The following program discusses sensitive issues 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.10 related to sexuality. 00:00:03.13\00:00:05.07 Parents are cautioned 00:00:05.10\00:00:06.43 this presentation may be too candid 00:00:06.47\00:00:08.64 for younger audiences. 00:00:08.67\00:00:10.31 Welcome to Intimate Clarity. 00:00:29.29\00:00:30.73 I'm Jason Bradley, 00:00:30.76\00:00:32.09 and I'm here with Jennifer Jill Schwirzer, 00:00:32.13\00:00:33.96 and she is a licensed professional counselor. 00:00:34.00\00:00:37.00 And today, we're going to be discussing 00:00:37.03\00:00:38.63 a very sensitive topic 00:00:38.67\00:00:40.47 but it's a conversation we need to have. 00:00:40.50\00:00:42.94 Jen, what is transgenderism and how is it developed? 00:00:42.97\00:00:47.91 Good question. 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.28 And I'm really, really feeling sensitive 00:00:49.31\00:00:52.45 about answering it 00:00:52.48\00:00:53.82 because I know that there are people out there 00:00:53.85\00:00:55.32 that are struggling with transgenderism, 00:00:55.35\00:00:57.65 and I know that there are people 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.25 that love people 00:00:59.29\00:01:00.62 that are struggling with transgenderism, 00:01:00.66\00:01:02.36 and I know there are a wide variety of views 00:01:02.39\00:01:04.76 on this issue, 00:01:04.79\00:01:06.13 and I'm going to try to explain it 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.73 in the most tactful and loving and yet, 00:01:08.76\00:01:12.33 biblically grounded way that I can 00:01:12.37\00:01:14.04 and scientifically rounded way that I can. 00:01:14.07\00:01:16.44 So transgenderism is essentially 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.67 when an individual identifies themselves 00:01:19.71\00:01:22.51 as the opposite sex. 00:01:22.54\00:01:23.98 So I as a woman would be transgender 00:01:24.01\00:01:26.45 if I thought I was a man 00:01:26.48\00:01:27.82 or if I intensely wanted to be a man 00:01:27.85\00:01:30.75 and then also identified as a man. 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.15 Okay. 00:01:32.19\00:01:33.52 Or you would be transgender 00:01:33.56\00:01:34.89 if you identified yourself as a woman. 00:01:34.92\00:01:37.53 So let me give a little history about the diagnosis. 00:01:37.56\00:01:40.80 The previous revision of the diagnostic manual 00:01:40.83\00:01:44.73 of the American Psychiatric Association 00:01:44.77\00:01:47.27 called it gender identity disorder. 00:01:47.30\00:01:51.07 Now the transgender people didn't really like that 00:01:51.11\00:01:55.31 because they felt that 00:01:55.34\00:01:57.21 it pathologized their condition. 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.68 The diagnosis of homosexuality 00:02:00.72\00:02:03.59 had been taken out of the diagnostic manual in 1973. 00:02:03.62\00:02:08.02 And the transgender people said, 00:02:08.06\00:02:09.66 "Well, we don't want to be in there either, 00:02:09.69\00:02:11.06 we don't want our condition to be pathologized." 00:02:11.09\00:02:14.30 They say, "We're just one more variant 00:02:14.33\00:02:18.13 on a rainbow of choices" 00:02:18.17\00:02:20.44 and homosexuals will say the same thing. 00:02:20.47\00:02:23.27 See, that's interesting to me because like before 00:02:23.30\00:02:27.48 it was identified as a disorder, 00:02:27.51\00:02:29.81 now it's being taught to kids in school. 00:02:29.84\00:02:32.08 That's right. 00:02:32.11\00:02:33.45 It's being totally normalized, and I would even say 00:02:33.48\00:02:36.28 a little glorified in some cases 00:02:36.32\00:02:38.15 as something very interesting. 00:02:38.19\00:02:39.89 So now recently the diagnostic manual 00:02:39.92\00:02:43.29 was revised in 2015. 00:02:43.32\00:02:45.59 And now it's called gender dysphoria. 00:02:45.63\00:02:49.16 See, the problem with taking it 00:02:49.20\00:02:50.83 completely out of the diagnostic manual 00:02:50.87\00:02:53.03 is that then transgender people 00:02:53.07\00:02:55.24 would not be able to get insurance coverage, 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.91 and their condition in their thinking 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.71 requires them to have hormone, medication, 00:03:00.74\00:03:04.21 and also to sometimes have surgery to transition 00:03:04.25\00:03:07.35 and they need insurance coverage 00:03:07.38\00:03:08.72 to be able do that. 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.09 So in order to get insurance coverage, 00:03:10.12\00:03:11.45 you need a diagnosis. 00:03:11.49\00:03:13.19 So they left it in the diagnostic manual, 00:03:13.22\00:03:15.56 but it is now called gender dysphoria. 