We're glad to see you. 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 And today, we are going to talk about 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.83 something really important. 00:00:04.84\00:00:07.44 It impacts all of our lives, a great man of faith, 00:00:07.45\00:00:11.56 and somebody that can be a great lesson to all of us. 00:00:11.57\00:00:14.68 We'll be right back. 00:00:14.69\00:00:15.67 Welcome to "Issues & Answers." 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.81 Today is one of my very, very favorite programs. 00:00:42.82\00:00:47.11 A man who is such a giant of a man of God, 00:00:47.12\00:00:51.35 I love the stories of his faith. 00:00:51.36\00:00:54.78 They have always encouraged me for years. 00:00:54.79\00:00:57.71 And this is one of my very favorite programs. 00:00:57.72\00:01:00.67 I hope it will bless you too. 00:01:00.68\00:01:03.62 This is the story of the life of George Muller. 00:01:03.63\00:01:07.73 He accomplished amazing, incredible things 00:01:07.74\00:01:11.74 in the City of Bristol, England. 00:01:11.75\00:01:14.07 I've been there, maybe you have too. 00:01:14.08\00:01:16.54 And today there are five huge stone buildings 00:01:16.55\00:01:21.00 that are still there as a silent monument 00:01:21.01\00:01:25.64 to the power of prayer, and the faith of one man. 00:01:25.65\00:01:30.16 It is just incredible what God will do 00:01:30.17\00:01:33.19 and it should be an encouragement for us all. 00:01:33.20\00:01:35.63 I'd like for you to meet my guest, 00:01:35.64\00:01:37.82 Liana and Martin Kim from Berrien Springs, Michigan, 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.25 and you like this man too, don't you? Yes. 00:01:41.26\00:01:44.16 I love stories of faith, I love stories of prayer. 00:01:44.17\00:01:48.38 Before we go to George Muller, 00:01:48.39\00:01:50.23 I want to tell you something that is a little more current, 00:01:50.24\00:01:54.11 but it is also a story from Europe. 00:01:54.12\00:01:57.44 A friend of mine by the name of Dr. Michael Hassle, 00:01:57.45\00:02:00.68 whose father used to be Dean of the school of, 00:02:00.69\00:02:03.96 at the Seminary, Dean of the Seminary. 00:02:03.97\00:02:06.80 They told this story in Mississippi last year, 00:02:06.81\00:02:10.42 and I was so incredibly blessed by it, 00:02:10.43\00:02:13.91 it was just such a great story, 00:02:13.92\00:02:15.91 don't tell him this, 00:02:15.92\00:02:17.18 he teaches in the school of archeology. 00:02:17.19\00:02:19.74 And I always thought, oh, how dull, how boring, 00:02:19.75\00:02:23.49 how can anybody be interested in that kind of stuff. 00:02:23.50\00:02:27.21 Old rocks and buildings and stuff, you know, 00:02:27.22\00:02:31.71 how can you get interested in that dry stuff? 00:02:31.72\00:02:34.43 But after I heard him speak a few times, 00:02:34.44\00:02:36.57 I thought, wow, this is really interesting 00:02:36.58\00:02:41.22 and I got very enthusiastic for his field. 00:02:41.23\00:02:44.53 So and his stories were wonderful. 00:02:44.54\00:02:47.64 He said that one year when he was, 00:02:47.65\00:02:51.36 I think at sophomore in college, 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.20 he decided that he wanted to go to Bogenhofen in Austria, 00:02:53.21\00:02:58.81 and take his college work over there 00:02:58.82\00:03:00.39 for one year, so he did that. 00:03:00.40\00:03:03.05 About Thanksgiving, he got a call from his parents 00:03:03.06\00:03:06.37 in Berrien Springs and they said, 00:03:06.38\00:03:09.06 we have planned a wonderful Christmas holiday break 00:03:09.07\00:03:13.25 for you, so you can come home 00:03:13.26\00:03:15.61 and spend Christmas with your family and extended family. 00:03:15.62\00:03:19.92 Now the thing that made this so appealing to Michael 00:03:19.93\00:03:23.18 was that, all, that whole fall, 00:03:23.19\00:03:26.47 they'd had nothing, but dreary, gloomy, 00:03:26.48\00:03:30.42 foggy, and rainy days. 00:03:30.43\00:03:32.96 He said, it was horrible. 00:03:32.97\00:03:35.34 And so, why wouldn't he jump up and down 00:03:35.35\00:03:38.87 because they told him, they were planning a family break 00:03:38.88\00:03:43.10 and vacation at Key Largo in Florida, 00:03:43.11\00:03:47.02 sandy beach, sunshine, and, you know, 00:03:47.03\00:03:50.30 it's just the opposite of what he had been experiencing. 00:03:50.31\00:03:53.73 So he said, well dad, let me think it over and he said, 00:03:53.74\00:03:59.04 I'm enjoying being here with my grandfather, 00:03:59.05\00:04:02.01 but that sounds great. 00:04:02.02\00:04:04.14 And his father said, well, we'll call you back 00:04:04.15\00:04:05.87 in two hours and we'll get the airline tickets. 