Dr. Cynthia Powell 00:01:32.01\00:01:35.56 we're so glad that you are here with us today. 00:01:35.59\00:01:37.72 Thank you for having me, I always enjoy coming 00:01:37.75\00:01:40.58 and speaking to people about the 00:01:40.61\00:01:42.64 effects of depression. Well, first lets get 00:01:42.67\00:01:45.77 little bit of history on you what you 00:01:45.80\00:01:50.09 have a PhD explain to us your credentials. 00:01:50.12\00:01:53.48 Okay, thanks for asking, I am a psychologist 00:01:53.51\00:01:56.79 and I have a doctor degree in clinical 00:01:56.82\00:01:59.63 psychology also I spent additional time 00:01:59.66\00:02:02.60 working with the special topics with children. 00:02:02.63\00:02:09.01 I am a child psychologist by trade, 00:02:09.04\00:02:10.62 I spend additional time working with children 00:02:10.65\00:02:12.69 and then I did a sub specialty working with 00:02:12.72\00:02:15.88 abused children that have been neglected, 00:02:15.91\00:02:18.46 oh, and you know physically and sexually 00:02:18.49\00:02:20.94 abused and emotionally abused. 00:02:20.97\00:02:22.52 But depression reaches all of the sectors 00:02:22.55\00:02:26.42 you know that you know age and raise creates. 00:02:26.45\00:02:29.29 No respect of persons that's for certain. 00:02:29.32\00:02:31.74 That's for sure. I know that your life work 00:02:31.77\00:02:34.23 there must be times that when you listen 00:02:34.26\00:02:38.25 to things that are going on and you 00:02:38.28\00:02:40.85 witness things that are happening in 00:02:40.88\00:02:42.19 people's life there must be times that 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.88 even as a Christian its difficult to shake 00:02:43.91\00:02:46.85 it off and turn it over to the Lord because 00:02:46.88\00:02:48.78 that would be enough to make you sad 00:02:48.81\00:02:51.93 in your own life to hear some of these things. 00:02:51.96\00:02:54.27 It really can, can affect you I can only 00:02:54.30\00:02:57.79 equate the first month that I worked on 00:02:57.82\00:03:00.83 the unit that worked with children that 00:03:00.86\00:03:04.69 had been molested by their actual parents 00:03:04.72\00:03:07.01 and I would and I will be dating myself 00:03:07.04\00:03:10.86 yet again back in those days they had a 00:03:10.89\00:03:14.00 tape recorder that you would dictate 00:03:14.03\00:03:17.00 your notes in, so for the first thirty 00:03:17.03\00:03:19.61 days as I was driving home I was sobbing 00:03:19.64\00:03:22.14 while dictating the notes because I have 00:03:22.17\00:03:24.20 like a 30 minute period and then I would 00:03:24.23\00:03:26.11 take it in for the stenographer too, 00:03:26.14\00:03:28.52 to transpose the notes. But it can't 00:03:28.55\00:03:31.78 be so I had to really come to terms and 00:03:31.81\00:03:33.61 ask the Lord if this is the ministry you 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.65 really want me to have than you are going 00:03:35.68\00:03:37.68 to have to not take away the empathy 00:03:37.71\00:03:40.47 or sympathy, but give me the strength 00:03:40.50\00:03:43.58 to be able to endure. Amen. And to recognize 00:03:43.61\00:03:46.91 what you can change and what you have 00:03:46.94\00:03:50.00 to turnover to the Lord so that. That's right. 00:03:50.03\00:03:52.19 We have to sometimes compartment even 00:03:52.22\00:03:54.02 in ministry and this is a sad admission, 00:03:54.05\00:03:57.53 but you have to compartmentalize your 00:03:57.56\00:04:01.51 work and the things that you hear 00:04:01.54\00:04:04.04 and you have to pray and be able to 00:04:04.07\00:04:06.30 release it all that burden over on the 00:04:06.33\00:04:07.91 Lord and kind of to keep your own sanity 00:04:07.94\00:04:10.88 you have to compartmentalize and be 00:04:10.91\00:04:13.26 able to change hats I guess is a good 00:04:13.29\00:04:16.26 word to say. That's an accurate way of 00:04:16.29\00:04:19.21 explaining it because when go into a 00:04:19.24\00:04:22.55 particular settings it's like the hospital 00:04:22.58\00:04:24.28 or the clinic or you are gonna go and give 00:04:24.31\00:04:26.03 a presentation, you are not really sure 00:04:26.06\00:04:27.83 what you are going to walk into, yeah, 00:04:27.86\00:04:29.90 its true. And as being a Christian, I can 00:04:29.93\00:04:33.12 share this story this is one of my, 00:04:33.15\00:04:34.51 the second month I was intern, I walked 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.89 into a room and when I ask the patient 00:04:36.92\00:04:39.03 well how are you feeling? And they will 00:04:39.06\00:04:40.54 say obliviously okay, and then after you 00:04:40.57\00:04:43.02 start asking one more questions then you 00:04:43.05\00:04:47.08 know in which direction you are going to go. 00:04:47.11\00:04:49.05 So, I did a DIP which is draw a person, 00:04:49.08\00:04:51.81 I ask this patient to draw a person. 