simply not going to hell isn't going to get a person too 00:08:43.80\00:08:48.80 terribly far, but faith in Jesus will take care of you in the 00:08:48.80\00:08:52.96 world to come, and will bless you in this life. 00:08:52.96\00:08:57.33 If you don't have a whole lot of background with the Bible or 00:08:57.33\00:09:00.16 with faith in God, let me recommend something to you. 00:09:00.16\00:09:03.06 Get a Bible, and start reading in say, the book of John or the 00:09:03.06\00:09:06.53 book of Matthew. 00:09:06.53\00:09:07.93 As you read, look for Jesus. 00:09:07.93\00:09:09.33 And when you come to Jesus, ask yourself, What is this person 00:09:09.33\00:09:13.56 Jesus like? 00:09:13.56\00:09:15.46 And when you get an idea of what Jesus is like, ask yourself, Is 00:09:15.46\00:09:19.40 this the kind of Person I'd like to know? 00:09:19.40\00:09:22.66 Do I want to have this person involved in my life? 00:09:22.66\00:09:26.56 And if your answer to that question is Yes, then tell God 00:09:26.56\00:09:30.06 that. 00:09:30.06\00:09:31.13 Tell him "God, I want Jesus, and I want You in my life." 00:09:31.13\00:09:35.73 And go from there. 00:09:35.73\00:09:37.10 Your focus is going to be on Jesus, and you won't be worrying 00:09:37.10\00:09:40.63 too much about going to hell. 00:09:40.63\00:09:42.80 To get your questions to us at It is Written, please go to or 00:09:42.80\00:09:45.30 website itiswritten.com, not often far from the case. 00:10:15.60\00:10:17.90 Here's a painfully familiar example of that. 00:10:17.90\00:10:20.83 At one time in many American states, slavery was legal. 00:10:20.83\00:10:24.83 America's own beloved Constitution made a legal 00:10:24.83\00:10:28.06 provision for it. 00:10:28.06\00:10:30.30 Even closer to our time, many people can remember the Jim Crow 00:10:30.30\00:10:33.80 Laws, the segregation laws in the American south. 00:10:33.80\00:10:39.50 Now let me read some of them to you. 00:10:39.50\00:10:41.63 Let me read you a few: "Nurses: 00:10:41.63\00:10:44.86 No person or corporation shall require any white 00:10:44.86\00:10:47.73 female nurse to nurse in wards or rooms in hospitals, either 00:10:47.73\00:10:52.80 public or private, in which negro men are placed. 00:10:52.80\00:11:01.60 Buses: All passenger stations in this state operated by any motor 00:11:01.60\00:11:07.06 transportation company shall have separate waiting rooms or 00:11:07.06\00:11:10.26 space and separate ticket windows for the white and 00:11:10.26\00:11:12.46 colored races. 00:11:12.46\00:11:18.63 Restaurants: It shall be unlawful to conduct a restaurant 00:11:18.63\00:11:22.20 or other place for the serving of food in the city, at which 00:11:22.20\00:11:25.80 white and colored people are served in the same room, unless 00:11:25.80\00:11:29.06 such white and colored persons are effectually separated by a 00:11:29.06\00:11:33.66 solid partition extending from the floor upward to a distance 00:11:33.66\00:11:38.70 of seven feet or higher, and unless a separate entrance from 00:11:38.70\00:11:42.03 the street is provided for each compartment. 00:11:42.03\00:11:52.16 These laws tell us about the character of the lawgiver, don't 00:11:52.16\00:11:55.36 they? 00:11:55.36\00:11:56.96 The laws reflect the attitude and thinking of the entity that 00:11:56.96\00:11:59.66 has created them, don't they? 00:11:59.66\00:12:01.76 And in these cases, the laws reveal a deep-seated racism and 00:12:01.76\00:12:06.00 bias. 00:12:06.00\00:12:07.76 The laws of a nation can tell us something about the character of 00:12:07.76\00:12:10.70 the law-making power of that nation. 00:12:10.70\00:12:13.83 Now think about this in relation to God's law. 00:12:13.83\00:12:17.10 Just as the laws of a land reveal something about the 00:12:17.10\00:12:19.93 law-makers of that land, God's law reveals something about Him 00:12:19.93\00:12:23.63 as well. 00:12:23.63\00:12:25.86 His law tells us what God is like. 00:12:25.86\00:12:29.76 His law, the Ten Commandments, are a reflection of His 00:12:29.76\00:12:33.36 character. 