Have you ever noticed that we live in a world that's afraid? 00:00:01.36\00:00:04.53 Everywhere you go, people are fearful? 00:00:04.63\00:00:07.30 And you know, it was Jesus who said, "Don't be afraid." 00:00:07.64\00:00:11.04 Why? 00:00:11.07\00:00:12.41 Because He's the Alpha and the Omega. 00:00:12.44\00:00:15.74 In the book of Revelation we're given this 00:00:38.47\00:00:40.24 stunning picture of Jesus. 00:00:40.27\00:00:41.80 In fact, the title of the book itself is, 00:00:41.84\00:00:44.31 A Revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:00:44.34\00:00:46.98 He reveals Himself in a way that we have never seen Him 00:00:47.01\00:00:51.25 in the gospels, except perhaps at the Mount of Transfiguration. 00:00:51.28\00:00:55.28 In the book of Revelation we see Him as this glorious 00:00:55.52\00:00:58.49 being sitting, standing if you please, 00:00:58.52\00:01:02.19 at the right hand of God. 00:01:02.29\00:01:03.83 So we want to take a look at Jesus today as the 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.76 Alpha and the Omega, and we want to take a look at 00:01:06.80\00:01:10.53 some of His own statements about Himself. 00:01:10.57\00:01:13.30 So we're going to the book of Revelation chapter 1, 00:01:13.34\00:01:16.57 and we're going to look at verses 8 and 11. 00:01:16.60\00:01:21.91 This is Jesus speaking, "I am the Alpha and the Omega..." 00:01:23.31\00:01:28.48 What does that mean? 00:01:28.52\00:01:29.85 It's like saying, "I am the A and the Z. 00:01:29.88\00:01:33.36 I include the entire alphabet. 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.79 I'm the total sum of the alphabet." 00:01:37.13\00:01:40.63 And Jesus is the total sum. 00:01:40.90\00:01:43.06 Alpha and omega were the Greek A and Z, if you please. 00:01:43.57\00:01:46.70 They weren't the actual Z, omega is a different letter. 00:01:46.74\00:01:49.54 But when Jesus says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega," 00:01:50.21\00:01:53.58 He wants to instill in us assurance. 00:01:53.61\00:01:56.98 He wants us not to be afraid. 00:01:57.21\00:01:59.55 Fear is the enemy of faith. 00:02:00.02\00:02:03.02 And yet, everywhere we turn it seems like 00:02:03.35\00:02:05.62 fear drives the world. 00:02:05.65\00:02:08.49 Fear drives the stock market. 00:02:09.02\00:02:11.96 It drives people's choices, it drives what people do. 00:02:12.19\00:02:15.83 Many times all day long. 00:02:15.86\00:02:17.57 Fear. 00:02:17.60\00:02:18.93 I'm looking forward to a world where there is no more fear. 00:02:18.97\00:02:22.34 Won't you be glad for that world? 00:02:22.37\00:02:23.81 But let's go on to what Jesus has to say, 00:02:23.84\00:02:25.81 the Alpha and the Omega here, the Beginning and the End. 00:02:26.11\00:02:30.68 Let's listen to what He says. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.05 He says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, 00:02:32.31\00:02:35.52 the Beginning and the End..." 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.42 "I've got it all covered, everything in between. 00:02:37.45\00:02:40.56 Your whole life I've got covered. 00:02:40.59\00:02:42.92 The start of your life to the finish of your life. 00:02:42.96\00:02:45.76 I've got the whole world covered, 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.66 from the start of Genesis to the close of Revelation. 00:02:47.70\00:02:51.13 I am the Beginning and the End," He says. 00:02:51.17\00:02:55.00 And then He goes on in verse 8 and He says, 00:02:55.14\00:02:57.91 "...who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." 00:02:58.41\00:03:06.31 Now that's quite a marvelous statement. 00:03:06.35\00:03:08.65 You know, there's some people today that 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.15 try to make Jesus as kind of a secondary God, 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.56 or something like that. 00:03:13.59\00:03:14.92 But here He declares that He is the Almighty. 00:03:15.49\00:03:19.59 He is the Creator of the universe. 00:03:20.00\00:03:22.83 And that's a big thing through the book of Revelation. 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.50 So He and the Father both are Almighty. 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.50 The Holy Spirit is Almighty. 00:03:28.54\00:03:30.34 But Jesus claims as the Alpha and the Omega. 00:03:30.44\00:03:33.94 He says, "I am the Almighty." 00:03:33.98\00:03:37.18 And He claims once again to be the Alpha and the Omega. 00:03:37.21\00:03:41.48 When you get to the end of the book of Revelation 00:03:41.52\00:03:43.59 He says again that He's the Alpha and the Omega, 00:03:44.09\00:03:47.92 the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. 00:03:48.19\00:03:51.66 So in other words, Jesus is the sum of everything. 