It's interesting because

this takes place
on the Sea of Galilee.

Popular sea in
many of the stories

involving Jesus Christ.

It's referred to in many
different ways in scripture.

In some places it's
the Sea of Tiberius,
00:03:43.22\00:03:46.39
sometimes it's Lake Chinnereth,
sometimes it's Lake Gennesaret,
00:03:46.42\00:03:52.09
depending on where you
were located around the sea.
00:03:52.13\00:03:55.53
Sort of named the sea
after your particular area
00:03:55.56\00:03:57.90
or your particular
province wherever you might be.
00:03:57.93\00:04:00.97
But for most people,
00:04:01.00\00:04:02.34
they know it as
the Sea of Galilee.
00:04:02.37\00:04:04.31
And the amazing thing is
that everything is going well,
00:04:04.34\00:04:09.41
before this story takes place.
00:04:09.44\00:04:13.05
Jesus, as always is
making the blind to see,
00:04:13.08\00:04:18.02
and causing the lame to walk,
00:04:18.05\00:04:19.69
and He's preached
a wonderful sermon
00:04:19.72\00:04:22.29
and He's been
thereby the seaside
00:04:22.32\00:04:25.63
and the people have come
in mass numbers as always
00:04:25.66\00:04:29.93
to receive a word from Him.
00:04:29.96\00:04:32.83
But then it is Jesus,
00:04:32.87\00:04:34.67
not the
disciples, not anyone else.
00:04:34.70\00:04:37.31
But it's Jesus that beckons them
00:04:37.37\00:04:40.64
to cross over to the other side.

And I think
it's important for us

to pause here for a second
because sometimes we assume,
00:04:46.05\00:04:50.05
it's always the
devil that puts us
00:04:50.09\00:04:53.15
in difficult situations.

Right. Right.
But not in this case.

It's Jesus that tells them,
00:04:57.43\00:05:00.53
"Let us cross
over to the otherside."
00:05:00.56\00:05:03.16
Knowing full well that
a storm is about to occur.
00:05:03.20\00:05:05.53
Knowing full well that
indeed there is about to be
00:05:05.57\00:05:09.20
almost a catastrophic
event, if He doesn't step in.
00:05:09.24\00:05:13.58
But He still tells them,
00:05:13.61\00:05:15.88
"Let us cross over
to the other side."
00:05:15.91\00:05:17.91
It's important for us to
understand that sometimes
00:05:17.95\00:05:20.65
God will allow us to
get into certain situations.
00:05:20.72\00:05:25.02
And have to deal
with these situations,
00:05:25.05\00:05:27.19
because He is trying
to perfect our characters.
00:05:27.26\00:05:30.23
He is trying to make us better.
00:05:30.26\00:05:32.09
And so sometimes He
allows us to get into trouble
00:05:32.13\00:05:35.00
so that He can help us to grow
00:05:35.03\00:05:37.03
from that troubling experience.

