Hi, I am Shelley Quinn. Please join us today 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 On Issues and Answers as we talk about wonderful 00:00:02.96\00:00:06.08 stories of the Adventist Heritage. 00:00:06.11\00:00:08.14 I don't care how old you are. We all seem 00:00:30.34\00:00:32.76 to enjoy stories of the past. 00:00:32.79\00:00:34.34 Stories that - have to do with something about 00:00:34.37\00:00:36.88 our heritage and you know the Bible even tells us 00:00:36.91\00:00:39.22 in Jeremiah at 31:21 "Set up for yourself road signs 00:00:39.25\00:00:43.58 look back and turn your heart toward the highway 00:00:43.61\00:00:47.51 that you came on and this is what we're going to 00:00:47.54\00:00:50.70 do today, is retrace our steps of Adventist Heritage 00:00:50.73\00:00:54.73 with our very special guest Dr. Cindy Tutsch. 00:00:54.76\00:00:57.97 And Cindy, so glad to have you back again. 00:00:58.00\00:01:00.35 Now you are the Associate Director for the 00:01:00.38\00:01:04.05 Ellen G. White Estate. That's right. 00:01:04.08\00:01:06.53 Its located at the general conference 00:01:06.56\00:01:08.42 which is Adventist World Headquarters 00:01:08.45\00:01:10.27 in Silver spring, Maryland. 00:01:10.30\00:01:11.27 And Ellen White was one of, I mean she is probably 00:01:11.28\00:01:14.57 the most translated female author. 00:01:14.60\00:01:17.25 I think in the world I thought. 00:01:17.28\00:01:18.60 Yes, indeed. In fact, her her's book Steps to Christ; 00:01:18.63\00:01:21.52 The devotional book, "Steps to Christ" 00:01:21.55\00:01:22.82 has been translated in over a 150 languages. 00:01:22.85\00:01:25.59 How wonderful? Now she was also one of the 00:01:25.62\00:01:28.10 founders for the Adventist Church. 00:01:28.13\00:01:30.93 That's right. As a group of people, 00:01:30.96\00:01:32.40 interdenominational people came together in 00:01:32.43\00:01:34.79 Bible study and then started the advent movement. 00:01:34.82\00:01:37.80 Now Tell me before we get started here 00:01:37.83\00:01:40.58 how long have you been with the 00:01:40.61\00:01:42.84 Ellen White Institute now. 00:01:42.87\00:01:45.49 I've been there for 00:01:45.52\00:01:46.49 eight and half years already. 00:01:46.50\00:01:47.62 Alright. And you came from? 00:01:47.65\00:01:48.96 I came from Washington State where I was 00:01:48.99\00:01:51.06 Youth Director that means I was the Director for 00:01:51.09\00:01:54.86 youth activities for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:54.89\00:01:56.91 around the Seattle area. The Washington conference 00:01:56.94\00:01:59.40 we called it which was about seven-day Churches 00:01:59.43\00:02:01.57 there and I directed youth activities and before that 00:02:01.60\00:02:04.90 I was a Pastor and before that I was a Bible teacher. 00:02:04.93\00:02:07.49 Wonderful. So you always had, I know you have 00:02:07.52\00:02:10.11 three children of your own and you've always been 00:02:10.14\00:02:12.07 drawn to youth ministry, haven't you? 00:02:12.10\00:02:13.84 That's right. That's wonderful. 00:02:13.87\00:02:15.10 I love kids. So tell us a little bit 00:02:15.25\00:02:17.20 about our heritage as Adventist. 00:02:17.23\00:02:20.27 You know I love these stories because I think 00:02:20.30\00:02:22.40 they kind of help us identify 00:02:22.43\00:02:24.58 with a very special spiritual pioneers and 00:02:24.61\00:02:28.23 the heritage that we have - 00:02:28.26\00:02:29.90 I think of Joshua 4, where after the God had 00:02:29.93\00:02:33.85 Miraculously part of the Jordan River and 00:02:33.88\00:02:36.31 Israelites had gone through it, 00:02:36.34\00:02:37.77 then the Lord instructed them to take twelve stones 00:02:37.80\00:02:41.05 out of the River and build an alter 00:02:41.08\00:02:42.94 and every time they saw that alter it reminder 00:02:42.97\00:02:46.08 to them of the wonder that God had done 00:02:46.11\00:02:48.18 in helping them to get across that river 00:02:48.21\00:02:50.13 and into the promise land. 00:02:50.16\00:02:51.86 And so these stories I think I just 00:02:51.89\00:02:53.66 reminders to us that what God has done for 00:02:53.69\00:02:56.08 our people for our denomination to bring us 00:02:56.11\00:03:00.17 together to be Herald of the good news 00:03:00.20\00:03:02.04 that Jesus is coming soon. 00:03:02.07\00:03:03.25 Amen. And which story do 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.44 you want to start with today? 00:03:05.47\00:03:06.63 Well, the story that I think I would like to begin with 00:03:06.66\00:03:09.32 happened probably around 1845, before they are even 00:03:09.35\00:03:13.55 was a seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:03:13.58\00:03:15.15 It was after the great disappointment of 00:03:15.18\00:03:17.40 October 22, 1844. When the -- had 00:03:17.43\00:03:20.68 preached that Jesus would come on that date 00:03:20.71\00:03:22.53 He had not come and so the Adventist were 00:03:22.56\00:03:25.04 a little bit distress. There were no 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.80 Seventh-Day Adventist at this time. 00:03:26.83\00:03:28.24 These were groups of people from many different 00:03:28.27\00:03:30.20 denominations who would look forward to the 00:03:30.23\00:03:31.80 coming of Jesus. And about two months after that 00:03:31.83\00:03:34.79 great disappointment, young 17 year old Ellen Harmon 00:03:34.82\00:03:38.19 had a vision, a special message from God 00:03:38.22\00:03:41.08 in which he told her about this path 00:03:41.11\00:03:42.91 going from earth up to the New Jerusalem 00:03:42.94\00:03:45.87 and the believers were walking on this path 00:03:45.90\00:03:47.83 and some were falling off into the dark road below 00:03:47.86\00:03:50.36 And after she came out of that vision 00:03:50.39\00:03:54.15 that message from God. About a week later 00:03:54.18\00:03:56.30 God called her to a special ministry for him 00:03:56.33\00:03:59.61 And as a prophetic minister for God. 00:03:59.64\00:04:02.92 But of course, you know, she is 17 years old 00:04:02.95\00:04:05.79 she is weak. She is a woman and the day when woman have 00:04:05.82\00:04:08.65 little credibility. She is uneducated. 