00:03:51.86\00:03:55.40 Now Paul puts it this way. 00:03:55.43\00:03:57.13 Some people have misunderstood it. 00:03:57.23\00:03:58.90 Paul says Jesus is the end of the law. 00:03:59.13\00:04:02.27 But really the word, "end," there means the goal of the law. 00:04:02.30\00:04:05.71 He's the summation of the law. 00:04:05.74\00:04:07.78 And that's what Jesus is saying here. 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.71 "I'm the summation of the universe." 00:04:09.74\00:04:11.25 And He can say that because He created it. 00:04:11.28\00:04:14.88 He made it. 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.19 I mean, when you look at human beings and you look at the DNA 00:04:17.22\00:04:20.42 that makes us who we are, it is an amazing incredible thing. 00:04:20.46\00:04:23.59 Yet, Jesus made all of it. 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.20 He's the Beginning and the End. 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.50 Listen to the apostle Paul in the book of Colossians, 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.93 it's a very powerful statement. 00:04:31.97\00:04:33.67 One of my favorite chapters in the New Testament. 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.30 Colossians 1:15-18 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.14 He's talking about this incomparable Jesus. 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.98 He's saying there's nobody like Him. 00:04:42.21\00:04:43.85 Now just a few versus earlier than that 00:04:43.88\00:04:46.45 he tells people that he's praying that they will be 00:04:47.15\00:04:49.78 mighty Christians. 00:04:49.82\00:04:51.35 I mean, have you ever seen anybody be baptized 00:04:51.69\00:04:54.72 and get up and say, "Well, I'm baptized now. 00:04:54.76\00:04:58.06 I just want to be a weak Christian." 00:04:58.16\00:05:00.33 No. 00:05:00.36\00:05:01.70 People want to be strong Christians, 00:05:01.73\00:05:03.70 strengthened with the might of the Lord Jesus, 00:05:03.73\00:05:07.24 as the apostle Paul says. 00:05:07.27\00:05:08.74 What kind of might is that? 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.81 What kind of might is it? 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.51 Well the apostle Paul describes this might, this mighty Jesus, 00:05:12.84\00:05:16.81 this incomparable Jesus, 00:05:17.15\00:05:20.65 this matchless Jesus. 00:05:20.68\00:05:22.38 Paul says, "He is the image of the invisible God..." 00:05:22.78\00:05:27.42 What do we mean by the image of the invisible God? 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.09 You know, we have people come up and say, 00:05:30.13\00:05:31.56 "Oh, you know, why do you worship this invisible God? 00:05:31.59\00:05:34.46 Nobody has ever seen God." 00:05:34.50\00:05:35.83 No, no, no, that's not true. 00:05:35.86\00:05:37.20 The apostle Paul says, and the disciples also declare, 00:05:38.50\00:05:41.64 that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.81 The world has seen God. They've seen Him in the flesh. 00:05:46.01\00:05:49.74 This Jesus who walked Palestine's dusty trails, 00:05:49.78\00:05:54.08 this Jesus who was hung on Calvary's cross 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.62 and was resurrected, this Jesus who touched the eyes 00:05:56.65\00:05:59.65 of the blind and opened them, 00:05:59.69\00:06:02.09 this Jesus who spoke words of hope and courage, 00:06:02.19\00:06:05.39 this Jesus who took on Himself the burdens of the world, 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.03 this marvelous, incomparable Jesus, 00:06:09.23\00:06:13.07 He is God. 00:06:13.60\00:06:15.34 If you have seen Jesus, you have seen God. 00:06:15.54\00:06:20.08 And you see Him in the Scriptures. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.84 And we have the testimonies of the apostles and many others. 00:06:23.08\00:06:26.65 In fact, I think it's the apostle John who says, 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.88 "We touched Him." 00:06:29.92\00:06:31.85 He's not abstract. 00:06:33.25\00:06:35.42 It's true we cannot see God the Father, 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.09 but we have seen God the Son. 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.36 And so the apostle Paul goes on to say, 00:06:41.63\00:06:43.93 "He is the image of the invisible God, 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.14 the firstborn over all creation." 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.54 The firstborn of the dead. 00:06:49.57\00:06:51.24 He's resurrected, He's the preeminent one. 00:06:51.34\00:06:54.28 Without His resurrection, nobody's resurrection 00:06:54.38\00:06:58.15 is going to count. 00:06:58.18\00:06:59.51 Everybody's resurrection is not going to happen. 