00:04:05.88\00:04:11.22 So, for some reason he did not have peace, 00:04:11.23\00:04:14.95 he was troubled by this. 00:04:14.96\00:04:16.54 He went over to the girl's dorm and picked up his cousin. 00:04:16.55\00:04:19.92 He had the only car in the family on campus. 00:04:19.93\00:04:23.21 And so he had promised to take her 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.70 and her girlfriend shopping. 00:04:25.71\00:04:28.21 So he picked them up and he went into her room 00:04:28.22\00:04:30.68 and he said, you know, I just had a phone call 00:04:30.69\00:04:33.18 from my parents and they want me to come home for Christmas, 00:04:33.19\00:04:36.88 but I don't know if I should go or not. 00:04:36.89\00:04:39.99 And she said, Michael, have you prayed? 00:04:40.00\00:04:43.26 And he said, here she was a junior or senior 00:04:43.27\00:04:47.54 in high school and she was asking me, 00:04:47.55\00:04:50.50 a college theology major if I had prayed. 00:04:50.51\00:04:53.66 He said, I had to tell her, no, I hadn't. 00:04:53.67\00:04:56.89 So he said, she told me, all right, 00:04:56.90\00:04:58.63 let's kneel down here and pray about this. 00:04:58.64\00:05:00.97 So they did and she said, God just give him wisdom, 00:05:00.98\00:05:04.44 he doesn't know what to do. 00:05:04.45\00:05:06.73 Well, it seem to him like this was a no brainier, 00:05:06.74\00:05:09.90 I mean, where he had been 00:05:09.91\00:05:11.59 and where he had an opportunity to go 00:05:11.60\00:05:14.15 and he missed his family, so he really wanted to go home. 00:05:14.16\00:05:18.65 He took the girls down shopping 00:05:18.66\00:05:21.28 and he went to his favorite store 00:05:21.29\00:05:23.18 which was a huge sporting good store. 00:05:23.19\00:05:26.22 And he said, all the time that he was there, 00:05:26.23\00:05:28.97 he couldn't concentrate, 00:05:28.98\00:05:30.55 he was just walking up and down the aisles 00:05:30.56\00:05:32.77 and nothing interested him. 00:05:32.78\00:05:34.79 And so he said, well, you know, 00:05:34.80\00:05:37.54 he didn't do anything, he finally picked up the girls 00:05:37.55\00:05:39.94 and took them back to campus. 00:05:39.95\00:05:41.45 As he was walking into the dormitory, 00:05:41.46\00:05:44.97 the phone was ringing and it was his father. 00:05:44.98\00:05:48.08 So he ran to the phone and he said, dad, 00:05:48.09\00:05:51.54 I've been thinking about this ever since. 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.22 And his mother was on the phone this time too 00:05:54.23\00:05:56.35 and she said, Michael, we're so excited 00:05:56.36\00:05:58.75 about having you come home. 00:05:58.76\00:06:00.03 We have missed you, this is a long time for us 00:06:00.04\00:06:03.33 to be separated and you're long ways away. 00:06:03.34\00:06:06.74 So we, we're just so anxious for you to come home 00:06:06.75\00:06:09.49 for Christmas, and you know, how they would feel. 00:06:09.50\00:06:14.07 He said, I had prayed about this, 00:06:14.08\00:06:17.52 I've thought about it little bit, 00:06:17.53\00:06:19.14 but he said I heard myself say, 00:06:19.15\00:06:21.94 I don't think I'm gonna come home, 00:06:21.95\00:06:24.20 I think I'm gonna stay and spend Christmas break 00:06:24.21\00:06:27.67 with my grandfather in Austria. 00:06:27.68\00:06:30.08 Now his grandfather was a great man. 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.28 He had been a hero in the Second World War, 00:06:32.29\00:06:36.61 and had been treated very, very badly. 00:06:36.62\00:06:40.78 Hitler's regime, you know, nobody was a winner, 00:06:40.79\00:06:44.84 everybody was treated very badly, 00:06:44.85\00:06:47.25 but he, maybe you've seen the book written, 00:06:47.26\00:06:50.95 I think it's a Thousand Shall Fall. Yes. 00:06:50.96\00:06:53.30 It's written about him, great man. 00:06:53.31\00:06:57.36 And he said, I just think I'll spend Christmas, 00:06:57.37\00:06:59.66 you know, with my grandfather. 00:06:59.67\00:07:01.41 Well, his parents could not believe it. 00:07:01.42\00:07:04.08 They said, this is strange, I can't believe, 00:07:04.09\00:07:07.46 why you would want to do this? 00:07:07.47\00:07:09.95 We, you know, you've seen your grandfather, 00:07:09.96\00:07:11.94 you can go home to his place on weekends, 00:07:11.95\00:07:14.64 but we haven't gotten to see you, 00:07:14.65\00:07:16.09 we need to have you here for Christmas. 00:07:16.10\00:07:18.62 And he said, no I just think I'm gonna stay here 00:07:18.63\00:07:23.09 and when he said that he had peace. 