Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn 00:00:30.36\00:00:31.42 and welcome again to Issues and Answers. 00:00:31.45\00:00:33.71 No matter where you are around the world 00:00:33.74\00:00:36.03 we're so glad that you're tuning in 00:00:36.06\00:00:38.05 and I know you're going to be glad 00:00:38.08\00:00:39.62 that you caught this program because today 00:00:39.65\00:00:42.08 we are going to be talking about salvation. 00:00:42.11\00:00:45.20 The simplicity of salvation. 00:00:45.23\00:00:48.19 The Bible says-- actually these are Jesus words 00:00:48.22\00:00:51.19 that are recorded in the Bible and John 3:16. 00:00:51.22\00:00:54.02 He said, "For God so loved the world 00:00:54.05\00:00:56.71 that He gave his only begotten Son, 00:00:56.74\00:00:58.87 that whosoever would believe in him should not perish, 00:00:58.90\00:01:02.50 but have everlasting life." 00:01:02.53\00:01:04.90 You know, that is such a great promise 00:01:04.93\00:01:07.32 and sometimes we have a tendency to believe it up here 00:01:07.35\00:01:12.99 but we can't believe it down here. 00:01:13.02\00:01:15.69 God wants all men to be saved 00:01:15.72\00:01:18.40 and He wants us to learn to turn to Him in simple trust. 00:01:18.43\00:01:22.54 And here today to share a lifetime of learning, 00:01:22.57\00:01:26.48 a lifetime of experience with us 00:01:26.51\00:01:29.24 is Pastor Philip Dunham from Salem, Oregon. 00:01:29.27\00:01:32.78 Philip, we're so glad and I should call you 00:01:32.81\00:01:35.37 Pastor Dunham out of respect. 00:01:35.40\00:01:38.13 That's all right. 00:01:38.16\00:01:39.44 Well, we're just so glad that you have joined us today. 00:01:39.47\00:01:43.00 You were a conference pastor for many years. 00:01:43.03\00:01:46.58 You have been retired for 18 years. Yes. 00:01:46.61\00:01:50.58 That's retired as a fulltime employee 00:01:50.61\00:01:52.45 of the Seventh-day Adventist Conference 00:01:52.48\00:01:55.25 but tell me you were still fully employed 00:01:55.28\00:01:59.02 by the Lord, are you not? 00:01:59.05\00:02:00.70 Well, Shelley, in these 18 years 00:02:00.73\00:02:02.93 I have done 14 interim pastorates. 00:02:02.96\00:02:06.29 I have written two books 00:02:06.32\00:02:08.34 and countless numbers of seminars 00:02:08.37\00:02:11.54 and camp meetings and other speaking appointments. 00:02:11.57\00:02:14.69 Well, we're thrilled that you're here. 00:02:14.72\00:02:17.16 And I want to get to a very personal question first. 00:02:17.19\00:02:20.73 You have written two books? Yeah. 00:02:20.76\00:02:22.71 The first was, "Blinded by the Light." Yeah. 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.06 The second was "Sure Salvation." Yeah. 00:02:25.09\00:02:27.76 What was it in your heart or in your mind 00:02:27.79\00:02:31.84 that got you to the point-- 00:02:31.87\00:02:33.49 when did you recognize the simplicity of salvation, 00:02:33.52\00:02:36.77 the assurance of salvation that you could have. 00:02:36.80\00:02:38.70 Where you very young and have you preached 00:02:38.73\00:02:41.23 this all your life or was this something 00:02:41.26\00:02:42.93 that as you grew older and matured in the Lord 00:02:42.96\00:02:46.12 you recognized it's a whole lot simpler than what you thought? 00:02:46.15\00:02:49.37 Shelley, this is hard for me to say 00:02:49.40\00:02:51.42 because it was about halfway through my ministry. 00:02:51.45\00:02:56.15 I talked about Jesus, I lead people to Jesus, 00:02:56.18\00:03:00.05 I shared righteousness by faith. 00:03:00.08\00:03:02.73 But about halfway through my ministry 00:03:02.76\00:03:05.84 the Lord really helped me to understand the simplicity, 00:03:05.87\00:03:09.74 the beauty of salvation. 00:03:09.77\00:03:12.34 So that it just fueled me 00:03:12.37\00:03:14.88 and it's been over flowing me ever since. 00:03:14.91\00:03:18.12 As soon as I met you Pastor Dunham 00:03:18.15\00:03:20.32 I knew that you had assurance of salvation 00:03:20.35\00:03:23.14 and peace in you heart. 00:03:23.17\00:03:24.42 Before, I even knew who were because, 00:03:24.45\00:03:26.40 it just radiates from your face. 00:03:26.43\00:03:28.78 When you learn that halfway through your ministry 00:03:28.81\00:03:31.38 and its nothing to be ashamed of because I've met pastors 00:03:31.41\00:03:34.80 who have said it wasn't toward the end of their ministry 00:03:34.83\00:03:37.82 that they really recognize 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.18 that because sometimes theologians 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.16 can make this is a complicated topic. 