and in this dream

one time I was in the hospital,

and I was having
this wonderful dream.

And you said that... I
got waken up by the nurse.

Now, what do you do to...

You know, what
do you do when your,

when your dream
gets interrupted?

I know what I try to do.

I try to go back to sleep,

to get the rest of the
dream and it never works out.

It never works out.

And it's frustrating when

someone wakes you
up out of your dream,

when life wakes

But it's even more frustrating

when the dreams we have for life

are awakened dreams
are interrupted by life.

When the things that we hope for

and we long for in life,

we just can't seem to have them.

And I feel like all of
us have awakened dreams.

We have daydreams.

Dreams of things we want to do

and things we want
to accomplish in life

or even as parents, we
have dreams for our children.

Sure.

Things that we
want them to accomplish

and just go on in life.

And just seems
like there are times

when life interrupts our dreams.

So what do most
people do when that happens?

You know, when our
dreams get interrupted by life,

we substitute something
else for the lofty things

that we were going after.
00:03:26.30\00:03:28.00
Instead of going
after big dreams,

we begin settling
for smaller things.

We begin just living
life at a lower level.

We make a substitute.
00:03:37.01\00:03:38.58
You know, it's
like if you can't find
00:03:38.61\00:03:40.05
what you're
really looking for water.
00:03:40.08\00:03:42.18
Sometimes we'll
substitute it for some drink
00:03:42.22\00:03:44.35
that may have lesser value.
00:03:44.39\00:03:46.19
Like soda.
That's what we do. Yeah.
00:03:46.22\00:03:48.46
And there's a story in the Bible
00:03:48.49\00:03:49.82
actually about a lady
00:03:49.86\00:03:51.49
who had big dreams
for her life, I'm sure.
00:03:51.53\00:03:54.33
But now it started
settling for something less
00:03:54.36\00:03:57.00
and had substituted
00:03:57.03\00:03:58.50
for something a
whole lot lesser.
00:03:58.53\00:04:00.80
And Jesus interrupts
this, this substitute,
00:04:00.84\00:04:03.77
this settling of life
00:04:03.81\00:04:05.57
and begins to
awaken a dream in her.
00:04:05.61\00:04:08.34
It's found in John 4.
00:04:08.38\00:04:10.11
John 4? Yep.
00:04:10.15\00:04:11.48
And it's the story that we call
00:04:11.51\00:04:12.85
"the woman at the well" story.

Okay.

That Jesus now comes in

and begins to
awaken in her dream

that she had before.
00:04:19.22\00:04:20.72
It's John 4.

And here's how Jesus
awakens that dream in verse 7,

He says to her
simply give me a drink.

Well, it's just a
simple line, "Give me a drink."
00:04:28.23\00:04:30.73
And here it is this lady
was coming to the well at noon
00:04:30.77\00:04:35.10
when no one else is
supposed to be there.
00:04:35.14\00:04:37.04
She comes to this well
expecting no one to be there,
00:04:37.07\00:04:41.18
expecting no one
to, to interrupt her
00:04:41.21\00:04:44.31
and to talk to her.
00:04:44.35\00:04:45.68
And Jesus has a plan to stop her
00:04:45.71\00:04:49.02
and to say to
her, "Give me a drink."
00:04:49.05\00:04:51.92
Now, to you and I
that's, that's no big deal.

But this lady
begins to dialogue.
00:04:55.42\00:04:56.96
And she says to Jesus,
who's a Jew, she's a Samaritan.
00:04:56.99\00:05:00.80
She says, "It's not the custom
00:05:00.83\00:05:03.23
that a Jew would ask
a Samaritan to drink."
00:05:03.26\00:05:05.43
Now, now why are you
having this dialogue with me.
00:05:05.47\00:05:08.54
And Jesus says
these interesting words.
00:05:08.57\00:05:10.41
"If you only knew who
was offering you this drink,
00:05:10.44\00:05:14.34
if you only
knew the gift of God,
00:05:14.38\00:05:16.21
you would ask me give me a drink
00:05:16.24\00:05:19.01
and I would give
you Living Water."
00:05:19.05\00:05:22.48
Jesus says, "If you only
knew who you were talking to.
00:05:22.52\00:05:25.22
If you only knew
what I had for you,
00:05:25.25\00:05:28.52
you would be
clamoring for what I have.
00:05:28.56\00:05:32.69
You would, you would run to
me and you would ask me for it
00:05:32.73\00:05:35.60
because what I have

is what you've been
looking for all along."

