that is a little more current,

story from Europe.

A friend of mine by the
name of Dr. Michael Hassle,

whose father used to
be Dean of the school of,

at the Seminary,
Dean of the Seminary.

They told this story
in Mississippi last year,

and I was so
incredibly blessed by it,

it was just such a great story,

don't tell him this,

he teaches in the
school of archeology.

And I always thought,
oh, how dull, how boring,

how can anybody be interested
in that kind of stuff.

him speak a few times,

year when he was,

I think at sophomore in college,

he decided that he wanted
to go to Bogenhofen in Austria,

college work over there

for one year, so he did that.

About Thanksgiving, he
got a call from his parents

Springs and they said,

we have planned a wonderful
Christmas holiday break

for you, so you can come home

and spend Christmas with
your family and extended family.

Now the thing that made
this so appealing to Michael

was that, all, that whole fall,

they'd had
nothing, but dreary, gloomy,

foggy, and rainy days.
00:03:30.43\00:03:32.96
He said, it was horrible.

And so, why
wouldn't he jump up and down
00:03:35.35\00:03:38.87
because they told him, they
were planning a family break

and vacation at
Key Largo in Florida,

sandy beach,
sunshine, and, you know,
00:03:47.03\00:03:50.30
it's just the opposite of
what he had been experiencing.

So he said, well dad, let
me think it over and he said,

I'm enjoying being
here with my grandfather,

but that sounds great.

And his father said,
well, we'll call you back

in two hours and we'll
get the airline tickets.

So, for some reason
he did not have peace,

he was troubled by this.

He went over to the girl's
dorm and picked up his cousin.

He had the only car
in the family on campus.

And so he had
promised to take her

and her girlfriend shopping.

So he picked them up
and he went into her room

and he said, you know,
I just had a phone call

from my parents and they want
me to come home for Christmas,

but I don't know
if I should go or not.

And she said,
Michael, have you prayed?

And he said, here she
was a junior or senior

in high school
and she was asking me,

a college theology
major if I had prayed.

He said, I had to
tell her, no, I hadn't.

So he said, she
told me, all right,

let's kneel down
here and pray about this.

So they did and she
said, God just give him wisdom,

he doesn't know what to do.

Well, it seem to him
like this was a no brainier,

I mean, where he had been

and where he had
an opportunity to go

and he missed his family,
so he really wanted to go home.

He took the girls down shopping

and he went to
his favorite store

which was a huge
sporting good store.

And he said, all the
time that he was there,

he couldn't concentrate,

he was just walking
up and down the aisles

and nothing interested him.

And so he said, well, you know,

he didn't do anything, he
finally picked up the girls

and took them back to campus.

As he was walking
into the dormitory,

the phone was ringing
and it was his father.

So he ran to the
phone and he said, dad,

I've been thinking
about this ever since.

And his mother was on
the phone this time too

prayed about this,

Now his
grandfather was a great man.

He had been a hero
in the Second World War,

and had been
treated very, very badly.

Hitler's regime, you
know, nobody was a winner,

everybody was
treated very badly,

but he, maybe you've
seen the book written,

I think it's a
Thousand Shall Fall. Yes.

It's written
about him, great man.

And he said, I just
think I'll spend Christmas,

you know, with my grandfather.

Well, his parents
could not believe it.

They said, this is
strange, I can't believe,

why you would want to do this?

We, you know, you've
seen your grandfather,

you can go home to
his place on weekends,

but we haven't
gotten to see you,

And he said, no I just

and when he said
that he had peace.

His mother said, son we

And Michael's
father Gerard also said,

grandfather all the time.

And Michael said, no,

I just think I'm gonna
stay here for Christmas.

So they hung up the
phone, talked a little bit more

and then he walked
away, but he had peace,

why, but he had peace.

And then he went to his
grandfather for Christmas.

During the Christmas
break, he got another

long distance phone
call from his parents.

This time, his father
sounded visibly shaken.

He said, Michael,
your mother and I had

your plane
reservations on Pan American 102

that was the plan that went
down in Lockerbie, Scotland.

Wow! And he
said, as I heard that,

suddenly, you know, I was
just breaking out in cold sweat,
00:08:39.21\00:08:44.65
thinking, I could
be dead right now.
00:08:44.66\00:08:49.47
But God intervened and
did something wonderful
00:08:49.48\00:08:53.43
in my life. So he said,
00:08:53.44\00:08:55.99
now everyday I go
to the Lord and I say,
00:08:56.00\00:08:58.11
Lord, strengthen my
faith and help me to see,
00:08:58.12\00:09:02.49
why you spared my life? Yeah.

So, you know, God
is still working. Yes.

And George Muller in Prussia

it was then where he was born,

then came to
Eastern Germany to study

and then came to England.

And tell us a little
bit about what he did,

this is such exciting stuff.

Yes, he is the one
of my heroes of faith.

lives in a day and age

where no one prayed.

That's right. No
one have faith in God.

That's right. They believed God

was out there, but
that God did not interfere.

the lives of men.

That's right. And it was God

who inspired him to pray.

For the orphans. Right.

But he said, there are
thousands of orphans starving

on the streets or they
would take them into the jails

or the mental asylums as
they called them then horrible,

horrible places for
these children to have to live,

but at least they had
some food and a place to sleep.

But he said, as much as I
want to help these orphans,

the reason that I'm
doing this is to prove

that God answers prayers. Yes.

Not, that was his second,
the orphans were secondary,

but the first reason
while he prayed was--

For God's glory.

For people to see that
God answers prayer. Yes.

So what, what, tell us
a little bit about that.

What it got you
excited about that?

It's exciting to know
that that there is this God,

who truly owns the
cattle on thousand hills.

the silver and gold and,

who not only come
through in a mighty way

for certain individuals, but,
God gives His promises to us.

when we stepped out

on faith and we're
able to exercise our faith,

we're able to grow,
and we're able to see

God come through for us.

beginning of his journey,

he was only, he would
ask God for little amounts,

of course later on in life
that he was able to ask God.

that's how it is for us.

grow little by little.

amazing how in his lifetime

equivalent of $180 million.

it, he didn't hold it,

buildings, of course,

and to pay the staff. Yeah.

money overseas. Yeah.

So, it was an exciting thing.

at the beginning of that work.

decided they were going to give

And people told him he
was crazy for doing that

because nobody
had very much money,

but he got more something
like four or five times more

have, if he had relied on

But when he felt that
the Lord was leading him

he prayed for silverware,

bedding, for tower, everything,

he prayed for every, and he
kept meticulous records. Yeah.

Amazing! But
they went down there

to the house on Wilson
Street and not one child came.

Do you remember
that? Not one child came.

And he was so disappointed,
but his wife Mary said to him,

and she was
laughing, she said, George,

you prayed
about everything else,

but you didn't ask the
Lord to send you children.

I just assumed that
the Lord would know that

I was doing
this for the children

and He would send the children.

But he learned from that,

stories is later on in life.

He spent a lot of time
traveling around the world,

he is supposed to make it

And he spoke to the
captain and the captain says,

And he says, well I've

a secular career.