00:03:41.19\00:03:44.03 Yes. But when you learn that it was a life changing for you? 00:03:44.06\00:03:48.29 It was life changing, Shelley. 00:03:48.32\00:03:50.67 Do you know that when I went home 00:03:50.70\00:03:52.32 from a week long seminar and I was preaching 00:03:52.35\00:03:55.92 to my congregation of the thousand people-- 00:03:55.95\00:03:58.67 we had two different services on the Sabbath morning 00:03:58.70\00:04:02.81 and people began to say, " 00:04:02.84\00:04:05.00 Pastor I don't know what had happened to you? 00:04:05.03\00:04:08.37 But keep it up." Glory to God. 00:04:08.40\00:04:11.25 And my wife said "Honey I would like to find 00:04:11.28\00:04:16.75 what you've found." Oh, wonderful. 00:04:16.78\00:04:19.04 And you know really it's-- it could have been 00:04:19.07\00:04:22.22 I would like to find who you found. Amen. 00:04:22.25\00:04:25.83 I believe I knew Jesus before, 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.66 I believe I was converted 00:04:27.69\00:04:29.54 but somehow there is kind of epiphany 00:04:29.57\00:04:32.28 and you would see something more clearly and I did. 00:04:32.31\00:04:36.30 And it's blessed my heart ever since. 00:04:36.33\00:04:39.39 And that's one of the reasons 00:04:39.42\00:04:40.53 I wrote the book "Sure Salvation." 00:04:40.56\00:04:42.71 Because, when I get blessed I like to pass the blessing. 00:04:42.74\00:04:45.70 Amen. To be a channel of blessing. 00:04:45.73\00:04:48.20 Yes. Amen. 00:04:48.23\00:04:49.62 Why is it that sometimes theologians 00:04:49.65\00:04:53.27 can make it seems so convoluted. 00:04:53.30\00:04:55.10 I grew up Pastor Philip, not knowing the true gospel. 00:04:55.13\00:05:01.50 I had a love affair with Jesus Christ. 00:05:01.53\00:05:04.66 But the denomination in which I was reared 00:05:04.69\00:05:08.64 thought that you had to be perfect to be loved by God, 00:05:08.67\00:05:12.47 the Father and so I was so fearful of the Lord 00:05:12.50\00:05:15.48 God the Father it took me nearly 40 years 00:05:15.51\00:05:20.31 to get to that point where I was set free to understand. 00:05:20.34\00:05:23.98 Sometime Shelley, 00:05:24.01\00:05:25.16 theologians have a way of confusing us. 00:05:25.19\00:05:29.43 And let me illustrate that. 00:05:29.46\00:05:32.25 "Or do you really have a grasp of soteriology 00:05:32.28\00:05:35.37 and stereological terminology such as justification, 00:05:35.40\00:05:39.89 sanctification, regeneration, forensic 00:05:39.92\00:05:43.68 righteousness, extrinsic righteousness 00:05:43.71\00:05:47.26 predestination, and election? 00:05:47.29\00:05:50.01 Schleiermacher elects all men subjectively, 00:05:50.04\00:05:54.21 Lutherans all men objectively, 00:05:54.24\00:05:57.55 Armenians all believers and Augustinians 00:05:57.58\00:06:02.05 all foreknown is God own. 00:06:02.08\00:06:04.62 Regarding the application of redemption, 00:06:04.65\00:06:07.47 Martineau says that simultaneity doesn't exclude duration 00:06:07.50\00:06:14.30 since each cause has duration 00:06:14.33\00:06:16.86 and each effect also has duration. 00:06:16.89\00:06:19.93 Right?" What did you just saying? 00:06:19.96\00:06:21.57 I don't understand the word of what you just said. 00:06:21.60\00:06:23.06 Isn't it just amazing? Yeah. 00:06:23.09\00:06:24.81 Now that's a quote from someone's-- 00:06:24.84\00:06:26.98 That's a quote from some theological jargon. 00:06:27.01\00:06:31.28 Some theological gobbledygook. 00:06:31.31\00:06:34.45 That's a good word. About salvation. 00:06:34.48\00:06:36.62 And then Shelley, 00:06:36.65\00:06:37.98 there is the text that you quoted at the beginning. 00:06:38.01\00:06:40.64 John 3:16. Yes. 00:06:40.67\00:06:42.86 "For God so loved the world, 00:06:42.89\00:06:44.92 that he gave his only begotten Son, 00:06:44.95\00:06:46.94 that whosoever believes in him 00:06:46.97\00:06:49.53 should not perish, but have everlasting life." 00:06:49.56\00:06:54.02 And I think I can relate to that text 00:06:54.05\00:06:57.26 better than the theological musings. 00:06:57.29\00:07:01.98 And it gets you know-- 00:07:02.01\00:07:03.04 as they pontificate on all of these things-- 00:07:03.07\00:07:05.35 That's the word. 00:07:05.38\00:07:06.41 Sometime the sophistries that gets so sophisticated 00:07:06.44\00:07:08.94 and it makes people look important and intelligent. Yes. 00:07:08.97\00:07:11.98 But they can loose the true meaning of the gospel. 