Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn. 00:00:30.03\00:00:31.42 Welcome again to Issues and Answers. 00:00:31.45\00:00:33.41 Today our issue is going to be; How can we work for God? 00:00:33.44\00:00:38.37 And I guarantee you one thing, you're going to find that the 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.26 answer is that the Lord is calling each and every one 00:00:41.29\00:00:44.51 of us to be His hands, and His feet here in the earth. 00:00:44.54\00:00:48.13 And it actually reminds me of the scripture found in 00:00:48.16\00:00:50.69 I John 3:18. 00:00:50.72\00:00:53.69 Listen to what Paul, excuse me, this was John, of course, wrote. 00:00:53.72\00:00:57.87 He said, Little children let us not love merely in theory 00:00:57.90\00:01:03.20 or in speech, but in deed and in truth, in practice 00:01:03.23\00:01:07.74 and in sincerity. 00:01:07.77\00:01:09.28 God is calling us to be His touch in the world. 00:01:09.31\00:01:13.87 And particularly today, we want to focus on the fact that God 00:01:13.90\00:01:18.34 has a call for every woman to ministry. 00:01:18.37\00:01:21.83 With us today is someone who is passionate about 00:01:21.86\00:01:25.19 Women's Ministries is Heather Dawn Small. 00:01:25.22\00:01:28.06 She is the director for the General Conference of 00:01:28.09\00:01:31.35 Seventh-day Adventists Women's Ministry Program. 00:01:31.38\00:01:34.28 Heather, thank you so much for coming back. 00:01:34.31\00:01:36.70 Now tell us about your new theme at the General Conference 00:01:36.73\00:01:40.91 for Women's Ministries. 00:01:40.94\00:01:42.19 Well, at the General Conference there's an over-all theme 00:01:42.22\00:01:44.89 of every department, and that theme is Tell the World. 00:01:44.92\00:01:47.52 Well, of course, when you're dealing with women 00:01:47.55\00:01:50.23 Tell the World just wasn't enough for us because we're 00:01:50.26\00:01:53.84 touchy feely kind of people. 00:01:53.87\00:01:55.31 We want to get in there and really get involved. 00:01:55.34\00:01:58.65 And so I thought about it, and prayed about it, 00:01:58.68\00:02:01.05 and God gave us the theme, Touch A Heart, Tell the World. 00:02:01.06\00:02:04.51 And you've got a beautiful logo. 00:02:04.54\00:02:06.67 Let's look at that. 00:02:06.70\00:02:07.81 Yes, and on the logo you'll see the first slide. 00:02:07.84\00:02:11.44 It has A Ministry for every woman 00:02:11.47\00:02:14.58 Touch a Heart, Tell the World. 00:02:14.61\00:02:16.35 And that's what we're trying to promote, and encourage our 00:02:16.37\00:02:21.35 women that every woman of the church should be involved 00:02:21.38\00:02:24.94 in ministry to somebody in some form or fashion. 00:02:24.97\00:02:29.43 And by doing that we'll be touching hearts, and we'll be 00:02:29.46\00:02:32.46 telling the world. 00:02:32.49\00:02:33.46 Amen, amen! 00:02:33.47\00:02:34.77 How did God lead you to this theme? 00:02:34.80\00:02:37.20 Oh, that was an awesome thing that He did because it started 00:02:37.23\00:02:41.64 about a year before the General Conference session in 2005. 00:02:41.67\00:02:45.97 I remember Ardis Stanbacken who was then the GC 00:02:46.00\00:02:49.24 Women's Ministry director. 00:02:49.27\00:02:50.57 She and I were talking about what our theme could be. 