00:07:23.10\00:07:26.18 His mother said, son we already have your ticket, 00:07:26.19\00:07:30.96 we have your reservation, everything is planned, 00:07:30.97\00:07:34.89 we really need to have you here. 00:07:34.90\00:07:37.47 And Michael's father Gerard also said, 00:07:37.48\00:07:41.68 Michael your mother is going to be heartbroken 00:07:41.69\00:07:44.11 if you don't come home. 00:07:44.12\00:07:45.74 You get to see your grandfather all the time. 00:07:45.75\00:07:48.58 And Michael said, no, 00:07:48.59\00:07:50.49 I just think I'm gonna stay here for Christmas. 00:07:50.50\00:07:54.44 So they hung up the phone, talked a little bit more 00:07:54.45\00:07:57.62 and then he walked away, but he had peace, 00:07:57.63\00:08:01.98 he didn't know why, but he had peace. 00:08:01.99\00:08:04.37 And then he went to his grandfather for Christmas. 00:08:04.38\00:08:07.80 During the Christmas break, he got another 00:08:07.81\00:08:10.99 long distance phone call from his parents. 00:08:11.00\00:08:14.30 This time, his father sounded visibly shaken. 00:08:14.31\00:08:19.72 He said, Michael, your mother and I had 00:08:19.73\00:08:23.85 your plane reservations on Pan American 102 00:08:23.86\00:08:30.10 that was the plan that went down in Lockerbie, Scotland. 00:08:30.11\00:08:33.13 Wow! And he said, as I heard that, 00:08:33.14\00:08:39.20 suddenly, you know, I was just breaking out in cold sweat, 00:08:39.21\00:08:44.65 thinking, I could be dead right now. 00:08:44.66\00:08:49.47 But God intervened and did something wonderful 00:08:49.48\00:08:53.43 in my life. So he said, 00:08:53.44\00:08:55.99 now everyday I go to the Lord and I say, 00:08:56.00\00:08:58.11 Lord, strengthen my faith and help me to see, 00:08:58.12\00:09:02.49 why you spared my life? Yeah. 00:09:02.50\00:09:05.24 So, you know, God is still working. Yes. 00:09:05.25\00:09:07.75 And George Muller in Prussia 00:09:07.76\00:09:11.69 it was then where he was born, 00:09:11.70\00:09:13.61 then came to Eastern Germany to study 00:09:13.62\00:09:18.15 and then came to England. 00:09:18.16\00:09:20.16 And tell us a little bit about what he did, 00:09:20.17\00:09:22.87 this is such exciting stuff. 00:09:22.88\00:09:25.70 Doesn't this just interest you and get you all excited? 00:09:25.71\00:09:29.21 Yes, he is the one of my heroes of faith. 00:09:29.22\00:09:31.93 Yeah, George Muller lives in a day and age 00:09:31.94\00:09:33.85 where no one prayed. 00:09:33.86\00:09:35.54 That's right. No one have faith in God. 00:09:35.55\00:09:36.60 That's right. They believed God 00:09:36.61\00:09:37.59 was out there, but that God did not interfere. 00:09:37.60\00:09:39.70 That's right. In the lives of men. 00:09:39.71\00:09:40.68 That's right. And it was God 00:09:40.69\00:09:43.79 who inspired him to pray. 00:09:43.80\00:09:47.15 For the orphans. Right. 00:09:47.16\00:09:48.75 But he said, there are thousands of orphans starving 00:09:48.76\00:09:52.40 on the streets or they would take them into the jails 00:09:52.41\00:09:56.24 or the mental asylums as they called them then horrible, 00:09:56.25\00:10:00.27 horrible places for these children to have to live, 00:10:00.28\00:10:03.05 but at least they had some food and a place to sleep. 00:10:03.06\00:10:07.10 But he said, as much as I want to help these orphans, 00:10:07.11\00:10:12.11 the reason that I'm doing this is to prove 00:10:12.12\00:10:14.96 that God answers prayers. Yes. 00:10:14.97\00:10:16.76 Not, that was his second, the orphans were secondary, 00:10:16.77\00:10:21.18 but the first reason while he prayed was-- 00:10:21.19\00:10:24.65 For God's glory. That's right. To-- 00:10:24.66\00:10:26.80 For people to see that God answers prayer. Yes. 00:10:26.81\00:10:30.24 So what, what, tell us a little bit about that. 00:10:30.25\00:10:33.08 What it got you excited about that? 00:10:33.09\00:10:37.17 It's exciting to know that that there is this God, 00:10:37.18\00:10:40.31 who truly owns the cattle on thousand hills. 00:10:40.32\00:10:42.20 That's right. All the silver and gold and, 00:10:42.21\00:10:44.81 who not only come through in a mighty way 00:10:44.82\00:10:47.21 for certain individuals, but, God gives His promises to us. 00:10:47.22\00:10:51.76 That's right. And when we stepped out 00:10:51.77\00:10:54.56 on faith and we're able to exercise our faith, 00:10:54.57\00:10:57.83 we're able to grow, and we're able to see 00:10:57.84\00:11:00.04 God come through for us. 00:11:00.05\00:11:01.88 And in the beginning of his journey, 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.95 he was only, he would ask God for little amounts, 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.42 of course later on in life that he was able to ask God. 00:11:06.43\00:11:09.19 More. For more. 00:11:09.20\00:11:10.17 And more and more. And that's how it is for us. 00:11:10.18\00:11:13.46 That's right. We grow little by little. 