00:08:14.36\00:08:15.69 Oh, man, I've never heard a scream like that in my life 00:08:15.72\00:08:18.69 and nothing will calm her down, 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.23 so the nurse literally had me to jump in 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.03 and look for her, 00:08:22.06\00:08:23.83 and they've given her pain meds 00:08:23.87\00:08:25.20 and she was just crying and screaming 00:08:25.23\00:08:27.07 to the top of her lungs. 00:08:27.10\00:08:28.50 And my heart was just aching for my child and it was, 00:08:28.54\00:08:31.84 I couldn't really touch her 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.21 because she has IVs running through her, 00:08:33.24\00:08:34.94 so if I try and touch her, it's just gonna make it worse 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.61 and I just started singing to her 00:08:37.65\00:08:39.28 because I didn't know what else to do and I started 00:08:39.31\00:08:41.72 rubbing her hand, and she didn't want that, 00:08:41.75\00:08:44.05 and the pain meds finally kicked in. 00:08:44.09\00:08:48.16 And she finally calmed down and went back to sleep, 00:08:48.19\00:08:51.59 and after a couple of hours they said, 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.60 you could take her back to the hotel, 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.16 come back in 24 hours, 00:08:55.20\00:08:57.27 and I took her to the hotel, gave her some meds, 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.87 and she went right to sleep. 00:08:59.90\00:09:01.30 Then woke up at 2 o'clock in the morning, really hungry. 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.37 Oh, good. 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.74 Wow! 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.11 What an experience and you're saying that, 00:09:07.14\00:09:08.64 you know, okay, this is it. 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.35 After all the pain, after, you know, 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.61 having to travel so far away, just the two of you, 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.88 the expense of getting plane, you know, airfare, and hotel, 00:09:15.92\00:09:19.95 and the stress of all of that, you're saying, okay, 00:09:19.99\00:09:22.92 this is it. 00:09:22.96\00:09:24.29 God's gonna answer this prayer for total and complete healing. 00:09:24.33\00:09:28.36 What happened then? 00:09:28.40\00:09:30.50 We went back to the doctor in California 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.63 'cause she was out of school for six weeks, 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.80 and it didn't work. 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.57 It didn't work. 00:09:38.61\00:09:39.94 How did you know it wasn't working? 00:09:39.97\00:09:41.98 Doctor told me. Doctor told me. 00:09:42.01\00:09:45.21 And... 00:09:45.25\00:09:46.58 What was that day like for you? 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.02 I felt like I was in hell. 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.79 'Cause I felt like I had prayed enough, 00:09:51.82\00:09:53.52 I had fasted that my child should have been healed, 00:09:53.56\00:09:56.59 I had been a good Christian, 00:09:56.62\00:09:57.96 that's just, that's just me talking. 00:09:57.99\00:09:59.33 Right. 00:09:59.36\00:10:00.70 And I was like, 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.06 "Man, I did everything right 00:10:02.10\00:10:03.43 and it was such hard being on diet." 00:10:03.47\00:10:04.80 We tried everything and, you know, 00:10:04.83\00:10:06.43 put her on herb and nothing was working 00:10:06.47\00:10:08.70 and I wasn't mad with God, but I was just frustrated 00:10:08.74\00:10:12.51 and all I could do was just fall to my knees 00:10:12.54\00:10:14.94 and I just cried. 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.75 I cried a lot and I just prayed in my closet 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.91 and it was just the best thing for me 00:10:19.95\00:10:21.45 and I never cried in front of my kids or my husband 00:10:21.48\00:10:24.35 because I had to deal with my agony with God myself. 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.96 And... 00:10:26.99\00:10:28.32 Must have been really hard. 