00:02:19.97\00:02:24.01 Well, I think you need to have a very good leader, 00:02:24.04\00:02:26.98 and we've talked about that, 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.98 and you need to have good people 00:02:29.01\00:02:30.91 for a successful team. 00:02:30.95\00:02:33.52 I am passionate about this subject, 00:02:33.55\00:02:35.78 and then I'll let you ask me another question, 00:02:35.82\00:02:39.25 but I'm very passionate about this subject 00:02:39.29\00:02:40.96 because I love ministry 00:02:40.99\00:02:44.16 and I love being a worker in my church. 00:02:44.19\00:02:47.70 Did you know that most of the people 00:02:47.73\00:02:50.10 that we have in churches, not just my church 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.03 but in every church worldwide, 00:02:53.07\00:02:55.64 they're volunteers, they are unpaid workers, 00:02:55.67\00:03:02.64 many of whom come to work every day, 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.35 but it's service to them and it's ministry to them. 00:03:05.38\00:03:07.88 And so I just want to share a few ideas from my experience, 00:03:07.92\00:03:11.95 even though most of my work experience 00:03:11.99\00:03:13.92 was in corporate America, 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.72 but I've got some experience also in working in community 00:03:15.76\00:03:18.56 and in the church and working on a team in my home. 00:03:18.59\00:03:21.93 My husband and I make up a fantastic team in my home, 00:03:21.96\00:03:24.97 so I'm excited about sharing a few things today. 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.80 Surely. 00:03:27.84\00:03:29.20 How important do you think, even sometimes, 00:03:29.24\00:03:32.31 I have seen good leaders 00:03:32.34\00:03:34.58 with good team members around them, 00:03:34.61\00:03:38.15 and the team is floundering 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.92 because they don't have clear goals. 00:03:40.95\00:03:44.22 How important is goal setting to good success of the team? 00:03:44.25\00:03:50.53 Goal setting is important, but first, let me say 00:03:50.56\00:03:56.06 because I like images of things, 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.93 and for the purpose of our discussion here today, 00:03:58.97\00:04:02.10 I created a pie chart 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.74 of how learning takes place on a team. 00:04:04.77\00:04:10.11 And so if you are a member of a team, 00:04:10.15\00:04:11.95 or you are interested in joining a team, 00:04:11.98\00:04:14.85 whether it's on your job, or in the community, 00:04:14.88\00:04:17.95 or in the church, 00:04:17.99\00:04:19.32 and the church is made up of many, many, many teams 00:04:19.35\00:04:22.39 but overall one big team, 00:04:22.42\00:04:25.16 and that's the members in the church. 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.43 And sometimes, 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.80 in many of our ministry programs, 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.27 we have a little difficulty getting started. 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.47 And we have some difficulty in ending, 00:04:34.50\00:04:37.11 but 70% of the knowledge that you gain 00:04:37.14\00:04:41.48 and how to be 00:04:41.51\00:04:43.18 an effective member of the team 00:04:43.21\00:04:45.45 comes from actually volunteering 00:04:45.48\00:04:48.88 or being asked to serve on that team, 00:04:48.92\00:04:51.72 20% of the knowledge that one learns and gains 00:04:51.75\00:04:56.32 about how to be an effective team member 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.99 comes from the role models 00:04:59.03\00:05:01.36 and from those individuals that are on the team, 00:05:01.40\00:05:03.37 or in the church, or in the community 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.07 that will give you feedback. 00:05:05.10\00:05:06.50 Now in one of those areas that I just mentioned, 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.70 we never really have to worry about 00:05:08.74\00:05:10.77 people in our churches 00:05:10.81\00:05:12.54 giving us a little feedback about what they think. 