Welcome to Issues and Answers. 00:00:28.12\00:00:29.59 Today we're going to talk about issues and conflicts 00:00:29.62\00:00:32.23 of youth in today's society. 00:00:32.26\00:00:34.30 And what the church can do to rescue 00:00:34.33\00:00:36.36 and save our young people. 00:00:36.40\00:00:38.43 Our guest today is Richard Valenzuela. 00:00:38.47\00:00:40.74 Richard is President 00:00:40.77\00:00:42.10 of Leadership Diversity Institute, 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.07 the former Education Director for Silicon Valley FACES, 00:00:44.11\00:00:47.48 former Executive Director and President of Anytown USA, 00:00:47.51\00:00:51.28 International Council of Christians and Jews. 00:00:51.31\00:00:53.58 Internationally recognized for as a diversity specialist. 00:00:53.62\00:00:57.25 He was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement 00:00:57.29\00:01:00.02 and now consults regularly with schools, colleges 00:01:00.06\00:01:02.99 and universities across the US. 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.03 Richard is going to share his life experiences 00:01:05.06\00:01:07.56 and working with over 00:01:07.60\00:01:08.93 10,000 young people across the country. 00:01:08.96\00:01:12.20 Welcome to the program, Richard. 00:01:12.23\00:01:13.64 My pleasure. So glad that you could make it. 00:01:13.67\00:01:16.94 So what's happening today with our young people? 00:01:16.97\00:01:22.14 Well, you know, my experience comes from working with 00:01:22.18\00:01:26.51 what I call out of classroom education 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.38 which is doing camps and retreats and workshops 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.35 and we'll get more into that later. 00:01:31.39\00:01:32.72 But what I've observed 00:01:32.75\00:01:35.02 and what I've learned from these kids, 00:01:35.06\00:01:36.56 thousands of kids are some of the major issues 00:01:36.59\00:01:38.93 that are constantly coming up, 00:01:38.96\00:01:40.90 constantly affecting their lives. 00:01:40.93\00:01:44.37 And one of the big ones is of course suicide. 00:01:44.40\00:01:48.60 Teen suicide is at epidemic proportions right now. 00:01:48.64\00:01:52.51 I was working with one school in California, 00:01:52.54\00:01:54.41 they had up to four suicides in one year. 00:01:54.44\00:01:57.45 And it made national news and it just keeps happening. 00:01:57.48\00:02:00.75 You know, when we take the kids up to camp, 00:02:00.78\00:02:02.32 they begin to reveal, 00:02:02.35\00:02:04.12 many of them think about suicide. 00:02:04.15\00:02:06.89 A lot of them attempted 00:02:06.92\00:02:08.26 and then thank God only a few succeed 00:02:08.29\00:02:10.59 but it still, it's happening too much. 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.96 How did you get involved in working with young people? 00:02:12.99\00:02:15.53 Have you always, 00:02:15.56\00:02:17.13 has it's always been something that you've done, 00:02:17.17\00:02:19.20 do you have children of your own for example? 00:02:19.23\00:02:20.64 Oh, yeah. 00:02:20.67\00:02:22.00 I only have five children they're all boys except four, 00:02:22.04\00:02:25.47 four fantastic daughters and one son 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.91 and now have eight grandkids. 00:02:27.94\00:02:30.31 But I've always had a passion for youth, 00:02:30.35\00:02:32.88 I worked in student government high school 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.82 and college and it's just, 00:02:34.85\00:02:37.52 it's just something that I wanted to do. 00:02:37.55\00:02:39.62 You know, it kept directing me, 00:02:39.65\00:02:41.29 I keep being directed to human relations 00:02:41.32\00:02:43.59 and even though at one time I wanted to go into business, 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.16 I ended up in the nonprofit field 00:02:46.19\00:02:47.90 and in education. 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.10 So that's basically the interest is just working 00:02:50.13\00:02:52.97 and changing and reaching these kids 00:02:53.00\00:02:56.17 because they've got, 00:02:56.20\00:02:57.54 lot of them have a lot of problems. 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.24 So what were some of your first experiences 00:02:59.27\00:03:01.44 in working with young people? 00:03:01.48\00:03:05.85 You said right out of college 00:03:05.88\00:03:07.35 you started working with young people? 00:03:07.38\00:03:09.12 Even before I went to college, 00:03:09.15\00:03:10.49 I got invited to this one camp program 00:03:10.52\00:03:14.12 and which was called Anytown. 00:03:14.16\00:03:16.42 And from there I thought, gee, 00:03:16.46\00:03:18.73 this is fantastic, we're educating, 00:03:18.76\00:03:21.30 we're not necessarily just marching or protesting, 00:03:21.33\00:03:23.77 this was in the middle of Civil Rights in 1965. 00:03:23.80\00:03:26.87 And so I thought this is an answer 00:03:26.90\00:03:29.57 to some degree of how to reach kids before 00:03:29.60\00:03:33.41 it becomes promise, 00:03:33.44\00:03:34.78 especially when you're dealing with prejudice too and racism, 00:03:34.81\00:03:37.25 bias and all that. 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.71 It was a good time to work with them 00:03:39.75\00:03:41.45 and so I volunteered for seven years 00:03:41.48\00:03:43.28 all way through college 00:03:43.32\00:03:44.65 and then I got into military when I was in the service. 00:03:44.69\00:03:47.49 I was one of the first race relations directors 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.66 or coordinators in the US Navy. 00:03:49.69\00:03:53.40 And then I did it in the reserves. 00:03:53.43\00:03:55.66 I was one of the first to do it 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.03 in the reserve unit in Phoenix. 