00:11:13.47\00:11:15.95 That's right. And amazing how in his lifetime 00:11:15.96\00:11:19.40 God gave him the equivalent of $180 million. 00:11:19.41\00:11:23.13 Million dollars, $180 million in our money today. Yes. 00:11:23.14\00:11:28.88 And he didn't keep it, he didn't hold it, 00:11:28.89\00:11:32.12 he used it for the buildings, of course, 00:11:32.13\00:11:34.88 he used it for food and to pay the staff. Yeah. 00:11:34.89\00:11:38.15 But he always sent money overseas. Yeah. 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.70 Hudson Taylor and many other people 00:11:40.71\00:11:42.78 and he established schools for the children 00:11:42.79\00:11:45.13 who weren't even there. 00:11:45.14\00:11:47.14 So, it was an exciting thing. 00:11:47.15\00:11:48.94 I love to hear what he did at the beginning of that work. 00:11:48.95\00:11:54.84 First, he and his wife decided they were going to give 00:11:54.85\00:11:57.73 their wedding gifts away and that they were 00:11:57.74\00:12:00.30 not going to keep a bank account for themselves, 00:12:00.31\00:12:02.83 they were going to live just by faith. Yes. 00:12:02.84\00:12:06.14 And they put a box in the back of the church 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.13 where he was the pastor, and he told the people, 00:12:08.14\00:12:12.22 if you feel led by the Lord to donate 00:12:12.23\00:12:16.50 to the pastoral salary then that's all he got. Yes. 00:12:16.51\00:12:20.30 And people told him he was crazy for doing that 00:12:20.31\00:12:24.17 because nobody had very much money, 00:12:24.18\00:12:26.75 but he got more something like four or five times more 00:12:26.76\00:12:30.88 than he would have, if he had relied on 00:12:30.89\00:12:34.37 tithes and offerings. Yes. 00:12:34.38\00:12:36.20 But when he felt that the Lord was leading him 00:12:36.21\00:12:39.19 to this orphan work, he found this house 00:12:39.20\00:12:43.15 on Wilson Street and he got staff and he prayed, 00:12:43.16\00:12:47.56 he prayed for the staff, he prayed for silverware, 00:12:47.57\00:12:52.17 for dishes, for bedding, for tower, everything, 00:12:52.18\00:12:57.07 he prayed for every, and he kept meticulous records. Yeah. 00:12:57.08\00:13:01.14 Amazing! But they went down there 00:13:01.15\00:13:05.19 to the house on Wilson Street and not one child came. 00:13:05.20\00:13:09.64 Do you remember that? Not one child came. 00:13:09.65\00:13:12.56 And he was so disappointed, but his wife Mary said to him, 00:13:12.57\00:13:16.69 and she was laughing, she said, George, 00:13:16.70\00:13:19.01 you prayed about everything else, 00:13:19.02\00:13:21.35 but you didn't ask the Lord to send you children. 00:13:21.36\00:13:25.19 So he said, oh, I didn't, 00:13:25.20\00:13:27.05 I just assumed that the Lord would know that 00:13:27.06\00:13:30.02 I was doing this for the children 00:13:30.03\00:13:31.42 and He would send the children. 00:13:31.43\00:13:32.98 But he learned from that, 00:13:32.99\00:13:34.83 you have to pray about everything. 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.33 So when he prayed for the children 00:13:37.34\00:13:39.39 then they came in huge numbers. Yes. 00:13:39.40\00:13:42.62 What's one of your favorite stories of George Muller? 00:13:42.63\00:13:45.51 One of my favorite stories is later on in life. 00:13:45.52\00:13:48.24 He spent a lot of time traveling around the world, 00:13:48.25\00:13:50.78 and he was on a ship and he is supposed to make it 00:13:50.79\00:13:53.38 to a city for speaking an appointment 00:13:53.39\00:13:55.64 and there was a fog. Yes. 00:13:55.65\00:13:57.51 And he spoke to the captain and the captain says, 00:13:57.52\00:13:59.68 we're not gonna make it there. 00:13:59.69\00:14:01.00 And he says, well I've never missed an appointment 00:14:01.01\00:14:03.58 and he took the captain down and he prayed. 00:14:03.59\00:14:07.30 And he said a simple prayer asking God to remove the fog 00:14:07.31\00:14:10.57 and then the captain was about to pray, 00:14:10.58\00:14:12.99 and he put his hand on a captain saying-- 00:14:13.00\00:14:15.95 First of all, God's already heard the prayer 00:14:15.96\00:14:17.73 and answered, and second of all, 00:14:17.74\00:14:19.42 you don't believe what you're praying for? 00:14:19.43\00:14:21.08 You don't believe save your breath. 00:14:21.09\00:14:22.86 Yes, and they went up, the fog was gone 00:14:22.87\00:14:25.36 and that experience really impacted that captain's life. 00:14:25.37\00:14:28.87 That's wonderful. Yes, it's just amazing. 