And He tells them
and scripture records
00:05:39.20\00:05:42.20
that there were
several other little boats
00:05:42.24\00:05:45.81
that immediately launched
off following Jesus across.
00:05:45.84\00:05:51.25
So were they following
Him or they're trying to--
00:05:51.28\00:05:53.31
was that also providential
00:05:53.38\00:05:55.12
for them to get
into trouble too?
00:05:55.15\00:05:56.85
Or were they just
following the group or what?
00:05:56.89\00:05:59.29
Well, I think, you
know, Jesus was so popular.
00:05:59.32\00:06:01.09
He was such a, you
know, celebrity of sorts that,
00:06:01.12\00:06:05.19
you know, they just
want to be with Him.
00:06:05.23\00:06:06.56
They wanted to be--
to have the closest seat,
00:06:06.59\00:06:08.73
they want to be where He was
00:06:08.76\00:06:10.17
and no one ever
wanted Jesus to leave.
00:06:10.20\00:06:13.07
I mean, you're
talking about a person that,
00:06:13.10\00:06:14.90
no matter what
illness they came to Him with,
00:06:14.94\00:06:18.04
they were healed.
00:06:18.07\00:06:20.28
You look back then, I
mean, I wonder oftentimes
00:06:20.31\00:06:23.68
how did hospital survive in
the towns that Jesus was in.
00:06:23.75\00:06:28.38
You know, perhaps you know,
00:06:28.42\00:06:29.75
you would come
by their hospitals
00:06:29.78\00:06:31.12
and you see all the
workers just sitting outside.
00:06:31.15\00:06:34.16
Thinking it's a
coffee break or lunch break
00:06:34.19\00:06:35.79
but the truth is,
there is just no patients.
00:06:35.82\00:06:38.46
There is no patients
inside because Jesus is in town.
00:06:38.49\00:06:41.30
And when He is in
town, everybody gets healed.
00:06:41.33\00:06:43.83
Doesn't matter
what is the issue is,
00:06:43.87\00:06:45.20
there is no incurable diseases,
00:06:45.23\00:06:47.10
when you are in the
presence of Jesus Christ.
00:06:47.14\00:06:49.20
And so it's amazing
because they say listen,
00:06:49.24\00:06:52.84
If He is gonna across,
let's go across with Him.
00:06:52.87\00:06:55.34
And I think it's
important to understand,
00:06:55.38\00:06:56.71
if you gonna be a
follower of Christ,
00:06:56.75\00:06:58.75
then you have to understand
that I got to follow Christ
00:06:58.78\00:07:01.58
not just in the good times
00:07:01.62\00:07:03.22
but I got to also stick
with Him in the bad times.
00:07:03.25\00:07:05.39
And just because
it's good starting off,
00:07:05.42\00:07:07.59
doesn't mean it is
going to be the smooth road
00:07:07.62\00:07:10.26
through the whole way
across to the other side.
00:07:10.29\00:07:12.56
On this journey,
from here to heaven,
00:07:12.59\00:07:15.13
there is gonna be
some difficult times.
00:07:15.16\00:07:17.00
There's gonna be
some rough times.
00:07:17.07\00:07:18.90
There's gonna
be some experiences
00:07:18.93\00:07:21.17
that have been
allowed to come into your path
00:07:21.20\00:07:24.01
to make you grow.
00:07:24.04\00:07:25.51
And these little
ships launch off with Him.

And they are
headed out into the ocean
00:07:27.71\00:07:30.15
and it's amazing
because out of no where,
00:07:30.18\00:07:32.95
you know, scholars talk often
about how the Sea of Galilee
00:07:32.98\00:07:37.69
is in such a way
where the mountains
00:07:37.72\00:07:39.82
are very close together.
00:07:39.85\00:07:41.72
And it is known,
it was always known
00:07:41.76\00:07:43.73
for a situation where--
00:07:43.76\00:07:45.36
as the wind would
pass through those tunnels,
00:07:45.39\00:07:47.40
those tight tunnels
between the mountains,
00:07:47.40\00:07:49.40
oftentimes a storm would
start out of almost nothing.
00:07:49.43\00:07:52.87
You have perfectly calm sea
00:07:52.90\00:07:54.24
and then all of a
sudden there is a storm.
00:07:54.27\00:07:56.30
And Jesus is
out there with them.
00:07:56.34\00:07:58.14
They are going across
00:07:58.17\00:07:59.94
and out of
nowhere, a storm comes.
00:08:00.04\00:08:02.01
Isn't that-- Well,
life is all about, Karen?
00:08:02.04\00:08:04.55
This certainly
is. It just hits you.
00:08:04.58\00:08:06.11
Just hits you
sometimes. Out of nowhere.
00:08:06.15\00:08:07.48
Out of nowhere, you know.
00:08:07.55\00:08:09.22
And, as some people say
00:08:09.25\00:08:10.62
"when it rains,
it pours," you know.
00:08:10.65\00:08:11.99
And it's
something that, you know,
00:08:12.02\00:08:13.99
you have to adjust
to, you have to deal with.
00:08:14.02\00:08:16.52
But we are told,
listen God never gives us
00:08:16.56\00:08:19.09
anything that we
cannot bear, ever.
00:08:19.13\00:08:21.86
And this story is very,
very telling in that regard
00:08:21.90\00:08:25.60
because they get out
there and the storm comes up
00:08:25.63\00:08:29.70
out of nowhere.
00:08:29.74\00:08:31.24
And immediately
the disciples make
00:08:31.27\00:08:33.41
a very significant mistake.
00:08:33.48\00:08:36.44
In that, they forget who
they are in the boat with.
00:08:36.48\00:08:40.95
They just saw Him
healing everybody.
00:08:40.98\00:08:43.05
They just saw Him
healing incurable diseases.
00:08:43.08\00:08:45.42
It's an amazing thing
because it's not just Jesus
00:08:45.45\00:08:48.06
healing the sick or
making the blind to see
00:08:48.09\00:08:50.73
or making the lame to walk
00:08:50.76\00:08:52.09
or curing diabetes or cancer,
all these other kind of things.
00:08:52.13\00:08:55.30
Matthew records an
account that in essence
00:08:55.33\00:08:57.87
not only did all of
these people come to Him
00:08:57.90\00:08:59.63
but even people who were maimed,
00:08:59.67\00:09:02.20
came to Jesus.
00:09:02.24\00:09:04.04
Missing a limb, missing an arm,
missing a leg, missing with--
00:09:04.07\00:09:07.74
And all He had to
do was touch them.
00:09:07.78\00:09:09.94
All He had to do
was speak a word,
00:09:09.98\00:09:11.71
and they were made whole.
00:09:11.75\00:09:13.75
How could they doubt
Him after seeing an arm
00:09:13.78\00:09:16.95
appear out of nowhere?
00:09:17.02\00:09:18.79
How can they doubt Him
00:09:18.82\00:09:20.19
as He is making the
way across the water?
00:09:20.22\00:09:21.72
But instead of relying
upon Jesus, like we always do,