00:03:57.07\00:03:59.63 So it just kept leading me to this 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.60 and so I went to work, I got to finish my degree 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.54 and went to work for 00:04:03.57\00:04:04.91 the National Conference of Christians and Jews 00:04:04.94\00:04:07.28 which at that time was a national organization 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.24 working in interfaith relations, 00:04:09.28\00:04:11.51 in a group relations and they had the camp going 00:04:11.55\00:04:14.52 so I helped expand it, took it nationwide, 00:04:14.55\00:04:17.69 you know, many years. 00:04:17.72\00:04:19.05 And so, now we're in about 20 different cities 00:04:19.09\00:04:21.26 across the country with about 00:04:21.29\00:04:22.62 100 different high schools involved in it. 00:04:22.66\00:04:25.13 I like to do more of that or train more people to do it. 00:04:25.16\00:04:28.46 So you mentioned that 00:04:28.50\00:04:29.83 suicide is a very big issue right now with young people. 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.77 What are some of the other issues 00:04:32.80\00:04:34.90 that young people are facing? 00:04:34.94\00:04:36.71 Oh, well, you know, one of the other ones 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.07 that's constant is the idea of assault 00:04:38.11\00:04:43.35 and abuse and date rape. 00:04:43.38\00:04:45.78 One of the segments that we do in our... 00:04:45.81\00:04:47.42 in many of my programs or workshops in 00:04:47.45\00:04:50.59 is dealing with male female relationships 00:04:50.62\00:04:52.92 and how can we improve them. 00:04:52.95\00:04:54.79 And how they have messages that they're receiving 00:04:54.82\00:04:59.03 that are negative messages. 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.50 And I'll get more into that later. 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.56 But it's just the constant idea that this is happening. 00:05:02.60\00:05:05.03 There are predators on every campus 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.40 and we need to be aware of what we can do to, 00:05:07.44\00:05:11.04 to cut that down. 00:05:11.07\00:05:12.64 Especially which is the 30 show I wanted to bring up, 00:05:12.67\00:05:14.88 especially when you involve drugs or alcohol. 00:05:14.91\00:05:17.78 Then that creates a lot of problems 00:05:17.81\00:05:20.22 with abuse and molestation et cetera 00:05:20.25\00:05:23.12 and then date rape. 00:05:23.15\00:05:24.99 So those go hand in hand and again 00:05:25.02\00:05:27.12 a lot of kids are still thinking, 00:05:27.16\00:05:28.49 it's cool to smoke and drink and do all this. 00:05:28.52\00:05:31.76 And they just don't control it. 00:05:31.79\00:05:35.40 So we're going to be talking today about 00:05:35.43\00:05:37.80 what churches can do 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.57 and some of the issues that young people are facing 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.84 and how churches and other groups can help that. 00:05:41.87\00:05:45.51 What is the whole concept about 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.28 out of the classroom experiences, 00:05:47.31\00:05:49.94 learning experiences? 00:05:49.98\00:05:51.91 There's one more issue 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.28 I want to touch base or can I do it now? 00:05:53.31\00:05:54.65 Sure. 00:05:54.68\00:05:56.02 Okay, this is this fourth issue 00:05:56.05\00:05:57.39 that I think is very important 00:05:57.42\00:05:58.75 especially where churches are involved. 00:05:58.79\00:06:00.26 And that is to the amount of students today 00:06:00.29\00:06:04.06 that I see at camp or these workshops 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.33 that are turning away from faith, 00:06:06.36\00:06:08.03 turning away from religion, 00:06:08.06\00:06:09.86 the growing number of atheist, agnostic students. 00:06:09.90\00:06:13.30 I did a camp recently where we had the kids stand up 00:06:13.34\00:06:16.67 for the different faith groups 00:06:16.71\00:06:18.04 and there were a few Protestants, 00:06:18.07\00:06:19.41 a few Catholics, a few Jewish kids. 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.51 But all of a sudden about 00:06:21.54\00:06:22.88 almost 50% of the camp of 50 kids 00:06:22.91\00:06:25.31 said they were agnostic or atheist. 00:06:25.35\00:06:27.78 So I think that's something that 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.18 really needs to be looked at and worked on too. 00:06:29.22\00:06:32.92 Because in, you know, 00:06:32.95\00:06:34.82 I think it has something to do with suicide. 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.73 Many of the great percentage of the kids 00:06:36.76\00:06:38.49 that they've analyzed or studied that have no faith. 00:06:38.53\00:06:42.83 And so it's an easier, you know, 00:06:42.86\00:06:46.03 way to just give up and so. 00:06:46.07\00:06:49.17 But you were telling me, you were asking about 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.97 the out of classroom education concept, correct. 00:06:51.01\00:06:54.18 Anything in particular is the idea. 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.14 So, is every... 00:06:56.18\00:06:57.51 Can all these issues 00:06:57.55\00:06:58.88 be taken care of inside of the regular classroom? 00:06:58.91\00:07:01.18 Well, that's it. 00:07:01.22\00:07:02.55 This is why this type of programming is 00:07:02.58\00:07:04.89 can be so effective because, you know, 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.79 you've got classrooms where the bell goes off 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.39 in 45, 50 minutes and you've got to move on. 00:07:09.42\00:07:12.09 At least when you have them away from the classroom 00:07:12.13\00:07:13.90 and that's what out of classroom education is, 00:07:13.93\00:07:15.83 is taking them away from the classroom 00:07:15.86\00:07:17.47 and having them to have time to work out their issues, 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.94 to discuss their issues. 