00:05:12.57\00:05:16.71 That's true. 00:05:16.75\00:05:18.25 You know, you may be a little less inclined 00:05:18.28\00:05:20.75 on your job to really be honest 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.28 and upfront and candid with some employee 00:05:23.32\00:05:27.42 on your job or team member on your job, 00:05:27.46\00:05:29.52 but in the church, from my experience, 00:05:29.56\00:05:31.96 my members are not short 00:05:31.99\00:05:34.50 on giving me their feedback 00:05:34.53\00:05:36.00 in terms of their feelings about my role 00:05:36.03\00:05:39.00 or participation on any project team 00:05:39.03\00:05:41.24 that we have there in the church. 00:05:41.27\00:05:42.90 But clear goals is the question that you ask, 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.88 they're important 00:05:46.91\00:05:48.44 because the team needs to know 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.25 the purpose of the team. 00:05:51.28\00:05:52.71 Right. 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.15 What is our purpose 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.42 in the worldwide church 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.49 that you and I belong? 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.49 We have a mission, 00:06:00.52\00:06:02.52 spreading the three angels' gospel, 00:06:02.56\00:06:06.46 telling the world that Jesus Christ is soon to come. 00:06:06.49\00:06:10.03 Now each person I believe has a ministry purpose. 00:06:10.07\00:06:14.20 And if you don't know what that purposes is, 00:06:14.24\00:06:16.20 then you just need to have a little talk with Jesus 00:06:16.24\00:06:17.81 and ask him, 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.17 "What is my purpose here on this earth? 00:06:19.21\00:06:20.58 What is my purpose in life?" 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.01 But clear goals on any formalized or informal team, 00:06:22.04\00:06:26.61 if the leader does not make sure 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.68 that there are clear goals, then there will be, 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.49 and the term that I used is floundering, 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.46 you'll have difficulty starting 00:06:34.49\00:06:39.26 and you'll have difficulty in how to end. 00:06:39.29\00:06:42.86 So floundering takes place 00:06:42.90\00:06:45.73 when you don't have clear goals on your team. 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.97 Not only clear goals 00:06:48.00\00:06:49.50 but how about clearly defined roles? 00:06:49.54\00:06:54.84 When people are in a team that they don't know, 00:06:54.88\00:06:59.51 you know, if you can say this is what 00:06:59.55\00:07:01.08 we want to do, now let's do it, 00:07:01.12\00:07:04.75 my experience has been 00:07:04.79\00:07:06.12 if someone hasn't been assigned a certain responsibility, 00:07:06.15\00:07:10.79 there's no accountability for that to get done. 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.53 You can say, you know, we need to get this church, 00:07:13.56\00:07:17.20 let's say, it's the reception room, 00:07:17.23\00:07:19.23 "Okay, we need to get this cleaned up." 00:07:19.27\00:07:21.17 Okay, and then we want to do, you line out, 00:07:21.20\00:07:24.21 but if you don't tell someone, 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.77 "Okay, you need to do this part, 00:07:25.81\00:07:27.14 you take the kitchen, you do this," 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.34 it doesn't seem like anything gets done 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.45 if it's just a corporate role, 00:07:31.48\00:07:34.55 we have to kind of break that down, 00:07:34.58\00:07:35.92 would you agree? 00:07:35.95\00:07:37.29 I agree, and let me tell you, 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.65 what you have just asked is very important. 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.12 Now of course I have not had it secret 00:07:41.16\00:07:44.06 that I love to cook in my home, 00:07:44.09\00:07:45.63 I love cooking for my husband, and I love to bake. 00:07:45.66\00:07:49.73 So let's just use this 00:07:49.76\00:07:51.73 in the context of an ingredient 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.40 that goes into baking your special whatever that is, 00:07:55.44\00:07:58.54 whether it's a dessert or an entrée. 