00:03:15.59\00:03:18.36 So the thing that is pathological 00:03:18.39\00:03:20.10 is not the fact that I'm a woman, 00:03:20.13\00:03:21.46 I want to be a man or you're a man, 00:03:21.50\00:03:22.83 you want to be a woman, 00:03:22.86\00:03:24.23 it's the distress that you feel that accompanies that, 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.00 that leads to the diagnosis, 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.47 so that enabled them to stay in the manual, 00:03:29.50\00:03:32.14 get their insurance coverage and still not be pathologized 00:03:32.17\00:03:35.24 in their thinking. 00:03:35.28\00:03:36.95 So it's weird though that 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.28 every other type of misperception 00:03:39.31\00:03:42.32 of one's physical self 00:03:42.35\00:03:44.32 is still considered pathological. 00:03:44.35\00:03:46.42 So some examples of that would be anorexia, 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.06 and I've been through anorexia. 00:03:49.09\00:03:50.53 And I know when you are anorexic, 00:03:50.56\00:03:53.26 you think you're fat, 00:03:53.29\00:03:54.86 even though you're very, very thin, 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.83 even though you're underweight, you think you're overweight. 00:03:56.87\00:03:59.97 That's pathological. I've been through that. 00:04:00.00\00:04:03.54 It's a cognitive distortion, and it's a disorder 00:04:03.57\00:04:07.38 to think that way. 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.74 Another example is body dysmorphia. 00:04:08.78\00:04:12.38 Body dysmorphia is when a person 00:04:12.41\00:04:14.05 feels extremely self-conscious about the way they look, 00:04:14.08\00:04:17.09 but who it typically afflicts is very attractive people 00:04:17.12\00:04:20.06 that think they're atrociously ugly 00:04:20.09\00:04:21.59 or often it can afflict those people. 00:04:21.62\00:04:23.49 That's considered pathological 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.26 because your perception of yourself 00:04:25.29\00:04:27.76 is very far away from the physical reality. 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.30 Is that kind of along the lines 00:04:30.33\00:04:31.67 of that body shaming kind of thing? 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.17 Yeah. Okay. 00:04:33.20\00:04:34.54 It kind of comes along with that. 00:04:34.57\00:04:35.90 There is another condition that has never made it 00:04:35.94\00:04:37.77 into the diagnostic manual but it may someday, 00:04:37.81\00:04:40.88 and it's called body identity integrity disorder. 00:04:40.91\00:04:45.51 And what it is, is individuals who identify themselves 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.75 as not having for instance a limb, 00:04:49.78\00:04:52.95 maybe they see themselves as being without a leg, 00:04:52.99\00:04:56.36 and it will actually drive that person 00:04:56.39\00:04:58.69 to seek an amputation. 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.03 Now I think... 00:05:01.06\00:05:02.40 Yeah, I know. 00:05:02.43\00:05:03.77 Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.13 It's a rare thing, but it's a real thing. 00:05:05.17\00:05:06.50 So somebody who will think that they don't have an extremity, 00:05:06.53\00:05:10.87 whether it's an arm or leg or whatever... 00:05:10.91\00:05:12.64 Right. 00:05:12.67\00:05:14.08 And it'll drive them to want to get it amputated 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.45 their functioning leg? 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.88 To get their identity, 00:05:19.91\00:05:21.25 their self-perception to line up 00:05:21.28\00:05:22.88 with the physical reality of who they are. 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.75 Wow. 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.12 And I think possibly the reason 00:05:26.15\00:05:27.69 it's never made it into the diagnostic manuals 00:05:27.72\00:05:29.46 because the implications are very clear. 00:05:29.49\00:05:32.59 They're taking off perfectly healthy appendages 00:05:32.63\00:05:36.73 in the same way people who transition are taking off 00:05:36.77\00:05:40.74 perfectly healthy organs. 00:05:40.77\00:05:43.07 And so I think that there's a little bit 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.14 too much crossover there possibly. 00:05:45.17\00:05:47.61 Yes. 00:05:47.64\00:05:48.98 But let's get some rest from this distressing stuff 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.15 and let's look at the Bible 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.51 and what it says about human nature. 00:05:52.55\00:05:55.48 1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.82 "May your spirit, soul, and body 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.39 be preserved complete." 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.19 So you see this wholism, 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.86 it's what I called biblical wholism. 