00:07:20.97\00:07:22.97 You know, that's where 00:07:23.00\00:07:24.34 the churches have been the leaders 00:07:24.37\00:07:25.71 in out of classroom education, 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.08 maybe they weren't aware of it 00:07:27.11\00:07:28.44 but every time they did a camp, 00:07:28.48\00:07:29.81 every time they had a retreat. 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.18 Right. 00:07:31.21\00:07:32.55 Out of classroom education also include sports, 00:07:32.58\00:07:35.08 especially if they're done right 00:07:35.12\00:07:36.45 and for the right reasons, totally effective. 00:07:36.48\00:07:40.06 After school programs are becoming more and more popular 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.92 because there's no one home to take care of the kids, 00:07:42.96\00:07:44.69 so after school programs are becoming more necessary 00:07:44.73\00:07:47.96 in many schools across the country. 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.73 So it really works very effectively 00:07:50.77\00:07:54.27 when you have those students in an isolated environment, 00:07:54.30\00:07:57.21 in a safe environment where they're, 00:07:57.24\00:07:59.37 where it's open for them to talk about 00:07:59.41\00:08:00.88 any issues or concerns. 00:08:00.91\00:08:03.38 So when you have these kind of a situations, 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.48 what are some of the staff that's helpful to have 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.62 to be able to support the young people? 00:08:08.65\00:08:11.15 Well, that's a real important ingredient 00:08:11.19\00:08:12.65 in any of these out of classroom education programs 00:08:12.69\00:08:15.02 is how qualified the staff are, how well trained they are 00:08:15.06\00:08:19.36 because you're dealing with all types of issues 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.56 that they can come up very, 00:08:21.60\00:08:22.96 very freely and very openly with. 00:08:23.00\00:08:25.13 Once you create that safe environment, 00:08:25.17\00:08:27.24 kids become trusting and then they open up 00:08:27.27\00:08:30.07 and that's when we hear about these issues 00:08:30.11\00:08:31.47 over and over again, 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.27 so definitely qualified staff. 00:08:33.31\00:08:35.74 Usually when we do a retreat with school, 00:08:35.78\00:08:39.45 we have, most of the staff come from the school 00:08:39.48\00:08:42.25 so they can go back and support the students 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.49 when they go back to school, 00:08:44.52\00:08:45.85 but we also get community people 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.46 to participate. 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.29 Like who? 00:08:49.32\00:08:50.66 Like who? Like yourself. 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.99 Yeah, remember that, when was that 5 years ago 00:08:53.03\00:08:55.13 when you came to one of... 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.50 to the camps in California. 00:08:56.53\00:08:58.47 Yeah. And it. 00:08:58.50\00:08:59.83 And I should say I'm a teacher 00:08:59.87\00:09:01.20 in a school psychology as well, 00:09:01.24\00:09:02.57 right. 00:09:02.60\00:09:03.94 So you get like a psychologist, 00:09:03.97\00:09:05.31 you get some of the counselors. 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.24 Counselors, we get high, 00:09:07.28\00:09:08.84 we get college students to be in the cabins with the students 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.61 especially if the faculty can't do that. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.75 Right. 00:09:13.78\00:09:15.15 And we also have police officers 00:09:15.18\00:09:16.62 that sometimes come in 00:09:16.65\00:09:18.45 and that's another major prejudice or you know that, 00:09:18.49\00:09:21.56 that often happens. 00:09:21.59\00:09:23.06 So what about in a church setting 00:09:23.09\00:09:25.03 if you know they're not necessarily tied to a school, 00:09:25.06\00:09:28.76 what would be some of the church people, 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.30 of course, I guess you could have the professionals 00:09:31.33\00:09:32.67 that are in the church, right? 00:09:32.70\00:09:34.04 Sure, professionals in the church, 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.40 community people that have other jobs, 00:09:35.44\00:09:37.97 have other thing, but they have an interest in 00:09:38.01\00:09:39.77 reducing prejudice and helping kids. 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.61 It takes a whole group of diverse staff as well as, 00:09:43.65\00:09:48.15 as much as you can diverse student too. 00:09:48.18\00:09:50.69 Because basically what happens 00:09:50.72\00:09:52.05 at these retreats is they learn from each other 00:09:52.09\00:09:53.49 more than when they learn from the staff. 00:09:53.52\00:09:55.62 And they're not based on lecture, you know, 00:09:55.66\00:09:57.96 or necessarily extensive preaching 00:09:57.99\00:10:00.66 but it's based on them exchanging them 00:10:00.70\00:10:03.53 learning from one another. 00:10:03.57\00:10:06.07 You mention basically the four issues that you see, 00:10:06.10\00:10:08.74 the top issues are suicide, 00:10:08.77\00:10:11.97 the effects of drugs and alcohol 00:10:12.01\00:10:15.94 on the young people, 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.91 effects of sexual molestation 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.68 and some of the other issues and assaults, date rape. 00:10:20.72\00:10:24.15 I mean, bullying is nationwide. 00:10:24.19\00:10:26.55 It's good to see that many schools 00:10:26.59\00:10:27.92 have instituted programs in bullying, 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.46 but now we're cyber bullying, 00:10:30.49\00:10:31.89 it's a whole new area you see. 00:10:31.93\00:10:34.40 You hear kids committing suicide 00:10:34.43\00:10:36.13 every other week in newspaper about 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.50 because they were cyber bullied. 