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.77 And so there were some persons who wondered 00:04:11.80\00:04:14.66 that you have too much pickles and ice cream 00:04:14.69\00:04:16.88 the night before. Did she really have a message from God? 00:04:16.91\00:04:19.66 And my story today concerns establishing 00:04:20.44\00:04:25.37 Ellen White's credibility, not by feelings and 00:04:25.40\00:04:28.29 emotions, that by the word of God. 00:04:28.32\00:04:30.22 And you know I want to just point out 00:04:30.25\00:04:32.57 because many of our viewers, and our audience are not 00:04:32.60\00:04:36.54 Seventh-Day Adventist so I do want to 00:04:36.57\00:04:37.89 point out that Seventh-Day Adventist based all of our 00:04:37.92\00:04:40.45 doctrines on the Bible. And one think that 00:04:40.48\00:04:42.99 we appreciate about Ellen White as one of the 00:04:43.02\00:04:45.32 founders of this Church is that, she did as well 00:04:45.35\00:04:48.27 And she wrote believe we were talking about 00:04:48.30\00:04:50.90 this earlier today that she wrote about Jesus Christ 00:04:50.93\00:04:54.81 most and then the Holy Spirit was her second 00:04:54.84\00:04:57.55 That's right. Most favorite topic, 00:04:57.58\00:05:00.10 That's right. And she always pointed 00:05:00.13\00:05:01.49 back to the scriptures. And she never wanted to 00:05:01.52\00:05:03.71 elevate her writings above the scriptures 00:05:03.74\00:05:05.82 Oh! it's called herself a lesser life 00:05:05.85\00:05:07.84 pointing into the greater life. 00:05:07.87\00:05:09.41 Exactly, the Scriptures, even her 00:05:09.44\00:05:11.79 language in which she writes is just 00:05:11.82\00:05:13.38 seeped in scripture because she was such a 00:05:15.87\00:05:16.84 student of the Bible. Yes, Amen. 00:05:16.85\00:05:17.82 Well, this certainly after Ellen White was called to this 00:05:17.83\00:05:21.46 Prophetic ministry a group of Adventists 00:05:21.49\00:05:24.12 in the Boston area developed some 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.23 Fanatical teachings. They believed that they were 00:05:26.26\00:05:28.81 holy and sinless and that they could not sin because 00:05:28.84\00:05:31.32 they had been set apart and they were beyond the 00:05:31.35\00:05:34.00 power of temptation. And they also believe 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.41 that the year of jubilee had come which meant 00:05:36.44\00:05:38.28 that the men could do no work during that year. 00:05:38.31\00:05:40.97 So you know, wouldn't this to be kept? 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.00 The women do it. You know, they couldn't 00:05:43.03\00:05:45.29 go out and get jobs. And people were saying 00:05:45.32\00:05:46.84 how can we do this? How will we support our 00:05:46.87\00:05:49.10 families? And they said, well they are the 00:05:49.13\00:05:50.99 rich. So, just sell everything they have and give 00:05:51.02\00:05:53.27 to the rest of us and we can all go for 00:05:53.30\00:05:54.97 whole year without working. So, there is ahead 00:05:55.00\00:05:58.58 of the Adventist believers there just 00:05:58.61\00:06:00.88 South of Boston named Mr. Nichols who 00:06:00.91\00:06:03.29 thought may be Ellen Herman could be helpful in 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.59 counter-acting and combating some of this fanaticism. 00:06:05.62\00:06:08.58 So, he invited her and one of her sisters, Sara to 00:06:08.61\00:06:11.92 come to his house. 00:06:11.95\00:06:12.92 The name of these leaders of this fanatical 00:06:12.95\00:06:15.96 movement was Mr. Sir- John and Mr. Robbins. 00:06:15.99\00:06:18.61 And they had always said, Ellen Herman because 00:06:18.64\00:06:20.90 that was her maid name. Right. 00:06:20.93\00:06:22.80 They had always said that her visions were devil. 00:06:22.83\00:06:25.29 And she were in their presence then she could not 00:06:25.32\00:06:27.77 possibly had a vision. And they also said that 00:06:27.80\00:06:31.18 they were the, called to be the leaders of this 00:06:31.21\00:06:33.93 movement. But this said that if they ever had the 00:06:33.96\00:06:36.28 opportunity to see her, they would be very grateful 00:06:36.31\00:06:38.36 because they knew that she can have never have a vision 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.12 in their presence because they were of the God 00:06:40.15\00:06:41.67 and she was of the devil. Well, here they are 00:06:41.70\00:06:44.55 sitting in the living room, visiting and they ain't 00:06:44.58\00:06:46.38 Mr. Nichols sees the carriage coming down 00:06:46.41\00:06:48.57 the lane and here it is this Mr. Sir John 00:06:48.60\00:06:50.49 and Mr. Robbins and he thinks oh great, 00:06:50.52\00:06:52.17 you know Ellen Herman is here. We can all visit. 00:06:52.20\00:06:53.98 We can talk. We can say the Bible together. 