00:06:03.89\00:06:05.83 Okay. 00:06:05.86\00:06:07.20 The soul does not exist separate from the body. 00:06:07.23\00:06:12.57 That idea came into Christianity 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.07 through what we call the great compromise 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.17 about three centuries after Christ. 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.14 When the church wanted to include more people 00:06:20.18\00:06:24.11 from paganism and so it lowered the standards 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.55 in various areas doctrinally and lifestyle standards 00:06:26.58\00:06:30.15 to get more people to join the church, 00:06:30.19\00:06:31.79 it's not something we're totally foreign to. 00:06:31.82\00:06:34.29 And one of the things that came in, 00:06:34.32\00:06:35.69 one of the heresies that came in is this creek idea 00:06:35.72\00:06:39.19 that the body and the mind were separate or dichotomized. 00:06:39.23\00:06:43.63 It's called Greek dualism, 00:06:43.67\00:06:45.00 so the thinking was that the body is evil, 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.24 the soul has the spark of the divine, 00:06:47.27\00:06:49.74 and the soul will continue to live 00:06:49.77\00:06:51.57 throughout eternity apart from the body. 00:06:51.61\00:06:55.08 Once that got imported into Christianity, 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.28 then we started to develop a false doctrine, 00:06:57.31\00:07:00.05 such as the idea that people go immediately 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.85 to heaven or hell upon death 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.09 or the idea that there's an ever burning hell. 00:07:05.12\00:07:07.86 If the soul is eternal, it's got to live for eternity, 00:07:07.89\00:07:11.76 and so it has to go somewhere 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.73 and if it's not in heaven with God, 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.23 it's got to go somewhere and so this idea 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.40 of ever burning hell developed over time. 00:07:17.43\00:07:20.37 That's all the result of seeing the soul is something 00:07:20.40\00:07:23.71 that can live apart from the body, 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.21 that's all the result of a loss 00:07:26.24\00:07:28.48 of the biblical concept of wholism. 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.51 So you can see where this idea of transgenderism 00:07:31.55\00:07:34.52 would be a fruit of that, 00:07:34.55\00:07:35.88 my soul is something totally different from my body. 00:07:35.92\00:07:39.25 But biblical teaching says to anchor our identity 00:07:39.29\00:07:42.89 in who we are physically, who we are in reality. 00:07:42.92\00:07:47.10 So I mean there are lots of equivalents of this, 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.67 I'm sure being a young person, you can identify, 00:07:50.70\00:07:53.13 you wish you were, 00:07:53.17\00:07:54.50 you know, a famous basketball player, 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.20 or a rock star, or something. 00:07:56.24\00:07:58.17 You know, it's interesting 00:08:01.34\00:08:02.74 because when you're actually walking in, 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.31 your purpose like, you're so happy 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.11 and content in that because it's your purpose 00:08:06.15\00:08:09.68 is what God has given you to do. 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.22 So I'm happy being me because God is blessed. 00:08:12.25\00:08:15.92 So the million dollar question is, 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.83 has there been any science that has shown 00:08:17.86\00:08:20.33 that there is such a thing as a woman's brain 00:08:20.36\00:08:22.26 in a man's body or vice versa. 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.53 And in fact they have found that 00:08:24.57\00:08:26.00 there are some differences 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.37 in a brain of a transgender person, 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.77 but this is a quotation from a study 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.44 that was published in the journal, 00:08:32.47\00:08:35.21 The New Atlantis and it says, 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.01 "In short, the current studies on associations 00:08:37.05\00:08:40.32 between brain structure 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.32 and transgender identity are small, 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.42 methodologically limited, inconclusive, 00:08:45.45\00:08:49.79 and sometimes contradictory." 