00:12:33.36\00:12:35.26 Think for a moment about the Ten Commandments and what they tell 00:12:35.26\00:12:37.73 us about God. 00:12:37.73\00:12:41.93 But before we begin, I'd like to dismiss right off the bat the 00:12:41.93\00:12:44.93 idea, sometimes expressed by well-meaning people, that God's 00:12:44.93\00:12:48.16 moral law has been abolished, that Jesus death on the cross 00:12:48.16\00:12:52.83 wiped out our obligation and our need to keep the Ten 00:12:52.83\00:12:55.53 Commandments. 00:12:55.53\00:12:57.16 Look at this text, however. 00:12:57.16\00:12:58.43 It's 1 John 3:4, the Bible says, "Whosoever committeth sin 00:12:58.43\00:13:06.13 transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the 00:13:06.13\00:13:12.40 law" (KJV 1 John 3:4). 00:13:12.40\00:13:15.33 Sin is the transgression of the law. 00:13:15.33\00:13:17.33 Now what law could that be? 00:13:17.33\00:13:18.33 Jim Crow law? 00:13:18.33\00:13:19.60 The law of the scribes and the Pharisees? 00:13:19.60\00:13:21.86 No, it is talking about God's law, the Ten Commandments. 00:13:21.86\00:13:24.90 How do I know? 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.16 Well, it's pretty easy, isn't it?. 00:13:26.16\00:13:28.73 If I steal, which is a violation of one of the Commandments, have 00:13:28.73\00:13:32.20 I sinned? 00:13:32.20\00:13:33.73 If I commit adultery, which is a violation of one of the Ten 00:13:33.73\00:13:37.43 Commandments, have I sinned then? 00:13:37.43\00:13:38.93 What about if I lie, if I lie. 00:13:38.93\00:13:40.00 have I sinned? 00:13:40.00\00:13:42.83 I think in all cases, we know pretty well that the answer is 00:13:42.83\00:13:47.80 yes. 00:13:47.80\00:13:49.80 Yes, if I do any of those things I have violated God's law and I 00:13:49.80\00:13:52.93 have sinned. 00:13:52.93\00:13:54.80 So, it's clear to me that sin is a violation of God's law. 00:13:54.80\00:13:59.50 The apostle James certainly thought so. 00:13:59.50\00:14:02.56 Read what he wrote in the Book of James. 00:14:02.56\00:14:06.03 "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in 00:14:06.03\00:14:10.16 one point, he is guilty of all. 00:14:10.16\00:14:12.66 For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not 00:14:12.66\00:14:16.70 murder." 00:14:16.70\00:14:17.96 Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you 00:14:17.96\00:14:21.96 have become a transgressor of the law." 00:14:21.96\00:14:26.20 (James 2:10,11, NKJV) That text 00:14:26.20\00:14:28.30 just doesn't make sense if the Ten Commandments had been 00:14:28.30\00:14:30.23 abolished, does it? 00:14:30.23\00:14:32.80 Now didn't Jesus say the two greatest commandments were love 00:14:32.80\00:14:36.36 to God and love to others? 00:14:36.36\00:14:38.40 Isn't that the essence of the law? 00:14:38.40\00:14:40.73 Yes, Jesus did say that; and yes, that is the essence of the 00:14:40.73\00:14:43.33 law; and yes, I'm glad you asked because it gets precisely to my 00:14:43.33\00:14:47.50 point, which is that God's law is an expression of His 00:14:47.50\00:14:51.46 character, and love is at the center of God's character, which 00:14:51.46\00:14:55.00 is why love-love for God, and love for others, forms the 00:14:55.00\00:14:59.80 foundation of God's law. 00:14:59.80\00:15:02.43 When asked about the greatest of the commandments, Jesus answered 00:15:02.43\00:15:06.93 this way in Matthew, Chapter 22. 00:15:06.93\00:15:11.80 Jesus said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, 00:15:11.80\00:15:17.03 and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 00:15:17.03\00:15:20.23 This is the first and great commandment. 00:15:20.23\00:15:24.60 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as 00:15:24.60\00:15:28.53 thyself" That's Matthew 22:37-39. 00:15:28.53\00:15:32.26 Notice - love God, love your neighbor. 00:15:32.26\00:15:35.73 Love is the foundation of God's law, and that's because God 00:15:35.73\00:15:40.03 Himself is love. 00:15:40.03\00:15:41.26 This doesn't negate the Ten Commandments; no, the Ten 00:15:41.26\00:15:44.23 Commandments are the way in which we show our love for God 00:15:44.23\00:15:47.66 and our love for our neighbor. 