We're talking about why the resurrection of Jesus 00:00:04.00\00:00:06.33 was not a myth. 00:00:06.37\00:00:07.70 And we've just talked about the 5280 00:00:07.74\00:00:10.91 some documentation or early documentation that we have. 00:00:10.94\00:00:13.84 But in addition to that, we have another 17,000 plus 00:00:14.08\00:00:18.38 from early church fathers. 00:00:18.41\00:00:19.75 In fact, we have so many quotes on the New Testament 00:00:19.78\00:00:22.28 from early church fathers that we could actually 00:00:22.32\00:00:24.89 reconstruct the whole New Testament 00:00:24.92\00:00:26.29 just from their sayings alone. 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.62 So when you put all of this together, 00:00:29.09\00:00:31.16 you come to a powerful conclusion. 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.23 And the conclusion is this. 00:00:34.53\00:00:36.23 That is we reject the authenticity of the testimony 00:00:36.63\00:00:40.44 of the New Testament based on the textual grounds, 00:00:40.47\00:00:43.97 we'll have to reject all that history you learned in school. 00:00:44.07\00:00:48.04 We'd have to reject every work of antiquity prior to AD 1000 00:00:48.84\00:00:53.08 since there's less manuscript evidence for their authenticity 00:00:53.45\00:00:58.25 than there is for the New Testament. 00:00:58.29\00:01:00.09 So we have powerful, powerful evidence 00:01:00.26\00:01:03.86 that the New Testament is a legitimate testimony 00:01:03.96\00:01:07.96 of what happened in the life of Jesus. 00:01:08.26\00:01:10.43 Now let's turn to that accurate testimony 00:01:11.13\00:01:13.50 and talk about the resurrection just from that standpoint. 00:01:13.74\00:01:17.01 Now some of our friends, as I mentioned earlier, 00:01:17.27\00:01:19.64 said, "Oh, well, Jesus didn't really die. 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.94 He just swooned." 00:01:22.98\00:01:24.68 And you want to say, "Really?" 00:01:25.28\00:01:27.38 "Just swooned. Yeah, He just swooned. 00:01:27.42\00:01:28.78 He didn't really die. 00:01:28.82\00:01:30.15 So He wasn't resurrected." 00:01:30.19\00:01:31.82 Well, you know, the Roman soldiers 00:01:32.22\00:01:34.09 were good at killing people. 00:01:34.12\00:01:35.62 In fact, as far as we know, there's no one 00:01:35.66\00:01:37.83 that's every survived the death of crucifixion. 00:01:37.86\00:01:41.43 We have no known records of it. 00:01:41.46\00:01:43.47 The Roman soldiers did not break the legs of the two thieves, 00:01:43.73\00:01:47.44 did not break Jesus' legs because He was already dead. 00:01:47.47\00:01:51.01 But they did break the legs of the two thieves. 00:01:51.04\00:01:53.54 Why did they do that? 00:01:53.58\00:01:55.18 Because of Jewish law. 00:01:55.21\00:01:56.85 Jewish law demanded that you could not leave the bodies 00:01:56.88\00:02:00.12 on the cross over the Sabbath hours. 00:02:00.15\00:02:03.25 They had to complete the execution 00:02:03.28\00:02:05.42 and they had to bury them before Sabbath began. 00:02:05.45\00:02:09.09 So we know that even according to Jewish law 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.99 they couldn't leave Jesus on the cross 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.23 over the Sabbath if He was still alive. 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.10 No, He didn't swoon. 00:02:17.13\00:02:18.47 He was dead. 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.60 And John, who was an eyewitness, said he saw blood and water 00:02:21.34\00:02:24.91 coming out of the wound from the soldier. 00:02:24.94\00:02:27.01 If the nails hadn't killed Jesus, 00:02:27.04\00:02:28.58 the soldier's spear certainly would have done it. 00:02:28.61\00:02:31.05 And the water coming out, blood and water, was a sure sign 00:02:31.31\00:02:35.05 that Jesus was dead. 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.02 The other thing is that Pilate, the Roman governor, 00:02:37.05\00:02:40.72 had to have certification. 00:02:40.76\00:02:42.49 He not only had to have certification 00:02:42.52\00:02:43.86 from the centurion, but he had to have several other 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.43 of his company certify with him that the prisoners were dead. 00:02:46.46\00:02:51.43 And they brought that certification to Pilate 00:02:52.10\00:02:55.50 or Pilate would have never, ever released the body 00:02:55.54\00:02:58.67 of Jesus to Joseph of Arimathea. 