Well we just got through talking about how this 70 weeks 00:00:05.00\00:00:07.84 is really some good math to help assure you that Jesus 00:00:07.87\00:00:10.91 is indeed the Messiah of the world. 00:00:10.94\00:00:12.77 So now the angel gives Daniel, the angel Gabriel, 00:00:13.58\00:00:17.58 gives Daniel a starting point. 00:00:17.61\00:00:19.71 Where does this start? How do we know? 00:00:20.02\00:00:23.22 If you don't know when it starts, the rest of it 00:00:23.25\00:00:25.49 won't make any sense. 00:00:25.52\00:00:26.86 But the angel is very clear. 00:00:27.06\00:00:28.76 In Daniel 9:25 the angels says, "Know therefore and understand 00:00:28.79\00:00:34.70 that from the going forth of the commandment 00:00:34.93\00:00:37.23 to restore and rebuild Jerusalem 00:00:37.47\00:00:40.90 until Messiah the Prince shall be..." 00:00:41.10\00:00:44.97 And then the angel, of course, divides it up 00:00:45.27\00:00:47.38 just like I talked about earlier. 00:00:47.41\00:00:49.14 7 weeks, 62 weeks, and finally 1 week. 00:00:49.58\00:00:55.18 Which added together makes 70 weeks. 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.15 70 weeks, of course, of years. 00:00:58.19\00:01:00.16 Or 490 years. 00:01:00.49\00:01:01.86 But we're talking about the 70 weeks because it's 00:01:01.89\00:01:03.96 so easy to understand it that way. 00:01:03.99\00:01:06.03 So let's go back to this. 00:01:06.59\00:01:08.26 When did that decree happen? 00:01:08.53\00:01:10.87 When was it that this decree was given? 00:01:10.90\00:01:14.90 Well as you know, Babylon passed off the scene. 00:01:14.94\00:01:18.24 And as Babylon passed off the scene 00:01:18.34\00:01:20.28 the Medo-Persia empire came into being. 00:01:20.48\00:01:24.08 And the great first king of the Medo-Persian empire 00:01:24.31\00:01:27.45 was Cyrus the Great. 00:01:27.48\00:01:29.18 The book of Isaiah actually predicted him by name 00:01:29.22\00:01:32.15 that he would let God's people go back to Jerusalem. 00:01:32.19\00:01:35.09 Because they'd been scattered after the Babylonian captivity. 00:01:35.12\00:01:38.73 So Cyrus, believe it or not, actually made a decree 00:01:39.33\00:01:44.27 in 536 BC, Before Christ, to send Israel back 00:01:44.40\00:01:51.24 or to allow them to go back and to rebuild the temple. 00:01:51.27\00:01:54.04 But he died a few years later. 00:01:55.41\00:01:58.68 And after he died, and this is where the story gets 00:01:58.91\00:02:01.95 really interesting, after Cyrus the Great died 00:02:01.98\00:02:05.89 another king, about two kings later, came on the throne 00:02:05.92\00:02:10.89 and he was called the false king or the false Smerdis. 00:02:11.09\00:02:14.83 There he was, and wouldn't you know it, 00:02:14.86\00:02:17.63 the enemies of Israel... 00:02:17.73\00:02:19.07 And oh yes, they had enemies. 00:02:19.10\00:02:21.24 In fact, the prophecy said that it would all be done 00:02:21.80\00:02:24.81 in troublous times, difficult times. 00:02:24.84\00:02:27.98 We live in a troubled world. 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.15 But thank the Lord we have a Messiah. 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.35 That's what we're going to get back to here. 00:02:32.38\00:02:34.32 To show how indeed He is the Messiah of the world. 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.55 So he comes on the scene, and Israel's enemies go to him 00:02:37.99\00:02:42.06 and they groan and moan and complain, and say all kinds of 00:02:42.09\00:02:44.83 things that aren't true to accuse the Jews of these things. 00:02:44.86\00:02:48.90 And he stops the building. 00:02:49.00\00:02:51.53 He stops the building. 00:02:52.17\00:02:54.00 Well, so everything ceased. 00:02:55.64\00:02:58.81 Things were kind of in a difficult time. 00:02:59.07\00:03:01.64 Israel decided to try to get going again. 00:03:01.98\00:03:04.48 And a new king came on and he gave them permission 00:03:04.51\00:03:08.42 to at least rebuild the temple. 00:03:08.45\00:03:10.49 But that wasn't the decree either because they had enemies, 00:03:11.09\00:03:14.22 and these enemies pushed back. 00:03:14.26\00:03:16.02 And another king came on the scene. 00:03:16.06\00:03:19.09 And these enemies went to this king and they said to him, 00:03:19.79\00:03:22.86 "Look, these Jews are very difficult. 00:03:22.90\00:03:26.37 You need to make them stop." 00:03:26.57\00:03:28.84 They did not want Jerusalem rebuilt, 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.11 they did not want the temple rebuilt. 00:03:31.14\00:03:32.87 But this king did something very interesting. 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.68 He said, "Okay, I've heard your complaint. 