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.18 I can't remember who came up with the idea of, 00:02:53.21\00:02:55.17 A Ministry for Every Woman because at General Conference, 00:02:55.20\00:02:57.94 session we always have our meetings, and we do this 00:02:57.97\00:03:00.28 beautiful backdrop, and so we were thinking, what could we do? 00:03:00.31\00:03:03.60 Then we asked our graphic artist if she would come up with a 00:03:03.63\00:03:08.29 picture which would depict this. 00:03:08.32\00:03:10.57 And she came up with the picture which you just saw with a woman 00:03:10.60\00:03:15.64 holding the globe. 00:03:15.67\00:03:16.85 Well, after the session was over and now I'm here, director, 00:03:16.88\00:03:21.50 and I'm looking at the General Conference theme, 00:03:21.53\00:03:23.40 and I'm sitting in the hall. 00:03:23.43\00:03:25.19 The session wasn't over as yet. 00:03:25.22\00:03:26.59 That's when it started. 00:03:26.62\00:03:27.96 I'm sitting in the hall and I'm thinking, Okay, Lord, what am I 00:03:27.99\00:03:30.57 going to do with this? 00:03:30.58\00:03:31.55 I mean, where do You want me to lead the women of the 00:03:31.56\00:03:35.19 church according to what You want for us? 00:03:35.22\00:03:37.75 Amen. 00:03:37.78\00:03:38.75 And as I began to think about it the first thing that came to my 00:03:38.76\00:03:41.50 mind was Isaiah. 00:03:41.53\00:03:42.65 Isaiah 61:1-3 where the Bible talks about "the Spirit of God 00:03:42.68\00:03:47.42 is upon me. " 00:03:47.45\00:03:50.28 It's the prophecy of Jesus Christ. 00:03:50.31\00:03:53.69 As I read that I realized, but this is what God wants to do. 00:03:53.72\00:03:58.72 He wants us to go out there and proclaim His message, 00:03:58.75\00:04:02.27 but He also wants us to heal people, and to touch people, 00:04:02.30\00:04:06.83 and to be involved where there is pain. 00:04:06.86\00:04:10.10 As I thought about that; that whole idea of touch came in, 00:04:10.13\00:04:14.98 and I thought, Oh, Touch and Tell. 00:04:15.01\00:04:17.95 But then somebody else gave us the idea of Touch a Heart, 00:04:17.98\00:04:22.12 Tell the World, which was even so much better. 00:04:22.15\00:04:24.50 It's beautiful! 00:04:24.53\00:04:25.50 We put it altogether and then I came across a quotation, 00:04:25.51\00:04:29.68 which is on the second slide, from E. G. White's 00:04:29.71\00:04:33.58 Ministry of Healing. 00:04:33.61\00:04:34.72 That's on slide two. 00:04:34.75\00:04:36.64 In it she says: 00:04:36.67\00:04:38.17 As I read that I thought wait a minute; this is not what 00:04:57.72\00:05:01.74 we've really been doing. 00:05:01.77\00:05:02.74 We've been going out there and preaching, and teaching, 00:05:02.75\00:05:05.95 but we really haven't spent time meeting the needs. 00:05:05.98\00:05:09.77 And it's not that as a church we don't do that. 00:05:09.80\00:05:12.51 Yes we do. 00:05:12.54\00:05:13.51 You know we have our Community Services; we have ADRA. 00:05:13.52\00:05:15.32 But it seems as though, to me, we need to bring those together. 00:05:15.35\00:05:19.94 Amen. 00:05:19.97\00:05:20.94 So God gave me this whole vision and this idea that even before 00:05:20.95\00:05:27.02 we do our evangelistic meetings, women must go into the community 00:05:27.03\00:05:30.83 three to six months before, and they must work 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.00 in the community. 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.00 They must visit people's homes. 00:05:35.01\00:05:37.92 They must see what the needs are. 00:05:37.95\00:05:40.10 Meet the needs of the people. 00:05:40.13\00:05:41.55 Then when the pastor, or whoever it is comes, to preach the word, 00:05:41.58\00:05:46.41 people will come because we would have touched their hearts 00:05:46.44\00:05:49.92 with the touch of God. 00:05:49.95\00:05:51.54 They will know that we are really sincere. 