00:10:38.53\00:10:41.20 And that's where the cyber bullying is where 00:10:41.24\00:10:44.61 a person goes on Facebook or social media. 00:10:44.64\00:10:47.58 Social media. 00:10:47.61\00:10:48.94 And what kinds of things. 00:10:48.98\00:10:50.35 Sadly to say, but what kinds of 00:10:50.38\00:10:52.65 maybe explain to our audience what is cyber bullying? 00:10:52.68\00:10:55.78 Well, basically if these kids 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.25 are looking for friends on the internet 00:10:57.29\00:10:59.62 and or they are on Facebook 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.26 or whatever, all these medias. 00:11:02.29\00:11:03.96 And somebody gets on their and invites them 00:11:03.99\00:11:07.26 and wants to be their friend, 00:11:07.30\00:11:08.63 it turns out that they want to do something more, 00:11:08.66\00:11:11.50 they do some harm to them 00:11:11.53\00:11:13.17 or they tease them or they harass them. 00:11:13.20\00:11:15.70 From classmates. 00:11:15.74\00:11:17.07 Yes, classmates and so eventually, you know, 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.84 and this constant harassment and, 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.24 you know, there's been lots of cases like this 00:11:22.28\00:11:24.61 and so the kids can't handle it, 00:11:24.65\00:11:26.01 you know, no more so they say I'll give it up 00:11:26.05\00:11:29.32 and that's what suicide is about, 00:11:29.35\00:11:31.42 just giving up. 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.22 One of the things that we try to teach up in the retreats 00:11:33.25\00:11:36.32 and I picked this up from a young counselor years ago 00:11:36.36\00:11:38.93 and that is to try to tell the students 00:11:38.96\00:11:41.26 that suicide is only... 00:11:41.30\00:11:44.20 It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. 00:11:44.23\00:11:47.14 But, you know, when a child is going through this, 00:11:47.17\00:11:48.77 they don't think that way, 00:11:48.80\00:11:50.67 they have to really look at in the future. 00:11:50.71\00:11:53.54 And then you said the whole concept of 00:11:53.58\00:11:56.51 not having any concept about God. 00:11:56.54\00:11:59.01 What do you think that all comes from right now 00:11:59.05\00:12:00.65 in today's society? 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.05 You're saying that you're going to camps that years ago 00:12:02.08\00:12:04.62 that people had different faiths 00:12:04.65\00:12:06.02 and they would identify their faith 00:12:06.05\00:12:07.52 but now they're saying 00:12:07.56\00:12:08.89 they don't even believe in God. 00:12:08.92\00:12:11.86 You know, I think 00:12:11.89\00:12:13.23 there's a lot of things going against it. 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.33 You know, lot of parents have made the decision 00:12:15.36\00:12:17.57 not to take their children to church 00:12:17.60\00:12:20.04 and so they say, you know, 00:12:20.07\00:12:21.40 I've heard said this several times, 00:12:21.44\00:12:23.04 oh, they will make up their minds eventually 00:12:23.07\00:12:24.91 or they'll make up their own choice. 00:12:24.94\00:12:26.54 But you've got to give them, 00:12:26.57\00:12:28.08 you've got to give them something to choose from 00:12:28.11\00:12:30.65 I think... 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.01 That's a good point. 00:12:32.05\00:12:33.38 Yeah, if you don't do... Say that again. 00:12:33.42\00:12:34.85 I think you really got to give your children 00:12:34.88\00:12:37.59 just like me and my wife did. 00:12:37.62\00:12:39.32 We took them to church every Sunday 00:12:39.35\00:12:41.39 and eventually we said okay, 00:12:41.42\00:12:43.19 now it's your choice to whatever religion or faith 00:12:43.22\00:12:45.09 you want to attend but at least you had a basis, 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.26 at least you had a foundation. 00:12:48.30\00:12:49.70 And that's what, you know, 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.07 this thinking that you don't give them a choice. 00:12:51.10\00:12:54.90 You know, that they will get your choice 00:12:54.94\00:12:56.84 even without nothing to work from. 00:12:56.87\00:13:00.64 I think another thing may be that we become very scientific. 00:13:00.68\00:13:05.38 You know, everything is scientific oriented 00:13:05.41\00:13:08.52 and so if you can't prove it 00:13:08.55\00:13:11.05 and that's what whole faith means you know, 00:13:11.09\00:13:12.95 is to have faith and believe it. 00:13:12.99\00:13:15.16 But so many people, 00:13:15.19\00:13:16.52 young people today are just into science 00:13:16.56\00:13:18.89 and saying it's not working. 00:13:18.93\00:13:22.00 Or they see some of the... 00:13:22.03\00:13:25.47 And I've heard this argument, 00:13:25.50\00:13:27.14 I'm sure you have too over the years 00:13:27.17\00:13:28.60 about all the things have been done under the violent 00:13:28.64\00:13:33.04 or the worse things have been done 00:13:33.07\00:13:34.41 under the name of religion. 00:13:34.44\00:13:36.04 Just like what's going on in the Middle East right now. 00:13:36.08\00:13:37.81 Under the name of religion, there's some terror going on, 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.85 there's some violence going on, killing going on 00:13:40.88\00:13:43.49 and you can look at that historically 00:13:43.52\00:13:45.32 but that was a misinterpretation, 00:13:45.35\00:13:48.19 a misguidance, a misused, misleaders I guess. 