00:14:28.88\00:14:30.50 And they did arrive on time 00:14:30.51\00:14:32.12 and he was able to speak on time. 00:14:32.13\00:14:34.30 You know, I want to be sure 00:14:34.31\00:14:35.67 that our viewers know you, Liana and Martin Kim 00:14:35.68\00:14:39.78 from Berrien Springs, Michigan 00:14:39.79\00:14:41.87 and you're involved in the South Eastern, south, south-- 00:14:41.88\00:14:47.28 East Asia. Southeast Asia. 00:14:47.29\00:14:49.30 Project. Project. Yeah. 00:14:49.31\00:14:50.86 That's not a tongue twister, 00:14:50.87\00:14:52.20 I don't know Southeast Asia Project. 00:14:52.21\00:14:54.51 The Adventist Southeast Asia Projects, 00:14:54.52\00:14:56.45 it's ASAP for short. 00:14:56.46\00:14:57.81 Okay, and you are working with five countries 00:14:57.82\00:15:00.93 and working with people who have all kinds of needs. Yes. 00:15:00.94\00:15:05.40 And you're seeing God intervened and answer prayers. 00:15:05.41\00:15:09.66 Yes, we have to look to the Lord, 00:15:09.67\00:15:11.73 and so George Muller stories really encourage us. Oh, yeah. 00:15:11.74\00:15:14.65 Really inspire us to look to God in the same way 00:15:14.66\00:15:17.51 to wait on the Lord knowing that if God came through 00:15:17.52\00:15:20.20 for George Muller, He will come through for us. 00:15:20.21\00:15:22.65 George Muller's favorite promise 00:15:22.66\00:15:23.75 was Psalms 81 verse 10, 00:15:23.76\00:15:25.56 "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." 00:15:25.57\00:15:28.20 And that is a promise, I take it to the Lord 00:15:28.21\00:15:29.80 everyday saying, God this is not a promise 00:15:29.81\00:15:33.31 just for George Muller, 00:15:33.32\00:15:34.35 you're not a respective of persons. 00:15:34.36\00:15:35.93 That promise is for all of us, 00:15:35.94\00:15:37.70 and especially in these times with the economic downturn. 00:15:37.71\00:15:41.31 Yes, I remind the Lord of that promise too 00:15:41.32\00:15:44.62 because I say Lord in our work in prayer ministries, 00:15:44.63\00:15:48.79 we pray for money everyday and the Lord provides, 00:15:48.80\00:15:52.06 but I have to remind, I have to take that to the Lord. 00:15:52.07\00:15:55.26 Yeah. We can't just assume that God is on a roll 00:15:55.27\00:15:57.82 and that He is gonna keep providing if we don't ask, 00:15:57.83\00:16:00.44 because the rules of the kingdom are asked. 00:16:00.45\00:16:03.27 Yes. And you shall receive. 00:16:03.28\00:16:04.70 Yes. Seek and you will find knock and the door 00:16:04.71\00:16:07.04 will be opened, so we do have a work to do. Yes. 00:16:07.05\00:16:10.67 But I love the promises, there were two verses 00:16:10.68\00:16:14.72 that he especially liked. 00:16:14.73\00:16:16.34 One was "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." 00:16:16.35\00:16:19.72 The other one was 00:16:19.73\00:16:21.09 "I will give you honey from the rock." 00:16:21.10\00:16:23.50 Honey from the rock. 00:16:23.51\00:16:25.97 Beautiful. And God is faithful. Yes. 00:16:25.98\00:16:28.64 And you know when George Muller, 00:16:28.65\00:16:31.13 first was introduced to scripture, 00:16:31.14\00:16:33.89 he was actually a theology student, 00:16:33.90\00:16:38.02 and he was taking that because his father said 00:16:38.03\00:16:41.20 that's a good career for stability, 00:16:41.21\00:16:44.39 you can make some money and you can take care of me, 00:16:44.40\00:16:47.96 the father in my old age, 00:16:47.97\00:16:50.45 but they had no connection with God. 00:16:50.46\00:16:52.90 It was just like a secular career. 00:16:52.91\00:16:57.12 So he went to this college, 00:16:57.13\00:16:59.58 university but his life was anything but Christian. Right. 00:16:59.59\00:17:04.08 He, you know, would run up huge hotel bills, 00:17:04.09\00:17:07.50 drinking and partying and then, you know, 00:17:07.51\00:17:11.49 runoff without paying the bill. 00:17:11.50\00:17:14.70 And his father kept bailing him out of jail, 00:17:14.71\00:17:17.85 you know, kept paying the fees 00:17:17.86\00:17:20.50 and taking him out of jail but we would beat him. 00:17:20.51\00:17:23.48 Nothing worked for George Muller, 00:17:23.49\00:17:26.09 until he met the God of the scripture. Yes. 00:17:26.10\00:17:30.85 The God of heaven. 00:17:30.86\00:17:32.21 And that's very encouraging to me. Yes. 00:17:32.22\00:17:34.12 That God can take someone with such a wretched past. Yes. 00:17:34.13\00:17:37.96 And bless and fill him with the Holy Spirit 00:17:37.97\00:17:41.64 and George Muller was a man I believe that really knew 00:17:41.65\00:17:43.90 what it meant to walk with God. 00:17:43.91\00:17:45.31 Amen. Liana do you have 00:17:45.32\00:17:47.23 a special verse or a special story 00:17:47.24\00:17:50.71 of George Muller that just touches your heart? 