00:05:51.57\00:05:53.99 I think that will make a whole big different to the way that we 00:05:54.02\00:05:57.60 go out there and tell the world. 00:05:57.63\00:05:59.16 I think if we just live that in our day-by-day life. 00:05:59.19\00:06:01.71 Yes, definitely. 00:06:01.74\00:06:02.71 You know, when you said that Jesus, and as Ellen White had 00:06:02.72\00:06:06.96 written, that He ministered to their needs, 00:06:06.99\00:06:09.23 then He said, Follow me. 00:06:09.26\00:06:10.45 People don't care how much you know till they know 00:06:10.48\00:06:12.81 how much you care. 00:06:12.84\00:06:13.81 And that's just the scripture we opened up with today. 00:06:13.82\00:06:16.99 That we've got to love, just not in theory and in words, 00:06:17.02\00:06:19.81 but in action and in truth. 00:06:19.84\00:06:21.30 So I do know that when we go out, and if we minister to 00:06:21.33\00:06:25.63 people, just becoming friends with them, helping to meet 00:06:25.66\00:06:29.33 their physical needs, winning their confidence, then they will 00:06:29.36\00:06:33.15 listen to what love drives us, or compels us to do this. 00:06:33.18\00:06:37.92 I know I've said this before, but I think I'll say it again, 00:06:37.95\00:06:41.31 because it's something that we all need to hear. 00:06:41.34\00:06:44.99 People don't want perfect Christians. 00:06:45.02\00:06:47.03 People don't want us to go out there looking all nice, 00:06:47.06\00:06:49.36 and dandy and fine, with our Bibles tucked under our arms. 00:06:49.39\00:06:52.48 And we go out there and we open the word of God, and we preach 00:06:52.51\00:06:55.48 these wonderful sermons. 00:06:55.51\00:06:56.88 The average person out there does not want to hear what 00:06:56.91\00:06:59.68 the word of God says until they have felt the word of God 00:06:59.69\00:07:03.90 in their lives. 00:07:03.93\00:07:04.90 They want to know, "Oh, is this true? 00:07:04.91\00:07:07.83 Well then, tell me what this is done for you. " 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.51 Yes! 00:07:09.54\00:07:10.51 Now, if I can't share with you what God has done for me through 00:07:10.52\00:07:12.56 His word, then why should somebody else listen to it? 00:07:12.59\00:07:15.13 So we've got to change the way that we have been reaching out 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.83 to people's lives. 00:07:18.86\00:07:19.83 We've got to realize that unless somebody needs, unless a person 00:07:19.84\00:07:25.63 who has a suffering; there is a woman who's being abused 00:07:26.01\00:07:30.23 by her husband. 00:07:30.26\00:07:31.40 There's this other woman who doesn't have any money to feed 00:07:31.43\00:07:34.60 her hungry family. 00:07:34.63\00:07:35.60 How can we tell them God's word and expect them to accept it, 00:07:35.61\00:07:40.07 if we do not first meet their need; meet them at the point 00:07:40.08\00:07:44.25 of their pain. 00:07:44.28\00:07:45.25 Amen, amen. 00:07:45.26\00:07:46.47 It's when we do that; that's when ministry really begins. 00:07:46.50\00:07:49.23 And, you know, sometimes that pain, it doesn't have to be 00:07:49.26\00:07:51.48 just physical abuse, sometimes it's a pain of loneliness 00:07:51.51\00:07:54.38 or isolation. 00:07:54.41\00:07:55.38 That's right. 00:07:55.39\00:07:56.36 When we go out and prove ourselves to be friendly, 00:07:56.37\00:07:58.45 and interested in someone; listening, sometimes it's just 00:07:58.48\00:08:01.89 people need someone who will listen to them. 00:08:01.92\00:08:04.26 How do you, as you're taking this message, this theme, 00:08:04.44\00:08:08.38 across the world, and I know how much you travel. 