00:04:51.84\00:04:55.69 When he finish, he had a little demon on his 00:04:55.72\00:04:59.86 shoulder with a little pitchfork and so you 00:04:59.89\00:05:02.22 can only imagine what I was thinking, 00:05:02.25\00:05:03.85 so I than started inquiring and asking 00:05:03.88\00:05:08.94 more and more about it and so he was 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.52 speaking more and more like dissociative 00:05:10.55\00:05:12.93 and speaking more of what this demon 00:05:12.96\00:05:16.07 was telling him to do. So, being my first 00:05:16.10\00:05:18.98 time ever seeing a psychotic patient I 00:05:19.01\00:05:21.46 assume because I was you know a 00:05:21.49\00:05:23.68 Christian in the church, however, that 00:05:23.71\00:05:25.96 he was demon possessed and so I ran 00:05:25.99\00:05:28.04 out of the room and went straight to my 00:05:28.07\00:05:29.98 therapist, I mean to my supervising therapist 00:05:30.01\00:05:32.15 I said I am not going back in that room, 00:05:32.18\00:05:34.33 I can't go back and they are the demon 00:05:34.36\00:05:35.80 possessed, I am not a pastor and so. So, 00:05:35.83\00:05:38.40 that's just a little, so the Lord had did, 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.31 to really work with yes, to show you. 00:05:40.34\00:05:41.67 That, that psychosis and various mental 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.41 illnesses really have nothing. I shouldn't say 00:05:45.44\00:05:48.40 never have anything to do with demon 00:05:48.43\00:05:50.67 possession, but it's a rare thing because 00:05:50.70\00:05:52.60 they are chemical imbalances and problems. 00:05:52.63\00:05:54.78 Well, let's for our audience, let's our 00:05:54.81\00:05:58.14 topic today is depression, how would 00:05:58.17\00:06:00.88 you define depression. Well, what I want 00:06:00.91\00:06:04.07 to really explain to everyone is that sadness 00:06:04.10\00:06:06.83 and disappointment is a normal way of life 00:06:06.86\00:06:10.32 it happens to all of us and it can be, 00:06:10.35\00:06:13.42 it can occur because we've lost our job 00:06:13.45\00:06:16.34 or because we are having financial issues 00:06:16.37\00:06:18.01 or just we are upset and when that sadness 00:06:18.04\00:06:22.61 which is so normal and disappointment 00:06:22.64\00:06:25.05 that occurs persist over periods of time 00:06:25.08\00:06:28.43 and then we are having different thought 00:06:28.46\00:06:31.46 processes as where we are either with lost 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.59 interest in getting out of bed or wanting 00:06:34.62\00:06:37.68 to go to work or interacting with other 00:06:37.71\00:06:39.76 people or our self image we are starting 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.39 to feel bad about ourselves, we are 00:06:42.42\00:06:43.74 looking in the mirror and just only looking 00:06:43.77\00:06:46.09 at the negative side, not looking at the 00:06:46.12\00:06:47.86 cup being half full where I was looking 00:06:47.89\00:06:50.03 at the cup being half empty and if we 00:06:50.06\00:06:52.72 have major extremes as in sleep patterns 00:06:52.75\00:06:56.49 or in eating or in our weight or in our 00:06:56.52\00:06:59.20 sexual behavior, major you know activities 00:06:59.23\00:07:02.60 either increasing or decreasing or if we are 00:07:02.63\00:07:04.96 starting to feel hopeless and helpless 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.67 anything like there is nothing that can 00:07:06.70\00:07:09.32 make us feel better and then the more 00:07:09.35\00:07:11.30 severe part of the depressed moment 00:07:11.33\00:07:14.62 would be when people would want to end 00:07:14.65\00:07:17.00 their lives to end the pain and stuck or 00:07:17.03\00:07:20.17 possibly do self mutilation which seems 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.28 to be on the rise at this time. Very much 00:07:22.31\00:07:24.96 so particularly among the young people, 00:07:24.99\00:07:26.72 that's what I was gonna say and these 00:07:26.75\00:07:29.73 are definitely the signs of clinical depression 00:07:29.76\00:07:31.91 however if you only have one or two don't 00:07:31.94\00:07:34.89 be alarmed and run out and say oh my 00:07:34.92\00:07:36.80 goodness you know they told me today I am 00:07:36.83\00:07:38.69 clinically depressed and I must do something 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.24 because like I am saying it's a severity of it, 00:07:40.27\00:07:42.46 it's the intensity or the consistency of it. 00:07:42.49\00:07:44.95 So, is it accurate to say