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.64 And may be we can, you know, work out some of these 00:06:55.67\00:06:57.89 difficulties. So, he went out to meet them. 00:06:57.92\00:07:00.09 And they said, ohh yeah we're So glad to be here with 00:07:00.12\00:07:02.40 we could spend the night at your house, 00:07:02.43\00:07:03.76 and he said great. He said, you will be glad to know 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.80 that Ellen Herman is here. Mr. Robbins looked to 00:07:05.83\00:07:08.86 Mr. Sir John and Mr. Sir- John looked to Mr. Robbins 00:07:08.89\00:07:11.28 and he said, we just remembered that we have 00:07:11.31\00:07:14.19 another appointment down the roadways 00:07:14.22\00:07:16.26 And Mr. Nichols said, what's up with that? 00:07:16.29\00:07:18.18 You know, I thought you wanted to come in. 00:07:18.21\00:07:19.56 I thought you're going to spend the night. 00:07:19.59\00:07:20.68 Oh! No, no. I wouldn't come in for lot more 00:07:20.71\00:07:22.50 many. So he said, when are you going to meet 00:07:22.53\00:07:24.63 this Ellen Herman who later became known Ellen White. 00:07:24.66\00:07:26.63 They said, well, just have her come up to Boston 00:07:26.66\00:07:29.39 this next Sunday. And she can speak to all of the 00:07:29.42\00:07:31.56 Adventists that are gathered together 00:07:31.59\00:07:33.63 at that time. And he said, alright. 00:07:33.66\00:07:35.64 So when Mr. Nichols told Ellen Herman, and she said 00:07:35.67\00:07:38.67 fine. We all will be happy to do this. 00:07:38.70\00:07:40.24 and so everything was good, but that night 00:07:40.32\00:07:43.91 Ellen Herman had a very short vision in which 00:07:43.94\00:07:47.51 God told her not to go North to Boston 00:07:47.54\00:07:50.39 but to go South about 20 miles to a town 00:07:50.42\00:07:54.17 called Randolph. But when she told 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.56 Mr. Nichols about this the next day 00:07:56.59\00:07:58.44 he was really perplexed because they had already, 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.92 you know, made the commitment that they were going 00:07:59.95\00:08:02.35 to go up to Boston. And he thought all the people think 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.02 you know, if we just don't show up you know, 00:08:05.05\00:08:06.34 no cell phones and no internet, no way, 00:08:06.37\00:08:08.22 no telephones, no way to let people know 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.90 you are not coming. But he believes that 00:08:09.93\00:08:12.63 Ellen Herman's visions were of God because 00:08:12.66\00:08:14.40 they had been tested by the word of God. 00:08:14.43\00:08:16.25 And he thought well, may be God has 00:08:16.28\00:08:18.70 purpose in this. So on Sunday they went 00:08:18.73\00:08:22.27 down to Randolph and as they approached 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.16 the door of Mr. Thayer, where they were going 00:08:24.19\00:08:27.94 to meet. They heard singing and the singing 00:08:27.97\00:08:30.78 was quite loud and they opened the door just as 00:08:30.83\00:08:35.13 Mr. Robbins was telling all the people who were now 00:08:35.16\00:08:39.04 gathered in this town South of Boston 00:08:39.07\00:08:41.37 that Ellen Herman's vision were of the devil and he 00:08:41.40\00:08:44.41 looked at with great surprise to see them because he; 00:08:44.44\00:08:47.37 This was the very man that had agreed to meet her in Boston. 00:08:47.40\00:08:50.89 Exactly. And he had gone Southway, 00:08:50.92\00:08:52.57 right; so this just a little prank, you know, this is 00:08:52.60\00:08:54.26 going to be very funny he thought that she and her 00:08:54.29\00:08:56.04 little entourage, would go up to Boston and nobody would be 00:08:56.07\00:08:58.74 there. So, he of course was very startled to see her there 00:08:58.77\00:09:02.22 in Randolph and all the people wanted to hear 00:09:02.25\00:09:04.95 her speak and to hear about her visions and her communications 00:09:04.98\00:09:07.94 that she had had from God and to give them a scriptural study. 00:09:07.97\00:09:10.90 Of course, Mr. Sir John and Mr. Robbins were not eager to 00:09:10.93\00:09:14.79 have this happen at all. So he said, okay, after lunch, 00:09:14.82\00:09:17.03 after lunch. Well, after lunch as Ellen Herman got up 00:09:17.06\00:09:20.76 to speak. She was carried off into vision and it turned 00:09:20.79\00:09:24.46 out to be the longest vision that she ever had lasted 00:09:24.49\00:09:27.25 four hours. And some of her visions were just a few 00:09:27.28\00:09:30.69 moments but this one was 4 hours, but Mr. Robbins 00:09:30.72\00:09:33.67 and Mr. Sir John were so eager for it to not happen 00:09:33.70\00:09:36.22 that they tried to leave the congregation in singing 00:09:36.25\00:09:38.81 they would talk louder then they could so that no one 00:09:38.84\00:09:41.33 would hear her speaking because sometimes when she 00:09:41.36\00:09:43.94 had a vision she would describe that she was seen. 00:09:43.97\00:09:46.77 And here the people were wanting to hear that so much. 00:09:46.80\00:09:49.41 The Robins and Mr. Sir John, they were trying to read from 00:09:49.44\00:09:53.46 scriptures until their voices has got hoarse, but they 00:09:53.49\00:09:56.09 didn't drowned out her voice and the people were saying 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.41 my, you know that she is speaking with a hope and faith 00:09:58.44\00:10:01.40 and courage and talking to us about the Lord and quoting 00:10:01.43\00:10:04.34 from scripture and why could you say that this is 00:10:04.37\00:10:06.81 of the devil, you know, by your fruits you shall know them. 00:10:06.84\00:10:09.57 And you know she is not speaking anything as 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.86 contradictory to Scripture. Now then this Mr. Thayer 00:10:11.89\00:10:15.85 whose home they were in. He wasn't quite sure, 00:10:15.88\00:10:18.43 you know, what to think and he had heard that if he put 00:10:18.46\00:10:21.76 an open Bible on someone who was in a vision that 00:10:21.79\00:10:24.60 if it was of the devil they would come out of immediately. 