Well join us today for 00:00:09.09\00:00:12.37 Issues & Answer, because today. We're gonna be 00:00:12.40\00:00:15.20 talking about, how to get 00:00:15.23\00:00:17.30 that proper motivation going. 00:00:17.33\00:00:19.49 Hi, I'm Shelly Quinn and we're so glad that you're 00:00:45.28\00:00:47.60 joining us today for Issues & Answers. 00:00:47.63\00:00:49.44 We're gonna be talking about getting motivated 00:00:49.92\00:00:52.62 and I'm like to share one of my favorite scriptures 00:00:52.65\00:00:55.06 with you, because somehow I think this surprise 00:00:55.09\00:00:57.53 in Ephesians 2:10 Paul write and says, 00:00:57.56\00:01:01.45 for we that you and me are His workmanship, 00:01:01.48\00:01:06.14 God's handy work. His work of art, created in 00:01:06.17\00:01:11.07 Christ Jesus for Good works, which God prepared 00:01:11.10\00:01:15.82 before hand that we should walk in them, 00:01:15.85\00:01:18.48 and you know, we all know that they are certain 00:01:19.20\00:01:22.22 good works and good things, that we're be 00:01:22.25\00:01:24.31 doing and sometimes we sit around and say. 00:01:24.34\00:01:26.84 I just don't feel motivated, but today 00:01:27.55\00:01:30.74 we've a very special guest. She's going to 00:01:30.77\00:01:33.26 tell us, how to over come this and her name is 00:01:33.29\00:01:36.11 Jennifer Jill Schwirzer. Jennifer, we're so glad 00:01:36.14\00:01:39.44 that you're here and I know that you've a 00:01:39.98\00:01:43.16 Masters in Human Services and you're a certified 00:01:43.19\00:01:46.48 Christian counselor. Aren't you? 00:01:46.51\00:01:48.82 Umm! Umm! And we're so glad that 00:01:48.85\00:01:50.27 you've come today to talk us about that. 00:01:50.30\00:01:51.98 Great to be here, I'm really excited. 00:01:52.01\00:01:53.02 I wanna ask you a little bit about your ministry, tell us. 00:01:53.05\00:01:56.70 Tell us about yourself. Okay, well I started 00:01:56.74\00:01:59.29 out doing a lot of, I mean musician, 00:01:59.41\00:02:01.54 I did lot's of singing then I got into 00:02:01.57\00:02:03.33 writing and presenting seminars do that for many 00:02:03.36\00:02:05.81 years and then finally, that's a second half in 00:02:05.84\00:02:07.91 my life career decided to get into counseling. 00:02:07.94\00:02:10.65 So, I went back to graduate school got them 00:02:10.68\00:02:12.92 answers and counseling and I've a counseling 00:02:12.95\00:02:14.87 practice on top of all that other stuff. 00:02:14.90\00:02:16.74 That's wonderful do, why did you choose 00:02:16.77\00:02:19.05 getting motivated. 00:02:19.08\00:02:20.11 Well, I've see that it's a common clinical 00:02:20.98\00:02:23.77 presentation a lot of people come to counseling 00:02:23.80\00:02:26.12 and need to get motivated. They just 00:02:26.15\00:02:27.97 can't seem to get themselves, you know, 00:02:28.00\00:02:30.45 off their chair and into action so. 00:02:31.13\00:02:33.40 It's a common presentation. 00:02:33.43\00:02:34.90 Do you have a definition for motivation? 00:02:35.38\00:02:37.47 Well, we're gonna get into that. 00:02:37.64\00:02:38.61 Okay. But, I wanted to say 00:02:38.64\00:02:40.49 that. You know, I see a lot of people coming in 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.70 and usually it has to with things like, 00:02:42.73\00:02:44.86 needing to change their diet. They no, they need 00:02:45.40\00:02:47.20 to eat healthier or they no need to exercise. 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.86 Often time's people have a difficult time getting 00:02:50.40\00:02:51.97 motivated to clean their house. Sometimes it's 00:02:52.00\00:02:55.04 religious devotions; people want to be close 00:02:55.07\00:02:57.19 being God. They wanna have a spiritual 00:02:57.22\00:02:58.80 experience, but they can't seem to get 00:02:58.83\00:03:00.93 themselves to self discipline enough to get 00:03:00.96\00:03:03.35 up early in the morning and spend that hour with 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.66 God and so these kinds of things are very 00:03:05.69\00:03:08.25 common motivation issues and so, we really had 00:03:08.28\00:03:11.17 to kind of sort through. You know, what's going 00:03:11.20\00:03:13.82 on their in minds and try to find something that 00:03:13.85\00:03:16.06 works for them so. I thought that, 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.36 we could talk about it. 00:03:18.39\00:03:19.36 I think it's wonderful. Yeah. 00:03:19.37\00:03:20.67 Because I know, I can identify with that. 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.90 There are times that, you go through a time in 00:03:22.93\00:03:26.07 your life where you're exercising regularly. 00:03:26.10\00:03:28.37 You feel really wonderful what you are. 00:03:28.40\00:03:31.04 Umm! And then something 00:03:31.07\00:03:32.56 breaks the rhythm that you've going. 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.85 Yeah. And it's so hard to 00:03:35.88\00:03:37.48 get going again, even .though you start feeling 00:03:37.51\00:03:39.70 poorly. That's right. 00:03:39.73\00:03:40.70 And you think well, I know if just getup and 00:03:40.71\00:03:43.23 exercise. Umm! Umm! 00:03:43.26\00:03:44.23 I feel better, but it is interesting how we can 00:03:44.24\00:03:47.18 sometimes not have the discipline. 00:03:47.21\00:03:49.81 We need to getup and get going. 00:03:49.84\00:03:51.09 You've it one period and then you fall away and 00:03:51.12\00:03:53.52 then you need to get backup and going. 