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.26 So they're not real strong 00:08:51.29\00:08:52.63 this idea of differences in brain structure. 00:08:52.66\00:08:55.36 But then it goes on to say, 00:08:55.40\00:08:57.23 "Even if they were more methodologically reliable, 00:08:57.27\00:09:00.50 they would be insufficient to demonstrate 00:09:00.54\00:09:02.70 that brain structure is a cause, 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.67 rather than an effect, 00:09:05.71\00:09:08.08 of the gender-identity behavior, " 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.84 because what happens 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.21 when people behave a certain way... 00:09:11.25\00:09:12.68 If I as a woman start behaving like a man, 00:09:12.71\00:09:15.05 it would change my brain. 00:09:15.08\00:09:16.48 So it's impossible to know whether those changes 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.52 which were not measured 00:09:19.55\00:09:20.89 before I started to transition is there 00:09:20.92\00:09:22.82 is just not enough research on it. 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.53 Happened, what came first, the chicken or the egg, 00:09:24.56\00:09:26.66 you know, the fact that I thought 00:09:26.70\00:09:28.03 I was transgender, 00:09:28.06\00:09:29.40 was that my brain different, led me to change 00:09:29.43\00:09:30.77 or the behaviors that I engaged 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.90 in actually changed my brain. 00:09:32.93\00:09:34.27 So we really don't know yet, we have not identified 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.74 female brain in male body or vice versa. 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.87 Okay. 00:09:38.91\00:09:40.24 So I want to say this though, it's very important 00:09:40.28\00:09:41.78 that I say that I am not denying the problem, 00:09:41.81\00:09:47.02 and I'm not belittling people that struggle with this, 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.28 I've been through it. 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.65 Not transgenderism, 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.02 but I've been through cognitive distortion 00:09:52.05\00:09:53.69 where I thought it was something that I wasn't. 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.32 And I would say, I still honestly struggle 00:09:56.36\00:09:58.93 with body dysmorphia. 00:09:58.96\00:10:00.50 I'm very self-conscious about the way that I look, 00:10:00.53\00:10:03.03 and sometimes I do dysfunctional things 00:10:03.06\00:10:05.20 to cope with that. 00:10:05.23\00:10:06.94 So I'm not putting myself 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.57 on a different plane than people, 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.17 I think people with transgenderism are, 00:10:10.21\00:10:12.64 they have a bigger struggle going on than I do. 00:10:12.67\00:10:16.14 I feel for them, I'm not denying the problem, 00:10:16.18\00:10:19.08 it happens, it happens in children, 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.02 it happens in teens, it happens in adults, 00:10:22.05\00:10:25.02 they believe that they are the other sex. 00:10:25.05\00:10:28.72 That's a very uncomfortable and distressing experience. 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.39 I'm not denying the problem, 00:10:31.43\00:10:32.96 what I'm denying is the solution 00:10:32.99\00:10:34.80 because I think 00:10:34.83\00:10:36.16 what's being put across to people 00:10:36.20\00:10:37.53 is just transition physically as if shazam, 00:10:37.57\00:10:41.14 you take these hormones, you get the surgery, 00:10:41.17\00:10:43.94 you're going to be the opposite sex, 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.31 but you're not 00:10:45.34\00:10:46.68 because you never change your DNA. 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.04 Yeah, and then you're introducing the issue, 00:10:48.08\00:10:50.48 it's almost like you're denying your very existence. 00:10:50.51\00:10:53.68 You know, you're denying who you actually are. 00:10:53.72\00:10:57.02 You know, so it's like you're denying 00:10:57.05\00:10:58.75 your very existence and so it's a confusion, 00:10:58.79\00:11:01.46 a very confusing thing. 00:11:01.49\00:11:03.56 It is. It is. 00:11:03.59\00:11:04.93 And working with people 00:11:04.96\00:11:06.63 that have this kind of confusion 00:11:06.66\00:11:09.26 is a delicate process. 00:11:09.30\00:11:10.67 You know, you can see how certain things could lead 00:11:10.70\00:11:13.80 into transgender tendencies. 