00:17:50.72\00:17:53.23 Oh yeah. I like the story 00:17:53.24\00:17:55.03 that one time George Muller doesn't have anything 00:17:55.04\00:17:58.02 to feed the children, he doesn't have any bread, 00:17:58.03\00:18:01.35 any milk and he was praying for the milk specifically 00:18:01.36\00:18:05.20 and also the bread and then he was praying 00:18:05.21\00:18:07.79 and nothing, there was nothing. 00:18:07.80\00:18:09.59 And then he went outside, he was praying 00:18:09.60\00:18:12.48 and praying and the one, one man came by 00:18:12.49\00:18:16.34 and he said George Muller, you know what, 00:18:16.35\00:18:18.86 I have a lot of milk and then George Muller said, 00:18:18.87\00:18:22.25 thank the Lord, thank you. 00:18:22.26\00:18:24.09 And George Muller said, what happened to you? 00:18:24.10\00:18:26.81 And this guy said, you know, 00:18:26.82\00:18:28.03 I was a driving with a lot of milk 00:18:28.04\00:18:31.01 and my car just broke out in front of your orphanage. 00:18:31.02\00:18:35.22 And I don't know what to do with this whole milk. 00:18:35.23\00:18:38.27 And then George Muller said, thank you Lord 00:18:38.28\00:18:40.75 and whenever I read that story, 00:18:40.76\00:18:43.53 I thought Lord there is nothing 00:18:43.54\00:18:46.54 that you cannot do for me and for us. 00:18:46.55\00:18:48.81 Amen. And, you know, the children, 00:18:48.82\00:18:51.37 there were thousands of children and they never knew 00:18:51.38\00:18:55.65 when there was no food. 00:18:55.66\00:18:57.32 But sometimes, you know, 00:18:57.33\00:18:58.52 there was nothing in the cupboard, 00:18:58.53\00:19:00.17 there was no food at all and yet the children never knew. 00:19:00.18\00:19:05.38 And there was a little girl 00:19:05.39\00:19:06.48 that lived next door to the Muller's. 00:19:06.49\00:19:09.84 And he would go by her house on these mornings, 00:19:09.85\00:19:13.04 when there was nothing in a kitchen. 00:19:13.05\00:19:14.66 And he would say to her, come with me, 00:19:14.67\00:19:16.96 we're going to see how God will answer our prayer. 00:19:16.97\00:19:20.32 Full of faith, nothing could get him down 00:19:20.33\00:19:23.79 because he'd learned that God 00:19:23.80\00:19:25.59 came through over and over and over. Amen. 00:19:25.60\00:19:28.43 And I believe the Lord wants us to have 00:19:28.44\00:19:29.94 that kind of faith today. Yes. 00:19:29.95\00:19:32.13 Because he went out of his way, 00:19:32.14\00:19:35.08 the Lord went out of his way to answer those prayers 00:19:35.09\00:19:37.69 for George Muller, so all of us would be blessed. 00:19:37.70\00:19:40.85 I have a friend in Franklin, Tennessee who as a hobby, 00:19:40.86\00:19:47.00 he has collected everything he could find, 00:19:47.01\00:19:49.54 every single book that's ever been written 00:19:49.55\00:19:52.39 on the life of George Muller. Wow! 00:19:52.40\00:19:53.96 He has a vast library and he goes and speaks 00:19:53.97\00:19:58.57 on the life of George Muller. 00:19:58.58\00:20:00.30 And he said that has been such a blessing in his life. 00:20:00.31\00:20:04.17 I believe the Lord wants us 00:20:04.18\00:20:06.10 to keep remembering these things. Amen. 00:20:06.11\00:20:08.98 Because he just met him over and over and over. 00:20:08.99\00:20:13.49 I went to visit one of those buildings, 00:20:13.50\00:20:16.64 in fact I've been there couple of times. 00:20:16.65\00:20:18.91 And you cannot stand there and see these 00:20:18.92\00:20:21.46 five huge stone buildings without having awe 00:20:21.47\00:20:27.60 in your heart, you are just filled with wonder. 00:20:27.61\00:20:31.95 And during the Second World War 00:20:31.96\00:20:33.88 for an all over England, there were 00:20:33.89\00:20:35.73 underground air raid shelters. 00:20:35.74\00:20:38.64 They the people chose rather than to go underground 00:20:38.65\00:20:43.01 for safety during a bomb raid. 00:20:43.02\00:20:46.48 Yeah. They would rush to those buildings. Yeah. 00:20:46.49\00:20:48.80 And they said God is here, 00:20:48.81\00:20:50.58 we're safer here than anywhere. 00:20:50.59\00:20:54.05 So but when you see those buildings 00:20:54.06\00:20:56.99 and then I walked inside and I saw 00:20:57.00\00:21:00.11 the classic features, beautiful stair, 00:21:00.12\00:21:04.04 winding staircases and the finest wood, 00:21:04.05\00:21:07.60 everything he did for the Lord was first class. 00:21:07.61\00:21:11.62 He said give God your best. Amen. 00:21:11.63\00:21:14.79 And it is just a beautiful story, powerful story. 