So what happens next?

I mean, so now, it's interesting

the woman begins
to try to tell Jesus

this interesting
thing, in verse 11.

I think it's something we
all tell God from time to time.

She says in verse 11,
00:05:52.45\00:05:53.78
"Sir, you have
nothing to draw water with
00:05:53.82\00:05:57.35
and the well is deep."
00:05:57.39\00:05:58.89
She says,
"Jesus, I hear this offer
00:05:58.92\00:06:01.69
that you want to give me water.
00:06:01.72\00:06:03.19
You want to satisfy me.
00:06:03.22\00:06:05.19
But as I look at you,
00:06:05.23\00:06:07.06
You have nothing
to draw water from
00:06:07.10\00:06:09.70
and the well is deep."
00:06:09.73\00:06:11.07
And in our lives
there are parallels.
00:06:11.10\00:06:13.13
We sometimes tell God,
"God, I see your offer of life.
00:06:13.17\00:06:16.81
I see your offer of blessing me.
00:06:16.84\00:06:18.97
But you don't
understand my issues
00:06:19.01\00:06:21.11
because my pain is deep
and my issues run deeper."

You don't have what I
need because what I've been,

I've been dealing with
God is a whole lot deeper

than what you're able to handle.

Sometimes life can
just be overwhelming.

it possible for God

to be able to address this
particular issue in my life.

I mean, let's, let's
think about some of the issues

where we feel
lonely, for instance.

And we think, "God, you're
offering me all of these things

that can satisfy me
but after I'm done praying,

I'm still alone.

After I'm done praying,

I'm still going home
to a house by myself.

You don't have anything
to draw water with and my,

You know, we say, "God, I
know all of these solutions

that we've talked about.

But maybe that was
good when I was a child.

dealing with small problems

like someone didn't want
to play with me at school

but now I'm dealing
with grown up issues.

Right.

I've dealt with abuse
some people are thinking,

I've dealt with rejection,

I've dealt with
some of life's hurts

and I've even
inflicted things on myself.
00:07:30.18\00:07:32.65
God, you have
nothing to draw water with
00:07:32.68\00:07:35.15
and my well runs deep.
00:07:35.18\00:07:37.55
And we say,
"God, I've been tired
00:07:37.59\00:07:39.89
of trying all the
things that people say,
00:07:39.92\00:07:42.82
you should try a
spiritual people.
00:07:42.86\00:07:44.53
I've been tired of, you
know, naming it and claiming it
00:07:44.56\00:07:47.80
and reaching up my
hands and grabbing it,
00:07:47.83\00:07:49.73
and God, I don't see
it because maybe it's me.
00:07:49.76\00:07:52.63
Maybe my issues
run too deep for God.
00:07:52.67\00:07:56.14
And I think like that
woman, sometimes we think,

"Jesus, I see the offer,
00:07:58.47\00:08:00.64
but maybe I'm beyond the
point that You can help me."

That is so true.
That is absolutely true.

Yeah.

I don't know, I think, in
all of us as human beings,

there is a part of us that feels

that maybe my issues
are too deep for God.

I've felt that way.

I felt, "Maybe
God, I'm too messed up.

I have too much baggage."

We've all felt, "Maybe
God, you can help other people

but my well runs too deep.

And God, you can't
get to the bottom of this.

You can't fix this."

And this woman is telling Jesus,

"You have nothing
to draw water with

and this well runs deep.

And then Jesus says to her...