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.69 It was very hard 00:10:29.72\00:10:31.06 and I think it would have been a little bit better 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43 if Delia had gotten her sight back 00:10:32.46\00:10:33.96 but not necessarily, 00:10:34.00\00:10:35.33 because after she didn't get her sight back, 00:10:35.36\00:10:36.87 she developed glaucoma for the medication 00:10:36.90\00:10:39.27 she was getting. 00:10:39.30\00:10:40.64 Now what is glaucoma? 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.24 It's a disorder that can take your sight away, 00:10:42.27\00:10:44.94 it's like a cataract. 00:10:44.97\00:10:46.31 But in Delia's case, hers is medicine induced, 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.08 so you can't ever get rid of her glaucoma 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.71 and that's the worst part of glaucoma. 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.28 Most people, they can have their cataracts removed. 00:10:53.31\00:10:55.42 In my daughter's case, she can't. 00:10:55.45\00:10:57.25 So let's say her miracle came and her sight came back, 00:10:57.29\00:10:59.99 because of the glaucoma, 00:11:00.02\00:11:01.36 she will never see out of the eye again, 00:11:01.39\00:11:04.03 unless it is a miracle, so we got double whammy. 00:11:04.06\00:11:07.26 How was your, how did your husband take it? 00:11:07.30\00:11:08.90 He didn't come to that appointment. 00:11:08.93\00:11:11.50 I really believe they just, 00:11:11.53\00:11:12.87 and they were just very hard and somebody had to work. 00:11:12.90\00:11:14.84 Right. 00:11:14.87\00:11:16.20 So he just went to work 00:11:16.24\00:11:17.81 and I did the rest of appointments myself, 00:11:17.84\00:11:19.91 by myself. 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.28 How did you, how did you manage to do that? 00:11:21.31\00:11:22.88 How did you, how did you get the strength to do that, Deia? 00:11:22.91\00:11:25.48 I had a college classmate from Oakwood 00:11:25.51\00:11:30.45 and we would talk and she was my sounding board 00:11:30.49\00:11:33.72 'cause she had a child with special needs 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.72 and she introduced me to another mom 00:11:35.76\00:11:37.59 who has special needs 00:11:37.63\00:11:38.96 and I would have to talk to them 00:11:38.99\00:11:40.60 before I went to the appointments, 00:11:40.63\00:11:42.16 after I went to appointments, 00:11:42.20\00:11:43.53 and I would call my Aunt Betty quite a bit 00:11:43.57\00:11:45.87 and, and my mother, and they just got me through, 00:11:45.90\00:11:50.31 and lots of prayer. 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.27 Lots of prayer. 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.91 So then you got the news about the glaucoma and, 00:11:53.94\00:11:57.55 so what kinds of treatment did you start doing with Delia? 00:11:57.58\00:12:01.35 We just did the patching again. 00:12:01.38\00:12:03.89 There was no other treatment that was available at the time 00:12:03.92\00:12:06.92 and she's still on the medication 00:12:06.96\00:12:08.39 for the glaucoma. 00:12:08.42\00:12:09.79 She started having some other health issues 00:12:09.82\00:12:11.56 where the pressure in the transferred eye 00:12:11.59\00:12:13.56 was getting very high 00:12:13.60\00:12:14.93 to the point that she could have a stroke, 00:12:14.96\00:12:17.00 and I'm at home one evening, the doctor calls and says, 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.23 "I need to see Delia first thing in the morning." 00:12:19.27\00:12:21.47 She started doing school visits. 00:12:21.50\00:12:23.57 The doctor? 00:12:23.61\00:12:24.94 The doctor did 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.31 because they couldn't get that pressure down, 00:12:26.34\00:12:28.04 so then I had to start praying about that, 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.64 because if your pressure gets too high, 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.21 then the transplant can reject, 00:12:31.25\00:12:33.92 and I just remember being on the floor, 00:12:33.95\00:12:36.82 and I was like, "Oh, my God, 00:12:36.85\00:12:38.55 please do not put my child back in the hospital, 00:12:38.59\00:12:40.89 in Missouri again." 00:12:40.92\00:12:42.29 And during this time period, 00:12:42.32\00:12:43.66 the insurance bills started coming in 00:12:43.69\00:12:45.19 and I realized the insurance is not gonna pay for anything. 00:12:45.23\00:12:50.40 Anything? Nothing? Anything. 