00:07:58.57\00:08:03.11 When you don't have clearly defined 00:08:03.14\00:08:06.25 roles and responsibilities in the church, on the job, 00:08:06.28\00:08:12.75 or if you are a community activist, 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.29 or in your home, 00:08:15.32\00:08:16.73 if there aren't clearly defined roles and responsibilities, 00:08:16.76\00:08:20.00 guess what you get? 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.36 Nothing. 00:08:21.40\00:08:23.80 You get confusions. Absolutely. 00:08:23.83\00:08:25.93 It's confusion. 00:08:25.97\00:08:27.70 It's like trying to bake a cake and then you don't remember 00:08:27.74\00:08:31.17 what ingredient you put in last. 00:08:31.21\00:08:33.17 Right. 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.54 You know, you will have absolute confusion. 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.31 So this was so important 00:08:36.34\00:08:37.95 until I made a couple of notes here, 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.38 so let me just read you the first line, 00:08:39.41\00:08:41.22 that goes this is so important, I want to script this. 00:08:41.25\00:08:45.39 No one wants confusion in the church, 00:08:45.42\00:08:50.06 on the job, in the home, 00:08:50.09\00:08:53.13 or on a team. 00:08:53.16\00:08:54.73 No one would desire confusion. 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.27 Clearly defined goals and responsibilities 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.97 for every single member of the household, 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.07 for members of a team, 00:09:03.10\00:09:05.11 is an important ingredient 00:09:05.14\00:09:08.64 because you don't want there to be any confusion 00:09:08.68\00:09:12.48 about what your role and responsibility is. 00:09:12.51\00:09:15.52 Amen. 00:09:15.55\00:09:16.89 And any project that I'm invited 00:09:16.92\00:09:19.39 to participate, 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.16 that's a basic question that I will have, 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.86 what role, what responsibility. 00:09:23.89\00:09:27.26 And I have learned to ask that. 00:09:27.30\00:09:29.63 From experience? 00:09:29.66\00:09:31.00 Yes, often I have been, 00:09:31.03\00:09:33.44 somebody will come to me 00:09:33.47\00:09:34.80 and ask me to join an organization 00:09:34.84\00:09:36.17 or they'll take on a role. 00:09:36.20\00:09:37.54 And if you are asked to be part of a committee 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.68 or part of a group, a team effort, 00:09:40.71\00:09:44.25 if I don't ask what role in advance 00:09:44.28\00:09:47.35 what I often find is suddenly, 00:09:47.38\00:09:49.05 "I'm the one that's heading this up 00:09:49.08\00:09:50.99 and it wasn't my idea. 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.35 That's right. 00:09:52.39\00:09:53.72 So, you know, you may be taking on 00:09:53.76\00:09:55.42 more responsibility than you want to assume 00:09:55.46\00:09:57.86 or have time to commit to the project. 00:09:57.89\00:10:01.36 And I would say, that's not always, you know, 00:10:01.40\00:10:03.47 your fault or the team member's fault 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.53 because if you were never given 00:10:06.57\00:10:09.44 your clearly defined role and responsibility, 00:10:09.47\00:10:13.24 then I don't think it's necessarily fair 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.81 to suggest that Shelley is trying to take over, 00:10:15.84\00:10:17.81 she's trying to run things. 00:10:17.85\00:10:19.18 You know, that's not usually what it is. 00:10:19.21\00:10:20.55 It's usually, "Okay, we've got you on the team. 00:10:20.58\00:10:21.98 Okay, what do we do?" And it's like, "Oops, wait." 00:10:22.02\00:10:24.25 I wasn't planning on, you know, managing the team 00:10:24.29\00:10:28.12 or leading the team, I should say. 00:10:28.16\00:10:29.62 I was only wanting to, you know, 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.03 I can commit this much time 00:10:32.06\00:10:33.43 and you're suddenly asking me to oversee the entire project, 00:10:33.46\00:10:36.50 so that's something that's very important to me 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.67 is to find the goals... 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.70 what the expected roles are, clearly defined roles. 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.94 So we have clearly defined goals. 00:10:44.97\00:10:47.14 Yes. Clearly defined roles. 