00:08:08.41\00:08:11.59 You're doing what, close to twelve international 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.64 trips a year? 00:08:14.67\00:08:15.64 Ah, I'd say between eight and ten. 00:08:15.65\00:08:17.36 Eight and ten? 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.36 That's amazing, especially when you're gone two weeks at a time. 00:08:18.37\00:08:21.74 Two to three weeks, yeah. 00:08:21.77\00:08:22.74 That is amazing, Heather Dawn. 00:08:22.75\00:08:24.49 But when you go out, and you're teaching women this and say, 00:08:24.52\00:08:28.16 Let's Touch a Heart, and Tell the World, have you ever had 00:08:28.19\00:08:32.78 women who say, Well, I don't know what my gift is? 00:08:32.81\00:08:35.04 I don't know where begin. 00:08:35.07\00:08:37.01 How do you teach them where to begin? 00:08:37.04\00:08:39.38 First thing I ask them what are they passionate about? 00:08:39.41\00:08:41.89 What do they like? 00:08:41.92\00:08:42.89 What do you think you are good at? 00:08:42.90\00:08:45.04 It doesn't matter, tell me something, whether it's baking 00:08:45.07\00:08:48.20 bread or it's doing some kind of art work. 00:08:48.23\00:08:51.77 Whatever it is, that's what God is going to use. 00:08:51.80\00:08:55.27 One of the big crazes that I see here in the United States 00:08:55.30\00:08:58.69 that I've gotten myself caught up in is scrapbooking. 00:08:58.72\00:09:01.41 I love scrapbooking! 00:09:01.44\00:09:02.88 I scrapbook cards all the time because it's become a personal 00:09:02.91\00:09:07.10 ministry for me. 00:09:07.13\00:09:08.10 But somebody who loves scrapbooking can go to a crop 00:09:08.13\00:09:13.64 meet, a group where there are other women meeting to do 00:09:13.67\00:09:16.57 scrapbooking, and share God's word with them as they sit 00:09:16.60\00:09:19.98 and they talk. 00:09:20.01\00:09:20.98 Just talk about what God has done. 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.54 That's ministry! 00:09:23.57\00:09:24.63 I'm using whatever God has put in my hand to reach out 00:09:24.66\00:09:28.60 and to become friends with other people because, you see, 00:09:28.63\00:09:31.78 it's not that I have to go with my Bible. 00:09:31.81\00:09:34.06 I don't have to have a neat set of Bible lessons there. 00:09:34.09\00:09:37.06 No, I don't. 00:09:37.09\00:09:38.06 I just need me, and God with me, speaking through me. 00:09:38.07\00:09:41.42 And so it could be anywhere. 00:09:41.45\00:09:43.64 I could be knitting with my friends in a group. 00:09:43.67\00:09:45.91 I could be painting. 00:09:45.94\00:09:46.91 I could be baking. 00:09:46.92\00:09:47.89 I could be... it doesn't matter what it could be. 00:09:47.90\00:09:49.79 There was one lady who told me once, "Well, I don't know what 00:09:49.82\00:09:54.72 I do well. " 00:09:54.75\00:09:55.72 I said, "Well, think about it. 00:09:55.73\00:09:57.35 What do you enjoy doing?" 00:09:57.38\00:09:58.42 She said, "I love to read. " 00:09:58.45\00:09:59.43 And I said, "Do you read out loud? 00:09:59.46\00:10:00.93 She said, "I love to read out loud. " 00:10:00.96\00:10:02.77 I said, "That's a ministry. 00:10:02.80\00:10:04.12 Can you think of anyone in your community who needs, 00:10:04.15\00:10:07.69 or who would love to have someone come and read the word 00:10:07.72\00:10:10.06 of God for them? 00:10:10.09\00:10:11.06 Or read a book for them? 00:10:11.07\00:10:12.15 Or read the newspaper for them?" 00:10:12.18\00:10:13.67 She thought about it and she said, "Yeah, I guess I can. " 00:10:13.70\00:10:16.20 I said, "Then go and do it. " 00:10:16.23\00:10:18.40 Just take that; take your voice, and let your voice be what God 00:10:18.43\00:10:23.20 will use to touch someone's life. 00:10:23.23\00:10:24.88 Amen. 00:10:24.91\00:10:25.88 When you were talking I was thinking about a precious lady 00:10:25.89\00:10:28.24 in Berkley Springs, West Virginia, who loves to quilt. 