00:11:13.84\00:11:16.10 For instance, if maybe the boy as a child 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.38 was a little more a feminine 00:11:20.41\00:11:21.78 than your average rough and tumble boy, 00:11:21.81\00:11:24.25 and he was part of a family system 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.81 that over stereotyped male behavior 00:11:25.85\00:11:28.58 and he was told, "Oh, you know, 00:11:28.62\00:11:30.49 you're acting like a girl, you're just... 00:11:30.52\00:11:32.19 That's the thing that girls do," 00:11:32.22\00:11:33.56 you know, because he liked colors, 00:11:33.59\00:11:34.92 and he liked art, and he liked flowers, 00:11:34.96\00:11:36.76 you know, and he was told that that wasn't right for him. 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.46 You can see 00:11:38.49\00:11:39.83 where he would start to identify himself 00:11:39.86\00:11:42.36 as a girl locked in a boy's body. 00:11:42.40\00:11:44.53 And in fact, I've known people that have been through that. 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.24 Yeah, so there are certain things 00:11:47.27\00:11:48.90 that can lead up to it. 00:11:48.94\00:11:50.27 If the individual's parent 00:11:50.31\00:11:52.51 wanted a child of the other sex, 00:11:52.54\00:11:55.98 what's going to happen internally 00:11:56.01\00:11:58.08 to that child? 00:11:58.11\00:11:59.45 He's going to start to wish potentially anyway 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.78 that he was the other sex. 00:12:01.82\00:12:03.39 I've heard about that happening. 00:12:03.42\00:12:04.85 I've heard about parents putting dress on the boy 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.19 or boy clothes on the girl 00:12:08.22\00:12:10.13 because they wanted another child. 00:12:10.16\00:12:12.96 You know, they're introducing that confusion to the kid. 00:12:12.99\00:12:16.73 There are a lot of developmental factors 00:12:16.77\00:12:19.67 that can lead people down this avenue 00:12:19.70\00:12:22.44 and I think there could be even biological tendencies 00:12:22.47\00:12:24.97 that would set them up for it, 00:12:25.01\00:12:26.34 although we haven't been able to identify them clearly yet. 00:12:26.37\00:12:29.61 But there are definitely a confluence of factors 00:12:29.64\00:12:32.55 that come together to create the struggles 00:12:32.58\00:12:35.05 that people individually suffer through 00:12:35.08\00:12:37.82 and I don't want to minimize those struggles, 00:12:37.85\00:12:39.69 and I don't want to be little anybody, 00:12:39.72\00:12:41.46 no matter what they choose... 00:12:41.49\00:12:42.86 You know, if you've chosen to transition, 00:12:42.89\00:12:44.43 if you're choosing to transition, 00:12:44.46\00:12:45.79 God still loves you. 00:12:45.83\00:12:47.16 He will love you no matter 00:12:47.20\00:12:48.53 what you do for the rest of your life 00:12:48.56\00:12:50.10 because that's just how God is. 00:12:50.13\00:12:51.97 But I don't know 00:12:52.00\00:12:53.34 that transitioning is a solution to the problem. 00:12:53.37\00:12:56.10 I believe that this rush toward transitioning 00:12:56.14\00:12:58.97 is giving people an easy out of a problem 00:12:59.01\00:13:03.45 that is better addressed in counseling, 00:13:03.48\00:13:06.11 it's better addressed in doing the hard work 00:13:06.15\00:13:08.68 of sorting out our motives. 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.95 And of course, the Holy Spirit 00:13:10.99\00:13:12.92 and the presence of Jesus in your life 00:13:12.95\00:13:14.49 and that security you get from knowing 00:13:14.52\00:13:16.73 that you're accepted no matter 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.09 what can really help catalyze that process 00:13:18.13\00:13:21.13 and make it easier to face who we are 00:13:21.16\00:13:23.47 and also to have hope in who we can become in Him. 00:13:23.50\00:13:26.43 Amen. Yeah, yeah. 00:13:26.47\00:13:27.90 I mean, again, it goes back to the fact that 00:13:27.94\00:13:31.07 people can gain the victory by through Christ, 00:13:31.11\00:13:34.48 you know, people can gain that victory 00:13:34.51\00:13:36.41 so there's just so much on this subject. 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.91 So much here, yeah. 00:13:38.95\00:13:40.72 And we're going to have a couple of other programs 00:13:40.75\00:13:42.68 that address different facets of it 00:13:42.72\00:13:44.62 because it is too big of a topic 00:13:44.65\00:13:46.09 to cover in 15 minutes. 00:13:46.12\00:13:47.46 Yes, yes. 00:13:47.49\00:13:48.82 But it's a conversation we need to have. 00:13:48.86\00:13:51.26 Absolutely, I mean, it's a sensitive topic 00:13:51.29\00:13:53.56 but it's definitely one that we need to have. 00:13:53.60\00:13:56.67 And I'm so glad that we are here 00:13:56.70\00:13:59.43 having this conversation 00:13:59.47\00:14:00.94 or we had this conversation because we've got to go 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.47 but if people, if you want more resources, 00:14:03.51\00:14:08.08 then go to IntimateClarity.tv. 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.51 See you next time. 00:14:10.55\00:14:11.88 God bless. 00:14:11.91\00:14:13.25