that depression 00:07:44.98\00:07:48.27 can be situational? Let's say that you 00:07:48.30\00:07:52.01 have lost a mate, I know when my 00:07:52.04\00:07:54.29 uncle died my precious aunt who is such 00:07:54.32\00:07:57.88 a go getter, she is such an active and up 00:07:57.91\00:08:01.95 person and she suffered some great 00:08:01.98\00:08:04.56 things in her life, but she always bounce 00:08:04.59\00:08:06.44 back and she told me I mean she continued 00:08:06.47\00:08:09.35 on with her life but she said that it took 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.17 her nearly a year to get her feet under 00:08:12.20\00:08:14.07 her and another year to walk without 00:08:14.10\00:08:15.85 wobbling, so it may have been a 00:08:15.88\00:08:18.92 situational depression as you are going 00:08:18.95\00:08:21.14 through the grieving process, the sadness 00:08:21.17\00:08:24.57 or loneliness but if depression is something 00:08:24.60\00:08:28.11 that or the sadness the loneliness, 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.61 the lack of motivation is extended for a 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.89 long period of time it can go into, 00:08:33.92\00:08:36.60 where it's effecting the brain chemistry, 00:08:36.63\00:08:38.92 right, sure, sure. And then you become 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.81 chronically depressed and they call it 00:08:40.84\00:08:43.58 what is that clinical depression at that point. 00:08:43.61\00:08:46.82 Clinical depression, I can go into major 00:08:46.85\00:08:48.03 depression and I am glad that you brought 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.42 up the issue of when you lose a loved one 00:08:49.45\00:08:52.80 especially couples that have been married 00:08:52.83\00:08:54.38 for years and people that are depending 00:08:54.41\00:08:57.57 upon each other and that's their support, 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.95 that's their person, the go to person that 00:08:59.98\00:09:03.48 they go to when they need to speak, 00:09:03.51\00:09:04.83 talk to someone like in the middle of the night 00:09:04.86\00:09:06.89 or if they just want to share something 00:09:06.92\00:09:12.02 they have heard or seen or if they are 00:09:12.05\00:09:13.39 having issues what is that person do? 00:09:13.42\00:09:15.70 You know during that time, so they have 00:09:15.73\00:09:18.28 that void, they have that vacuum and 00:09:18.31\00:09:20.15 if they don't fill it with something then 00:09:20.18\00:09:22.89 it can go into a far serious levels of 00:09:22.92\00:09:26.37 depression and clinically we really 00:09:26.40\00:09:29.48 look at it six months up to two years that 00:09:29.51\00:09:33.49 a person can really go through that, 00:09:33.52\00:09:35.00 that process after they have lost 00:09:35.03\00:09:37.97 their loved one. Yes, yes. Now, what 00:09:38.00\00:09:40.57 about people who, I have a friend whose 00:09:40.60\00:09:43.65 daughter most recently went through 00:09:43.68\00:09:47.70 I mean she was very active at church she 00:09:47.73\00:09:52.73 was, she held on a full time position 00:09:52.76\00:09:55.04 with the government office. She is God 00:09:55.07\00:09:59.14 grown children, but suddenly there was a 00:09:59.17\00:10:02.14 change in her behavior and she wanted to 00:10:02.17\00:10:06.33 sleep all the time, she started having the lot 00:10:06.36\00:10:08.73 of headaches, they went through various studies, 00:10:08.76\00:10:11.68 medical studies, to see if there was a 00:10:11.71\00:10:15.03 physiological reason but she got to the 00:10:15.06\00:10:19.26 point that over a period you could just 00:10:19.29\00:10:21.85 see how she was on this downhill slide 00:10:21.88\00:10:26.02 for over a year and then for about two 00:10:26.05\00:10:29.46 years she got into such a serious depression 00:10:29.49\00:10:33.26 that medication didn't help, they tried even 00:10:33.29\00:10:36.76 shock treatments didn't help, they done 00:10:36.79\00:10:39.90 many things now praise God. Now, 00:10:39.93\00:10:43.42 she has come back up was like the pendulum 00:10:43.45\00:10:46.88 has swung the other way and she is 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.35 doing much better. What is the physiological 00:10:48.38\00:10:53.74 happenings in the brain? What's happening 00:10:53.77\00:10:55.49 when a person gets depressed? What actually 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.33 causes depression? Some people can suffer 00:10:58.36\00:11:01.38 the loss of a job and not get depressed. 