00:10:28.27\00:10:31.58 She started a quilting group at her home. 00:10:31.61\00:10:34.12 She had many different denominations available, 00:10:34.15\00:10:37.72 or that were attending this quilting group. 00:10:37.75\00:10:40.78 So then one day she had been introduced to the book 00:10:40.81\00:10:44.02 that I wrote, Exalting His Word, and she had left that 00:10:44.05\00:10:46.41 out and some woman there picked it up and said, "What is this?" 00:10:46.44\00:10:50.00 They all decided, after reading a little bit, that they'd like 00:10:50.03\00:10:52.76 to study that. 00:10:52.79\00:10:53.76 So they started getting together thirty minutes earlier 00:10:53.77\00:10:56.42 than their quilting time, and began this devotional. 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.31 It turned out that, she said that it ended up that they were 00:10:59.34\00:11:03.16 spending just a lot shorter time doing any quilting, 00:11:03.19\00:11:06.15 and more time studying the word. 00:11:06.18\00:11:07.93 So we can reach out and be friends to people. 00:11:07.96\00:11:11.68 That's true. 00:11:11.71\00:11:12.91 One of the things that I've noticed over the years 00:11:12.94\00:11:15.21 in the church is that people in the world think 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.69 Seventh-day Adventist's are strange people. 00:11:17.72\00:11:19.38 Yes! 00:11:19.41\00:11:20.44 We are so "other worldly" so they think. 00:11:20.47\00:11:24.03 You know, they look at us: the way we dress, the food we eat, 00:11:24.06\00:11:26.48 you know, what we do and what we don't do; which is a very 00:11:26.51\00:11:29.37 long list, and they think, Oh Adventists are just strange. 00:11:29.40\00:11:32.74 I grew up in the church hearing "You've got to be in the world 00:11:32.77\00:11:36.47 but not of the world. " 00:11:36.50\00:11:37.53 Separate yourselves. 00:11:37.56\00:11:39.01 And to me what we've done is we've built these nice neat 00:11:39.04\00:11:44.19 little boxes for ourselves called churches, and as long as 00:11:44.22\00:11:47.86 we're inside of this little box called the church we're fine. 00:11:47.89\00:11:50.92 But God has called us to ministry outside of the box 00:11:50.95\00:11:54.13 called the church. 00:11:54.16\00:11:55.13 He has called us to go into the community. 00:11:55.14\00:11:57.46 Now many of us are scared stiff of doing that because we're 00:11:57.49\00:12:01.76 safe in the church. 00:12:01.77\00:12:02.76 We come to church, we give our offering, we give to missions, 00:12:02.79\00:12:05.11 and we think we've done our part. 00:12:05.14\00:12:06.56 But that's not what God has called us to. 00:12:06.59\00:12:09.01 He's called us to a ministry of touching peoples lives. 00:12:09.04\00:12:12.23 There are many people who will never come into a church. 00:12:12.24\00:12:17.19 Never ever will they walk one step into the church. 00:12:17.22\00:12:20.89 So what do we do for those people? 00:12:20.92\00:12:22.26 Do we just leave them and say, "Well, I'm not going to go down 00:12:22.29\00:12:25.05 to that bar because if somebody sees me walking into that bar, 00:12:25.08\00:12:28.17 or standing outside of that bar, I don't know what they 00:12:28.20\00:12:30.53 would think. 