00:21:14.80\00:21:19.66 And the Lord gave him $180 million. Yes, amazing. 00:21:19.67\00:21:25.58 They called him Robber of the Cruel Streets, 00:21:25.59\00:21:29.82 Robber of the Cruel Streets, 00:21:29.83\00:21:31.71 because the streets were cruel. Yeah. 00:21:31.72\00:21:33.94 These children had lost their parents 00:21:33.95\00:21:36.61 because of the plague and wars and they were just, 00:21:36.62\00:21:41.99 you know, literally out in the cold. 00:21:42.00\00:21:45.46 What stands out in your mind Martin, 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.03 as a crowning experience that you have 00:21:47.04\00:21:51.62 remembered about George Muller? 00:21:51.63\00:21:54.30 I once heard that a news reporter once said Mr. Muller, 00:21:54.31\00:21:58.89 how does it live to live, how does it feel 00:21:58.90\00:22:01.09 to live hand to mouth. 00:22:01.10\00:22:03.28 And he thought about it and he smiled and he said, 00:22:03.29\00:22:07.28 it's wonderful, God's hand, my mouth. 00:22:07.29\00:22:11.15 And I just liked that, it's so beautiful. 00:22:11.16\00:22:13.12 Isn't that good? God is faithful. 00:22:13.13\00:22:15.56 And, you know, the way that he was introduced 00:22:15.57\00:22:18.23 to this, he went to this Bible study 00:22:18.24\00:22:22.02 in somebody's home with his friend 00:22:22.03\00:22:25.07 who was kind of a so, so Christian. 00:22:25.08\00:22:29.16 The friend was hoping to learn the things 00:22:29.17\00:22:30.96 of the world from George, and George wanted to know 00:22:30.97\00:22:35.39 what made this guy tick, because he was kind of a 00:22:35.40\00:22:38.81 Christian but sort of riding the fence. 00:22:38.82\00:22:41.43 So they went to this home, remember? 00:22:41.44\00:22:44.56 And here were some people, simple people who were 00:22:44.57\00:22:49.68 just sitting around in a circle, 00:22:49.69\00:22:51.91 opening God's word and believing what they read 00:22:51.92\00:22:55.71 and then they would get down 00:22:55.72\00:22:57.14 in front of their chairs and pray. 00:22:57.15\00:22:59.91 And he said all of my life, I've never heard anybody pray 00:22:59.92\00:23:05.34 to someone that they thought was listening. Yeah. 00:23:05.35\00:23:07.85 I only thought, I only heard prayer books and recitations 00:23:07.86\00:23:13.00 and, you know, just ritual, 00:23:13.01\00:23:17.26 but not something that came from the heart of somebody 00:23:17.27\00:23:20.75 on earth to the heart of someone in heaven, 00:23:20.76\00:23:24.05 and it changed his life, totally changed his life. 00:23:24.06\00:23:28.43 He said somebody ask him, 00:23:28.44\00:23:30.79 how do you maintain your faith? 00:23:30.80\00:23:35.03 And he said every morning I get up and I go to God's word, 00:23:35.04\00:23:40.34 and I begin and I read the Bible through. 00:23:40.35\00:23:45.38 And however long it takes you to read, you know, 00:23:45.39\00:23:48.96 for or and prayed and he didn't just read scripture, 00:23:48.97\00:23:53.55 but he said I read scripture until the Lord stopped me. 00:23:53.56\00:23:57.96 And he said then when the Lord stopped me, 00:23:57.97\00:24:00.38 I would stop and think about that 00:24:00.39\00:24:02.54 and pray about that verse. 00:24:02.55\00:24:05.39 And we're told the same thing, 00:24:05.40\00:24:07.82 read until you find a scripture 00:24:07.83\00:24:09.81 and then make it your own, 00:24:09.82\00:24:11.82 and then it's alive and powerful in your life. 00:24:11.83\00:24:16.16 And he said, if you get bogged down 00:24:16.17\00:24:19.60 in the Old Testament like Leviticus, 00:24:19.61\00:24:22.44 and some of those books that are--Numbers. 00:24:22.45\00:24:24.92 A little Numbers, yeah little more difficult 00:24:24.93\00:24:27.52 to get through. 00:24:27.53\00:24:28.65 He said read for a while in the Old Testament, 00:24:28.66\00:24:31.22 then read for a while in the New Testament. 00:24:31.23\00:24:33.69 But mark your place, so that you know 00:24:33.70\00:24:36.35 when you're finished and then come back the next day 00:24:36.36\00:24:39.09 and begin at that spot, 00:24:39.10\00:24:41.09 and until you read the Bible through. 00:24:41.10\00:24:43.27 And then when you finished, begin and read it 00:24:43.28\00:24:45.74 through again and when you're finished, 00:24:45.75\00:24:48.24 read it through again. 00:24:48.25\00:24:49.89 And you know God does meet you. 00:24:49.90\00:24:53.05 Yes. In the words. 00:24:53.06\00:24:54.19 Yeah. Of scripture. Yeah. 00:24:54.20\00:24:56.56 He is available here and He is faithful. 