00:11:01.41\00:11:04.45 They may be sad some people it can be just 00:11:04.48\00:11:07.26 the factor that trips them up, there are so 00:11:07.29\00:11:11.82 many different levels and reasons for the 00:11:11.85\00:11:15.29 depression but definitely chemical imbalance, 00:11:15.32\00:11:17.55 there is hormonal imbalances. Definitely 00:11:17.58\00:11:20.47 before anyone should really go and have, 00:11:20.50\00:11:25.40 they should have a physical, a complete 00:11:25.43\00:11:27.46 physical, Amen. Before they actually 00:11:27.49\00:11:29.91 say for sure they are totally clinically 00:11:29.94\00:11:31.69 depressed and most therapists and 00:11:31.72\00:11:32.96 psychiatrists will recommend that 00:11:32.99\00:11:35.13 because if you have a thyroid condition. 00:11:35.16\00:11:38.76 I mean you could be sitting in the 00:11:38.79\00:11:40.74 emergency room and they are getting 00:11:40.77\00:11:42.75 ready to hospitalize you, I have seen 00:11:42.78\00:11:44.34 it before and they are just overlooking 00:11:44.37\00:11:46.68 something so simple just look at the labs, 00:11:46.71\00:11:48.39 look at the levels, look at the imbalances 00:11:48.42\00:11:50.92 that can be in the brain as you have 00:11:50.95\00:11:52.07 said before or there could just be hormonal 00:11:52.10\00:11:54.46 imbalances, there lot of us pre-golden 00:11:54.49\00:11:57.09 girls or even golden girls, but you not 00:11:57.12\00:11:59.41 have to bring out that, just hormonal 00:11:59.44\00:12:02.33 something so simple you know, right. 00:12:02.36\00:12:04.95 You just look at the labs, just look at the 00:12:04.98\00:12:07.43 levels and there are medications or even 00:12:07.46\00:12:11.80 psychotropic medications or anti-anxiety 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.77 medications, they are just regular medications 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.36 that your OB/GYN or your family practitioner 00:12:16.39\00:12:20.20 or your endocrinologist could you know 00:12:20.23\00:12:24.32 can prescribe for you. You know, 00:12:24.35\00:12:26.15 I am wonder that we have had this discussion 00:12:26.18\00:12:28.29 because I recently had a thyroid condition 00:12:28.32\00:12:31.31 myself and for a period of months I didn't feel 00:12:31.34\00:12:36.27 depressed I wasn't sad, I was still very 00:12:36.30\00:12:38.79 active but the joy the motivation, I mean 00:12:38.82\00:12:42.98 my life is so overscheduled and 00:12:43.01\00:12:45.02 and overcommitted that I am constantly 00:12:45.05\00:12:47.61 going from one thing to another and I was 00:12:47.64\00:12:49.71 still in motion but what happened was I had 00:12:49.74\00:12:53.53 a tendency to wait till the very last 00:12:53.56\00:12:55.38 second to do something because I didn't 00:12:55.41\00:12:57.51 have the joy of preparation that I used 00:12:57.54\00:13:00.40 to have and when I was talking with my 00:13:00.43\00:13:02.54 doctor I said I don't think I am depressed, 00:13:02.57\00:13:05.87 but for some reason I am just, my motivation 00:13:05.90\00:13:10.38 is down and it turned out that my thyroid 00:13:10.41\00:13:13.46 was just that we have just caught it 00:13:13.49\00:13:15.46 before it completely crashed, great, 00:13:15.49\00:13:17.80 so there are things that happen in our 00:13:17.83\00:13:20.52 bodies that can affect this and I am glad 00:13:20.55\00:13:22.53 you brought out that people need to have 00:13:22.56\00:13:24.38 that serious physical exam before you 00:13:24.41\00:13:29.39 start taking the other drugs that are available, 00:13:29.42\00:13:32.16 definitely. And I am not wanting to be an 00:13:32.19\00:13:35.48 alarmist, but I think that you really need to 00:13:35.51\00:13:37.80 know yourself, you need to know your body 00:13:37.83\00:13:39.35 and like you were the first to say before 00:13:39.38\00:13:41.47 someone could say, you know you are 00:13:41.50\00:13:43.88 looking pretty sad, you are looking pretty 00:13:43.91\00:13:45.30 you know dysthymia or melancholy that 00:13:45.33\00:13:47.81 you knew something was changed, 00:13:47.84\00:13:49.49 you didn't really know what it was but 00:13:49.52\00:13:51.23 you know your affect, your mood was 00:13:51.26\00:13:52.65 so different. Yeah, yes. And I want to for 00:13:52.68\00:13:55.82 some reason I feel impressed to say this 00:13:55.85\00:13:57.60 right now we are handling this kind of on 00:13:57.63\00:14:01.03 a superficial level, but I feel like right now 00:14:01.06\00:14:03.78 there is somebody that's watching who may 00:14:03.81\00:14:06.53 think that you are beyond hope and that its 00:14:06.56\00:14:11.71 something that you feel like life is hopeless and 00:14:11.74\00:14:15.18 you are ready to take your life. Please, please 00:14:15.21\00:14:18.85 listen to the rest of this program because 00:14:18.88\00:14:20.62 my mother tried to commit suicide several times 