00:03:53.55\00:03:55.02 But you just can't seem to get there. 00:03:55.05\00:03:56.65 Amen. But the reality is it 00:03:56.68\00:03:58.27 everybody is motivated, whether people think 00:03:58.30\00:04:01.16 they're motivated or not everybody is motivated to 00:04:01.19\00:04:04.15 do something and what we say in psychology is 00:04:04.18\00:04:06.56 all behaviors operative. There is something we are 00:04:06.59\00:04:09.51 trying to achieve in all behavior, either avoiding 00:04:09.54\00:04:13.49 something that we don't like or getting something. 00:04:13.52\00:04:16.04 We do like all behavior is really pretty much 00:04:16.07\00:04:18.96 motivational so. People that say, they're not 00:04:19.00\00:04:21.86 motivated really are motivated, but they're 00:04:21.89\00:04:24.13 motivated to do things like eat lot of junk food 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.58 or sit in front of the TV and watch TV or 00:04:26.61\00:04:30.09 you know avoid something unpleasant or difficult. 00:04:30.12\00:04:33.93 I don't like working out a conflict in 00:04:33.96\00:04:35.79 relationship, they're really motivate to avoid that you know. 00:04:35.82\00:04:38.91 So, you know, I used the terminology, 00:04:38.94\00:04:42.08 that motivation means it's a motive for 00:04:42.11\00:04:45.05 actions. That's right. 00:04:45.08\00:04:46.13 And basically, at this point, if I don't wanted 00:04:46.30\00:04:50.46 to get out and exercise or say I'm not 00:04:50.49\00:04:52.09 motivated to exercise, that's true, my motive 00:04:52.12\00:04:54.60 for the action of staying in my chair, 00:04:54.63\00:04:57.39 if you will, that's right, is because I am willing 00:04:57.42\00:05:00.06 avoid the strain of the work, that's right, 00:05:00.09\00:05:02.73 maybe just sweating, that's right, and sore 00:05:02.76\00:05:04.91 muscles. That's right, so you're 00:05:04.94\00:05:05.91 motivated to do something. 00:05:05.92\00:05:07.43 You're motivated to avoid exercising. 00:05:07.46\00:05:09.70 Okay. So, motivation is 00:05:09.73\00:05:11.40 always a work. The way we say it in 00:05:11.43\00:05:12.97 Psychobabble is all behaviors operative. 00:05:13.00\00:05:16.62 There is something we're trying to get out of that 00:05:16.65\00:05:19.04 behavior, either avoiding something or achieving 00:05:19.07\00:05:21.97 something or getting something. 00:05:22.00\00:05:23.37 Okay. All behaviors operative! 00:05:23.40\00:05:25.09 Well, let's talk about some of the psychobabble 00:05:25.67\00:05:27.92 theories is if you will. Okay, I hope, 00:05:27.95\00:05:31.18 I can use that term loosely, some people that 00:05:31.21\00:05:33.28 I speak English and I'm fluent in psychobabble so. 00:05:33.31\00:05:36.12 Okay. 00:05:36.15\00:05:37.14 One of the most popular and well known theories, 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.56 they talked about motivation was Abraham 00:05:40.59\00:05:42.12 Maslow, and so let me just give a little 00:05:42.15\00:05:44.23 background on him and then we'll discuss his 00:05:44.26\00:05:46.15 theory. He said, the basic premise that 00:05:46.18\00:05:48.56 he worked from was that all behavior was 00:05:48.59\00:05:51.99 need based, people were motivated to be fill 00:05:52.02\00:05:55.40 certain needs and the add what he called the 00:05:55.43\00:05:57.71 hierarchy of needs, started with 00:05:57.74\00:05:59.66 physiological needs like food and then he went to 00:05:59.69\00:06:02.97 safety. We need to be sheltered from the 00:06:03.00\00:06:04.96 elements and then it was belonging. He said need 00:06:04.99\00:06:07.80 to be part of a society or group or family and then, 00:06:07.83\00:06:11.94 then it was a steam and need to fill valuable and 00:06:11.97\00:06:14.77 the finally self actualization, which was 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.05 sort of realizing your own potential. 00:06:17.08\00:06:19.51 Okay, so that was the hierarchy of needs and 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.48 what he said was that, if we don't have the 00:06:21.51\00:06:23.56 basic needs to fill. We won't be able move on to 00:06:23.59\00:06:26.39 the next tear of the hierarchy sort of speaks, 00:06:26.42\00:06:29.36 so the thinking was that you've to meet those 00:06:29.39\00:06:32.41 basic needs and then the person will naturally 00:06:32.44\00:06:34.83 progressed to the next need in the hierarchy. 00:06:34.86\00:06:37.78 I would prompt with that, because what I see in 00:06:38.71\00:06:40.86 my clients and people and my self, is that once 00:06:41.53\00:06:45.00 get those basic needs met. Once we're fat and 00:06:45.03\00:06:48.22 safe and warm, we tend not to get the things 00:06:48.25\00:06:52.09 that we needs, such as belongingness. 00:06:52.12\00:06:54.05 Many people are too lazy or avoidant, 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.94 to work on developing healthy relationships. 