If the lake of fire is the second death, 00:00:01.66\00:00:05.17 how can it burn forever? 00:00:05.83\00:00:08.14 The subject of hell fire has been one that has had a 00:00:32.33\00:00:36.03 great deal of controversy. 00:00:36.06\00:00:38.03 People say, "How is it that a God of love 00:00:38.60\00:00:43.34 could burn people for a little tiny life here 00:00:43.94\00:00:48.08 forever and ever and ever, into eternity with no end? 00:00:48.34\00:00:54.68 How could that be? 00:00:54.98\00:00:56.32 It doesn't match this God of love we talk about. 00:00:56.35\00:01:00.19 How could Jesus do something like that? 00:01:00.22\00:01:04.39 It doesn't add up." 00:01:04.56\00:01:07.06 Well, let's go to the Scripture today and see 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.47 if it really says that. 00:01:10.50\00:01:12.77 So if you have your Bibles, if you're nearby and you have one, 00:01:13.10\00:01:17.31 maybe on your phone or something, 00:01:17.34\00:01:18.94 I invite you to turn with me to Hebrews 12. 00:01:19.27\00:01:23.01 Now we're going to go back to the book of Revelation, 00:01:23.91\00:01:25.61 of course, in just a little bit because there's where 00:01:25.65\00:01:29.12 some of the language gets people very interested and confused. 00:01:29.15\00:01:34.22 And you can see why when you ready it sometimes. 00:01:34.26\00:01:36.96 So I want to go to Hebrews 12, 00:01:37.59\00:01:40.63 and we're looking at verses 28 and 29. 00:01:40.73\00:01:44.27 Now the apostle Paul is speaking here, and he's saying, 00:01:44.83\00:01:47.77 "For consider Him who endured such hostility 00:01:48.20\00:01:51.74 from sinners against Himself..." 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.71 So there's no question that Jesus has endured 00:01:53.74\00:01:56.34 a lot of hostility. 00:01:56.38\00:01:58.05 In fact, sin has caused a lot of hostility among human beings, 00:01:58.25\00:02:01.72 and trouble and sorrow and heartache. 00:02:01.75\00:02:03.79 "Therefore," he goes on to say, "since we are receiving 00:02:04.25\00:02:08.39 a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, 00:02:08.42\00:02:13.19 by which we may serve God acceptably 00:02:13.73\00:02:17.00 with reverence and godly fear." 00:02:17.10\00:02:20.44 Now the next thing I want you to notice about this, 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.61 first of all he's saying that Jesus 00:02:24.17\00:02:25.54 has received a lot of the hostility. 00:02:25.57\00:02:27.44 I suppose, if anybody deserves eternal punishment, 00:02:27.88\00:02:31.95 and we'll talk about that eternal business in a moment, 00:02:31.98\00:02:34.82 would be those who really created great problems for Jesus 00:02:35.18\00:02:38.45 who is so kind and so good. 00:02:38.49\00:02:40.12 I mean, you think about the crucifixion, 00:02:40.22\00:02:42.02 you think about Caiaphas and Annas and the Sanhedrin. 00:02:42.06\00:02:47.10 Think about all the mocking, and you think about all He 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.90 went through at the hand of sinners. 00:02:49.93\00:02:52.70 I mean, He could have some serious concerns 00:02:53.44\00:02:57.24 about the way He was treated. 00:02:57.27\00:02:58.61 If you want to put it that way. 00:02:58.64\00:02:59.97 But let's listen to this. 00:03:00.01\00:03:01.34 It says we should serve God with reverence and godly fear. 00:03:01.38\00:03:03.81 Godly fear. 00:03:03.91\00:03:05.25 Fear of a fire that burns forever? 00:03:05.28\00:03:09.12 No, no. Listen to what he says. 00:03:09.15\00:03:11.05 "...with reverence and godly fear. 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.32 For our God," says the apostle Paul, "is a consuming fire." 00:03:14.36\00:03:21.13 What does the word, "consume," mean? 00:03:21.43\00:03:25.90 Well, if you consume a nice Mexican meal, for instance, 00:03:26.17\00:03:32.07 at some nice restaurant, or Italian restaurant, 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.41 or something, what's left when you get done consuming it? 00:03:35.44\00:03:40.18 It's gone. 00:03:41.95\00:03:43.28 There's an old saying that says, 00:03:43.32\00:03:44.65 "You can't have you cake and eat it too." 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.02 You can't consume the cake and still have the cake. 00:03:46.39\00:03:51.59 God is a consuming fire. 00:03:52.49\00:03:55.66 So in other words, it burns things up. 00:03:56.53\00:04:00.14 He destroys things. Puts an end to things. 00:04:00.24\00:04:04.04 The apostle Paul borrows that expression, "a consuming fire," 00:04:04.94\00:04:08.98 "Our God is a consuming fire," he borrows that from Moses. 