00:14:20.65\00:14:24.31 and she got into that point of feeling hopeless 00:14:24.34\00:14:28.51 and the interesting thing is there is so many 00:14:28.54\00:14:31.22 times when people, when there is an 00:14:31.25\00:14:33.28 intervention in suicide that the person who is 00:14:33.31\00:14:35.90 considering taking their life if you can 00:14:35.93\00:14:39.46 intervene that within 24 hours that thoughts 00:14:39.49\00:14:44.04 gone from their head and they will never 00:14:44.07\00:14:46.11 try it again. Now, when we get to that 00:14:46.14\00:14:50.10 level of being suicidal if someone is speaking 00:14:50.13\00:14:55.22 of suicide, someone is thinking of suicide 00:14:55.25\00:14:58.67 what do we do? Well, I would recommend as to 00:14:58.70\00:15:02.36 get them intervention immediately, take them 00:15:02.39\00:15:04.88 to the hospital, take them to a doctor so 00:15:04.91\00:15:06.91 that someone can actually talk to them 00:15:06.94\00:15:09.22 further to see if it's a suicidal idea or a 00:15:09.25\00:15:12.22 suicidal ideation or if they would had a 00:15:12.25\00:15:14.42 suicidal attempt because some people may 00:15:14.45\00:15:16.79 say oh I just, I am not feeling well today 00:15:16.82\00:15:19.25 I just would like to die than someone else 00:15:19.28\00:15:22.04 may say I have these bottle of pills and I am 00:15:22.07\00:15:25.70 going into the kitchen, I am gonna you know, 00:15:25.73\00:15:27.19 I don't want to give suggestions or ideas 00:15:27.22\00:15:29.22 but you know that they might want to end 00:15:29.25\00:15:32.33 their lives that way or someone may say you 00:15:32.36\00:15:35.45 know here's my risk I have already tried 00:15:35.48\00:15:37.48 this and this or you know how come I woke up, 00:15:37.51\00:15:40.26 I took this bottle of pills so you definitely 00:15:40.29\00:15:43.20 would like someone a health professional or 00:15:43.23\00:15:45.89 mental health professional to be able 00:15:45.92\00:15:47.05 to intervene with that and what we are 00:15:47.08\00:15:49.64 also need to know is because we have to go 00:15:49.67\00:15:52.96 outside of our comfort zone like speaking 00:15:52.99\00:15:55.74 to our pastor or family or friends it doesn't 00:15:55.77\00:15:58.28 mean that we are less of a Christian or 00:15:58.31\00:16:00.95 that our walk with Christ is any less. 00:16:00.98\00:16:02.80 Oh! Cynthia I am so glad you said that because 00:16:02.83\00:16:05.68 what I have found is that many Christians 00:16:05.71\00:16:08.48 feel guilty for being depressed and you know 00:16:08.51\00:16:12.04 I also want to say this that sometimes pastors 00:16:12.07\00:16:14.94 are not really trained in handling that 00:16:14.97\00:16:17.80 and may be your husband or your wife or 00:16:17.83\00:16:20.57 your spouse or maybe a parent is telling 00:16:20.60\00:16:23.25 you snap out of it, you know come out of 00:16:23.28\00:16:25.82 this you don't need to mope around all the time 00:16:25.85\00:16:28.69 and its impossible for people to snap out of it 00:16:28.72\00:16:32.88 if they are clinically depressed. So, depression 00:16:32.91\00:16:36.03 is not, is not a mental condition so much 00:16:36.06\00:16:40.56 as it is a physiological condition, it's an illness 00:16:40.59\00:16:43.86 is it not? It's an illness just like hypertension 00:16:43.89\00:16:47.51 or like cancer or like diabetes. It's just 00:16:47.54\00:16:51.15 an illness that recently people are coming 00:16:51.18\00:16:54.46 to terms with and saying that there is no 00:16:54.49\00:16:56.54 shame in having a mental disorder because 00:16:56.57\00:17:00.40 if I told you I was hypertensive and my 00:17:00.43\00:17:02.89 medication wasn't working and I would ask 00:17:02.92\00:17:05.71 you for advise but if I had a mental illness 00:17:05.74\00:17:08.40 nine times out of ten I wouldn't tell you that 00:17:08.43\00:17:10.62 and I wouldn't share what type of medications 00:17:10.65\00:17:12.28 that I was taking, I guess you even use 00:17:12.31\00:17:13.65 the words like depression and mental illness 00:17:13.68\00:17:15.56 and equating that its like wait, yeah, 00:17:15.59\00:17:18.34 you know, you are trying say that I am 00:17:18.37\00:17:19.79 mentally ill and when you are mentally depressed 00:17:19.82\00:17:23.19 then what can we say it is something that 00:17:23.22\00:17:27.33 is effecting the mind and often it is chemical. 