00:07:12.01\00:07:15.29 Contrast that for us then if how would you present it 00:07:15.32\00:07:19.12 if you if I were not a Christian 00:07:19.15\00:07:21.68 and you were trying to tell me 00:07:21.71\00:07:23.82 how I could be saved what would you say to me? 00:07:23.85\00:07:26.81 Well, I want to share that a little more in detail 00:07:26.84\00:07:31.39 but I wanted to mention too 00:07:31.42\00:07:33.46 that one pastor had 600 outlines on John 3:16. 00:07:33.49\00:07:39.38 Oh, mercy. Can you imagine that. 00:07:39.41\00:07:41.43 Mercy. You speak 600 outlines, sermons on John 3:16 00:07:41.46\00:07:47.97 and you know what he said. 00:07:48.00\00:07:49.64 If all the bile were destroyed expect John 3:16 anyone, 00:07:49.67\00:07:55.83 anywhere could be saved 00:07:55.86\00:07:58.52 by believing this of quoted and cherished verse. 00:07:58.55\00:08:01.81 Amen. Isn't that interesting? 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.84 Yes. And then one inspired writer said this. 00:08:03.87\00:08:09.28 For the terms of salvation are here 00:08:09.31\00:08:12.03 laid out indistinct lines 00:08:12.06\00:08:14.95 if one had no other text in the Bible 00:08:14.98\00:08:19.10 this alone would be a guide for the soul. 00:08:19.13\00:08:22.03 Amen. Isn't that beautiful and simple? 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.04 In other words if you had a Bible 00:08:25.07\00:08:27.81 and it only had two covers and one page 00:08:27.84\00:08:31.41 and on the one page one text John 3:16 00:08:31.44\00:08:35.61 that would be enough for salvation. 00:08:35.64\00:08:38.55 Absolutely. I can relate to that, Shelley. 00:08:38.58\00:08:41.10 Absolutely. Now how would you then tell me if you met me? 00:08:41.13\00:08:46.88 Let's say that you and I were on airplane together 00:08:46.91\00:08:49.72 and I found out that you're a pastor 00:08:49.75\00:08:52.80 and I asked you Pastor Phil, I don't-- 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.63 if I told you I don't know 00:08:56.66\00:08:57.72 that I really believe in salvation. 00:08:57.75\00:09:01.41 I believe there is a God 00:09:01.44\00:09:02.66 but I don't know that I'm saved. 00:09:02.69\00:09:04.50 What would you say to me? 00:09:04.53\00:09:05.77 You know, what I have used 00:09:05.80\00:09:06.83 in the past this little pamphlet. 00:09:06.86\00:09:11.01 Okay. It's out of print now but you can get them 00:09:11.04\00:09:14.35 from different places and in Christian bookstores 00:09:14.38\00:09:17.30 it would be called the 'Four Spiritual Loves.' 00:09:17.33\00:09:20.44 All right. But another gentleman and I have made this 00:09:20.47\00:09:23.97 and we have printed a half a million copies of these 00:09:24.00\00:09:26.53 and I would have shared the four simple steps 00:09:26.56\00:09:30.94 that are in the pamphlet. 00:09:30.97\00:09:32.66 God loves you and He has a special plan for your life. 00:09:32.69\00:09:37.23 All of us are separated from God by sin. 00:09:37.26\00:09:40.86 Christ has bridged the gap between man and God 00:09:40.89\00:09:45.89 and then we must receive Christ as a personal Savior. 00:09:45.92\00:09:50.49 Amen. So those are the steps 00:09:50.52\00:09:52.20 and then I would invite a person to accept Christ. 00:09:52.23\00:09:57.44 And in this little pamphlet there was a place 00:09:57.47\00:10:00.71 that mentioned two-hearts. 00:10:00.74\00:10:04.78 And one was a simple heart 00:10:04.81\00:10:08.65 and one was the Christ filled heart. 00:10:08.68\00:10:11.23 And I would ask the person 00:10:11.26\00:10:12.96 which heart do you think represents your life. 00:10:12.99\00:10:16.03 Whose is in control is what you say? 00:10:16.06\00:10:17.12 Whose is in control? 00:10:17.15\00:10:18.27 Who is on the throne of your heart? 00:10:18.30\00:10:19.36 Who is in the throne of your heart? 00:10:19.39\00:10:20.70 Amen. Absolutely yes. 00:10:20.73\00:10:23.00 And so if a person shows then there was a simple prayer 00:10:23.03\00:10:27.12 that they could pray to ask Christ to come into their life. 00:10:27.15\00:10:30.98 So that's bottom-line salvation. 00:10:31.01\00:10:32.79 That's a bottom-line salvation. 