00:06:59.55\00:07:02.65 Or those that have been resurrected, the few that had, 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.05 they would probably have to go back to the grave. 00:07:05.32\00:07:07.49 But Jesus is the firstborn. 00:07:07.96\00:07:10.09 In His resurrection we all have the hope 00:07:10.13\00:07:14.26 of the resurrection. 00:07:14.30\00:07:15.66 Paul goes on to say, "For by Him all things were created..." 00:07:16.50\00:07:20.64 Well, if all things were created by Him, then He's not created. 00:07:20.67\00:07:24.27 He's the Creator. 00:07:25.24\00:07:26.71 Because all things were created by Him. 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.28 "...that were created in heaven," or the universe, 00:07:31.01\00:07:33.98 "and that are on earth, visible and invisible..." 00:07:34.62\00:07:38.29 There are many things that you cannot see. 00:07:38.32\00:07:40.62 I remember going home to my dad one time and saying, 00:07:40.92\00:07:44.29 "Dad, did you know that this desk," or wood, or whatever 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.93 we were looking at, I said, 00:07:47.96\00:07:49.73 "Dad, that's made out of atoms that move." 00:07:49.76\00:07:52.13 Now dad hadn't had the opportunity to study 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.34 a little bit of this that I had. 00:07:54.37\00:07:55.77 And he was a wonderful dad. 00:07:55.94\00:07:57.44 I'm blessed to have had two great wonderful parents. 00:07:57.47\00:08:01.54 But dad looked at me, and I said, "They're all moving, 00:08:02.34\00:08:04.91 dad, really fast around." 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.28 "Naw," he said, "that's not true." 00:08:06.31\00:08:08.55 Because dad couldn't see it. 00:08:09.68\00:08:11.95 It was invisible. 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.16 The apostle Paul, they didn't have microscopes 00:08:15.39\00:08:17.49 in that day either, but he said it under inspiration. 00:08:17.53\00:08:21.36 That Jesus is the invisible, that He made things 00:08:22.06\00:08:26.60 out of the invisible. 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.44 He made things out of the invisible that are now visible. 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.94 Let me go on. 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.38 In heaven and on earth, the universe, 00:08:35.04\00:08:37.61 and things we see on earth, "visible and invisible..." 00:08:37.65\00:08:40.72 So He made the atoms, He made the electrons, 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.89 He made the molecules. 00:08:43.99\00:08:45.65 He made everything that we see. 00:08:46.02\00:08:47.69 And then he goes on, "...whether thrones or dominions 00:08:49.09\00:08:51.79 or principalities or powers. 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.86 All things," it says it again, 00:08:53.96\00:08:56.16 "All things were created through Him and for Him." 00:08:56.26\00:09:00.64 You know, love doesn't like to be alone. 00:09:00.97\00:09:02.97 The reason Jesus created the universe is because 00:09:03.00\00:09:05.27 He loves to share. 00:09:05.31\00:09:06.78 You know, if you're an unselfish person 00:09:07.08\00:09:08.71 you take delight in sharing. 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.55 I mean, to give, the Bible teaches us, 00:09:10.65\00:09:13.65 is better than receiving. 00:09:13.88\00:09:15.58 To be able to share, to do something for somebody else 00:09:15.98\00:09:18.85 is better than being given something yourself. 00:09:18.89\00:09:21.96 And God is love. 00:09:22.72\00:09:24.29 That's why He made the universe. 00:09:24.49\00:09:25.83 And that's why He wants to share it. 00:09:25.86\00:09:27.76 That's why He's the Creator of all things. 00:09:28.16\00:09:30.03 He not only made it to share it, but because He really loves us 00:09:30.07\00:09:35.20 and He cares for us. 00:09:35.47\00:09:36.81 Well the apostle Paul goes on and says, 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.57 "And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." 00:09:39.57\00:09:43.71 These are powerful statements. 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.41 In other words, this is a statement we cannot grasp. 00:09:45.51\00:09:49.02 In fact, Solomon the great king said, "The world, the universe, 00:09:49.45\00:09:54.12 basically cannot contain You, cannot be contained, 00:09:54.16\00:09:58.49 cannot contain You because you're bigger than all of it." 00:09:59.23\00:10:02.36 Scientists today, when they talk about origins... 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.97 And we're going to talk, by the way, about evolution 00:10:06.00\00:10:08.10 one of these times. 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.47 They are mystified, "Where did all of this come from?" 00:10:09.70\00:10:14.28 It's because this God that we serve is bigger 00:10:14.31\00:10:18.31 than the entire creation, if you please. 