00:15:47.66\00:15:49.30 The first four commandments, no false gods, no idols, not taking 00:15:49.30\00:15:53.00 the Lord's name in vain, and keeping the Sabbath-these all 00:15:53.00\00:15:56.43 deal with a person's relationship with God. 00:15:56.43\00:15:59.56 Can you imagine someone saying that he loves Jesus, and yet 00:15:59.56\00:16:03.16 every time he mentions the name "Jesus," it's used as a curse? 00:16:03.16\00:16:06.90 Now that's not love. 00:16:06.90\00:16:08.63 And the last six commandments, about honoring your parents, 00:16:08.63\00:16:12.06 about not committing adultery, not stealing, not murdering, not 00:16:12.06\00:16:15.16 lying, not coveting-these all have to do with how we reveal 00:16:15.16\00:16:19.20 our love to others. 00:16:19.20\00:16:20.96 Can you imagine someone telling his neighbor, "Oh, yes, I love 00:16:20.96\00:16:23.30 you!" 00:16:23.30\00:16:24.23 and then stealing from him? 00:16:24.23\00:16:26.26 No, of course not. 00:16:26.26\00:16:28.26 God's moral law was given to us as a means of guiding us in how 00:16:28.26\00:16:30.76 we live, in how we can express love to Him and to others. 00:16:30.76\00:16:35.40 You don't usually think of the law and love together, but don't 00:16:35.40\00:16:38.86 tell that to apostle John. 00:16:38.86\00:16:41.16 Here's what John wrote: "By this we know that we love the 00:16:41.16\00:16:45.20 children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 00:16:45.20\00:16:50.13 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: 00:16:50.13\00:16:54.50 and his commandments are not grievous" (1 John 5:2,3:KJV). 00:16:54.50\00:16:58.26 Anyone can say that they love God, but according to John, by 00:16:58.26\00:17:04.86 keeping His commandments we reveal the reality of that love. 00:17:04.86\00:17:09.50 Here's what John said again. 00:17:09.50\00:17:12.93 This is from 2nd John: "And this is love, that we walk after his 00:17:12.93\00:17:19.03 commandments" (2 John 6, KJV). 00:17:19.03\00:17:21.80 Again, love is manifested by obedience to the commandments. 00:17:21.80\00:17:24.70 Here's Jesus Himself: John 14:14, he said, "If you love me, 00:17:24.70\00:17:29.93 keep my commandments" (John 14:15NKJV). 00:17:29.93\00:17:33.83 How much simpler could it be? 00:17:33.83\00:17:35.93 I've heard people say, "Well, the Ten Commandments don't 00:17:35.93\00:17:38.36 matter. 00:17:38.36\00:17:39.96 What matters is that you love others." 00:17:39.96\00:17:41.83 Well, on the surface that sounds nice but if you think about it, 00:17:41.83\00:17:44.96 it makes about as much sense as saying, "Murdering you neighbor 00:17:44.96\00:17:48.00 doesn't matter, just as long as you love him." 00:17:48.00\00:17:50.86 Just as you give your children rules to follow because you love 00:17:50.86\00:17:53.06 them and want what's best for them, God does the same for us, 00:17:53.06\00:17:55.96 and those basic rules are found in the law of God. 00:17:55.96\00:18:00.36 It's that simple. 00:18:00.36\00:18:01.66 In just a moment, The United States, just moments away 00:18:01.66\00:18:06.26 from a military crisis, In Matthew 4:4 the Word of God 00:18:06.26\00:18:12.66 says "It is written 'Man shall not live by bread alone but by 00:18:12.66\00:18:16.50 every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God'." 00:18:16.50\00:18:20.30 Every Word is a one minute Bible-based daily devotional 00:18:20.30\00:18:23.50 presented by Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially 00:18:23.50\00:18:27.13 for busy important to God. 00:18:50.56\00:18:53.03 In Proverbs 16:8 we read, "Better is little with 00:18:53.03\00:18:56.23 righteousness than great revenues without right." 00:18:56.23\00:19:00.33 The devil tempts people to cheat, cut corners, to rip other 00:19:00.33\00:19:03.00 people off, just to get a little MORE. 00:19:03.00\00:19:06.63 A friend of mine was featured in an article in an international 00:19:06.63\00:19:09.56 magazine for the simple fact that he was an honest mechanic. 00:19:09.56\00:19:13.50 When one shop wanted to charge the writer hundreds of dollars 00:19:13.50\00:19:16.40 for a job, my friend told him he could do it for 25. 