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.41 Now let's talk about clear communication 00:10:49.44\00:10:51.61 because I know 00:10:51.65\00:10:52.98 that's an important ingredient to team building. 00:10:53.01\00:10:55.55 It is. 00:10:55.58\00:10:56.92 And for me, and this comes from experience too 00:10:56.95\00:11:00.82 because I've spent so many years in leadership, 00:11:00.86\00:11:03.32 but I can sit back quietly 00:11:03.36\00:11:06.09 and observe an organization, 00:11:06.13\00:11:09.76 observe a team, observe a board, 00:11:09.80\00:11:14.67 observe an executive committee, 00:11:14.70\00:11:17.67 and it doesn't take me very long 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.57 to get a sense of this ingredient 00:11:19.61\00:11:24.05 and that is if communication is not clear, 00:11:24.08\00:11:28.28 it doesn't take long 00:11:28.32\00:11:29.78 to determine that the team members, 00:11:29.82\00:11:32.35 the committee members, the board members, 00:11:32.39\00:11:35.12 they don't have clear communications 00:11:35.16\00:11:38.23 about what is being discussed 00:11:38.26\00:11:40.46 and what is being required of them. 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.23 That gives a true indicator 00:11:42.26\00:11:44.67 as to how well that team or that board is being run. 00:11:44.70\00:11:47.84 Communication is key. 00:11:47.87\00:11:50.01 And whenever you have clear communications, 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.27 you will know that everybody is working in sync, 00:11:52.31\00:11:55.18 I might use language sometimes because I spent so many years 00:11:55.21\00:11:58.11 working in an environment where everything that we did 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.92 was to support an automobile company. 00:12:00.95\00:12:02.75 Yes. 00:12:02.78\00:12:04.12 And, you know, any leader 00:12:04.15\00:12:07.39 working in the automobile industry 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.72 during the time that I spent my working career, 00:12:09.76\00:12:12.76 they would identify these terms 00:12:12.79\00:12:15.86 that the success of this corporation, 00:12:15.90\00:12:18.70 the success of this company will be dependent upon 00:12:18.73\00:12:24.04 how well this team, and at the time, 00:12:24.07\00:12:26.61 we had more than 80,000 plus employees that were working, 00:12:26.64\00:12:30.75 you know, for GM at the time, they are far less today. 00:12:30.78\00:12:34.22 But it was determined 00:12:34.25\00:12:35.58 based upon the success of the team, 00:12:35.62\00:12:38.25 how well the team worked together. 00:12:38.29\00:12:41.42 Think of a car, think of a truck, 00:12:41.46\00:12:44.79 most cars and trucks have four wheels, 00:12:44.83\00:12:48.23 teamwork is working together toward a common goal 00:12:48.26\00:12:52.37 that everybody knows what it is, 00:12:52.40\00:12:54.14 you know the purpose, 00:12:54.17\00:12:55.50 so that each one of those wheels 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.97 on that truck, on that car are moving in sync 00:12:58.01\00:13:01.64 so that that car would move and that truck would move. 00:13:01.68\00:13:04.45 I'm inspired myself. 00:13:04.48\00:13:06.41 I feel like I want to go back to work. 00:13:06.45\00:13:09.28 But teamwork is key 00:13:09.32\00:13:11.52 when everybody is working together, 00:13:11.55\00:13:13.89 very much like you have here at the studio, 00:13:13.92\00:13:15.82 everybody has a role and a responsibility, 00:13:15.86\00:13:18.36 and they are performing those roles 00:13:18.39\00:13:20.13 while you and I are having this conversation 00:13:20.16\00:13:22.16 about team building. 00:13:22.20\00:13:23.70 And clear communication is very critical. 00:13:23.73\00:13:27.37 Sometimes, you will go to... 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.01 My schedule is very jam packed. 00:13:30.04\00:13:33.31 And often if I allow 45 minutes for a meeting, 00:13:33.34\00:13:37.81 45 minutes is all I can give to a particular meeting. 