00:06:58.07\00:07:00.44 Self actualization, you know people 00:07:01.73\00:07:03.20 fulfilling their potential. You know, 00:07:03.23\00:07:04.45 how many they're, that never to fulfill 00:07:04.48\00:07:06.73 their potential simply because they're rather 00:07:06.76\00:07:09.07 sit in front of the TV and avoid having to 00:07:09.10\00:07:11.68 actually discipline themselves to you know 00:07:11.71\00:07:14.65 go get a master's degree or do whatever they need 00:07:14.68\00:07:17.12 do to feel their potential. So, many 00:07:17.15\00:07:20.03 people really need things, but don't get 00:07:20.06\00:07:23.04 those things. Because they're not really 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.80 motivated by what they need, so much as by what 00:07:25.83\00:07:28.50 they want. You know, 00:07:28.53\00:07:29.79 for some reason, I trying to remember what it is, 00:07:29.82\00:07:32.29 I know it's in Isaiah, there was a scripture in 00:07:32.32\00:07:35.01 Isaiah that just talks about, how the Lord is, 00:07:35.04\00:07:39.90 like the eagle stirs the nest, 00:07:39.93\00:07:42.18 The nest, and stirs up her young. 00:07:42.21\00:07:44.14 And basically, what the eagle does is go and 00:07:45.20\00:07:48.26 there is a huge nest that they build and 00:07:48.29\00:07:50.37 they're so wonderfully comfortable, but they 00:07:50.40\00:07:52.80 start taking out all of the feathers, and the 00:07:52.83\00:07:54.84 cushion things, that's right, just leave 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.20 the sticks, to motivate, to motivate the babies to 00:07:56.23\00:08:00.26 get out of the nest, to get out of the nest 00:08:00.29\00:08:02.16 and fly, that's right, but what you're saying 00:08:02.19\00:08:04.10 is that sometimes when people's basic needs if 00:08:04.13\00:08:06.86 they are, if they got sheltered, yeah they are 00:08:06.89\00:08:09.76 comfortable, they're in comfortable 00:08:09.79\00:08:10.97 place and their bellies are full. 00:08:11.00\00:08:12.56 That's right. But sometimes people 00:08:12.59\00:08:14.17 just sit back they need the Lord to stir the 00:08:14.20\00:08:17.20 nest, to give them some discomfort in their life, 00:08:17.23\00:08:19.30 to get them of dead sinner, if you will. 00:08:19.33\00:08:22.12 That's right, that's right and often that discomfort 00:08:22.15\00:08:23.88 comes in the form of problems that develop. 00:08:23.91\00:08:25.95 Because they're spending all their time sitting in 00:08:25.98\00:08:28.26 front of the TV instead of attending to what 00:08:28.29\00:08:29.97 they're really do need. So those needs will kind 00:08:30.00\00:08:32.28 of cry out to them, if they're not met over 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.46 a long period of time. But you know, 00:08:34.49\00:08:36.08 it's amazing how avoidant people can be even in 00:08:36.11\00:08:38.95 the face of you know, things are going majorly 00:08:38.98\00:08:41.86 wrong in their life. They can still manage 00:08:41.89\00:08:43.97 to avoid doing anything about it. 00:08:44.00\00:08:45.93 Yeah. So to me, you know 00:08:45.96\00:08:47.40 there is a lot of that I like about Maslow's 00:08:47.43\00:08:49.27 Theory, but I think it breaks down and really 00:08:49.30\00:08:52.35 one of the reason it breaks down, it's because 00:08:52.38\00:08:53.97 humanist decades based on the believe that people 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.64 are motivated by the goodness within them and 00:08:56.67\00:08:59.20 they will always to fulfill though, always involve 00:08:59.23\00:09:02.59 into higher level of being and of course we 00:09:02.62\00:09:05.20 know from the Bible that humanity is devolving 00:09:05.23\00:09:08.41 rather then evolving, yes Amen, that we're 00:09:08.44\00:09:09.95 innately wicked rather than innately good. 00:09:09.98\00:09:12.48 So, we don't rest on that humanistic premise. 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.91 But, another really intriguing theory was 00:09:15.60\00:09:17.90 authored by a man named Lawrence Kohlberg and 00:09:17.93\00:09:21.24 he talked about the stages of the moral 00:09:21.27\00:09:23.26 development and I find this very, very 00:09:23.29\00:09:26.62 fascinating and I also find it very Biblical. 00:09:26.65\00:09:29.93 He talked about, how children's start out 00:09:30.98\00:09:32.77 and basically children are motivated by two 00:09:32.80\00:09:36.47 things, a hope of reward and a fear of punishment. 00:09:36.50\00:09:40.57 Okay, so little children are motivated by 00:09:40.60\00:09:43.85 lollipops and spankings, they will avoid the 00:09:43.88\00:09:46.62 spanking and they're will try to acquire the 00:09:46.65\00:09:48.89 lollipop. That's basically, how we're as 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.44 the children and then kind of in the middle, 00:09:51.47\00:09:53.84 you know of life. We go through, you know lay 00:09:53.87\00:09:56.67 childhood add lesions, young adulthood and we 00:09:56.70\00:10:00.09 go to different stages of moral development and 00:10:00.12\00:10:02.26 that's basically the same essential motives 00:10:02.29\00:10:05.38 being afraid of failure or afraid of punishment 00:10:05.41\00:10:09.20 and then hoping for reward, but they're 00:10:09.23\00:10:11.37 sort of translated into the social realm. 00:10:11.40\00:10:13.44 Because people become more socially geared as 00:10:13.47\00:10:16.08 they get older. So they're afraid of social 00:10:16.11\00:10:18.97 punishments, you know ostracism or being 00:10:19.00\00:10:20.74 rejected and they're seeking after social 00:10:20.77\00:10:23.38 acceptance in that type of thing and then 00:10:23.41\00:10:25.77 according to Kohlberg in the latter stages of 00:10:25.80\00:10:28.42 moral development. People start to develop 00:10:28.45\00:10:31.45 principle based motivations, ultimately 00:10:32.51\00:10:36.35 resulting in the highest stage of moral 00:10:36.38\00:10:39.95 development, which is called post conventional 00:10:39.98\00:10:42.01 and that is that right is based up on universal 00:10:42.04\00:10:45.18 principles and that person that achieves that 00:10:45.21\00:10:47.66 highest stage of moral development is actuated 00:10:47.69\00:10:50.72 or motivated by this Universal Principles of 00:10:50.75\00:10:53.37 Right. He does things or she does things just 00:10:53.40\00:10:56.09 because they're right and I think that's a very 00:10:56.12\00:10:59.04 appropriate and accurate model of how people 00:10:59.07\00:11:02.59 progress from ones stage to another. 