00:10:18.35\00:10:20.95 He's greater than the creation. 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.42 He goes on to say, "And He is before all things, 00:10:23.62\00:10:27.06 and in Him all things consist. 00:10:27.09\00:10:28.89 He is the head of the body, the church..." 00:10:28.92\00:10:32.23 I want to ask a question. 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.30 Is the church important? 00:10:34.33\00:10:36.20 Of course the church is important. 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.13 I know people say, "Well yeah, but look at all of the..." 00:10:39.23\00:10:42.04 Yes, you can find poor human beings 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.34 who have made a mess of things. 00:10:44.37\00:10:45.94 You can find poor ministers like myself. 00:10:45.97\00:10:48.78 You can find other church leaders. 00:10:49.08\00:10:51.01 You can find people who have made lots 00:10:51.05\00:10:53.05 of problems and failures. 00:10:53.08\00:10:56.18 But Jesus still loves His church. 00:10:56.82\00:10:59.35 Because ultimately it's not man that's in charge of His church, 00:10:59.39\00:11:03.49 it's Jesus that's in charge of His church. 00:11:03.69\00:11:06.26 And then the apostle John in the book of Revelation, 00:11:06.96\00:11:10.47 he gives us this other, another view of Jesus 00:11:10.50\00:11:13.44 and continues this view in Revelation chapter 1. 00:11:13.47\00:11:16.54 It's very powerful. 00:11:16.77\00:11:18.11 It's the introduction to all of the book of Revelation. 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.08 And John says, "Then I turned to see 00:11:20.88\00:11:23.14 a voice that spoke to me." 00:11:23.18\00:11:24.91 Hears a voice speaking to him. 00:11:24.95\00:11:26.92 And he turned, as we would, to see who it is. 00:11:26.95\00:11:29.95 Who is this voice? 00:11:29.98\00:11:31.35 And he saw in the midst of the seven candlesticks... 00:11:31.39\00:11:35.42 Now I want to say that there is a heavenly sanctuary. 00:11:35.52\00:11:39.19 That's the real sanctuary. 00:11:39.23\00:11:41.03 We'll talk a little bit more about that as time goes along. 00:11:41.06\00:11:43.20 Because you can't talk about the revelation of Jesus 00:11:43.23\00:11:45.90 without actually seeing Him move through the heavenly sanctuary. 00:11:45.93\00:11:50.64 So Jesus is standing here in the midst of these candlesticks 00:11:50.67\00:11:54.28 and He's dressed as a priest, if you please. 00:11:54.31\00:11:57.75 And this is what John goes on to say. 00:11:57.78\00:12:00.55 "...One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment 00:12:01.38\00:12:03.79 down to His feet, girded about with a golden band." 00:12:03.82\00:12:06.92 He appears as a priest. 00:12:06.96\00:12:08.86 He is a priest. 00:12:08.96\00:12:10.29 He is the only real priest we have. 00:12:10.33\00:12:12.93 "His head and His hair were white like wool, 00:12:13.13\00:12:17.57 white as snow, His eyes were like a flame of fire, 00:12:18.50\00:12:22.84 His feet like fine brass, refined in a furnace... 00:12:22.87\00:12:27.81 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth 00:12:28.01\00:12:31.55 went a sharp sword, and His countenance was like the sun 00:12:31.75\00:12:36.25 shining in its strength." 00:12:36.28\00:12:37.62 Ever try to look at the sun at noonday? 00:12:37.65\00:12:39.49 That's like the face of Jesus, as it were. 00:12:39.52\00:12:41.79 "And when I saw Him," John says, 00:12:42.12\00:12:44.93 "when I saw this glorious picture," 00:12:44.96\00:12:47.23 he says, "I fell at His feet like I was dead." 00:12:47.86\00:12:52.90 In other words, all the strength had left John. 00:12:53.03\00:12:56.30 John just felt like He was dead. 00:12:56.91\00:12:59.41 He was still alive, but he had fallen before this 00:12:59.44\00:13:03.11 glorious Jesus, this wonderful Jesus. 00:13:03.14\00:13:06.78 He had fallen before Him. 00:13:06.82\00:13:08.58 And now we hear Jesus respond to the apostle John. 00:13:08.88\00:13:14.42 "But He laid His right hand on me and said, 00:13:14.92\00:13:18.53 'Do not be afraid. 00:13:19.26\00:13:22.46 Don't be afraid. 00:13:23.26\00:13:25.97 I am the First and the Last. 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.57 I'm the strong One. 00:13:29.80\00:13:31.24 I'm the Alpha and the Omega. 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.04 No matter what you're going through, 00:13:34.31\00:13:36.38 I'm in control. 00:13:36.58\00:13:38.01 I am the One who's in charge. 00:13:38.41\00:13:42.02 Don't be afraid.'" 00:13:42.38\00:13:43.72 Listen, Jesus loves you. 00:13:43.75\00:13:46.29 And if we trust Him, there's no reason 00:13:46.86\00:13:50.16 why we should be afraid. 00:13:50.63\00:13:52.63