00:04:09.01\00:04:12.78 And he gets it from Deuteronomy 9:2-3 00:04:12.81\00:04:17.12 where the apostle, not the apostle Paul, but Moses says, 00:04:17.45\00:04:21.12 "...of whom you have heard it said," talking about God, 00:04:21.16\00:04:26.09 'Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?' 00:04:26.33\00:04:30.37 Therefore understand today that the LORD your God 00:04:31.57\00:04:36.30 is He who goes over before you..." 00:04:36.34\00:04:39.44 Now these were the giants, Anak, and he was saying, 00:04:39.74\00:04:42.78 "Your God is going to go before you." 00:04:42.81\00:04:45.65 He's going to fight against these people 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.78 as they were entering Israel. 00:04:49.32\00:04:50.69 Notice what he says, "He who goes over before you 00:04:50.72\00:04:54.62 as a consuming fire. 00:04:54.66\00:04:58.23 He will destroy them and bring them down before you." 00:04:58.33\00:05:03.90 So when God destroyed the enemies of Israel, 00:05:04.30\00:05:08.17 He destroyed them as a consuming fire. 00:05:08.20\00:05:11.17 And they weren't still living when He was done 00:05:11.51\00:05:14.38 with the consuming fire part. 00:05:14.51\00:05:17.01 So our God is a consuming fire. 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.85 Now that word again, "consuming," in the Greek 00:05:20.78\00:05:24.22 means to utterly destroy. 00:05:24.25\00:05:27.89 Utterly. 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.26 Were the giants that stood up against Israel, 00:05:29.29\00:05:31.19 were they utterly destroyed? 00:05:31.23\00:05:32.99 Of course they were. 00:05:33.03\00:05:34.36 How about their other enemies? 00:05:34.40\00:05:35.73 The Canaanites, were they utterly destroyed? 00:05:35.76\00:05:37.73 What about the people in Jericho? 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.80 Were they utterly destroyed? Of course they were? 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.40 Well at the end of the 1000 years we're brought face to face 00:05:43.04\00:05:46.41 with a great white throne judgment. 00:05:46.44\00:05:49.94 Now the last time, of course, we talked about the 1000 years. 00:05:50.75\00:05:53.68 And I'm going to review that a little bit 00:05:53.72\00:05:56.08 here so that we still have the setting, 00:05:56.35\00:05:59.35 because context is always important. 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.42 You've got to look at that context. 00:06:02.46\00:06:04.39 It's crucial. 00:06:04.43\00:06:05.76 So we want to look at that context again. 00:06:06.16\00:06:08.66 So I'm going to review that 1000 years. 00:06:08.70\00:06:11.27 Well that 1000 years, sometimes called the millennium, 00:06:11.30\00:06:13.80 which simply means 1000 years, that 1000 years starts 00:06:13.84\00:06:18.61 when Jesus comes back in glory. 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.54 Now the judgment that's going on in heaven right now 00:06:21.94\00:06:25.25 decides between the wheat and the tares. 00:06:25.28\00:06:27.88 But this white throne judgment judges the wicked 00:06:27.92\00:06:32.42 and gives them their sentence. 00:06:32.45\00:06:34.42 And that's what the judgment in heaven is about 00:06:34.52\00:06:37.16 during the 1000 years, is the righteous are the jury. 00:06:37.19\00:06:41.60 So this coming of the Lord Jesus starts this beginning. 00:06:42.13\00:06:46.90 And we have, of course, the saints, the resurrected saints 00:06:47.00\00:06:52.17 are resurrected, they're with Jesus in heaven. 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.78 And the righteous living are changed 00:06:54.88\00:06:57.15 and you get that new body. 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.05 Isn't that going to be a wonderful thing? 00:06:59.08\00:07:00.42 And we won't be old age. 00:07:00.45\00:07:01.82 Positive. That's going to be marvelous. 00:07:01.85\00:07:03.75 So we'll all be eternally young. 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.79 And all the righteous from all the ages 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.62 are going to be resurrected. 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.19 And the living righteous caught up with the Lord, 00:07:10.23\00:07:13.56 to the Lord to meet Him in the air. 00:07:13.66\00:07:15.36 The wicked who are alive on the earth, 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.90 the Bible says they're going to slain by the 00:07:17.93\00:07:19.70 brightness of His coming. 