00:11:02.62\00:11:04.31 Amen. If they're maturing on 00:11:04.34\00:11:06.88 God's time table, but the problem is, that I mean 00:11:06.91\00:11:10.45 somebody adults that our biologically adults. 00:11:10.48\00:11:14.05 But they're really operating on the motives 00:11:14.08\00:11:16.22 of the two year old and I could say the same for 00:11:16.25\00:11:18.93 myself, it times of my life. You know, we can be 00:11:18.96\00:11:22.08 very childish even though we're biologically 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.91 mature. So, people, my point are the people 00:11:24.94\00:11:26.77 just naturally mature into that higher stage of 00:11:26.80\00:11:30.27 development. It takes something beyond of just 00:11:30.30\00:11:33.04 people, you know, living and learning. 00:11:33.07\00:11:34.96 It takes something divine. 00:11:34.99\00:11:37.07 And you know some of that divine in my 00:11:37.10\00:11:39.93 estimation and you are talking, I just turn to 00:11:39.96\00:11:41.80 Romans 12:2 because this scripture came to my 00:11:41.83\00:11:44.15 mind that says, Do not be conformed to this 00:11:44.18\00:11:47.78 world, but be transformed by the renewing of your 00:11:47.81\00:11:52.51 mind, that you may prove. What is that good, 00:11:52.54\00:11:54.22 and acceptable, and perfect will of God and I 00:11:54.25\00:11:57.71 believe, I've read a study that said that the 00:11:57.74\00:12:01.60 frontal lobe, especially of young boys, 00:12:01.63\00:12:04.70 the frontal lobe in a teenage boy has as much 00:12:04.73\00:12:08.51 slower development, that's right, rather than 00:12:08.54\00:12:10.10 teenage female, but as the frontal lobe begins 00:12:10.13\00:12:14.45 to developed or are you spirituality is. 00:12:14.48\00:12:16.79 Well, my question would be, do they ever catch 00:12:16.82\00:12:18.82 up? That's a good question. 00:12:18.85\00:12:21.01 Do you know the answer? 00:12:21.04\00:12:22.01 I don't know the answer, do you? 00:12:22.02\00:12:23.48 Okay, I'm just curious, I think they do, 00:12:23.51\00:12:24.48 I think they do. Okay, but when you 00:12:24.49\00:12:27.13 think of it. I shouldn't say that, because I might 00:12:27.16\00:12:29.64 somebody write me on that, the when you think 00:12:29.67\00:12:32.92 about it. The transformation were we 00:12:32.95\00:12:36.91 really do begin to seek the type of action are 00:12:36.94\00:12:44.54 motive for action is to pleased God that's when 00:12:44.57\00:12:48.34 we really begin when we are in the word of God 00:12:48.37\00:12:51.06 then the more word we've in us, the more we want 00:12:51.09\00:12:54.05 to actually please our Lord, because we're 00:12:54.08\00:12:58.54 learning about what pleases him. We learn 00:12:58.57\00:13:00.92 his perfect will and it's that transforming power 00:13:00.95\00:13:04.99 of the word of God that does confirm our mind. 00:13:05.02\00:13:08.04 Amen, Amen. But, my point is that they're has 00:13:08.07\00:13:12.49 be some kind of divine intervention, some 00:13:12.52\00:13:14.73 kind of super natural interposition in the 00:13:14.76\00:13:18.05 human beings life in order to get them from 00:13:18.08\00:13:20.05 stage one to the final stage of moral 00:13:20.08\00:13:22.68 development, it doesn't just happened. 00:13:22.71\00:13:24.09 We don't have some kind of maturity time clock, 00:13:24.94\00:13:27.26 that's just innately within us the naturally progresses. 00:13:27.29\00:13:30.31 To a high stage of moral development and left to 00:13:30.35\00:13:32.78 our own devices, we'll devolve instead of 00:13:32.81\00:13:34.97 evolve, exactly, and will become more and more 00:13:35.00\00:13:37.28 in Satan image less and less and God's image. 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.89 So, God change is all that of course when he 00:13:39.92\00:13:42.96 enters our experience. But to me the basic 00:13:42.99\00:13:46.02 difference between all of these human theories is 00:13:46.05\00:13:48.11 valuable as many of them are. These humanistic 00:13:48.14\00:13:50.43 theories basically teach that people get their on 00:13:50.46\00:13:53.47 their own and my believe as a Christian counselor 00:13:53.50\00:13:56.18 is that when man fallen to sin, he created a 00:13:56.21\00:13:58.87 God's sized problem. He created a problem 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.81 bigger then he himself could fix. Secular 00:14:01.84\00:14:04.55 psychology teaches us that, yes we've a problem 00:14:04.58\00:14:07.18 and we can fix that problem. Christian 00:14:07.21\00:14:09.44 psychology teaches us that, we've a problem in 00:14:09.47\00:14:12.25 our sinfulness, in our fallowness and only God 00:14:12.28\00:14:14.96 can fix it so. There has to be this divine 00:14:14.99\00:14:17.66 intervention in an individual's life in order 00:14:17.69\00:14:21.45 for them to get to the place where Paul, 00:14:21.48\00:14:23.08 got where he said when I was a child, I spoke as 00:14:23.11\00:14:25.86 child, thought as a child and reason does a child. 