00:10:32.82\00:10:35.21 And do you know there is writer 00:10:35.24\00:10:38.49 that I appreciate so much in the book 00:10:38.52\00:10:41.52 that I appreciate so much it's called, Desire of Ages. 00:10:41.55\00:10:45.32 And it says "It is when Christ is received as a personal Savior 00:10:45.35\00:10:51.40 that salvation comes to the soul." 00:10:51.43\00:10:54.93 One sentence, "When Christ is received 00:10:54.96\00:10:59.55 as a personal Savior salvation comes to the soul." 00:10:59.58\00:11:04.48 And that involves in it the recognition 00:11:04.51\00:11:07.56 of needing a Savior doesn't it? 00:11:07.59\00:11:09.30 Oh, yes. 00:11:09.33\00:11:10.37 Because that kind of brings in that repentance idea that-- 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.94 Conviction. Conviction of your sin. 00:11:13.97\00:11:16.38 Yes. And then when you understand 00:11:16.41\00:11:18.11 that you need a Savior 00:11:18.14\00:11:19.17 and you just said reach out to Him. 00:11:19.20\00:11:21.10 Say Lord, I need you. 00:11:21.13\00:11:23.06 I can't change myself so help me. 00:11:23.09\00:11:26.24 That's when He comes in. 00:11:26.27\00:11:28.07 And He will hear that cry. I know. 00:11:28.10\00:11:30.28 And never failing like He will hear that request. Amen. 00:11:30.31\00:11:35.49 You know, when we are talking about 00:11:35.52\00:11:37.28 the simplicity of salvation 00:11:37.31\00:11:40.03 I remember the thief on the cross. Yes. 00:11:40.06\00:11:43.04 And do you know that is such-- 00:11:43.07\00:11:45.47 I'm so glad God put that in His word 00:11:45.50\00:11:49.09 because we're looking in Luke 23:42, 43 00:11:49.12\00:11:54.74 about a dying thief and a dying Savior. 00:11:54.77\00:11:59.66 And this really underscores the simplicity of salvation. 00:11:59.69\00:12:04.84 Because, do you know that there was a 22 word 00:12:04.87\00:12:09.09 exchange between the thief and the Savior. 00:12:09.12\00:12:12.41 Isn't that amazing? 00:12:12.44\00:12:13.47 Depending on which translation you have. 00:12:13.50\00:12:16.26 Lord, remember me when You come in Your kingdom." 00:12:17.82\00:12:21.11 And He told him "I want you to tell you today 00:12:21.14\00:12:24.68 you're gonna be with me in my kingdom." 00:12:24.71\00:12:27.40 22 words, you know not 40 Bible studies. 00:12:27.43\00:12:31.62 Not long weeks of preparation. 00:12:31.65\00:12:34.73 And what did the thief have? 00:12:34.76\00:12:36.97 He had salvation. 00:12:37.00\00:12:39.80 Well, how can you go from a perfect flop 00:12:39.83\00:12:43.07 to a perfect man, a perfect mess 00:12:43.10\00:12:46.52 to just plain perfect in ten seconds? 00:12:46.55\00:12:50.02 Accepting the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:12:50.05\00:12:51.42 Accepting the Lord Jesus Christ and it's beautiful. 00:12:51.45\00:12:55.06 So he went from ranch to redeem. 00:12:55.09\00:12:58.79 From lost to saved, in that short time. 00:12:58.82\00:13:02.86 Well, I bet you can really 00:13:02.89\00:13:04.65 if you have got time to do seminars 00:13:04.68\00:13:06.43 and camp meetings I bet you can preach this, can't you? 00:13:06.46\00:13:10.01 This is message that preaches. 00:13:10.04\00:13:11.87 There was a preacher who would say 00:13:11.90\00:13:14.32 about a certain text, that preached. 00:13:14.35\00:13:16.97 Yeah, amen. And this would preach. 00:13:17.00\00:13:19.92 And that's what when Jesus said 00:13:19.95\00:13:22.59 that we were to go out and make disciples. 00:13:22.62\00:13:26.34 You know, He was saying, go teach them the things 00:13:26.37\00:13:28.83 that I've told you but it begins 00:13:28.86\00:13:31.33 with the good news of the gospel. Amen. 00:13:31.36\00:13:34.12 That God doesn't expect you to change things on your own. 00:13:34.15\00:13:38.58 He knows how powerless you are over sin 00:13:38.61\00:13:41.13 but He sent His Son Jesus Christ. 00:13:41.16\00:13:43.93 That you, He that Jesus might bright their bondage of sin 00:13:43.96\00:13:48.57 and that you can come in to the family of God 00:13:48.60\00:13:52.33 and learn to be dependent upon God to do these things in you. 00:13:52.36\00:13:55.88 Yes. Isn't that beautiful? 00:13:55.91\00:13:58.07 Do you know Shelley, 00:13:58.10\00:13:59.20 I have been so impressed as I've studied the word. 00:13:59.23\00:14:04.00 You know, people talk about well, 00:14:04.03\00:14:06.99 what about battle in the merge? 00:14:07.02\00:14:09.04 What about climbing the spiritual ladder? 00:14:09.07\00:14:11.79 What about living up to all the light that we have? 00:14:11.82\00:14:14.19 Living up to all the light. 00:14:14.22\00:14:15.78 What about sinless perfection sanctifying ourselves 00:14:15.81\00:14:20.36 and reaching the goal of godliness and godlikeness? 