00:02:58.87\00:03:02.31 There was one person who wrote in to somebody 00:03:03.65\00:03:07.62 by the name of Eutychus I think who gives answers to people, 00:03:07.65\00:03:11.35 and so forth. 00:03:11.39\00:03:12.72 He was complaining about his preacher, 00:03:12.75\00:03:14.29 which he probably should have, because his preacher said, 00:03:14.32\00:03:17.46 this is a Christian preacher, so called, 00:03:17.49\00:03:19.93 said, "Well Jesus didn't really die." 00:03:20.10\00:03:22.30 Well Eutychus wrote back and said this, 00:03:22.56\00:03:24.67 and I'm going to read it because it's very good. 00:03:24.80\00:03:26.97 It says, "Dear Bewildered..." 00:03:27.40\00:03:29.37 He was bewildered because of his preacher's statement. 00:03:29.64\00:03:32.04 It says, "Dear Bewildered, beat your pastor 00:03:32.81\00:03:36.04 with a cat of nine tails 39 times, 00:03:36.54\00:03:40.02 nail him to a cross, hang him in the sun for six hours, 00:03:40.58\00:03:45.49 run a spear through his side, embalm him, 00:03:45.52\00:03:48.62 put him in an airless tomb for 36 hours, 00:03:48.66\00:03:51.29 and see what happens." 00:03:51.33\00:03:52.89 Yes, Jesus died. 00:03:53.80\00:03:55.13 There's no question that His death was true. 00:03:55.16\00:03:57.80 And then we have the burial, of course. 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.60 Joseph of Arimathea was well known. 00:03:59.80\00:04:02.20 He was part of the Jewish Sanhedrin. 00:04:02.24\00:04:04.41 And so was Nicodemus. 00:04:04.44\00:04:06.07 These guys were not somebody who just came up 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.28 out of the woodwork somewhere. 00:04:08.31\00:04:10.45 They were known all over Jerusalem. 00:04:10.61\00:04:12.51 And it was Joseph of Arimathea who brought Jesus 00:04:13.52\00:04:16.08 and actually buried Him in his own tomb and embalmed Jesus. 00:04:16.12\00:04:20.66 If this had not been true, when the disciples preached this, 00:04:20.76\00:04:24.36 not in some faraway place, they preached it right in 00:04:24.39\00:04:27.16 Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. 00:04:27.20\00:04:29.26 They preached it right in Jerusalem where there was 00:04:29.30\00:04:31.50 the Sanhedrin that had actually ordered the death of Jesus 00:04:31.53\00:04:36.71 and had Him crucified. 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.07 They preached it right under the nose of Pontius Pilate, 00:04:38.11\00:04:41.24 the governor who had Jesus crucified. 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.55 No, Jesus was buried by Joseph of Arimathea. 00:04:45.08\00:04:49.42 If that were not true, then they would have quickly 00:04:49.45\00:04:52.89 called the apostles liars and probably 00:04:52.92\00:04:56.19 had arrested them for misleading the people. 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.09 But they didn't have any evidence on which 00:04:59.19\00:05:00.96 to do that, of course. 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.66 And then as we continue to look at the record, 00:05:03.13\00:05:06.13 we understand that the disciples are not going to 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.80 make up the names of Joseph of Arimathea, 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.01 they're not going to make up the names of Nicodemus. 00:05:11.04\00:05:14.18 The hostility was so bad between the apostles and between the 00:05:14.91\00:05:17.98 Sanhedrin that if the Sanhedrin had just had any kind of 00:05:18.01\00:05:21.08 evidence, they would have been glad to have called 00:05:21.12\00:05:23.55 the disciples, not only liars, but they would have 00:05:23.59\00:05:26.42 probably put them to death. 00:05:26.45\00:05:27.86 Well, let's go to the empty tomb itself. 00:05:29.39\00:05:31.96 The tomb is empty. 00:05:32.39\00:05:34.10 Now the Jews came up with this crazy idea that 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.36 the disciples stole the body. 00:05:36.40\00:05:38.63 Really? 