00:03:35.71\00:03:38.35 But I will search the records." 00:03:38.38\00:03:40.12 And believe it or not, he found in the records 00:03:40.15\00:03:44.05 the first king of Persia, the great Cyrus, Cyrus the Great, 00:03:44.09\00:03:49.29 he had actually made the declaration giving permission 00:03:49.32\00:03:51.63 for the Jews to go back. 00:03:51.66\00:03:52.99 So in contrary to these complaints of their enemies, 00:03:53.33\00:03:57.77 this king issues a decree and says they are to be allowed 00:03:57.80\00:04:01.90 to not only rebuild the temple and the wall, 00:04:01.94\00:04:04.21 but the whole city of Jerusalem. 00:04:04.24\00:04:05.81 He allows them to put their Jewish laws back into place. 00:04:05.84\00:04:09.01 He allows them a certain amount of self-autonomy. 00:04:09.04\00:04:12.28 He basically restores the nation that had not 00:04:12.31\00:04:15.68 been really done before. 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.45 And he even orders the enemies to help them. 00:04:18.25\00:04:21.42 This time that's the decree, 457 BC, that gets the job done. 00:04:21.52\00:04:26.96 And when that first 7 weeks is finished, 00:04:27.33\00:04:29.90 not only do we have the temple rebuilt, 00:04:30.23\00:04:32.43 but the wall has been rebuilt. 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.44 And of course, you know the story of Ezra and Nehemiah. 00:04:34.47\00:04:37.21 And you can find that story, wonderful Nehemiah, 00:04:37.24\00:04:41.11 who the Holy Spirit moved on his heart there with the king. 00:04:41.14\00:04:45.21 He was the king's cup bearer. 00:04:45.41\00:04:47.08 And he went to the king and he pled with the king 00:04:47.12\00:04:49.62 to allow him, after the king opened the door 00:04:49.82\00:04:52.45 and asked him why he looked so sad. 00:04:52.49\00:04:54.02 He asked the king, he said, "I want to go back 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.79 and finish the wall of Jerusalem." 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.16 I'm putting this in my words. 00:04:58.19\00:04:59.69 And the king gave him not only permission, but gave him 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.96 financial resources to get it done. 00:05:03.26\00:05:06.10 So Nehemiah goes back. 00:05:06.33\00:05:07.84 He's one of the great men of the ancient Old Testament. 00:05:07.87\00:05:12.41 He did the almost impossible. 00:05:13.07\00:05:15.58 You can read the story there. 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.78 Completing the wall in just about 50 days. 00:05:17.81\00:05:21.75 It's an amazing story. 00:05:21.98\00:05:23.55 But it was done. 00:05:23.59\00:05:24.92 The temple is rebuilt, the wall is rebuilt, 00:05:24.95\00:05:27.09 and Israel is restored as a nation. 00:05:27.19\00:05:29.16 "Know therefore and understand from the going forth 00:05:29.32\00:05:32.23 of the commandment..." 00:05:32.26\00:05:33.60 So now we have the starting date. 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.40 457 BC. 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.50 So just as the prophecy said, from 457 BC, 00:05:38.37\00:05:42.40 that first 7 weeks, it's finished. 00:05:42.50\00:05:44.71 But now it says something that must really get our attention. 00:05:44.74\00:05:47.94 It says, "...until Messiah the Prince..." 00:05:48.18\00:05:50.75 That means there's 62 more weeks until Messiah shows up. 00:05:50.78\00:05:55.38 Messiah. 00:05:55.98\00:05:57.35 Been the hope and the hearts of Israelites 00:05:58.19\00:06:01.09 all for hundreds and hundreds of years; 00:06:01.12\00:06:03.22 the hope of the world. 00:06:03.26\00:06:04.63 62 more weeks. 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.46 That would bring us to the year AD 27. 00:06:06.49\00:06:11.57 Now that's a very well established date in Scripture. 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.37 AD 27. 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.07 And AD 27 is the time when Jesus was baptized 00:06:16.17\00:06:21.54 by the prophet John the Baptist. 00:06:21.71\00:06:24.05 So He's been kind of in the background 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.25 working as a carpenter for 30 years. 00:06:27.28\00:06:29.22 But now He goes to the preaching of John the Baptist 00:06:29.25\00:06:32.29 who was to prepare the way for Jesus 00:06:32.32\00:06:34.39 to make the ministry of Jesus possible. 00:06:34.42\00:06:37.09 And He goes to John, He says, "I would like to be baptized." 00:06:37.33\00:06:39.93 John is taken back; he says, "I need to be baptized by You." 00:06:39.96\00:06:43.43 He could see that this man was a perfect man, 00:06:43.47\00:06:47.10 a godly man. 00:06:47.60\00:06:48.94 And Jesus says, "No, let Me be baptized." 