00:14:25.89\00:14:27.80 But when I became man, I put away childish 00:14:27.83\00:14:30.49 hings. How many adults do we know that never 00:14:30.52\00:14:33.26 put away those childish things? 00:14:33.29\00:14:34.69 That's true. People that are 00:14:34.72\00:14:35.69 squabbling in their marriages as if they are 00:14:35.70\00:14:37.51 two year olds, yes, you know, four year olds 00:14:37.54\00:14:39.60 maybe. People that are engaging in back-biting 00:14:39.63\00:14:44.40 and gossip, you know tearing down their 00:14:44.43\00:14:46.92 neighbor, handling relationships in a very 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.15 immature manner or just not even managing 00:14:49.19\00:14:51.36 themselves well, because they've never matured 00:14:51.39\00:14:54.29 beyond that very early stage of moral 00:14:54.32\00:14:57.03 development. They need an experience with a 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.51 Lord they need a divine in feeling. 00:14:59.54\00:15:01.62 You know, when you were talking Jennifer. 00:15:01.65\00:15:03.33 I was thinking, because you use the word 00:15:03.36\00:15:05.13 self-discipline and I was just thinking that a Paul 00:15:05.16\00:15:10.71 wrote II Timothy and II Timothy 1:7 and 00:15:10.74\00:15:14.90 you know, you see if I'm on the same as you here, 00:15:15.28\00:15:18.49 it's in Second Timothy 1:7, Paul wrote if I can 00:15:18.52\00:15:22.19 find it here, He said God has not given us the 00:15:22.22\00:15:26.85 spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, 00:15:26.88\00:15:28.99 and of a sound mind or self discipline some 00:15:29.02\00:15:32.46 translation says or self controls with the 00:15:32.49\00:15:36.14 amplifies says. So, essentially what 00:15:36.17\00:15:38.25 saying is that this development, if we're 00:15:38.28\00:15:43.16 going to evolve instead of Godly principle. 00:15:43.19\00:15:46.51 Amen. It takes, these is really 00:15:46.54\00:15:48.73 no such thing as self discipline. It has to be 00:15:48.76\00:15:53.89 motivated I mean it comes from the Lord. 00:15:53.92\00:15:56.83 He gives us a spirit. Amen, yeah. 00:15:56.86\00:15:58.87 To, he's the one that actually is initiating. 00:15:58.90\00:16:02.88 That's right. His ability for us to 00:16:02.91\00:16:04.73 control the selfish tendency is that we've. 00:16:04.76\00:16:07.17 Workout your own salvation with fear and 00:16:07.20\00:16:08.85 trembling but it's God that works and you both 00:16:08.88\00:16:11.44 to willing to do, so you wrestling with 00:16:11.47\00:16:14.15 You know, God created us for self-mastery, 00:16:14.19\00:16:16.84 but isn't as in our fallen condition is it a 00:16:16.87\00:16:19.86 self-mastery, that is self-generated. 00:16:19.89\00:16:21.83 Yeah. No it is not, it's a 00:16:21.86\00:16:24.06 self-mastery that is empowered it is initiated 00:16:24.09\00:16:27.01 and had every stage and powered by forces 00:16:27.04\00:16:30.71 outside of ourselves. i. e. God himself and 00:16:30.74\00:16:33.74 heavenly agencies, his Holy Spirit, you know the 00:16:33.77\00:16:36.93 intervention of angles or whatever we've to 00:16:36.96\00:16:39.26 constantly have. This external power supply 00:16:39.29\00:16:42.54 coming into our lives. Absolutely. 00:16:42.57\00:16:44.35 Or we will not be able to fill the propos for which 00:16:44.38\00:16:47.64 God created us and to be to live as if in his image, 00:16:47.67\00:16:53.05 which is calling. But at the same time God did 00:16:53.08\00:16:57.72 created us for self-mastery, he created 00:16:57.75\00:17:00.15 us with this kingly powers, reason conscious, 00:17:00.18\00:17:03.27 the ability to believe what we don't see to fix 00:17:03.30\00:17:06.40 our faith on the more sure word of prophecy. 00:17:06.43\00:17:08.83 That's more sure, and event he witness of our 00:17:08.86\00:17:10.96 senses. Amen. 00:17:10.99\00:17:11.96 God has created us with these kingly powers, 00:17:11.97\00:17:14.17 these governing powers and they were mend to 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.86 rule over the other aspects of our being, 00:17:16.89\00:17:19.16 our appetites, our passions, our emotions, 00:17:19.19\00:17:22.32 we were design to such way that's how we 00:17:22.35\00:17:24.96 function the best, when those kingly powers are 00:17:24.99\00:17:27.84 in dominates or in control. We're turned 00:17:27.87\00:17:30.18 upside down, because of the fall. 00:17:30.21\00:17:31.72 You know, I love, you just moved into two of my 00:17:31.75\00:17:34.80 favorite passage or scripture are in 00:17:34.83\00:17:36.72 Philippians 2:12, I used to really get hung up on 00:17:36.75\00:17:39.12 that were. Paul writes and says, work out your 00:17:39.15\00:17:42.69 own salvation with fear and trembling and I did, 00:17:42.72\00:17:45.52 I mean, I was trying to do more best for the Lord 00:17:45.55\00:17:48.53 and I was fearing and trembling and the church, 00:17:48.56\00:17:52.26 the denomination in which I grow up, which I left 00:17:52.29\00:17:56.84 at the age of about 28. I guess, but, yeah, 00:17:56.87\00:17:59.63 that denomination taught us that, if you just want 00:17:59.66\00:18:02.95 perfect. God was getting ready to spew you out at 00:18:02.98\00:18:05.77 his mouth and strike you with the lightening bolt, 00:18:05.80\00:18:07.62 just striking with the lightening bolt, 00:18:07.65\00:18:08.94 I've thought God, you were toast, I was, 00:18:08.97\00:18:10.81 I'm read and so you would and I wouldn't do 00:18:10.84\00:18:13.51 all I could, but I can't never do enough then I 00:18:13.54\00:18:15.88 get discouraged and it walk away. 00:18:15.91\00:18:17.65 And then finally one day as I was studying and 00:18:18.50\00:18:20.80 thinking about that's scripture. The Lord just 00:18:20.83\00:18:23.60 impressed up on me so much that you cannot 00:18:23.63\00:18:26.33 separate Philippians 2:12 from Philippians 2:13. 