00:07:19.73\00:07:21.30 And of course, you've got that sober picture 00:07:21.34\00:07:24.11 in Revelation 19. 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.41 So during the 1000 years there is this judgment of the saints, 00:07:26.71\00:07:29.74 as I mentioned it earlier. 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.41 Deciding the severity of the punishment for the wicked. 00:07:31.45\00:07:34.42 And also getting all their questions answered 00:07:34.45\00:07:36.92 about God's justice. 00:07:36.95\00:07:38.29 They're going to have all the information when that's done. 00:07:38.32\00:07:40.86 Now at the end of the 1000 years, just doing this review, 00:07:40.89\00:07:44.29 at the end of the 1000 years, Revelation 20:7-8 says this, 00:07:45.09\00:07:49.66 "Now when the thousand years have expired, 00:07:50.00\00:07:52.90 Satan will be released from his prison 00:07:52.93\00:07:55.64 and will go out to deceive the nations 00:07:55.67\00:07:58.01 which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, 00:07:58.11\00:08:02.48 to gather them together to battle, 00:08:02.51\00:08:04.65 whose number is as the sand of the sea." 00:08:04.68\00:08:08.65 Now God and Magog was, I think, Ezekiel's code word 00:08:08.95\00:08:12.65 for Babylon. 00:08:12.85\00:08:14.59 And so the whole wicked dead that are resurrected 00:08:14.79\00:08:18.69 are kind of described as Babylon, 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.43 even though they come from all the ages. 00:08:21.70\00:08:24.63 And they're gathered now. 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.03 Now they're like the sand of the sea. 00:08:26.07\00:08:29.37 And the devil is back in business, if you please. 00:08:29.40\00:08:31.81 He's going to deceive them. 00:08:32.01\00:08:33.34 He's got somebody to deceive now. 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.64 Of course the question is, 00:08:35.84\00:08:37.45 what is he going to deceive them about? 00:08:37.48\00:08:39.55 Well first of all, they're coming from all over the earth. 00:08:39.58\00:08:42.15 And he has to deceive them into gathering together. 00:08:42.62\00:08:46.79 Now what are they going to gather together for? 00:08:46.82\00:08:49.12 Well, because the camp of the saints has come down. 00:08:49.36\00:08:53.13 The New Jerusalem has come down. 00:08:53.29\00:08:55.53 And it's there now on the earth. 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.23 Because the great white throne judgment, 00:08:58.27\00:09:00.64 everybody stand before God's great white throne; 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.91 the righteous and the wicked. 00:09:03.94\00:09:05.47 The nice thing about the righteous is 00:09:05.51\00:09:07.31 they've already been cleared. 00:09:07.61\00:09:09.04 They're covered with the blood of Christ. 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.15 So when the great white throne Judge looks at them, 00:09:11.25\00:09:14.68 all He sees is the Lord Jesus. 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.39 It's that wonderful? 00:09:17.42\00:09:18.75 He sees that beautiful, powerful character, 00:09:18.79\00:09:21.56 that righteous character of the Lord Jesus. 00:09:21.76\00:09:24.79 But with the wicked who are not covered, 00:09:25.13\00:09:27.16 that's another story. 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.30 So at the end of this 1000 years, 00:09:29.53\00:09:31.43 Satan is released from his prison because 00:09:31.53\00:09:33.70 the wicked dead now are resurrected. 00:09:33.74\00:09:37.31 And as soon as he's got a crowd, he starts deceiving. 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.24 And he gathers them from all over the earth. 00:09:40.28\00:09:42.68 Now the Bible says in Revelation 20:9, 00:09:42.94\00:09:46.61 "And they went up on the breadth of the earth 00:09:47.02\00:09:49.75 and surrounded the camp of the saints, the beloved city." 00:09:49.78\00:09:55.19 The beloved city. The camp of the saints. 00:09:55.39\00:09:58.06 That's the New Jerusalem. 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.89 And John says in chapter 21 verse 2, 00:10:00.20\00:10:03.63 "I, John, saw the holy city, the New Jerusalem..." 00:10:03.67\00:10:08.40 Not old Babylon. Hallelujah. 00:10:08.87\00:10:11.51 The New Jerusalem. 00:10:11.54\00:10:13.01 Let me tell you this. 00:10:13.04\00:10:14.38 That there's nothing in Babylon, with all of its cities 00:10:14.51\00:10:17.48 and its electricity, and all of its comforts, 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.38 there's nothing that compares to the New Jerusalem. 