00:10:24.63\00:10:27.05 So, he suggested to Mr. Sir John that he do that, 00:10:27.08\00:10:29.97 but Mr. Sir John would have nothing of it. 00:10:30.00\00:10:32.22 So, Mr. Thayer went over 00:10:32.25\00:10:33.50 and he put the open Bible on Ellen Herman who was 00:10:33.53\00:10:36.24 kind of reclining in a chair that moment and describing 00:10:36.27\00:10:38.72 the things that she was seeing as God portrayed them to her. 00:10:38.75\00:10:42.58 And when you put this big heavy family Bible like 00:10:42.61\00:10:45.28 we have in those days. On her, she picked it up, 00:10:45.31\00:10:49.60 stood up and she was Freya woman. Her health was not good 00:10:49.63\00:10:53.93 she weighed about 80 pounds. She held this Bible up over 00:10:53.96\00:10:58.30 her head for her granddaughter says, over an 00:10:58.33\00:11:02.06 hour we don't know if that's the case but at least there 00:11:02.09\00:11:04.34 was a very long time. And was quoting from the 00:11:04.37\00:11:08.76 scripture as she turned the page but she couldn't see 00:11:08.79\00:11:11.05 the Bible because it was up above her head. 00:11:11.08\00:11:13.28 So you know what the folks did, they grabbed chairs, jumped 00:11:13.31\00:11:16.79 on the chairs, looked over, and peep down to see if where 00:11:16.82\00:11:19.63 her finger was and where she was quoting was actually 00:11:19.66\00:11:21.92 what the scripture said and sure enough it was. 00:11:21.95\00:11:24.93 And she talked about the wonder of heaven and the richness 00:11:24.96\00:11:28.22 of salvation, through faith in Christ alone and then she 00:11:28.25\00:11:32.23 started talking about the judgment of the in time, 00:11:32.26\00:11:35.25 you know, when those who were doing wicked things would be 00:11:35.28\00:11:37.90 called to judgment. And of course this made Mr. Robins 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.16 and Mr. Sir John extremely uncomfortable and you know, 00:11:41.19\00:11:44.66 when she came out of that vision, the people 00:11:44.69\00:11:47.25 expected Mr. Robbins and Mr.- Sir John to probably go to 00:11:47.28\00:11:51.28 the front and confess that they had been wrong and this 00:11:51.31\00:11:54.83 was a beautiful gift of God, to kind of identify and 00:11:54.86\00:11:57.49 strengthen the fledgling movement. But none of that 00:11:57.52\00:12:00.36 they just gone to slunk out and left. But it was a real 00:12:00.39\00:12:04.20 crossroads in the early Adventist history because 00:12:04.23\00:12:08.14 it helped the people establish 00:12:08.17\00:12:09.71 their faith that God had actually 00:12:09.74\00:12:12.10 called this young woman to the prophetic ministry. 00:12:12.13\00:12:14.67 Not necessarily from the external phenomenon that 00:12:14.70\00:12:18.10 she didn't breath for instance Right. Like Daniel 00:12:18.13\00:12:19.99 didn't breath when he was in vision or the fact that 00:12:20.02\00:12:23.72 that her eyes were open while in vision and she could talk 00:12:23.75\00:12:26.60 but she didn't breath. Well, it wasn't that those physical 00:12:26.63\00:12:29.74 phenomena as striking as that was. It was did, what she 00:12:29.77\00:12:34.40 said harmonized with the way they thought. Amen, With the 00:12:34.43\00:12:37.40 scriptures. And you know, I went at the Ellen White 00:12:37.43\00:12:40.32 Institute and I have seen that the size of that Bible 00:12:40.35\00:12:43.67 and the idea of trying to hold it for minutes your 00:12:43.70\00:12:46.62 arm would be. Exactly. Absolutely, even I've 00:12:46.65\00:12:50.29 heard this is true but I've heard that, that they had 00:12:50.32\00:12:52.15 strong men try to do this who just couldn't even 00:12:52.18\00:12:55.17 hold it up for an hour. Right. Now that particular Bible 00:12:55.20\00:12:58.29 that you saw at the Ellen White Estate, that is not the same 00:12:58.32\00:13:01.52 Bible that she held when she was at this family's home. 00:13:01.55\00:13:03.99 That Bible was probably a little bit smaller still much 00:13:04.02\00:13:06.81 bigger than the Bibles that, you and I use, yes, but 00:13:06.84\00:13:08.65 probably not as big as the one that you saw at 00:13:08.68\00:13:10.44 the estate. That Bible that you saw was the very Bible 00:13:10.47\00:13:14.21 she did hold up in a subsequent vision. 00:13:14.24\00:13:16.49 And sure enough Mr. Miraca, who once came to the 00:13:16.52\00:13:19.14 Ellen White Estate was not able to hold it up like this 00:13:19.17\00:13:21.53 longer than two and half minutes. But again you know 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.45 those physical phenomena as striking and interesting 00:13:24.48\00:13:26.95 as they are. Right. Are not the most important thing 00:13:26.98\00:13:29.29 why? Because they can also counterfeit, 00:13:29.32\00:13:32.25 absolutely, miracled. That's good point. So it has to be 00:13:32.28\00:13:34.74 in conjunction with God's words. Absolutely. 