00:13:37.85\00:13:41.62 And if you're in there and I'm leading the meeting 00:13:41.65\00:13:44.89 and someone's coming in late 00:13:44.92\00:13:46.32 and they're critical 00:13:46.35\00:13:47.72 to the procedure or the process, 00:13:47.76\00:13:51.56 you may have to catch them up, 00:13:51.59\00:13:52.93 then suddenly I will find myself 00:13:52.96\00:13:55.46 sometimes trying to explain something 00:13:55.50\00:13:58.50 and you've got someone 00:13:58.53\00:13:59.87 who's constantly popping their hand up, 00:13:59.90\00:14:02.37 not allowing you to give an overview, 00:14:02.40\00:14:04.37 to give a clear communication, you know, 00:14:04.41\00:14:06.61 and defining your purposes and all, 00:14:06.64\00:14:08.78 and it becomes very frustrating for a leader, 00:14:08.81\00:14:11.61 so you have to learn 00:14:11.65\00:14:13.72 how to clearly communicate the importance of the overview, 00:14:13.75\00:14:17.92 you have to learn to, you know, 00:14:17.95\00:14:20.06 with all these different personality styles, 00:14:20.09\00:14:22.46 how to communicate with them in a way that won't offend them 00:14:22.49\00:14:24.96 but that they are not detracting from the team 00:14:24.99\00:14:27.56 because there's always someone like that. 00:14:27.60\00:14:29.76 And that brings us to your point, 00:14:29.80\00:14:33.47 and I think it's a very critical point, 00:14:33.50\00:14:35.84 of we have to learn to be Christ like 00:14:35.87\00:14:41.68 in our behavior if we are a leader. 00:14:41.71\00:14:44.28 And it's important that the whole team model 00:14:44.31\00:14:48.72 that Christ-like behavior. 00:14:48.75\00:14:51.65 Let me begin by saying, 00:14:51.69\00:14:54.89 today I believe is the first time 00:14:54.92\00:14:59.69 that I have ever been a part of a program 00:14:59.73\00:15:03.06 in an environment such as we are here at 3ABN 00:15:03.10\00:15:06.74 where I have the freedom to use the terminology 00:15:06.77\00:15:10.07 that I'm going to use today 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.04 and talking about the need to have 00:15:12.07\00:15:15.71 Christ-like behavior demonstrated by individuals 00:15:15.74\00:15:19.65 who are participating on the team. 00:15:19.68\00:15:21.38 Now as you well know, in the corporate environment, 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.92 I would not be able to convene my staff 00:15:23.95\00:15:27.52 and have a discussion with them 00:15:27.56\00:15:29.42 about how we really need to have some improvement 00:15:29.46\00:15:32.89 in their Christ-like behavior on our team. 00:15:32.93\00:15:35.86 I wouldn't be able to express it in that context, 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.80 but what I want to tell the world today is that 00:15:38.83\00:15:42.50 in corporate environments, 00:15:42.54\00:15:45.14 and I'm a Christian, 00:15:45.17\00:15:46.84 in corporate environments, from my experience, 00:15:46.88\00:15:50.75 I believe we use biblical principles. 00:15:50.78\00:15:56.35 Different vernacular. 00:15:56.38\00:15:57.72 Exactly, different vernacular, 00:15:57.75\00:15:59.42 as a matter of fact, what I want to spend... 00:15:59.45\00:16:01.62 If we have the time, I want to spend a little time 00:16:01.66\00:16:04.33 sharing with you very specifically 00:16:04.36\00:16:07.46 some values that, as a corporate leader, 00:16:07.50\00:16:11.10 they were ingrained in me 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.17 and anybody that worked on my team, 00:16:13.20\00:16:14.80 any manager, any supervisor, any employee, 00:16:14.84\00:16:17.74 there were certain values 00:16:17.77\00:16:19.47 for the corporation that I worked for 00:16:19.51\00:16:21.71 that we reviewed at every staff meeting, 00:16:21.74\00:16:24.91 every single staff meeting. 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.41 And when I took a closer look at them 00:16:26.45\00:16:29.02 in preparation for having this conversation with you, 00:16:29.05\00:16:31.79 I realized that they were values 00:16:31.82\00:16:35.29 that every Christian holds very dear, 00:16:35.32\00:16:39.69 I believe, and if they don't, 00:16:39.73\00:16:41.06 I hope after our discussion today, 00:16:41.10\00:16:42.53 when they review what we have talked about, 00:16:42.56\00:16:44.67 they will say we need to model some of the same values. 00:16:44.70\00:16:48.70 These are Christ-like values that corporate individuals do. 00:16:48.74\00:16:52.34 You know, I have to just interject if I may here. 00:16:52.37\00:16:55.24 I have found that most self-improvement, 00:16:55.28\00:16:59.91 most I'm saying, most self-improvement gurus 00:16:59.95\00:17:05.05 are using biblical principles, 00:17:05.09\00:17:08.46 and often, they'll have some biblical principles. 