00:14:20.39\00:14:24.31 Do you know, let me share something right now with you. 00:14:24.34\00:14:27.76 "Salvation is a gift" Ephesians 2:8. Exactly. 00:14:27.79\00:14:32.12 "Christ himself is a gift." Exactly. 00:14:32.15\00:14:35.05 2 Corinthians 9:15 "Justification is a gift." 00:14:35.08\00:14:39.96 Exactly. Romans 5 "Sanctification is a gift." 00:14:39.99\00:14:44.70 1 Corinthians 1:30 "Repentance is a gift." 00:14:44.73\00:14:48.93 Is a gift. Acts 4:30. 00:14:48.96\00:14:50.45 "Faith is a gift." Amen. 00:14:50.48\00:14:52.66 Romans 12 "The Holy Spirit is a gift and grace is a gift. 00:14:52.69\00:14:59.96 And forgiveness is a gift." Amen. 00:14:59.99\00:15:02.89 Acts 5:31 "Victory over sin is a gift. 00:15:02.92\00:15:08.45 A new heart is a gift." 00:15:08.48\00:15:11.19 I've a text for everyone of these. I know. 00:15:11.22\00:15:13.24 "Righteousness is a gift and eternal life is a gift." 00:15:13.27\00:15:18.03 And it's not too hard to accept a gift. 00:15:18.06\00:15:21.17 No, you know what? 00:15:21.20\00:15:22.70 I think sometimes I preached 00:15:22.73\00:15:24.94 that sermon that you just talked. 00:15:24.97\00:15:27.32 I teach that when I go out. 00:15:27.35\00:15:29.09 And just recently I was somewhere 00:15:29.12\00:15:31.19 and as I was teaching these things 00:15:31.22\00:15:33.45 I had a very influential businessman 00:15:33.48\00:15:36.31 who came up to me afterward and you know what he said. 00:15:36.34\00:15:38.77 What? He said, that is too humbling 00:15:38.80\00:15:42.32 to believe that's all true, 00:15:42.35\00:15:43.89 that all I have to do is sit back and receive. 00:15:43.92\00:15:47.09 And I--the Lord put a holy boldness in my heart. 00:15:47.12\00:15:50.36 Normally, I'm pretty sensitive 00:15:50.39\00:15:52.57 and I just looked at him and I have said, 00:15:52.60\00:15:54.51 what was Lucifer's sin? 00:15:54.54\00:15:56.04 What was original sin? And I said it was pride. 00:15:56.07\00:15:58.81 It was when he let this come up in him 00:15:58.84\00:16:02.10 that he thought that he could be like God. 00:16:02.13\00:16:05.53 And I said if you, 00:16:05.56\00:16:07.51 if you're proud God's going to humble you. 00:16:07.54\00:16:11.48 But if you will humble yourself God will exalt you. 00:16:11.51\00:16:14.50 And it's all about learning to receive from the Lord. 00:16:14.53\00:16:18.38 Amen. That's what it's all about. 00:16:18.41\00:16:20.17 Yes. Shelley, I was studying with a Buddhist young lady 00:16:20.20\00:16:25.06 in Kauai when we lived there. 00:16:25.09\00:16:28.54 We had to live in Kauai. 00:16:28.57\00:16:30.72 Yeah, bless your heart that's tough assignment. 00:16:30.75\00:16:33.34 And I didn't follow the normal course 00:16:33.37\00:16:36.75 of studies that I share. 00:16:36.78\00:16:38.52 The first seven studies 00:16:38.55\00:16:40.44 that I studied with them was about Jesus. Amen. 00:16:40.47\00:16:43.80 And when I finished those I said Pauline, 00:16:43.83\00:16:46.99 what does this sound like to you. 00:16:47.02\00:16:49.37 What do you think about Jesus at this point? 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.81 And she said it's too good to be true. 00:16:51.84\00:16:55.46 Yes. And I said I know what it is but it's true. 00:16:55.49\00:16:59.29 Amen. Yes. 00:16:59.32\00:17:00.51 And, you know, you known it 00:17:00.54\00:17:02.15 by personally experiences well, 00:17:02.18\00:17:03.72 because like you it took me many years 00:17:03.75\00:17:07.41 and I had been part time ministry for many years 00:17:07.44\00:17:10.57 and especially on the sanctification part. 00:17:10.60\00:17:13.37 Because, I was working-- 00:17:13.40\00:17:14.84 I use to get hung up on Philippians 2:12 00:17:14.87\00:17:17.53 where there is he said, 00:17:17.56\00:17:18.83 "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." 00:17:18.86\00:17:21.52 Oh, yes. And I wouldn't look at Philippians 2:13 it said, 00:17:21.55\00:17:24.57 it was not in your own strength 00:17:24.60\00:17:26.96 but for its God who works in you to will 00:17:26.99\00:17:29.15 and to act according to His good purpose. 00:17:29.18\00:17:31.69 And what happened to me is that I was so busy 00:17:31.72\00:17:36.12 trying to sanctify myself until this might interest you. 00:17:36.15\00:17:39.46 I don't know if you know this 00:17:39.49\00:17:40.79 but when the Lord took me on a study of the temple-- 00:17:40.82\00:17:44.93 the sanctuary and when the Lord taught me the truth 00:17:44.96\00:17:48.12 about the Ten Commandments 00:17:48.15\00:17:49.32 that they were nailed to the cross. 