00:18:26.36\00:18:29.20 Yes, Amen. Because essentially 00:18:29.23\00:18:30.59 Paul say workout you own salvation with fear and 00:18:30.62\00:18:33.63 trembling, but not in our own study. 00:18:33.66\00:18:36.14 That's right. Amen. Because the next verses, 00:18:36.17\00:18:38.11 who it is God, who is all the while and work 00:18:38.14\00:18:42.64 within you to willing to do, to willing to act 00:18:42.67\00:18:45.83 according to his good pleasures so, what was 00:18:45.86\00:18:48.63 the word you called that, that you're, the word? 00:18:48.66\00:18:51.94 Self-mastery. No the powered word you say. 00:18:51.97\00:18:54.74 About the like external power source. 00:18:55.10\00:18:57.16 There is an external power source that must 00:18:57.19\00:18:58.98 come into our lives. Okay. 00:18:59.01\00:19:00.54 So, that process of self-mastery must be 00:19:00.57\00:19:02.88 initiated and then empowered by God 00:19:02.91\00:19:05.48 God throughout the process of maturity. 00:19:05.51\00:19:07.20 Absolutely. As you were talking 00:19:07.23\00:19:08.50 about that I was thinking about how people go 00:19:08.53\00:19:10.54 through those. What we might call legalistic 00:19:10.57\00:19:12.33 experiences as where they're trying to do 00:19:12.36\00:19:14.23 God's willing in their own strength and their 00:19:14.26\00:19:16.04 living in a state of fear, you know God gave us the 00:19:16.07\00:19:18.63 fight or flight response, as a means of coping with 00:19:18.66\00:19:21.63 the dangerous world. The problem as if we live 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.66 on fear eventually the fight or flight response 00:19:24.69\00:19:27.69 itself will cause physical break down will 00:19:27.72\00:19:29.93 be a danger to us. So, people that are in a 00:19:29.96\00:19:33.11 religious context were they're encourage to be 00:19:33.14\00:19:35.50 motivated by fear for a long period of time will 00:19:35.53\00:19:37.95 often break down and though if the apathy will 00:19:37.98\00:19:41.27 follow fear. Their nervous system literally 00:19:41.30\00:19:44.10 collapse as they get to a place where are they 00:19:44.13\00:19:45.63 doing even care anymore, because their nervous 00:19:45.66\00:19:47.87 system just can't manage. 00:19:47.90\00:19:49.10 You've seen that happen, I've seen that happen to 00:19:49.13\00:19:50.67 people. I've to, it will reminds 00:19:50.70\00:19:52.02 me of what Salomon's said in the book of 00:19:52.05\00:19:54.08 Ecclesiastes, he said be not righteous overmuch, 00:19:54.11\00:19:57.74 why should you destroy yourself. 00:19:57.77\00:19:59.85 Umm! Isn't that interesting? 00:19:59.88\00:20:01.41 That is an interesting. And if I can quote 00:20:01.44\00:20:03.53 Ellen White, she said excess of caution is it 00:20:03.56\00:20:06.55 attendant with his much, these many problems as 00:20:06.58\00:20:09.89 excess or not enough caution, so. If you've 00:20:11.14\00:20:13.81 too much caution, you're bringing as much 00:20:13.84\00:20:15.82 trouble upon yourself as if you've not enough 00:20:15.85\00:20:18.36 caution. We need to stay balance, do we need to 00:20:18.39\00:20:20.80 realize that our power source is Jesus. 00:20:20.83\00:20:22.97 Amen. So. 00:20:23.00\00:20:24.27 That's a good word balance. 00:20:24.30\00:20:25.91 Yeah. Now, let me ask you 00:20:25.94\00:20:27.03 this, because our time is going by quickly. 00:20:27.06\00:20:30.23 Sometimes people will say and I'm upset it 00:20:31.11\00:20:33.59 myself, I don't feel motivated. 00:20:33.62\00:20:36.77 Yeah, Amen. How that you, 00:20:36.80\00:20:38.47 we're promise to you that. We're gonna tell 00:20:38.50\00:20:40.78 you today, how to get motivated. 00:20:40.81\00:20:42.32 That's good. When someone says, 00:20:42.35\00:20:43.99 they don't feel motivated. 00:20:44.02\00:20:45.47 What do you say to them? 00:20:45.50\00:20:46.47 When people tell me that they're not motivated, 00:20:46.48\00:20:48.89 what they are saying is. I don't feel motivated 00:20:48.92\00:20:51.16 and many of those people operate on the basic 00:20:51.19\00:20:54.59 premise, that they can't do something until they 00:20:54.62\00:20:58.56 feel like doing it. That is the basic 00:20:58.59\00:21:01.43 believe that many people have, I can't do it, 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.89 unless I feel like do again and so to them. 00:21:04.92\00:21:07.30 Feeling like doing something is equivalent 00:21:07.33\00:21:10.71 to being motivated to do something. 00:21:10.74\00:21:12.53 But, this is not true, according to Biblical 00:21:13.89\00:21:16.96 teaching. People can actually learn how to do 00:21:16.99\00:21:19.65 things, but they might not feel like doing. 00:21:19.68\00:21:21.79 But it does take this divine intervention and 00:21:22.73\00:21:25.03 the thing that I think, I was the new covenant 00:21:25.06\00:21:27.66 and how God said in Jeremiah Chapter 31. 