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.34 Twelve frightened disciples in the upper room, 00:05:40.50\00:05:45.01 scared of their own shadow, behind locked doors 00:05:45.37\00:05:49.61 on the Sabbath, the Saturday, before the morning 00:05:50.81\00:05:53.88 of the resurrection? 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.28 And they got themselves together and went out 00:05:55.72\00:05:58.12 and took on a hundred Roman soldiers, with a two ton rock, 00:05:58.15\00:06:04.33 and with a Roman seal? 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.06 And if you broke that seal, 00:06:06.09\00:06:07.93 you were going to find yourself crucified. 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.77 Nah. 00:06:12.17\00:06:13.50 They weren't going to take on a hundred Roman soldiers. 00:06:13.60\00:06:16.04 And I doubt that they even had the strength to 00:06:16.81\00:06:18.71 push that two ton rock back. 00:06:18.74\00:06:21.11 They were frightened. 00:06:21.74\00:06:23.08 And they suddenly had the courage to do this? 00:06:23.55\00:06:26.18 No. 00:06:26.41\00:06:27.75 The Sanhedrin, nor the Romans, by the way, had the body. 00:06:28.28\00:06:31.75 If they had the body of Jesus, they would have produced it. 00:06:31.79\00:06:36.12 And they had every interest in wanting to 00:06:36.36\00:06:39.36 find the body of Christ. 00:06:39.39\00:06:40.76 Believe me. 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.13 And if they had produced it, either the Romans 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.63 or the Sanhedrin, Christianity would have been finished. 00:06:44.93\00:06:49.60 It would have been done. 00:06:50.21\00:06:51.54 It would have been over with. 00:06:51.77\00:06:53.17 Because the resurrection of Jesus is central 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.44 to everything that we hold dear and believe. 00:06:56.54\00:06:59.85 Now another thing that's very interesting is this. 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.35 You know, the soldiers came back and they were, 00:07:05.39\00:07:09.32 they were just overwhelmed that Jesus was resurrected. 00:07:09.96\00:07:13.09 They saw Him resurrected. 00:07:13.13\00:07:14.56 They were telling this to the Sanhedrin, 00:07:14.60\00:07:16.40 or at least the leaders of the Sanhedrin. 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.50 And you know the story of how they bought them off with money. 00:07:18.90\00:07:22.20 You know, I remember old H.M.S Richards. 00:07:22.40\00:07:25.21 He once said, "You know, money buys a lot of things." 00:07:25.24\00:07:28.48 And he was referring to how these soldiers 00:07:28.51\00:07:32.08 were bought off with money. 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.45 They went in with the truth and came out with the lie, 00:07:33.48\00:07:36.35 "The disciples stole the body while we slept." 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.45 Really? 00:07:39.49\00:07:40.82 This is a big deal. 00:07:41.12\00:07:43.02 The penalty for sleeping on the job 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.59 for Roman soldiers was death. 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.26 Think about that. 00:07:51.57\00:07:52.90 And there's something else to think about. 00:07:53.54\00:07:55.40 If the disciples stole the body of Jesus 00:07:56.50\00:07:59.84 while they were asleep, how did they know that 00:07:59.87\00:08:03.18 it was the disciples that stole the body of Jesus? 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.75 Of course not. 00:08:07.62\00:08:08.95 The disciples didn't steal the body of Jesus. 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.05 Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week 00:08:12.69\00:08:15.69 on Sunday morning, to the glory of God. 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.73 And of course, there's the testimonies that we have. 00:08:19.69\00:08:21.90 We have a lot of testimonies. 00:08:21.93\00:08:23.77 We have first, of course, the hundred soldier's testimonies. 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.60 They went into the leaders of the Sanhedrin 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.94 that we just talked about. 