00:06:48.97\00:06:51.37 So He can fulfill all righteousness. 00:06:51.41\00:06:53.68 When John sees Jesus he calls Him, he says to 00:06:53.88\00:06:57.31 everybody around him, "Look, the Lamb of God 00:06:57.35\00:07:01.08 that takes away the sin of the world." 00:07:01.12\00:07:02.75 In other words, this is indeed the Messiah. 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.89 John had been raised up to prepare the way for the Messiah 00:07:05.99\00:07:09.52 and to tell the startling news. 00:07:09.56\00:07:11.26 And this is startling news. 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.69 And this is why John's preaching was so 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.76 captivating to the nation. 00:07:14.93\00:07:16.67 He says, "The Messiah is already here." 00:07:16.77\00:07:19.67 And He was. 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.40 So AD 27, just as the prophecy said, 00:07:22.14\00:07:25.97 just as the math said, Jesus appeared on the scene 00:07:26.01\00:07:30.61 as the Messiah of the world. 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.55 He started His three and a half years of ministry. 00:07:32.58\00:07:37.09 Now we've got 1 week, 1 week left. 00:07:37.19\00:07:39.92 And AD 27 starts that last week. 00:07:40.26\00:07:43.76 One week, 7 years. 00:07:44.86\00:07:47.40 Jesus' ministry lasted for three and a half years. 00:07:47.96\00:07:51.50 And the prophecy said that in the midst of the week 00:07:51.53\00:07:55.40 the Messiah would be cut off. 00:07:55.44\00:07:57.74 In other words, He would die. 00:07:58.21\00:07:59.87 But not for Himself. 00:08:00.41\00:08:02.28 He died for you. He died for me. 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.58 He died for the whole world. 00:08:05.61\00:08:06.95 He died so that He could get the world 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.32 out of the mess that it's in. 00:08:08.35\00:08:09.92 And He died on time. 00:08:10.59\00:08:12.75 He came on time, AD 27, 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.62 and He died on time, in the midst of the week. 00:08:16.02\00:08:18.83 But there is still another half of that week left. 00:08:19.56\00:08:23.97 This is the week that changed the world. 00:08:24.50\00:08:27.80 This is the week that changed human civilization. 00:08:28.14\00:08:31.64 This is the week that's changed your life and my life. 00:08:31.94\00:08:35.34 I'm telling you, the United States of America 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.81 wouldn't exist without this week. 00:08:38.85\00:08:40.68 Christianity wouldn't exist without this week. 00:08:41.18\00:08:43.59 Without the death and the resurrection of Jesus 00:08:43.69\00:08:45.59 in the midst of this week, all the hopes and dreams 00:08:45.62\00:08:48.89 we have of a future life would have all vanished. 00:08:48.92\00:08:52.29 But it hasn't vanished. 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.30 It's a reality. 00:08:54.56\00:08:55.90 Jesus did die, and He was resurrected. 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.53 We'll talk more about that resurrection next time. 00:08:58.57\00:09:01.04 But I want to come back to the end of that week. 00:09:01.70\00:09:04.34 Because with that 70 weeks Jesus had made a covenant 00:09:05.11\00:09:09.24 with His people. 00:09:09.28\00:09:10.61 And He was keeping that covenant. 00:09:10.85\00:09:12.81 And so at the end of that 70th week, that last week 00:09:13.18\00:09:17.49 that changed the world, something very special happened. 00:09:17.52\00:09:22.99 In AD 34, at the end of that 70th week, 00:09:23.93\00:09:28.70 the Sanhedrin gathered to try a man, 00:09:29.20\00:09:32.87 a man by the name of Stephen. 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.90 One of the greatest apostles, if you please. 00:09:35.50\00:09:38.97 He was actually ordained as a deacon, but I think he 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.84 certainly had the apostolic gift. 00:09:41.88\00:09:45.18 And he was a powerful preacher. 00:09:46.01\00:09:47.65 He converted a lot of people to Christianity. 00:09:47.68\00:09:50.42 And they were very angry about it. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.59 This is three and a half years after Jesus' 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.99 death and resurrection, in the midst of that 70th last week. 00:09:55.02\00:09:59.93 And so they brought Stephen in for the trial. 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.47 And Stephen did something very fascinating. 00:10:04.77\00:10:07.70 He began to trace the history of Israel 00:10:07.84\00:10:11.91 down from Abraham through Moses, how God has protected them, 00:10:12.97\00:10:17.81 how they had been stubborn. 