00:13:48.22\00:13:52.19 Right, the Bible doesn't teach violence with religion so. 00:13:52.23\00:13:57.10 You're right, people kind of take it on their own values, 00:13:57.13\00:14:01.50 groups of people and therefore, 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.14 so you're saying that youth today 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.14 are looking at that seeing the violence 00:14:05.17\00:14:07.54 and the terrorism and the problems 00:14:07.58\00:14:09.08 that are associated with religion 00:14:09.11\00:14:10.91 and so they're walking away from religion. 00:14:10.95\00:14:12.28 Yes, some are. 00:14:12.31\00:14:13.65 Some are saying that they, 00:14:13.68\00:14:15.02 there must not be a God if all these problems are here. 00:14:15.05\00:14:17.95 But if they don't have that anchor in the word of God, 00:14:17.99\00:14:21.82 then like you said when they hit a problem, 00:14:21.86\00:14:25.33 where do they go with it. 00:14:25.36\00:14:26.70 That's right. 00:14:26.73\00:14:28.06 They don't know where to go and that's where the suicide 00:14:28.10\00:14:30.43 and the other acting out harmful things come into play. 00:14:30.47\00:14:36.14 Wow. 00:14:36.17\00:14:38.17 So what can churches do? 00:14:38.21\00:14:40.91 Because you said that churches were the leaders. 00:14:40.94\00:14:43.41 Church, it's true, churches were the leaders 00:14:43.45\00:14:45.31 in the Civil Rights Movement for example. 00:14:45.35\00:14:48.65 Maybe give us a little background 00:14:48.68\00:14:50.95 on how some of the churches 00:14:50.99\00:14:52.82 help to be able to make things better in society 00:14:52.85\00:14:54.96 and how you think it can help here 00:14:54.99\00:14:57.36 with the young people today? 00:14:57.39\00:14:58.83 Well, let me give several areas, 00:14:58.86\00:15:00.53 one I think is they do they need to do more camps, 00:15:00.56\00:15:04.33 they need to do more retreats. 00:15:04.37\00:15:06.23 But not only for their own members of their... 00:15:06.27\00:15:08.90 Children, you know, children of other members 00:15:08.94\00:15:11.27 but also reach out to nonmembers' children. 00:15:11.31\00:15:15.48 I really enjoy when I see these churches 00:15:15.51\00:15:18.35 that bring buses into the inner city 00:15:18.38\00:15:20.22 and bring kids into their church 00:15:20.25\00:15:21.92 because these kids are not getting any direction, 00:15:21.95\00:15:24.45 their parents don't want to or can't 00:15:24.49\00:15:26.59 go to a church for some reason, 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.96 but if we got those non 00:15:28.99\00:15:30.76 then I think that would make a big difference. 00:15:30.79\00:15:33.46 I think the other thing too 00:15:33.50\00:15:34.83 I think churches need to expand their missionary work. 00:15:34.86\00:15:37.80 The idea of providing more opportunities 00:15:37.83\00:15:41.07 for young people to go on a mission 00:15:41.10\00:15:43.07 on one or two year commitment 00:15:43.10\00:15:45.34 where they have to sacrifice, so they can mature 00:15:45.37\00:15:48.14 where they can have that time to think 00:15:48.18\00:15:51.25 as well as support the church and support God etcetera. 00:15:51.28\00:15:55.02 So you think mission trips may be even I know, 00:15:55.05\00:15:58.35 I've heard of some that go like 00:15:58.39\00:15:59.72 maybe during their spring break or during the summer 00:15:59.75\00:16:01.72 or even if they can have extended. 00:16:01.76\00:16:03.09 Even though it's short term ones 00:16:03.12\00:16:04.96 but one of things that I've always admired is 00:16:04.99\00:16:06.59 what the Mormon Church has done is that 00:16:06.63\00:16:08.90 they've got extensive missionary program 00:16:08.93\00:16:11.27 and so does your Seventh-day Adventist... 00:16:11.30\00:16:12.73 Seventh-day Adventist they can go and serve 00:16:12.77\00:16:14.90 for whole year as a missionary worker. 00:16:14.94\00:16:16.27 Yeah. 00:16:16.30\00:16:17.64 But I think it needs to be made 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.01 because a lot of young people are coming out of high school 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.44 not knowing what they're going to do. 00:16:22.48\00:16:23.98 Some are not ready for college, 00:16:24.01\00:16:25.81 some don't want to go to college. 00:16:25.85\00:16:27.85 So why not go on a one or two year mission. 00:16:27.88\00:16:29.88 I mean, I even support the... 00:16:29.92\00:16:31.25 I mean, I'm not even 00:16:31.29\00:16:32.69 but I've always supported military service too. 00:16:32.72\00:16:35.52 Get away for a while, 00:16:35.56\00:16:37.09 learn I mean I spent two years of active duty in the US Navy 00:16:37.13\00:16:41.16 and it was such an experience but it made me think 00:16:41.20\00:16:43.40 and then I was ready to 00:16:43.43\00:16:44.77 because I wasn't going anywhere in college, 00:16:44.80\00:16:46.13 I was changing majors every semester. 00:16:46.17\00:16:48.14 So I figured out, okay, 00:16:48.17\00:16:50.74 maybe I need to get away for a while 00:16:50.77\00:16:52.21 and think about what direction I want to go 00:16:52.24\00:16:54.81 and the military service gave me that. 00:16:54.84\00:16:56.71 And it also gave me 00:16:56.75\00:16:58.11 the other reason why I went in the service 00:16:58.15\00:16:59.51 and it's still available is the GI Bill go on school. 00:16:59.55\00:17:03.99 So, there's a lot of avenues to just for children to grow. 00:17:04.02\00:17:09.26 I also have found that 00:17:09.29\00:17:10.73 some churches are taking on working with 00:17:10.76\00:17:15.33 foster care programs supporting foster care parents. 00:17:15.36\00:17:18.87 How do they do that? 00:17:18.90\00:17:20.24 Well, basically the one church I was attending 00:17:20.27\00:17:22.54 in the East Valley in Phoenix, 00:17:22.57\00:17:24.27 basically 00:17:24.31\00:17:27.21 they got involved with the foster care program 00:17:27.24\00:17:29.74 with the state 00:17:29.78\00:17:31.11 and they brought in speakers and lectures 00:17:31.15\00:17:32.61 and they have people, 00:17:32.65\00:17:33.98 some parents in the church became foster care parents 00:17:34.02\00:17:36.55 but not everybody can do that. 00:17:36.58\00:17:38.42 But they can sure support them. 00:17:38.45\00:17:40.29 They can mentor the students et cetera. 