Alarming. 00:01:33.82\00:01:35.62 As a former teacher, 00:01:35.66\00:01:36.99 I can attach that those are facts. 00:01:37.03\00:01:40.56 Those are facts. Yes. 00:01:40.60\00:01:41.93 I've experienced watching children in poverty 00:01:41.96\00:01:45.90 in inner city as a teacher. 00:01:45.93\00:01:48.80 And just seeing the facts 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.31 that poverty have on kids is alarming. 00:01:51.34\00:01:55.01 You know, I was looking back here on the internet 00:01:55.04\00:01:57.08 and it looks like there's been 50 years of the war on poverty. 00:01:57.11\00:02:01.45 It started with Lyndon B. Johnson. 00:02:01.48\00:02:02.82 Yes. 00:02:02.85\00:02:04.19 And then going back to what you're saying 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.52 about the high school, okay, and kids and education. 00:02:06.55\00:02:10.03 Did you know that every... 00:02:10.06\00:02:11.66 According to the internet 1.2 million students 00:02:11.69\00:02:14.40 drop out of high school in United States alone 00:02:14.43\00:02:17.40 and that every 26 seconds over 7,000 drop out a day. 00:02:17.43\00:02:24.37 That's mind-boggling, isn't it? 00:02:24.41\00:02:26.51 Yes, it is. Yes, it is. 00:02:26.54\00:02:28.68 You know, my experience as a teacher, 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.41 the kids are dropping out for some reasons 00:02:31.45\00:02:34.45 that are not being discussed. 00:02:34.48\00:02:36.25 One of them is the effect that poverty have on children. 00:02:36.28\00:02:39.25 Right. 00:02:39.29\00:02:40.62 It kills their self-esteem, it makes them... 00:02:40.66\00:02:46.13 I'll give you an example. 00:02:46.16\00:02:47.93 When I was young, 00:02:47.96\00:02:49.30 I was a kid that grew up in poverty. 00:02:49.33\00:02:51.57 Sometimes I was so concerned about the hole 00:02:51.60\00:02:54.67 that was in my pants 00:02:54.70\00:02:56.04 that I could not focus at school. 00:02:56.07\00:02:58.04 And so when you can't focus at school, 00:02:58.07\00:02:59.77 you fall behind, and when you get behind, 00:02:59.81\00:03:03.08 then there's a whole another slew of problems 00:03:03.11\00:03:05.35 that come with that, 00:03:05.38\00:03:06.72 then you're picked on or you're talked about 00:03:06.75\00:03:08.65 because you're not making a grade 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.09 or you're not smart and so it just... 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.46 It's a snowball effect and it all stems with poverty. 00:03:13.49\00:03:17.46 Now, Denis, I Googled Sugar Ditch Hill, 00:03:17.49\00:03:20.83 okay? 00:03:20.86\00:03:22.20 And I saw that some years ago there was 60 minutes program. 00:03:22.23\00:03:26.47 That's correct. Are you aware of that? 00:03:26.50\00:03:28.34 Oh, yes, I am. 00:03:28.37\00:03:29.90 Sugar Ditch made national news in 1985. 00:03:29.94\00:03:33.88 Not only was it a 60 minutes program, 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.98 it was a Time Magazine, 00:03:36.01\00:03:38.25 a slew of reports about that area. 00:03:38.28\00:03:42.32 It was exposed as the poorest, poorest place in America. 00:03:42.35\00:03:46.15 The poorest place in America. That's where you grew up? 00:03:46.19\00:03:49.12 And that's where I was born, yes. 00:03:49.16\00:03:50.93 Were you around when they did that program 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.09 or it was any of your relatives? 00:03:53.13\00:03:55.13 We were still around. 00:03:55.16\00:03:57.10 We did live on Sugar Ditch at the time 00:03:57.13\00:04:00.34 it made national news 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.10 but my mom is in some of the footages. 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.84 Oh, really? Yes. 00:04:04.87\00:04:06.21 So exactly, what was Sugar Ditch? 00:04:06.24\00:04:08.08 What was that? 00:04:08.11\00:04:09.44 Oh, wow! It was a... 00:04:09.48\00:04:11.91 Basically it was a sewer ditch. A sewer ditch. 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.88 A sewer ditch that ran along 00:04:14.92\00:04:18.25 and had a row of shack houses next to it. 00:04:18.29\00:04:22.49 Those shack houses did not have any indoor plumbing 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.56 or running water inside of them. 00:04:25.59\00:04:27.96 And people used to use the ditch 00:04:28.00\00:04:29.96 as a place to discard their waste. 00:04:30.00\00:04:33.80 That's shocking. Yes. 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.47 And you grew up with that? Yes. 00:04:35.50\00:04:37.57 So where people... 00:04:37.61\00:04:39.27 It almost sounds like, no offence, 00:04:39.31\00:04:40.91 it sounds kind of third world. 00:04:40.94\00:04:43.31 Are you saying, I won't say third world, 00:04:43.35\00:04:45.05 but really just poor. 00:04:45.08\00:04:46.85 Well, Reverend Jesse Jackson put it. 00:04:46.88\00:04:49.18 He quoted and said that it was America's Ethiopia. 