00:17:49.35\00:17:51.41 And I started studying on the Sabbath. 00:17:51.44\00:17:55.10 It was my first Sabbath that I celebrated. 00:17:55.13\00:17:59.31 That I knew freedom from performance 00:17:59.34\00:18:01.43 that I was totally could receive the grace of God, 00:18:01.46\00:18:05.05 the gift of sanctification. 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.98 Because He says in Exodus 31:13, 00:18:08.01\00:18:10.59 that the Sabbath is the sign for us 00:18:10.62\00:18:13.09 to remember that its God who is sanctifying us. 00:18:13.12\00:18:16.12 Amen. I love that. 00:18:16.15\00:18:17.61 And the New Testament says that Jesus is sanctifying us, 00:18:17.64\00:18:20.72 he says the word sanctifies us the Holy Spirit sanctifies us. 00:18:20.75\00:18:25.89 So all God's asking of us is to cooperate. 00:18:25.92\00:18:28.81 Amen. To believe, to receive, to abide. 00:18:28.84\00:18:33.77 Amen. And what you-- 00:18:33.80\00:18:35.41 That's beautiful what you've just shared 00:18:35.44\00:18:37.33 because what you found was rest. 00:18:37.36\00:18:41.01 Freedom. And that's what the Sabbath is about. 00:18:41.04\00:18:43.15 Yes. And not just physical rest but resting in Jesus Christ. 00:18:43.18\00:18:48.08 For it is God who works in you 00:18:48.11\00:18:50.76 to willing to do of his good pleasure. 00:18:50.79\00:18:52.79 Amen. Now you have a certain parable 00:18:52.82\00:18:58.00 that you've said that you'd like to share with us. 00:18:58.03\00:19:00.28 Yes. That really tells us about the simplicity of salvation. 00:19:00.31\00:19:06.15 Yes. It is so simple but let me share it. 00:19:06.18\00:19:10.77 Yes. "In the city of Chicago one cold dark night 00:19:10.80\00:19:14.17 a blizzard was setting in and little boy was selling 00:19:14.20\00:19:17.16 newspapers on the corner, 00:19:17.19\00:19:19.48 as the people were going in and out of the cold. 00:19:19.51\00:19:22.62 And the little boy was so called he couldn't sell many papers. 00:19:22.65\00:19:26.00 And he walked up to a policemen and he said, 00:19:26.03\00:19:28.24 'Mister, you wouldn't happen to know 00:19:28.27\00:19:30.63 where a poor boy could find a warm place 00:19:30.66\00:19:32.71 to sleep tonight would you? 00:19:32.74\00:19:34.73 You see, I sleep in a box 00:19:34.76\00:19:36.44 up around the corner and down the alley 00:19:36.47\00:19:38.83 and its awful cold in there, to night. 00:19:38.86\00:19:41.08 Sure would be nice to have a warm place to stay.' 00:19:41.11\00:19:44.03 And the policeman looked down at the little boy 00:19:44.06\00:19:46.52 and he said 'You go down the street 00:19:46.55\00:19:49.08 to that big white house and you knock on the door. 00:19:49.11\00:19:52.47 And when they come out the door 00:19:52.50\00:19:54.06 you just say John 3:16 and they will let you in.' 00:19:54.09\00:19:59.82 So he did, he walked up the steps, 00:19:59.85\00:20:03.64 he knocked on the door and a lady answered 00:20:03.67\00:20:05.49 and he looked up and said, 'John 3:16.' 00:20:05.52\00:20:09.65 And lady said, 'Come on in, Son.' 00:20:09.68\00:20:12.05 She took him in sat him down and split bottom rocker 00:20:12.08\00:20:15.62 in front of a great big old fire place and she went off. 00:20:15.65\00:20:18.94 And the boy sat there for a little bit 00:20:18.97\00:20:21.08 and he thought to himself. 00:20:21.11\00:20:22.81 John 3:16. I don't understand it, 00:20:22.84\00:20:26.15 but it sure makes a cold boy warm." Amen. 00:20:26.18\00:20:29.85 "And later she came back and asked him are you hungry? 00:20:29.88\00:20:33.28 And he said, 'Well, just a little. 00:20:33.31\00:20:35.44 I haven't eaten in a couple of days 00:20:35.47\00:20:37.80 and I guess I could stand a little bit of food.' 00:20:37.83\00:20:40.80 Lady took him in the kitchen and sat him down 00:20:40.83\00:20:43.32 to a table full of wonderful food. 00:20:43.35\00:20:46.08 And he ate and he ate until he couldn't eat any more. 00:20:46.11\00:20:49.33 And then he thought to himself 'John 3:16... 00:20:49.36\00:20:53.52 Boy, I sure don't understand it, 00:20:53.55\00:20:55.49 but it sure makes a hungry boy full.' 00:20:55.52\00:20:58.91 And she took him upstairs to a bathroom 00:20:58.94\00:21:01.51 to a huge bathtub filled with warm water 00:21:01.54\00:21:05.23 and sat there and soaked for a while. 00:21:05.26\00:21:07.93 And as he soaked, he thought to himself, 00:21:07.96\00:21:10.14 'John 3:16... I don't understand it, 00:21:10.17\00:21:13.76 but it sure makes a dirty boy clean. 