00:19:16.40\00:19:19.70 Now, he could have charged more, but his integrity meant 00:19:19.70\00:19:22.53 something to him. 00:19:22.53\00:19:24.20 I once pointed out to a cashier that she hadn't charged me for 00:19:24.20\00:19:26.70 something. 00:19:26.70\00:19:27.66 She said, "Oh, I'd have never known." 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.56 And I said to her, "Yes, but I'd have known." 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.90 Its better to have less and retain your honour, than to 00:19:32.90\00:19:35.63 reach for more... 00:19:35.63\00:19:37.50 and lose your integrity. 00:19:37.50\00:19:40.20 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 00:19:40.20\00:19:42.46 Let's live today by Every Word. 00:19:42.46\00:19:45.13 Perhaps something in today's program has sparked your 00:19:45.13\00:19:47.46 interest in greater Bible study. 00:19:47.46\00:19:49.23 We invite you to visit our website itiswritten.com where 00:19:49.23\00:19:53.06 you will find a host of inspirational seminars that you can view on-line or download. 00:20:02.13\00:20:05.43 Discover more at itiswritten.com You know, for decades the United 00:20:05.43\00:20:11.96 States government kept under wraps a secret: at the same time 00:20:11.96\00:20:16.33 that the United States and the former Soviet Union almost went 00:20:16.33\00:20:19.80 to war over the Cuban Missile Crisis, an America U2 spy plane 00:20:19.80\00:20:23.50 accidentally blundered into Soviet airspace, bringing the 00:20:23.50\00:20:27.23 world dangerously close to nuclear war. 00:20:27.23\00:20:31.23 On the night of Oct 27, 1962, a very seasoned American pilot 00:20:31.23\00:20:35.76 named Captain Charles Maultsby was flying on a secret mission 00:20:35.76\00:20:39.86 to the North Pole, where he was to collect radioactive samples 00:20:39.86\00:20:44.46 from Soviet Nuclear tests. 00:20:44.46\00:20:46.63 On his long, seven hour flight, Maultsby was going to rely on 00:20:46.63\00:20:50.26 ancient navigation technique-he would follow the stars, because 00:20:50.26\00:20:54.86 at 70,000 feet in the air, he didn't need to worry about 00:20:54.86\00:20:57.40 clouds. 00:20:57.40\00:20:59.56 After a few hours, though, the sky suddenly filled with 00:20:59.56\00:21:03.00 beautiful bright lights. 00:21:03.00\00:21:05.40 It was the aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, and the air 00:21:05.40\00:21:08.16 outside his cockpit exploded with awesome flashes of orange 00:21:08.16\00:21:12.40 and violet and crimson colors. 00:21:12.40\00:21:15.26 He might have enjoyed the show except for one problem: those 00:21:15.26\00:21:19.43 lights blocked his view of the stars and by the time the light 00:21:19.43\00:21:22.80 show was over, Maultsby knew that something was wrong. 00:21:22.80\00:21:27.23 He wasn't where he should have been. 00:21:27.23\00:21:29.93 What he didn't realize, at least at first, was that he had veered 00:21:29.93\00:21:32.53 into Soviet air space. 00:21:32.53\00:21:34.63 He was more than a thousand miles of course. 00:21:34.63\00:21:38.43 Now, under any circumstances, this would have been dangerous 00:21:38.43\00:21:41.00 enough, but with the Russians and the Americans already in 00:21:41.00\00:21:44.23 each other's hair over over events in Cuba, the situation 00:21:44.23\00:21:48.33 was on a knife edge. 00:21:48.33\00:21:50.36 The Russians had already sent fighters in the air, to try and 00:21:50.36\00:21:53.86 intercept the plane, because for all they knew, this was a bomber 00:21:53.86\00:21:57.53 coming down to attack them Fortunately, in just the nick of 00:21:57.53\00:22:02.23 time, Maultsby was able to get the plane back safely, and the 00:22:02.23\00:22:05.86 tensions settled down, though later the Soviets warned the 00:22:05.86\00:22:10.20 United States that something like this could have pushed them 00:22:10.20\00:22:12.80 over the edge. 00:22:12.80\00:22:15.20 Charles Maultsby needed something to guide him, and that 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.30 was the stars, and when he lost site of his guide, he veered off 00:22:18.30\00:22:22.80 track. 