00:17:08.49\00:17:12.19 You can just see exactly where they've taken them 00:17:12.23\00:17:15.00 from the Bible, 00:17:15.03\00:17:16.36 and they just put different labels on 00:17:31.75\00:17:33.82 because people understand they are important, 00:17:33.85\00:17:35.82 and I think it's inherent to people in general 00:17:35.85\00:17:40.09 who were created in the image of God 00:17:40.12\00:17:42.46 even though they may have fallen. 00:17:42.49\00:17:44.09 They know there are certain 00:17:44.13\00:17:45.93 basic principles that are important. 00:17:45.96\00:17:49.16 I listed a few. 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.93 I feel free today. 00:17:50.97\00:17:52.43 I am so happy to have this discussion with you 00:17:52.47\00:17:55.27 because as you said, 00:17:55.30\00:17:56.77 the Book of Proverbs is a wonderful study, 00:17:56.81\00:18:00.98 as a matter of fact, 00:18:01.01\00:18:02.34 we're studying it right now in our lessons, 00:18:02.38\00:18:05.61 in our Bible study lessons, you know, at my church, 00:18:05.65\00:18:07.85 but at the top of the list 00:18:07.88\00:18:09.88 and I said I know that for some of our viewers 00:18:09.92\00:18:12.85 this might seem odd, 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.06 but at the top of the list 00:18:15.09\00:18:16.73 as one of the values that we had 00:18:16.76\00:18:18.69 as a corporate leader 00:18:18.73\00:18:20.40 that I covered with my employees 00:18:20.43\00:18:22.10 for all of those years guess what it was, humility. 00:18:22.13\00:18:26.13 That's interesting. 00:18:26.17\00:18:27.50 That was value number one. 00:18:27.54\00:18:30.37 That's interesting. 00:18:30.41\00:18:31.74 Let me share a few things with you. 00:18:31.77\00:18:35.31 Humility is based on... 00:18:35.34\00:18:36.95 This is my humble understanding. 00:18:36.98\00:18:39.51 Humility is based on that understanding 00:18:39.55\00:18:42.08 that each person 00:18:42.12\00:18:44.69 that was on my team had ideas, 00:18:44.72\00:18:51.49 and inside of them, 00:18:51.53\00:18:53.16 they may have had a desire to share their ideas. 00:18:53.19\00:18:57.83 My role, my job as a leader 00:18:57.87\00:19:00.40 was to be sensitive to those dynamics within that team, 00:19:00.44\00:19:04.07 to sense those verbal and nonverbal communications 00:19:04.11\00:19:08.11 so that I would have some completion to that 00:19:08.14\00:19:11.35 and encourage, create an environment 00:19:11.38\00:19:13.01 so that everybody could share. 00:19:13.05\00:19:14.95 So it takes humility 00:19:14.98\00:19:18.05 sometimes for a leader to be able to step back 00:19:18.09\00:19:20.99 and say, "I don't know everything 00:19:21.02\00:19:24.53 and maybe I'm doing 00:19:24.56\00:19:26.16 more of the talking in our team meetings 00:19:26.19\00:19:28.36 and staff meetings than I should." 00:19:28.40\00:19:30.37 Everybody knows the role that each other has, 00:19:30.40\00:19:33.77 so we don't always have to say, 00:19:33.80\00:19:35.70 "Because I'm the leader, I must chair." 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.51 I don't think that the leader, meaning the position 00:19:37.54\00:19:41.34 is necessarily the person 00:19:41.38\00:19:42.71 that should always chair every single meeting. 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.31 That's good. 00:19:44.35\00:19:45.68 I think that there are team members sometimes, 00:19:45.71\00:19:47.75 I mean, but that takes leadership with humility 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.92 to be able to be enabling and empowering, with humility, 00:19:49.95\00:19:55.42 to be enabling and empowering 00:19:55.46\00:19:57.89 to allow some of the gifts of individuals on the team, 00:19:57.93\00:20:01.70 you know, to shine. That is so critical in church. 00:20:01.73\00:20:04.67 I love it. It is. It is. 00:20:04.70\00:20:06.03 And in homes, that's a very critical... 00:20:06.07\00:20:08.30 Let me share another value that we had on my work team 00:20:08.34\00:20:12.14 in the corporate environment, curiosity. 00:20:12.17\00:20:15.61 And to me, curiosity just builds on humility. 00:20:15.64\00:20:19.71 If you're working in cooperation with the leader 00:20:19.75\00:20:23.79 that does not stifle every idea that you have 00:20:23.82\00:20:26.96 even though it may not be the best idea at the time, 00:20:26.99\00:20:29.36 I say you should have creativity and curiosity flow 00:20:29.39\00:20:36.13 within every team. 00:20:36.16\00:20:37.67 That builds a strong team so that they can move together 00:20:37.70\00:20:41.74 like those wheels on those cars and trucks 00:20:41.77\00:20:43.81 that I was talking about, 00:20:43.84\00:20:45.17 moving in sync together 00:20:45.21\00:20:47.08 to accomplish a common goal and purpose. 