00:12:30.56\00:12:31.53 If somebody sees me in the red light district, "What would 00:12:31.54\00:12:33.36 they think if some... 00:12:33.39\00:12:34.36 But God is saying that's where we've got to go. 00:12:34.37\00:12:37.31 So if we would only allow God to take us outside of the box, 00:12:37.34\00:12:42.21 called our church, and go and minister where the needs are, 00:12:42.24\00:12:48.60 It's, I mean, it's just awesome what it's going to do. 00:12:48.63\00:12:51.68 I'm seeing it taking place in so many parts of the world 00:12:51.71\00:12:55.95 where our women are going into the communities, 00:12:55.98\00:12:58.32 and they're just doing what has to be done, and the changes 00:12:58.35\00:13:01.95 it's bringing about in the people's lives. 00:13:01.98\00:13:03.58 Amen! 00:13:03.61\00:13:04.58 Sometimes you can even volunteer. 00:13:04.59\00:13:06.77 I've talked with some Adventists who had volunteered 00:13:06.80\00:13:09.15 at the Salvation Army. 00:13:09.18\00:13:10.46 Yep. 00:13:10.49\00:13:11.46 They were making so many contacts in the community, 00:13:11.47\00:13:14.18 and going out and doing things there. 00:13:14.21\00:13:15.93 People began to know that they were Adventists, 00:13:15.96\00:13:19.35 They'd already developed up this wonderful relationship 00:13:19.38\00:13:22.69 with the people, and they were beginning to make inroads into 00:13:22.72\00:13:26.10 many denominations as well as into the community. 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.61 That's right. 00:13:29.64\00:13:30.61 We've got to stop being "those Adventists". 00:13:30.62\00:13:33.13 To me, we need to be Seventh-day Adventist Christians. 00:13:33.16\00:13:38.51 Amen. 00:13:38.54\00:13:39.86 And there's a huge difference between the Seventh-day 00:13:39.89\00:13:41.87 Adventist and the Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:13:41.90\00:13:43.87 Amen! 00:13:43.90\00:13:44.87 Because the Seventh-day Adventist is only interested 00:13:44.88\00:13:46.36 in the "do's and don'ts". 00:13:46.39\00:13:47.50 But the Seventh-day Adventist Christian has Christ first. 00:13:47.53\00:13:51.43 And if we can only be on that side, then wow! 00:13:51.46\00:13:56.07 I just can't, I'm so excited about what I know God can do 00:13:56.10\00:14:00.01 for us, and through us. 00:14:00.04\00:14:01.15 Amen, amen. 00:14:01.18\00:14:02.51 I had to, when you talked about Christian, you know, 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.96 we believe that God has his people in every church. 00:14:04.99\00:14:08.13 Oh, yes, definitely! 00:14:08.16\00:14:09.13 I was recently doing an interview at a prison, 00:14:09.14\00:14:12.55 and the chaplain there asked me, "What do Seventh-day 00:14:12.58\00:14:15.52 Adventists believe?" 00:14:15.55\00:14:16.52 I said to him, Well, we believe that the Bible is the inspired 00:14:16.53\00:14:20.80 word of God. 00:14:20.83\00:14:21.80 We believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:14:21.81\00:14:24.50 We believe that salvation is by grace alone, 00:14:24.53\00:14:27.62 yet we believe that in the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:14:27.65\00:14:31.35 and the power of the word, that He empowers us to obey. 00:14:31.38\00:14:34.82 That God works in us to will and act according to 00:14:34.85\00:14:37.22 His good pleasure. 00:14:37.25\00:14:38.22 And so I was talking along and then I said, "and we believe in 00:14:38.23\00:14:42.09 keeping all of the Ten Commandments 00:14:42.10\00:14:43.76 He looked at me and he said, "You know, there's really not 00:14:44.81\00:14:47.99