00:21:27.69\00:21:30.18 I will put my laws in their minds and write it 00:21:30.21\00:21:33.82 on their heart. Amen. 00:21:33.85\00:21:35.46 That's the first stage of this final stage of moral 00:21:35.49\00:21:38.50 development, you know, when we, if we're ever 00:21:38.53\00:21:40.69 go and come to unsurety it's gonna be because 00:21:40.72\00:21:43.06 God put his laws in our mind and wrote it on our 00:21:43.09\00:21:46.29 heart. Then we could be guided by those timeless 00:21:46.32\00:21:50.77 principles that come straight from his 00:21:50.80\00:21:52.91 character of love. We can be guided by those 00:21:52.94\00:21:55.42 principles into maturity, but we will come to the 00:21:55.46\00:21:59.18 place where we don't feel like doing. 00:21:59.21\00:22:01.59 We should be so naive is to think that they just 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.80 because we're a born again Christian fallowing 00:22:03.83\00:22:06.74 Jesus, so the disciple of his and warning to do his 00:22:06.77\00:22:08.98 willing choosing to live our lives for his glory, 00:22:09.01\00:22:11.83 we should not be so naive is to think that there 00:22:11.86\00:22:14.18 won't be many times when we don't really feel 00:22:14.21\00:22:16.63 like doing, what we know we should do. Amen? 00:22:16.66\00:22:19.39 Amen. I mean, won't there 00:22:19.42\00:22:20.78 will be times? So, let's not be naive of that some 00:22:20.81\00:22:24.19 people entertain a notion of the Christian 00:22:24.22\00:22:26.10 experience that they always feel motivated to 00:22:26.13\00:22:29.05 do the right thing. Now, I'm not saying they 00:22:29.08\00:22:30.38 would never feel motivated, sometimes 00:22:30.41\00:22:31.99 which is flows and it's always the best one it's 00:22:32.02\00:22:34.32 flowing straight out of our heart, 00:22:34.35\00:22:37.55 you know so to speak. 00:22:37.58\00:22:38.55 But they're will be times, when there is 00:22:38.56\00:22:39.96 a pull one direction to the 00:22:40.00\00:22:41.66 wrong thing and then our conscious will pull 00:22:41.69\00:22:43.87 other direction to the right thing and then that 00:22:43.90\00:22:46.89 moment we must make it choice to be motivated 00:22:46.92\00:22:50.27 to do the right thing and so what I do with my 00:22:50.30\00:22:53.20 clients that have this motivation issues. 00:22:53.23\00:22:55.72 I teach them, how to act on principles instead of 00:22:55.75\00:22:59.22 unfeeling. Okay, so explain that. 00:22:59.25\00:23:02.07 What I mean by acting on principles instead 00:23:02.10\00:23:04.15 Let me give you a case in point. 00:23:04.18\00:23:06.15 Okay. This is a client, 00:23:06.18\00:23:07.34 who was very, very unstable and I won't 00:23:07.37\00:23:09.85 going to great detail here, but when people 00:23:09.88\00:23:12.10 become sufficiently unstable in their 00:23:12.13\00:23:14.36 relationships and in their relationship to 00:23:14.39\00:23:17.05 themselves, sometimes they were become very 00:23:17.08\00:23:19.41 self-destructive. Umm! 00:23:19.44\00:23:21.36 Sometimes they will let their relationship just 00:23:21.39\00:23:23.51 we're out of control. This was where there is 00:23:23.54\00:23:25.55 person born; she was just very, very unstable. 00:23:25.58\00:23:28.78 just very, very unstable. So, I thought this 00:23:28.81\00:23:30.84 person, how and I remember the moment 00:23:30.87\00:23:33.05 when the light went on her head. We're walking 00:23:33.08\00:23:35.32 sometime; my clients and I will walk when we 00:23:35.35\00:23:38.51 have sessions believed or not. I think it's even 00:23:38.54\00:23:41.06 more their orthopedics they just sitting and 00:23:41.09\00:23:42.48 talking or it can't be and I remember the 00:23:42.51\00:23:45.15 moment, when the light went off. 00:23:45.18\00:23:46.28 We're walking and I just have been talking to 00:23:46.31\00:23:49.59 her and talking to her about how she didn't have 00:23:49.62\00:23:51.79 to live by your feelings basically and it finally 00:23:51.82\00:23:55.01 broke through and she realized I don't, I can 00:23:55.04\00:23:58.04 do things, even though I don't feel like doing 00:23:58.07\00:24:00.04 things and it was something like cleaning 00:24:00.07\00:24:01.99 her room and her house or something that she 00:24:02.02\00:24:03.63 was procrastinating and it just, it just, 00:24:03.66\00:24:06.34 I mean it sound so stupid, it sound so 00:24:06.37\00:24:08.93 so simple, it sound so basic. But you won't 00:24:08.96\00:24:11.91 believe, how many people on a very subconscious 00:24:11.94\00:24:15.88 level believe that they can only do things, 00:24:15.91\00:24:19.50 when they feel like doing them. So, she finally 00:24:19.53\00:24:22.03 realize on that subconscious the deep 00:24:22.06\00:24:24.33 level kind of some sunk down into the substrate 00:24:24.36\00:24:27.07 of her thinking, she could actually choose to 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.75 do things, even though she didn't feel like 00:24:29.78\00:24:31.36 doing them. You know, it going 00:24:31.39\00:24:33.47 back to Philippians 2:13 where it says God works 00:24:33.50\00:24:36.84 in you too, will into act. 00:24:36.87\00:24:38.98 Yeah. I just teach that's to 00:24:39.01\00:24:40.43 separate phases that first phase by the 00:24:40.46\00:24:43.22 renewing of your mind, if you know what God's 00:24:43.25\00:24:45.22 will is to live healthy, to spend time with him 00:24:45.25\00:24:48.59 or him pray or the good things to do the good 00:24:48.62\00:24:50.71 works and creative for you to do. What you think 00:24:50.74\00:24:54.28 about it, that for works in you to will, it's kind a 00:24:54.31\00:24:57.43 like you, he helps laying you will up with his will. 00:24:57.46\00:25:00.66 Amen. So, that his desires 00:25:00.69\00:25:02.77 began to commit your desire as well, 00:25:02.80\00:25:05.33 but that does mean you really feel like 00:25:05.36\00:25:07.56 doing them. That's right. 