00:21:13.79\00:21:17.18 And the lady came in and got him, 00:21:17.21\00:21:19.33 and took him to a room 00:21:19.36\00:21:20.74 and tucked him into a big old feather bed, 00:21:20.77\00:21:23.20 pulled the covers up around his neck, 00:21:23.23\00:21:25.60 kissed him goodnight and turned out the lights. 00:21:25.63\00:21:29.06 And as he lay in darkness and looked out the window 00:21:29.09\00:21:32.32 at the snow coming down on that 00:21:32.35\00:21:34.03 cold night he thought to himself, 00:21:34.06\00:21:38.00 'John 3:16... I don't understand it, 00:21:38.03\00:21:41.41 but it sure makes a tired boy rested.' 00:21:41.44\00:21:45.33 And the next morning the lady came back up 00:21:45.36\00:21:47.42 and took him down again to that same big table full of food. 00:21:47.45\00:21:51.45 After he ate, she took him back 00:21:51.48\00:21:53.67 to that same big old split bottom rocker 00:21:53.70\00:21:56.75 in front of the fireplace 00:21:56.78\00:21:58.68 and picked up a big old Bible 00:21:58.71\00:22:01.31 and she sat down in front of him 00:22:01.34\00:22:03.38 and looked into his young face. 00:22:03.41\00:22:05.84 'Do you understand John 3:16,' she asked gently? 00:22:05.87\00:22:10.28 He replied, 'No, Ma'am, I don't. 00:22:10.31\00:22:13.21 The first time I ever heard it was last night 00:22:13.24\00:22:15.62 when the policeman told me to say it.' 00:22:15.65\00:22:18.59 And she opened the Bible to John 3:16, 00:22:18.62\00:22:21.38 and began to explain to him about Jesus. 00:22:21.41\00:22:24.37 Right there in front of that big old fireplace, 00:22:24.40\00:22:27.08 he gave his heart and his life to Jesus. 00:22:27.11\00:22:31.39 And he sat there and thought, 'John 3:16. 00:22:31.42\00:22:35.93 I don't understand it, 00:22:35.96\00:22:37.93 but it sure makes a lost boy feel safe.' 00:22:37.96\00:22:41.86 Oh how precious. Isn't that a neat little story? 00:22:41.89\00:22:45.99 How precious and how true 00:22:46.02\00:22:47.63 spiritually that applies just perfectly. 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.35 Yes. You know that's wonderful. 00:22:50.38\00:22:52.22 Can you share some also I know that our viewers 00:22:52.25\00:22:55.72 would love to may be grab a pen and a paper 00:22:55.75\00:22:59.22 and let's look at some scripture promises. 00:22:59.25\00:23:02.04 Some assurance of salvation 00:23:02.07\00:23:03.98 or the simplicity of salvation for-- 00:23:04.01\00:23:09.89 from the Bible for our viewers. 00:23:09.92\00:23:12.49 There so many texts-- Yes. 00:23:12.52\00:23:15.11 And in this book 'Sure Salvation' 00:23:15.14\00:23:17.31 I have included some and called them 00:23:17.34\00:23:19.45 extreme assurances and promises and I love it. 00:23:19.48\00:23:23.48 And I love this and Isaiah 61 00:23:23.51\00:23:25.62 and we don't usually think 00:23:25.65\00:23:26.80 and terms of the Old Testament 00:23:26.83\00:23:29.78 as beautiful things on righteousness 00:23:29.81\00:23:32.81 and salvation but listen. 00:23:32.84\00:23:34.35 There is a lot of it. Oh, there is a lot of it. 00:23:34.38\00:23:36.40 Yes there is. "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, 00:23:36.43\00:23:39.76 my soul shall be joyful in my God, 00:23:39.79\00:23:43.59 for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, 00:23:43.62\00:23:48.27 he has covered me with the robe of righteousness." 00:23:48.30\00:23:52.68 Notice Shelley, he God has cloth me 00:23:52.71\00:23:57.91 with the garments of salvation. 00:23:57.94\00:24:00.56 He has covered me with the robe of righteousness. 00:24:00.59\00:24:04.74 Amen. "As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, 00:24:04.77\00:24:08.11 and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." 00:24:08.14\00:24:11.72 I love it. God cloths us with salvation. 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.69 Some of us are so busy trying to cloth ourself 00:24:15.72\00:24:19.21 and we're missing the point 00:24:19.24\00:24:20.57 because He has told those in Isaiah 64:6 00:24:20.60\00:24:23.28 that you righteousness is about filthy rags before the Lord. 00:24:23.31\00:24:26.69 Yes. It's got to be that we come to Him and let Him 00:24:26.72\00:24:29.94 cloth it with Christ robe of righteousness. 00:24:29.97\00:24:32.01 Yes. You know we tried to make ourselves holy. 00:24:32.04\00:24:37.50 Impossible. It's impossible. 