00:04:49.22\00:04:54.79 So how... I mean, look at you now though. 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.26 Okay, this is... Okay. 00:04:57.29\00:04:58.63 so now we really want to hear, 00:04:58.66\00:05:00.80 what did you, what happened? 00:05:00.83\00:05:03.47 In the whole topic of not giving up, 00:05:03.50\00:05:05.97 how did you get from there to where you are right now, 00:05:06.00\00:05:08.47 Oakwood University graduate, playwright, 00:05:08.50\00:05:11.61 you have plays that are out, you're professional singer, 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.28 you've written a book. 00:05:14.31\00:05:15.71 How did you get from abject poverty 00:05:15.74\00:05:20.28 living next to a Sugar Ditch to today? 00:05:20.32\00:05:25.05 Two words, God's grace. God's grace. 00:05:25.09\00:05:27.66 God's grace. 00:05:27.69\00:05:29.42 You know, my story started before Sugar Ditch. 00:05:29.46\00:05:32.83 My story started with my mom, 00:05:32.86\00:05:34.96 my mom, I'm the youngest of 12 and my mother was, 00:05:35.00\00:05:38.83 she was a diabetic when she became pregnant with me. 00:05:38.87\00:05:43.07 After having 11 children, 00:05:43.10\00:05:44.51 the physician told her that she would not go full term, 00:05:44.54\00:05:48.31 and that I will be a miscarriage, 00:05:48.34\00:05:50.58 but she prayed over me in her womb. 00:05:50.61\00:05:53.65 And she said that after I was the born, 00:05:53.68\00:05:55.98 the story was given to me later. 00:05:56.02\00:05:57.95 She said, after I was born the doctor told her, 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.59 this was probably her healthiest baby 00:06:00.62\00:06:02.56 she has ever had. 00:06:02.59\00:06:03.93 Really? Yes. 00:06:03.96\00:06:05.29 and so the challenge started before I came here, 00:06:05.33\00:06:09.00 but once again God's grace. 00:06:09.03\00:06:12.27 We lived on Sugar Ditch. 00:06:12.30\00:06:14.24 When I left the hospital, that's where we went, 00:06:14.27\00:06:16.57 and that's what we call home. 00:06:16.60\00:06:18.24 You could have died though 00:06:18.27\00:06:19.61 with that kind of an environment? 00:06:19.64\00:06:20.98 Yes, yes, 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.34 the death rate for young babies at that time 00:06:22.38\00:06:27.72 was really high. 00:06:27.75\00:06:29.95 It was a place that was full of infections 00:06:29.98\00:06:32.92 and all kinds of diseases but God's grace. 00:06:32.95\00:06:36.96 God's grace, so... 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.33 God's grace. What happened? 00:06:38.36\00:06:39.69 You grew up obviously... 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.06 Well. What was that like? 00:06:41.10\00:06:42.43 Yes, it was very challenging 00:06:42.46\00:06:45.23 because my dad was 69 when I was born and... 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.17 Sixty nine. 00:06:48.20\00:06:49.54 Sixty nine years of age 00:06:49.57\00:06:50.91 and when we move from Sugar Ditch, 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.81 we was able to get off Sugar Ditch 00:06:52.84\00:06:54.18 into a low income house some shortly thereafter, 00:06:54.21\00:06:59.08 may be four, five months later. 00:06:59.11\00:07:00.98 Was that a government special program 00:07:01.02\00:07:03.28 that was kind of targeted to that area 00:07:03.32\00:07:04.99 where you're able to get out? 00:07:05.02\00:07:06.35 Oh, thank God for that. 00:07:06.39\00:07:07.72 It was. It was... 00:07:07.76\00:07:09.09 My dad died three years later. Oh, I'm sorry. 00:07:09.12\00:07:12.79 So the challenge was really ongoing. 00:07:12.83\00:07:15.76 But it prefers us back to the title, 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.13 "Giving up was not an option." 00:07:18.17\00:07:19.93 I had a praying mother 00:07:19.97\00:07:21.77 and she prayed over her children 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.54 and she did the best she could. 00:07:24.57\00:07:26.44 And as the youngest, you know, I sit and I watched dad, 00:07:26.47\00:07:29.74 and as I grew up, 00:07:29.78\00:07:31.75 I learned from her faith in God to have faith. 00:07:31.78\00:07:36.52 And I learned from her to trust God on my own. 00:07:36.55\00:07:40.76 Wow! 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.12 And so with God's help, 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.19 he brought me from, you know, 00:07:44.23\00:07:49.03 lower education 'cause the school we were, 00:07:49.06\00:07:52.07 to the school we attended in that county, 00:07:52.10\00:07:55.10 not only was it the lowest, 00:07:55.14\00:07:57.77 the poorest county I'm sorry in America. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.01 It was... 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.54 I'm still wrapping my mind around that. 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.65 It's the poorest county in all of the entire United States... 