She says to Him,
00:08:42.72\00:08:44.05
"Are You greater
than our fathers?

Are you greater
than all the people
00:08:45.45\00:08:46.79
who thought they could help us?"

And then Jesus says to her,
00:08:48.36\00:08:49.72
"Everyone who drinks, verse 13,
00:08:49.76\00:08:52.06
of this water
will be thirsty again.
00:08:52.09\00:08:54.80
But whoever drinks of the water
00:08:54.83\00:08:56.36
I will give him
will never be thirsty.
00:08:56.40\00:08:59.23
The water I will give him will
become in him a spring of water
00:08:59.27\00:09:03.37
welling up to eternal life.
00:09:03.41\00:09:04.84
Jesus says. "Here's
what I'm going to do.

You come to this
well to get water.
00:09:07.61\00:09:10.35
But when you come you go home
00:09:10.38\00:09:12.15
and you exhaust
what you've taken home.
00:09:12.18\00:09:15.12
You come to a
mountain and you worship
00:09:15.15\00:09:16.99
but when you go home,
that experience is gone."

Jesus says, "I'm
going to make this personal.

I'll put the well inside of you.
00:09:23.22\00:09:25.39
I got to tell you this.

You telling this story

is really
touching my soul so much.

And it's true, you know,

I don't, I
don't think of anybody

who's lived life long enough,

you're gonna have some
serious disappointments.

You're gonna have some things
that you feel like you've,

you know, that you
felt that, that, you know,

you haven't quite
made, met the mark.

But you're saying that God is

able to give us
something that is,

that will supply
that thirst in us.

That's right.

Because all of
us have a longing,

that only God can supply.

We may run after other things

but God is the only one
that can supply that longing.

And at our core level, there is,

sometimes that we say,

"I'm not satisfied.

I have been coming to
this well for the lady.

Well, I've been
doing this experience.

I've been trying this thing.
And I'm still not satisfied."

And Jesus says, "All
of the things you try,

they're not
personal but what I'm saying,

I want to come, put
the well inside of you.

I want to give you something
that not only satisfies you

but overflows out of you."

So we don't have
to go to the well.

church to get filled up,

And we're glad that
the church becomes a place

where people can find
God and experience God.

But God is saying,
"I want to do something

even greater than that.

I don't want you to
come to religious services

each week empty."

"And get filled up and
go out through the week

and get exhausted
and, and emptied into life

and then come back."

God is saying, "I want
you to live life on full.

And then you come back to us,

what would happen if everyone

received the well on the inside.

And we all came together,

what kind of experience
we would have as believers,

as worshippers, as human beings

when all of us who
are living life on full

because God is
supplying us on the inside.

We're connected
with others who are full

and we're just
overflowing in love and just,

just the grace of
God is flowing out

from us to others.

What would happen to us?

We would have one great
wave that we could ride a wave.

Now, what's
interesting in this story is,

Jesus has just
awakened a desire.

that dream back again.

And she says to Him,

this water in verse 15.

She's like, ''Okay, I got it.

The dreams that
I've had as a girl,

the dreams that
I've been longing for,
00:12:37.29\00:12:39.02
I now see it.
00:12:39.05\00:12:40.39
Give me this water. I want that.

I don't want to keep
coming back to this well.

Give me this water."

And you would think
that Jesus will say,

"Okay, here's the water."

But something
interesting happens.

In verse 16, He says,

"Go, call your
husband and come here."

Now come on Jesus
after all of this time,

you're trying to tell
us how good the water is.

Sell her on the
benefits of this."

"You've been
marketing this water.

I mean, you've
packaged it so well,

that she says, I want to buy it.

the subject to say,

"Go, call your husband."

I mean, that's like,

marketing you don't do that.

You make the sale

complete the transaction.

the subject and says,

today's culture like

people don't want you
to get in your business.

They don't want you to
get up-close and personal.

They had so much strife
between them and Samaritans

Now, He probably is
legitimately hungry.

So Jesus sends
them away to get food.

with this lady at the well.