00:24:37.53\00:24:40.20 There is only one being in the universe 00:24:40.23\00:24:44.11 that can make anything or anyone holy. 00:24:44.14\00:24:48.76 And that's God. 00:24:48.79\00:24:49.91 And you know I believe Philip, 00:24:49.94\00:24:51.12 isn't it Hebrew 12:14 regards says, 00:24:51.15\00:24:53.18 "Be holy as I'm holy." 00:24:53.21\00:24:57.19 It is a commandment but He also tells us everywhere 00:24:57.22\00:25:01.58 that anything He commands of us He is gonna do for us. 00:25:01.61\00:25:04.31 Right. And the only way that-- 00:25:04.34\00:25:07.35 I mean there's so many promises on sanctification 00:25:07.38\00:25:09.51 that show us it's all God's work. 00:25:09.54\00:25:11.68 He tells us to make it efforts as he empowers us. 00:25:11.71\00:25:14.31 We need to-- I mean He can't sanctifies 00:25:14.34\00:25:16.48 if we never pick up the book. 00:25:16.51\00:25:18.07 Right. We do make an effort 00:25:18.10\00:25:20.50 but the actual work is something that God doe sin us. 00:25:20.53\00:25:23.76 Amen. "For it is God who works in you 00:25:23.79\00:25:27.16 to will and to do for His good pleasure." 00:25:27.19\00:25:29.94 Exactly. I'm so thankful. 00:25:29.97\00:25:31.31 He is the one that does the work. Amen. 00:25:31.34\00:25:34.24 It's not my sweat and blood Shelley, 00:25:34.27\00:25:38.29 that I'm trusting in. 00:25:38.32\00:25:39.84 It's His bloody sweat that I'm trusting. 00:25:39.87\00:25:44.26 That's really good. That's very vivid. 00:25:44.29\00:25:47.18 Okay share another couple of promises. 00:25:47.21\00:25:49.07 Yes. I love this. 00:25:49.10\00:25:52.27 John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:25:52.30\00:25:57.62 he who hears My word and believes in Him 00:25:57.65\00:26:01.47 who sent Me has everlasting life." 00:26:01.50\00:26:05.58 Amen. So what is? 00:26:05.61\00:26:07.02 That means right here in here now. 00:26:07.05\00:26:09.04 That's it right here now. Right. 00:26:09.07\00:26:10.50 "And shall not come into judgment, 00:26:10.53\00:26:13.25 but has passed from death into life." 00:26:13.28\00:26:17.14 Praise the Lord. I love to read things like that. 00:26:17.17\00:26:19.11 Yeah, always want to keep a balance. 00:26:19.14\00:26:21.47 We're going to have you come back Pastor Phil, 00:26:21.50\00:26:23.87 and do some more programs. 00:26:23.90\00:26:25.26 I just don't want to leave any viewer today with the idea 00:26:25.29\00:26:28.78 that we're talking about once saved always saved. 00:26:28.81\00:26:31.62 We're talking about the simplicity of salvation 00:26:31.65\00:26:34.06 but you don't believe in once saved always save, do you? 00:26:34.09\00:26:37.07 No I don't. Why not. 00:26:37.10\00:26:38.31 I find that it is not taught in the Bible. 00:26:38.34\00:26:41.96 And I could share examples of that but no 00:26:41.99\00:26:48.28 "Not once saved, always saved." 00:26:48.31\00:26:50.04 So God never takes a choice from us. 00:26:50.07\00:26:52.01 There is that opportunity that you can't apostasies, 00:26:52.04\00:26:55.71 divorce yourself from the Lord. 00:26:55.74\00:26:57.71 That's pretty stupid to think 00:26:57.74\00:26:58.79 but we have actually seen examples of that have we not. 00:26:58.82\00:27:01.60 Yes. And there are two extremes, 00:27:01.63\00:27:04.60 eternal security on the one hand 00:27:04.63\00:27:07.17 and infernal insecurity of the other hand. 00:27:07.20\00:27:11.12 And those are polar opposites. 00:27:11.15\00:27:13.66 They are and they're both unbiblical. 00:27:13.69\00:27:16.26 Totally. Yes. 00:27:16.29\00:27:17.53 So we are going to have you come back 00:27:17.56\00:27:20.30 and I'm so glad that you've agreed 00:27:20.33\00:27:21.78 and next time we're gonna actually 00:27:21.81\00:27:23.34 talk about assurance of salvation. 00:27:23.37\00:27:25.79 It's simple but you can also have assurance. 00:27:25.82\00:27:28.74 Thank you so much for being here, Pastor Phil. 00:27:28.77\00:27:31.09 You're welcome. It's been a pleasure. 00:27:31.12\00:27:33.62 For those of you at home don't forget John 3:16, 00:27:33.65\00:27:37.45 "For God so loved you that he gave 00:27:37.48\00:27:39.82 his only begotten Son. 00:27:39.85\00:27:40.88 That if you will believe in Him, 00:27:40.91\00:27:43.62 that you will not perish, but have everlasting life." 00:27:43.65\00:27:46.43 Now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:27:46.46\00:27:49.05 the love of the Father 00:27:49.08\00:27:50.36 and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit 00:27:50.39\00:27:52.35 be with you today and always. 00:27:52.38\00:27:54.63 Thank you. 00:27:54.66\00:27:55.74