00:10:19.41\00:10:22.35 We're going to talk about that in another session. 00:10:22.38\00:10:24.69 "I saw the New Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven, 00:10:24.89\00:10:28.79 prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.59 Now question and answer, where is now the New Jerusalem? 00:10:32.63\00:10:36.63 The New Jerusalem is on the earth. 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.87 Don't lose that. 00:10:39.07\00:10:40.77 The New Jerusalem is on the earth. 00:10:40.87\00:10:44.64 Keep that in mind. 00:10:46.04\00:10:47.41 So it comes down from heaven, and now it's sitting here. 00:10:47.64\00:10:51.58 And the wicked dead have been resurrected. 00:10:52.05\00:10:54.15 Satan has deceived them, that they can take the city. 00:10:54.18\00:10:58.55 Now obviously he would like to have the New Jerusalem. 00:10:59.05\00:11:01.79 Now he doesn't want the unselfish people who are 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.86 full of God's unselfish love who are in the city 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.60 and protected by its walls and its mighty gates. 00:11:07.63\00:11:11.17 He doesn't want them, but he wants the city. 00:11:11.20\00:11:14.67 So they're not going to blow this up with an atom bomb. 00:11:15.44\00:11:18.37 No, they want to take the city, they want to kill all the 00:11:19.67\00:11:23.11 righteous, and live in it themselves. 00:11:23.14\00:11:26.01 And Satan convinces them that he's their leader 00:11:26.05\00:11:30.19 and that he can lead them into it. 00:11:30.22\00:11:31.62 Now I don't know what kind of deception he uses, 00:11:31.65\00:11:33.99 but he uses some kind of fancy footwork, I suppose. 00:11:34.36\00:11:38.36 He's cunning. And they buy into it. 00:11:38.39\00:11:41.43 Well, they've been buying into Satan's lies all their life. 00:11:41.46\00:11:45.27 And they buy into it. 00:11:45.30\00:11:46.87 But let's go on with the story. 00:11:47.87\00:11:50.77 Revelation 20:9-10, and let's see what happens. 00:11:51.27\00:11:55.48 And the Bible says, "And fire came down from God 00:11:55.94\00:11:59.51 out of heaven and devoured them." 00:11:59.61\00:12:03.15 What? 00:12:04.45\00:12:05.79 Devoured them. 00:12:06.55\00:12:08.09 "Devoured," means to consume. 00:12:08.82\00:12:11.69 It goes back to that part that our God is a consuming fire. 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.30 Just like He destroyed the enemies of ancient Israel. 00:12:15.33\00:12:19.00 The consuming fire. 00:12:19.50\00:12:21.50 He devoured them. 00:12:21.54\00:12:23.20 They're over, they're finished, as it were. 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.74 He goes on to say, "And the devil who deceived them 00:12:27.08\00:12:31.05 was cast into the lake of fire 00:12:31.08\00:12:33.75 where the beast and the false prophet are." 00:12:33.78\00:12:36.25 The lake of fire is actually right there on the earth. 00:12:36.28\00:12:40.32 It's right there. 00:12:40.72\00:12:42.06 "And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." 00:12:43.16\00:12:48.16 Now that's the little phrase, and there's about three of 00:12:48.20\00:12:51.27 those phrases in the Scripture, particularly in the book 00:12:51.30\00:12:53.70 of Revelation, that describe this fire. 00:12:53.74\00:12:58.34 They'll be tormented day and night, 00:12:58.37\00:12:59.77 and their smoke goes up forever and ever. 00:12:59.81\00:13:03.04 So it sounds contradictory. 00:13:03.08\00:13:05.71 It sounds contradictory. 00:13:05.98\00:13:07.32 But let's finish the story before we get into that. 00:13:07.35\00:13:09.68 The next few verses give us a picture 00:13:09.72\00:13:12.52 of the final judgment. 00:13:12.55\00:13:14.19 Revelation 20:11-15 00:13:14.76\00:13:17.96 "Then I saw the great white throne and Him who sat on it, 00:13:17.99\00:13:22.10 from whose face heaven and earth fled away. 00:13:22.13\00:13:26.13 And there was no place found for them." 00:13:26.17\00:13:29.34 In other words, God didn't have any place 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.51 in His universe for the resurrected wicked. 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.88 They're now going to be judged. 00:13:34.91\00:13:36.95 There's not going to be any place for them. 00:13:36.98\00:13:39.95 Don't forget that as we go into that. 00:13:40.28\00:13:43.08 "And the books were opened." 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.85 And God has a record of absolutely everything. 00:13:46.05\00:13:51.23