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.98 United States. 00:08:07.02\00:08:08.35 So what was the education like for black children? 00:08:08.38\00:08:11.49 It was the same. 00:08:11.52\00:08:12.95 It was the poorest education system 00:08:12.99\00:08:15.32 in the United States. 00:08:15.36\00:08:16.69 So how did you get through high school 00:08:16.73\00:08:19.19 and then even get to college if your education was so poor? 00:08:19.23\00:08:24.83 That's a long story but I can tell you 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.77 that my mom took sick when I was about 14. 00:08:27.80\00:08:33.07 We had to move to the city of Memphis 00:08:33.11\00:08:35.48 for her to have healthcare. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.45 Okay. 00:08:37.48\00:08:38.81 It allowed me to enroll in a Memphis City School. 00:08:38.85\00:08:42.32 I was extremely-- 00:08:42.35\00:08:44.35 I was gonna ask you, what was that like for you 00:08:44.39\00:08:46.39 as a student coming in? 00:08:46.42\00:08:47.79 Very challenging, very challenging. 00:08:47.82\00:08:49.19 What kinds of things that you go through? 00:08:49.22\00:08:51.46 Oh, man, 00:08:51.49\00:08:54.33 you know, being poor, you live in poor areas, 00:08:54.36\00:08:59.20 and you have to deal with the elements of the poor areas. 00:08:59.23\00:09:02.14 So you have to fight gangs, 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.67 you have to fight drug dealers to get to school. 00:09:04.71\00:09:07.48 That was once you came to Memphis? 00:09:07.51\00:09:08.84 Once I came to Memphis, yes. 00:09:08.88\00:09:10.21 So you went from the lowest county 00:09:10.25\00:09:13.11 as far as poverty in the United States 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.92 straight into a dangerous area. 00:09:15.95\00:09:18.05 That's correct. That's correct. Wow! 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.82 But at the time the community school 00:09:20.86\00:09:23.09 was shut down and they were busting us 00:09:23.12\00:09:25.23 to a suburban area in Memphis. 00:09:25.26\00:09:28.16 Oh, my goodness. 00:09:28.20\00:09:30.13 So that school... 00:09:30.17\00:09:31.90 All right, so you went from poverty to gang violence 00:09:31.93\00:09:35.57 to then in a busted up to segregated schools 00:09:35.60\00:09:39.17 at the time. 00:09:39.21\00:09:40.54 Well, it wasn't a segregated school, 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.91 it was a suburban school 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.55 which had some diversity. 00:09:44.58\00:09:49.45 But it was about 70 percent white, Caucasian or. 00:09:49.48\00:09:51.65 And it just, the love of the education was high. 00:09:51.69\00:09:56.86 So I'm extremely behind 00:09:56.89\00:09:58.99 and I'm playing catch-up but it was God's grace. 00:09:59.03\00:10:03.26 He gave me two set of great guidance counselors. 00:10:03.30\00:10:07.14 Oh, really? Yes. 00:10:07.17\00:10:08.50 They work with me and they help me, 00:10:08.54\00:10:11.51 they put me on a plan to help me graduate. 00:10:11.54\00:10:14.08 So you went to Memphis when you were in high school? 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.51 Yes. 00:10:16.54\00:10:17.88 So you came from... 00:10:17.91\00:10:21.18 The poorest place in America was in Tunica, Mississippi, 00:10:21.22\00:10:24.45 the poorest educational system to Memphis, 00:10:24.49\00:10:28.42 to be embossed with suburban area in Memphis. 00:10:28.46\00:10:31.03 Outside of your neighborhood. Outside of my neighborhood. 00:10:31.06\00:10:33.19 Having to come back home 00:10:33.23\00:10:34.56 and then fight with the drug dealers and the... 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.63 That's correct... 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.00 Lord Jesus. Wow! 00:12:49.30\00:12:51.27 And so, you know, 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.93 she used to give me the stories about college, 00:12:52.97\00:12:55.80 you know, and I used to get excited about it. 00:12:55.84\00:12:59.17 And, you know, I looked at the community 00:12:59.21\00:13:01.84 and I look where we were. 00:13:01.88\00:13:03.55 And I always felt and thought to myself 00:13:03.58\00:13:06.48 there's something greater, 00:13:06.51\00:13:07.85 there's something better than this, you know, 00:13:07.88\00:13:10.59 and that I was going to not be denied that. 00:13:10.62\00:13:15.29 You were not gonna be denied. 00:13:15.32\00:13:16.86 Not gonna be denied... 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.33 I like that attitude. 00:13:18.36\00:13:19.83 So did you play sports? 00:13:19.86\00:13:21.80 I did, I play sports. 00:13:21.83\00:13:25.10 Well, I didn't play that much in high school 00:13:25.13\00:13:27.64 because of everything else was going on. 00:13:27.67\00:13:30.81 You had to go home. 00:13:30.84\00:13:32.17 I had to go home.