00:10:17.91\00:10:20.08 You know, it's not a good thing to be stubborn with the truth. 00:10:20.38\00:10:23.79 They had been stubborn. 00:10:24.19\00:10:25.85 And how they had resisted the Holy Spirit. 00:10:26.76\00:10:29.39 And he brought them all the way down to the Messiah, Jesus. 00:10:29.69\00:10:34.06 And as he got to that part, they couldn't stand it any longer. 00:10:34.40\00:10:38.13 They were so angry. 00:10:38.17\00:10:39.50 These were the same people that put Jesus to death 00:10:39.53\00:10:44.11 on Calvary's cross. 00:10:44.14\00:10:45.67 And as Stephen said to them that they had crucified 00:10:45.87\00:10:49.34 or put to death the Son of God, they really became disturbed. 00:10:49.38\00:10:54.45 When he said that God doesn't live in a temple 00:10:54.68\00:10:57.79 made with hands, they became outraged. 00:10:57.82\00:11:00.76 And they rushed on Stephen, took him out, 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.93 and stoned him to death. 00:11:03.96\00:11:05.69 The same Sanhedrin that had put Jesus Himself to death. 00:11:05.73\00:11:10.53 The Jewish nation, as a nation at this point, 00:11:10.90\00:11:13.67 had finished its covenant. 00:11:14.14\00:11:16.57 Jesus had kept His covenant with them, 00:11:16.60\00:11:19.37 but they had not kept their covenant with Him. 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.68 And so now the gospel would go to the world, 00:11:22.04\00:11:25.01 not through the Jewish nation, 00:11:25.05\00:11:26.78 but through the Christian church. 00:11:26.88\00:11:28.62 So there's been a great change here. 00:11:29.25\00:11:31.05 It was a week, it was a week that changed the world. 00:11:31.09\00:11:35.09 It certainly has changed my life, 00:11:35.32\00:11:37.09 and the life of countless millions ever since. 00:11:37.29\00:11:40.56 And just to add to this, the reason I don't need to go back 00:11:41.16\00:11:46.50 and worship on those feast days and go through the old 00:11:47.20\00:11:51.47 tabernacle service is because Jesus fulfilled all of that. 00:11:51.51\00:11:55.78 When He was cut off in the midst of the week, 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.05 the scripture said, prophecy said, he would put an end 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.95 to the tabernacle services. 00:12:02.05\00:12:03.49 And that's what the Jewish leadership was so 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.02 concerned about and so afraid. 00:12:06.05\00:12:08.06 So the 70th week, it's finished. 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.76 Mathematical proof that Jesus is indeed the Messiah of the world. 00:12:11.29\00:12:15.76 The Messiah the world needs. 00:12:16.10\00:12:18.03 The Messiah that should not be made fun of or mocked. 00:12:18.27\00:12:21.47 The Messiah that is changing and has changed the world. 00:12:21.74\00:12:26.17 He injected new life and new power in the world. 00:12:26.21\00:12:30.01 I hate to think what the last 2000 years would have been like 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.35 if we had not had Jesus in that last week, 00:12:33.52\00:12:37.39 the week that changed the world. 00:12:37.75\00:12:39.55 So the question for all of us is, Jesus keeps His covenant. 00:12:39.85\00:12:44.23 He keeps it through thick and thin, 00:12:44.36\00:12:46.43 through difficulty and trial, through hardship to Himself. 00:12:46.46\00:12:50.87 Self-sacrificing Jesus keeps His covenant. 00:12:50.97\00:12:54.97 And He makes a covenant with everyone 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.44 that's willing to make a covenant with Him. 00:12:57.61\00:12:59.51 If you've made a covenant with Jesus to make Him your Savior 00:12:59.87\00:13:02.58 and your Messiah, the question now is, 00:13:02.61\00:13:05.55 are you keeping your covenant? 00:13:05.71\00:13:07.38 By the way, He has power. 00:13:07.48\00:13:08.92 He has power, not only to forgive your sins, 00:13:08.95\00:13:11.19 but He has power to make a new person out of you, 00:13:11.25\00:13:13.76 and to resurrect you from the dead when He comes 00:13:13.86\00:13:16.42 in the clouds of glory. 00:13:16.46\00:13:17.79 This Messiah has the power to deliver on all your hopes 00:13:17.89\00:13:23.97 and all your dreams. 00:13:24.00\00:13:25.67 This Messiah who has been proved from Scripture, 00:13:25.70\00:13:29.60 mathematically, is indeed the Messiah of the world. 00:13:29.64\00:13:33.34 He's your Messiah, 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.04 He's my Messiah, 00:13:35.11\00:13:36.44 if we want Him to be our hope and our dream. 00:13:36.58\00:13:41.35