00:24:56.57\00:25:00.86 Yeah, I've been encouraged by what George Muller 00:25:00.87\00:25:03.24 has written to be on a Bible reading plan, 00:25:03.25\00:25:06.29 and I know there are some days where God just gives me, 00:25:06.30\00:25:08.55 just exactly what I need to hear. Yes. 00:25:08.56\00:25:10.39 And only He can work it out for me to be, 00:25:10.40\00:25:12.96 you know, reading a certain passage on a certain day. 00:25:12.97\00:25:15.61 And it's just exciting to know that 00:25:15.62\00:25:16.67 the God of Universe, you know, is guiding you. 00:25:16.68\00:25:18.90 I believe that because nobody knows 00:25:18.91\00:25:21.94 what's in your heart. 00:25:21.95\00:25:23.34 Haven't you found that Liana? Yes. 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.53 When you go and open God's word, 00:25:25.54\00:25:27.48 here is something that answers a question 00:25:27.49\00:25:30.51 in your mind or in your heart and nobody else. Yes. 00:25:30.52\00:25:34.29 Knew it anything about it. 00:25:34.30\00:25:36.80 God is so good, He is so faithful. 00:25:36.81\00:25:40.18 I'll tell you a quick story about something 00:25:40.19\00:25:42.05 that happened to us in Oregon. 00:25:42.06\00:25:44.72 I was praying for money for clothing 00:25:44.73\00:25:48.15 for pastors and their wives, 00:25:48.16\00:25:49.83 because pastors and their wives sometimes 00:25:49.84\00:25:52.56 are on a strict budget they have mortgage 00:25:52.57\00:25:55.25 and car payments and tuition 00:25:55.26\00:25:57.25 if they have children and sometimes 00:25:57.26\00:25:59.54 their own clothing waits till the end, 00:25:59.55\00:26:02.21 you know, of the budget. 00:26:02.22\00:26:03.48 So I was praying, but I didn't say 00:26:03.49\00:26:05.06 anything about it to my husband, 00:26:05.07\00:26:06.70 because he was the president 00:26:06.71\00:26:08.22 and he likes to solve problems. 00:26:08.23\00:26:09.97 And I thought, I don't want him to solve, 00:26:09.98\00:26:12.17 I want God to solve this problem. 00:26:12.18\00:26:14.77 And so I was quite, but I was praying everyday. 00:26:14.78\00:26:18.25 Lord I want money for pastors for clothing, 00:26:18.26\00:26:20.94 for pastors and their wives. 00:26:20.95\00:26:22.97 Well, we were at a retreat and a physician came up to me 00:26:22.98\00:26:27.01 and he said, I have $10,000 00:26:27.02\00:26:30.37 and I want to give it to you 00:26:30.38\00:26:32.03 for clothing for pastors and their wives. Wow! 00:26:32.04\00:26:34.36 Nobody that ever said anything like that to me before. 00:26:34.37\00:26:38.41 And that wasn't enough, but as he walked away, 00:26:38.42\00:26:41.37 it gave me faith to ask more, 00:26:41.38\00:26:43.60 so when the check came in, it was for $15,000. Wow! 00:26:43.61\00:26:47.31 And I had to repeat the prayers 00:26:47.32\00:26:50.42 but that happened every year at Christmas, isn't God good? 00:26:50.43\00:26:53.90 Amen. I just believe 00:26:53.91\00:26:55.73 that the Lord wants us to take scripture 00:26:55.74\00:26:59.87 and to take the stories of great men and women of faith. 00:26:59.88\00:27:04.08 And go to Him and say Lord, I believe and I want you 00:27:04.09\00:27:08.31 to make me a woman of faith. 00:27:08.32\00:27:10.41 I want you to make me a George Muller. Yes. 00:27:10.42\00:27:14.18 And just give me the kind of faith that will honor You 00:27:14.19\00:27:18.24 and help me to know You better 00:27:18.25\00:27:20.22 and there is no more exciting way to live. Yes. 00:27:20.23\00:27:23.55 It's like His hand and my mouth. 00:27:23.56\00:27:25.92 Yes. Amen. 00:27:25.93\00:27:26.90 Someone has said that faith is an acronym 00:27:26.91\00:27:28.96 for a fantastic adventurous in trusting Him. 00:27:28.97\00:27:32.10 And that's what it's all about, 00:27:32.11\00:27:33.08 it's an adventure when you trust God. 00:27:33.09\00:27:34.27 That's right, that's right 00:27:34.28\00:27:35.78 and He gives you the peace and joy and hope. 00:27:35.79\00:27:38.46 And He tells you, nothing is impossible, 00:27:38.47\00:27:41.65 nothing is impossible with God. 00:27:41.66\00:27:44.03 He is great and wonderful and He has all power. Amen. 00:27:44.04\00:27:48.55 So what a privilege. 00:27:48.56\00:27:50.21 We're--we're just about out of time. 00:27:50.22\00:27:51.88 But I wanted to say, it's good to be with you. 00:27:51.89\00:27:54.63 Thank you for inviting us into your home. 00:27:54.64\00:27:56.91 And we just hope that you have been encouraged 00:27:56.92\00:27:59.17 and inspired to have faith in God. 00:27:59.18\00:28:02.13 No matter how things look, 00:28:02.14\00:28:03.67 believe and have faith and trust. 00:28:03.68\00:28:06.55 God loves you. God bless you. 00:28:06.56\00:28:09.04 We'll see you next time. 00:28:09.05\00:28:10.02