00:17:27.36\00:17:29.98 Now, for that very reason I have interviewed 00:17:30.01\00:17:32.74 a number of doctors who believe, Christian 00:17:32.77\00:17:36.19 doctors, who are trying to do a way 00:17:36.22\00:17:40.10 with the idea and put to rest I should say 00:17:40.13\00:17:45.03 the myth that it is wrong for a Christian 00:17:45.06\00:17:49.72 to take an antidepressant would you how 00:17:49.75\00:17:53.12 do you feel about that? What role do 00:17:53.15\00:17:56.10 antidepressants play in treatment? I see it 00:17:56.13\00:18:00.60 as a major stabilizer because the one thing 00:18:00.63\00:18:03.15 is you don't want the patient to continue 00:18:03.18\00:18:04.75 spiraling out of control and if you are 00:18:04.78\00:18:07.73 constantly feeling worthless, hopeless 00:18:07.76\00:18:10.21 and useless, the goal is to elevate you to 00:18:10.24\00:18:14.25 make you feel better, to make you feel as 00:18:14.28\00:18:16.69 normal as you possibly can and to keep you 00:18:16.72\00:18:19.36 from wanting to harm yourself. And is it not 00:18:19.39\00:18:22.57 true I was, I remember Dr Neil Nedley many 00:18:22.60\00:18:25.23 of our audience members will be familiar with 00:18:25.26\00:18:29.07 that name and he has written a book called 00:18:29.10\00:18:32.14 Depression The Way Out and he says that 00:18:32.17\00:18:36.50 when the serotonin level is so low that 00:18:36.53\00:18:39.05 sometimes it is absolutely necessity to put 00:18:39.08\00:18:42.53 people on an antidepressant which then 00:18:42.56\00:18:45.71 helps this the production of serotonin and 00:18:45.74\00:18:49.75 then once you get them up to a normal level 00:18:49.78\00:18:52.36 now you can start treating them with 00:18:52.39\00:18:54.08 cognitive behavioral therapy and whatever, 00:18:54.11\00:18:57.28 you know the idea of positive thinking but you 00:18:57.31\00:19:00.30 can't reach them when they are that low. So, 00:19:00.33\00:19:03.14 you have to get them as you said stabilize, 00:19:03.17\00:19:05.68 okay, and then you can start even possibly 00:19:05.71\00:19:08.16 weaning them off that medication but its not 00:19:08.19\00:19:11.48 something that just happens by itself, 00:19:11.51\00:19:13.66 is that right? You are absolutely right, and 00:19:13.69\00:19:15.82 it is just like hormonal levels and you can 00:19:15.85\00:19:17.93 always test those, you know going to your 00:19:17.96\00:19:20.32 physician also and having lab work done 00:19:20.35\00:19:23.33 but you are absolutely right with those 00:19:23.36\00:19:25.65 levels because if you can't get people 00:19:25.68\00:19:27.57 up to the level that they need to be than they 00:19:27.60\00:19:29.46 are not gonna be able to receive the additional 00:19:29.49\00:19:31.49 type of treatment. Okay. So, what about, 00:19:31.52\00:19:34.48 what I am hearing a lot of lately is people 00:19:34.51\00:19:38.96 who are having anxiety attacks, how do 00:19:38.99\00:19:42.70 anxiety attacks tie in with depression, can it 00:19:42.73\00:19:48.31 lead to depression or what is causing 00:19:48.34\00:19:50.24 the anxiety of that? Well, unfortunately 00:19:50.27\00:19:51.90 almost everything kind a leads to that level, 00:19:51.93\00:19:54.39 okay, of depression and its anything that 00:19:54.42\00:19:57.08 is excessive but once again go back to the 00:19:57.11\00:20:00.68 hormones, go back to your other levels of 00:20:00.71\00:20:03.57 chemicals within your bodies to see and 00:20:03.60\00:20:06.90 also reduce the pressure and the stress 00:20:06.93\00:20:10.17 in your life because that can trigger anxiety. 00:20:10.20\00:20:13.35 I tell women all the time wherever I go hang up 00:20:13.38\00:20:16.86 your supergirl suit you know, I mean we 00:20:16.89\00:20:19.95 multitask all the time, all the time hang up 00:20:19.98\00:20:23.37 that suit because that can lead to anxiety, 00:20:23.40\00:20:25.89 overwhelmingness just listening to your 00:20:25.92\00:20:27.52 schedule that you are gonna be doing within 00:20:27.55\00:20:28.81 the next 24 hours would overwhelm 00:20:28.84\00:20:31.80 some people but you are able to balance 00:20:31.83\00:20:34.81 it and handle it very well. I mean you look 00:20:34.84\00:20:36.91 very gracious you know, you are tried, 00:20:36.94\00:20:41.02 but the average person might not be able 00:20:41.05\00:20:43.84 to handle that and that would put them 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.58 into an anxiety attack and then they 00:20:45.61\00:20:47.29 might start having some of the 00:20:47.32\00:20:49.57 symptomatology which would be the headaches, 00:20:49.60\00:20:53.04 the clamminess in the hands, the dizziness, 00:20:53.07\00:20:57.05 the just overwhelmingness you know, yeah. 00:20:57.08\00:21:00.24 So, if let's talk about because we want to give 00:21:00.27\00:21:04.78 you hope today there are so many people 00:21:04.81\00:21:06.88 that you know life can be overwhelming 00:21:06.91\00:21:09.42 and particularly with the economic down turn 00:21:09.45\00:21:11.61 it seems that we are seeing many more calls 00:21:11.64\00:21:14.58 to 3ABN about