00:13:34.77\00:13:37.16 That is the most important thing. So this little frank 00:13:37.19\00:13:39.42 that they pulled on her, trying to send Ellen White 00:13:39.45\00:13:42.13 to Boston while they went down to South to 00:13:42.16\00:13:45.99 discredit her. It totally backfired on them because 00:13:46.02\00:13:49.82 the Lord spoke to her in a short vision 00:13:49.85\00:13:52.28 telling her where to go. 00:13:52.31\00:13:53.28 Exactly. So, Amen. I hope those lunatics in that group 00:13:53.63\00:13:57.12 were eventually called out of the Church where they worked. 00:13:57.15\00:13:59.56 Actually I think they fell away because we don't hear 00:13:59.59\00:14:01.60 any more from them. The Adventist group continue to 00:14:01.63\00:14:04.70 swell and to strengthen of course ultimately 00:14:04.73\00:14:08.52 colonizing into a denomination in 1863. 00:14:08.55\00:14:11.38 Now you mentioned though Cindy, that they were meeting 00:14:11.41\00:14:13.91 on Sunday. Yes. And we all know that one of the things, 00:14:13.94\00:14:17.01 of course they were at that time just called Adventist. 00:14:17.04\00:14:19.77 Right. But we are now known today as a Seventh-Day 00:14:19.80\00:14:22.56 Adventist. How did the Seventh-Day, you have 00:14:22.59\00:14:25.83 the story on the Seventh-Day Sabbath and how this 00:14:25.86\00:14:28.70 actually began to come in and be embraced by the Church 00:14:28.73\00:14:33.91 as a true Bible doctrine. Right. 00:14:33.94\00:14:36.12 Well it happened in a little mountain village of Washington 00:14:36.15\00:14:38.89 New Hampshire. There was a group of Adventists 00:14:38.92\00:14:41.94 there who were looking forward to the coming of Jesus but 00:14:41.97\00:14:44.05 who were meeting on Sunday and the school teacher there 00:14:44.08\00:14:47.77 named, her name was Delight, and her mother 00:14:47.80\00:14:51.18 Rachel Oakes Preston came to visit. 00:14:51.21\00:14:53.63 Now Rachel Oakes Preston was a seventh day Baptist, 00:14:53.66\00:14:56.40 but there were no seventh day Baptist Churches there and so 00:14:56.43\00:14:59.19 she went with her daughter to this little kind of 00:14:59.22\00:15:01.11 Congregational Church there in Washington, New Hampshire. 00:15:01.14\00:15:04.42 And in the afternoon, the Pastor came to visit her 00:15:04.45\00:15:07.92 as the new person in town. Right. 00:15:07.95\00:15:10.14 And as she was sitting there in her rocking chair, 00:15:10.17\00:15:12.93 she said Brother Wheeler, his name is Frederick Wheeler, 00:15:12.96\00:15:16.03 brother Wheeler, while you were preaching I could 00:15:16.06\00:15:18.54 scarcley contain myself. You say that we should keep 00:15:18.57\00:15:21.72 all Ten Commandments, but you yourself constantly 00:15:21.75\00:15:24.09 break on of them. Now of course, he was indignant, 00:15:24.12\00:15:26.90 answered whatever do you mean and she said, well, 00:15:26.93\00:15:29.96 you know, she said, you keep the first day in 00:15:29.99\00:15:33.42 contradiction to the plain word of God which 00:15:33.45\00:15:36.14 clearly states that the Seventh-Day is the Sabbath 00:15:36.17\00:15:38.50 of the Lord Thy God. Well, you know, this really peaked 00:15:38.53\00:15:41.51 Frederick Wheeler's interest, so he went home and began 00:15:41.54\00:15:44.82 studying about this and as he was studying he would 00:15:44.85\00:15:47.24 come back to his little Sunday keeping Adventist Church 00:15:47.27\00:15:49.64 there and preach about what he was discovering. 00:15:49.67\00:15:51.81 And ultimately two young men in his congregation 00:15:51.84\00:15:56.19 Cyrus and William Farnsworth stood up in front of the 00:15:56.22\00:15:59.08 people that they had known all of their lives and said, 00:15:59.11\00:16:01.56 we want to keep the Seventh-Day Sabbath of the 00:16:01.59\00:16:04.51 Fourth Commandment. Well, in the mean time a man named 00:16:04.54\00:16:08.62 Thomas Preble, wrote a very strongly worded tracked based 00:16:08.65\00:16:12.84 on scripture and supporting Seventh-Day Sabbath observance 00:16:12.87\00:16:16.30 and this tract fell into the hands of Joseph Bates. 00:16:16.33\00:16:19.88 Now Joseph Bates was a man of action. He was formerly 00:16:19.91\00:16:23.34 a sea Captain. He owned his own little shipping business. 00:16:23.37\00:16:26.21 But he sold that retired and put all of his money into 00:16:26.24\00:16:30.61 the cause of God, I mean he was zealous, you know, 00:16:30.64\00:16:32.76 the Lord is coming. We want people to know that. 00:16:32.79\00:16:34.96 We want people to give their hearts to Christ, while theirs 00:16:34.99\00:16:37.43 yet time and I mean he was an Evangelist on fire for God. 00:16:37.46\00:16:41.06 And he was a prominent leader in this group of Adventist, 00:16:41.09\00:16:45.27 no Seventh-day Adventist remember. But he came into 00:16:45.30\00:16:48.36 this tract that Thomas Preble had written, read it 00:16:48.39\00:16:53.03 through and as he is reading this track, and studying this 00:16:53.06\00:16:55.84 track, he becomes convicted of the validity of the 00:16:55.87\00:16:59.38 Seventh-Day Sabbath. And he knew that this little group over 00:16:59.41\00:17:02.81 Washington, New Hampshire had adopted the Seventh-Day 00:17:02.84\00:17:06.07 Sabbath and he thought, well, I want to talk to them. 00:17:06.10\00:17:07.67 So he just took up from his little town of New Bedford, 00:17:07.70\00:17:11.08 Massachusetts. We don't know how he got there, 00:17:11.11\00:17:12.74 may be on foot, may be above on horse back, may be 00:17:12.77\00:17:15.65 partially by boat. He meets the Farnsworth there and 00:17:15.68\00:17:19.18 the biographer tells us under a stand of maple trees 00:17:19.21\00:17:21.39 there are in a little village I have been there 00:17:21.42\00:17:22.84 several times in Washington, New Hampshire. 