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.64 And for us, for Christians in the church, 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.68 we know what our mission is, 00:20:51.71\00:20:54.18 we know what our goals are 00:20:54.22\00:20:55.55 in order to accomplish that mission, 00:20:55.58\00:20:57.49 and by God's grace, 00:20:57.52\00:20:58.85 I'm determined to be a part of a movement 00:20:58.89\00:21:02.66 that knows what its mission is and what its purposes is. 00:21:02.69\00:21:06.26 Another value, empathy. 00:21:06.29\00:21:10.83 Empathy, and I made a few notes on this. 00:21:10.87\00:21:13.20 It goes something like this. 00:21:13.23\00:21:16.34 And this is not a Webster's Dictionary definition. 00:21:16.37\00:21:18.91 Okay. This is just... 00:21:18.94\00:21:20.44 We like it better. 00:21:20.48\00:21:22.38 Really, I'm being creative here, 00:21:22.41\00:21:24.55 so I would say, empathy goes like this, 00:21:24.58\00:21:27.95 I understand, Shelley, that you have your view, 00:21:27.98\00:21:32.72 which is probably different from my view 00:21:32.75\00:21:34.62 on this subject of team building, 00:21:34.66\00:21:38.39 but I also understand that your view about this subject 00:21:38.43\00:21:41.36 that we're talking about 00:21:41.40\00:21:43.03 is as valid to you as my view is to me. 00:21:43.06\00:21:47.27 That's right. 00:21:47.30\00:21:48.64 But guess what, 00:21:48.67\00:21:51.37 I want to tell you 00:21:51.41\00:21:52.74 that I want to understand your point of view. 00:21:52.77\00:21:57.61 That's good. 00:21:57.65\00:21:58.98 To me, that's a person who shows empathy 00:21:59.01\00:22:03.25 to another person. 00:22:03.28\00:22:04.62 And then the last one, the last value 00:22:04.65\00:22:07.79 that we spend a lot of time sharing with our employees 00:22:07.82\00:22:12.89 is the area of trust. 00:22:12.93\00:22:16.10 Do you know in the home, there must be trust? 00:22:16.13\00:22:21.37 Without trust, there is no team. 00:22:21.40\00:22:25.57 Without trust in any organization, 00:22:25.61\00:22:27.78 without trust from leaders to employees, 00:22:27.81\00:22:30.65 without trust, there can be no teamwork. 00:22:30.68\00:22:36.25 If nobody on the team trusts anybody on the team, 00:22:36.28\00:22:39.75 if no one within the church board 00:22:39.79\00:22:43.36 trusts each other on the church board, 00:22:43.39\00:22:44.99 I say it's time to have an offsite meeting 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.80 and deal with one value, and that's trust. 00:22:47.83\00:22:51.73 I see each one of these as Christ-like behavior. 00:22:51.77\00:22:54.04 Do you agree with me? Oh, absolutely. 00:22:54.07\00:22:55.40 I wrote a couple of other thoughts here about this. 00:22:55.44\00:22:57.67 Trust is made up of two parts, 00:22:57.71\00:23:00.24 and then I'll share just a short story. 00:23:00.28\00:23:01.61 I know we don't have a lot of time, 00:23:01.64\00:23:03.21 but I love this subject. 00:23:03.24\00:23:05.31 Trust in my view has two parts to it, 00:23:05.35\00:23:10.75 competence and sincerity. 00:23:10.79\00:23:14.99 Here's my story. 00:23:15.02\00:23:16.73 I think I shared it with the members of your team here 00:23:16.76\00:23:21.26 and maybe some that are even behind the cameras today. 00:23:21.30\00:23:24.47 And I said imagine that if you had never flown 00:23:24.50\00:23:27.27 on an airplane before 00:23:27.30\00:23:28.84 and you went to the airport 00:23:28.87\00:23:30.21 and now it's time for you to board 00:23:30.24\00:23:31.57 and you get on the aircraft, 00:23:31.61\00:23:33.01 and nowadays the stewardesses, 00:23:33.04\00:23:35.91 I think they still call them stewardesses, 00:23:35.94\00:23:37.85 are very friendly 00:23:37.88\00:23:39.28 but sometimes the pilot is standing there at the door 00:23:39.31\00:23:41.92 to greet all of the company's guests. 00:23:41.95\00:23:45.45 And so you're next in line and the pilot greets you 00:23:45.49\00:23:48.32 and he says, "Well, Shelley, how are you doing today? 00:23:48.36\00:23:51.56 Welcome on board. 00:23:51.59\00:23:53.50 I am so looking forward to this flight. 00:23:53.53\00:23:56.03 You know, Shelley, I love flying. 00:23:56.06\00:23:58.43 I have always loved flying. 