issues of depression people 00:21:14.61\00:21:18.33 who are sad besides number one if there is 00:21:18.36\00:21:22.82 someone in your family you are a loved one 00:21:22.85\00:21:25.41 who are feeling this way, I have talked with a 00:21:25.44\00:21:28.61 lady the other day praise the Lord who had a 00:21:28.64\00:21:31.23 suicidal thought and she said as soon as 00:21:31.26\00:21:34.75 she did she just was impressed by the lord 00:21:34.78\00:21:36.81 to drive herself to the hospital, which doesn't 00:21:36.84\00:21:39.58 always happen but then she went to the hospital 00:21:39.61\00:21:42.59 and within 48 hours she had gone beyond 00:21:42.62\00:21:46.34 that crisis. Now, she is seeing a Christian 00:21:46.37\00:21:50.26 physiologist, excellent, and she is in treatment 00:21:50.29\00:21:52.91 and doing much, much better. If you are truly a major clinical depressed 00:22:24.23\00:22:27.23 person I would still recommend the medication 00:22:27.26\00:22:30.24 if I could, right starting with that, the 00:22:30.27\00:22:31.99 medication and then get in a support group, okay. 00:22:32.02\00:22:35.58 And then have a therapist you can see 00:22:35.61\00:22:38.69 a psychiatrist, social worker, psychologist, 00:22:38.72\00:22:40.98 marriage, family, child counselor they are 00:22:41.01\00:22:43.03 more than capable of helping you with how 00:22:43.06\00:22:46.29 to function and process within your day because 00:22:46.32\00:22:50.16 that's how we want to lift people up. So that, 00:22:50.19\00:22:53.04 they can function and become productive 00:22:53.07\00:22:55.72 citizens as they used to be and have a normal 00:22:55.75\00:22:58.06 pattern and normal activities, also get 00:22:58.09\00:23:01.39 yourself involved with support groups with 00:23:01.42\00:23:03.48 church groups, I tell you if you ever want to fill 00:23:03.51\00:23:07.06 loved and needed go and tell someone, hey 00:23:07.09\00:23:11.20 I have free time what can I do? Churches have 00:23:11.23\00:23:13.80 different ministries, Amen. Amen. 00:23:13.83\00:23:15.96 And you know I think that prayer if 00:23:15.99\00:23:19.29 getting involved with people who will pray 00:23:19.32\00:23:21.18 with you, definitely, learning to turn your 00:23:21.21\00:23:23.02 problems over to the Lord, learning to claim 00:23:23.05\00:23:25.46 the promises of God if you are going to. 00:23:25.49\00:23:27.37 If you want to take those negative thoughts 00:23:27.40\00:23:29.92 captive and make them obedient to the 00:23:29.95\00:23:32.13 will of the Lord. If you get the promises of 00:23:32.16\00:23:34.78 God in your heart and kind of to overcome 00:23:34.81\00:23:39.59 your negative thought get God thoughts in 00:23:39.62\00:23:42.40 your heart, definitely, and that can really 00:23:42.43\00:23:43.74 be helpful can it not. Definitely. And be 00:23:43.77\00:23:46.24 careful who you associate with. And so what 00:23:46.27\00:23:49.17 you are saying is, if you are feeling in a 00:23:49.20\00:23:50.98 melancholy mood and you have a friend who is 00:23:51.01\00:23:53.59 always down in the mouth in melancholy, 00:23:53.62\00:23:56.25 a negative that can, attitudes are contiguous 00:23:56.28\00:23:59.90 like that. Oh! Definitely, definitely. So, 00:23:59.93\00:24:02.40 find someone that's just the opposite. Yeah, 00:24:02.43\00:24:04.44 that's very positive and very active. If that's 00:24:04.47\00:24:08.20 not gonna you know overwhelming, 00:24:08.23\00:24:11.88 definitely if you aren't able to handle the 00:24:11.91\00:24:13.89 schedule but definitely be around uplifting people. 00:24:13.92\00:24:16.89 Let me ask you this question because we just 00:24:16.92\00:24:18.99 have a few more minutes but are there 00:24:19.02\00:24:20.80 certain people who are more prone to depression 00:24:20.83\00:24:23.91 and are there certain people who are more 00:24:23.94\00:24:26.35 resistant to treatment because I do know 00:24:26.38\00:24:29.18 when you are talking about going to therapy 00:24:29.21\00:24:30.90 I have talked with so many people who been 00:24:30.93\00:24:33.62 to a therapist and said ah! You know, 00:24:33.65\00:24:35.90 it was just nearly life changing for them. 00:24:35.93\00:24:38.03 We have a friend who was having anxiety attacks 00:24:38.06\00:24:42.26 and it turned out that a project he was working 00:24:42.29\00:24:45.42 on in just a recent year connected in his brain to 00:24:45.45\00:24:51.84 something he had worked on like 15 years ago 00:24:51.87\00:24:54.97 that was a very, it was a project where he 00:24:55.00\00:24:58.21 saw a lot of trauma, where he stuffed it, 00:24:58.24\00:25:00.80 he didn't get deprogrammed from the 00:25:00.83\00:25:03.78 horrendous things he had seen and so now 00:25:03.81\00:25:06.40 