00:17:22.87\00:17:24.86 He talked with him about the Sabbath all afternoon. 00:17:24.89\00:17:27.54 They stayed up half the night talking about the Sabbath, 00:17:27.57\00:17:29.87 and by the end he 00:17:29.90\00:17:31.54 was committed to keeping the Seventh-Day Sabbath holy. 00:17:31.57\00:17:35.43 Alright. So, he finishes visiting with these new 00:17:35.46\00:17:38.36 Adventist believers, remember there is no organized 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.20 denomination of Seventh-day Adventist that in a sense we 00:17:41.23\00:17:43.15 can call them the first Seventh-day Adventist because 00:17:43.18\00:17:45.26 they looked forward to the coming of Lord 00:17:45.29\00:17:46.67 and they also kept the Seventh-Day Sabbath. So, he 00:17:46.70\00:17:49.51 gets home by whatever means and he was walking across 00:17:49.54\00:17:52.43 the bridge that spans the river that goes to his 00:17:52.46\00:17:54.96 little town of New Bedford and a man named Mr. Hall, accost 00:17:54.99\00:17:58.83 and he says, what's the news Captain Bates, and of course, 00:17:58.86\00:18:02.74 Joseph Bates being overly the Evangelist 00:18:02.77\00:18:04.85 said the news the Seventh-day is the Sabbath of 00:18:04.88\00:18:07.61 the Lord Thy God and Mr. Hall, goes, what you know, 00:18:07.64\00:18:10.98 and so of course here Mr. Bates, Joseph Bates gives him a 00:18:11.01\00:18:14.07 Bible study about the Sabbath right there on the bridge 00:18:14.10\00:18:16.23 and Mr. Hall, becomes Joseph Bates first convert 00:18:16.26\00:18:21.01 to the Seventh-day Sabbath, the of the sanctity of the 00:18:21.04\00:18:23.91 Seventh-day Sabbath. In the meantime Joseph Bates went 00:18:23.94\00:18:28.14 home and thought, you know, I can only be here and here 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.93 and here, but if I write something like you, shall I 00:18:31.96\00:18:35.73 when you write books they go everywhere and he thought if 00:18:35.76\00:18:38.43 I write a little pamphlet or a little book on the 00:18:38.46\00:18:40.44 Seventh-day Sabbath that could go many places that 00:18:40.47\00:18:43.10 I couldn't go. The problem was 00:18:43.13\00:18:45.63 he know, he spent all of his money. 00:18:45.66\00:18:47.33 So, he is sitting there, trying to figure this out and 00:18:47.36\00:18:50.41 starting to study and think how he is going to put 00:18:50.44\00:18:52.68 together this book when his wife, Puddins, comes in 00:18:52.71\00:18:56.06 and she says, I need some flower Joseph, 00:18:56.09\00:18:59.86 I have to finish out my baking, 00:18:59.89\00:19:01.49 and he said, how much do you need and she said ohh 00:19:01.52\00:19:03.33 probably about 4 pounds. So he went into the kitchen 00:19:03.36\00:19:06.25 and picked up a six quote milk pan and toss off down 00:19:06.28\00:19:10.08 to the store to get the flower comes back she was out, 00:19:10.11\00:19:13.24 so he just let it there on the counter in the kitchen and 00:19:13.27\00:19:15.46 goes back to a study and he is sitting there, beginning 00:19:15.49\00:19:17.60 this little book. He is going to write on 00:19:17.63\00:19:19.26 Seventh-day Sabbath, and pretty soon she comes 00:19:19.29\00:19:21.83 and you know hands on hips and she says, Joseph, 00:19:21.86\00:19:25.12 where did the flower come from? He said, 00:19:25.15\00:19:27.41 well, I bought it and she said, well you bought 00:19:27.44\00:19:31.20 four pounds of flower. You who have been all over 00:19:31.23\00:19:34.92 the world on the shipping industry and you used to 00:19:34.95\00:19:37.02 buying a 100 barrels of flowers and you bring just 00:19:37.05\00:19:40.35 this little pile of flowers. Little did she realize? 00:19:40.38\00:19:43.52 She didn't realize. She didn't know that he had 00:19:43.55\00:19:45.96 put their whole fortune into the gospel. And so then 00:19:45.99\00:19:49.80 he confided to her. You know, I spent my last 00:19:49.83\00:19:52.96 Shilling, a York Shilling, was worth about 00:19:52.99\00:19:55.03 twelve and half cents in those days. 00:19:55.06\00:19:56.53 He said, I spent my last Shilling on this flower. 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.86 And that was all, the flower he could afford. Yeah. 00:19:59.89\00:20:02.15 So, she burst into tears and she goes. Oh! Joseph, 00:20:02.18\00:20:04.84 you know, whatever shall we do and. He says 00:20:04.87\00:20:07.68 the Lord will provide and she starts crying and said, 00:20:07.71\00:20:10.17 Oh, Lord! That's what you always say 00:20:10.20\00:20:11.69 the Lord will provide. Well, in the 00:20:11.72\00:20:12.69 meantime, he is thinking, he has an impression that 00:20:14.38\00:20:17.98 may be there is many for him waiting at the post office. 00:20:18.01\00:20:21.23 Just an impression that he thought came from the Lord. 00:20:21.26\00:20:24.28 So he goes down to the post office and asked if 00:20:24.31\00:20:27.16 there is mail and yes, there was a lot of from him. 00:20:27.19\00:20:29.79 But in those days you didn't have to pay a postage 00:20:29.82\00:20:32.46 you could pay it, 00:20:32.49\00:20:33.46 if you wanted or you could leave the postage off and 00:20:33.47\00:20:35.50 then the person who received the letter had to pay 00:20:35.53\00:20:37.32 the postage. So, he discovers that there is, the postage 00:20:37.35\00:20:41.32 has not been paid and he said to the post master, 00:20:41.35\00:20:43.50 well, I can't take the letter because I don't have any money 00:20:43.53\00:20:46.01 pay for it and I'm sure the post master just thought, 00:20:46.04\00:20:48.13 well he just left his money at home. I'm sure he didn't 00:20:48.16\00:20:49.89 realize because absolutely broke and he says no, just 00:20:49.92\00:20:53.67 take it, you can pay me next time you come in, but Joseph 00:20:53.70\00:20:56.07 Bates didn't want to go into debt and so he said, no 00:20:56.10\00:20:58.99 I tell you what? You open the letter and if there is 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.57 any money in it then you can take out the postage. 