00:22:22.80\00:22:24.86 It's the same with God's law. 00:22:24.86\00:22:26.40 It's a guide for us; it sets parameters for us; it tells us, 00:22:26.40\00:22:31.10 not to veer this way or that way, because if you get too far 00:22:31.10\00:22:35.20 off course, bad consequences can occur. 00:22:35.20\00:22:39.70 And that's what the law is there for. 00:22:39.70\00:22:42.80 It's not there to save us. 00:22:42.80\00:22:43.60 Keep in mind: trying to be saved by the law is like staring in a 00:22:43.60\00:22:47.40 mirror hoping that the mirror will remove your wrinkles. 00:22:47.40\00:22:51.20 God's law was never meant to bring salvation. 00:22:51.20\00:22:54.80 If we could be saved by keeping the law, Jesus wouldn't have 00:22:54.80\00:22:57.90 come and died for us. 00:22:57.90\00:22:59.70 How it works is if you, like me, have compared your life to 00:22:59.70\00:23:03.36 God's law, you have seen just how short you have fallen. 00:23:03.36\00:23:08.36 Before God's law, we all stand condemned. 00:23:08.36\00:23:11.86 The law is what shows that we are sinners! 00:23:11.86\00:23:15.50 The good news is Jesus. 00:23:15.50\00:23:16.96 He died because we have not kept God's law. 00:23:16.96\00:23:21.26 He paid the penalty for our transgression of the law. 00:23:21.26\00:23:25.66 And by faith in Him, we are forgiven that transgression and 00:23:25.66\00:23:29.56 we can stand perfect before God and under no condemnation for 00:23:29.56\00:23:33.66 our violation of the law. 00:23:33.66\00:23:37.16 Yes, God's law still is in effect. 00:23:37.16\00:23:39.36 It shows us our sin, and that leads us to Jesus, who will 00:23:39.36\00:23:43.53 forgive us for our sin, when we give ourselves to Him and claim 00:23:43.53\00:23:49.26 that forgiveness for ourselves. 00:23:49.26\00:23:50.96 Have you done that? 00:23:50.96\00:23:52.30 Have you given yourself to Jesus? 00:23:52.30\00:23:54.76 And have you claimed his forgiveness for you? 00:23:54.76\00:23:57.06 To not do that leaves you under the condemnation that comes from 00:23:57.06\00:24:01.63 having broken God's law, something we've all done. 00:24:01.63\00:24:05.43 But today you can say, Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. 00:24:05.43\00:24:09.46 I know therefore, that I am condemned because of my sin, but 00:24:09.46\00:24:13.36 I don't want to be condemned. 00:24:13.36\00:24:15.53 Jesus died for me. 00:24:15.53\00:24:17.93 I want to accept that. 00:24:17.93\00:24:19.30 I want to get out from under the death sentence of having 00:24:19.30\00:24:22.93 committed sins and having broken God's law. 00:24:22.93\00:24:25.33 I want to be free. 00:24:25.33\00:24:26.63 I want to be clean. 00:24:26.63\00:24:27.96 I want to be forgiven. 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.43 Are you ready to say that to Jesus today? 00:24:29.43\00:24:31.80 Let's say that together. 00:24:31.80\00:24:33.13 Pray with me. 00:24:33.13\00:24:34.23 Our father in heaven, we thank you today 00:24:34.23\00:24:37.80 for your goodness to us. 00:24:37.80\00:24:39.26 I know there are times, perhaps, that some of us might feel as 00:24:39.26\00:24:43.90 though your will, your way, your law is restrictive. 00:24:43.90\00:24:48.53 But what we know by reading the Bible is that in truth what you 00:24:48.53\00:24:51.90 are wanting to do is to keep us from back harm, to keep us back 00:24:51.90\00:24:55.33 from sin and to keep us close to you and safe under the shadow of 00:24:55.33\00:24:59.33 your wings. 00:24:59.33\00:25:00.96 So please, forgive us for our sins and thank you that through 00:25:00.96\00:25:06.43 Jesus, through accepting him Lord, live in our lives, through 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.60 accepting Jesus we can have not the penalty that comes from 00:25:09.60\00:25:15.50 having sinned but forgiveness and grace and cleanness and 00:25:15.50\00:25:23.10 purity. 00:25:23.10\00:25:24.96 Today we thank you for the gift of eternal life in Jesus and we 00:25:24.96\00:25:28.60 pray grateful in Jesus' name, amen. 00:25:28.60\00:25:53.60 Perhaps our program today has touched your heart and