00:17:40.32\00:17:42.82 So the church took this on as a mission project. 00:17:42.86\00:17:45.63 They're actually having people come in from the state 00:17:45.66\00:17:47.93 or the county explain the foster program, 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.83 get their training and then actually go 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.67 and this is what you see is the missionary work 00:17:52.70\00:17:54.57 that the church can do... 00:17:54.60\00:17:55.94 That's another major. 00:17:55.97\00:17:57.31 Beyond the children of their immediate congregation. 00:17:57.34\00:17:59.64 It's a beautiful idea. 00:17:59.67\00:18:01.01 Let me tell you, 00:18:01.04\00:18:02.38 foster care is one of the biggest 00:18:02.41\00:18:04.35 social areas today in the social area 00:18:04.38\00:18:07.48 or support area I guess you call it. 00:18:07.52\00:18:10.25 And I learned that 20 years ago 00:18:10.29\00:18:11.62 when I was working with 00:18:11.65\00:18:12.99 one of the private foster care programs 00:18:13.02\00:18:14.92 that were sending students to our program 00:18:14.96\00:18:16.76 because here's what they found. 00:18:16.79\00:18:19.06 Many, this is 20 years ago 00:18:19.09\00:18:20.53 and I'm sure it's still pretty much the truth. 00:18:20.56\00:18:22.83 They found that many of their parents 00:18:22.86\00:18:24.53 were of white or European background 00:18:24.57\00:18:26.63 they were foster cared 00:18:26.67\00:18:28.00 but many of their students were minority 00:18:28.04\00:18:30.14 so they had a cultural conflict, 00:18:30.17\00:18:31.64 they had a racial conflict in some families. 00:18:31.67\00:18:33.78 So they started sending their kids to our program 00:18:33.81\00:18:35.64 because we talk about race and about, 00:18:35.68\00:18:37.85 you know, all those issues. 00:18:37.88\00:18:39.58 But anyway it is a growing phenomenon 00:18:39.61\00:18:41.58 and another reason why it's growing. 00:18:41.62\00:18:42.95 Well, there's more and more foster care kids out there. 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.52 They used to support the idea 00:18:45.55\00:18:46.92 of keeping them with their families 00:18:46.96\00:18:48.46 no matter what, 00:18:48.49\00:18:49.82 but then they found there was more violence, 00:18:49.86\00:18:51.73 there was more problems later on 00:18:51.76\00:18:53.90 and it was better, you know, 00:18:53.93\00:18:55.80 not to keep in with certain family. 00:18:55.83\00:18:57.20 Certain families are not capable of raising kids. 00:18:57.23\00:19:00.04 So now they're pulling more and more of them out, 00:19:00.07\00:19:02.37 so now the foster care program has just mushroomed. 00:19:02.40\00:19:05.91 There's many more in every state. 00:19:05.94\00:19:09.14 And I know in Phoenix or in Arizona it's quite big 00:19:09.18\00:19:11.98 because a lot of people come from other states 00:19:12.01\00:19:14.35 and they come with their problems 00:19:14.38\00:19:15.72 and they don't always solve them. 00:19:15.75\00:19:18.25 So that, their area would be 00:19:18.29\00:19:20.76 a good area to expand it. 00:19:20.79\00:19:23.36 The churches to be able to... 00:19:23.39\00:19:24.83 And just, you know, 00:19:24.86\00:19:26.53 nothing without even getting into foster care. 00:19:26.56\00:19:28.63 I think there's a lot of adults in churches 00:19:28.66\00:19:30.47 that could be mentors to students 00:19:30.50\00:19:32.90 that could help just guide them like 00:19:32.93\00:19:34.70 big brothers and big sisters do. 00:19:34.74\00:19:36.74 You know, play that role 00:19:36.77\00:19:38.64 because there are so many families today 00:19:38.67\00:19:40.84 that are dysfunctional 00:19:40.88\00:19:42.94 or that are missing a parent especially fathers. 00:19:42.98\00:19:46.08 And so, if somebody could supplement a father, 00:19:46.11\00:19:49.08 you know, it would be fantastic. 00:19:49.12\00:19:51.45 So those are some of the areas 00:19:51.49\00:19:54.22 and let me real quickly check it. 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.46 You have a nice little list of things 00:19:56.49\00:19:57.83 that we're looking at. 00:19:57.86\00:19:59.19 Yeah, I just don't want to miss any of the areas. 00:19:59.23\00:20:00.56 Oh, you know, one of the biggest things 00:20:03.26\00:20:04.80 that I've missed here is that. 00:20:04.83\00:20:06.43 Encourage the students in your church, 00:20:06.47\00:20:10.61 the young people that are role models of the faith 00:20:10.64\00:20:13.58 to participate in workshops like ours 00:20:13.61\00:20:16.14 because here's a problem I have found over the years is 00:20:16.18\00:20:18.68 some of the religious groups 00:20:18.71\00:20:20.05 did not want to send their kids there 00:20:20.08\00:20:21.42 because they had their own camps. 00:20:21.45\00:20:22.82 And they want to reinforce their own beliefs. 00:20:22.85\00:20:24.79 But I always ask, well, send me your role models, 00:20:24.82\00:20:26.79 send me the kids that know your faith 00:20:26.82\00:20:28.42 so they can teach others 00:20:28.46\00:20:30.16 and that's how we can overcome the issue of 00:20:30.19\00:20:32.49 so many kids I would think, 00:20:32.53\00:20:34.36 I mean they could reach out as peers 00:20:34.40\00:20:36.53 to those nonbelievers. 00:20:36.56\00:20:38.57 So if you can send your kids, 00:20:38.60\00:20:40.44 don't just keep them all to yourself. 00:20:40.47\00:20:42.87 Just, you know, 00:20:42.90\00:20:45.07 let them be little missionaries in other workshops. 00:20:45.11\00:20:50.05 And so that would, that would be real helpful. 00:20:50.08\00:20:54.55 Yeah, I think that sounds really good 00:20:54.58\00:20:56.79 so the foster care, the attending workshops 00:20:56.82\00:21:00.29 that churches could have more camps 00:21:00.32\00:21:02.39 you're saying where they can invite 00:21:02.42\00:21:04.66 beyond just their regular environments. 