and tend to do oftentimes,
00:09:26.29\00:09:28.06
is we try to fix
the problem ourselves.

And this is what they are
doing out there in the ocean.

It's amazing
because they are trying
00:09:33.20\00:09:37.01
to bail the boat
out, tightening the sails,
00:09:37.04\00:09:40.78
use all of their
expertise when it comes to
00:09:40.81\00:09:44.15
being fishermen
and men of the water.
00:09:44.18\00:09:46.65
And they are killing
themselves trying to do it.
00:09:46.72\00:09:50.39
And you need to
understand that--
00:09:50.42\00:09:52.55
Listen, Jesus will allow you
00:09:52.59\00:09:56.83
to try your hard as
to fix the situation
00:09:56.86\00:09:59.69
and He will sit back
and let you kill yourself,
00:09:59.73\00:10:02.66
trying to fix the situation.
00:10:02.70\00:10:04.50
Because He is gonna
wait until you realize
00:10:04.53\00:10:07.04
that the only
person that can fix you,
00:10:07.10\00:10:08.64
the only person
that can save you,
00:10:08.67\00:10:10.21
the only person that
can deliver you is Him.
00:10:10.27\00:10:13.04
And until you come
to that realization,
00:10:13.07\00:10:15.21
He'll let you do
whatever you think
00:10:15.24\00:10:17.11
you can do to pull it off.
00:10:17.15\00:10:18.71
He'll let that-- Oh, yeah.

He'd let the bank account
run dry, He'd let, you know,
00:10:20.12\00:10:23.12
that car just
completely fall apart,
00:10:23.15\00:10:24.72
He will let
everything come apart at once

until you come to the point,

that I got to look
up and call on Jesus.

And when that happens,
then He is ready to deliver.

And so they are bailing

and they are doing
all kind of things.

And one preacher once
said, you know, he shared,

"Hey listen, these are
some foul-mouthed fishermen."

And the fact of the matter
is, is that many of the things
00:10:43.27\00:10:46.44
they said on
the lake that night,
00:10:46.47\00:10:49.84
didn't get
recorded in the gospel, man.
00:10:49.88\00:10:51.48
It had to be left
out of the gospels, man,
00:10:51.51\00:10:53.05
because there were
some amazing things,
00:10:53.08\00:10:55.12
being said on
the lake that night.
00:10:55.15\00:10:56.48
Tight situations. Oh,
this is a tight situation.

And so in essence,

they are fighting and
fighting and, you know,
00:11:00.59\00:11:03.12
the border is actually
now filling up the boat.
00:11:03.16\00:11:06.06
The boat is going down.

It's filled with
water and it's going down.

And it is then
that they call on Jesus.

It is then that they remember

that it's actually
Jesus that's in the boat.