00:23:58.47\00:24:00.50 I've always wanted to fly an airplane 00:24:00.54\00:24:02.17 since the time that I was a child." 00:24:02.20\00:24:04.17 And let's say perhaps that you, Shelley, said to the pilot, 00:24:04.21\00:24:08.41 "Well, where did you get your pilot's training?" 00:24:08.44\00:24:11.55 And how long have you been flying? 00:24:11.58\00:24:12.91 Right. 00:24:12.95\00:24:14.28 "Well, I've never had any pilot's training 00:24:14.32\00:24:16.99 and I've never flown before." 00:24:17.02\00:24:19.82 I'd be walking out. Exactly. 00:24:19.85\00:24:23.46 Do you get my story? 00:24:23.49\00:24:25.03 The point of the story, 00:24:25.06\00:24:26.39 the message in the story is that 00:24:26.43\00:24:29.23 in leadership and in the value of trust, 00:24:29.26\00:24:34.60 trust is two parts, 00:24:34.64\00:24:37.04 you can be as sincere as possible in what you say, 00:24:37.07\00:24:42.84 but if you don't demonstrate that you're trustworthy, 00:24:42.88\00:24:44.98 in other words, 00:24:45.01\00:24:46.35 if there isn't that demonstration of competence, 00:24:46.38\00:24:49.35 we're not gonna have a one-leg stool here for trust. 00:24:49.38\00:24:52.42 It goes in two parts, 00:24:52.45\00:24:54.29 you must have both competence and sincerity. 00:24:54.32\00:24:58.26 When we talk about a team, like, 00:24:58.29\00:25:01.53 especially let's use the reference of the church, 00:25:01.56\00:25:05.50 if we're talking about team building 00:25:05.53\00:25:07.04 or even in home, 00:25:07.07\00:25:08.40 the team in the home, the team at church, 00:25:08.44\00:25:10.61 wherever you're working on a team, 00:25:10.64\00:25:11.97 how important is prayer to true team building? 00:25:12.01\00:25:18.01 What a question. 00:25:18.05\00:25:19.55 Loaded, isn't it? 00:25:19.58\00:25:20.92 You probably already know my answer. 00:25:20.95\00:25:22.28 Let me tell you, 00:25:22.32\00:25:23.69 when I would drive, I'd pray before I left home. 00:25:23.72\00:25:28.06 So that's an indicator that prayer is for me... 00:25:28.09\00:25:30.99 Absolutely. 00:25:31.03\00:25:32.36 For me, a Christian, it is key, 00:25:32.39\00:25:36.03 it is above anything that I have shared in this segment. 00:25:36.06\00:25:40.00 Prayer is the key, prayer changes things, 00:25:40.04\00:25:43.41 prayer keeps things in balance, 00:25:43.44\00:25:45.87 prayer helps the team to accomplish more 00:25:45.91\00:25:48.41 than they ever dreamed possible. 00:25:48.44\00:25:50.81 For me, as a leader, 00:25:50.85\00:25:52.81 before any meeting with any team, 00:25:52.85\00:25:55.48 there's prayer before, 00:25:55.52\00:25:56.85 and I noticed here today, our viewers may not know, 00:25:56.89\00:25:59.45 but before your segment here on this program today, 00:25:59.49\00:26:02.22 you offered a prayer. 00:26:02.26\00:26:03.59 Yes. 00:26:03.63\00:26:04.96 A prayer for the program, a prayer for your guest today. 00:26:04.99\00:26:07.90 I just want to thank you for praying for me, 00:26:07.93\00:26:10.23 and we were praying at the same time 00:26:10.27\00:26:12.27 for all of our listening audience, 00:26:12.30\00:26:14.47 those that would be listening and viewing 00:26:14.50\00:26:16.94 because we want everything that we do 00:26:16.97\00:26:19.14 to be to the glory of God 00:26:19.17\00:26:20.68 and we want people to be blessed as a result. 00:26:20.71\00:26:22.64 So for me, a Christian, 00:26:22.68\00:26:26.31 prayer, leaving it out is not an option, 00:26:26.35\00:26:29.65 it's at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. 00:26:29.68\00:26:34.12 Amen. 00:26:34.16\00:26:35.49 First thing I do when I wake up every morning 00:26:35.52\00:26:37.53 is to fall on my knees 00:26:37.56\00:26:39.26 and thank God for another day of life. 00:26:39.29\00:26:41.86 Absolutely. 00:26:41.90\00:26:43.23 The last thing that I do before I retire for bed 00:26:43.26\00:26:46.94 is to fall on my knees and thank God for the day 00:26:46.97\00:26:51.14 and for everything that He helped me to accomplish. 00:26:51.17\00:26:53.81 So we're looking at successful team building 00:26:53.84\00:26:56.95 is having clear goals, 00:26:56.98\00:26:58.71 that's one clarity that's critical purpose, 00:26:58.75\00:27:02.58 having clearly defined roles, clear communication, 00:27:02.62\00:27:08.52 and Christ-like behavior, 00:27:08.56\00:27:10.79 and we'll stick prayer under that Christ-like behavior. 00:27:10.83\00:27:13.60 So that's four Cs I guess.