working on a similar project kind of opened 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.10 up things for his past but for men in particular 00:25:09.13\00:25:12.65 it seems that women are anxious to talk 00:25:12.68\00:25:15.94 out their problems, yes, but is it more difficult 00:25:15.97\00:25:18.73 for a man to go and admit that he need 00:25:18.76\00:25:21.12 somebody to talk to. Lots of times because men 00:25:21.15\00:25:24.17 are the head of the household, men are always 00:25:24.20\00:25:25.96 in charge. Men feel that if they show that side 00:25:25.99\00:25:29.78 of them then everything will fall apart and 00:25:29.81\00:25:32.45 then people will think less of them a lot of 00:25:32.48\00:25:35.12 the times and especially when you are talking 00:25:35.15\00:25:36.85 about mental illness. If you just talk about 00:25:36.88\00:25:38.68 regular health more women visit the 00:25:38.71\00:25:42.91 physician or a therapist than men do. 00:25:42.94\00:25:45.10 Lots of time we just see men in the emergency 00:25:45.13\00:25:48.39 room and they have to see you versus then 00:25:48.42\00:25:51.94 when they just wanna do preventative things 00:25:51.97\00:25:53.87 but women will ran to the physician quite a 00:25:53.90\00:25:56.15 bit you know just for prevention, so you are 00:25:56.18\00:25:58.36 absolutely right and you also mentioned 00:25:58.39\00:26:01.52 like the trigger point for this particular person 00:26:01.55\00:26:04.00 with something that he has suppressed 00:26:04.03\00:26:05.97 for years and years. So, that's why lots 00:26:06.00\00:26:08.35 of times when you go for therapy you go and 00:26:08.38\00:26:10.69 you have regressive therapy, where they 00:26:10.72\00:26:12.55 always say tell me about your childhood 00:26:12.58\00:26:14.28 because that is pretty crusade and you see it 00:26:14.31\00:26:16.87 almost in every movie and people are lying 00:26:16.90\00:26:18.36 on the sofas, but it really tells you about 00:26:18.39\00:26:22.10 the adult that you are seeing clinically 00:26:22.13\00:26:25.28 and all this. Are they are more women 00:26:25.31\00:26:26.35 depressed then men or do we see any 00:26:26.38\00:26:28.78 I mean as we said it effects all 00:26:28.81\00:26:32.33 nationalities, its effects all social and 00:26:32.36\00:26:35.00 economic situations but, and the answer to that 00:26:35.03\00:26:38.91 question is the reason that we see at least as 00:26:38.94\00:26:41.54 this is my belief that we see more women 00:26:41.57\00:26:44.18 as far as you know the CTC was stated that the 00:26:44.21\00:26:47.43 more women that are clinically depressed 00:26:47.46\00:26:48.78 because more of us are going to the doctors. So, 00:26:48.81\00:26:51.10 we are more you know they are regulating us 00:26:51.13\00:26:55.59 more and so the doctors are reporting that 00:26:55.62\00:26:57.60 there are more women at that time. You know 00:26:57.63\00:26:59.62 Cynthia, I can't believe that our time is already 00:26:59.65\00:27:02.14 gone and I feel like we just barely touched 00:27:02.17\00:27:04.83 on this, you we will come back and talk 00:27:04.86\00:27:06.64 with us some more on this topic will you not? 00:27:06.67\00:27:08.66 Of course, thank you so much and thank you 00:27:08.69\00:27:11.18 for being here and I just admire you the 00:27:11.21\00:27:14.58 work that you have done in your life and 00:27:14.61\00:27:16.85 continue to do and I know it hasn't always 00:27:16.88\00:27:18.84 been easy. Thank you so much for having me. 00:27:18.87\00:27:21.84 We are very blessed, again we just want 00:27:21.87\00:27:25.50 to encourage you if you are feeling 00:27:25.53\00:27:28.32 overwhelmed talk to a pastor, talk to a friend, 00:27:28.35\00:27:31.54 go to your doctor, find out if you need 00:27:31.57\00:27:35.26 to have a medical exam, check the thyroid, 00:27:35.29\00:27:37.88 check out what's going on in your life. 00:27:37.91\00:27:39.86 It could well be that, that life is just 00:27:39.89\00:27:43.17 overwhelming you by problems and this is 00:27:43.20\00:27:44.92 the situational temporary thing but if you 00:27:44.95\00:27:48.71 had been suffering a feeling of sadness or 00:27:48.74\00:27:51.39 loss of motivation or just feeling like you 00:27:51.42\00:27:54.59 don't know if you can go on with life very long, 00:27:54.62\00:27:57.90 you need help and please reach out and get 00:27:57.93\00:28:01.54 that help and don't think that you could 00:28:01.57\00:28:03.81 just pull yourself up by your bootstraps, but 00:28:03.84\00:28:06.45 remember to pray turn that burden over to the Lord 00:28:06.48\00:28:09.32 and ask him to lead you to someone who 00:28:09.35\00:28:11.84 can help you today, thanks for joining us. 00:28:11.87\00:28:14.15
