teachers that cared about me

you needed a new kind of school,

What kind of
decisions do they make for you

so that you'd be successful?

Well, there are five of us. Wow.

And we couldn't afford it.

And my dad said, I
would not give one penny

for Christian
education because I pay taxes.

And my mother
stepped out in faith

through the
encouragement of a dear sister

that brought her
to the Lord and said,

We're gonna put the
children in one at a time.

And so I started
at LA Union. Oh, yeah.

In the seventh grade. Wow.

And it was in the seventh grade
while I was having worship,

the Lord said, "Walter, I
want you to be a minister."

In the ninth grade, He says,
"I want you to be a teacher."

And that's
where he instructed me

to "Go ye therefore,
and teach all nations."

And that's what we have been
doing for the past 32 years.

So when you got that calling,

gets a calling on their life

you take after ninth grade

that minister, teacher?

Well, I listen to the Lord.

I spend a lot of time
in Bible study and prayer.

I did a lot of evangelism,

worked with the
former George Rainey,

our pastor, Samuel
Meyers in Los Angeles.

I worked with other
evangelists in the LA area

where we raised
a church every year

for about eight or nine
years, a brand new church.

So I have a lot of
experience in evangelism

and then as I was
growing and studying,

the Lord said, "Go to Oakwood."

and went right in education,

got my degree in
theology and minor in history,

secondary education.

And from then on,
rest has been history.

They are rolling ever since.

some of the experiences

Matter of fact, I was
hired with a telephone interview

and my mother called
me, she says, "Walter,

a Mr. Stigner has called you."

So I called the number.

It was Mr. Stigney,
very fine Christian gentleman

and he interviewed me.

Next thing I knew,

my wife and I were
headed to San Francisco.

Did we have everything? No.

But it was a great school

and several of the
students that we have taught

have gone on to be
Christian professionals

in our Christian school,
in our small Christian school.

It went from K
through tenth grade.

Yeah, I'm familiar
with the San Francisco

Bay area, right.

Worked there and
lived there myself

and so that's a kind of
a interesting situation.

You got a city, a big
city environment there

and a lot of private schools,

good private
schools that are there.

But kind of going on to what,

why was it so important
do you think for people

to send their kids

to a Seventh-day Adventist
school in San Francisco?

Several of the
parents understood

that the
foundation of their children,

the educational
foundation of their children,

what they were doing
at home was important,

in doing for Sabbath school,
church is very important.

But they also
needed another tier

and I believe in the home,
school and the church approach.

You need all three tiers

and if one of
those tiers is broken,

your children, many
times would be deficient.

And it has been
proven through studies,

that the longer our children
are in our church schools,

the likelihood of
them staying in the church

and growing in
the church increase.

have done the studies.

It's been proven.

Francisco was a challenge

was in a little small school

that graduated from that school

We would see them
mattering across the campus.

I said, "Young people,
had you checked out the dorm?"

And they would say, "No."

I encouraged the juniors to

One was Bible

one was the music ministry,

and to monitor, make
sure the kids were doing with,

they were conducted themselves.

And it was wonderful.

Several of the young people
that they brought in seniors,

freshmen, sophomores.

And then around my
third or fourth year there,

with 10 kids, 15, 25, 30.

Next thing you know,
we were in the library.

worship, just on their own.

perfect at the school

My fourth, fifth and sixth year,

I became the vice
principal and village dean.

And someone had told me
that I was gonna be a dean

and I said, "Oh,
no. I'd never be a dean.

became, I became the dean,

the village dean, the head dean

and there were some
students that we had to ask

not to return unfortunately.

father were very hurt by it

He is now giving Bible studies

he is now ministering to
those type of individuals.

And he said, the
best thing for him

was for us to ask him to depart.

It turned his life around.

of times people say,

"Well, it's really great
to be able to send your child

school but the academics,

they are gonna get
Jesus and everything

but, you know,

do you have any
stories of where you've seen

people's lives
totally turn around?

Some kids, maybe they
came in low and you know,

I have several.

There was one young
man in San Francisco.

He was not doing
well academically.

And he was a discipline
issue. We had to encourage him.

Back in those days,

you could use other
methods to help them, to...

And now we cannot. Yes, amen.

But I learnt that by
taking this young man

and putting him in the dirt,
having him digging the dirt,

it did something to
burn out that extra energy

and his mother
says, "Mr. Turner,

I said, "Oh, oh,
wait, wait, wait, Mrs. Ramo,

what do you mean what
I'm doing to your son?"

My son is not
getting in trouble.

His grades have gone
up. What has happened?"

I said, "Oh, simple.
I put him in the dirt."

Teacher was
sending him to my class,

he'd get in trouble,

I send him out
into the garden and say,

want all the weeds taken out.

He did a beautiful job.

his disciplinary
issues went down.

The same young man

before the Adventists
were for Sabbath school.

He was there at 9 o'clock
'cause he had to catch a bus.

And he also joined
Pathfinders, he and his brother.

And thank God, it was a miracle
that happened years later,

I was the only teacher

that he invited
back to his wedding.

That's really great.

been other young people...

man, I taught in Las Vegas.

And the pastor said,

done well in school.

And he has turned it around

and it's all because of Mr. T."

And I said, "That's
not me. It's Jesus."

I'm just loving the kids

and helping them to know
Jesus as their personal savoir

and putting before them

that they can be
whatever they want to be.

And so, yes, there have been
students throughout the years

that have just, they
did just enough to get by

and I've held the fire to them,

I said, "You could
do better than this."

There is no
mind, we've been told,

there's no mind that
is too dull to learn,

no mind.

So I believe it and I tell kids,

"Regardless of your past scores,

regardless of your low grades,

you are
intelligent, you are smart."

And they said, "I am?"

And then I helped them,
take them where they are

and then build them up

and then as they see
success, breed success

and that's very, very important
audience must understand.

Christian education too