00:21:01.60\00:21:03.71 So, the post master opens the letter and sure enough 00:21:03.74\00:21:07.25 and here is $10. Which was a lot money 00:21:07.28\00:21:09.62 back then. Absolutely, a lot of money. 00:21:09.65\00:21:11.76 And so they took out the postage and Mr. Bates, thinks 00:21:11.79\00:21:16.54 I think I'll surprise my wife. 00:21:16.57\00:21:18.07 So, he goes back to the store and he orders all these, 00:21:18.10\00:21:20.56 this time a whole barrel of flower, a big bag of potatoes 00:21:20.59\00:21:23.70 and some sugar and you know all kinds of staples. 00:21:23.73\00:21:26.05 And he must had quite a sense of humor because he said, 00:21:26.08\00:21:29.08 to the delivery boy, he said, now you just take it to 00:21:29.11\00:21:31.70 my house and put it on the porch 00:21:31.73\00:21:33.33 and my wife is going to come with a answer 00:21:33.36\00:21:34.99 it doesn't belong to us but you 00:21:35.02\00:21:35.99 just put it there anyway. And then he 00:21:36.00\00:21:38.04 slid back into his study to keep writing on his 00:21:38.07\00:21:40.18 Sabbath document. So the, delivery man comes to the 00:21:40.21\00:21:43.33 door and the wife says, Oh! no, you know, 00:21:43.36\00:21:46.09 we don't do this. This is 00:21:46.12\00:21:47.09 not ours, we didn't pay for it, you know, 00:21:47.10\00:21:48.60 and she just can't imagine why 00:21:48.63\00:21:50.92 he leaves the stuff there and 00:21:50.95\00:21:52.75 she comes back to tell Joseph, you know, her husband look 00:21:52.78\00:21:55.86 at, look at all these stuff and she says 00:21:55.89\00:21:58.39 where did it come from? And he got a twinkle his eyes 00:21:58.42\00:22:01.15 and he said, well you know I told you, the Lord will 00:22:01.18\00:22:02.99 provide. Amen. So then he 00:22:03.02\00:22:05.17 told her the story of this, what seemed 00:22:05.20\00:22:07.57 to him to be a miracle that God had provided for their 00:22:07.60\00:22:10.71 needs and she too was a kind of ashamed of her lack of 00:22:10.74\00:22:13.96 faith and realized that, yes, God was going to give them 00:22:13.99\00:22:17.85 the courage and the faith and afford to keep pressing 00:22:17.88\00:22:20.92 on to carry out this mission that they believe that God 00:22:20.95\00:22:24.18 had given to them. And so Joseph Bates wrote the rest 00:22:24.21\00:22:28.23 of that tract he printed it, he published it and sent out a 00:22:29.42\00:22:31.97 thousand of copies of it on money that was sent to him from 00:22:32.00\00:22:35.23 various sources miraculously and that tract came into 00:22:35.26\00:22:40.95 the hands of Ellen and James White. And at first 00:22:40.98\00:22:44.52 they kind of resisted Oh! You know, how can this be, 00:22:44.55\00:22:47.13 you know, we have kept Sunday all of our 00:22:47.16\00:22:49.08 life. It's easy for anyone to resist truth that is contrary 00:22:49.11\00:22:55.67 to your foundational believe system. It's very 00:22:55.70\00:23:00.11 difficult because not growing up an Adventist. 00:23:00.14\00:23:02.39 I went through, of course the Lord was the one who 00:23:02.42\00:23:04.69 took me into a deep study. 00:23:04.72\00:23:06.09 It wasn't someone else trying to teach me but it was 00:23:06.12\00:23:09.07 something that, you know, when you have these pivotal 00:23:09.10\00:23:13.67 believes, it's like, Wow! These pillars I should say 00:23:13.70\00:23:17.34 believes. And somebody comes along says know what you've 00:23:17.37\00:23:20.78 known in recognize this truth all your life is not truth. 00:23:20.81\00:23:24.64 That's a difficult thing. You have to be really open to 00:23:24.67\00:23:27.54 the Holy Spirit. Absolutely. Because otherwise, 00:23:27.57\00:23:29.68 it's kind of, well, what did my grandparents do and 00:23:29.71\00:23:32.93 my great-grandparents. I know that when my father 00:23:32.96\00:23:35.41 became a Seventh-day Adventist there were no Seventh-day 00:23:35.44\00:23:37.82 Adventist in his entire family, none whatsoever. And his 00:23:37.85\00:23:41.37 father came to my dad and said, you know, you are 00:23:41.40\00:23:44.72 going to give up the religion of our ancestors because that 00:23:44.75\00:23:47.96 religion had gone back you know for many generations. 00:23:47.99\00:23:51.84 And my dad said, I am building on what I have 00:23:51.87\00:23:55.37 learnt as a child. Amen. Amen. And ultimately 00:23:55.40\00:23:58.59 his father acknowledged to my dad that yes, 00:23:58.62\00:24:00.93 I can see that the Seventh-day is the 00:24:00.96\00:24:03.22 Sabbath. We do acknowledge with that. 00:24:03.25\00:24:04.67 So, go ahead. I'm sorry didn't mean 00:24:04.70\00:24:05.92 to interrupt, but Joseph. Joseph Bates 00:24:05.95\00:24:08.22 wrote that article that that little booklet that he 00:24:08.25\00:24:10.71 distributed widely. Ellen and James White read 00:24:10.74\00:24:13.95 that pamphlet. They weren't quite sure about it. 00:24:13.98\00:24:17.15 Joseph Bates came up and studied with him and as 00:24:17.18\00:24:19.84 they studied it together and looked at those beautiful text 00:24:19.87\00:24:24.33 that commemorate the Sabbath throughout scripture. 