00:21:04.69\00:21:07.86 I know that Seventh-day Adventists 00:21:07.90\00:21:09.36 they have Sabbath school, they have pathfinders 00:21:09.40\00:21:11.93 which is kind of like boy scouts and girl scouts. 00:21:11.97\00:21:14.90 So you're saying don't just focus on 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.31 just the kids in the church, 00:21:17.34\00:21:19.37 go beyond the walls of the church 00:21:19.41\00:21:21.41 and reach out into the community 00:21:21.44\00:21:24.38 and try to make a difference. 00:21:24.41\00:21:26.18 There's one other area 00:21:26.21\00:21:28.65 that I want to mention if we have the time. 00:21:28.68\00:21:30.02 Sure. Okay. 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.39 And that is, you know, 00:21:31.42\00:21:32.75 one of the things I think 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.12 the churches need to reinforce again 00:21:34.16\00:21:35.59 which I was told as a young man. 00:21:35.62\00:21:39.69 I was in the Catholic Church at the time 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.63 and this priest, older man, 00:21:41.66\00:21:43.73 and he taught me the concept of sacred mind 00:21:43.77\00:21:47.44 and sacred body. 00:21:47.47\00:21:49.30 And I know that your church is very much involved with that, 00:21:49.34\00:21:52.07 that, but for young people, they don't see it that way. 00:21:52.11\00:21:54.81 They don't see their body or their mind as sacred 00:21:54.84\00:21:56.58 until years later most of us 00:21:56.61\00:21:59.05 and that's where all the drugs and the alcohol 00:21:59.08\00:22:01.42 and negative behaviors sometimes come, 00:22:01.45\00:22:04.12 you know, the smoking. 00:22:04.15\00:22:05.69 I mean, I've heard some stories where, 00:22:05.72\00:22:07.92 you know, I've not only... 00:22:07.96\00:22:10.26 See one of the areas 00:22:10.29\00:22:12.23 that we touch on at camp is disabilities 00:22:12.26\00:22:14.46 and I'll cover that more later but the idea that sometimes 00:22:14.50\00:22:17.33 we cause our own disabilities, you know. 00:22:17.37\00:22:19.97 What do you mean? 00:22:20.00\00:22:21.34 Disabilities can happen to us 00:22:21.37\00:22:22.70 by chance by fate what have you. 00:22:22.74\00:22:24.97 But if we cause our own disability 00:22:25.01\00:22:27.58 by drugs or alcohol like my uncle. 00:22:27.61\00:22:30.08 He started smoking cigarette at the age of 16 or 14 00:22:30.11\00:22:34.32 I can't remember for sure 00:22:34.35\00:22:35.68 but anyway by the time he was 20, 00:22:35.72\00:22:37.42 he was smoking a pack a day. 00:22:37.45\00:22:39.05 Time he was 30, he was smoking two packs a day 00:22:39.09\00:22:41.72 and about the age of 35 00:22:41.76\00:22:43.09 he was diagnosed with emphysema. 00:22:43.12\00:22:45.69 And so all you know 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.06 having the disease of the lungs. 00:22:47.10\00:22:49.80 And let me tell you that 00:22:49.83\00:22:51.23 they gave him a small little container of oxygen 00:22:51.27\00:22:53.74 to breathe in every once in awhile. 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.64 Well, the last 25 years of his life, 00:22:55.67\00:22:57.71 he had a tank that he had to roll around with him 00:22:57.74\00:22:59.87 wherever he went 00:22:59.91\00:23:01.61 and so he lost out being with his grandchildren, 00:23:01.64\00:23:06.01 he couldn't go outside, 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.38 it was just this tank followed him, 00:23:07.42\00:23:08.78 this oxygen tank. 00:23:08.82\00:23:10.15 But he caused it, 00:23:10.19\00:23:11.59 he could have prevented that and, 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.32 you know, you hear of other things 00:23:13.36\00:23:14.69 and accidents that happen is a result 00:23:14.72\00:23:16.36 of being intoxicated 00:23:16.39\00:23:18.56 can result in being disabled. 00:23:18.59\00:23:23.43 So we need to teach more of that 00:23:23.47\00:23:24.80 sacred body and sacred mind concept I think. 00:23:24.83\00:23:27.30 Yeah. 00:23:27.34\00:23:28.67 How about parents or extended family? 00:23:28.70\00:23:31.14 What do you see their role in being able to help 00:23:31.17\00:23:33.17 some of the young people? 00:23:33.21\00:23:34.64 Well, I, you know, 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.14 I wish that we had more parenting workshops 00:23:36.18\00:23:38.51 that's for sure. 00:23:38.55\00:23:40.55 I like one of the concepts 00:23:40.58\00:23:41.92 I heard about LA about 15 years ago 00:23:41.95\00:23:43.82 or so they were, they were. 00:23:43.85\00:23:46.72 Whenever they arrested a young person, 00:23:46.76\00:23:48.79 they would go after the parents and say okay, 00:23:48.82\00:23:50.66 now you have to go to a workshop 00:23:50.69\00:23:52.23 or a seminar on parenting 00:23:52.26\00:23:53.93 because this child is out of control 00:23:53.96\00:23:55.66 or making too many mistakes etcetera. 00:23:55.70\00:23:57.77 And I think we need to look at those 00:23:57.80\00:23:59.13 type of training workshops too. 00:23:59.17\00:24:02.57 I think there's a lot of single parent families, 00:24:02.60\00:24:04.47 it's becoming a phenomena 00:24:04.51\00:24:05.84 that how many children are being 00:24:05.87\00:24:07.21 born out of wedlock today. 00:24:07.24\00:24:08.98 So here's kids that need support 00:24:09.01\00:24:10.78 they need, you know, 00:24:10.81\00:24:12.15 somebody to mentor them as I was saying before. 00:24:12.18\00:24:16.05 Hopefully that, 00:24:16.08\00:24:17.69 yeah parents can do more there's no doubt. 00:24:17.72\00:24:20.06 And we can reach out to other students or the kids. 00:24:20.09\00:24:23.83 So are you available to travel 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.39 and to be able to do trainings for people? 00:24:26.43\00:24:29.10 Yes, I'm kind of semi retired right now 00:24:29.13\00:24:32.07 but what I've come down to the conclusion. 00:24:32.10\00:24:34.14 And I think God has been involved in this decision, 00:24:34.17\00:24:36.54 He just said, you know, you need to train other people. 