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.31 And then we have the testimony of the women. 00:08:30.81\00:08:33.11 And the women were the first to see the resurrected Christ. 00:08:33.74\00:08:37.68 They're the ones that ran to the disciples and said, 00:08:37.71\00:08:39.58 "We've seen the resurrected Jesus. 00:08:39.61\00:08:41.18 We've seen Him." 00:08:41.22\00:08:42.55 In those days people wouldn't include the testimony 00:08:43.02\00:08:46.32 of the women, but they included the testimony of the women here. 00:08:46.42\00:08:50.49 And then you have the testimony of Mary, 00:08:50.93\00:08:53.66 that she saw Jesus and that she talked with Him. 00:08:53.70\00:08:56.87 It's one of the most beautiful pictures in the New Testament. 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.97 There is Mary, she's weeping. 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.04 Her brother has been resurrected by Jesus; Lazarus. 00:09:03.54\00:09:07.74 And now the tomb is empty. 00:09:08.24\00:09:09.58 She thinks somebody has taken the body of Jesus. 00:09:09.61\00:09:12.25 She thought, well, if Joseph's tomb was too good for Jesus, 00:09:12.38\00:09:15.45 she had an empty tomb. 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.05 A tomb that Jesus had made empty by His own power 00:09:17.25\00:09:20.12 when He resurrected Lazarus from the dead. 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.72 And then suddenly she heard that voice, 00:09:23.09\00:09:25.26 that wonderful voice of Jesus, "Mary." 00:09:25.96\00:09:30.30 She turned, and she thought maybe through her tears 00:09:30.90\00:09:35.67 it was the gardener. 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.07 And she says, you know, "Tell me where you've taken Him. 00:09:37.51\00:09:40.41 I'll take Him." 00:09:40.44\00:09:41.78 And Jesus says, "Mary." 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.98 And Mary recognizes Jesus. 00:09:46.68\00:09:50.19 She falls at His feet to worship Him. 00:09:50.69\00:09:53.25 Her heart is thrilled. 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.52 All their dreams that had been dashed, 00:09:55.56\00:09:58.99 all the hopes that had been dashed, 00:09:59.03\00:10:00.90 all that mournful Sabbath that they had spent together. 00:10:01.13\00:10:05.27 All of that time. 00:10:05.37\00:10:07.20 Now, now that flies away because there's great hope. 00:10:08.74\00:10:14.31 She's seen the resurrected Jesus. 00:10:14.34\00:10:17.91 And then of course, there's the testimony of two disciples 00:10:18.81\00:10:22.25 on the road to Emmaus. 00:10:22.28\00:10:23.69 They weren't part of the twelve. 00:10:23.72\00:10:25.65 And that is a fascinating story. 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.02 Here they are on the road to Damascus. 00:10:28.19\00:10:31.19 Not to Damascus, but to a small village of about 00:10:31.23\00:10:34.06 seven or eight miles away from Jerusalem. 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.20 The road to Emmaus. 00:10:36.30\00:10:37.67 And they're talking about all the events: 00:10:37.97\00:10:40.44 the death of Jesus, the Sanhedrin, and the crucifixion. 00:10:40.47\00:10:44.81 And then they're joined by a stranger. 00:10:45.27\00:10:47.68 And this is a point I want to make. 00:10:48.14\00:10:50.21 This stranger explained to them why the Messiah had to die 00:10:51.15\00:10:55.32 and be resurrected. 00:10:55.35\00:10:56.79 And He explained it to them from the Scriptures 00:10:56.82\00:10:59.09 starting from the Old Testament all the way through. 00:10:59.12\00:11:02.72 And their hearts were thrilled. 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.59 Who was this stranger? 00:11:04.63\00:11:06.23 They didn't seem to recognize Him. 00:11:06.26\00:11:08.13 They insisted that He come in for supper. 00:11:08.16\00:11:11.07 You know, you should always insist on the presence of Jesus. 00:11:11.10\00:11:13.94 And when He came in and started to have the blessing, 00:11:15.07\00:11:17.27 they suddenly recognized Him. 00:11:17.31\00:11:19.34 They couldn't contain themselves. 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.14 They ran all the way back to Jerusalem 00:11:22.24\00:11:24.88