00:25:07.59\00:25:08.56 So, he's not gonna force you to act. 00:25:08.57\00:25:10.41 Yeah. So, the very next 00:25:10.44\00:25:11.68 thing, that he does if God more forces to act. 00:25:11.71\00:25:15.79 How does he working to us in us to will went to 00:25:15.82\00:25:19.25 act, I was tell people, there is the one foot gap 00:25:19.28\00:25:22.87 between working in his to will and to act and 00:25:22.90\00:25:25.84 that is that God once we know what's to do. 00:25:25.87\00:25:28.75 Umm! What is right to do, 00:25:28.78\00:25:30.76 he asks us to choose it, to take once step? 00:25:30.79\00:25:34.34 That's right, Amen, that's exactly what I'm saying. 00:25:34.37\00:25:35.53 When you just get, you take one step that's right to do it. 00:25:35.57\00:25:37.93 That's right. And then the power 00:25:37.96\00:25:39.41 of the Holy Spirit shows up and he works in us to 00:25:39.44\00:25:42.36 act. That's right, 00:25:42.39\00:25:43.36 I call it Faith it how you make it, because I don't 00:25:43.37\00:25:46.44 like Faith it how you make it. Because we're 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.23 not fake, we're real, you know. Our Christian 00:25:48.26\00:25:50.09 we're authentic, but faith it's kind of 00:25:50.12\00:25:53.20 like fake it to you make a, because you're not 00:25:53.23\00:25:54.83 there yet experientially. I've use that 00:25:54.86\00:25:57.62 terminology for years that my husband that 00:25:57.65\00:26:00.36 Faith it how you make it, you know it's great 00:26:00.39\00:26:03.07 terminology, because we do have to take that step 00:26:03.10\00:26:05.80 in faith. Amen. 00:26:05.83\00:26:07.38 Before, we've you know, how to people get from 00:26:07.41\00:26:09.74 it to be. How do they get from bad habits, 00:26:09.77\00:26:12.72 to better habits? They've to step out in faith. 00:26:12.75\00:26:15.58 Yeah, we've just a minute left. 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.19 Okay. What we do you tell 00:26:17.22\00:26:18.19 someone, who's out here maybe and know they're 00:26:18.20\00:26:20.50 having self-destructive behavior, because perhaps 00:26:20.53\00:26:23.45 they know they should lose some weight and eat 00:26:23.48\00:26:25.22 healthier, but they just keep going for the junk 00:26:25.25\00:26:27.99 food, what we would you tell them? 00:26:28.02\00:26:29.19 Okay, first thing come to Jesus, don't wait 00:26:29.22\00:26:32.02 until you're sorry, don't' wait for anything, 00:26:32.05\00:26:34.12 just come to him and then. He will give you 00:26:34.15\00:26:36.76 gift of repentance; you take ownership of what 00:26:36.79\00:26:39.77 you've done to yourself it's been harmful. Amen. 00:26:39.80\00:26:42.43 And then you pray for strengthen to over come; 00:26:42.47\00:26:45.07 you're receive him and his grace. 00:26:45.10\00:26:46.62 Pray for strengthen to over come and then live 00:26:46.65\00:26:48.62 in accordance with you prayers. 00:26:48.65\00:26:50.01 And make no provisions for this 00:26:50.04\00:26:52.04 flash. Flash, yes. Amen. 00:26:52.07\00:26:53.82 It was in Roman 14 something I think over he 00:26:53.85\00:26:55.90 says making. Making of provision 00:26:55.93\00:26:57.65 for the first of the fill the less there are. 00:26:57.68\00:26:59.59 Yes. Yes. 00:26:59.62\00:27:00.79 So, for us to get motivated, we just have 00:27:00.82\00:27:04.90 to understand basically and recapping. 00:27:04.93\00:27:07.39 We're all motivated sometimes, it's to avoid 00:27:07.42\00:27:11.48 things and both the right things, we know that we 00:27:11.51\00:27:14.15 should do, but what we need to do is just to ask 00:27:14.18\00:27:17.81 the Lord for his strength, his power to 00:27:17.84\00:27:20.45 be making perfect in us. We need to pray, 00:27:20.48\00:27:23.08 we need to choose to start doing it. If you 00:27:23.11\00:27:26.22 can't get around to clean in your house, 00:27:26.25\00:27:28.55 just settle little timer for 15 minutes and go do 00:27:28.58\00:27:31.29 something for 15 minutes and clean in your house, 00:27:31.32\00:27:33.45 right. Yeah, also it helps to 00:27:33.48\00:27:35.20 connect to another person, a life coach, 00:27:35.23\00:27:37.04 a consoler, or prayer partner. 00:27:37.07\00:27:38.52 Amen. Sometimes we need 00:27:38.55\00:27:39.68 little nudge from another fellow wanderer. 00:27:39.71\00:27:43.63 That's right, Amen. Jennifer Jill Schwirzer. 00:27:45.91\00:27:47.90 It always so much fun. It is. It always go 00:27:47.93\00:27:50.08 so fast, you are here. Yeah. 00:27:50.11\00:27:51.70 I just wanna thank you so much for being here 00:27:51.73\00:27:54.36 and then now it's our time is already all gone, 00:27:54.39\00:27:57.86 but I hope that you saw something today to 00:27:57.89\00:28:01.32 recognize that you can over come lack of 00:28:01.35\00:28:03.49 motivation by the Holy Spirit help you today to 00:28:03.52\00:28:07.91 do what you're to be doing. 00:28:07.94\00:28:09.85 Thanks for joining us. 00:28:09.88\00:28:11.13