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.75 And they saw that there was no injunctions to keep the 00:24:26.78\00:24:29.53 first day of the week. They too decided to become 00:24:29.56\00:24:32.57 Seventh-day Sabbath keepers. And they ended up founding 00:24:32.60\00:24:35.60 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. So it was Ellen White, 00:24:35.63\00:24:38.21 her husband James White and Joseph Bates, who were 00:24:38.24\00:24:41.45 the founders of our Seventh-day Adventist. 00:24:41.48\00:24:43.36 I love it. I think that's one of my favorite stories, 00:24:43.39\00:24:45.87 but you know, I just want to show one scripture with 00:24:45.90\00:24:48.09 our viewers because this is the scripture that's one of 00:24:48.12\00:24:50.82 my favorites about the Sabbath that he says, truly 00:24:50.85\00:24:56.70 you shall keep my Sabbath. This is Exodus 31:13. For it 00:24:56.73\00:25:01.30 is the sign between you and me that I the Lord your God 00:25:01.33\00:25:08.01 sanctify you. And you know, to be sanctified is to be 00:25:08.04\00:25:13.00 made Holy and I think a lot of us try to make our own 00:25:13.03\00:25:16.88 selves Holy. And we forget the Jeremiah 13:23 says, we can 00:25:16.91\00:25:20.42 change ourselves any more than Ethiopian can change the spots 00:25:20.45\00:25:23.58 over his skin or lipid change spots. And for me 00:25:23.61\00:25:27.37 coming into the truth about the Sabbath in the first time 00:25:27.40\00:25:30.69 I celebrated the Sabbath. This was that entering that 00:25:30.72\00:25:34.21 rest of really acknowledging, yes, Lord you're working in 00:25:34.24\00:25:38.02 me and willing to act according to your good 00:25:38.05\00:25:39.70 pleasure. It's you that you're gonna 00:25:39.73\00:25:42.92 scantify me. It's by your power that I'm kept. 00:25:42.95\00:25:46.10 It was such a beautiful thing to learn this. 00:25:46.13\00:25:48.66 And I've just loved that story and you know, 00:25:48.69\00:25:51.14 our keeping the Sabbath is not some means of legalism or 00:25:51.17\00:25:54.83 works righteousness. No. It's a response to the 00:25:54.86\00:25:57.27 wonderful grace of Jesus in saving us. And when 00:25:57.30\00:26:00.16 he says, if you love me. In John 14:15, keep my 00:26:00.19\00:26:02.88 commandments and we so eager to do that because he 00:26:02.91\00:26:05.76 has done everything for us and we want to follow his 00:26:05.79\00:26:08.70 in his foot steps. We want to do what he did. 00:26:08.73\00:26:10.24 It's kind a like when Pual told in Galatians 3:3, 00:26:10.27\00:26:13.97 where he said, You foolish, Galatians having begun in 00:26:14.00\00:26:16.88 this spirit or you now trying to justify yourself by works 00:26:16.91\00:26:21.32 of the foolish. Well, if all Christians are honest, 00:26:21.35\00:26:24.35 we kind of get into the demure, sometimes 00:26:24.38\00:26:27.08 and feel like we need to do 00:26:27.11\00:26:28.08 more for God, do more for God. And praise 00:26:28.09\00:26:30.51 the Lord the Sabbath is that set apart that when 00:26:30.54\00:26:34.35 you really are celebrating the Sabbath for the purposes 00:26:34.38\00:26:36.78 for which God setted apart that's what gives you that 00:26:36.81\00:26:41.21 aha, moment again reminding mind yourself and totally 00:26:41.24\00:26:45.01 depended upon the Lord my God. Yes, yes. And you know 00:26:45.04\00:26:49.35 I also think about I can not tell a lie. I have a workaholic 00:26:49.38\00:26:52.95 I try my best not to be, but if you were not 00:26:52.98\00:26:55.88 for the Sabbath and knowing that I, God gives me 00:26:55.91\00:26:59.01 permission to have that day off just, yes, to 00:26:59.04\00:27:00.71 celebrate my relationship with him. 00:27:00.74\00:27:02.33 I think worked myself right into it. So even says, 00:27:02.36\00:27:05.94 logically the Sabbath of benefit. One day and seven, 00:27:05.97\00:27:08.85 you just concentrate on a relationship with Jesus. 00:27:08.88\00:27:11.14 I think one think that I appreciate so much about 00:27:11.17\00:27:13.81 the Joseph Bates story is, his wife and you know, 00:27:13.84\00:27:17.02 it's so easy when you know, you got your last penny here. 00:27:17.05\00:27:21.78 You do spin it to think how I am going to do it, into help 00:27:21.81\00:27:24.79 somebody that whose faith is stronger at the moment 00:27:24.82\00:27:27.42 say that the Lord will provide it's so easy to 00:27:27.45\00:27:29.55 think how, but he always does. Amen. 00:27:29.58\00:27:32.84 Cindy we are already out of time. 00:27:32.87\00:27:33.99 You are a great storyteller. 00:27:34.02\00:27:35.18 I can tell you used to ministering the children but 00:27:35.21\00:27:38.16 that energy is so wonderful. Thank you so much again 00:27:38.19\00:27:41.17 for begin here. It's my pleasure. 00:27:41.20\00:27:42.81 We appreciate you will come back. Absolutely. 00:27:42.84\00:27:45.29 Oh! Wonderful. For those you at home I hope that 00:27:45.32\00:27:48.58 you've enjoyed this Adventist Heritage stories 00:27:48.61\00:27:51.26 and she has got more. We are going to have to tell 00:27:51.29\00:27:53.44 have her work that was into the other programs 00:27:53.47\00:27:55.76 here because it's so wonderful 00:27:55.79\00:27:57.86 to see the way in which we led and to 00:27:57.89\00:28:00.80 follow that highway. Now may the grace of 00:28:00.83\00:28:03.77 our Lord Jesus Christ, the loving the father at 00:28:03.80\00:28:06.20 the fellowship of the Holy Spirit 00:28:06.23\00:28:07.86 be with you today and always. Good Bye. 00:28:07.89\00:28:10.92