Now I got to ask you, pastor,
having grown up in Bermuda--

Seeing the ocean all around you,

did you ever see any
kind of storms like that

or did you see boats
00:11:30.35\00:11:31.69
or people getting
stuck out there in the ocean?
00:11:31.72\00:11:33.05
Absolutely.
00:11:33.09\00:11:34.42
As a matter of fact, I have been
00:11:34.46\00:11:35.79
part of many of them myself.
00:11:35.82\00:11:37.83
No question about it.
00:11:37.86\00:11:39.19
You know,
Bermuda has a main island
00:11:39.23\00:11:41.73
but there are
many little islands
00:11:41.76\00:11:43.10
that's surrounded.
00:11:43.13\00:11:44.47
One of those little islands,
00:11:44.50\00:11:45.83
which is actually
in the center of it,
00:11:45.87\00:11:47.20
is an island that I grew up on.
00:11:47.27\00:11:48.97
I rode a boat everyday
to work, everyday to class,
00:11:49.00\00:11:53.91
everyday to school,
everyday to church, you know.
00:11:53.94\00:11:57.18
God forbid you forget something,
00:11:57.21\00:11:58.55
you got to get
right back on the boat
00:11:58.58\00:11:59.95
and go all the way back
across and come over to--

Oh, it's amazing.

Amazing time
growing up in Bermuda.

But being on the water
00:12:04.62\00:12:06.32
actually
sometimes with my family

or sometimes alone,
encountered many storms.

And I am glad you bring that up

because we used to
have sailing classes.
00:12:12.66\00:12:17.23
They used to
take place at my house
00:12:17.27\00:12:19.43
and one of the things
they taught us how to do
00:12:19.47\00:12:22.87
was to capsize a boat.
00:12:22.90\00:12:25.54
And so in other
words, you need to understand
00:12:25.57\00:12:27.24
if your boat tips
over or it began to sink,
00:12:27.28\00:12:29.48
you need to know how
to get that boat back up
00:12:29.51\00:12:32.18
and running
because you may be out
00:12:32.21\00:12:33.58
at sea or something by yourself.

So you need to be able
to understand that concept.

Well, one of the
things that I have learnt,

in boat that are sinking,
boats that are going down,

is that the back of the
boat always goes down first.

Really. Hold on a second now.

Thomas, because Jesus is asleep

in the back of the boat.

The disciples are complaining

because water is
up to their knees.

Jesus is asleep and
there is water up to His ears.

In other words, in our
trials and circumstances

we are never bearing
the majority of the issues.

He is always caring the
heavy side of the burden,

He only gives us
what we can handle.

The rest He takes care of. Wow.

But for Him,

our troubles do not trouble Him.

For Him, it's
just a quite storm.

It can make all
the noise it wants.

But He can sleep in it
because He knows that anytime

He can get up in it,

and tell it to just
hush its mouth and it will.

So He can sleep
while we try and paddle.

He can sleep while we
try to bail the boat out.

He can sleep while we think
we can handle the situation

and when we're done,

when we have no more
energy to fight ourselves,

Then He says, "Okay,
I'm ready to help you."

What do you need?

And it's an amazing
thing because, man, Jesus--

He is not just
asleep back there,

He had the nerve to
prop His head up on a pillow.

I mean, He is
relaxed, He is chilling,

He is at the spa
00:14:08.31\00:14:09.81
while they are over
there fighting tooth and nail
00:14:09.84\00:14:12.68
to try and bail the boat out.

And it's astonishing
but they bake the question

that many of us often do.

They ask Him,

they say, "Carest
Thou not that we perish."

Don't you even care
about my circumstance.

Don't you even care when
I am going through Jesus.

And there are many that
asked that question today.

I gotta ask you a question,

with our humanity, you know,

I am tend to get
scared of storms.
00:14:35.50\00:14:37.51
I don't like storms.
00:14:37.57\00:14:38.91
I don't like the
idea of being on the boat
00:14:38.94\00:14:40.28
and wind blowing all around me.
00:14:40.34\00:14:41.68
How do we deal with that?

Right and I think it's always
00:14:43.11\00:14:44.91
important to
remember that we serve a God
00:14:44.95\00:14:50.25
that one of His characteristics
is that is He is omnipresent.

He is everywhere all the time.

So there is no
situation that you are in,

that He is not already there.
00:15:00.83\00:15:03.00
And He is
waiting, He is anxious,

He is desperate
that you will call on Him

the next time.

And not rely on yourself

or your friends or
your family, you know.

And it's amazing He
will let you go through

the whole family tree,
you know, while He waits,

You wanna go all through that.