00:24:36.57\00:24:41.38 You need to make a difference now 00:24:41.41\00:24:42.91 in getting other younger individuals 00:24:42.94\00:24:45.58 to do the work that I've been doing for years 00:24:45.61\00:24:47.95 and I've trained others I've got mentees 00:24:47.98\00:24:49.98 and I've been a mentor to several 00:24:50.02\00:24:52.89 that have become you know national speakers etcetera. 00:24:52.92\00:24:57.39 But I need to do more of that, 00:24:57.43\00:24:59.49 I like to initiate programs 00:24:59.53\00:25:02.36 in churches and schools wherever, 00:25:02.40\00:25:05.50 school districts and teach them 00:25:05.53\00:25:08.20 how to do it themselves so then I can walk away 00:25:08.24\00:25:11.24 and it continues. 00:25:11.27\00:25:12.71 In fact I have several school districts in Phoenix 00:25:12.74\00:25:14.94 that are now doing these workshops all in their own, 00:25:14.98\00:25:17.68 and it works out just great. 00:25:17.71\00:25:19.11 So what kind of, 00:25:19.15\00:25:20.85 how would you set that up as far as, 00:25:20.88\00:25:22.98 what could a person expect 00:25:23.02\00:25:24.35 if they're going to be having a training, 00:25:24.39\00:25:25.72 is it like a one day or two day or, 00:25:25.75\00:25:28.86 you know, how many? 00:25:28.89\00:25:30.23 What kind of people should be pulled together 00:25:30.26\00:25:32.73 to be able to do that? 00:25:32.76\00:25:35.00 Well, what I like to do the best is, 00:25:35.03\00:25:38.37 the best I think method would be to have 00:25:38.40\00:25:41.70 bring him to a workshop, 00:25:41.74\00:25:43.07 a three or four day workshop that we do. 00:25:43.10\00:25:45.87 And then have him go through the activity. 00:25:45.91\00:25:49.18 Because the first time around, let me tell you, 00:25:49.21\00:25:52.68 our workshops not only work effectively on young people, 00:25:52.71\00:25:56.48 adults, teachers 00:25:56.52\00:25:58.99 have all said this is one of the best experiences 00:25:59.02\00:26:01.62 or in service trainings I've ever attended 00:26:01.66\00:26:04.89 and they get to go through some of their issues. 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.46 And I think they have to do that. 00:26:06.49\00:26:08.03 And then the second time they come around, 00:26:08.06\00:26:09.86 they go through experience, then they start looking at the, 00:26:09.90\00:26:12.23 at the way it's done and the dynamics 00:26:12.27\00:26:16.04 and the process that makes it successful. 00:26:16.07\00:26:19.57 And so you need to have him there. 00:26:19.61\00:26:21.34 I can do a one or two day workshop 00:26:21.38\00:26:23.55 and show them some of the exercises and go over 00:26:23.58\00:26:25.31 because here's the other thing I've found 00:26:25.35\00:26:26.88 is many of these exercises are out there, 00:26:26.92\00:26:28.75 they've been out there for years. 00:26:28.78\00:26:30.52 But if you don't know how to process or debrief from 00:26:30.55\00:26:33.25 and get the maximum out of these activities, 00:26:33.29\00:26:35.56 you know, sometimes you can work 00:26:35.59\00:26:38.13 to the negative side rather than the positive side. 00:26:38.16\00:26:40.33 Right, right. 00:26:40.36\00:26:42.36 Well, I certainly appreciate you coming to the program today 00:26:42.40\00:26:44.90 and explaining to us about the youth issues 00:26:44.93\00:26:48.47 and how churches and other community groups 00:26:48.50\00:26:51.94 can get involved in helping and making a big difference. 00:26:51.97\00:26:56.41 And certainly, you know, 00:26:56.44\00:26:58.68 you can attest to the work that's been done 00:26:58.71\00:27:00.95 over the years that has reached so many people. 00:27:00.98\00:27:04.42 Again I just want to thank you so much 00:27:04.45\00:27:06.05 for watching this program today. 00:27:06.09\00:27:08.29 And before we leave, 00:27:08.32\00:27:09.72 I would like to be able to just take a moment right now 00:27:09.76\00:27:12.19 to have prayer for those that are watching 00:27:12.23\00:27:14.96 the youth leaders, the pastor, the parents 00:27:15.00\00:27:17.83 and even some of the young people 00:27:17.87\00:27:19.27 that may be involved 00:27:19.30\00:27:21.37 in some of the challenges that we face. 00:27:21.40\00:27:23.87 So let's have a prayer right now 00:27:23.91\00:27:25.67 and ask God's help for that. 00:27:25.71\00:27:28.54 Thank You heavenly Father 00:27:28.58\00:27:29.91 for all that You've done for us. 00:27:29.94\00:27:31.28 Thank You for Your Son Jesus Christ, 00:27:31.31\00:27:34.68 Who died on the cross to save us 00:27:34.72\00:27:36.15 and most importantly He came down on this earth 00:27:36.18\00:27:38.65 and lived the life. 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.02 He was a young person at one time 00:27:40.06\00:27:41.89 and Lord, it's Your power 00:27:41.92\00:27:44.13 to the presence of the Holy Spirit 00:27:44.16\00:27:45.59 and the angels dear God 00:27:45.63\00:27:46.96 that are going to come to search and rescue 00:27:47.00\00:27:48.93 your young people, 00:27:48.96\00:27:50.30 so we just want to ask for Your help 00:27:50.33\00:27:52.60 in anyway that we can especially 00:27:52.63\00:27:54.10 as church is to intervene 00:27:54.14\00:27:55.47 and make a big difference 00:27:55.50\00:27:56.84 in the lives of young people today, 00:27:56.87\00:27:58.21 and we thank you the name of Jesus, amen. 00:27:58.24\00:27:59.94 Amen. 00:27:59.97\00:28:01.31 Again thank you so much for coming... 00:28:01.34\00:28:02.91 My pleasure. 00:28:02.94\00:28:04.28 And wish you well as you go back to Phoenix 00:28:04.31\00:28:06.15 and to your family 00:28:06.18\00:28:07.52 and continue to do these wonderful camps. 00:28:07.55\00:28:09.32 And again thank you so much for joining us 00:28:09.35\00:28:11.99 on Issues and Answers today, we hope that it was helpful 00:28:12.02\00:28:15.62 and I will see you next time. 00:28:15.66\00:28:17.23 God bless. 00:28:17.26\00:28:18.59