00:12:50.43\00:12:52.07 And I was like, "Oh, my Lord, 00:12:52.10\00:12:54.14 how are we gonna get through this. 00:12:54.17\00:12:56.27 We can't afford to pay $200,000, $300,000, $400,000 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.57 for her surgery. 00:12:59.61\00:13:00.94 We got, we were gifted the plane tickets, 00:13:00.98\00:13:03.24 for two of us, 00:13:03.28\00:13:04.61 but we still had to pay for my husband to come, 00:13:04.65\00:13:06.45 her brother to come. 00:13:06.48\00:13:07.82 We had to pay for our hotel. We had to pay for our meals. 00:13:07.85\00:13:10.29 When we went into the hospital, 00:13:10.32\00:13:11.65 nothing was given to her for free. 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.72 So everything was out of pocket 00:13:13.76\00:13:15.92 and you're talking about a huge financial strain. 00:13:15.96\00:13:18.66 We had a child who was very normal 00:13:18.69\00:13:20.96 and within a snap of a finger, she was visually impaired, 00:13:21.00\00:13:25.10 and we weren't getting any type of services, 00:13:25.13\00:13:27.24 and so we weren't getting any type of financial help 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.21 or any other help available for her. 00:13:30.24\00:13:32.91 Or at her school? 00:13:32.94\00:13:34.28 At her school, and we were struggling financially 00:13:34.31\00:13:37.81 because of the surgery. 00:13:37.85\00:13:39.75 And I went into professional mode, 00:13:39.78\00:13:43.08 and I started making some calls 00:13:43.12\00:13:44.75 and found out there were services 00:13:44.79\00:13:46.15 through the state I could get for my daughter, 00:13:46.19\00:13:48.02 but she would have to attend public school. 00:13:48.06\00:13:51.06 And I made a call. 00:13:51.09\00:13:52.43 To take her out of her school. 00:13:52.46\00:13:53.80 I had to take her out of Adventist Christian Education 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.40 and put her into public school for her to get the services 00:13:56.43\00:13:58.90 that she needed in order to succeed in life. 00:13:58.93\00:14:00.94 Wow! 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.30 And that's where she will be 00:14:02.34\00:14:03.67 until she graduates from high school 00:14:03.71\00:14:05.11 unless something changes. 00:14:05.14\00:14:06.47 So what kind of services is she receiving at school now? 00:14:06.51\00:14:09.71 She gets Braille services. 00:14:09.74\00:14:11.51 They've taught her how to use her cane 00:14:11.55\00:14:12.98 which is a white thing with red strips on it. 00:14:13.01\00:14:15.22 She also has a CCTV machine 00:14:15.25\00:14:18.09 which is close-captioned television. 00:14:18.12\00:14:20.16 She has a Google Chrome book 00:14:20.19\00:14:21.52 and her class was outfitted with a life size board 00:14:21.56\00:14:25.26 and it allows her to see all of her teachers' work 00:14:25.29\00:14:28.03 in very large print. 00:14:28.06\00:14:29.73 All of her textbooks are online. 00:14:29.76\00:14:32.53 And she's able to enlarge them. 00:14:32.57\00:14:34.04 All of her State tests that she has to take, 00:14:34.07\00:14:36.37 they are very large print, 00:14:36.40\00:14:40.28 so everything is compatible for her now, 00:14:40.31\00:14:42.64 but I had to fight for that too, 00:14:42.68\00:14:44.01 it didn't happen very quickly. 00:14:44.05\00:14:45.71 So you had to go through the whole IEP, 00:14:45.75\00:14:47.72 The Individualized Education Program? 00:14:47.75\00:14:49.78 I had to get a IEP, I had to get an advocate, 00:14:49.82\00:14:51.42 and the advocate had to get a disability attorney, 00:14:51.45\00:14:55.06 and that's how we got the help that she needed. 00:14:55.09\00:14:58.06 Wow! 00:14:58.09\00:14:59.46 Well, if it's okay with you, 00:14:59.49\00:15:01.06 we would love to be able to meet little Delia. 00:15:01.10\00:15:04.23 Most definitely. 00:15:04.27\00:15:05.60 And to hear from her point of view what it's been like. 00:15:05.63\00:15:08.40 Okay. 00:15:08.44\00:15:09.77 Delia, she's gonna come on to the set right now. 00:15:09.80\00:15:12.61 So happy to have her. 00:15:12.64\00:15:16.34 Thrilled to have her come here from California. 00:15:16.38\00:15:18.95 Hey, pumpkin. 00:15:18.98\00:15:21.38 Yes, okay. 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.59 All right, my dear, are you comfortable? 00:15:23.62\00:15:26.15 Okay. 00:15:26.19\00:15:27.52 Matter of fact, I was thinking... 00:15:27.56\00:15:29.82 Deia?
